La Session soirée, proposée cette année par les organisateurs du Masters Paris-Bercy, proposait, hier soir, deux huitièmes assez équilibrées. Tout d’abord le choc des styles entre Tommy Robredo et Rafael Nadal, puis le choc des cogneurs ou “bourrins” qui opposait Fernando Gonzalez à Juan Martin Del Potro. Des issues faciles à deviner et pourtant ça n’a pas été facile.

C’est sous les notes de “Thriller” du défin Michael Jackson que Rafael Nadal et son compatriote, Tommy Robredo entrait sur le central du POPB en début de soirée. Favoris, le Majorquin débutait mieux son match qu’au tour précédent contre Verdasco. Robredo s’accrochait mais ne pouvait empêcher le numéro 2 mondial de s’échapper. Le premier set en poche, Rafael Nadal pensait finir rapidement. Mais c’était sans compter sur son adversaire, Tommy Robredo. Plus à l’aise sur terre battue, le Catalan jouait parfaitement son rôle pour gêner au maximum son compatriote. Très propre sur ses jeux de services, son deuxième set était un niveau au dessus. En face, Nadal lachait peu à peu le match. Le break réussit, à 2-2 dans le deuxième set, permettait le retour de Robredo dans le match et lui adjugeait la seconde manche. Très convainquant sur les situations dangereuses, Nadal attaquait la troisième manche avec une présence constante. Ses coups puissants retrouvés, l’Espagnole faisait la course en tête. Puis venait le break du Catalan qui servait alors, à 5-4, pour un place en quarts de finale. C’est le moment que choisissait le numéro 2 mondial pour retrouver son efficacité et arracher la victoire. Un salut et un remerciement au public, chaud bouillant, tandis que Tommy, lui, quittait le terrain en se demandant comment il avait pu louper sa chance. Plus au top depuis sa blessure, Rafael Nadal reste quand même difficile à battre, comme disaient certains “Un lion ne meurt jamais, il dort”…

La deuxième partie de soirée réservait un match de cogneurs, à 210km/h de moyenne au service. Le Chilien, Fernando Gonzalez, avait rendez-vous avec son voisin géographique, l’Argentin, Juan Martin Del Potro. Bourrins au sevice comme dans leurs coups, les deux joueurs géraient leur premier jeux de service avec aisance et rapidité. Un rytme bien différent de celui du premier match. Del Potro arrivait cependant à prendre le service de son adversaire et s’offrait une avance convenable pour choper le premier set. Mais trop facile dans son comportement, l’Argentin était surpris par son adversaire qui ne lâchait rien. Les deux joueurs se retrouvaient au tie break où le petit écart de niveau de jeu  entre eux se faisait ressentir. Finalement, Gonzalez arrachait la première manche et faisait appel, dans la foulée, au médecin. Le Chilien se plaignait d’une douleur au genou droit. Ne parvenant pas à lâcher l’Argentin, le 11ème joueur mondial faisait la course en tête dans le second set. Cette avantage lui permettait à 5-4, de s’offrir sept balles de matches sur le service de Del Potro. Le 5ème mondial faisait alors toute l’étale de son mental à rude épreuve. Pourtant souffrant du dos, l’Argentin emmenait son adversaire au jeu décisif, une deuxième fois, qu’il remportait cette fois 8 à 6. Le Chilien déclarait forfait lors de la pause et offrait, du même coup, un ticket pour les quarts de finale à Del Potro qui devra passer Stepanek pour continuer son parcours dans le tournoi parisien. Le Tchèque avait écarté Andy Murray, touché physiquement, plus tôt dans l’après midi. Duel de chanceux en perspective ?

Just remind me why they play Paris so late in the year again? Doesn’t really seem like anyone is interested in playing there… except Julian Bennetau. Federer suffered a terrible loss to an on-fire Bennetau in the first round. Embaressing, to say the least. Good news for Roger fans is that Muzz lost to Stepanek today in the battle of the two uglies. That side of the draw is wide open for del Potro if he decides he could do with winning a Masters, (he could, just saying).

