Actor and aviator Cliff Robertson (Uncle Ben to Spiderman folks) was unable, for health reasons, to join us for his induction into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame. Luckily he felt well enough (Must have been a spider bite! Sorry, I had to) to call us on the phone and tell us what aviation has meant to him and his life. Listen below:

Cliff Robertson Hall of Fame Portrait

He is a pilot, an Academy Award and Emmy-Award-winning actor as well as the founder of a very popular youth program within the EAA.  He is Cliff Robertson.

Robertson was born in La Jolla, California in 1925 and it was here that he developed a love for aviation. He would ride his bike several miles each day to work at Speer airport, where he would clean airplanes in return for flights in a piper cub. However, Cliff would leave the area to serve his country during World War Two and attend Antioch College in Ohio. After college he went to New York and started work acting on stage, film and eventually television, working in such varied shows as the Twilight Zone and Gidget.

His acting career then took off, and he was personally chosen by John F. Kennedy to portray the president in the motion picture P.T. 109 —the story of Kennedy’s heroic World War II exploits as a P.T. Boat skipper. Perhaps he is best known for starring in Charly, an adaptation of Flowers for Algernon for which he won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Actor. Other films included Picnic, Sunday in New York, Autumn Leaves, Too Late the Hero, Three Days of the Condor, Obsession, J. W. Coop, Star 80 and Malone. More recently, Robertson’s career has had a resurgence. He appeared as Uncle Ben Parker in the first movie adaptation of Spider-Man, as well as in the sequels Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3.

Yet with all his success and fame, Cliff’s love for aviation has never waned. While filming in England, Robertson decided to join the Fair oaks Flying Club and soloed in a De Havilland Tiger Moth…he enjoyed the airplane so much he bought one of his own, and eventually owned three of the type. This lead Cliff to purchase another British legend: a Supermarine Spitfire. Over the years he owned other aircraft, including a Messerschmitt Me-108 and a Beech Baron 58.  In addition to powered flight, Robertson enjoys gliding and owns a two place glider, a Grob Twin Astir.

However, aviation for Robertson is not strictly a leisurely affair. In 1969, Robertson helped organize an effort to fly food and medical supplies to war ravaged Biafra, Nigeria. For this effort he was presented with AOPA’s Sharples Award, given for “the year’s greatest, selfless commitment to general aviation by a private citizen.” When a famine hit Ethiopia in 1978, Robertson again organized relief flights of supplies to that country. In addition, he is dedicated to helping others experience the joy of flight. Robertson takes an active part in the Cliff Robertson Work Experience Program. Each summer, two youths, 16 or 17 years old, are invited to Oshkosh, through the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Air Academy, where they work for ground and flight instruction. The EAA’s Young Eagles program began in 1992 with Robertson as its first honorary chairman. In 1999, he helped kick off the EAA’s campaign, “Vision of Eagles”, a unique set of initiatives designed to educate, motivate and provide direction to young people through aviation-based activities. As if this wasn’t enough, he has received the EAA’s highest honor, the “Freedom of Flight Award,” for his role in the organization’s “In Pursuit of Dreams” presentation.

For his being one of America’s most influential ambassadors of flight, the San Diego Air & Space Museum take great pride in inducting Cliff Robertson into its International Aerospace Hall of Fame.

“The documents in this series were kept by two brothers, William Henry Street and John Ambrose Sherman Street, who were born in Burton, Sunbury County, the sons of Hon. Samuel Deny Street and Abigail Freeman.  They were educated at public schools in Burton and Fredericton.

William Henry Street was born April 11, 1793.  After completing his education, he engaged in the mercantile business in Saint John.  He was twice mayor of Saint John (1835-1836 and 1848-1849) and served in the militia.  In the General Election of 1842, he ran for Saint John City and, after protest, was awarded the seat.  He sat until the dissolution of the House in 1846 when he retired from politics.  W.H. Street was married twice: in 1824 to Mary Bruce, and in 1847 to Sarah Boyd Orr.  He died in Saint John on April 4, 1875.

John Ambrose Sherman Street was born September 22, 1795.  He studied in his father’s law office and was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar on February 22, 1817.  He practiced law at Chatham, Northumberland County, and in 1823 married Jane Isabella Hubbard.  He was elected to the Assembly as a Conservative member for Northumberland County at a by-election in 1833.  He sat in the House almost continuously until his defeat in 1856.  He then moved to Fredericton and unsuccessfully ran for York County in 1861 and 1865.  He was made a member of the Executive Council in 1851, and served as Attorney-General until 1854.  He died in 1865.

The Street Records pertain to the legal and business affairs of the brothers.  The material is catalogued alphabetically according to client’s name.  The types of documents found here include: indentures, deeds, declarations, bonds, assignments, correspondence, and leases.  The material dates from 1812 to 1863.  This series measures 9 centimeters.”

I just happened to pop in this new store on Robertson. I’m so glad I did. What lured me in were the amazing vintage/antique sewing machines lining the the front window from ground to ceiling.

