Novye Izvestija Novye Izvestija
November 26, 2009 26 de novembro de 2009

Translated from Russian by Infowars Ireland Traduzido do russo por Infowars Irlanda

The New England Journal of Medicine publicou “o denunciante” há vários anos.

“Meu lema é: a doença não me domina.

Blog – Como surgiu a ideia do livro?

Meu lema é: a doença não me domina.

As various health bodies are still struggling to counter the swine flu pandemic, reports of a Tamiflu resistance developing in a few individuals across the world were causing concerns. Now, to add to their worries, UK has reported the first instance of confirmed cases of person-to-person transmission of a Tamiflu-resistant strain in the world.

Some other reports also listed cases of scores individuals developing the drug resistant strain but there were no reports of person-to-person transmission. Authorities reported five patients at a unit treating people with severe underlying health conditions at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff to be the first confirmed cases of this form of infection.

The current case raises alarm as winter is setting in and WHO has already warned about severe outbreak across the world. Among the five British patients two have reportedly recovered and discharged from hospital while one remains in intensive care and the remaining two are on the ward.

The doctors say that they were not unaware of such a complication given the fact that drugs and the medical complications suppress immune system of the patients. They also informed that the current strain is also not much deadlier than the strain circulating since April this year.

UK has already stocked Tamiflu to suffice the needs of at least half of it’s population. This Thursday authorities announced that more than three million healthy children under five across the UK will be offered shots. Current estimates show 53,000 new cases of swine flu in England in the last week, which was down from 64,000 in the prior week. Scotland also reported a drop of 300 patients over the last week period of 21, 500.

Genentech, the biotechnology behemoth, has been caught ghostwriting and mass marketing its ideas on

Genentech, the biotechnology behemoth, has been caught ghostwriting and mass marketing its ideas on health care reform and putting them into the mouths of a few dozen congressmen, many of whom entered the statements into the Congressional Record as their own.

The repetitiveness of the statements triggered a New York Times reporter’s investigation which found Genentech behind the voice. The reporter also found a link between congressmen making statements Genentech sent and those receiving campaign contributions from Genentech and its parent Roche; a connection Genentech denies.

When an 11-year old is caught doing something wrong, the lament is “but everyone does it;” a lobbyist affiliated with Genentech had the same response: “This happens all the time. There was nothing nefarious about it.” Some congressional staffers and lobbyists weighing in on this agreed: no big deal.

Intellectualizing here is a slippery slope: you can be pragmatic and keep trust, but in this case trust was broken. Lobbyists are great resources; advancing their companies’ agendas, they seek the sweet spot to anticipate or accommodate what an elected official needs as well as their company. But the system breaks down when the public doesn’t know whose unattributed voice comes out of the leaders’ mouths we elect. It breaks down in an orchestrated effort to enlist as many statements as humanly possible from legislators using Genentech’s words as their own. It breaks down without transparency.

This isn’t a case where the orchestration impacted a vote. But Genentech’s example is illustrative of a larger issue: a potential for an Orwellian spin on groupthink, how influence can manipulate and why the bar needs to be raised. A company’s actions may stop far short of showing “undue influence,” which is illegal. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t corrupting the channels of communication.

The story has another cautionary aspect. When U.S. Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. from New Jersey was asked by the New York Times why his statement was nearly identical to so many of his colleagues, he said he’d gotten it from his staff but he didn’t know where they’d gotten the information. “I regret the information was the same,” he said. Any elected official or CEO who doesn’t know where his or her information comes from is inviting manipulation or turning a blind eye to plagiarism. Both explanations undermine the potential for ethical leadership, and both squander trust and credibility.

One would think it is an embarrassing episode for the congressmen involved, but I don’t presume to know anymore what is capable of embarrassing a congressman. And Genentech management, are they embarrassed? Roche acquired the company earlier this year, replacing highly regarded, long-time CEO Arthur Levinson – under whose leadership Genentech regularly won top spots on the most admired, best companies to work for, and other lists – with a Roche executive. Would this have happened, one wonders, under Levinson’s tenure as CEO?

Published: November 14, 2009

New York Times

WASHINGTON — In the official record of the historic House debate on overhauling health care, the speeches of many lawmakers echo with similarities. Often, that was no accident.

Statements by more than a dozen lawmakers were ghostwritten, in whole or in part, by Washington lobbyists working for Genentech, one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies.