Nadal saved multiple match points in his first round victory over Almagro, world’s biggest choker. He is currently playing in a third set against Robredo. Not really players he should be challenged by, even on the fast courts of Paris.

Back to Federer’s loss. He posted on facebook earlier in the week that he had been practising at Roland Garros. Here’s an idea. When you are about to play in a tourny on a fast hardcourt, it is a wise idea to practise on one. Hard court, at least. Not CLAY. Seriously, clay?? Why did he bother entering?

Davydenko has qualified for the WTF, and he bloody deserves it. He may have lost in Paris to Soderling, (who is still in the hunt), but he will have a real shot at the end of year finals. Especially if Nadal, Muzz, and Fed remain uninterested.

Verdasco’s end of season has been as bad as Federer’s … but he didn’t win two Slams and make all four finals this year so it baffles me why he seems to be running out of steam. If he is going to play this averagly, I  don’t want him in WTF. Give it to Soderling, who is playing well and deserves it.

Speaking of playing well, Cilic beat Verdasco today and boy is just looking better and better. He is going to be a real contender next year.

Safin retired after losing against delPo, but I’ll post on him properly later in the week. Delpo takes on Gonzy next … please win.

EDIT: Well Nadal snuck through that one 7-5 in the third… I’ll reserve further judgement.

Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo have drawn each other at the Shanghai Masters ATP event.  It will be the fifth time they have played one another head to head although they have not met one another since 2006. Blake is the favourite in this match but Robredo should be able to wear him down. If Robredo can get the 1st set then I can’t see Blake coming back to win this, at the moment it seems he isn’t 100% committed. Blake leads the H2H 4-2 (3-1 on hardcourts), but Robredo should be able to peg one back today.

Petzchner played really well against an in-form Sam Querrey and this isn’t Robredo’s fave surface. There’s just too much value in Petzchner.

A világelsőt már az első forduló előtt búcsúztatta térdsérülése

Egyelőre nem sok meglepetés született Wimbledonban. A nagy hiányzó, első kiemelt Rafael Nadal távolmaradásával egyenes út vezet Roger Federer hatodik wimbledoni győzelme felé. Ha svájci kihasználja legnagyobb ellenfele sérülését, újra a világranglista élére ugorhat. Federer meg sem izzadt az első két fodulóban: előbb három szettben simán búcsúztatta tajvani ellenfelét, majd Guillermo Garcia Lopez ellen sem fáradt el túlságosan.

James Blake és Marat Szafin már az első fordulóban búcsúzott a wimbledoni közönségtől, ám míg az előbbi csak egy évre, az orosz klasszis jövőre már biztosan nem indul, mivel év végén visszavonul. Akik továbbjutottak: Novak Djokovics, a 24. helyen kiemelt Tommy Haas, az izraeli Dudi Sela, az amerikai Mardy Fish, és Tommy Robredo is ott lesz a harmadik fordulóban (bár ez utóbbi csak maratoni, ötszettes csatában tudta legyőzni Stefan Koubeket). A brit Andy Murray kiegyensúlyozott játékát Robert Kendrick bánta az első fordulóban. De Lleyton Hewitt, David Ferrer és Gilles Simon is meccset fog játszani holnap a harmadik fordulóba jutásért.

Sarapova - most már ordíthat 150 decibellel is, akkor sem jut döntőbe.

A hölgyeknél Maria Sarapova a legnagyobb név, aki eddig kiesett. A szépséges orosz teniszezőnő továbbra is csak a leghangosabban sikító játékosok között az első (a múlt héten közölt felmérés szerint 101 decibellel is képes üvölteni egy-egy ütés után), a teniszpályán nem jön neki ki a lépés. A Williams-nővérek, Jelena Jankovics, Nadja Petrova folytathatja a rózsavizes tálért való versengést, ahogy Anna Dokics, és Daniela Hantuchová is.

