The Melbourne Cup took shape this morning with one of the three Melbourne Cup betting favourites, Efficient being scratched from Tuesday’s Cup along with the Godolphin stables main Melbourne Cup chance Kirklees, who failed to fire a shot in the Caulfield Cup.

This has resulted in the Danny O’Brien trained Vigor being a firmer in Melbourne Cup betting after he was scratched form today’s Mackinnon Stakes and saved for Tuesday’s Cup.

Could be a big day for O’Brien who now saddles up the VRC Derby favourite Rockferry, a half brother to former champion 3YO Excellent. Looks like a chance for some serious thunderstorms during the day whic should see the Kiwi Monaco Consul just about jump favourite after as much as 50/1 was bet about him in first Derby betting markets, this bloke eats mud.

Shamoline Warrior has drifted slightly from $3 out to $3.30 but still dominates the betting in this years Derby. Sportingbet are happy to risk the Mark Kavanagh colt not being entirely convinced that the 2500m will suit him compared to others in the race. It has been widely documented the nation wide betting plunge on Rockferry who has been $101 into $4.80 since future betting opened. One Sportingbet punter not so long ago placed a wager of $16k each way at the juicy price of $26 to take out the 3yo Classic. The horse at good value is the Patinack Farm runner Onemorenomore at $10 provided he can settle in the run he will run a good race.

Aimée Ann Duffy, tem 25 anos e com apenas um Álbum, Rockferry já alcançou o primeiro lugar nas paradas de vários países. Rockferry foi lançado em 2008 e concorreu com Viva la Vida do Coldplay e com Amy Winehouse, nomes de peso e já muito conhecidos. Com o seu estilo Soul, seu aspecto delicado, voz forte e rouca essa moça galesa conquistou boa parte das vendas ano passado com mais de 4 milhões de cópias vendidas.
Os críticos explicam o sucesso de Duffy devido ao estilo Soul, em alta nos últimos tempos. Particularmente, eu gostei muito do timbre da voz dela e a maneira como ela conduz cada nota deixando um quê de delicadeza.

