During the whole Thursday October 29, 2009 broadcast, Howard Stern and staff tried to refer to Chaz Bono (the son/daughter of Cher) as him or he. During Robin Quiver’s news at the end of the show, Artie Lange and Howard Stern couldn’t take it anymore and refused to call Chaz a he. Artie Lange and Howard Stern can’t stop laughing during the entire news. Howard pitches the idea of a movie where Artie Lange will teach Chaz Bono to become a real man. I have come to realize that my girlfriend cannot take criticism in any form; much like Robin Quivers from the Howard Stern Show. I knew she was insane at the beginning of September, but tonight she really reinforced the perception.

In recent months I have grown more and more lazy; I admit this. Instead of getting the money order to pay rent and dropping it off myself, I ask my girlfriend to drop it off. It seemed to be an easy enough task, but for Labor Day our property manager and her husband went on vacation and left a sign dead-center on their door. The sign said: “This office is closed September 5 – September 15″ (it was in CAPS lock but that’s annoying; also, it was the 4th and the sign went up on the 3rd (I asked)). There was a lot of writing on the sign, I’ll admit it; but in bold it said: “Pay rent at this location: (address);” also in bold was a phone number for after hours rent payment. The mail slot, through which rent can be dropped, was taped close. When she told me the slot was taped closed I thought that maybe the carpets were being cleaned or someone was in the office, and the property manager didn’t want them to have access to rent payments. My girlfriend did not mention a sign.

The result was a $20-something late fee. To most this isn’t a big deal. But to me this was a big deal, and here’s why:

My girlfriend can do no wrong. Yet, everyone else on the planet is a complete retard, moron, idiot, etc., for every little thing that happens when she’s at work. You must know, my girlfriend is a waitress. No one complains like servers; it’s just awful. Seven to nine months ago she told me (and I’m not making this up although my memory isn’t 100% on the wording) about some customers who walked in, didn’t see the “Please Wait to be Seated” sign, sat themselves, and how because they didn’t see the sign (due to the overwhelming nature of their stupidity), that they should actually be killed for being “so stupid.” (Really?).

Now, understand that she was only venting at the time. This happens with most of America. But that I have to endure 2 years of petty whining about people not seeing the “Please Wait to be Seated” sign and I can’t utter the weakest criticism about her failure to read a similar sign (a failure that ended in a late fee and less than flawless housing recommendation) is insane.

The outcome is that I was upset but decided not to be unreasonable. I sent a txt that simply said: because you failed to read the large sign on the door we have a late fee. She became defensive immediately. At first she said she was going to work and “didn’t have time to read every little thing.” However, she had just returned from work the first time, and was on her way to work the second time she failed to read it.

After I informed her about the late fee she wrote: fine I’ll pay the goddamn fee! Yet tonight when I asked her about it she said that because I didn’t respond with something like “OK,” she never bothered paying it. She’s right, I didn’t respond. I didn’t respond because she was freaking out about how it was my fault she can’t read a sign. After she wrote that, it was over.

So am I wrong? Am I right? Please help me out here. Do I have a right to be pissed? Has this ever happened to you or someone your know?

(For the record, this doesn’t happen to me because I’m stupid. Honestly. When I walk into an unfamiliar building I stand close to the door and search for signs that will tell me what to do or where to go. I expect buildings to have signs and whenever anything is amiss I look for an explanation. In fact, when I took the rent down for the third attempt at payment I didn’t even try the still-taped mail slot because I saw the sign, read it, and then followed the directions that were clearly printed on it. I’m weird like that; get use to it.)

The Howard Stern Show.

I first heard the show in the late 80’s when I was driving in Northern New Jersey and Philadelphia on a business trip.  I thought it was hilarious.  The banter and tension was great to listen to, and it kept me awake and focused as I plowed through my job.

I didn’t get to listen to the show again until I moved to Alaska, some twelve years later.  Again, I enjoyed it when I could.  I read Howard’s books, saw the movie, and considered myself a fan.

Luckily, after being promoted back to my home state, I found Howard on a local FM station.  I loved the show and I was an addict.  I had to turn on the radio first thing in the morning, and when vacations or weekend cliff hangers occurred I was out of sorts.

