Thanksgiving at the Theisen’s was pretty fun. My only complaint was that they didn’t have a big table so half of us, the kids, had to sit at a different table. That was pretty lame, but we infiltrated later on and chatted together. I love talking with the adults. Whenever I was at my parents parties as a kid I would avoid the kids my age and listen to my parents and their family friends talk about insurance and building and jobs and stuff. It was way more interesting to me and if I had something to say I could speak up, and feel important. I loved listening to their stories, and I’m pretty sure it’s because my parents don’t talk about the past much.

Later that night I came home and laid around downstairs and watched some late night television. Apparently Robin Williams and John Travolta got drunk together like 30 years ago and crashed a black wedding. Robin commented that that would make a hilarious movie in and of itself. Then I got in contact with Shannon after her thanksgiving stuff was over. We planned to meet up and go morning shopping. I picked her up and we got to Old Navy by 3am. We looked around and didn’t find anything we wanted, so we left and decided to go to her house and nap until the Magic Carpet sale, which was the only one I really wanted to go to, at 8am. We got to sleep around 4:30 and I woke up and tried to convince Shan to go shopping, but she just wanted to sleep. We ended up sleeping in and watching tv. It was pretty fun anyways, I suppose.

After “dinner” I went up to the U to meet up with Morgan, Jeremiah, and Carl to go to the game night again and play some Left 4 Dead. Everything was locked up, so we went over to Morgan’s and played video games there. After a bit everyone decided to play magic. Morgan and I refuse to play every time, so we went to go play Left 4 Dead on his computer and switch off. It was pretty awesome. I came home and was going to return my movies, but I guess Mom did it for me. I think we’re cooking our own turkey sometime this weekend. That should be interesting. Time for me to sleep. I have a lot of writing to catch up on tomorrow!

Being writers, and fond of other writers, my associates and I intended to go see The Road today, only to find out that it is unavailable in our metropolitan area. This confused us, and filled us with rage, which magnified significantly when it was revealed why its failed appearance in our local movie theaters this week. Apparently, a week-old vampire-werewolf debacle, which doesn’t feature good actors, like these, is the culprit. Supposedly, theaters are doing so well on the teenage fantasy that they’re not importing Oscar-caliber features to stink-up their sales.

No, Cormac McCarthy’s modern classic of the same name is not your feel-good romp through suppressed hormones and vampiric betrayal that Twilight probably is, but damn it, how am I supposed to learn how to survive the fall of civilization without seeing this movie in theaters? By the time it comes out on DVD, it might be too late. We already barely bit the bullet when the LHC was fired up this week, how can they deny Las Vegas’ need for survival?

Frankly, I don’t think the government cares about this town, by allowing such a travesty to occur in an American city. This is worse than the breadlines in communist Russia. You mean I’m going to have to settle for Old Dogs (Starring Robin Williams, John Travolta, and everyone’s favorite, Seth Green)? Or this nonsense?

Actually, my esteemed colleague informs me that the movie is in limited release this weekend, and that it will open to a broader audience next week. Despite my display of internet rage now having been proven to be entirely inappropriate, I must admit I’m still somewhat miffed. This film has been delayed for over a year now, and this half-hearted release is actually disappointing. Jeez guys, you’re already pushing the envelope on getting it out there before the Oscars – make with the andale and get this sucker out there, no?

After a full meal of turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, I plopped myself down in the space rocket-type chairs at the Union Square Regal theater to see the new Disney movie Old Dogs.

After watching the trailer for the movie, it seemed like it should be a must see family movie this holiday season. Now don’t get me wrong, if you have younger kids or are looking for a cheap, cheezy laugh, definitely go and check this film out.

From the beginning of this film I felt rushed as a viewer. There were frantic cuts everywhere, and it seemed like they were either trying to make up for a lack of good shots or were trying to speed through ALL of the beginning dialogue. This got better throughout the film, but even at the end there were some scenes that felt like they were being rushed through.

The plot didn’t see to flow very well. There were some awkward transitions and some really weird jump cuts that, if I had edited the film, I definitely would not have added.