What kept me at the English store (for about 1/2 an hour) were the amazing clothes—and the design of the store.  Allsaints was so inspiring.  I love the attention to detail on all the pieces. The clothes are so artistic (like some of the better designs on Project Runway).  I wanted all of the dresses. They aren’t nearly as expensive as some of the clothes on Robertson.

For $200, you can get a beautiful Allsaints dress that looks like it costs $1200—seriously.

Of course All Saints is European..you can tell the second you set foot in the shop. The heavy use of industrial design (like the sewing machines, gears and old hanging lights) compliments the new take on industrial-aged clothing.

I’m hoping people will take to the store. It’s right near Kitson, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, and the infamous Ivy restaurant.  Allsaints is a great edgy addition to the street where Paris Hilton, and other (psedo) celebrities spend time posing for paparazzi while shopping. For some reason I can’t really see Paris shopping at Allsaints. I can see Karen O there, though—for sure.

Pero mi post anterior no era si no el preludio necesario para introducir la teoría política de la desinformación. Hay pocas pruebas, y es un fenómeno sobre el que no podemos experimentar, luego es tremendamente fácil orquestar todo un armazón de mentiras rumores, medias verdades y secretismos sobre el fenómeno, siempre y cuando haya intereses en ello.

Y a eso vamos. Remontémonos al caso Roswell, pues fue a partir de él cuando todo este tejido empezó a tomar forma. A raíz de este caso  Estados Unidos comenzó a practicar una política de secreto entre los secretos y desinformación a “tutiplén”. El senador Barry Goldwater ya comentó la existencia de carpetas OVNIS clasificadas más allá de lo “ultrasecreto”.

Pero ¿dónde está el motivo? ¿Qué intereses oculta esa capa de ocultación y mentiras, cual maquillaje indecente de mujer de la vida?

Pues esta pregunta tiene distintas respuestas, algunas interrelacionadas. La primera y más obvia (ya noto estrellarse en mi cara los tomates de los escépticos, esto es, de las víctimas desamparadas de todo este plan desinformador) es la siguiente:

-          EEUU necesita conservar a cualquier precio la superioridad tecnológica y militar frente al resto de los países, que desde su cúspide de la “libertad” (yo aquí me parto) siempre considera posibles potencias enemigas. Y este pensamiento es hasta comprensible y justificado, al menos para la actual situación de disgregación e insolidaridad de nuestro planeta.

Pero como ya dije, no tiene respuesta única y existen otros motivos más o menos racionales y comprensibles, generalmente parapetados detrás de la excusa de la seguridad nacional:

-          Evitar el pánico entre la población. Fue en este país donde en 1938 Orson Welles  realizó el experimento radiofónico de “La Guerra de los Mundos”, con caóticas consecuencias.

-          Soslayar los inevitables movimientos pseudoreligiosos que surgirían defendiendo y atacando a los “visitantes”. No voy a ahondar en este motivo tan trillado en el mundo cinematográfico.

-          Impedir el descontento generalizado y justificado que se generaría ante el reconocimiento de la existencia de una potencia “extranjera” ante la cual el estado no puede defender a sus ciudadanos. ¿Para qué pagamos impuestos entonces?

-          Muy relacionado con el anterior, evitar el ridículo de reconocer un fenómeno sobre el que no pueden proveer explicaciones convincentes y precisas.

Y como consecuencia de mantener en el tiempo esta aptitud:

-          No reconocer acusaciones de mentiras, ocultaciones, maniobras de desinformación y montajes ilegales de diversas agencias de gobierno.

Sólo esto último causaría inexorablemente la caída del gobierno reinante, y por tanto, ningún gobierno lo reconocerá, ni siquiera el esperado gobierno de Obama.

Son muchas mentiras y muchas implicaciones, y cada vez son más, y costaría más admitir la verdad.

Por supuesto, para el público general sólo quedan pruebas indirectas y circunstanciales, como:

- la ordenanza militar AFR (Regulación Fuerza Aérea) 200-2, prohibiendo al público la divulgación de información relacionada a observaciones de OVNIS

- la ordenanza militar JANAP-146 (Publicación Conjunta Ejercito, Armada, Fuerza Aérea),  que establece penas de 10 años de prisión y 10 mil dólares de multa para los que realicen divulgaciones no autorizadas de una observación OVNI. Aplicable a los militares pero también a los pilotos de líneas aéreas civiles y a los capitanes de la marina mercante.

No hay lugar a dudas, el gobierno de los Estados Unidos ha usado la desinformación tanto reductora como amplificadora, desde el caso Roswell.

La reductora la podemos apreciar en testimonios recortados, expedientes perdidos, registros borrados, amenazas ante la divulgación de datos, …

El astrónomo Hynek, asesor de la Fuerza Aérea Norteamericana de 1948 a 1966, reconoció haber ayudado a ridiculizar numerosos casos dándoles interpretaciones astronómicas no justificadas.

