Cockaine by Jeremy MF Thompson I‘m still in the first room, room 139, and on the wall is a framed ph

Cockaine by Jeremy MF Thompson

I‘m still in the first room, room 139, and on the wall is a framed photograph. In the photo there is a leave-it-to-beaver looking male – gazing up as if viewing a legion of angels! And in front of this awe struck face – a large penis with a neat white line on the top just begging to be snorted. This was one of the few Jeremy MF Thompson photographs on display at the Dirty Show.

Thompson remarked on some reactions to this piece during the Dirty Show and how this photo originated for him:

“When I walked into room 139, I saw two dudes staring at my ‘Cockcaine’ piece. One looked at the other and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to do that.’ I wanted to tell them, ‘ME TOO! ME TOO! That’s why I took the picture!’… but I didn’t. I like being a fly on the wall in group shows.

The idea for that picture came from seeing RoboCop when I was a little kid. There’s a scene where one of the villains is snorting coke off some hooker’s tits and I can clearly remember thinking, ‘I don’t know what that is but I want to do that!’ Years later, thanks to San Francisco, I found out exactly what that mysterious white powder was and why the idea of doing it off of someone was so appealing. I wanted someone to suck up some coke off of my own cock but getting that photo would be pretty difficult so I got myself a stud with a stunt cock. Originally I wanted two dicks, mushroom to mushroom, with a guy sucking cock off of one and a girl (my fiancée) snorting coke off the other but I decided one cock and one user would be dirtier. Choosing a male to do the line just seemed right at the time.”

Thompson’s art takes on a Let’s-not-take-anything-too-serious-folks attitude, and he says, “There’s not much to take seriously when it comes to sex or art except, of course, in the execution, and even then if it’s not fun it’s not worth doing.”

As for “Cockaine” the photograph that graced the wall of room 139 at the Dirty Show Motel – it sold – and will grace the wall of another. However, I am hoping to see more of his work at the Dirty Show 11 in Detroit. Until then – here are a few more Jeremy MF Thompson photographs. Enjoy!

Basil Poledouris 21st August 1945 – 8th November 2006

After recently discovering what exactly the “genius” function was on my iPod nano I noticed something odd. Not only did it group my music by genre, album and artist but also by composer. Settling back on the train listing to a few classic movie themes I was surprised to discover my choices jumping from Conan the Barbarian, to Les Miserables and then back to Robocop.

After further investigation, or “Google” I think it’s more commonly known as, I discovered the wonderful composer of classic (and varied) movie themes, Basil Poledouris, an American music composer who wrote many memorable scores for movies and television shows.

Possibly not up there in the fame category with the likes of John Williams and Danny Elfman but never the less the man is a legend. It certainly inspired me to look a little further and to expand my knowledge of where our classic movie themes come from. Some of his most recognisable contributions to movie scores are Conan the Barbarian (1982), Conan the Destroyer (1984), Robocop (1987), with some of his final work (sadly Basil passed away in 2006) includes The Touch (2002) and The Legend of Butch and Sundance (2004).

With a career spanning 4 decades Basil worked in many different styles, mediums and genres. Other popular movies Basil Poledouris composed include Starship Troopers, Lassie and Hot Shots Part Deux! It is a revealing and certainly an eclectic mix but, as with John Williams, I can now recognise that “shiver down the spine” familiarity of the score, the key signature of any great composer.

Some of his greatest scores have been compiled in this awesome YouTube video, for a taster visit Basil Poledouris – Greatest Hits.

Well. “24″ week continues with a (hopefully) quick look at some of “24’s

Well.

“24″ week continues with a (hopefully) quick look at some of “24’s” Greatest Villains.

Again, spoilers lie ahead…be weary, fair traveller.

Seven: Jonas Hodges, Season 7, Redemption. (Jon Voight.)

Angelina Jolie’s biological father was born to be a “24″ villain. And the man did not disappoint. Chewing the scenery with gleeful abandon every step of the way, Jon Voight proved to be a formidable opponent for Jack Bauer – and whoever else got in his way along the way. Hodges fast became one of my favorite Big Bads in the entire series, and I had high hopes on his returning in the future to antagonize Jack over and over again. Sadly, it turned out that he actually wasn’t the dude in charge, and was just another pawn in an increasingly ridiculous operation, and he exited the series…well, kind of lamely.

Too bad…he coulda ranked a helluva lot higher! Still a fun ride while it lasted, though.

Six: Habib Marwan, Season Four. (Arnold Vosloo.)

In Season Four, Jack Bauer was menaced by the Mummy. That’s right, the Mummy.

I kid you not.

Okay, so it was just the dude who played the mummy in those horrible Brendan Frasor films, but still.

The Mummy.

I have nothing else to add here.

Five: Christopher Henderson, Season Five. (Peter Weller.)

So we had the Mummy terrorizing Los Angeles in Season Four – that’s a tough act to follow. But the producers were more than up to the challenge.

They brought in RoboCop.

