Our family finally has its first baby girl! My niece, Haven Bella, was born on July 8th of this year – a great birthday date to remember – 7-8-9! We are excited to have a girl join the ‘boys club’ we had going.

Four months have now passed since the glorious date that we all ooo’d and awww’d over little Haven. She is growing bigger by the day, and although still a ‘little baby’ her mom and dad were ready to take the big step and go out for some much needed time together – without children!

Friday was the first night that Mike and Joslyn took a breather from the kiddos and headed out for a nice relaxing dinner for two. My nephew Justice was spending some quality time with Grandpa – and little Haven came to spend the evening in Aunt KK’s arms (that’s me!!!) I have to admit that Aunt KK is not 100% confident with tiny babies. Maybe I am just not completely comfortable, but at 4 months old…I thought I could handle it! The evening (to say the least) had its ups and downs – here is how it unfolded:

6:30
Bye Bye Mommy and Daddy – Hello child that is (supposedly) about to fall asleep…

7:10
40 minutes later – after walking around the house, rocking and singing lullabies to Little Miss Haven, she FINALLY falls asleep

7:11
Carefully laying her on the couch next to me I pop in a movie – ready for an hour and half of quiet bliss

7:53
Haven is awake….Cry….Cry….Cry….

7:53:30
Aunt KK picks up Haven and tries to sooth her – more walking, rocking and singing (did I mention that I am NOT a singer?)

8:00
Dinner Time (Haven is a ‘Baby Wise Baby’ and she knows when it’s time to eat!) I pull out the Dr. Brown’s Bottle and warm the milk…

8:05
Haven is NOT having it! Try as I might this little girl does not love her bottle – go back to walking…

8:12
Haven is still clearly upset and not eating – I am at my wit’s end and praying for Joslyn to walk through that door…

8:13
Haven and Aunt KK say in unison: HELLOOO MOMMY! THANK GOD YOU ARE HERE!

Of course we all survived…and I am sure every parent (and every babysitter!) has experienced nights like this. What are some of the tips you give your sitters – I could really use some!!!!

The definition of stimming: "A jargon term for a particular form of stereotypy, a repetitive bo

The definition of stimming:

"A jargon term for a particular form of stereotypy, a repetitive body movement (often done unconsciously) that self-stimulates one or more senses in a regulated manner. It is shorthand for self-stimulation, and a stereotypy is referred to as stimming under the hypothesis that it has a function related to sensory input."

Often, when someone thinks of the term 'autism' or 'Asperger's', they immediately picture some 'RainManesque' person who spends a lot of their time rocking back and forth. While rocking back and forth is quite common for someone with autism/Asperger's to do, it is not the only stereotypical movement displayed; in fact, it is likely one of the less-commonly performed stims out of them all.

For my entire life, I've performed various types of stims. All of the stimming I've done was and is for one reason — to calm myself down. When I don't stim for lengthy periods of time, I begin to feel strong tension building up inside of me. I need to do something to focus my mind away from 'reality'. During many times of the day, life itself becomes almost unbearable for me; I need to temporarily focus all of my attention on something to rid myself of this tension/anxiety.

Some of my stims include:

. Biting my fingernails and chewing the skin around my fingertips
. Pacing
. Staring and concentrating on something for a lengthy amount of time (I commonly look at paintings or artwork and focus on certain shapes/patterns)

The following are not stims, but simply things people on the autism spectrum are commonly interested in to help them focus their attention away from reality; things to calm them down:

. Video-games (as a kid, I spent a lot of time playing video-games to rid myself of the extreme anxiety I experienced.)
. Use computers (sure, lots of people use computers, but people on the spectrum often are into doing more advanced things like programming which require fairly deep concentration.)

I recommend you read the following blog-post from Gavin Bollard's BlogSpot blog to get more insight into what stimming is like:

I cant wait to make amazing gingerbread houses again. Last year I completely forgot about them, and the year before that I made them out of custard cream biscuits all stuck together with icing it was so adorable. I have just been trying to find a photo of it for about an hour… but nothing

I know I dont smoke, but if I did, it would be for these sexy pink cancer sticks! Oh yes…

I just love bright colours all mixed together. I cant seem to get enough!