El comité Robertson de la CIA, comenzó a funcionar en 1953 y decretó que los profesionales de los medios de comunicación tenían que ridiculizar los temas que trataban la presencia extraterrestre, bajo la amenaza de despido fulminante. En concreto en su Informe Durant recomendaba ridiculizar “el fenómeno de los platillos voladores” y la posibilidad de la vida extraterrestre por motivos de seguridad nacional. Un ejemplo de ello es la tremenda influencia negativa que supuso para el Proyecto Libro Azul:

En cuanto a la desinformación amplificadora, el caso más claro es el de la supuesta autopsia a un extraterrestre de Roswell, como ya comentamos en el estudio del caso. Pero podemos mencionar también a los pretendidos contactos de Adamski con un Venusino en 1952. O el supuesto ufólogo Bennewicz.

Estas técnicas permiten adicionalmente desacreditar a ufólogos crédulos.

“La desinformación reductora es eficaz sobre aquellos que no desean admitir la posibilidad de la hipótesis extraterrestre. La desinformación amplificadora está dirigida a los otros.“

A veces se usan ambas a la vez, como es el caso del libro del “ufólogo” Karl Pflock “Roswell en Perspectiva” ex integrante de la CIA y del Departamento de Defensa, donde a través de recortar testimonios e informaciones, comentado que la mayoría de los restos encontrados pertenecían a un globo,  y haciendo un eficaz uso de la sutileza, llegar a plantear nuevas alternativas al suceso.

Demasiado gasto económico, diría yo, para un fenómeno inexistente.

Seguro que algún lector habrá caído en la cuenta de que la mayoría de las motivaciones, y pruebas de las desinformaciones sólo aplican a EEUU.

Sin embargo, no se debe olvidar la tremenda influencia que, desde los años 50, EEUU ejerce sobre el resto de países. Influencia mediática (cine, tele, radio, noticias, periódicos, documentales divulgativos, …), política, económica y prácticamente en todos los órdenes de la sociedad. Pensemos en Halloween, Papa Noel, el árbol de Navidad, la Coca-cola, el consumismo extremo, …

De cualquier forma los gobiernos tienen mucho miedo a hacer el ridículo (aunque sólo sea mediático) en el panorama internacional. Por otro lado no ganaría nada creando una sensación de inseguridad en la población, y dando crédito a acontecimientos que no pueden explicar.

No obstante, hay naciones como Bélgica, China, Francia, y más recientemente Canadá y Rusia, cuya política empieza a ser distinta.

Uno de mis escépticos e inteligentes lectores quería tener ejemplos (para contrastar la posibilidad que le comentaba) de desinformaciones orquestadas a alto nivel, a ser posible internacionalmente. Para mí, la principal prueba a este respecto es el miedo científico a reconocer en público que se pueden cruzar enormes distancias interestelares en pequeñas cantidades de tiempo. ¿Habéis visto alguna vez algún científico, algún documental, algún coloquio que haya siquiera insinuado esta realidad tácita de la relatividad especial? Yo desde luego no.

Pero por supuesto hay muchos ejemplos más. He aquí algunas de las mentiras montadas políticamente para ocultar otra realidad:

a)      Consideradas públicamente descubiertas

1. El Cambio climático. Aún hoy existen muchas personas que no reconocen esta realidad. No quieren reconocer el efecto nocivo del hombre en el clima, porque no les interesa. Aún cuando nos jugamos el futuro de nuestros hijos y nietos.
2. El Watergate. Menudo escándalo fue en su momento. Quizá sólo afectó a los norteamericanos, pero es de este país del que ha surgido la desinformación OVNI también.
3. Las armas de destrucción masiva de Hassan Husein. Otra gran mentira orquestada en ese país cuna de las mayores campañas desinformativas. Y esta vez (de nuevo) arrastró a muchos países en su mentira.
4. Lo malo que es el aceite de oliva.
5. Lo bueno que es la leche de vaca.
6. Que el hombre nunca ha pisado la luna (os parecerá mentira, pero aún me siguen preguntando por eso).
7. Madoff
8. El corralito argentino, o mejor dicho, lo que lo produjo.
9. …

b)      Aún no desveladas

1. El asesinato de Kennedy
2. La autorregulación del libre mercado sin límites, cuando nos estamos quedando sin recursos
3. La verdadera virulencia de la gripe A
4. …

Y estas son sólo algunas, y en realidad me considero un neófito en el entorno de la política. Seguro que pensando un poco el aguzado lector encontrará muchos otros ejemplos.

Porque realmente creo que aquí nos estamos jugando algo muy importante. Algo mucho más importante que la supremacía tecnológica y militar de una nación. Estamos hablando de la supervivencia de la especie humana misma.

Debemos conseguir esa condición de “civilización inmortal” a la que ya me he referido en anteriores ocasiones. Y debemos hacerlo antes de que produzca alguno de los motivos de apuntaba como posible extinciones en: http://cheluman.wordpress.com/2009/08/14/la-ecuacion-de-cheluman-ii/

Esto puede y debe ser una carrera, cuya meta es la inmortalidad de la civilización, y debemos emplear todas las energías y recursos que podamos en ella, incluyendo la muy importante y a la vez desaprovechada ventaja de contar con restos de tecnología alienígena.