1 hora da manhã. Rolar na cama não é meu esporte favorito. Preferível levantar e vir até aqui despejar tudo em vez de ficar remoendo. Essa droga lamurienta que não me deixa pregar os olhos e que me faz acordar com olheiras. Detesto olheiras. Mas detesto mais ainda ficar pensando obsessivamente  em assuntos que não tem mais nada a ver com a minha vida. Já sei! Vou escrever uma carta. É uma carta que jamais chegará à caixa postal dele. Está sendo escrita para ele, mas é para a minha caixa postal que enviarei. Isso é só um rascunho virtual. Quero escrevê-la à mão e quero enviar para o meu endereço. Porque se ele fosse o homem ideal, estaríamos morando no mesmo lugar . Por que escrevo então? Porque foi o personagem que inventei a partir dele que me fez sonhar com o (quase) possível; com uma relação (quase) perfeita e acreditar novamente que não se tratava apenas de uma mitologia cinematográfica. Mas essa história teve um ponto muito positivo. Descobri que não quero saber onde vou estar no dia de amanhã, se aqui se ali se acolá se viva ou se morta. Ainda quero morar na França. Não. Não quero passear na França. Eu quero morar lá nem que seja por seis meses ou um ano. Quero acordar e dar de cara com a torre Eiffel mesmo que seja da janela de um apartamento bem antigo, muquifado mas com aquelas janelas em arco bem grandes. Eu vou colocar uma escrivaninha bem em frente à esta janela e vou olhar para aquela magnífica torre e vou escrever todas estas histórias no meu notebook. Mas se eu tiver sem inspiração, eu descerei por aquelas escadas ensombreadas do prédio velho onde estarei morando, para uma caminhada. E eu vou passear por entre aqueles magníficos cafés parisienses e boulevards, vou ignorar o eterno mau humor daquele povo, vou rir mesmo que me façam uma careta. E vou visitar as bibliotecas e as livrarias só pelo simples prazer de olhar livros e mais livros enfileirados nas prateleiras, mesmo que eu não possa entender uma só palavra do que está escrito ali. Isso me faz lembrar que, se eu quero ir para a França, tenho que pelo menos ter umas noções de francês. Aquele povo se recusa a falar em inglês. Apesar de que eu andei lendo num destes jornais londrinos que o governo francês está tomando uma série de iniciativas no sentido de “adestrar” melhor esse povo na arte de receber turistas. Mas não importa. Não estou indo pra lá para ser turista. Aliás, mesmo estando no estrangeiro, sempre detestei ser confundida com turista. Coisa minha. Turista não conhece nada. Só vê prédios e museus quando vai à Europa. A Europa não é só isso. É muito mais. E para conhecer a verdadeira Europa e para aproveitar tudo, e ao máximo, você tem que viver lá. Trabalhar. Namorar. Fazer amigos. Chorar de saudades de alguém. Rir. Ter problemas pra resolver em uma língua que não é sua. Pagar aluguel. Ou comprar uma casa. E levar o seu filho para a escola. E ter nem que seja um peixe no aquário pra chamar de seu. Eu tenho a necessidade de dizer que eu pertenço àquele local, nem que seja por uma temporada. Mesmo sabendo que não é o lugar onde vou viver pelo resto dos meus dias. Esse é o problema (se é que isso é um problema): não consigo (ou recuso) me sentir como uma estrangeira. Quero bisbilhotar e quero conhecer aquele local como só um nativo conheceria. E quando alguém me pára na rua para pedir informações, sinto orgulho em explicar na língua local segue reto, dobra à direita, pega o ônibus número 257 e você chega na estação de Stratford onde você vai pegar a Jubilee Line e vai descer na London Bridge. Mas também quero voltar a sentir aquele friozinho na barriga que só um daqueles aviões, quando decolam rumo ao desconhecido, conseguem me provocar. Minha mãe diz que eu tenho bicho carpinteiro. Ou melhor, que eu “criei” bicho carpinteiro. Até meus 33 anos eu era o exemplo da mulher caseira. Nunca fui muito de sair. Muito menos de viajar. Mal e mal conheço meu país. Mas quando resolvi botar o pé na estrada, tomei o gostinho. Agora, o difícil vai ser parar. Por essas e outras, meu amor, acho que nem você e nem homem nenhum neste mundo vai ser capaz de me “enlaçar” de novo. Ou, pelo menos, não tão cedo.

I am failing at my job to constantly update and for that I am sorry.  I know I have promised to but you know how that worked out, so I’m not going to promise anymore.  As a matter of fact, you get an update, when I update.  Anyway the title comes from Duffy and her album entitled Rockferry.  I just like the song so, there is no need to try to figure out how the song has anything to do with this posting.

Anyway,  I wrote to the Honourable Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon. Kevin Rudd, MP and he really pissed me off.  His letter was something that his secretary penned, and that was rude considering he had a three month letter of oppurtunity to respond.  If I was Australian and of voting age I wouldn’t vote for the Australian Labor Party ever again.  He didn’t even give me what I asked for.  I learned a lesson though, if you want a reasonable and prudent answer don’t try the Prime Minister’s Office.  I wrote and mailed to the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, so we shall see his response time.  I sent the letter yesterday.  Also I am waiting for the German Chancellor and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, they have had enough time as the Australians.

We’ll see what there definition of prudent is,

5.6.2009 olimme koko joukkio jälleen kilpailemassa Yksityistalli Accusalin estekisoissa. Luokkia oli 60:stä senttimetristä aina sataankahteenkymmeneen, eli vain Toni joutui jäämään kotiin. Kisat sujuivat kaikin puolin …huonosti.