And this is possibly the cutest little man I have seen in ages! Gotta get me one of these!

These are just pretty cute. Now I know what to do with all the left over champagne corks at work!

I made yet another fishfinger sandwich for lunch today, along with some extra fish fingers. I took a photo because the sandwich just looked really yummy with the sun on it, and so I could also show off my new mugs from Next. That was some good eating!

I have just purchased Snow Leopard for my Macbook Pro. Currently I am waiting for it to arrive (between 9am-5pm it says on the website) and it is in transit as I write this. It therefore has half an hour left to arrive or this has been a day sitting in waiting for something that will never show up. I know there is a postal strike, but this is coming with UPS, and only from Dartford which isnt that far away. Lets hope that it shows up by the end of this post, like Apple say it will…

If you have read my previous posts you will have noticed that I am becoming increasingly excited about certain plastic rocking chairs I keep finding in photos of peoples homes. And today… I FOUND THEM! For sale in England… Hooray! I am so excited and now I ache because I dont really have the money to afford one right now, but they are just teasing me on the website. Im not sure what the difference in quality these two chairs would be; the cheaper is made of ABS resin, and the more expensive is made of fibreglass. I would go for the cheaper option, obviously, seeing as they look the same! BUT, the cheaper version doesnt come in pink, which would be my ideal colour for this chair. So… do I lump it and get the cheaper one in a different colour, or splash out and get the pink one. Why am I even choosing when I dont have the money laying around for either! Rather annoying really… (left-cheaper/right-expense much)

Look the same to me….

I have also found out how to do finger-knitting. Its so easy! I made a metre and a half in about half an hour today, and I have it hanging over my mirror in the living room. I think I might crochet some blue/green/purple droplet shapes to hang off of it so it makes it look a bit more interesting. Pictures to come.

Yesterday I promised a photo of Pew Pew Pew, our teeny runt hamster, and here she is eating in my hand, and sleeping next to mum (so cute!) :

Well… Its nearly 5pm and no sign of my Snow Leopard delivery; I am not impressed. Just hope it comes tomorrow really! The website says it is in transit for delivery today, so I dont understand it never mind.

This evening I am going to drop off two of the baby boy hamsters with Ryan, to our mates Vawn and Lauren. I hope they have fun in their new home!

Ok time is up on this delivery! Damn them…

– e “The Fixer”.

Sir James Paul McCartney

, MBE (born 18 June 1942), is an English singer-songwriter, poet, composer, multi-instrumentalist, entrepreneur, record and film producer, painter, and animal rights and peace activist. Formerly of The Beatles and Wings, McCartney is the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music.[1][2][3][4] McCartney gained worldwide fame as a member of The Beatles, alongside John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. McCartney and Lennon formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships and wrote some of the most popular songs in the history of rock music.

Linda Louise McCartney (Eastman, September 24 1941 – April 17 1998) was an American photographer, musician and animal rights activist. Her father and mother were Lee Eastman and Louise Sara Lindner Eastman, heiress to the Lindner Department Store fortune.

At a young age I was brought into the rock and roll by the beatles, rolling stones and then Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. But my best is Paul McCartney…I was struck by his song…Let it Be…this was the beginning to a long road of rock and roll with Paul McCartney and Linda Louise McCartney.

With Paul McCartney’s determination to bring his own songs and poetry into the entrepreneur spotlight was a risky – but only if you didn’t know what you were doing – Paul McCartney knew exactly what he was doing. With the determination of his be-loved wife Linda McCartney, Paul established his own rock and roll world. Expressing his inner soul to the world.

In my teens I would scramble out to the record stores to get his first edition of these famous albums :
1. McCartney

2. McCartney II

3. Ram

4. Red Rose Speed Way

5. Wings across America

6. Wild Life

7. Wings at the Speed of Sound

8. Off the Ground

It was a time to release my inner soul within rock and roll. Paul McCartney brought us his very artistic gift to the rest of the world. His expression of music brings your soul alive. Paul McCartney proved his ability way and above the era of the beatles, but he never forgot his tidings. I have never personally met Paul McCartney, but it would indeed be a great celebration if I had the honor of meeting him. As a struggling young lad I used my earned money very carefully – so when I bought Paul McCartney’s music I was gifted with every lasting music straight from his heart.