Unos cuantos científicos, contados con los dedos de las manos, con visiones muy parciales de las cosas, y con absoluta prohibición de revelar ningún tipo de detalle a la “comunidad científica”, poco pueden hacer comparado con la total compartición de información y acceso a recursos que debería realizarse con este tipo de material.

Y ya no hablo sólo de materiales, si no de finalidades, objetivos, motivaciones, …

Puede que este “detalle” nos haga perder la batalla, y como suele pasar en entornos económicos, el egoísmo de unos pocos haga sufrir a todos.

La web 2.0, como filosofía, parece un gran avance en este sentido, pero  aún no ha calado lo suficiente en ciertos países, en determinados estamentos, en algunos individuos. Puede que estos individuos nos estén condenando a la extinción como especie.  

Presionemos entre todos para que haya absoluta transparencia en estos temas, en todos los países, en todos los lugares, entre todos los individuos, entre “todos aquellos que no ponen en duda lo que aparece en las noticias”.

A fitting end for Andrus and the Argos

In an all-around ugly season, the Argos saved perhaps their worst performance for last. Despite resting several starters with the playoffs looming, the Montreal Alouettes took command early and romped to a 42-17 win in Saturday’s season finale at Rogers Centre.

The Alouettes, with backup quarterback Anthony McPherson starting in place of the league’s top passer, Anthony Calvillo, scored on their first three possessions and took a 26-4 lead to halftime. McPherson was near flawless all afternoon, completing 16-of-20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to third-stringer Chris Leak to start the fourth quarter. McPherson also ran for 55 yards.

For the Argos, it was only a fitting end to a season of frustration. Even so, head coach Bart Andrus had positive things to say about his squad after the game.

“I told them how much they persevered throughout this year,” Andrus said of his post-game speech. “The way they came to work, their professionalism — this is a good group of people.

“When you have a group that works as has as they work, it’s just a matter of time before positive things begin to happen.”

Of course, time will tell if Andrus is around to witness a possible turnaround. He declined to comment after the game regarding his future and the future of the franchise as a whole. After a 3-15 campaign and with talk of the team potentially being sold, Andrus is as good a bet as anyone not to be back in 2010.

With little more to play for than pride, Andrus handed the starting quarterback duties for the finale to rookie Stephen Reaves. The southpaw struggled from the get-go in his first CFL start, overthrowing Brad Smith on Toronto’s opening possession for an interception that led to a Damon Duval field goal. In all, Reaves threw four picks and had another negated by a roughing-the-passer penalty.

“It was tough,” Reaves said afterward. “I pressed too much. I have to do a better job of taking what the defense gives me. I’d love to have a few of those back. Overall, a tough day against a tough defense.”

Reaves wasn’t the only Argo to slip up on an error-filled day. Andre Durie returned a first quarter kick 104 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to have it called back because of an unnecessary roughness call on Raymond Fontaine. Earlier in the quarter, long snapper Etienne Legare airmailed a snap to Justin Medlock, resulting in a turnover and an 18-yard McPherson touchdown pass to Kerry Walkins one play later.

Running back Jamal Robertson scored Toronto’s only touchdown on a one-yard run late in the third quarter but struggled horribly the rest of the afternoon, finishing with negative six yards on five carries. The Argos finished with zero rushing yards as a team.

If it’s true that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, then the Argos will have something to take from this nightmarish season. Durie, for one, suggested the team gained mental toughness that will provide an important boost in the future.

“We’re looking forward to more stability next year,” he said after the game. “Every championship team goes through losing, and we had a lot of it this year. We all stayed mentally strong though, and we’ll take that into next season for sure.”

Perhaps the biggest thing that will come from Saturday’s loss is closure. And with that, a fresh start.

“I’ll go to bat with these guys anytime,” linebacker Zeke Moreno said after the game. “I’d love to come back next year and see no new faces. We have the talent and the potential.”

Pass me a Screwdriver

The screwdriver is a necessary and required tool for those of us in the art department. My preference goes to the all-in-one retractable bit screwdrivers which are great for quick on-set use but for during construction or set decoration I prefer using my 65 piece screwdriver set. Make sure your screwdriver set is made of strong metal and magnetic alloy to keep your screws from dropping and reduce stripping. I find the worst is the Black & Decker bits and screwdrivers which are weak and prone to stripping the Phillips, PoziDriv, and Robertson bits. Mastercraft and Craftsman are excellent.

One of my pet peeves during the prepping of a set is when I ask a set dresser or Art PA, etc. to pass me a Robertson #2 and they stare at me blankly and then say, “What’s that?” While I expect this from newer, more green crew members it always surprises me how many people don’t know the names and sizes of certain tools, most annoying and simplest of which is the screwdriver. So I figure everyone has to learn somewhere and hopefully you get something out of this next time you’re asked to pass a specific screwdriver. When I was first starting out I thought Hex Keys were called X-Keys. LOL. I felt like the biggest loser when I found out I’d been saying it wrong because I didn’t bother to find out differently.

Arland Bruce III and the Ticats got the best of his former team Friday

For a team that hasn’t caught much in the way of breaks this season, the Argos must have thought the football gods were finally smiling upon them when Zeke Moreno intercepted the first play from scrimmage Friday against Hamilton and returned it for a touchdown. Then came the penalty flag — offside, and the score was wiped off the board.

