Damaging to the Desert? If not the desert, then where?

Offshore Eyesore? Looks Pretty Cool to Me

There has been a lot of effort to change the way America gets it’s energy.  At first, there was a push for ethynol but the costs to produce the corn proved to be greater than the energy it produced.  So, greater attention was given to other renewable sources such as wind and solar.   A few years ago, a proposal came about to erect a windfarm off of the Massachusetts coast.  But there is opposition from prominent residents who, among other things, complain the offshore farm would spoil the view.  One of the strongest opponents is none other than Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. who says he’s an environmentalist but wrote in an op-ed that his opposition has many facets, including that the project is only feasible due to government subsidies.  I wonder if that means that he’s opposed to all projects that are feasible due to government subsidy?

Now, a United States Senator is throwing up a blockade against a huge solar power farm in the desert.  Senator, Diane Feinstein of California has introduced legislation that would create a 1.7 million acre national park in the desert.  That would prohibit plans to construct several solar projects including the worlds largest solar farm.   The growth in the renewable sector in California was spurred by targets of the Golden State to derive one-third of its electricity from renewable sources.   So, we have a US Senator from California making it more difficult for her own state to meet its own objectives.  But, this is not the first time something like this has come up.  In mid 2008, the Federal Government stood in the way of a similar solar farm in Arizona to protect the desert.

President Obama has made quite a few public pronouncements that his energy policy is centered on developing alternative energy.   But, the San Francisco Chronicle says that there has been “more talk than progress” concerning the nation’s energy policy.  Here’s the deal…either we want alternative energy or not.  I do not believe that there is a way to create energy without some required sacrifice.  Everything has a consequence.  It seems like that this issue is like so many others.  Every election, people seem to say “thorw the bums out” then go and vote for their representative…their guy is okay but the rest..well throw’em out.  People in many states want to have use of their automobiles but when it comes to drilling for oil offshore…not of their beaches.  Solar power? Great idea..but not in my desert.   Winds blow consistently in many area and if we can harness it, it would be a good clean source of energy…as long as its not in my back yard or off my coast.  The duplicity is amazing and maddening.

The Old Man wouldn't have Blogged on Christmas Week Either

Weather Bottom Line:  I haven’t been reporting much on the weather…or anything else much.  See, Snow White and I took a little break for Christmas and I didn’t feel like blogging.  Last year, we went out of town for Christmas (first visit home for Christmas in a dozen years…an upside to unemployment) but I took along the computer and proceeded to post every day.  Not a good thing to do and so I thought that blogging over Christmas was not good no matter if you were at home or not.  Anyway, I’ve been seeing rain the forecast and also temperatures in the upper 30’s or low 40’s showing up in the various forecasts and I couldn’t figure out why. 

If you noticed on Tuesday night, we had a  huge ring around the moon.  There is a folk saying of “if the ring is near, the rain if far and if the ring is far, the rain is near.”  It is generally true.  See, the cloud deck following the passage of a cold front is such that the refraction from moonlight will create a small ring.  Since the passage of a cold front typically is an end of the rain, then it works. Conversely, the high cirrus clouds associated with the approach of a warm front prior to a storm system result in a large ring.  Almost every single time I’ve noticed a big ring, rain has followed within 24 hours.   This should hold true this time.  We had our warm front, we are in the mid 40’s on Wednesday.  Then we have a cold front.  While I had thought we had a reasonable chance for a little snow with wrap around cold and moisture, the GFS only advertises a dusting on New Year’s Day and the NAM has nothing.  So, there may be some insignificant snow on Thursday but the real story will be the cold.  We will not be above freezing at any hour of any day for the foreseeable future…I think that will hold for at least the first 7 days of 2010.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, who chairs the Senate subcommittee that oversees the Interior Department, has killed plans to build 13 multi-million dollar solar plants and wind farms on a million acres in California’s Mojave Desert.

