Should there be a trend that never goes out of fashion, it would be the passion for long skirt.  It’s one of the classics in clothing style that never dies.

Every now and then, fashion industry introduces an in-thing on wardrobe.  Vintage, retro, and rockabilly styles took most part of 1950s; Victorian and hippy clothes in 1960s; punks in 1970s; hip hops in 1980s and 1990s; and in 2000s, anything goes with a touch of futuristic and techno designs.

But no matter how these styles flooded every one’s closet, for women, the fervor for long skirt never fades.  In fashion runways, fashion designers and trend aficionados never miss those modish long skirts.  With all the styles and designs introduced, long skirts had overcome the tests of time over the passed centuries.  Women from all walks of life wore them in their own choice of fabrics and cuts, simply non-decorated or embroidered with sequins, beads, and laces.

Looking at different perspectives, women have implicit and obvious reasons for having long skirts their passion.

As apparel, long skirt is the most modest today.  Almost all types of clothing one can see in most women nowadays reveal delicate parts of the body, enticing something unethical and immoral thoughts and acts.  With long skirt, a woman can keep secret what must be kept in secret.

At present, long skirts are considered trendsetters.  But for people who have worn them first, they are for protection.  They wore them very long and loose-fitting.  It was not in 19th and 20th centuries only that long skirts were introduced.  Even women in the ancient times such as the Israelites, wore long skirts mainly for protection and obedience to a commandment given to them – not to wear clothing that are of men.

Long skirt is more than a fashion material.  It plays a vital role in gender identification.  Because its creation was primarily intended for women, it gives everybody an impression that someone wearing a long skirt is a woman.  Long skirts accentuate a woman’s femininity and help to easily distinguish a female from a male.

Women’s passion for long skirt is beyond fashion.  As long as a woman exists, there will be a trend for long skirts.

Mad Dog Davies Band returns to Nantwich for a one-off performance on Friday.

The rockabilly group, who have been on the road for more than a decade, will be appearing at The Railway Hotel.

Vocalist Bryn ‘Mad Dog’ Davies was recently described by Offbeat magazine in the USA as “Awesome…. a front man most bands would die for.”

The band has made regular appearances at the Isle Of Man TT and the summer festival circuit, as well playing to its loyal fanbase in pubs and clubs across the UK.

The Railway Hotel landlord Nigel Humphries is advising punters to arrive early due to the large crowds the band pulls in.

The performance starts at 9.30pm, admission is free. Contact the hotel on 01270 623482.

Herein is a narrow list of similarly sounding and themed Americana recordings released in 2009 which I’ve played often over the KBCS airwaves and the nodepression.com podcast. I like them. They are well written and well played albums worthy of hard earned money and multiple listens and for me that’s the trick. Further defense (of some) of my choices will follow. Preparatevi, perchè sta arrivando un ciclone assoluto. Loro si chiamano Baseballs, vengono dalla Germania e hanno avuto una idea geniale: ricantare i successi del pop in chiave rockabilly. Fate conto di aver mandato indietro le lancette del tempo negli anni di Elvis. I ritmi sono quelli. Sono che invece di sentire il rock anni 60 sentite, per esempio, “Umbrella” di Rihanna (la trovate sopra).

Nel Nord Europa sono già impazziti, in Finlandia il loro album d’esordio ”Strike” è schizzato in vetta alle classifiche, così come il singolo di cui sopra. L’idea è geniale e divertente. Alcuni pezzi sono veramente esilaranti. Ricordate: “I don’t feel like dancing” degli Scissor Sisters? Loro l’hanno rifatta così.  E che dire di “Hot ‘n cold“, fresco successo di Katy Perry oppure di “Bleeding love” di Leona Lewis? O ancora, chi non ricorda “This Love” dei Maroon 5? No, così non le avete proprio mai sentite (soprattutto l’ultima in versione crooner).

Geni assoluti. Andiamo avanti. Eccovi le loro versioni di “Angels” di Robbie Williams, “The look” dei Roxette, “Hey there Delilah“, dei Plane White T’s (per chi non conescesse l’originale di questo successone del 2007, sta qui), “Don’t cha“ delle Pussycat Dolls, “Love in this club” di Usher. Per non parlare nientemeno che di “Pokerface” di Lady Gaga.  C’ è spazio anche per un pezzo meno noto come “Gives you hell” della band rock alternativa americana All American Rejects (l’originale è questo).  Troppo divertenti. Il modo migliore per cominciare la settimana.

We savored our last day in New Orleans, exploring the city, enjoying a classic lunch at Ignatius, and walking around the Audubon Park (which is beautiful and full of all kinds of water birds). The weather was exciting, because Hurricane Ida was blowing past us to the east. That night Mad Tea joined Chris and Ashley’s Three Piece Spicy Band for their weekly show at Ernie K-Doe’s Mother-in-Law Lounge.

The Mother-in-Law Lounge is a sight to behold. It was created in 1994by R&B singer Ernie K-Doe’s wife, Antoinette, to celebrate his career. It is full of mementos of his successes, most notably his hit song “Mother-in-Law”. The whole place had to be re-done after Katrina, but thankfully it’s still there. Antoinette and K-Doe are both deceased (Antoinette passed away during Mardi Gras this year), and Antoinette’s daughter Betty now runs the place. It is a totally funky, one-of-a-kind spot.

The outside has murals of K-Doe, Antoinette and of Quintron and Miss Pussycat – New Orleans musicians who helped revive K-Doe’s music later in his life. (Editor’s note:  Quintron and Miss Pussycat are absolutely fantastic and Jason and I are big fans of their music.) Outside is also a fantastical garden with plants in bathtubs and other colorful yard art.

