Lynch Theater at John Jay College, 524 West 59th Street (between 10th & 11th Avenues) in New York. Performances are Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 4pm and 8pm, and Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 4pm. Tickets start at $40 and can be purchased online at www.thedmiexperience.com
Meditating profoundly on the birth of Christ, the joyous drama moves audiences with a wholly original portrayal of the central event of Christian history. Produced by New Rochelle-based Dance Ministry Institute (DMI) and featuring original choreography by DMI founding director Robert Evans, NATIVITY gives reason for faith audiences to rejoice by serving as a dazzling tribute to the miracle of the incarnation, the universal power of faith, and the explosive talent of an inspired local dance ministry.
A native of St. Louis, his dance ministry roots began with the Harlem Tabernacle Dance Ministry (Harlem, NY) where he served as the assistant director from 1991-2001. Says his wife Selena, who also serves as costume designer and dancer in NATIVITY, “Robert is a true leader who considers himself privileged to serve the body of Christ with all that the Lord has given him.”

The people of Surrey have spoken and the results are in. The votes were counted at 11 different boroughs and districts throughout Surrey and coordinated centrally. The Police Area Returning Officer, the Local Returning Officers and all the staff involved in the count did an exceptional job and the whole Robert Evans Campaign Team send them our thanks.

In Surrey as a whole the first preference result was:

Iles (Con) 34391 – 26.1%
Hurley (Ind) 34378 – 26.1%
Williams (Ind) 26292 – 20.0%
Evans (Lab) 17384 – 13.2%
Shatwell (UKIP) 10684 – 8.1%
O’Shea (LD) 8503 – 6.5%

The turnout was 15.4%

After the second preferences were added for the top two candidates:
Hurley (Ind) 52793 – 53.9%
Iles (Con) 45068 – 46.1%

So, amazingly, Kevin Hurley, the self-styled “zero tolerance” candidate was elected as Surrey’s first Police and Crime Commissioner. Commissioner-elect Hurley has our congratulations and we all wish him the best of luck for his term in office.

Surrey should have been the safest Tory police area in England and Wales but somehow they managed to lose it. It is a shocking result for the Conservative Party in Surrey and they have only themselves to blame for not taking the election seriously enough because they thought they would win without trying. They took your vote for granted.

However, the shock of the Conservatives’ defeat should not distract us from our excellent result. Winning for Labour here was always going to be a long-shot. The high number of protest votes for so-called independent candidates was a factor in this election across all police areas but Labour is very firmly the second most popular political party in Surrey. I think this is the first time we could say this since 1974.

The Liberal Democrats only fielded candidates in 24 of the 41 police areas in England and Wales. In Surrey, they barely campaigned due to lack of activists. Nick O’Shea kept his deposit by a whisker and finished below even UKIP. The PCC poll has shown beyond all doubt that Labour is now the challenger to the Conservatives in Surrey.

The next election, barring by-elections or an unexpected general election, in Surrey will be on 2 May 2013 when all of Surrey County Council will be up for election. The Tory council has cut libraries, botched road maintenance, neglected the most vulnerable and failed the people of Surrey. As the new official second placed party, Labour will be an effective opposition. A vote for the Lib Dems will be a wasted vote, if they even manage to field a candidate in your area of Surrey next May.

Labour has had a fantastic campaign team in Surrey for the PCC election. As we sign off here our sincere thanks go to everyone who leafleted, canvassed, campaigned in many ways and especially to all the voters who put their X beside Robert Evans on the ballot paper. We appreciate what you did and we won’t let you down as the main opposition party in Surrey.

See you all again next spring.

What they have today —please, is very watered down. Non-human. It’s all digital. It’s one big machine. It’s not people.