Feinstein’s move will severely complicate California’s impracticable effort to obtain a third of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

The desert land was bought for nearly $45 million in private funds and $18 million in federal funds by an environmental group, which then donated it to the federal government for the purpose of conservation. (You have to give them credit here. Instead of demanding that taxpayers buy the land, these Greenies raised the money privately and purchased the land. That is honorable.)

In 2005, President Bush (the anti-green President) ordered that renewal energy production be fast-tracked on all public lands including the Mojave, which is among the sunniest in the nation.

“This is arguably the best solar land in the world, and Senator Feinstein shouldn’t be allowed to take this land off the table without a proper and scientific environmental review,” said Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Union officials who were joyfully contemplating the creation of thousands of “green” construction jobs aren’t too happy with Feinstein, either.

I love that there’s a real, tangible movement these days to open hearts and exchange some of the materialism of the Christmas season for a greater sense of charity. Of course there is an annual lament for the way the holiday gets branded into oblivion and how red and green department store decorations show up before Halloween candy is even stocked, but there’s a nice, attention grabbing celebrity movement encouraging us to give charitably this year.

Redefine Christmas (also connected to Just Give and Changing the Present: The Thought That Counts) not only brings us video and audio messages from stars encouraging us to ask family and friends to replace at least one gift they might normally purchase for us with, instead, a donation to a charity…there are also user-friendly ways to do just that from the website(s). Send an electronic message/card suggesting the idea to your loved ones, look for your favorite charity or cause or peruse the databanks to find a new passion, and easily spread the word via social networking. Encouragement comes from the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Martha Stewart, Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Jessica Biel, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Harry Connick Jr., and more.

You may be wrapping up (literally) the last of your shopping, however…one less gift under your own tree may not make much of a difference in your living room, but can completely shift the world for another.

USA Today’s cover story yesterday was on ” Which of these could fuel a jet?”, the article included algae & Valcent. In the cover story article by Sam Ward (Jan. 27, 2009), he discussed three options to fueling a jet, while cutting costs and carbon footprints. He presents three options: Option A is Chickens, B is Algae and C is Jatropha. The article takes the position that algae, long term could be the alternative fuel source that fuels airline engines. The article outlines how Valcent turns algae into biodiesel by vertically growing the algae in bioreactors in greenhouses. The article also provided a picture chart that reflects that algae produces more oil yield per acre in gallons at 100,000 than palm oil (635), soybean (50) and corn (3).

En España ha comenzado la vacunación contra la “pandemia” de gripe A. Como han advertido muchos profesionales sanitarios durante los últimos meses el remedio puede ser peor que la enfermedad. Esta vacuna se ha vendido expandiendo el miedo entre la población para se inocule una vacuna que sin el marketing del miedo no se pondría, al menos en la medida que interesa a los laboratorios fabricantes de la misma. La gripe A es una enfermedad leve, más que una gripe estacional y las vacunas siempre pueden producir reacciones adversas de diferente gravedad. Han de saber que la Comisión Europea ha autorizado para toda Europa dos vacunas: Focetria, del laboratorio Novartis y Pandemrix, de GlaxoSmithKline. Ambas llevan como conservante mercurio, el polémico timerosal. Este excipiente puede producir autismo (trastorno generalizado del desarrollo que se caracteriza por una alteración de la interacción social y de la comunicación, así como por patrones de comportamiento repetitivos y estereotipados) en los niños, entre otros daños neurológicos.

La Audiencia Nacional española ha admitido a trámite una reclamación de responsabilidad patrimonial al Ministerio de Sanidad y los laboratorios GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi Pasteur MSD, Wyeth, Lederle y Berna Biotech España, fabricantes de vacunas con timerosal por los posibles daños que haya causado. La demanda está  impulsada por la Asociación Vencer el Autismo (AVA) y la Asociación para Protección Ambiental a través del Ecoturismo y en la Defensa de la Salud (ANDECO), en nombre de 59 familias (hay otras 35 por formalizar) y gestionada por el abogado Felipe Holgado, un especialista en derecho sanitario. Es la primera vez que se presenta en España una demanda colectiva que cuestiona los efectos de las vacunas en nuestro organismo, al menos de las que contienen mercurio (la denuncia también incluye los daños que pueden provocar las amalgamas dentales fabricadas con dicho metal). En la Audiencia Nacional el asunto está en trámites previos, los de demanda y contestación. El Ministerio de Sanidad ha respondido al requerimiento de dicho juzgado que no está demostrada científicamente la relación del mercurio de la vacunas con el autismo. Lo ha hecho con consideraciones genéricas, sin adjuntar estudios individualizados de cada niño con autismo. Ahora le toca el turno a los cinco laboratorios demandados.