Music and Art is the most expressive release of anyones inner soul. Expression is the root of mankind and without it – where exactly would we be.

Maybe…within the Grace of God I may be able have the chance to meet Paul McCartney. Realistically though, it may never be…well…in this life time… we may meet at the Grace of God.., we never know the wonderful world of grace.

I will close this blog by saying “Thank you Paul McCartney” for bringing my soul alive with Rock and Roll…

Just a short post today as I am shattered from work last night and I have to go back for my shift tonight in an hour or so. SO…. had a Pizza Hut 7 Sins Meat pizza today… rather nice I must say. The only disappointing bit on it is the steak, its just not quite right, oh and the chicken is a bit too salty… but its ok!

I found a website called Apartment Therapy. They have some amazing house tours, which just inspire me to design and buy new things for the house! I have so many interior design photos stored on my laptop now it is ridiculous. Here are a few of my favourites (most of which are from Apartment Therapy I just cant find the links for all of them) :

1. I would just love one of these rocking chairs. They feature in a lot of these houses in various colours, but I dont know where to get one from!

2. The shelving on the right of this image is similar to ours but in black, and I like the use of the various compartments.

3. Again this rocking chair, and lots of lovely colours. A house has to have colour!

4. This house is just so simple yet stylish. The colour combinations are beautiful. I love the purple chair.

5. Again with the colours, and it also reminds me that I need to add more artwork to the walls.

6. The layout of this house is ridiculous. All the blocks which makeup storage are also stairs to the top gallery/bedroom, and the right hand side with the baby area. One of the large drawers underneath this space pulls out and makes a gorgeous play pen for the baby. AGAIN with the rocking chair!

7. This house is just beautiful. A bit too modern for my liking but I love the gallery space, and the use of shelving as the partisan wall.

8. The crafts and colours in this house is so me!

9. Another rocker, and lots of art on the walls

10. I love the idea of blackboard paint on the walls. I have a tin of it and I am planning on making a cute chalk notice board for the hallway. I also want one of those things thats doodling on it in the picture…

11. This kitchen is simple and light. I have always wanted plants to be a feature of a kitchen.

12. You cant really go wrong with the gorgeous Japanese style homes.

13. Beautiful accessories in unusual colours, when put together actually make sense!

.

So this is the kind of thing I like. Whether I can achieve it is something else, but it is always nice to have aspirations for your home. This has turned into a longer post than I thought… off to work I go!

Nejmah, a Greco spotting on friday afternoon, is the definition of style. As soon as I layed my eyes on her, I knew, she would be my 1st Cairo Muse. And she was excited to pose for me!! The cute confident star was rocking the look by mixing colors, prints, and textures. Her outfit is the definition of a perfect transition from summer to fall; from her short sleeved velour jacket, to the purple leggings, and printed rain boots. Did you notice the colorful gum ball bracelet and bright green hair clip! According to her mom, she dresses herself, so I can’t wait to see this young stylista grow up and be featured again as a Cairo Muse.

With apologies to Bill Haley and The Comets, rocking around the clock could be one of the most effective personal measures for relaxation and pain relief one can employ. If Bill Haley were alive he would be 84 years old and might benefit from a session of rocking in a rocking chair. Mothers from the beginning of time have recognized the calming, relaxation and pain relief afforded to them and their sick or upset infants with rocking. The classic image is the mother rocking with the sick baby on her shoulder singing softly; “Hush, little baby don’t you cry. Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.”

In the late 1980’s Barry Wyke, MD set the Physical Therapy world abuzz with his presentation in Atlanta, Georgia at the Annual Conference of the American Physical Therapy Association on articular and joint neurology mechanoreceptors. That was the first time I heard of “rocking chair therapy” as a means of pain relief.

There is a physiological basis for this ancient practice. These mechanoreceptors are more concentrated in the cervical region (neck), but every joint has them. Briefly, the body produces endogenous opiates with movement and positional changes. Another example of this effect is the runners high, but a simple rhythmical rocking can be very powerful. The effects are a general feeling of euphoria, relaxation and pain relief. This combined with deep abdominal breathing plus imaging are very powerful tools to help one relax, combat pain and discomfort.