—Robert Evans, Producer

Recently, I watched the new 007 film Skyfall (2012). It’s a well-crafted homage to Bond of old. 007 has his Walther PPK and a radio transmitter. We even see the Aston Martin DB5 and 007 jokes about ejecting M from the passenger seat. The stunts are terrific, the villain is nefarious, the girls are beautiful and Bond saves the day. But here is one of my few quibbles: Did we really need the digital Komodo dragons? Back in the day we would’ve got stock footage, a few closeups and an animatronic Varanus head chomping down on the bad guy’s calf. In 2012 we get CGI. I know, it is faster, more efficient and economical (and safer) compared to shooting live monitor lizards. It also looks fake. However, I’ll give credit to the Skyfall team. This film was basically old school and it’s perhaps my favorite of the Daniel Craig Bond outings, even with computer-rendered lizards.

In the new Criterion release of Rosemary’s Baby (1968) there is a supplemental documentary Remembering Rosemary’s Baby, where Mia Farrow, Roman Polanski and producer Robert Evans reflect separately on the film and the film’s influence. I agree with producer Robert Evans. Films today are one big machine. They are processed. Sean Connery commented that his last film, the awful The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003) was a cartoon —or something to that effect. I’m glad Ben Affleck elected to shoot Argo (2012) on Kodak (REAL FILM) Anamorphic 35 and 2-Perf Super 35 (Sergio Leone’s choice). He also made a film about people.

Criterion’s Blue-ray print of Rosemary’s Baby reminds me just how influential this film was. It created a sub-genre of possession films, beginning with The Exorcist (1973), The Omen (1976), that culminate in entertaining but crappy found-footage films such as the Paranormal Activity (I through IV) series. Polanski focused the film on people, but emphasized the spaces and alienation around Mia Farrow’s Rosemary. That creepy old apartment complex is a central character. It’s a monster with winding staircases, windows everywhere, places to see outward, yet the film is so claustrophobic. Polanski was at his creative pinnacle in this film.

Reflecting on the movie, Polanski notes that he had no intention in showing the baby. There is a single reference to the new-born’s eyes. I swear I can see the visage of a child with glowing red vertical pupils, but it is all suggested. Can you imagine adding a CGI devil baby to Rosemary’s Baby? I don’t know. Maybe I fail to understand the modern film audience.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to.

Robert Evans was the Filmer, Editor, and Actor in this gorgeous look at the retired Uncle Samwala from State Bicycle Co. We got an email from Rob yesterday asking us to check out the video and give our thoughts. I sat down with some of the fixiefamous staff and we gave it a watch. We all fell in love with this film. The artsy angles that Rob was able to pull off are incredible. Especially considering that there was no way for him to see how the shot looked until after he finished filming each shot. Two of our staff members weren’t even aware that Rob shot this himself until after the film and their minds were blown. It’s amazing what we can accomplish all by ourselves. The only comment that was not of praise was Samantha’s. She asked me, ” Do you think people are going to hate on this because he filmed this himself?” I almost lost my shit after hearing this. At first I didn’t know exactly why, but as I sat down that night and thought about it more, it finally made sense …. people are idiots plain and simple. Not all people… you’re cool. Just the majority of people are not. Case and point, the ever so popular line “haters gonna hate.” That is by far the dumbest sentence anyone can ever type or state. Haters Gonna Hate? Are you a fucking retard? EVERYONE HATES SOMETHING, IT’S CALLED AN OPINION!!!!! When did we become a society of little pussies? Remember that saying, “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me”? Today it’s more like, “sticks and stones will break my bones, and fuck all the haters who throw them cause they don’t know what I’ve been through. They don’t know me! You’re just hating cause you jealous.” These people who state, “haters gonna hate” have no idea that they sound just like the fucking idiots that used to grace the stage of the Jerry Springer Show. In theory, everyone is a hater because everyone has different tastes. We are all different people with different upbringings, therefore, it is only logical that we are for and against different ideas. The stupid part is, we have embraced the idea of so called “haters” yet we still hate on things ourselves. It’s simple. If my wife asks me if I want to go out for Indian food, I say no because I DON’T LIKE INDIAN FOOD. Some people like Indian food. Personally I am not a fan, therefore I am hating on Indian food by saying that I don’t like it? Yes. Some people in this country are anti-abortion, does that mean they are “Hating” on Women’s rights to make their own choices regarding their own bodies? YES. When Abraham Lincoln decided to go to war with the South to free the slaves was he “Hating” on the South’s rights to own slaves? YES. Were the people from the south “Hating” on African American’s rights to live a free life? YES. Do Republican’s “hate on Democrats and vice-versa? YES!!!!! Do Christian’s “Hate” on Muslims? YES!!!! Do Both “Hate on Jews? YES! WE ARE ALL HATER’S! Therefore stating a rhetorical statement like, “Haters gonna hate” is about as dumb as saying: “Rain is gonna rain,” “Wind is gonna blow,” “When it’s hot you’re gonna sweat.” Everyone already knows this shit. They knew this shit when they were 5 years old, so it makes you an idiot. Paying someone retail cost for an item with that statement on it makes you a retard. Posting on Twitter, “Haters gonna hate” is like posting “2+2 = 4.” This is not some pebble of knowledge that you picked up as you traveled on foot through Tibet. The idea of “Hating” is based on jealousy. Either you have something or you do something that makes others jealous. Therefore they “Hate” on you. The issues that may arise however, is how do you determine whether or not someone dislikes what you are doing based on opinion rather than jealousy? There lyes the problem. We have used this “hating” as a crutch for poor self esteem. We as a society have forced ourselves in to believing that instead of someone having a different opinion other than ourselves, they must instead be jealous. Everyone has a different opinion. The question is whether there is a quantifiable way to figure out whether someone is “hating” or just having a different opinion. As all men and women are given the freedom to speak their minds, it seems of low intelligence that we quickly chalk their opinions into nothing more than mere jealousy. Even some of the greatest minds through out history “hated” on something.

