Wanted to share this photo of Rocket running after the first snow of the season. I’ve written often how much Rocket loves to run. While Laura and I cringe over cold runs, Rocket lives for days just like the one pictured.

Rocket has grayed prematurely. However, don’t let any gray hair fool you. Rocket can still launch himself any time he wants. He might not love hot and humid summer runs. Yet, let it get cold, wet or snowy, and Rocket is ready to go long day after day.

Taking Rocket for runs is so much fun. Hope you can get a sense of that from this photo.

Flying Hard with “Fly Hard”

Ever thought of flying through the air with speed of a rocket? That is exactly what you get to do when you play “Fly Hard“. At first the animation and graphics were kind of artsy in a kiddie cartoon type way, but once I gave the game a shot I must admit to being quickly addicted. I started out with the “Something to get me started” rocket and quickly found myself trying to earn more credits to shop and buy upgrades for my rocket. I actually wanted to see how much better, higher, and faster my upgraded rocket could get. I got such a sense of achievement once I got most of my higher level upgrades. The parts, fuel, Boots, and other achievements kept me coming back for more wanting to see just what the next level rocket would be like.

Right now, I am only a three achievements away from being complete in my “Destroyer” category. At the rate of fun I am having with this game I do not think it will be long before all of my achievements are met. I will be recommending this game to my friends and challenging them to match or even surpass my achievements. I highly doubt that will happen since the game is so fun and challenging within itself I may just continue playing and breaking my own records. Hope you like “Fly Hard” as much as I did, Chances are once you have played you will be recommending it to someone else.

Team Rocket. What a nice name for a series of stupid evil. I think they are called that for a reason. Why? As in almost every episode of the cartoon or movie was Pokemon Pokemon, Team Rocket and they could somehow wrong in the end it is the face of the earth and the wicked say, "Team Rocket is powered again …"

Well, Team Rocket are the villains in the world of Pokémon evil, are really sweet. ThatEntertainment for Kids "series, I do not expect to be wrong anyway loose wicked! Sometimes they would gang with the same good, like Ash Ketchum, Misty and Brock, when combined with a common obstacle or difficulty, and only through a work cooperation with the other side can overcome their situation. Yes, it is a good team "bad" here, and I think that the attempt of animation, beyond the point to the importance of group work (perhaps to do, so thereTeam, on behalf of the band), the bad and as can sometimes be better, with the enemy and not against them to work on the job.

I am not formally members of Team Rocket. Jessie and James have seen the two characters in the cartoon series Pokemon, usually as villains of Team Rocket. While Team Rocket is a class organization, these two are the only ones who are regularly on the animated series. Well, maybe you can even count the MeowthPokemon is a cat talk. Meowth takes for the Maneki Neko, which in Japanese means "Beckoning Cat". This cat is known as the home of the cat, Lucky Cat, Money cat or Fortune Cat and his character is shown heavily on the company's sales' price business. Then there Wobbuffet. This is another cute Pokemon, do not do much for Team Rocket. Jump at the right time, and speaks the word"Wobbuffet!" With one arm, scratching his head!

During the show, Jessie and James again all the stops and do their best to try to steal Pokemon too. In general, the goal Pikachu Ash. But still fail to achieve their goals and objectives, as I said before blowing again. This is due to give Pokemon Pikachu or another, are attached shock of lightning or thunder, blowing of the earth! So the bad guys in Pokemon can see, are not so bad andcan not do much harm, after all. You're only a couple of funny characters in Pokemon anime cool cute, things Polish.

DIY - Build your own rocket launcher for your car or motorcycle

The instant you see the idea you may find yourself thinking, “why has no one thought of this before? Why don’t car manufacturers offer these?” It is a rocket launcher for your vehicle. It comes very close to being as cool as The Prometheus Device:

Since this is a version 1 device it is very simple. It appears that:
1) He has mounted a simple launching tube on the bike
2) He has taken a standard Estes rocket engine and, using tape and a stick, turned it into a large bottle rocket
3) Inserted and secured an igniter in the engine, and wired it back to a control panel
4) The control panel appears to be a set of normal pushbutton switches of the type you would buy at Radio Shack, mounted in a Radio Shack type project box and wired to the bike’s battery.
5) Inserted several rockets into the launching tube

When he pushes one of the buttons on the control panel, the igniter lights the rocket engine and the rocket launches. It appears that he can launch one or several rockets, depending on how many buttons he pushes on the control panel.

It’s so simple that just about anyone could do it. It is also likely that anyone trying it would get arrested if they shot this on a highway.