E-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that the lobbyists drafted one statement for Democrats and another for Republicans.

The lobbyists, employed by Genentech and by two Washington law firms, were remarkably successful in getting the statements printed in the Congressional Record under the names of different members of Congress.

Genentech, a subsidiary of the Swiss drug giant Roche, estimates that 42 House members picked up some of its talking points — 22 Republicans and 20 Democrats, an unusual bipartisan coup for lobbyists.

In an interview, Representative Bill Pascrell Jr., Democrat of New Jersey, said: “I regret that the language was the same. I did not know it was.” He said he got his statement from his staff and “did not know where they got the information from.”

Members of Congress submit statements for publication in the Congressional Record all the time, often with a decorous request to “revise and extend my remarks.” It is unusual for so many revisions and extensions to match up word for word. It is even more unusual to find clear evidence that the statements originated with lobbyists.

The e-mail messages and their attached documents indicate that the statements were based on information supplied by Genentech employees to one of its lobbyists, Matthew L. Berzok, a lawyer at Ryan, MacKinnon, Vasapoli & Berzok who is identified as the “author” of the documents. The statements were disseminated by lobbyists at a big law firm, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal.

In an e-mail message to fellow lobbyists on Nov. 5, two days before the House vote, Todd M. Weiss, senior managing director of Sonnenschein, said, “We are trying to secure as many House R’s and D’s to offer this/these statements for the record as humanly possible.”

He told the lobbyists to “conduct aggressive outreach to your contacts on the Hill to see if their bosses would offer the attached statements (or an edited version) for the record.”

In recent years, Genentech’s political action committee and lobbyists for Roche and Genentech have made campaign contributions to many House members, including some who filed statements in the Congressional Record. And company employees have been among the hosts at fund-raisers for some of those lawmakers. But Evan L. Morris, head of Genentech’s Washington office, said, “There was no connection between the contributions and the statements.”

Mr. Morris said Republicans and Democrats, concerned about the unemployment rate, were receptive to the company’s arguments about the need to keep research jobs in the United States.

The statements were not intended to change the bill, which was not open for much amendment during the debate. They were meant to show bipartisan support for certain provisions, even though the vote on passage generally followed party lines.

Democrats emphasized the bill’s potential to create jobs in health care, health information technology and clinical research on new drugs.

Republicans opposed the bill, but praised a provision that would give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to approve generic versions of expensive biotechnology drugs, along the lines favored by brand-name companies like Genentech.

Lawmakers from both parties said it was important to conduct research on such “biosimilar” products in the United States. Several took a swipe at aggressive Indian competitors.

Asked about the Congressional statements, a lobbyist close to Genentech said: “This happens all the time. There was nothing nefarious about it.”

In separate statements using language suggested by the lobbyists, Representatives Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri and Joe Wilson of South Carolina, both Republicans, said: “One of the reasons I have long supported the U.S. biotechnology industry is that it is a homegrown success story that has been an engine of job creation in this country. Unfortunately, many of the largest companies that would seek to enter the biosimilar market have made their money by outsourcing their research to foreign countries like India.”

In remarks on the House floor, Representative Phil Hare, Democrat of Illinois, recalled that his family had faced eviction when his father was sick and could not make payments on their home. He said the House bill would save others from such hardship.

In a written addendum in the Congressional Record, Mr. Hare said the bill would also create high-paying jobs. Timothy Schlittner, a spokesman for Mr. Hare, said: “That part of his statement was drafted for us by Roche pharmaceutical company. It is something he agrees with.”

The boilerplate in the Congressional Record included some conversational touches, as if actually delivered on the House floor.

In the standard Democratic statement, Representative Robert A. Brady of Pennsylvania said: “Let me repeat that for some of my friends on the other side of the aisle. This bill will create high-paying, high-quality jobs in health care delivery, technology and research in the United States.”

Mr. Brady’s chief of staff, Stanley V. White, said he had received the draft statement from a lobbyist for Genentech’s parent company, Roche.

“We were approached by the lobbyist, who asked if we would be willing to enter a statement in the Congressional Record,” Mr. White said. “I asked him for a draft. I tweaked a couple of words. There’s not much reason to reinvent the wheel on a Congressional Record entry.”