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
― Mahatma Gandhi ….”hating” on Christians.

Matthew 19:23-24 “New International Version (NIV)”

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
- Jesus …”hating” on rich people

“Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.”
- Albert Einstein ….”hating” on people who read too much.

“The pioneers of a warless world are the youth who refuse military service.”
- Albert Einstein …”hating” on the Military.

“I don’t like people who have never fallen or stumbled. Their virtue is lifeless and it isn’t of much value. Life hasn’t revealed its beauty to them.”
- Boris Pasternak …”hating” on people who make few mistakes.

“Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.”
- Buddha ….”hating” on Atheists.

“A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.”
- Theodore Roosevelt …”hating” on Non-Believers.

“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”
- George Washington …”hating” on the separation of Church and State.

“In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one class of citizens to give to another.”
- Voltaire ….”hating” on Government.

“All murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.”
- Voltaire ….”hating” on the Military.

“After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands.”
- Friedrich Nietzsche….”hating” on religious people.

The real question is, can we find a line between jealousy and opinion? I do not believe that the possibility in determining whether one is jealous or merely put off as they are indifferent from the opinions and beliefs of others is easily determined. Since there is no quantifiable way in knowing whether someone is “Hating” or merely stating their opinion, there is never any concrete evidence that allows for calling someone a “hater.” Leading to the only conclusion that just by calling someone a “hater” you are in-turn “hating” on their oppinions. So everyone is a hater. Stating or typing “Haters gonna hate” is as wise as saying “humans gonna speak.”

The Best Choice for Surrey on 15 November By Robert Evans With the Police and Crime Commissioner ele

The Best Choice for Surrey on 15 November
By Robert Evans

With the Police and Crime Commissioner elections now just a few days away, I am spending more and more time out and about in Surrey. In recent weeks I have visited all the larger towns eg Woking, Staines and Redhill and many smaller villages from Elstead and Cranleigh to Ewell and Stanwell. I have met former pupils from my teaching days, cricket opponents, people I haven’t seen for many years and even one person who knew me and my late parents in Ashford where I was born!

People in Surrey do think these elections are important and nearly everyone shares the two key points from my agenda – no to privatisation and police station closures – the issues that distinguish me from my opponents.