People with chronic pain that have difficulty getting a good night’s sleep would benefit from a rocking chair near the bed. Breaking up the tossing and turning associated with insomnia with fifteen to twenty minutes of gentle rhythmical rocking combined with deep abdominal breathing should help about as much as any measure for relaxation, pain relief and return to sleep.

If you want to see the beautiful memories of a rocking chair see the following: http://hadassahsabo.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/rocking-to-a-different-tune/

Once a while back I was really into making rocking chairs. Although I would really like to make more

Once a while back I was really into making rocking chairs. Although I would really like to make more of them but my focus has temporarily gone elsewhere. Well, some of you know me from my time in the TWW Chat Room and the forum there, well I can be a little…..precise…..anally so at times. In drilling the holes for the spindles and legs I made a slight discovery, compound angles are a pain to drill on a drill press with a table that only tilts left and right.

I did find an answer, though it lead me back to my high school Trig books. Ok well it lead me to Google where I refreshed on sine, cosine, and tangent. I always forget sine is adjacent/hyp, or is it opposite/hyp. I know it isn’t adjacent/opposite, because that is tangent, or is that opposite/adjacent. Crap, now I have to reGoogle again:

Trig.....aaaaaahhhh

Sine:
Sin A = opposite/hypotenuse
Sin A = a/h

Cosine:

Cos A = adjacent/hypotenuse
Cos A = b/h

Tangent:

Tan A = opposite/adjacent
Tan A = a/b

Then I thought to myself that when all is said and done a compound angle is just two angles in a rigid 90 degree plane. Well instead of two angles in planes that are 90 degrees off (7 degrees to the left, and 10 degrees to the rear), why not use one angle that is based on another angle. It actually works, but takes a bit of computations. Instead of measuring an angle back and an angle off to the side, all from 90 degree axises, you can measure one angle off 90 degrees from dead center and then measure the actual angle from that point. Well that can be a royal pain to figure out…..but I did it the first time though.

Then I went to my SketchUp book of tricks to come up with a better solution. Always a better way, right? Well a 1/4 sheet of Ply or MDF and 18″ of piano hinge later I had my better way.

Now unfortunately for you the reader I have already made mine. At some point I am going to blog a project as I make it and you’ll get more play by play photos. But it is all pretty simplistic and the SketchUp drawing that you can download should give you enough insight to make your own with little difficulty. But you do have to be precise.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to calculate the angles. Grab a calculator. Use the 8″ from the hinge pivot to the inner inset in the equation: Tan(desired angle) * 8″ = measurement from the bottom of the inner inset to the lower table. From there you are going to need to either convert to approximate fractions, generally to the nearest 1/16″ or at most 1/31″, or just use the decimal values.

Sample Angle

To reduce the number of times that you have to do this you might want to mark the common angles as you calculate them on the side. To download the SketchUp model click the below graphic.

Sketchup Model

The first step in this is to cut the top and bottom tables. Simple enough, the top can be whatever size is needed for your situation. I used a fairly large table of 24″ x18″ . But if you alter the distance between the pivot point (where the hinge is) and the inner cutout section you will need to adjust the above equation: tan(A) * 8″ = lifted distance, where “A” is the desired angle. Get it? It’s really not that hard if you have a calculator handy. You are also going to need to adjust the lower table size so try not to make it too hard.

Next on the list of things to do is the smaller table that will fit onto the drill press table. This will need to be about 14 13/16″ long and 18″ wide and it helps a lot if it is a perfect rectangle. If you make a wider table you may want to widen this, if you make a narrower table you are going to need to reduce the width. The idea is to not have the lower table too narrow that you need a flashlight to see your settings and not too wide to prevent you from lets say clamping your work piece down on the sides. This section you are going to need to align perfectly parallel to the drill press table’s back edge. But when you align it leave room to see the angle dial of the press’s table. You are going to need to bolt this section down. Mark, drill, and inset holes for bolts and washers to hide flush to the top surface.