“It’s frustrating,” Moreno said afterward. “You make a big play and have it taken away because a player apparently lined up an inch offside. It’s just deflating.”

The Ticats capitalized on the revived drive, converting a field goal en route to a commanding 20-0 halftime lead and eventual 26-17 win — the Argos’ 11th loss in their last 12 games and seventh in eight games at Rogers Centre.

Following a frustrating trend, Toronto’s offense was again non-existent in the first two quarters, gaining a total of 67 yards, including just 30 through the air on three Kerry Joseph completions.

Hamilton benefited from late first quarter gamble by Argos coach Bart Andrus to go for it on third & one from Toronto’s own 38. Joseph was stopped short on a sneak, giving the Ticats terrific field position that led to their first touchdown, a one-yard run by short yardage quarterback Aaron Tafralis. Afterward, Andrus was unapologetic for the risk.

“We’ve been picking up third & ones all year,” he said. “That’s the first one in recent history that I can recall we didn’t make.

“We just didn’t get any push,” he added. “It comes down to the fact that you’ve got to be able to block people.”

The Argos finally did get on the board on the opening drive of the second half, scoring when Joseph found Jeff Johnson on third & goal from the one-yard line.

After Nick Setta 34-yard field goal gave the Ticats a 23-7 lead late in the third, Andrus found himself in another position to gamble. On third & five on the Hamilton 10-yard line midway through the fourth, he opted for a Justin Medlock field goal, which kept it a two-possession game when a touchdown and a two-point conversion could have pulled Toronto within one score. Again, when called upon after the game, Andrus stood by his decision.

“I didn’t consider going for it,” Andrus said, “We had seven minutes left and got three more possesions, but we only managed to score on one of them.

“The problem, to me, in those last seven minutes is we didn’t stop them. We gave up two long drives. What we needed was a couple two-and-outs.”

The one score Toronto did add was a 95-yard hookup from Joseph to Jeremy Carter to cut the lead to 23-17, the Argos’ longest play from scrimmage this season. Still, in typical Argo fashion, it was too little, too late.

For the second straight week, Joseph finished with nice numbers that were padded by a furious late push that fell short. He completed 14-of-23 attempts for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Hamilton’s Kevin Glenn outdid him, completing 28-of-38 for 322 yards and one score.

One Argo was able to reach a personal milestone — running back Jamal Robertson eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark late in the first quarter, become the sixth player in team history to reach the mark and the first since Michael Jenkins in 2001.

“It’s a positive note,” Robertson said after the game, “but with the way the season has gone, it’s kind of hard to celebrate.

“I’m proud of it,” he added. “It’s good for myself and for the organization. But when you have lots of yards and not enough wins, it’s hard to get excited.”

In a season filled with tough breaks and disappointment, the Argos have been able to find slight relief in their rivals from Steeltown. Though just 3-12 on the season, the Argos have taken two of three from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, including their only home win of the year — a 25-22 overtime decision on Sept. 11. Toronto looks to close the season series with another win Friday at Rogers Centre and play the spoiler against a Hamilton team that’s suddenly fighting for its playoff life.

The Ticats come in having lost four straight and seven of their last nine to drop to 6-9 on the season, leaving them tied with Winnipeg for the CFL’s final playoff spot. Still, Argos head coach Bart Andrus insists he’s approaching Friday’s tilt as just another game — not as an opportunity to deal a blow to his team’s biggest rival.

“The game itself far outweights anything,” Andrus said after Thursday’s walk-through. “It’s all about competing to win regardless of the situation. We’re just in it to win the game.”

Though the end results haven’t been there, Hamilton has received a boost from quarterback Kevin Glenn in recent weeks. Glenn, who has split time with Quinton Porter for much of the season, got the call Sunday against Montreal, passing for 506 yards and three touchdowns in an eventual 41-38 loss. Glenn has had his share of success against Toronto this season as well — he threw for 273 yards in the Ticats’ 34-15 Labour Day win and scrambled 18 yards to score in the final minute and send the Sept. 11 game to overtime.

“The key is to contain him,” Andrus said of the Hamilton quarterback. “Putting a little bit of pressure on him, making him throw early and making him uncomfortable in the pocket — that has more of an effect on a passer than anything.

“He hurt us last game,” he added. “We want to make sure we bottle him up, but at the same time put as much pressure on him as we can.”

Meanwhile, Andrus is going with Kerry Joseph as his starting quarterback for the third straight week. Joseph threw for 331 yards in last week’s 22-19 loss to Edmonton, though the majority came in a late fourth quarter rally that came up short. In eight starts and two relief appearances this season, Joseph has thrown just eight touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

One bright spot in Toronto’s offense has been running back Jamal Robertson. Robertson enters Friday’s game fifth in the CFL with 990 rushing yards, putting himself in position to become the first Argo to rush for over 1,000 yards since Michael Jenkins accomplished the feat in 2001.

“It’s a nice mark for myself,” Robertson said Thursday of approaching the milestone. “It’s been awhile since anyone has done it in Toronto, so it’s good to bring a little positive to the organization in the midst of a rough year.”