Nearly everyone opposes the Coalition plans to privatise parts of our police force. We all saw what happened when G4S were hired to run security at the Olympics yet Theresa May, the Home Secretary, still says private companies can be contracted to run policing services.

Boris Johnson has gone further saying ‘patrolling by community support officers, developing cases, responding to incidents, victim and witness support, managing high-risk individuals or intelligence and engagement with the public, as well as managing forensics and the vehicle fleet, finance and human resources could all be up for grabs.’

To my mind, there is absolutely no proven benefit to the privatisation of policing. What there is, is a huge list of problems. What happens if the police become more accountable to shareholders and not the community? What happens if what the community wants is not seen as commercially attractive enough? What happens if the private company providing polices services goes bankrupt as we saw with the debacle of Southern Cross and our care homes ? The reality is, when a private company failed or got into difficulty the police (or military) would have to take over. And there are many more questions to be answered.

Privatisation would change Surrey policing for good. It’s no wonder Surrey’s Police force oppose these ideas and that their morale is very low as a consequence of this and changes to their conditions of service. A country with a demoralised police force is a dangerous place to be and I don’t want that for Surrey – my home county.

I’m afraid the other candidates don’t share my views. One was the Chairman of the Police Authority that piloted the privatisation scheme in Surrey and clearly doesn’t understand or won’t accept that ‘outsourcing or putting services out to tender’ is privatisation! His much trumpeted claim that there are 200 more beat officers rings a bit hollow as Surrey still has fewer officers than other counties of similar size – eg Hertfordshire.

Two other party candidates are supporters of the Coalition Government, – Conservative and LibDem. Whilst the latter claims he opposes much of the Government’s policy, as we have seen in just about every other area, the LibDems go along with David Cameron, ‘sacrificing their principles in exchange for twenty ministerial cars’.

Two of my fellow candidates in Surrey are former police officers. Far from being a good qualification for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, I believe it actually to be almost incompatible. We do not want to have a PCC in conflict with the Chief Constable. The Chief is in charge of all operational matters and it really concerns me that someone who has been either a PC or a Borough Commander elsewhere might quickly be in a confrontation situation with Surrey Police.

In addition I am the only candidate who has said that I will re-instate the budget of the Domestic Abuse Service. I have been saddened to learn of the high rate of abuse in Surrey – a crime which affects rich and poor alike but which the current Police Authority hasn’t made a priority. I’m also a keen supporter of animal welfare and will stamp down on all crimes against wildlife, from hunting to dangerous dogs.

I don’t claim to be perfect. There is much for me to learn about the role of Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey. But if you elect me on November 15th you’ll get someone who is totally committed. I have very sound experience of negotiating, I get on well with people and I’ll make sure it isn’t just the loudest voices that get heard in this county.

Often cited as one of the films that started the “Paramount Renaissance” in the 1970s, Love Story was nothing short of a phenomenon when it was released. Erich Segal, who wrote the screenplay, was asked by Paramount to write a novelization of the film in to create pre-publicity; it became a best seller. I have a sort of love/hate relationship with this film. Mostly this is because I think it is really poorly written. I hate the characters. I don’t think they are really developed at all. But, I love the art direction and the cinematography and most of the performances. As I was watching it, I felt like it was this perfectly crafted film wasted on a mediocre screenplay and that just feels like a shame to me. Love Story was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning one: Best Original Score (won), Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor John Marley, Best Actor Ryan O’Neal, Best Actress in a Leading Role Ali MacGraw, Best Director and Best Picture. The other films nominated for Best Picture that year were: Airport, Five Easy Pieces, MASH and winner Patton.

Arthur Hiller started out directing television in the 1950s before breaking into films in the late 1960s. I’ve only seen a handful of his films, but he definitely made an indelible mark in “New Hollywood,” helming such films as: The Out of Towners, Plaza Suite, The Hospital, Man of La Mancha, and The In-Laws. He also is the man behind such ridiculous films as Nightwing and Author, Author! As for Paramount, under the head of Bob Evans the studio produced some of the greatest films of the era including: Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Rosemary’s Baby, The Italian Job, True Grit, Harold and Maude, The Godfather, Serpico, Save the Tiger, and The Conversation. Evans then stepped down as head of the studio and began producing films on his own, such as: Chinatown, Marathon Man, Black Sunday, Popeye and Urban Cowboy.