The version 2 device might use somewhat more sophisticated (i.e. stable in flight) rockets that follow a consistent trajectory:

Another variation would be a vehicle mounted Potato Cannon. But there is something elegant about the fact that he can pre-load a number of rockets in a single, small tube.

Check It! the Norway Spiral

Hey, all. This post deals with the recent bit of fun in Norway that got the UFO community all fired up a few days ago…over a rocket launch failure, it turns out. Of course, there were theories about black holes, meteors, the obligatory UFO claims, of course accompanied by claims of a cover-up when the Russians first denied, then confirmed, a failed missile test. I thought I’d have a little fun posting links to articles and videos (and articles with videos…) from the first few days after this skeptically amusing incident. Yep, I’m pretty sure that the events of the past few days have cleared up any big mysteries about this, and for those of you who are suspicious of a cover-up…well, my diabolically sinister paymasters have informed me that my cheque is in the mail…(chortle evilly, tentacles waving…)

Critics said they could not believe the image was genuine, particularly when set against other photos of the model.The advertisement triggered more than 700 complaints, led by LibDem MP Jo Swinson, who has called for the banning of airbrushing in advertising.She said: ‘If advertisers think that someone as beautiful as Twiggy needs to be so heavily airbrushed, then what hope is there for the rest of us?

‘Experts have proved airbrushing contributes to a host of problems in women and young girls such as depression and eating disorders.’Today the Advertising Standards Authority says in a ruling: ‘The post-production retouching of this ad, specifically in the eye area, could give consumers a misleading impression of the effect the product could achieve.’However, it added that most older women would understand that Twiggy’s youthful appearance was not solely achieved by using the Olay product.Procter & Gamble, which makes Olay, said the ‘minor retouching’ had been inconsistent with its policies and it had already replaced the image with one with ‘no postproduction work in the eye area’.

Burial cloth found in Jerusalem cave casts doubt on authenticity of Turin Shroud

Archaeologists have discovered the first known burial shroud in Jerusalem from the time of Christ’s crucifixion – and say it casts serious doubt on the claimed authenticity of the Turin Shroud.Ancient shrouds from the period have been found before in the Holy Land, but never in Jerusalem.Researchers say the weave and design of the shroud discovered in a burial cave near Jerusalem’s Old City are completely different to the Turin Shroud.

Radiocarbon tests and artefacts found in the cave prove almost beyond doubt that it was from the same time of Christ’s death.It was made with a simple two-way weave – not the twill weave used on the Turin Shroud, which textile experts say was introduced more than 1,000 years after Christ lived.And instead of being a single sheet like the famous item in Turin, the Jerusalem shroud is made up of several sections, with a separate piece for the head.Professor Shimon Gibson, the archaeologist who discovered the tomb, said ancient writings and contemporary shrouds from other areas had suggested this design, and the Jerusalem shroud finally provided the physical evidence.

The debate over the Turin Shroud will not go away. Last month a Vatican researcher said she had found the words ‘Jesus Nazarene’ on the shroud, proving it was the linen cloth which was wrapped around Christ’s body.

Tests: DNA analysis of the fibres of the Jerusalem shroud, have revealed it dates back to the time of Christ’s death. Experts say it casts doubt on the authenticity of the Turin Shroud.

Barbara Frale said computer analysis of photographs of the shroud revealed extremely faint words written in Greek, Aramaic and Latin which attested to its authenticity.But the shroud-wrapped body dated to the time of Christ discovered in Jerusalem seems to point in the opposite direction.The shroud was found around the remains of a man in a sealed chamber of a burial cave in the Hinnom Valley overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem by archaeologists from the Hebrew University and the Albright Research Institute, both in Jerusalem.

DNA tests indicated the man had suffered from leprosy and died of tuberculosis.That was probably why his burial cave was sealed – a move that preserved the shroud and even some of the man’s hair for 2,000 years.

Professor Gibson said the Turin Shroud did not fit what was known of burial practices in first-century Palestine – now confirmed by the Jerusalem shroud.’The Turin shroud is a single sheet made with a twill weave.The twill weave is known from this part of the world only from the mediaeval period, so we’re talking about something that’s from the Middle Ages,’ Gibson told the Daily Mail.’But the Jerusalem shroud confirmed another local practice which casts even more doubt on the Turin artefact.’It wasn’t one continuous sheet,’ said Gibson, pointing out the Turin Shroud is a single rectangular sheet measuring about 14ft by 3ft.’What our shroud shows is that the practice of having a separate shroud or wrapping for the body and for the head was common practice.’There was a separate wrapping for the head itself, which was very important because when they brought someone to burial they would place the head wrapping separately on the face in case the person wasn’t actually dead and woke up again, they would be able to blow off the face wrapping and shout for help,’ said Gibson.