“Se ha comprobado que tras la vacunación o la colocación de amalgamas dentales que llevan mercurio, aumentan los niveles de este metal en el cuerpo de los pacientes. Existen estudios que han demostrado que, tras una vacunación con timerosal, se detectan en el organismo del receptor niveles de mercurio superiores a los recomendados por la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de Estados Unidos (EPA) y la Organización Mundial de la salud (OMS)”, afirma Felipe Holgado, el abogado responsable de la demanda. “Un informe de evaluación terapéutica sobre las vacunas con timerosal publicado por el antiguo Insalud en el año 2000 argumenta su peligrosidad –continúa-. Además, se sugiere que los laboratorios fabriquen vacunas sin esta sustancia”. Eso sí, dicha publicación destaca que en ningún momento se corte el límpido chorro de la vacunación de niños pues sus beneficios “son muy superiores a los riesgos potenciales derivados de la exposición a vacunas que contienen timerosal”. Existen más de 10.000 estudios relacionados con la toxicidad del mercurio.

Los laboratorios conocen los daños en la salud del mercurio de las vacunas. En 2005, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, abogado de prestigio en temas de salud y ecología y sobrino del presidente de Estados Unidos John F. Kennedy, publicó su informeDeadly Immunity (Inmunidad mortal). Entre otras muchas informaciones, el trabajo ofrece datos sobre una reunión desarrollada en Simpsonwood (Georgia, EE.UU.), en junio de 2000. La reunión fue convocada por el Centro para el Control de las Enfermedades (CDC), sin comunicados públicos, tan sólo las invitaciones privadas a 52 asistentes. Entre ellos: funcionarios de alto nivel del CDC y de la FDA (la agencia de medicamentos estadounidense), el especialista en vacunas más destacado de la Organización Mundial de la Salud y ejecutivos de los principales fabricantes de vacunas, como Merck, Aventis, GlaxoSmithKline y Wyeth (tres de estos laboratorios están demandados en España ante la Audiencia Nacional).
¿Cuál era el objetivo de tan inquietante cita? Una investigación había suscitado dudas sobre la seguridad de una gran cantidad de vacunas administradas a bebés y niños pequeños. El epidemiólogo del CDC Thomas Verstraeten había analizado una enorme base de datos con los historiales médicos de 100.000 niños y había descubierto que un conservante con mercurio incorporado a las vacunas -el timerosal- parecía ser elresponsable de un aumento espectacular de los casos de trastornos por déficit de atención, hiperactividad y autismo en niños. En ese momento en EE.UU. había 4.200 demandas de padres de niños autistas.

Tras analizar numerosas estadísticas que confirmaban dichos datos aquellos funcionarios y representantes de los laboratorios, en lugar de tomar medidas para alertar al público y eliminar el suministro de timerosal de las vacunas, dedicaron buena parte del tiempo a discutir sobre cómo ocultar una información tan importante para la ciudadanía y en los años siguientes así lo hicieron.

Hollender attended a conference by Business for Social Responsibility and blatantly asked the question, “Will this conference make business more responsible?“

It’s a good question to ask since BSR is, according to Hollender, the largest and most well-known organization promoting socially responsible business practices. Hollender’s answer in so many words: “No.”