I am a huge fan of Ryan O’Neal. HUGE. I love his big dumb face. When I think about all the great films he made and his performances in them – What’s Up, Doc?, Barry Lyndon, Paper Moon, Nickelodeon etc. – it upsets me even more that his one and only Oscar nomination was for this film. While it’s not his worst performance, it’s definitely not his best. I do stand by contention that O’Neal was one of the best working actors in the 1970s. I think maybe he was just a little too pretty to be taken seriously and that is a shame. Although, I do like ogling his face.

Ali MacGraw burst into Hollywood with her Golden Globe winning performance in 1969′s Goodbye Columbus. That same year she married Bob Evans; their marriage lasted for three years. After her Oscar nominated turn in Love Story, MacGraw starred opposite Steve McQueen in 1972′s The Getaway (a film that I found to be painfully boring); she then married McQueen. Their marriage lasted five years. MacGraw didn’t star in a movie again until 1978. Since then she’s only been in a handful of projects. My reason for laying that all out is that, despite barely being in any films, her performance in this film is so iconic she’s still relatively well known to this day. I find this odd because I kind of hate her in both this film and The Getaway (the only of her films I’ve seen). Then you’ve got another actress from the era, Marsha Mason (a favorite of mine), who was nominated for four Academy Awards (including for 1977′s The Goodbye Girl) and who is still working today. But I bet you if you gave people those two names, more people would recognize MacGraw than they would Mason. That just doesn’t seem right to me. But I digress. I understand that her character was supposed to represent this new era of women and women’s lib and all that, but when she’s almost always presented in such a shrewish, unlikeable way that it seems more like an insult to the women of that era, rather than a compliment.

I don’t really think they had much chemistry in the film, to be quite honest. I feel like O’Neal really tried, though. Part of why I have a love/hate relationship with this film is that I always feel like Oliver, despite being privileged as fuck, really does deserve something better than cold fish Jenny.

But I would be remiss if I didn’t include a discussion of this famous scene. It’s so bad. It’s SO BAD. And yet, it is so iconic. It made its way to the #13 spot on AFI’s 100 Years. . .100 Movie Quotes.

I did, however lend itself to the above ending of What’s Up, Doc? and I think that evens the scales completely. Actually, I saw What’s Up, Doc? at the Red Vic Movie House (RIP) last summer and I knew that this line was from Love Story (which I hadn’t seen at that point), so the next day I got Love Story and watched it. Yep.

I’ve been watching horror movies all this month and two of them this last week starred Ray Milland. Actually, they were both from 1972 as well: The Thing With Two Heads and Frogs. It’s sort of bizarre to see an Oscar-winning actor (for 1945′s The Lost Weekend). It’s fascinating to see the kind of roles acclaimed actors get stuck with as they age. I like him in this film. Even though you hate the character, he’s one of the few characters whose actions actually fit with the character as presented to the viewer. I also recommend Milland (along with several other aging Old Hollywood leading men) in Elia Kazan’s final film The Last Tycoon. There is a 1978 sequel to Love Story called Oliver’s Story that has both Milland and O’Neal reprising their roles. I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know if it’s any good. Oh, I also want y’all to notice Jenny’s red dress. They have her dressed in red throughout the film. I get that red is the color of Harvard and all of that. But I also feel like it’s another way in which Hiller was trying to paint Jenny as an independent woman, but instead makes her out to be some sort of harlot. If anyone knows if Hiller has ever talked about all the red in this movie, please, direct me to it.

I do, however, really love John Marley as Jenny’s father. Marley is probably best remembered as Jack Woltz, the studio head in The Godfather who winds up with a horses head in his bed. Although his character in Love Story is just as hackneyed and clichéd as all the others, like O’Neal and Milland, his talent as an actors allows him to bring a layered performance to a character without any layers.