Christopher Henderson was once Jack’s mentor, and that’s cool – he’s basically an older, grizzleder, meaner Jack Bauer. The perfect nemesis, in other word. Not only can he predict Jack’s methods, but Jack can predict that he can predict his methods, so he realizes that his normal methods are all but useless – forcing him to find new methods, which I guess means Henderson didn’t really predict anything at all.

Still pretty badass, though.

Four: Tony Almeida, Season Seven. (Carlos Bernard.)

If Christopher Henderson is Jack in twenty years, than Tony Almeida is Jack now – which is far more lethal. Add to that the emotional element of discovering that your best friend, partner, and really the “only man you can trust” is now your adversary, and we have the makings of the ultimate “24″ villain. Or so I thought.

The writers didn’t seem to want to commit to Tony one way or the other – they wanted him to be the bad guy but didn’t seem to want him to be, you know, evil. Key element there.

So instead we got a mostly bad Tony, but a Tony who was bad for the right reasons. It turned him into a more tragic figure than an outright villain, and while I enjoyed the more complex journey he ended up taking, part of me still really wanted to see some hardcore Bauer vs. Almeida action.

Oh well…at least they didn’t kill him off this time.

Three: Mandy, Season One, Two and Four. (Mia Kirshner.)

Here’s a character that needs to return, like yesterday. While appearing in three separate seasons, Mandy has only appeared in seven episodes. Yet she still clocks in at Number Three.

That’s pretty incredible.

Mysterious, deadly, and, let’s face it, hot, Mandy has been a thorn in Jack’s side long before the two even came face-to-face. She always seems to appear at the worst possible moment, shocking the viewer and messing things up for Bauer and Co. even more. Whether she’s leaping out of exploding planes or poisoning presidents with a simple handshake, she’s generally pretty awesome. She’s still alive as well, which is a rarity for “24″ characters, let alone villains, and hasn’t shown up since Season Four.

I’d say her unique brand of havoc is long overdue.

Two: Nina Meyers, Season One, Two and Three. (Sarah Clarke.)

Of all the enemies on this list, I think it’s safe to say that Nina Meyers has had the most impact on Jack. She was kind of his arch-nemesis over the course of the first three seasons, and a seemingly unstoppable one at that. She started off as Jack’s most trusted ally and friend, and ended the day by killing his wife, Teri.

Jack was never a very good judge of character.

Nina would return in Season Two and Season Three to once again tangle with Bauer, and haunt him about his wife’s death. I’ve always said that a really solid, returning antagonist would really up the ante of the shows threat level, and Nina was perfect in the role.

And then, in the third season, Jack shot her like sixty times.

One: President Charles Logan, Season Five. (Gregory Itzin.)

When it was revealed midway through Season Five that it was the President who had been behind the events of that day, no one even questioned it. It was unexpected, it was terrifying, it…didn’t make a whole lot of sense. But we bought it. Without question. Because the writing was quality, but more importantly: because Greg Itzin, who had played Logan since his introduction in Season One, was just that good.

Logan’s characteristic bumbling and poor decision making skills had been an act – and we believed it because of Itzin’s performance. He (and Jean Smart, who played his wife Martha) were unbelievable that season, treading the fine line between duplicity and outright lying to your audience. They had great chemistry; and they both knew their characters inside and out.

But never mind the acting…the mere thought of the president, the most powerful man in the world being a terrorist was just too delicious for the writers of the show to pass up. Even if Logan’s turn to the dark side hadn’t been telegraphed from the very beginning (they say it was, but I think they’re lying) it was an intriguing premise – one that led to one of the best seasons of the show, and undoubtably, the show’s best villain.

so some of you are aware of what happened and where I’ve been over the past 3 months. this experience has been very life changing. 4 months ago I would be baked right now and waking up in a skanks house as usual, getting ready for a day of pot, pills, and/or alcohol. I really let myself become a piece of trash over the summer. everyone I hung out with lived a life of ignorance. I’m not sure where I would be right now if I continued to participate in all of that.

the reason I bring this up and choose to document it and share it is because this morning I got a text from a friend welcoming me home and wanting to hang out. I didn’t give it much thought and agreed until I received a response inquiring if I knew where to “get anything” and then I realized how sad my previous situation was because I sent many texts like that and spent much money on it. I kindly replied that I am not interested in anything of the sorts and I would just talk to him later. I don’t plan on communicating with him anytime in the near future, but I do plan on praying for him and everyone else that I’m aware of that is still living that lifestyle.

now before you say, “did he say pray for them? oh man.. Justin has became one of those crazy Jesus freaks and is gonna be all weird now” let me please clarify that I’ve been an ordained minister since September of 2002 and have studied the bible greatly previous to my little experience, but I chose to turn away because it was all very inconvenient to me. I’m still who I was, just minus the drugs and vodka. I’m still Marilyn Manson’s biggest fan (we’ll deal with all of that later) and I haven’t fully quit smoking cigarettes yet. (although it has been 4 days without one as of today and there’s a pack sitting right there. RIGHT THERE! next to my RoboCop action figure)

but I must admit, there may be times when I may encourage some of you to take a gander at Jesus and his adventures! there’s a whole book about his adventures! well, it’s really half a book. his adventures don’t start tile a bit past halfway through it. anyways.. I do it all out of love for my friends. this experience has only help me get my faith back to the way it used to be and even stronger now if I may admit.

now if you will excuse me, I have cold chicken in the fridge that needs to be in my mouth. later.