The acting again felt a bit rushed, it wasn’t the normal comedic experience you expect from Robin Williams, but there were some moments where Mrs. Doubtfire truly showed through that made me laugh. John Travolta’s comedy seemed forced, but some of his scenes you can’t help but crack up at. As for Seth Green, I was surprised at how little he was actually in the film. He had maybe 5 scenes, but that might be pushing it.

I’d like to take this part of the review and dedicate it to Bernie Mac. He did an exeptional job in this film and I already truly miss his presence on the big screen. He was a fantastic actor and he has, and will continue to be greatly missed.

Overall this filmed seemed to be a bit rushed and forced, but I would be lying if I said it didn’t make me laugh. If you are looking for a film to make you chuckle, I would recommend this. The man behind me did shy away from blurting out that he had not laughed that hard in a long time. So if you don’t think you will be annoyed by the jumpy editing, or the mediocre acting, go see this film over the holidays.

The new Old Dogs movie makes me want to cry. Not because I was expecting the movie to be good. In fact, I know it’s bad because it’s one of those movies that Disney pumps out the importance of family and blah blah. It’s made by the same guy who made Wild Hogs. The storyline is wierd for a family movie (The premise is that the main character learns about kids from a drunken romp– seven years later. There’s a lot wrong with that sentence). John Travolta hasn’t been in anything good lately. I guess Seth Green and Justin Long are there to make a quick buck.

But– Robins Williams? What happened?! Is this his first step in to the comedian graveyard that are family movies?

It may not look like it now, but the man has (or has had) a great career. His breakout role was probably Good Morning, Vietnam. He’s done drama well, see Dead Poet’s Society and The Fisher King. I remember liking Miss Doubtfire and The Birdcage was a decent remake. He’s done suspense/horror with Insomnia and One Hour Photo, which I haven’t seen, but MetaCritic and Rotten Tomatoes have both scored pretty high. Death to Smoochy was a great dark comedy.

Oh, yeah there’s also that animated movie. You know that Disney movie– um, Aladdin. And who was he again? Um, the merchant and–oh yeah– The Genie! This is the role that most people of my generation recognize him for. Unbeknownst to us though, is that his voice acting in the move was basically a mildly watered down version of his stand-up routines. Things that I didn’t get until I got into college.

Robin Williams is defined by his rapid fire delivery, but behind that quasi-gimmick is the wealth of knowledge of culture and pop culture. Sure he’s limited to impressions in the movie, but one just need to see his episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio to see his range when not limited.

Amazing improv. A-may-zing. I’ve done some improv in high school, but this is mastery.

But, he’s getting old. And when you get old, the movie companies don’t give you the good roles as much. So you take what you can get at times, so you can do the movies you want another time. Samuel L. Jackson does this all the time. (Meryl Streep doesn’t really do this, she just in everything all the time because she’s Meryl Streep. Same with George Clooney.) So you do the family movie. They sell, because they’re disposable. They go down as quickly as the snack food you’re eating as you watch them.

But not everyone goes back to the indie-movies or the “I’m gonna try something different.” See Steve Martin and the god-awful Pink Panther movies. Steve Martin’s old Saturday Night LIve stuff was good. Born Standing Up, his autobiography, is actually somewhat insightful. Which is why the movies piss me off, because Steve Martin is more than some random SNL star looking to hit the big screen. I would bring up Bob Saget, but who really cares about him?

But, as I’m writing this I remembered the dark comedy World’s Greatest Dad and maybe there’s still hope. Let’s just hope that one of the quotes from his guest appearance on Whose Lines is it Anyway? doesn’t become too ironic.

“I have a career. What the hell am I doing?”

Yeah, you should have asked yourself when you walked on set for this movie.

There are new people “outed” everyday in the world of celebrities as gamers. The most famous in the gaming community is probably Ice-T, an avid CoD fan. Others, like pro wrestler Cody Rhodes, have the triforce emblazoned on their wrestling boots and only those who know what the symbol are will understand. Then you have people you’d never think were into gaming, like Robin Williams, who’s apparently a huge Zelda fan. So much so, that he named his daughter after the iconic character.