I sense the same ineffectiveness with conferences such as GreenTown. My college, Columbia College Chicago, hosted it recently, and I covered Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s speech there, as well as a panel on waste diversion. But did it actually do anything to help the planet? Will the city officials who attended actually take anything away from it? Yet to be known. (If it’s hard to find the tangible results of something as big as this, hasn’t it failed anyway?)

How about the one-year get-together of players in the Chicago Climate Action Plan—was this any more than a back rub for those involved? I doubt it.

So thanks, Mr. Hollender, for saying what needs to be said. I hope I can always be that way myself.

Le fait d’être un pédiâtre mondialement reconnu et un des plus grands experts dans les domaines des maladies infectueuses, de l’immunologie et de la virologie, n’empêche pas le docteur Paul Offit d’être un des médecins les plus détestés en Amérique.  Son crime?  Il est un des rares défenseurs des programmes de vaccination et il tente de réfuter la thèse qui laisse croire que l’autisme est causé par certains vaccins.

Le docteur Offit est devenu la cible principale d’un “mouvement-citoyen” (grassroots movement) qui s’oppose systématiquement à la vaccination des enfants et des lois qui l’exigent.  L’actrice Jenny McCarthy (mère d’un enfant autiste), qui a connu ses heures de gloire après avoir posé nue dans Playboy, son époux, l’acteur Jim Carrey et le politicien Robert F. Kennedy Jr sont les têtes d’affiche de ce mouvement, fortement appuyés par une armée d’organisateurs et de sympatisans.

Mentionnons ici que dans certaines régions des États-Unis, de plus en plus de parents refusent certains vaccins, résultant en une réapparition de certaines maladies infantiles au niveau de ce qu’il était avant le début des programmes de vaccination.  En mai dernier, le réputé New England Journal of Medicine traçait un lien direct entre la réapparition de certaines maladies suite à l’impopularité de certains programmes de vaccination.  Kaiser Permanente, un organisme sans but lucratif spécialisé dans la prestation de soins médicaux, rapportait également que les enfants qui ne reçoivent pas les vaccins appropriés courent un risque 23 fois plus élevé de contracter la coqueluche, un virus extrêmement contagieux qui provoque une toux violente et qui peut entraîner la mort chez les nourissons.  Une autre étude démontre que les cas de coqueluche reportés ont grimpé de 1,000 en 1976 à 26,000 en 2004.  Une maladie infectueuse qu’une campagne de vaccination a pratiquement fait disparaître refait surface.

“Autrefois, je disais que le vent tournerait lorsque les enfants commenceraient à mourir.  Malheureusement, les enfants ont commencé à mourir” confie le docteur Offit, impuissant devant le décompte des enfants non-vaccinés qui n’ont pas survécu à la méningite en Pennsylvanie et au Minnesota.  “Alors maintenant, j’ai modifié cette phrase par ‘lorsque suffisamment d’enfants seront morts’.  Parce qu’évidemment, nous n’y sommes pas encore“.

Avant que la variole ait été maîtrisée par un vaccin, elle fut responsable de la mort d’environ 500 millions d’individus.  Et, il n’y a que 60 ans à peine, la polio paralysait 16,000 américains annuellement alors que la rubéole causait des malformations de naissance et des troubles de développement du cerveau chez plus de 20,000 nouveaux-nés.  La rougeole s’attaquait à 4 millions d’enfants causant 3,000 décès par année.  La bactérie Haemophilus influenzae de type B (bacille de Pfeiffer) provoquait une forme de méningite (Hib) chez plus de 15,000 enfants dont plusieurs étaient victimes de lésions permanentes au cerveau.  La mortalité infantile et l’espérance de vie réduite – aujourd’hui perçues comme un problème des pays en développement – étaient alors une réalité du monde occidental.