A magyar játékosok közül Czink Melinda rögtön az első körben megkapta Amelie Mauresmot, akit nem tudott legyőzni (azóta párosban is kiesett), míg Szávay Ágnes számára a világranglistán 110. belga Flipkens ellen játszotta az első és az utolsó meccset is idén a Wimbledonon. A román játékosok közül Victor Hănescu és Sorana Cârstea is vette az akadályt, míg Ioana Raluca Olarunak túl nagy falatnak bizonyult Viktoria Azarenka, akivel szemben játszmát sem tudott nyerni és simán 6:0, 6:0-ra kikapott.

A következő fordulókban kiderül, Andy Murray vagy bárki más képes-e megállítani Roger Federert, és hogy a nőknél újra a Williamsek uralják majd a női mezőnyt. Jó szurkolást mindenkinek!

NEW HAVEN, Conn., June 1, 2009 – Former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Amelie Mauresmo, and two rising stars on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Dominika Cibulkova and Alize Cornet, have become the first three female players to commit to Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Schick, an Olympus US Open Series event on the ATP World Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour to be held August 21-29, 2009 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, it was announced today by Anne Worcester, tournament director. They join Americans Mardy Fish and Taylor Dent, and French Open quarterfinalist Tommy Robredo as players committed early to the event.

Mauresmo, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006, will be making her ninth trip to the Pilot Pen, the most of any player in tournament history. She has had tremendous success in New Haven reaching the quarterfinals five times (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2006), the semifinal twice (2003 and 2008) and the final (2005). Currently ranked No. 16 in the world, she has had a strong year winning her 25^th career title at Paris and reaching the semifinals at Brisbane and Madrid.

Cibulkova, who is currently ranked No. 19, will be making her third trip to New Haven. She had the best season of her career in 2008 reaching the finals of Amelia Island and Montreal, and the quarterfinals of five other events. Her best result this year is currently in progress as she has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open this week and tomorrow will face three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova. In addition, earlier this year she reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals at Ponte Vedra Beach and Charleston.

Cornet, who reached the semifinals at the Pilot Pen last year, also had a breakout season in 2008. She won the first tour-level tournament of her career at Budapest, reached the finals at Acapulco and Rome, and reached the semifinals of two other events at Amelia Island and Charleston. The Frenchwoman has played well in 2009, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of Sydney and Paris. She is currently ranked No. 21, and will be making her second appearance at New Haven.

“The Pilot Pen now has three talented female players to complement the trio of men that had already committed,” said Worcester. “Adding Amelie, a Grand Slam champion who has become a staple at the Pilot Pen every year, and two attractive rising stars who are the future of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, means that fans are sure to get terrific value for their tickets.”

Tommy Robredo vs Philipp Kohlschreiber

Oh dear. This is a massively tough match to call. I wrote in a previous post that I would put a considerable amount of money on whoever Kohlschreiber was playing due to his erratic tendencies.

Having now seen he is playing Tommy Robredo I am certainly not so confident.

This is a match the German should win in my opinion and that is precisely the reason why I am going to pick Robredo to advance to the next round.

Kohlschreiber had nothing to lose against against Djokovic and was able to play without a hint of pressure. This match will be a different kettle of fish and he will have a degree of expectation on his shoulders which could effect his play.

This match has five set thriller written all over it and I reckon Kohlschreiber will bottle it.

Federer should stroll this match against the aging Haas. I think the first set will be competitive however after that Federer will dominate.

Juan Martin Del Potro vs Jo Wilfried Tsonga

On any other surface I would have no doubt in my mind that Tsonga would have a great chance of winning.

However clay courts do not suit his gung ho type of play as we have seen from his mediocre results as of late.

Personally I am not a fan of Del Potro but he has chalked up a few good results on the surface.

Like Tsonga he is not the greatest on clay either but his comfortable win against a ‘proper dirtballer’ in Andreev the previous round makes me side with the lanky Argentine.

Gael Monfils vs Andy Roddick

Monfils should get the better of Roddick on this surface however the Frenchman always seems to make life difficult for himself.

Roddick is a fighter and now he has come this far into the draw I am sure he will have been working on a plan to disappoint the French crowd by knocking their favourite player out.