Robertson has had his two best games of the season against Hamilton — he rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown in Toronto’s 30-17 season-opening win on Canada Day and added 117 and two scores in the win on Sept. 11.

“I guess it’s just the luck of the draw,” Robertson said of his play against the Ticats. “I got some good blocking and caught a few breaks in those games. It was nice to come out with wins in both.”

The Argos’ defense receive a blow earlier this week with the news that defensive end Claude Harriott will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered in last week’s loss to Edmonton. Harriott’s absence means Jonathan Brown, who missed the first nine games of the season while recovering from a back injury, will be called upon to play a bigger role — one he’s already proven capable of handling.

“Claude is a great player and has been a great asset to our team,” defensive tackle Adriano Belli said Thursday. “But we’re comfortable with J.B.. He brings great enthusiasm to the team and to the locker room. He’s one of the only players older than me, so he makes me feel good.”

Brown, who has three sacks in five games since returning from the injured list, has been an East Division All-Star four straight seasons. His 50 sacks since joining the Argos in 2004 are amongst CFL leaders in that period.

A win Friday would clinch the Ballard Trophy, given annually to the winner of the Argos-Ticats season series and one Andrus’ wouldn’t mind taking home.

“If that’s the prize for the game, then we want it,” he said. “If it means winning the game, we’ll take it. We’re all about that.”

Feminism involves political and sociological theories and philosophies concerned with issues of gender difference, as well as a movement that advocates more gender-specific rights for women and campaigns for women’s rights and interests.

Being Jane: Feminism: The word seems well-enough defined in our society. It means the belief in the need to secure, or a commitment to securing, rights and opportunities for women equal to those of men…Too many people hear the word “feminism” and believe it still represents women who harbor resentment against men. Others take a more tongue-in-cheek approach and immediately think of the bra-burning parties of the 1960s. Some women of younger generations have no recollection of feminism whatsoever and don’t identify with it at all.

My Thoughts

When a fellow blogger commented on divorce and it being attributed to feminism, I started thinking, why would a connection between feminism and divorce even be made.  The only reason I could find was that the numbers found suggested more women than men initiated divorce.  This is misleading. Granted feminisim may have something to do with women being able to be initiators, but the number is still misleading.   First we don’t know all the factors pertaining to divorce – a big one is the reason WHY the divorce was initiated.  All the numbers tell us is who had the guts to do it.  The reasons for initiation – be them good or bad – we will never know.

But this gave way to deeper thinking for me.  People, in general, always seem to attach negativity to feminism.  It is as if women fighting for equality and the moral/ethical treatment of other women are monsters, destroyers of a ‘traditional view’ of a woman;  a weaker, less capable woman perhaps?  This is a topic of great stress for me.  I have found myself in deep conversations about being a woman and feminism… inevitably fierce emotions swell up to the surface and tumble out. Probably, because I consider myself a feminist. However, I am not a man hater or a bra burner.  I consider myself an advocate for women and equality of women, not a promoter of or at the cost of the degradation of men or families (being a child of divorce myself).  In my opinion, and I am sure many others’, being a feminist is not about tearing a gender down, it is about bringing a gender up and finding balance.

Now I am a firm believer in equality.  I also believe a woman can do whatever she sets her mind to do and shouldn’t be torn down because of it.  However, women and female concepts are often treated with disdain, and have been for centuries.  I cringe when someone calls out  – “you hit like a girl” or “you fight like a girl” or “don’t be a girl”.  Women are great fighters (I don’t just mean physical), but for some cultural reason, women have been put in the ‘weak’ box.  Being a feminist means breaking that box apart.

There is nothing wrong with being a feminist.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with fighting like a girl.  There is nothing terrible about wanting and demanding equality, respect and integrity in relationships, work, and society.

Mathis, the new Yankee Killer, now that David Ortiz is washed up

Forget Jeff Mathis’ career .200 batting average coming into this year’s playoffs. The Angels’ backup catcher, whose doubles in the 12th in Game 2 and in the 10th tonight went to waste, came through with another two-bagger, this one to drive home the deciding run in Los Angeles’ 5-4, 11-inning Game 3 win to cut the Yankees’ ALCS lead to 2-1.

Mathis’ winner came after a puzzling two-out, nobody on decision by Joe Girardi to replace David Robertson with Alfredo Alceves. Howie Kendrick, who homered and tripled earlier in the game, singled off the new reliever before Mathis brought him around on his shot off the wall in left-center. Even know-it-alls Joe Buck and Tim McCarver were miffed by Girardi’s decision to yank Robertson after just 11 pitches, so there’s no use in me trying to figure that one out.

New York used solo homers from Derek Jeter, Alex Roidriguez and Johnny Damon to jump to a 3-0 lead before Little Andy let it get away by giving up a solo blast to Kendrick and a two-out, two-run bomb to Vladimir “Washed Up” Guerrero in the sixth. Macier Izturis’ sac fly after Kendrick’s triple gave the Angels a 4-3 lead in the seventh, but Jorge “Rat” Posada tied it with a solo shot to dead center off Kevin Jepsen in the eighth.