Evidence: Archaeologist Shimon Gibson, centre, said tests had revealed the man suffered from leprosy and died from tuberculosis’This did occur quite a lot in antiquity because they didn’t have the medical means we have today.’The idea was that if you enshrouded somebody, you had a separate set of wrappings for the body and a separate set of wrappings for the head,’ he said.Ancient rabbinical writings mention people who woke up, apparently miraculously and lived for years afterwards.It was the custom at the time for the family to visit the tomb after three days to check their relative was indeed dead.Gibson said this was probably the source of the Gospel story about Jesus’s followers visiting his tomb three days after the Crucifixion, when they found it empty.

The Hinnom Valley where the Jerusalem shroud was discovered has long been associated with death. The Gospel of Matthew calls it Akeldama or ‘Field of Blood.’It is dotted with Roman-era burial tombs carved out of caves in the rock face.In ancient times, pagan tribes burned children alive there as offerings to the god Moloch.The ancient Israelites called the valley Gehinnom – the Hebrew for ‘Hell’ – and it was the site where the scapegoat was driven over a cliff on the Day of Atonement in Solomon’s Temple.

Whitehall’s £8m stress ball splurge: Ministers lavish cash on promotional gimmicks

More than £8million of taxpayers’ money is being spent on goods such as cakes, stress balls and Frisbees decorated with government propaganda messages.Only a week after Gordon Brown promised to slash spending on marketing, Whitehall officials have unveiled new contracts for ‘vanity marketing’ projects.The money will go towards buying items such as umbrellas, mouse mats, beanie hats and even food branded with the logos of quangos and Whitehall departments.One company awarded the right to produce branded food specialises in making sticky cupcakes.Ministers and the heads of government-funded agencies will also be able to buy mugs, aprons and balloons decorated with advertising slogans and messages promoting official initiatives.The Tories last night expressed their anger that new contracts have been awarded so soon after the Pre-Budget Report in which everyone earning over £20,000 a year was told they would have to pay more in National Insurance contributions to plug the soaring deficit.Details of the companies selected to provide the branded goods were slipped out on Monday by the Central Office of Information, the government agency that co-ordinates government publicity campaigns.That was exactly a week after Mr Brown promised a ’smarter government’ initiative to cut costs and ‘put the frontline first’.The Prime Minister vowed to halve Whitehall spending on consultancy work, and reduce spending on marketing by a quarter – saving £650million a year in all.

The Government’s total spending on public relations, marketing and advertising reached £540million last year, with Mr Brown spending £202million more than in Tony Blair’s last year in Downing Street.The contracts announced on Monday are worth £8million and run for the next three years.Shadow Cabinet Office Minister Nick Hurd said: ‘Gordon Brown’s cupcake contract will be too much for taxpayers to stomach.’Within a week, his pledge to put the frontline first has been exposed as an utter sham.’It is outrageous that Labour ministers are hiking taxes on hard-working families to pay for this vanity marketing.’Gordon Brown has lost the plot by his spending spree on Government-branded aprons and beanie hats.’A COI spokesman said: ‘COI does not order cupcakes. Our promotional items are practical everyday items that support government conferences and campaigns on important issues such as armed forces recruitment.’The contract is worth around £3million per year. We buy directly from trade sources helping save between 20 and 60 per cent on market rates.’By bringing together marketing spend across government in 2008-9, COI helped save £290million.’

Details of the spending on branded goods come as the National Audit Office today questions Labour’s claims to have made efficiency savings in government.A hard-hitting report by the spending watchdog reveals that as much as 34 per cent of reported savings by the Department for Transport have been ’significantly overstated’.The NAO also says it has ’significant concerns’ over 17 per cent of savings at the Home Office.

A woman gave birth in her bathroom moments before police arrived at her Winnipeg home to arrest her, Canadian officials said.

Police breathed life into the newborn moments after they arrived to arrest the mother on outstanding warrants, officers said on Tuesday.Two street crimes police officers happened to arrive on the bloody bathroom scene on Sunday afternoon, a few seconds after the 32-year-old woman gave birth squatting over a toilet.One of the officers plucked the unresponsive baby boy from the water-filled toilet bowl and began CPR, eventually getting the infant to breathe on its own.Heather Richard, unaware that she was pregnant and startled by the birth of her first child, had gone into the washroom with severe pain in her abdomen.The baby “just fell out,” she told the daily Winnipeg Sun. “I thought it was my intestines, so I’m freaking out.”"But then it’s a little boy,” she said.The boy, weighing five pounds, nine ounces, was taken to hospital in critical condition, having suffered a skull fracture, most likely when his head struck the toilet.Police told AFP the newborn was now in stable condition in hospital and was expected to recover, while the mother would be asked to deal with the theft charges at a later date.”I’m still in shock. I’m not supposed to have kids,” Miss Richard told the Sun, explaining that she had suffered three miscarriages and was told by doctors that she would not be able to conceive.

