How would you describe a city like Paris? Do you automatically think of a Robert Doisneau image of t

How would you describe a city like Paris? Do you automatically think of a Robert Doisneau image of two lover kissing in front of the Hotel de Ville or is the Eiffel Tower lit up at night inscribed in your memory? Paris is undoubtedly magical, but the beyond the confines of the tourist trails is one of the most multi-cultural, artistic and unconventional capitals in Europe.

The Paris Ile-de-France Comite Regionale du Tourisme has just launched a short viral film to promote the young and vibrant side of the city that many visitors end up missing.

The three and a half minute film entitled Kisses From Paris is directed by French actor/director Yvan Attal (who is also Charlotte Gainsbourg’s partner) and is sound tracked by Rufus Wainwright’s atmospheric Leaving For Paris. The Paris tourist board loved his sketch in New York, I Love You so much that they commissioned Yvan to express his own creative vision of the “New Paris Ile-de-France”.

The film features two young lovers, played by Zoé Schellenberg and Pierre Perrier snogging their way through Paris, stopping only to marvel at the amazing sights around them. In between declaring how much they adore each other, the couple study the art at the Beaubourg and the Palais de Tokyo, stroll along the Canal Saint-Martin, go to a gig at the Chateau de Vincenne and hunt for vintage treasures at the Saint Ouen flea market.

The film is intense, stylish and dreamy but in a more realistic than whimsical way. It reminds me of Before Sunrise and its sequel Before Sunset (shot in Paris), where Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy meet on a train and get to know each other in a day before going their separate ways, then meeting up in Paris nine years on.

Kisses From Paris does nothing to dispel the myth of Paris as a city for lovers and not all of us have a Louis Garrel look-a-like to kiss all over town, but it offers a new, alternative Paris to fall in love with.

Think of post-war Paris and chances are that this is one of the images that spring to mind. The little boy with the baguette was one of the immortal shots by Willy Ronis, who died yesterday at the age of 99.

Ronis was the last of the band of photographers, known as the humanist school, who snapped everyday Parisian life in the two decades after 1945, usually in black and white and in the poorer quarters. The period now seems like a golden age. The work of Ronis and his friends Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Brassai became poster clichés in the 1980s but they were recognised as masters earlier than most realise. As early as 1953, the Museum of Modern Art in New York honored them with an exhibition. They influenced all photographers of the era. I remember my father, a keen amateur photographer, taking slice-of-life pictures in the style of Cartier-Bresson and Ronis in the north of Scotland.

Ronis, the son of Jewish immigrants from east Europe, began as a photographer in the late 1930s using an old Rolleiflex. He was very ill in his final years but remained lucid to the end. In July he drew a big crowd when he appeared at the annual photographic exhibition in Arles.

Ronis, like his colleagues and all self-respecting thinkers in the post-war years, was a leftist. He mainly chronicled the lives of the labouring classes. He was by all accounts an extraordinarily gentle man. “I never took a mean photo,” he said when he was given a Paris show in 2005. “I never wanted to make people look ridiculous. I always had a lot of respect for the people I photographed.” In Arles, this summer, he said he had always felt empathy with his subjects. “I met very few bastards.”

President Sarkozy paid tribute to Ronis as the “chronicler of postwar social aspirations and the poet of a simple and joyous life.” Frédéric Mitterrand, the Culture Minister, said Ronis immortalized “for each of us the poetry of our daily lives and saved it from lost time.”

The work of some of the humanists has been slightly discredited in recent years with the discovery that they posed some of their seemingly spontaneous snaps of street life. Robert Doisneau admitted late in life that he used paid drama students to stage the kiss in the celebrated “Baiser de l’Hotel de Ville”. He confessed only after he was sued by a couple who falsely claimed to be the pair in his picture. I talked to Doisneau at the time and he told me that he regretted the picture because so many couples claimed over the years to have been its subject.

Ronis said he arranged only one of his shots. He came across the little boy with the baguette and asked him to run past the baker’s shop two or three times. One of his other great photos, “Les Amoureux de la Bastille” [below], was just luck he said. He was on top of the monument to take views of Paris. “I didn’t see anyone and thought I’d be left in peace. I turned round and saw two lovers …looking at the view. I loaded the camera, the young man kissed the temple of his girlfiend. They didn’t notice that I had photographed them.”

Nowadays of course that would be impossible in France. Although almost everyone carries a telephone camera it is illegal to publish the photograph of anyone without their permission. The couple would now be able to sue Ronis for a fortune.

W nocy z piątku na sobotę w wieku 99 lat zmarł Willy Ronis (na zdjęciu powyżej), legenda francuskiej fotografii.

Przez wiele dziesięcioleci za pomocą aparatu uwieczniał codzienne życie paryżan i innych francuskich miast. Wraz z Henri Cartier-Bressoema i Robertem Doisneau był reprezentantem tzw. szkoły humanistycznej w fotografii, gdyż z liryzmem i humorem zatrzymywał w kadrze sceny z codziennego życia powojennej Francji.

Francuski minister kultury Frederic Mitterrand oddał w sobotę hołd zmarłemu fotografowi, nazywając go w wydanym komunikacie “jednym z wielkich mistrzów fotografii, który podarował naszemu życiu pełne blasku zwierciadło”.

When I arrived in Glasgow I had this persistent feeling that I wanted to shoot photographs of people

When I arrived in Glasgow I had this persistent feeling that I wanted to shoot photographs of people on the street. I did not know how to go about it; it was just this amorphous sentiment that hung around in my mind, a shade, a thought of a thought. I was much too shy and lacked the requisite courage to shoot strangers.