Even after Posada’s homer, the Angels blew a couple chances to put it away — Bobby Abreu was thrown out trying to stretch a leadoff double to a triple in the bottom of the eighth and Mathis’ double to start the 10th led to a bases-loaded, one-out jam that Mariano Rivera was able to escape.

All in all, this one comes as a huge relief. After watching five-plus hours to see the Angels blow it Saturday, another four-and-a-half hour Yankee win would’ve been enough to completely kill my spirit.

I imagine the win has to be a bit of a relief for the Angels and their actual fans too — they’re now down 2-1 with a shot at tying the series tomorrow. Scott Kazmir (10-9, 4.89 but 2-2, 1.73 in six starts after coming over from Tampa Bay) and CC Sabathia (19-8, 3.37) have the ball.

The second article that I was going to tackle by Richard Phillips was “The Covenants of God.”  I say “was” because the article is basically a good summary of the covenant theology put forward by O. Palmer Robertson in his book, The Christ of the Covenants. Robertson’s book is foundational for many Reformed covenant theologians.  Rather than review and critique Phillips’ summary, it is probably better to simply shift gears at this point and engage with Robertson’s views directly. While the outlines of his covenant theology are in accord with the Westminster Standards (the bounds within which I consider my own views to be falling as well), I have long felt that Robertson’s definition of the covenant has created more problems than light.  In particular, these fall along (at least) three lines:  historical inaccuracy, a genus-species inversion, and logical ambiguity.  Unpacking and explaining my views on this will require several blogposts, to which I will now turn.

Kerry Joseph is back at the helm for the Argos

Having struggled against seemingly everything the CFL has thrown at them thus far in 2009, the Argos may be relieved to face a team they haven’t seen yet this season. The Edmonton Eskimos (6-8) make their first trip to Rogers Centre Friday to face a Toronto team that needs four straight wins for a shot at a playoff spot.

At 3-11 and three games back of Hamilton and Winnipeg for third place in the East Division, the Argos need a win this weekend just to stay in hunt. Even with the postseason an outside shot at best, Bart Andrus’ squad isn’t about to throw in the towel.

“We know we have to win to control our fate,” quarterback Kerry Joseph said following Thursday’s walk-through. “Mathematically we’re still alive. We know we need some help, but at the same time we know if we don’t take care of own business, nothing else matters.”

Joseph will make his second consecutive start Friday, despite struggling in last week’s 32-22 loss to Saskatchewan. Starting in place of Cody Pickett, Joseph completed just 8-of-22 passes for 82 yards and left at halftime with an apparent neck injury. After Pickett left with an injury of his own, Joseph returned but wasn’t able to lead a fourth quarter comeback. Pickett isn’t expected to dress against Edmonton, meaning third-stringer Stephen Reaves will likely step in as Joseph’s backup.

With questions surrounding the Argos’ pivots, Jamal Robertson will again be called upon to carry a great deal of the offensive load. Robertson is fifth in the league with 945 rushing yards and second with eight touchdowns.

“Whatever they need me to do, I’m going to be there for the team,” Robertson said Thursday. “I’m a running back — I’m going to touch the ball every chance I get and try to make the most of it.”

Ricky Ray is amongst CFL leaders in most passing categories

The Argos’ defense, meanwhile, will be in for a challenge against an Edmonton offense led by quarterback Ricky Ray. Ray is second to Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo in passing yards (3,927), touchdown passes (19) and quarterback rating (97.5) in 2009. Slotback Fred Stamps leads all CFL receivers with 1,033 yards and wide receiver Maurice Mann is tied for third in the league with 66 receptions. Rookie running back Arkee Whitlock is seventh with 798 yards and tied for third with seven rushing touchdowns.

Though the Argos are yet to face the Eskimos this season, they’ll see a familiar face on the opposite side of the field. Cornerback Byron Parker, who was dealt to Edmonton for a fourth-round draft pick on Sept. 28, makes his first appearance against his former team. Despite never getting on the same page with Andrus, the Argos’ coach insists there was never any animosity.

“It was a decision based on our scheme and how guys fit into it,” Andrus said, noting Parker’s absense from training camp was a setback. “I had nothing against Byron, it just boiled down to the fact we had guys we liked better.”

Parker, a two-time CFL All-Star while a member of the Argos, joined the team in August after spending time in camp with the Philadelphia Eagles this summer. He’ll help anchor an Eskimos defense that has been decimated by injuries this season — one that Joseph and the Argos will be looking to capitalize on.

“They’ve been banged up on that side of the ball,” Joseph said Thursday. “We have to try to keep them off balance with the run and the passing game, and just be really agressive from the beginning.

“We just need to stay on the field and score,” he added. “We need to make sure we protect the football and keep drives alive.”

The Argos and Eskimos get underway at 7:30 Friday.

Snookerul scoate bine capul în lume

Finala este văzută drept una care va contribui la dezvoltarea snookerului în lume. Eurosport a stat de vorbă cu doi dintre marii comentatori şi cunoscători ai fenomenului, Mike Hallett şi Joe Johnson.