Tree Man’s branches grow back

An Indonesian man dubbed the “tree man” because of the gnarled warts all over his body has said his condition had worsened again, although he still hopes to recover and find a job.

Dede, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, returned home from hospital in August after six kilos of warts were surgically removed from his body and has been treated as an out-patient since.

“Those (warts) that were removed are growing again and started to reappear after I returned home,” he said, adding that for a time he could go fishing and use a cell phone but now needed assistance again for such activity.An American doctor has previously said the warts were the result of severe Human Pappiloma Virus (HPV) infection, but the disease is not life-threatening. Doctors say his case is thought to be the worst of its type in the world.The Discovery Channel recently made a documentary about Dede’s affliction and his life.Dede, 37, first noticed the warts on his body after cutting his knee as a teenager.Over time, Dede was sacked from his job, deserted by his wife and shunned by neighbours as the horn-like extensions covered much of his body and stopped him working. He has two children.”I’m not desperate but I want to recover,” he added, speaking from his home in the remote West Java village of Tanjung Jaya.An Indonesian doctor said he would have further operations at the end of December or early next year to remove and reduce warts.”We have told him that his disease could not be 100 per cent cured. In the previous operation, we only tried to increase his quality of life,” said Rachmat Dinata, one of a team of doctors treating him at the Hasan Sadikin hospital in Bandung, a city near his village.Dinata said he would need at least two operations every year.For a while, Dede was forced to take part in a circus act in Bandung in order to make ends meet.But after his case received widespread publicity, donations from the public and allowed him to get treatment.government helpHe has also been able to buy some land to grow rice and a second-hand car so his relatives can bring him to hospital.

Hola,

Today we do South America and Africa in my epic quest to find the best films of the decade. This is a short list (only 5 titles- I like round numbers), because if I’ve even heard of them, let alone seen them, then they’re automatically good, and I hadn’t seen as many as I thought- only about 15- I could have put 10 in, but I don’t think the bottom 3 warrant making a best of list, so there are a few near misses that I’m not mentioning. These are actually the best ones- and I’ve included the only one I outright hate as the Dishonourable Mention. I’ve got a couple more Brazilian Films to watch so I may come back and add to it, so we’ll see. Not to mention that several of them that I thought were 21st Century were actually late 90’s.

Anyhow on with the list.

5) Linha De Passe (2008-Brazil)

I find it difficult to write about this film. I mean, I know objectively it is a good film (I don’t think Sallas has ever made a bad one), but it was billed in this country as a sequel to the simply magnificent Central Station. It isn’t. It doesn’t even cover the same material.

Anyhow, LDP covers the tribulations of a favella dwelling Sao Paulo family. The heavily pregnant mother is a maid for a rich woman, the eldest son dreams of being a footballer, but he’s too old, the second son is a sort of priest in his spare time while holding down a shitty job in a petrol station, the second youngest is an out-and-out scumbag while the youngest is merely a kid. It is a good film, with moments of genuine brilliance (the motorcycle scenes), but at the end of the day it is an unremittingly bleak film and I can’t help but think it’s a tad overrated.

In all honesty, if you feel in the mood to watch a violence free film about poverty in Brazil, then watch Central Station. This is a good film, but that one is a great film.

4) The Devil’s Backbone (2001- Mexico)

Now we’re talking. Before Del Toro made his way to Hollywood to make Comic book films, he was a horror director of some note. This, his third effort, is a genuinely frightening ghost story set in a Spanish orphanage.

It’s a taut little film, but what elevates it head and shoulders above the crowd is the performance of the kids. Creepy, compelling stuff. To be honest, like with all Del Toro’s stuff, I found the non-supernatural elements of the film to be far more interesting than the ghost story. He captures life for the orphans in fascist Spain in a gripping and compelling fashion. A really, really good film.

3) Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001- Mexico)

I said this about Shaun of The Dead, but I think the same applies to this film- everyone forgets how fresh it was on release. Cuaron’s pre Harry Potter film is surprisingly complex, even if you can see the ending coming a mile away.