120:n senttimetrin luokassa otimme tammakolmikon kanssa lähes kolmoishäviön. Roosa sijoittui 45/49, Riot 46/49 ja Inis 47/49. Syy tähän tapahtumaan oli tietysti kaikissa muissa kun ratsastajassa *krhm*, joka ei kolmannellakaan kerralla ymmärtänyt, että ei kaikki ole aina niin järjellistä. Rata nimittäin oli melkoisen haastava henkisesti. Olisi ollut niin loogista ratsastaa armeijakuvioiselta esteeltä muurille, mutta ei niin ei. Viimeisellä yrityksellä, Roosan kanssa, pääsin jo ohi muurista, mutta silti hyppäsin VÄÄRÄN sinisen, kun joku avuliaasti yleisöstä niin huusi. “Tummansinistä tarkoitin enkä sitä vaaleaa.” Hohhoijaa. No, tapahtuu sitä paremmissakin piireissä.
Roosa, Riot ja Inis eivät juurikaan välittäneet vesihaudasta, mutta muiden hevosien kanssa oli pieniä ongelmia. Joku hyppäsi sen paikaltaan, joku lähti hyppäämään sitä liian kaukaa kun viesti ei mennyt perille, ja joku molskautti hautaan tasajalkaa niin, että vesi loiskui. Kaikkea kanssa. No, ainakin muistamme nyt treenata sitten hautoja. Muuenkin tammakolmikosta Roosa, Riot ja Inis voi olla pelkästään ylpeä. Inis ja Roosa ovat keränneet  toukokuussa hienon määrän sijoituksia, ja Riot hyvänä “kakkosena.” Itselläni on vaan Riotin kanssa vielä harjoittelemista, koska se on niin erilainen muihin hevosiin verrattuna. Sitten kun Riotin kanssa onnistuu, niin sijoitus tulee varmasti. Se on joko tai, hyvä rata tai täysin huono. Mutta parempaan päin mennään koko ajan.

A&M / Rough Trade

Im Vorfeld wurde Duffy immer wieder mit Amy Winehouse verglichen. Das hatte bei vielen (auch bei mir) zu Folge, dass man wirklich ein zweites Back To Black erwartete. Ist natürlich hanebüchener Unsinn. Während Amy Winehouse eher die Billy Holiday und Motown Fans anspricht, ist Duffy eher mit Dusty Springfield vergleichbar. Man sollte sich also von dem Vergleich freimachen, sonst wird das mit dem Album nichts. Für mich beginnt das Album eigentlich erst ab dem Stück Serious. Was danach folgt ist wirklich ganz groß und macht richtig Spaß. Selbstredend sind Warwick Avenue und Rockferry keine schlechten Stücke (man schaue sich die Songstruktur von Rockferry einmal genauer an – tolle Idee). Ein wenig störend ist eigentlich nur Duffys oft piepsige Stimme, die in den Höhen ab und zu unangenehm schneidet. Macht aber nichts, denn alles in allem haben wir es mit einem tollen Album zu tun, dass es zwar nicht mit Amy Winehouse aufnehmen kann (schon wieder dieser Vergleich!) aber dennoch durch Kreativität überzeugen kann. Duffy möchte sich übrigens in Richtung Mariah Carey weiterentwickeln. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass das nur ein Witz war. Ach ja: Delayed Devotion ist der Hammer!

O “sucesso” de Amy Winehouse levantou poeira (literalmente) : trouxe de volta à moda os gêneros Jazz e Soul, fato que levou muitas gravadoras a entrarem na onda. O que provavelmente fez com que a artista Duffy, de quem vamos falar, pudesse ter mais sucesso do que o esperado.

A canção Mercy é seu cartão de apresentação, e de cara você vê porque ela praticamente faz sucesso só na Europa ( e na Antena 1, é claro) : o arranjo, que poderia ser confundido com alguma coisa da Aretha Franklin, é extremamente preso ao Jazz, o que ao invés de ajudar, atrapalha. Chamar o Jazz  – os fãs que me perdoem - de repetitivo é quase redundância. Sem contar que, se eu não a tivesse visto por fotos, eu ia achar que era o Pato Donald cantando.