Around this time, Totz pointed me in the direction of Street Photography for the Purist by Chris Weeks. Although Chris Weeks stipulated a lot of things that I’m not even sure I can follow at any time in my life, I felt that I understood when he exhorted one to develop the eye of a spy, a ghost. That, together with reading wikipedia and the Street and Documentary forum in photo.net helped me to imagine myself in the street, shooting.

Now I’m reading Bystander: A History of Street Photography by Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz and I am educated even more. From the Introduction:

” … For the most part, however, the photographers discussed in these pages have tried to work without being noticed by their subjects. They have taken pictures of people who are going about their business unaware of the photographer’s presence. They have made candid pictures of everyday life in the street. That, at its core, is what street photography is.”

” … The street as it is defined here might be a crowded boulevard or a country lane, a park in the city or a boardwalk at the beach, a lively cafe or a deserted hallway in a tenement, or even a subway car or the lobby of a theater. It is any public place where a photographer could take pictures of subjects who were unknown to him and, whenever possible, unconscious of his presence.”

I thought it might be a good idea to make a “brief history of street photography”; something I can come back to from time to time to remind myself of the great men and women who made me want to do even just a tiny fraction of what they did. They have scaled the lofty heights I aspire to, hopefully for as long as I am able.

On the earth that is astral and that is all

And this small second of eternity.

Frenchman and photographer Robert Doisneau cited the above passage from Jacques Prévert’s poem ‘Jardin’ as one of his favourites. He exclaims, “And this is it! This “small second of eternity” that we are lucky enough to be able to find! The understanding of this is not yet visible for all people’.

This small second of eternity is beautiful.

The Wall Street Journal has done an interesting story on the demise of Kodachrome, which, argues writer Richard B. Woodward, “has given honorable service for so long (since 1935 in movie cameras, since 1936 in 35mm still cameras) that its demise calls for a send-off more ceremonial than just a quote from the Paul Simon lyric.” Woodward interviewed Walter Iooss for the piece because of Iooss’ four-plus decades shooting for Sports Illustrated, which was launched in 1954 “to exploit the emerging potential of color photography,” writes Woodward. “The grain was sensational,” Iooss tells the Journal. “Hands down, it was the best color film of the period, until the ’80s, when Fuji caught up.”

This morning, we emailed Iooss about his Kodachrome work for Sports Illustrated, and he was kind enough to send us a few of his photos from back in the day:

Meanwhile, over at The Year in Pictures—the much-loved blog by gallerist James Danziger—there are some more lovely examples of why Kodachrome was so special. This one, taken by Robert Doisneau in Palm Springs, is one of our favorites:

In the dead heat of wedding photography season, keeping your attitude in-check can be really hard.

In the dead heat of wedding photography season, keeping your attitude in-check can be really hard. Back-to-back weddings often mean things like back-to-back 10 hour days, and, God forbid… back-to-back “Chicken Dances” at receptions. It becomes difficult to not fall into habits like shooting the same angles in the same situations (which isn’t always a bad thing, I suppose). Either way, I’m learning to pace myself and keep a creative direction.

Over the memorial day weekend, I bought a copy of Robert Doisneau’s “Paris” (thanks to a handy 40% off Borders Rewards coupon) in an effort to refuel. I paged through it next to books by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Willy Ronis, two mid-century Parisan street photographers, who were best known for their ability to capture extraordinary things happening in ordinary life. Being a romantic myself (sometimes to a hopeless fault), I’m reminded of why I fell in love with photography to begin with.

So, you’re likely to see small “tributes” to some of my heroes appearing in some of my work. I’ll try to mention them as they happen, like this homage to Willy Ronis from this past weekend…

Tristan Tzara. Man Ray

Although not as iconic as Alfred Eisenstaedt’s the sailor kiss on the V-E Day, Robert Doisneau

Although not as iconic as Alfred Eisenstaedt’s the sailor kiss on the V-E Day, Robert Doisneau’s “The Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville,” taken on a Parisian street in 1950, is considered one of the most romanticand popular photos ever taken. Although Doisneau worked in Paris as a street photographer and stole many an intimate moment of Parisian couples, this classic shot was staged. However, this fact didn’t prevent the picture from gracing the walls of many freshman dorm rooms since its first production in 1986. More than 500,000 posters and 400,000 postcards have been reprinted from the original.

The picture was taken for a photo spread about Paris lovers for Life magazine, but the image stayed in the archives of Doisneau’s photo agency (Ralpho, which benefited greatly from this single picture) for more than 30 years before it was commercialized by a poster company.

The picture’s success sparked controversies when several couples claimed that they were the subjects and sued Doisneau. In 1993, a former actress, Françoise Bornet sued Doisneau for $18,000 and a share of the royalty in the image, by claiming she was the women in the picture. The case was dismissed, but Doisneau admitted that he, Bornet and her boyfriend Jacques Carteaud staged the photo. The couple who would later separate were the students studying theater when Doisneau approached them. Doisneau reflected, “I would have never dared to photograph people like that. Lovers kissing in the street, those couples are rarely legitimate.”

These are little tidbits I nibble on that I slowly collect in my pocket. Disjointed images that you wouldn’t think twice about multiplied 14 times more impactful into 14 separate images, yet 14 of the same. I don’t get it. Sometimes I don’t make much sense.