I never heard this before, but apparently that was talked about on his latest appearance of the Jimmy Fallon show. They talked about a number of different topics relating to gaming including trash talking and the world of online gaming.

Everyonce in a while an intriguing piece of information crosses your desk and you just have to share. This was one of those times.

Ganhei a noite.

obs. Dormi no ponto.

John Travolta and Robin Williams team up in the Walt Disney Company’s Old Dogs, a family comedy that pairs the two as close business partners whose lives are thrown into disarray when twin seven-year-olds are put into their care. Travolta’s wife, Kelly Preston, co-stars, along with the couple’s daughter, Ella, who makes her big-screen debut here. Wild Hogs helmer Walter Becker directs a script by Evolution scribes David Diamond and David Weissman, with producing duties going to Andrew Panay, Peter Abrams, and Robert Levy.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! If you’re heading to the movie theater this weekend, why don’t you check out something good, like Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Or if you want to watch something horrible, how about Old Dogs?

Now to be fair, I haven’t SEEN Old Dogs, but I have seen the trailer and commercials… many, many times. About 1000 times too many. And I just have to say, “That’s NOT for me!” A movie where poor Seth Green is held capture by a gorilla, while Robin Williams and John Travolta get attacked by killer penguins? What’s not to like?

And the director of this film ALSO directed Wild Hogs? Wild Hogs AND Old Dogs, AND they both star John Travolta, but they’re not sequels? What a missed opportunity!

Comedian Paul Scheer compiled a list of the best lines from the bad reviews of this film and posted it on Twitter a few days ago. It’s hilarious. You can check it out here.

And finally, if you truly want to watch some good films starring these same guys, how about Pulp Fiction, Dead Poets Society, and … umm, Austin Powers (Seth Green’s best film role.. I guess).

E a lista continua!

Fiquem a vontade! E bons filmes!!!

“We are family….” The Birdcage is a remake of the French classic, LA CAGE AUX FOLL

“We are family….”

The Birdcage is a remake of the French classic, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, and hopefully will be become a comedy classic all its own. Armand and Albert are a gay couple running a night club in Miami, and Armand finds out his son is getting married. It just so happens he is getting married to an ultra-conservative Senator’s daughter. The Senator is in search of some good PR as his political companion was found dead with a minor prostitute. A wholesome family wedding seems to be the Senators answer for the media, and Val, the straight son, is worried about the Senator meeting his gay parents. Hence the attempt at a transformation to be a straight couple, complete with redecorating their home and changing the way they act…and finally the dinner with the parents.

I have heard a few complaints that all the characters are stereotypical and over the top. Yes, they are. But this film works for that very reason. It is not a film that is begging to be taken to seriously. Even though over the top, the characters are well-developed and likable. Robin Williams (Best supporting Actor Good Will Hunting, The Night Listener, One Hour Photo) give s a spot on performance as Armand and Nathan Lane (The Lion King, Nicholas Nickleby) is perfect as Armand’s mate and star of the Birdcage nightly drag queen show, Starina! Gene Hackman (Best Actor The French Connection, Unforgiven) is a nice casting choice for the conservative senator. The final scene with Gene Hackman dressed in drag and attempting to sing We Are Family, is worth the price of a ticket, or a rental in this case. Ok, since we are talking about performances, by the show stealer is Hank Azaria (Run Fatboy Run, Along Came Polly) who plays the very feminine butler Agador. He nails his performance right on the head. If he is in the scene, he is stealing it! Just a wonderfully funny performance!

Overall, I would highly recommend this film. It has many laugh out loud moments and truly priceless scenes. Mike Nichols (Charlie Wilson’s War, Closer) does a wonderful job of directing this talented cast and keeps this a very colorful and bright film. Visually and emotionally. If you haven’t seen it, do so! As for me, I’ll watch it again, probably for the 15th time.