Depuis quelques semaines, nous avons droit à un interminable débat entre ceux qui recommandent la vaccination contre le virus A-H1N1 et ceux qui s’y refusent catégoriquement.  Sur Internet et la blogosphère, un nombre impressionnant de gens s’improvisent scientifiques et n’hésitent pas à rejeter le vaccin.  Certains vont jusqu’à vanter les mérites de l’homoépathie et de la naturopathie.  Le documentaire québécois “Silence on vaccine“, que mon ami Renart a affiché sur son blogue, alimente le mythe qui veut que les vaccins sont directement responsables de l’autisme.  Déjà en 1905, le mathématicien et physicien français Henri Poincaré soulignait que l’attirance vers les pseudo-sciences gagnait en popularité parce que les gens “savent que la vérité peut être souvent cruelle, et nous nous demandons si l’illusion n’est pas plus réconfortante“.  Une centaine d’années plus tard, l’astronome Carl Sagan en arrivait à des conclusions similaires: la science perd du terrain face à la pseudo-science parce que cette dernière offre un plus grand confort.  “Un nombre important de ces croyances tiennent compte des réels besoins humains que notre société semble incapable de combler adéquatement.“  Sagan s’est également questionné sur l’attirance des américains envers la réincanation, le spiristime (communications avec les esprits) et les extraterrestres.  “Il existe des besoins médicaux qui ne trouvent pas réponse, des besoins spirituels, et des besoins de communion avec l’ensemble de l’humanité.“

Et si vous recherchez une nouvelle assertion pour supporter votre système de croyances, ça n’a jamais été aussi facile.  L’Internet offre un pêle-mêle d’informations, des données, des recherches, spéculations, demi-vérités, anecdotes et conjectures concernant la santé et la médecine.  C’est également une puissante démocratisation de l’information qui tend à minimiser l’autorité scientifique tout en donnant le pouvoir aux individus.  Dans un monde où tous sont partie prenante, ce que Jenny McCarthy appelle “l’Université Google” – où les gens se révoltent devant l’immunologie avant même d’analyser les bienfaits de la vaccination, se présente une nouvelle approche pour prendre soin de ses enfants.  Grâce à Internet, tous et chacun peuvent devenir leur propre investigateur médical.

Wired has published a dazzling and timely story on the rising toll of childhood diseases in the U.S. due to the increasing numbers of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children. Author, Amy Wallace, correctly notes that this issue has bridged those on both sides of the political spectrum (we’ve observed vaccination being framed on the far right as some sort of tool of one-world health care, a division of one-world government); but the inescapable fact is that the anti-vaccination movement’s ringleaders are firmly on the liberal-left-Hollywood side of politics, which is a disaster for public health. Here’s how her article begins:

“To hear his enemies talk, you might think Paul Offit is the most hated man in America. A pediatrician in Philadelphia, he is the coinventor of a rotavirus vaccine that could save tens of thousands of lives every year. Yet environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. slams Offit as a ‘biostitute’ who whores for the pharmaceutical industry. Actor Jim Carrey calls him a profiteer and distills the doctor’s attitude toward childhood vaccination down to this chilling mantra: ‘Grab ‘em and stab ‘em.’ Recently, Carrey and his girlfriend, Jenny McCarthy, went on CNN’s Larry King Live and singled out Offit’s vaccine, RotaTeq, as one of many unnecessary vaccines, all administered, they said, for just one reason: ‘Greed.’”

It doesn’t matter that RotaTeq protects children against the Rotavirus, whose symptoms of severe diarrhoea lead to some half-a-million deaths per year, there is simply no reasoning against the anti-vax movement’s belief that big pharma is evil. So while many Democratic politicians would be appalled if asked to denounce evolution as a tool of “big science,” they appear happy to minister to the idea that vaccination is not scientific. As Wallace notes:

“There are anti-vaccine Web sites, Facebook groups, email alerts, and lobbying organizations. Politicians ignore the movement at their peril, and, unlike in the debates over creationism and global warming, Democrats have proved just as likely as Republicans to share misinformation and fuel anxiety.