Poco después de la abrumadora llegada de la carismática Amy Winehouse, anunciaban su llegada con un “Mercy” que se hacía irresistible a cualquier oído. Antes, esta chica de origen galés recibio un golpe de manos de su hermana, lo que propició ese tono nasal tan característico.

En 2003 queda segunda en un reality de la tv galesa similiar a OT. Pero es más tarde cuando publica 3 EPs después de haber formado en su adolescencia con bandas locales o haber actuado en shows de su ciudad. Ya en 2007 se decide hacia la grabación de su album de estudio, cuyo compositor y productor es Bernard Butler. Lo demás ya se sabe… Tiene una gran voz pero no es comparable a la siempre polémica heroína del soul. Indudablemente, disfrutaremos de un concierto glamouroso como pocos.

Yesterday I was playing this album in my car, and about a third of the way through opening track “Rockferry,” passenger Fandon the Fun Marshall called it exactly right–”She should do the next James Bond theme song.”

Duffy’s voice is quite good but not amazing, and wisely, she doesn’t try to prove otherwise. She understands her limits and works within them, applying grace and subtlety to the notes in her range. Even on the money shot, the gorgeous album-closer “Distant Dreamer,” she sings it like it is. The vocal is a valiant act of restraint in a string-laden environment that is almost begging for someone to take it over the top. She refrains, and the song sounds all the more human, and all the more wonderful, for it.

Self-awareness can be a bad thing, but not here. Duffy actually sings a song called “Syrup & Honey,” which is one of the most apt song titles I can think of. It’s clearly done with a wink, and a damned cute one at that.

At a minimum, this is a recording of a girl singing British soul songs very well. Some would call it retro; I prefer timeless. This album would have sounded great forty years ago, and it will sound great forty years from now. The production on the excellent, dance-oriented “Mercy” might clue you in, but if wasn’t for that one, you’d have a hard time figuring out when this was recorded if you had never heard it before and happened to be my passenger when I happened to be playing it in my car.

At its best, which is achieved on at least three occasions, Rockferry is terrific. I don’t know if Duffy can pull this trick off again, but I’ll be plunking my money down to find out when the next record is released.

A bad stumble after “Mercy,” the inept “Delayed Devotion,” stops me from rating this half-a-star higher. Bump it up that half-star if you skip that one. I do.

I should add that former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, apparently not content with being involved in two classic albums, was a major collaborator on Rockferry. By all means, keep being restless, Bernie.

Cântăreaţa asta mă înnebuneşte ! I-am ascultat în mare parte melodiile de pe primul album, Rockferry, şi toate sunt super bune, cântate perfect. Partea proastă e că sunt melodii dinalea ce-ţi intră în cap şi rămân acolo, pe fundal, zile întregi.

Ultimul hit – “Rain on Your Parade”. Mai recomand “Distant Dreamer“, “Warwick Avenue” sau “Stepping Stone“.