It’s quiet here. Which I’m grateful for. Thanksgiving Eve, and I’m just waiting for all the work bombs to drop before I can actually leave the office and get ready for some gluttony over Thanksgiving.

So while I’m riding out this work day, I thought I would share with you some links for your enjoyment (maybe) in case you are in a situation similar to mine (which is bored and/or at work and/or not feeling like doing any actual work):

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. The same thing can be said for this new comedy. In the

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. The same thing can be said for this new comedy.

In the new comedy from Wild Hogs director Walt Becker, John Travolta teams with Robin Williams as two advertising agents who find themselves on the fine line between being a grandparent and being middle aged.

Robin’s life changes when his ex-wife (Kelly Preston), whom he married in a shotgun wedding years earlier, drops a bomb on him.

She claims her kids are his and she is going to jail for two months on a protest charge and needs someone to look after them.

This complicated plot turns into a version of My Two Dads or The Game Plan with toilet humor and some very silly antics.

The movie had some gut splitting jokes but all of them were in the trailer. The gorilla scenario, the mixed up meds, Justin Long’s psychotic camp guy and Matt Dillon’s butch scoutmaster are all really funny!

I like slapstick humor as much as the next guy. Heck, my favorite comedy of all time is Airplane! But these jokes felt really, really forced.

When they wrote this film I think they wrote the jokes first and filled in the plot to incorporate the jokes. There are just some of the craziest inconsistencies and ill-conceived plot jumps I have ever seen in a movie.

I took my parents to the advance screening of this movie and they laughed hysterically throughout. Maybe this movie is a generational thing but I just didn’t find it very funny.

1.5 out of 5

So Says the Soothsayer.

I’m going to keep this short this week because it’s Thanksgiving and I’m off relax

I’m going to keep this short this week because it’s Thanksgiving and I’m off relaxing and eating.

I like the title of this film. Ninja Assassin. Two things that are really cool. I”m not sure that it will be really good, but I do think it will be really entertaining. Benny has been drooling over this one for a while now. I’m sure we will see it this weekend. Hopefully at Alamo Drafthouse with a pitcher of Shiner. I think that’s how you should go see a film about bad-ass-ass-kicking.

WHY? Why was this film made? And who exactly is its target audience? Normally for stupid Robin Williams films I would say my parents. They went and saw and liked Wild Hogs, but this film looks even worse. There are hitting-people-in-the-nuts jokes, a weird Seth Green-being-cradled-by-an-ape, and other odd humor that usually doesn’t appeal to the 40-50 something audience. Are they expecting the teenage boys who tend to like this type of humor to go see this film? ‘Cause they’ll be at Ninja Assassin. I think this film missed it’s audience and looks terrible and not funny and Robin Williams should be banned from any type of performing now. Probably John Travolta should as well.

I love Disney films. I don’t think they are as good in overall quality as Pixar films, but I like the fantasy. It is about time we had a black princess. It’s ridiculous that little black girls have only been able to buy and play with mostly white princess’. Every little girl wants to imagine herself as a princess and I imagine it’s really hard when they don’t look anything like you. Disney has given us a Native American princess, a Chinese princess and an Arabian princess, and I dig that, but why is black last? What was the fear? That the film wouldn’t sell to the larger audience? I suppose that’s a possibility. I guess we’ll see.

I’m not sure this will be Disney’s greatest achievement. The story doesn’t sound compelling to me. I hope I’m wrong. I want to be swept up in the fantasy and feel myself long to be that girl, like when I watch The Little Mermaid. It doesn’t seem likely, though, does it? I really hope this isn’t a disappointing film. I really want it to be good. I know Disney contacted people like Oprah to get opinions on the story and character and that was probably a good idea. I like that it’s hand drawn, which is Disney’s niche. So, please, please, let it be good. For all the little black princess’ out there.

Intense. Frightening. Depressing. Maybe heartwarming at times. Then bittersweet at the end. That’s what I think this film will be. And I’m guessing it will be too heavy for me, but if you like that sort of thing, it’s going to be a much more realistic vision of the apocalypse then 2012 was for sure.