[P.S. – props to Jeff Andrews, you play a big part of this]

Never say never again, fick regiuppdraget.

Sometimes, things are better off left alone

I’m dubious about remakes. I don’t agree with remakes WHATSOEVER.

However, having heard Daft Punk’s new Tron Legacy theme I must admit I am now pretty excited about what they’re going to do with the soundtrack. If you’ve not heard it yet, you’re in for a treat, it’s wicked! This John Roman remix is a bit ambitious, the guy’s got hold of this track snippet and bled 4 minutes out of it. Still, credit where credit’s due, he’s a 20 year old bedroom producer from Toronto and the track’s pretty good!

Daft Punk – Tron Legacy Theme

Another remake that simply shouldn’t be happenning is the new Robocop film. Things are very hush hush at the moment as the film is still in development (release slated for 2011) but my source in Hollywood sent me this image of a stunt man getting to grips with the new Robocop costume. Looks shit.

Dy’all remember Friction’s track Robocop? Be reminded! You have 30 seconds to comply!

DJ Friction – Robocop

Robocop game theme from the Spectrum

And finally we come to the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street. Is there need for me to say again that I think it’s the cinematic equivalent of spitting on your own mother’s grave? Or that in my opinion fucks like Michael Bay must be stopped before everything that was good about the 80s is plundered to the point that the entire decade becomes little more than a stinking carcass in the desert of history? Oh yes.

Now, listen to this slice of proggy filth – Dreamweaver by Gary Wright. The song that inspired the character of Freddy Kreuger and was sampled to make the theme.

Ever since the robot was first invented, there have been people who swear up and down that they mark

Ever since the robot was first invented, there have been people who swear up and down that they mark the first step towards the fall of man. They claim that if we ever manage to perfect the art of creating a synthetic humanoid with the right combination of emotion, mobility, and free will that it’s only a matter of time until it develops self awareness, realizes it’s potential as the superior being, and proceeds to enslave the world. To be fair, their arguments are backed with scientific fact taken from documentary films such as The Terminator, The Matrix, and RoboCop.

I try not to stress about things outside of my control. My suggestion would be to focus on the present and worry about the robots we have in our lives now rather than the ones who may eventually hunger for the destruction of the human race.

More and more we see new devices introduced into our society and households that automate some of life’s simpler functions. You may be familiar with the Roomba, a small disc-shaped robot that will vacuum your floors at a designated time and then return itself to it’s charging station. In the eyes of the robot naysayer, the Roomba would also prove useful in sneaking up onto the owner’s face in the middle of the night to vacuum the final breaths from their lungs. There’s another up and coming robot called the Automower, which is a four wheeled device that will mow your lawn without the need for human steering. Anti-robot activists are quick to point out that pairing a rather unintelligent robot with a lawnmower blade is a guaranteed way to have your body chopped off. You may have heard about the Japanese companion robot designed for the elderly called Wakamaru, which can for the most part, understand human speech and will even call 911 in the case of emergency. Robotophobes will remind us of that one isolated incident during the beta testing process where a Wakamaru laughed and mocked it’s elderly owner as they lay seizuring on the floor.

The aforementioned robots are highly advanced and are pushing the technological envelope but are not readily available to just anyone. Personally, I would worry more about the robots we deal with on a fairly regular basis. There’s one in particular that I think we should keep a careful eye on because you never know when it will turn on you. Of course, I’m talking about the cheeky British robot that lives inside my GPS device.

Global positioning systems are becoming a regular staple in vehicles across America, and nine out of ten cellular phones have them built right in. A few weeks ago while driving into unfamiliar territory, I missed a turn that she was very adamant I take. She had no qualms about letting me know that she was burdened by the task of recalculating my directions and as I repeatedly missed the intersection the more serious her robotic tone became. I was starting to worry that before long she would be feeding me directions that would cause me to unintentionally drive into a nearby lake, or worse, I had visions of the GPS unit turning itself off completely, but not before spouting a final comment of “Now arriving in the bad part of town.”

As my cohort Hostile Hawk has stated, Detroit Sucks! Detroit Sucks! Detroit Sucks! Yes we have an anti-Detroit bias on this site, and to all you people living in Detroit, you suck too. So with the anti-Detroit sentiment at an all time high here at Puck Powwow, I bring you perhaps my favorite picture of all time. Enjoy.

In other news we are going to be missing Eager and Bolland tonight, but even without their presence, I think the boys are going to pull through. Look for a hard charging, hard hitting game, and hopefully no octopi. I mean seriously who throws Octopus on the ice, that makes as much sense as Robocop being from Detroit. (In all seriousness, Robocop is the one thing from Detroit that does not suck.) Look for strong netminding hopefully from Niemi (my fingers are crossed, that my brain decides to not play the human siv Huet.) and for our guys to exact some revenge for last spring.