Ontem [dia 18] rolou a 32º edição Brit Awards comandado por Kylie Minogue e por vários artistas que celebraram o melhor da música britânica. E a sortuda mais celebrada foi a galesa Duff, de 24 anos, que levou para casa três dos quatro prêmios que concorria. A banda Coldplay era outra grande aposta da noite, que também disputava quatro troféus, foi embora sem nenhum. Que pena! kkkkkkkk… O principal já foi dito, agora vamos ao mais interessante… as roupitxas do povo! Veja a seleção dos CelbLooks logo abaixo, começando por Kylie:
Como de costume,  quando uma celebridade é convidada para ser host de uma festa, ela escolhe milhares de figurinos bafônicos para se exibir durante o evento. E Kylie não fez diferente, arrasou no modelão, quer dizer… nos modelões. Foram no total seis belíssimos vestidos. O favorito da noite foi o transpassado tomara que caia very, very, very… gorgeous. Ela esteve linda o tempo inteiro e nada mais a declarar.
Se tem uma coisa que destrói – pois, eu a detesto – é tal da sandália gladiador! Morra sua infeliz! kkkkk… Foi o triste caso de Alexandra Burke a cantora revelação de um reality show inglês, que caprichou no vestido, mas quando chegou na sandália… Enfim, o BlueDress dela tá lindo. Uma outra que cometeu um pequeno erro parecido foi a apresentadora Holly Willoughby com essa bolsa enorme a tiracolo, Minina! Joga now ela para os paparazzi! Sinto muito, mas em  premiação não rola, para mim, NOT! Katy Hello Kitty Perry tá parecendo que foi pro baile funk e deu uma passadinha logo após, lá no BRIT A. Ela é uma mulher fruta, ela a mulher ameixa ♪ kkkkk… E a minha querida Estelle, sou seu fã, mas você está parecendo  uma caixa de presente nesse Dolce&Gabbana kkkkk… 
Chega de avacalhar o povo, né?! Natalie e Pixie com pano sobrando, mas não deixa de ter seu devido glam. Bons looks, mas tenho umas dicas para Pixie: é legal sempre pentiar o cabelo antes de sair de casa, caprichar no fixador e da uma conferida antes de descer da limousine, tá colega?! ‘As meiguinhas’ Duffy, Fearne Cotton – um pouco sem cor, confesso -, Kylie Minogue e Taylor Swift. À propósito, quem não usaria esse vestido lindíssimo da Taylor, Ein!?
E por fim, momento tiete! Sim, amo as meninas do Girls Aloud. Elas venceram a categoria de melhor single, cantaram e ainda por cima se vestiram bem. Muito lindas \o/. Pronto, falei!

Ok, vielleicht nervt meine Duffysucht ein wenig, aber heute ist die etwas einseitige Berichterstattung ausnahmsweise mal erlaubt. Zugegeben ist das Video qualitativ eher im unteren Bereich anzusiedeln, hat wohl jemand vom Fernseher abgefilmt, aber man bekommt das wichtigste mit.

Wie es aussieht, hat Duffy bei den Brit Awards richtig abgeräumt. Gleich 3 Awards wurden der hübschen Walisierin (verdientermaßen) verliehen.

The Brit Awards was on tonight. I haven’t watched the Brits in years. Most of the acts are voted for by pompous music critics who think that ‘out there’ artists should take home awards over popular, more mainstream artists. I was looking forward to seeing Take That’s performance of Greatest Day but I was slightly confused by their chosen theme. It was some kind of homosexual robotic outfit. I’m hoping the way they were dressed was just for the Brits, I’m seeing them at Wembley later on this year and I hope they don’t dress as stupid as that! Luckily, they were performing on a round stage descending from the ceiling to the audience. My ticket is a standing one, so it is good to see that they are likely to have a circular, central stage optimising my viewing pleasure! I believe Kings of Leon deserved their awards, they’ve been a relevant band of 2008 and I wish them well for 2009. I particularly liked that Girls Aloud won the category for Best Single. I love my pop, more so than any other genre. Take That won nothing, but I am glad that one pop group did. Girls Aloud have been going from strength to strength. I give to them more credit than the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls’ fame was like a massive explosion which died down very quickly, after their second album in fact. Girls Aloud’s success has been more consistent, they have released six albums and have released some good, all round pop songs. I have no affinity with all other award winners, some I dislike, others I’m indifferent towards and others I simply think they have a few good tunes. I do think Coldplay were at an injustice for not winning anything. They are a great, solid British band that deserved at least one win. All in all, I believe an award cannot determine how good an artist is and deem the Brit Awards as bullshit.

Soulstar Duffy ist wieder im Studio und arbeitet intensiv an ihrem neuen Album.  Dabei steht ihr wieder ihr Produzent Bernard Butler zur Seite. An den neuen Songs wird angeblich schon seit geraumer Zeit gearbeitet, unbestätigten Quellen zur Folge seit ein paar Jahren (wäre kein Wunder, bedenkt man, dass Duffy auch einige Jahre an “Rockferry” garbeitet hat). Duffy möchte ihren Retrosound beibehalten und diesen zugleich ausarbeiten.