Then came satellite.

I was already a subscriber to Sirius, and I thought, this is perfect.  I’m already set up for the revolution!

Not soon after the novelty of uncensored radio began to wear off.  Now, I’d like to think the whole show is choreographed to the nth degree, but that’s just too much organization for that much chaos.  The immaturity and just plain gross content finally got me to tune to something else.  That’s when I started thinking; am I growing up or am I just getting tired of interview after interview about anyone’s and everyone’s sexual metrics, preferred sexual methods, and interjections of Howard’s self deprecations about his own short comings?  I was no longer enjoying the show. Instead, I found myself thinking; What if kids are listening-what message are they getting?  (and if you don’t think kids are listening, you’re lying to yourself).

• Artie’s heroin addiction and the way it’s portrayed on the show says, “If you’re famous enough, you can do what you want without penalty.”
• Being late for work all the time, or sleeping at work, or not showing up because of self-inflicted wounds is okay.
• It’s okay to make fun of anything, because you’re just making a joke.
• Racist, homosexual, and otherwise frowned upon “humor” is okay.
• It’s okay to say anything you want or make a statement of “fact” even if you don’t have the facts.
• Stupidity is okay.  If Sal or Richard can get on the Howard Stern Show, then why do I have to study?
• Narcissism trumps all.
• Howard invented 99.9% of all the good radio bits.

And hey, that’s just my opinion.  That’s what goes through my mind as I hear the cast take what was done last year, last month, or yesterday then rinse, lather, and repeat.

Again, this is just one person’s opinion, and the reason I’m writing this is I finally hit the wall this week when I tuned in and heard a story about an animal that truly disgusted me.  Stomach acid actually burned in my esophagus.

So, after years of listening, I’m done.  I’m just leaving the parting words of one insignificant listener–me.

Howard:
A genius in the radio business.  I truly believe that.  He DID revolutionize radio as we know it today, and there are more Howard-Stern-Wannabees than true innovators.  But for me, sustaining that level of innovation was/is impossible.  When he is talking to a guest one-on-one, and they are discussing an issue of relative importance, he excels.  It’s when he drops to the point of a pubescent male discovering that girls make him feel different for the first time that it gets old… for me.

Robin:
A truly intelligent woman who seems to have become an eccentric and checked that intelligence at the door. For someone who was once a nurse (many, many, many years ago), her comments on healthcare and medicine are misinformed, and unfortunate.  Her defensive posture when she is challenged shows an unwillingness to learn and keep up to date with actual clinical and peer reviewed data. I guess I never really understood her part in the show.  She’s not really funny on the air.  She seems to be either Howard’s confederate or the female distraction in the studio-a way to mix things up.  I think she would be an excellent host of a serious radio talk show, but I guess I’m one whose own ignorance can’t allow me to see her value on the show.

Fred:
Fred is, without a doubt, the smartest person on in the studio.  Fred could and should have his own political talk show.  When he talks, his arguments are well thought out, his facts are on target, and he doesn’t filibuster. I would love to hear Fred interview the newsmakers of the day–the politicos who think their status and rank in the Washington world keep them immune from the rest of the world. I have nothing negative to say about Fred.  He’s a talented musician, speaks when he needs to, and he’s the “proofreader” for the show when all the other talking heads bust in with uniformed comments and misinformation.

Gary:
Gary is someone who must love the sound of his own voice.  It seems that when he’s asked a question, he prefers to get on air before he finds the answer to whatever he’s asked.  Gary, here’s a tip; take a deep breath, find the answer, verify the answer, take another deep breath, speak clearly and slowly, and go away.

Artie:
I don’t get his appeal. Never have… ever since that movie you did with Spade and your Mad TV days.   I hope he can beat his demons before they drag him down.

Sal and Richard:
Listener’s who got on the show and harass people on the phone and perform homosexual acts on air.  That’s about it, right?  Oh, wait–at least Richard is an accomplished musician.

I’ll just rely on the memories of  the old days when I laughed instead of cringed.