US senators John Kerry of Massachusetts and Chris Dodd of Connecticut have both curried favor with constituents by trumpeting the notion that vaccines cause autism. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a scion of the most famous Democratic family of all, authored a deeply flawed 2005 Rolling Stone piece called “Deadly Immunity.” In it, he accused the government of protecting drug companies from litigation by concealing evidence that mercury in vaccines may have caused autism in thousands of kids. The article was roundly discredited for, among other things, overestimating the amount of mercury in childhood vaccines by more than 100-fold, causing Rolling Stone to issue not one but a prolonged series of corrections and clarifications. But that did little to unring the bell.”

Wallace and Wired, by contrast, have produced a model of science journalism – the article needs to be read for one of the best descriptions of how virulent measles is once one person is infected, and for how elegantly and economically it manages to dispel so much patent nonsense put out by the anti-vax loons. We can only hope this article gets the National Magazine Award it so richly deserves, that it shames Arianna Huffington and her friends (who have turned the Huffington Post into a venue for all manner of anti-vax vapidity), and that those on the liberal left stop patting themselves on the head for not being creationists, and realize that left-liberal irrationality might actually do more harm than Bush’s war on science ever did.

US health authorities on Friday announced plans for a massive vaccination campaign intended to protect millions of Americans, with the first distribution of 600,000 vaccine doses set for Tuesday, two weeks ahead of schedule. 

Part of the reason for the tepid enthusiasm may be that the vaccine campaign is being buffeted by political and social currents: wariness of mainstream medicine combined with suspicion of big government and a general unease and complacency about vaccines. The last massive government campaign in 1976 for Swine Flu was a significant failure with numerous reports of side effects including an increase in Guillain Barre Disease, GBS.

Dr. David Sencer, http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/30/swine.flu.1976/index.html head of the CDC at the time, devised and pushed the Swine Flu’s massive government campaign and claimed no one every told him that there were any dangers or links to the vaccine.  He continues to say that he defends the vaccination campaign that led to more deaths than the disease, but says he’s sorry for the people killed or sickened.

Dr. Michael Hattwick , then director of the surveillance team says there was absolute evidence that the vaccine had significant side effects and did tell his superiors. From an interview with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes http://www.whale.to/vaccines/swine.html excerpted:

WALLACE: Dr Michael Hattwick directed the surveillance team for the swine flu program at the CDC. His job was to find out what possible complications could arise from taking the shot and to report his findings to those in charge. Did you know ahead of time, Dr Hattwick that there had been case reports of neurological disorders, neurological illness, apparently associated with the injection of influenza vaccine?

DR MICHAEL HNITWlCK: Absolutely

WALLACE: You did?

DR HATIWICK: Yes

WALLACE: How did you know that?

WALLACE: So you told your superiors – the men in charge of the swine flu immunization program – about the possibility of neurological disorders?

DR RATTWICK: Absolutely

The government absolutely knew about the possibility of side effects in 1976.  You are sadly mistaken if you don’t think they know now, that the latest government approved H1N1 monovalent influenza vaccine will also have side effects.

The issue has caught the attention of the CDC’s Team B, a group of outside experts that the CDC has set up to critique and offer advice on the agency’s pandemic response.  Dr. David Sencer, who headed the CDC during the 1976 swine flu crisis, said via email that “it is likely that Team B will discuss” the data and the dilemma they pose. Other members of Team B are antiviral expert Dr. Frederick Hayden of the University of Virginia, Dr. Marc Lipsitch, an infectious diseases modelling expert from Harvard University, and Dr. Harvey Fineberg, head of the U.S. Institute of Medicine and author of the report on the 1976 swine flu affair. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090925/health/health_flu_vaccine_concerns

Wapo wrote, “ Billions of tax dollars have been paid to giant pharmaceutical companies. Millions of doses of vaccine are on their way to huge warehouses across the country.”  The full ingredients of the Swine Flu and seasonal vaccines are not disclosed on their patient inserts, but include thimerosal.  The Eli Lilly Protection Act ended up being repealed, but drug makers continue to be shielded from having to pay compensation for damages.

Indeed Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s Immunization director is correct when she says “this is just the beginning.”