The centerpiece inside the Mother-in-Law Lounge is a mannequin of K-Doe, which gets dressed up in different outfits and is taken out to second-line parades and other events. Many of the photos in the Lounge were of people (including Antoinette) posed with the mannequin. It’s beautifully bizarre.

Three Piece Spicy and Mad Tea rocked out that night. Betty is a hoot, and she served up awesome soul food for everyone. I slipped off to the van at one point to start writing a new song. New Orleans had infused me with creative inspiration.

After the show, we hung out with Betty and a few Mother-in-Law Lounge regulars, laughing and enjoying the setting. Once again we stayed up until the wee hours of the morning.

I am so happy that we had such a kick-ass time in the Crescent City.

My apologies for the lateness on part three people. I originally wanted it to run Friday, but got a last minute call to DJ at the Ace Hotel in NYC for an after party for Pop Up Flea and Tanner Goods. Better late than never. Shout out to Mark and Sam from Tanner Goods, Connie from 503 Stylus, and to Astrud the staff at the Ace for digging the music of Funk and Soul 45’s all night long. Let’s talk about some music and FMF last night in London.

When my friend Andy asked if I wanted to check out his night wit the legendary Keb Darge at Madame Jo Jo’s my last night in London, I jumped at the chance. I had been a fan of Keb since I discovered his Legendary Deep Funk records on BBE in the 90’s. Let’s just say, had it not been Keb’s putting out these records, there may have not been a Flea Market Funk. Yes, I still would have been a DJ, but it was Keb, Josh Davis, producers like Pete Rock and Premier, and even my friend Andy who pushed me to find these types of records even more here in America. So here we are over ten years later and I’m in London. I had heard about (but never been to) Keb’s Deep Funk Friday nights, but it was Andy a few years ago that told me about Lost and Found. On this night, he and Keb spin Rockabilly, early American R & B, Jump Blues, and Northern Soul. I was a bit puzzled, because this kind of stuff wouldn’t go over here on a weekly basis. A one off yes, but weekly would be a challenge. Lost and Found has been going STRONG every week for three years. This I had to see for myself.

Madame Jo Jo’s is a dimly lit, well decorated, burlesque type hall. It honestly looks like it hasn’t changed since the 60’s (why change something that works?). In a little while, it’s sunken in dance floor (little did I know), would be packed with young people dancing their ass off to my surprise, 50’s R & B. I arrived early with Andy, and met Keb and his wife Edith. Soon after the crowd began to filter in. As I was trying to keep up with Keb with Maker’s and Cokes, the crowd grew larger and larger. Before I knew it, the night was in full swing. Keb and Andy went from obscure Jump Blues to Ray Charles to Elvis (Jailhouse Rock?!) to Northern Soul Classics as the crowd of twenty somethings and people who traveled from as far as Manchester to appreciate the night, dance like they were at the Wigan Casino, and just enjoy the best Saturday night spot in London. If this is any indication where the music scene is going, we’re in for a shake up. From a guy who reinvented Northern Soul, invented the Rare Groove and Funk scene, and now has this night going, my money is going to Ladbroke’s on this scene. I want to thank Andy and Keb for inviting me out and showing me a great time. Here are some photos from the night:

Nada melhor que um Rockabilly para começar a semana… talvez uma metralhadora seja melhor  … mas vamos ficar com o Rockabilly por enquanto.

E vamos com aquele que muitos dizem ser o melhor. Melhor que Elvis? Bom, isso é opinião de cada um …  estou falando de Eddie Cochran.

Em 1956, fez uma participação no filme “The Girl Can’t Help it” (com a maravilhosa Jayne Mansfield) tocando Twenty Flight Rock. Quem também aparece no filme é Little Richard e Gene Vincent. Só para citar um caso e ter uma idéia da importancia e do impacto dessa música:    Em 6 de julho de 1957 um garoto de 15 anos tocou-a imitando a performance de Cochran com o objetivo de convencer John Lennon a fazer parte de um grupo de Liverpool chamado The Quarrymen, que mais tarde se tornou os Beatles. O garoto era Paul McCartney… Parece que ele conseguiu … mas isso é só parte da história, pois boa parte da galera que fez bonito nos anos 60 assistiu esse filme.

Voltando aos anos 50 … e voltando a Eddie Cochran … uma coisa interessante sobre sua história é que ele começou a carreira numa dupla com Hank Cochran chamada The Cochran Brothers. A dupla não teve sequencia e Hank, que nem era irmão de Eddie, seguiu carreira escrevendo música country. Eddie mesmo teve uma série de músicas bacanas    , e alcançou seu maior sucesso com Summertime Blues. Outras bem interessantes : “C’mon Everybody“, “Somethin’ Else” (regravada por Keith Richards e até por Sid Vicious ), e por aí vai …

Tudo tem um fim, o dele foi bem trágico e precoce … em 16 de Abril de 1960 durante uma turnê no Reino Unido, o taxi que levava Gene Vincent e Eddie sofre um acidente na estrada. Cochran foi arremessado para fora do carro sofrendo diversos ferimentos na cabeça … um dia depois, aos 21 anos, morre no hospital. Contando mais uma tragédia para o Rock’n Roll já que um ano antes Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens e J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson morreram num acidente de avião. Gene Vincent que também estava no carro sobreviveu mas nunca se recuperou psicologicamente da perda de seu melhor amigo.

Here’s the Watchcap in Plum,  a new colour for this winter, I LOVE it, the weight of this yarn and the Petrol Blue is so nice, it’s a heavier and almost silky yarn that feels super high quality. Don’t get me wrong, I like the other colours are great too, but in a different way, they have a more matt finish. My favourite is still the Wine Red.