Roddick will need to serve well to keep Monfils at bay.

And if Monfils fails to get into the Roddick service games he may lose confidence and go on the defensive which would allow Roddick to start dictating points.

If this happens we could be in for a long match however Monfils will eventually scrape the win by grinding down the American.

Plus Monfils has points to defend here which is an added incentive for him.

Hass ve Federer toprak kortta ilk defa mücadele edecekler. Nadal ve Djokovic’in turnuvada elenmesinin ardından Federer için şampiyonluk şansı artmış durumda, buna ek olarak Federer bu günlerde inanılmaz formda. Haas 3. turda Fransız Chardy’i eleyerek 4. tura yükselmişti. Federer’in tüm zamanlarda Haas’a karşı 8-2 üstünlüğü var. Federer bu maçı kaybetmesi büyük bir süpriz olacaktır.

Del Potro – Tsonga
Günün maçı diyebileceğimiz bu maçta dünyanın 5 numarası Del Potro ile dünyanın 9 numarası Fransız Tsonga karşılaşacak. Tsonga’nın iyi bir toprak kort oyuncusu olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Del Potro ise son toprak kort turnuvalarında çok iyi bir performans sergiledi. Roma’da çeyrek final, Madrid’te yarı final oynayıp Düseldorf’taki World Team Championship turnuvasında iki maçını da kazandı.Bu maçta Del Potro’yu çok daha şansı görüyorum.

Robredo – Kohlschreiber
Turnuvanın 29 numaralı seribaşı olan Kohlschreiber 3. turda Djokovic’i eleyerek turnuvanın ilk süprizini gerçekleştirmişti. Bir önceki turdaki rakibi de Juan Carlos Ferrero’ydu.Kohschreiber’in rakibi Robredo ise son maçta Gonzalez’i son iki sette adeta sahadan silmişti. Karar vermekte en çok zorlandığım maçlardan biri bu ma diyebilirim. Düsseldorf’taki performansı ve Djokovic’i eleyerek kazandığı moralden dolayı Kohschreiber diyorum.

Roddick – Monfils
Monfils 2008 Roland Garros’un yarı finalisti. Roddick ise bu sene ilk defa Roland Garros’ta 4.tura çıkmayı başardı. Bir çoğunuz çok fazla Monfils’i izlememiş olabilirsiniz ancak Monfils gerçekten iyi bir yetenek. Roddick daha önce Monfils ile oynadığı 2 toprak kort maçını da kaybetti. Ev sahibi olmanın avantajını da kullanacak olan Monfils bence Roddick’i geçecektir.

Entre lo que jugaron menos que Del Potro, Fernando González saca ventaja por sólo haber jugado 4 horas y 47 minutos. Sin embargo, el chileno viene por el otro lado del cuadro. Los otros dos con menos tiempo en la cancha que el tandilense, Roddick (2°, 5 horas y 9 minutos) y Monfils (3°, 5 horas y 31 minutos), podrían ser rivales del argentino en semifinales.

WORLD NO. 14 TOMMY ROBREDO AND AMERICAN MARDY FISH COMMIT TO PILOT PEN TENNIS

Robredo will be making his third trip to New Haven this summer, with his best finish coming in 2005 when he reached the quarterfinals. The Spaniard has had a fantastic start to the 2009 campaign winning back-to-back tournaments at Costa Do Sauipe, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Agrentina, reaching the semifinals at Vina del Mar, Chile and the quarterfinals at Acapulco, Mexico. A consistent veteran of the tour, he has finished in the Top 30 of the year-end rankings for the past eight years.

Fish, who will be making his fifth trip to the Pilot Pen, has had a terrific season thus far. In February he reached the finals at San Jose and then followed that up a few weeks later by notching the third singles title of his career at Delray Beach. In addition to that singles title, this year Fish captured doubles titles at Memphis (with Mark Knowles) and Indian Wells (with Andy Roddick). Indian Wells has been good to Fish as last year he beat then World No. 1 Roger Federer to advance to the finals. It was the first time an American had beaten Federer in more than four years.