Imediat după finala de ieri, ultimul spunea: “Este foarte important, din perspectiva popularizării snookerului în alte ţări. Ding este extraordinar pentru dezvoltarea jocului în China, dar Australia şi-a pierdut interesul pentru acest sport. Aşadar, orice realizare a lui Neil Robertson este mai mult decât benefică, deoarece poate contribui la rezolvarea problemei”.

După acest succes, australianul a devenit cel mai titrat jucător din afara teritoriului britanico-irlandez. La vârsta de 27 de ani, el are patru turnee câştigate. În acest clasament, evident neoficial, este urmat chiar de Ding, cu trei turnee. Chinezul, care a debutat în snookerului mare încă de la 17 ani, are acum 22 de ani.

Dacă în urmă cu câţiva ani, clasamentul mondial al primilor 100 avea doar câţiva jucători din afara Marii Britanii şi Irlandei, lucrurile stau puţin altfel acum.

Deşi primele două locuri sunt ale britanicilor, Neil Robertson este pe trei şi promite multe în sezonul curent. În Top 10 este şi Ding, care ocupă locul 9. Marco Fu, din Hong Kong, este pe opt, iar al doilea chinez apare
pe 14 (Wenbo Liang).

În Top 100 sunt 15 jucători din afara insulei, cei mai mulţi din Thailanda şi China. Apariţii exotice sunt Robertson, maltezul Tony Drago (locul 68) şi belgianul Bjorn Haneveer (locul 75).

Scoţianul John Higgins, liderul clasamentului mondial, este unul dintre jucătorii care promovează expansiunea snookerului. În anii 1994/1995, Higgins a devenit primul adolescent care câştiga trei turnee de puncte într-un sezon.

Acum, peste ani, nu a uitat de tinerii jucători şi crede că snookerul ar trebui să fie un sport al întregii lumi. De aceea, a participat la numeroase turnee de popularizare a acestui sport, fiind surprins de dragostea pentru snooker arătată de danezi, germani sau polonezi.

Unul dintre starurile care îl ajută pe scoţian este englezul Mark Selby. “Am avut un meci în Germania şi numărul spectatorilor şi reacţia lor a fost fantastică. Cum ar fi dacă am avea un turneu de puncte aici? Şi nu e vorba doar de Germania. Polonezii şi cehii sunt nebuni după snooker”, a spus acesta.

La popularizare jocului contribuie enorm canalul Eurosport, care transmite toate competiţiile importante în numeroase ţări ale lumii.

Canadianul care a ajuns campion mondial

Canadianul Cliff Thorburn este cel mai titrat “intrus” din snooker. El a cucerit titlul mondial în 1980 şi a reuşit de două ori în carieră break-ul maxim, de 147 de puncte. A fost lider mondial în sezonul 1981-1982.

Eddie Charlton este australianul de la care Robertson a preluat cu succes ştafeta. Charlton nu a câştigat niciun titlu de puncte, dar a fost al treilea jucător al lumii timp
de cinci sezoane, în anii ‘60 şi ‘70. La Campionatul Mondial, a fost de două ori semifinalist şi de opt ori sfertfinalist. El este singurul jucător din lume care a jucat finale de campionat mondial de snooker şi biliard. Din păcate pentru el, nu a triumfat în niciuna.

Sud-africanul Perrie Mans este un celebru jucător al anilor ‘70. În sezonul 1978-79, a fost al doilea cel mai bun jucător al lumii. Tatăl său Peter a fost şi el jucător de snooker, ajungând până în sferturile de finală la CM 1950.

Tex wins it

Unbelievable. Major League Baseball goes the extra step to provide left and right field umpires for playoff games, and then one goes and makes the most blatant blown call in the history of the game, in extra innings too. In case you missed it, Phil Cuzzi botched a Joe Mauer double to start the top of the 11th in tonight’s Minnesota-New York game, costing the Twins a run before Mark Texeira ended it in the bottom with a homer. Mauer’s slicing fly ball glanced off Melky Cabrera’s glove and landed at least three feet fair, all with Cuzzi standing about 10 feet away. Nice call, pretty boy.

Anyway, excuses excuses. The Twins still managed to load the bases with none out in the inning before a pair of washouts — Delmon Young and Carlos Gomez — wasted at-bats with first pitch infield outs. David Robertson was then able to get Brendan Harris to fly out and end the inning to set up Texeira’s blast.

Prior to Tex’s heroics, Alex Rodriguez did his part to suggest he’s finally getting the hang of this playoff thing. A-Rod singled home the Yankees’ first run in the sixth and hit a two-run homer off Joe Nathan in the ninth to send the game to extras. New York also had a chance to put it away in the 10th, but Brett Gardner was caught way off third and doubled up on Johnny Damon’s one-out liner to short.

Anyway, a mind-blowing loss for any Yankee hater such as myself. The win gives them a 2-0 series lead heading back to the Metrodome, where Little Andrew Pettitte (14-8, 4.16) and former Yankee legend Carl “Buttocks” Pavano (14-12, 5.10) hook up Sunday.