Some differences were just a matter of style. Representative Yvette D. Clarke, Democrat of New York, said, “I see this bill as an exciting opportunity to create the kind of jobs we so desperately need in this country, while at the same time improving the lives of all Americans.”

Representative Donald M. Payne, Democrat of New Jersey, used the same words, but said the bill would improve the lives of “ALL Americans.”

Mr. Payne and Mr. Brady said the bill would “create new opportunities and markets for our brightest technology minds.” Mr. Pascrell said the bill would “create new opportunities and markets for our brightest minds in technology.”

In nearly identical words, three Republicans — Representatives K. Michael Conaway of Texas, Lynn Jenkins of Kansas and Lee Terry of Nebraska — said they had criticized many provisions of the bill, and “rightfully so.”

But, each said, “I do believe the sections relating to the creation of a market for biosimilar products is one area of the bill that strikes the appropriate balance in providing lower cost options.”

By Karen Tumulty, courtesy of TIME

Those of us former little girls of a certain age can remember a doll that we all had to have. She was called Chatty Cathy, and if you pulled a string in her neck, she would say things like “Please brush my hair” and “Let’s have a party!”

It turns out that Chatty Cathy and the United States House of Representatives have a lot in common. Except in Congress’ case, it is the biotechnology industry that has been pulling the string.

In today’s New York Times, Robert Pear has a story that tells us how it happened that more than a dozen lawmakers made virtually the same statement in the official record of the House health care debate. (It’s worth knowing that these are not necessarily speeches they gave on the floor itself, but rather, what gets printed in the Congressional Record when they ask permission to “revise and extend” their remarks. So no one actually hears them say it, but it does go into the official history of the event, and it does put them firmly on record. It also tells the lobbyists’ paymasters that they are getting good return on their investment.)

In this case, the statement in question had actually been written by the biotechnolgy industry–which, as Michael Scherer and I wrote a few weeks back, has been a big winner in the health reform debate, rolling over even such powerful figures as Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman to get its way. Pear (a reporter whose digging skills are legendary among those of us who have been around Washington a while) tells us:

Those statements generally went something like this:

A lobbyist whom Pear describes as “close to Genentech” insists that there is nothing nefarious about any of this, and that it happens all the time. Indeed, this is not the first I’ve heard of something along these lines. One practitioner was the infamous lobbyist Jack Abramoff.:

[As federal officials pursue a wide-ranging investigation into the activities of Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, his arrest on fraud charges in the purchase of a Florida casino boat company has increasingly focused attention on a little-known congressman from rural Ohio.

Rep. Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio) placed comments in the Congressional Record favorable to Abramoff's 2000 purchase of the casino boat company, SunCruz Casinos. Two years later, Ney sponsored legislation to reopen a casino for a Texas Indian tribe that Abramoff represented....]

A few years later, Ney paid unusual attention to another Abramoff client, the Florida gambling boat company SunCruz, which was headquartered more than 1,000 miles outside of Ney’s congressional district. Abramoff and his business partner were trying to buy the cruise ship fleet from Konstantinos “Gus” Boulis, but Boulis was demanding unwelcome additional terms.

In March 2000, Ney used the Congressional Record to assail Boulis.

“On the Ohio River we have gaming interests that run clean operations and provide quality entertainment,” Ney wrote. “I don’t want to see the actions of one bad apple in Florida, or anywhere else to affect the business aspect of this industry or hurt any innocent casino patron in our country.”

Ney’s remarks were orchestrated by Michael Scanlon, a former DeLay spokesman who had just been hired to work for Abramoff at Preston Gates & Ellis LLP. Scanlon had approached Ney through his chief of staff, Neil Volz, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Volz has repeatedly declined to be interviewed.

A few months later, Boulis agreed in principle to sell SunCruz to Abramoff and Kidan for $147.5 million. The deal closed in the fall. But Abramoff and Kidan failed to make good on a $23 million payment owed to Boulis, court records show.

When Boulis was being difficult in the negotiations, Ney again made an official statement, this time heaping praise on Kidan.

“Since my previous statement, I have come to learn that SunCruz Casino now finds itself under new ownership and, more importantly, that its new owner has a renowned reputation for honesty and integrity,” Ney said in the Congressional Record on Oct. 26, 2000. “The new owner, Mr. Adam Kidan, is most well known for his successful enterprise, Dial-a-Mattress, but he is also well known as a solid individual and a respected member of his community.