I gotta mention Tommy Lee Jones, making his amazingly coiffed big screen debut.

Look at this beautiful shot. There are so many examples of great cinematography and excellent framing in this film that it just makes me angry when I think about how bad the damn screenplay is. Also, it is an Oscar nominated screenplay. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Argh.

Here’s some sad-sack Oliver to end things right.

What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful and brilliant? That she loved Mozart and Bach? The Beatles? And me?

As all of you guys probably know by now, Slash got a star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame just this summer. The ceremony was a bit different from the other ceremonies I’ve been to, one, because there were so many people and majority were wearing black (rock on baby!), and two, because there was a free concert inside the Hard Rock Cafe after the induction (rock on again, baby!).

Being a self confessed Guns N’ Roses addict, this was not just another event to me. This was THE event! Gn’R has played a major part in my life. I looked up to these guys ever since I was a very young boy and I even did a report on my English class about them in college. The Sweet Child O’ Mine intro was one of the very first riffs I tried to play on the guitar (I play it, you hum the bass line!). I have their 1992 Tokyo concert on DVD that I kept watching (have you noticed they kept running and running and didn’t get tired?! Are they athletes or something?!). I tried to emulate Axl Rose‘s moves when we did our gigs (awful, just awful!). I also have all their songs on my iPod and I never get tired listening to them again and again, especially because Gn’R is my workout music. Welcome to The Jungle is ALWAYS the first thing to play as soon as my feet step on the treadmill. I don’t think there’s anybody in this world who would not get pumped up to that song! Then it goes to It’s So Easy to Night Rain to Outta Get Me to Mr. Brownstone andcso on and ooh yeah I feel it baby I feel it!!! So if there’s anything I could thank them for personally, it will be for providing me my workout enthusiasm!

If you have followed the Gn’R drama then you’re aware about the feud among Axl and Slash and the rest of the band. It’s a long story but to make it simple, wherever there’s a Slash there’s no Axl, and wherever there’s an Axl there’s no Slash. This was a Slash event, so you knew who’s not coming. Somebody with an even bigger ego than Axl was present though, none other than the one with the Adonis DNA, Mr. Tiger Blood himself, Charlie Sheen!

Here’s his hilarious speech:

“You know it’s quite fitting, I think, that Slash is getting a star on the very street that Axl Rose will one day be sleeping on.” -Charlie Sheen

That’s epic. Charlie Sheen rocks!

Slash’s speech was a little more on the emotional side, I think he was trying very hard to keep his tears from flowing the whole time.

Here’s a clip from EyeBiteTV:

Other guest speakers were producer Robert Evans and DJ Jim Ladd. It was amazing to see my idol on that podium. It was also an amazing moment to see Guns N’ Roses, well, at least part of it, together for the first time in person.

The star ceremony might have ended there but the event was in no way finished! Live acoustic concert coming up!

I did not bring my DSLR camera for this event, all photos above were taken by my point and shoot cam. It turned out to be a smart idea because if I have brought it then I wouldn’t have been allowed inside!

Slash performed an acoustic set with the man he’s currently collaborating with, Myles Kennedy. He’s the former vocalist of Alter Bridge (they used to be called, uhm, what’s that again, “Creed“, then he replaced Scott Stapp, remember?). He’s also more known to the wrestling world as the guy who sang Edge’s theme song.

They performed new songs like “Back to Cali” and old hits such as “Fall To Pieces” (from Slash’s Velvet Revolver days) and the eternal “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Steven Adler even made a special appearance in the middle of a performance asking the crowd to clap altogether to the beat, and the hell we did!

This was yet another day I’ll never forget. To Axl Rose, I don’t know if and when you’ll have a star of your own, but I will see you too someday. And I will fanboy like crazy. Coz I’m f**king crazy. Crazy! Congratulations to Slash for receiving the 2,473rd Walk of Fame Star!