A cross between a coming of age story and a road movie, YTMT relies heavily on the central performances of the young leads, and luckily for them one of them is Bernal. It’s not a melodrama, as such, but it is a diverting time, and I stick it on every now and again at home if I can’t think of what else to watch.

It was unfairly labeled as soft porn in this country on release, but if you’re looking for wank material then this isn’t it.

You do have to wonder about the 28 year old woman that’s molesting them though.

2)Tsotsi (2005- South Africa)

This makes my best of the decade list, so I’m going to be brief with this as well. It was billed as the South African version of City of God. It isn’t- that’s absolute horseshit.

What it is, is a redemption story of a young township dwelling thug as he has to come to terms with the fact that he’s accidentally kidnapped a baby. It has none of the kinetic energy of City of God, and is not really comparable. Rather, I think this is a touching story, that’s well filmed and although it’s clearly going to end badly for our thug hero, you kind of hope that it won’t.

Stirring, Oscar winning stuff and well worth a couple of hours of anyone’s time.

1)City of God (2003- Brazil)

As is to be expected, this Brazilian masterpiece (based on a true story) also ranks in my top 10 of the decade.

City of God is a kaleidoscope of mayhem and violence charting a young slum dweller, Rocket, as he grows up during the rise and fall of one of Rio de Janeiro’s most notorious gangsters. A fucking monster of a film- and one that is endlessly entertaining, truly gripping and stylistically superb.

Apparently Meirelles next film, Blindness, is a steaming stack of shit, but that doesn’t matter- this is enough of a legacy for anyone.

Dishonourable Mention:

Maria full of Grace (2003-Columbia)

Load of fucking hand wringing nonsense about drugs mules. I’ll give you a clue- fuckheads- this kind of blatantly manipulative shit only works if you give a fuck about any of the characters in the film.

Needless to say, I thought she was an obnoxious cow, and as such I did not even summon up the slightest bit of interest at her plight.

Fuck this noise. It’s also as boring as fuck, but that is a direct consequence of crushing itself to death by being “worthy”. It does, to be fair, ask questions, but half the problem is that it doesn’t even bother trying to answer them.

Rubbish. Pah.

As usual, I’ve more than likely forgotten some, and I will be returning to update this list later (I’m thinking about a few more, that I desperately need to rewatch before putting them in or out)

Holiday is in the Air

At a friend’s house, I just couldn’t help taking photos of a few geeky ornaments – rocket, star ships – on the Christmas tree.

The best part about December? Parties, delicious food and cheer all around. And if your friend circle include international communities, it’s so much more fun – different traditions, different cuisines. One thing most everyone share? Chocolate! My favorite – chocolates, fruit cakes, more chocolate based sweets…mmmmm. My another favorite? Gift giving and the simple bonding. Receiving gift is nice but I enjoy showering family and friends with gifts, thoughtful and original. I once had a friend who loved bread and all things baked. I loved baking then – bread, cakes, you name it – and wrapping baked goods as gifts. That pretty much stopped when we parted company. Cooking and baking require motivation to feed those you love.

Yesterday was a lot of fun at a friend’s place. The dogs were all over me – pets always come running to me, as if to taunt me for having self-diagnosed OCD. But, I finally mastered giving some orders – getting them to get off of me, to sit and to stay. The credit goes to my friend though for teaching me. One of them got into trouble when she kept scratching me. Poor doggy and a little shameless, if I may add. She came back to me a few minutes later, following me around.

I should start baking bread, pastries, cookies and cakes again – from scratch, mind you. I’m not into shortcuts for traditional meals. Those are done on regular basis, holidays and special occasions deserve a little more. Maybe I will, as soon as I get my oven. Yes, I need brand new oven. The thought of what the previous owner cooked in it is another reason I’ve been putting off using the oven. I may negotiate on many aspects of life. Cleanliness? Non-negotiable. I know, it’s not easy being me.

In the meantime, here’s to love, peace, happiness, health, prosperity.

time capsule: 1993-1996 (in memory of Bandit 105.5)

There used to be a Swedish radio station really worth listening to. I grew up listening to tracks like these until the golden days of this radio station were put to an end sometime in 1996. The station is apparently still around namewise but i bet by now it’ll sound like every other commercial radio station out there. I really miss the DJ:s on Bandit 105.5.

The torch appears to have been passed though, to another nice little radio station called Rocket 95.3fM, but i’d still like to take this opportunity to revive the magic of the years leading up to 1996, before the end of Bandit 105.5

I’ve compiled this playlist of as many songs i can remember being played on that station, let me know if I’ve missed a song that really should be in here.