“While Mr. Kidan certainly has his hands full in his efforts to clean up SunCruz’s reputation, his track record as a businessman and as a citizen lead me to believe that he will easily transform SunCruz from a questionable enterprise to an upstanding establishment that the gaming community can be proud of.”

But Kidan’s “track record” included a string of lawsuits, judgments, liens, bankruptcies and failed businesses. His Dial-a-Mattress franchise in the District was in bankruptcy. He had filed personal bankruptcy, and he had surrendered his law license in New York after being accused of fraud. One of his mentors, Anthony Moscatiello, was alleged by law enforcement to be an accountant for New York’s Gambino crime family.

Ney later said he did not know about Kidan’s background.

Ney ended up spending some time in prison; Abramoff is still there. So is this a sign of corruption, coziness or just laziness on the part of lawmakers? Whatever it is, it stinks.

250 morti in 10 anni sono in media 25 vittime all’anno.

It’s rare that competing drug companies team together to work on a common problem. But that

It’s rare that competing drug companies team together to work on a common problem. But that’s just what Biogen, Elan, and Roche are doing right now. The problem is a condition called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and two different drugs have been found to increase the risk of the rare neurological condition. So these three drugmakers are coming together and sharing data to find out why their drugs might be causing PML in some patients.

The drug Tysabri, which is used to treat multiple sclerosis, is sold by under a joint venture between Biogen and Elan but was taken off the market this year because of its link to PML. Also pulled this year due to ties to PML was Roche’s psoriasis drug Raptiva. The drugmakers involved will create a global database of PML cases that will be used to predict, prevent, and treat infections. While their motivation for this collaboration might be driven in part by a desire to get their drugs back on the market, it’s still nice to see drug companies put patients ahead of secrecy and competition. More of these collaborations would be welcome in the future, whenever multiple drugs are linked to a common debilitating side effect.

Read more about this in the Wall St Journal.

L’inchiesta di Io me e Guana:

A voi l’ardua sentenza.

ciao,

guana.

Monoclonal antibodies are again in the hot seat for alliances. On November 11 2009 Alder Biopharmace

Monoclonal antibodies are again in the hot seat for alliances. On November 11 2009 Alder Biopharmaceuticals, a Seattle-based biotechnology company specialising in antibodies struck a deal with Bristol-Myers Squibb that could be worth more than $1 billion. At present this stands as one of the largest partnerships announced for 2009.

Under the deal, Britsol-Myers Squibb gains a worldwide exclusive license to develop Alder’s drug, ALD518, a monoclonal antibody, for all potential uses except cancer. Bristol has the option to market the drug as a treatment for cancer outside the US. In return, Alder will get $85 million in upfront cash, as much as US$764 million in payments for reaching development and regulatory milestones, sales-related milestone payments that could exceed $200 million, and an undisclosed royalty rate on product sales. Alder may also require Bristol to make a US$20 million equity investment to support an initial public offering, if it chooses to go that route.

Alder has developed the antibody ALD518 to follow Roche’s tocilizumab (Actemra). The Roche drug, the first in its class, is an antibody designed to block the receptor of an inflammatory protein called IL-6 that hammers the joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients. This approach could offer doctors an alternative to the $10 billion-a-year class of drugs that block a different protein called TNF, like Amgen’s etanercept (Enbrel) and Abbott Laboratories’ adalimumab (Humira). Analysts estimate the sales of Roche’s drug could annually capture about $2 billion of this huge market.

Using its proprietary technology to develop monoclonal antibodies in yeast instead of mammalian culture traditionally used elsewhere, Alder’s antibody, which like the Roche drug is designed to block the IL-6 protein target, has the advantage of not only being cheaper to produce but the potential to last longer in the bloodstream and therefore can be given less frequently than other antibodies, possibly as little as three or four times a year instead of once a month. Alder has completed a Phase II trial with about 120 patients who got ALD518 for rheumatoid arthritis, but the results have not yet been made public.

The alliance is the second big partnership Bristol has signed with a Seattle biotech company this year. In January the company entered an alliance with ZymoGenetics to co-develop and market a new interferon drug with fewer side effects for hepatitis C patients. The deal could be woirth more than $1 billion. It is also the second collaboration for Alder this year, having agreed in June 2009 to develop new antibodies for neurological disease for Schering-Plough in June 2009.