Then check your piano hinge for its thickness and depth, and create a rabbet on the front edge of the top of the small table. Alternately you can reverse the piano hinge and fix it to the front edge of the board, this would probably be a preferred method but one that I didn’t put in the SketchUp plans. Using this method would depend on the depth of your piano hinge. If, for example, you have a piano hinge that has the holes set at 1″ from the pivot point, this isn’t going to work on a 3/4″ table unless you drill more holes. But if your piano hinge is only 3/4″ in depth and the holes are about 1/2″ out you’re good to go.

Piano Hinge

If you have followed the plans religiously (small chuckle inserted here) you should be able to find the center of the inside edge of the top and bottom tables (the edge that is going to be closest to the drill press shaft). Mark and line them up, then carefully arrange the tables to mark the holes needed to affix the top table to the hinge. I found that carpet tape works great for this. Drill pilot holes for the screws and permanently mount the two tables together.

Now we are getting good. The last piece you are going to need to cut are the sides. I did this out of two 10 1/8″ x 12 3/16″ pieces. The best way to explain this puppy is to download the model, you’ll get the idea.

Angle Set

From the point where the line insects the bottom of the piece, mark 2 1/4″ up. This will mark the starting point of your arc cut. From the point where the line intersects the top of the piece, mark 8 1/4″ out and 1/4″ down. This will mark the ending point of your arc cut. Mark lines to outline a 1/2″ wide arcing cut from one point to the other keeping the 8 1/4″ radius throughout. Then cut the arc using a 1/2″ straight bit with a router (for you galoots out there, time to dust off the coping saw). Don’t forget to keep 1/4″ of the piece at the top for stability and 1 11/16″ at the bottom. And the last step is to cut off about a 10″ from the bottom to the top. This is just to get added material out of the way. Do this for both side pieces.

From here it is just assembly work. A carriage bolt and wing nut on both sides to hold the angle. Cut or route a recess for sacrificial inserts plus some mounting holes to the drill press. Maybe add a T-track.

Sacrificial Inserts

I think this will give you the general idea and a starting point to add your own spins on this. Mainly it is all in the plan and time on this is about to run out so I am hitting the Post button.

What is Tin Toy??
Tin toy is great gift to granny as it is an old fashion toy. Although it can be for a child, adults will appreciate these items far more, and so adults are the ones whom these toys are really for. They are no impact-proof, wear resisting items like the modern plastic toys; instead they are made of metal sheet, and operate by a delicate wind up mechanism. Just as some of us might remember them from our childhood, these items don’t stand up too well to use and abuse, and better belong to the display case, where they serve as reminder of our childhood.

Rocking,

As I begin this post it is 11:33 PM, and only 14 days and 27 minutes remaining until the official release of Kid Cudi’s debut album: Man on the Moon: End of Day. And I’ll be honest…. I’m a little bit excited. With many of the singles officially released (Day N Night, Make Her Say, Sky Might Fall), we already know this one’s gonna be a banger. However, in recent weeks, a plethora of videos have surfaced of Cudder himself previewing songs from the new album. But up until this point, pretty much nothing has been official as to what will or will not be on the album. Until now.

With the album cover finally ready (the cover design is what made the release date get pushed back), we also finally got a tracklisting. Instead of just listing tracks, the album is going to go in “acts”, like a day out of Cudi’s life. Here’s how the album’s gonna play out, complete with production credits:

ACT 1 – THE END OF DAY:

In addition to the tracklisting and production credits, our good friends over at Amazon Germany leaked thirty seconds of each song on the album. The good folks at Dat New Cudi put all of these into one big 7 minute preview of the album, and I’m already feeling it. Click the link below to download the 7 minute compilation of the Cudi snippets.

ROCK! As I’m finishing up this post, there’s officially only 14 days and 9 minutes left until the release. Awesome. If all of this snippety goodness can’t hold you over until the album release, here is a funny and probably illegal video to chew on.

It’s my new name! Okay, so all of this started on Thursday. I don’t have the chat log, so I’ll explain. Me and Bored (Imo) were talking on msn, and I said I needed a cool new message. She was giving me ideas while filming a video, but after looking on various websites, I couldn’t find one. But then, I had a brilliant plan! After a bit of typing, I showed Imo my new message.

“No I don’t want to enter a Personal Message thanks “

I thought that was GENIUS. So then we talked some more…and then Imo said she would buy me a packet of Rowntrees Randoms…then the rest of the conversation involved me saying about how much I loved them…I got my mum to buy me a packet somewhere…Ledbury? Kidderminster? I can’t remember…but anyway. I ate two jelly trucks – a green and a yellow – then I dropped the packet on the floor before I could eat anymore. I thought it would be funny to start fake – crying, seeing as no – one knew me…anyway…so I’ve only tasted two Jelly Trucks. So I’m dedicating my…msn name to them

Rest in piece (or pieces) my dear Rowntrees Randoms. I will always love you

At the moment I am sat on a ferry. I’m not a fan of boats. And this one is swaying far more than I would like. I can feel the bottom of my stomach swing right as my body swings left (thank goodness my chair’s tied to the floor), It’s the Great British Summer and this is the Irish Sea: the ferry is en-route from Heysham, on the Lancashire coast, to Douglas, on the Isle of Man. We’re going to the Isle of Man for a wedding.

A couple of months ago we were looking how to get to the IOM. Flights were pretty fast, but not necessarily cheap. And flying certainly ain’t the most environmentally friendly way to travel. Conscious of our carbon footprint, we looked up alternative routes. For a summer fare of £103 each (it’s cheaper off summer-peak) we were able to get on any train from London Euston with a through-ticket to the Isle of Man. The IOM Steam Packet Company’s ferries go from two ports that more or less connect with the trains: our outward journey was a 09:30 am train from Euston, and a change at Lancaster which took us directly to Heysham port (directly to the ferry terminal). The (relatively slow, unfortunately) ferry to Douglas is where I am writing from now. The route back (with a ferry that takes half the time) is via Liverpool.

I’m looking forward to my first trip to the Isle of Man, although I must say I know very little around it. Looking around me as I type I can see a combination of bored staycationers, bored homegoers and northern families taking a weekend trip. It might be that boredom (well, it’s a long trip and a heavily swaying boat – you may not want to look at the horizon) which means that people are looking at me, or it might be the fact that I’m wearing clothes of a far more joyful hue than most of the people on the ferry. It may also be that – at least as I understand it – homosexuality has not long been accepted on the IOM (maybe it still isn’t). That provincial nervousness has been nagging me since our arrival in Lancaster – that nervousness of looking out of place, odd, strange, overtly gay… who knows. But regardless, and despite of this, the trip to the IOM, marking the start of my holiday season, is an exciting one. Seeing friends getting married is always an exciting thing (and would be even more exciting if summer actually came to the Irish Sea in mid-August).

I am sure I will tweet and blog my thoughts soon enough…

Hear ye, hear ye! Rub-a-dub-dub! Jingle jangle!

Mark ye calendars, for on the eve of the 22nd, King Killer be holdin’ a most savory affair! Upon the quadruple-wide plank we call a stage, a collection of merry minstrels will soothe our spirits as we swill a variety of store-bought meads and wines! The gate opens at the strike of 7, and the music will follow shortly!

So good morrow, cousin. We will see you upon the early Virgo!

We know you want to be a rock star, so put down the hairbrush and pick up a guitar! In this chick-friendly guide to the world of rock’n'roll, Hopper narrows in on everything you’ll need to know to make it in the music world. She offers advice on picking an instrument (or using what you already play), writing lyrics, soundproofing, booking your first gig, recording demos, and how to develop a stage presence. Other useful information includes descriptions of the different types of microphones, promotion advice, and how to build personal connections. Hopper even touches on how to prevent interband bickering and conflicts. The book is geared towards teenage girls, but women of all ages can profit from the author’s expertise, and the further reading suggestions, listening lists, and inspiring quotes from successful musicians she includes. There’s also an additional, full-color, glossy pull-out timeline of “A Superstar Century in the Sisterhood of Rock’n'Roll.” Read this book and start rocking! Even the seasoned musician will find this to be an enjoyable read.
