If I could be anything, it would be an echidna.

Since I can’t, I try my best to be a rational human being.

And sometimes, as we all know, the status quo sucks. Even as freshman speech students, university pupils are sometimes required (as I was here at SDSU) to give a speech on “a topic going against the status quo,” to paraphrase.

To have the freedom to be different. What a wonderful thing that would be.

Can’t get married if you’re a gay in New York. When I think New York, I think Nathan Lane and singing, and two people of the same sex can’t get together and live the way they want? Maybe “we the people” should reclaim the presently State-owned power over marriages in our country. Remove mob rule.

But that would be “extremist.” On the fringe, living like Fonda in Easy Rider. (Not some of the more questionable actions, but the leather jacket.)

Lew Rockwell touched on this subject today. His words motivated this post, which I’ve been meaning to address for a while now.

Last spring I read an issue of City Pages, the “alternative weekly” (the more I see these types of publications, the more I think they’re simply sharp-looking ad pits) down in Minneapolis. Despite my qualms with the paper, normally I enjoy flipping through the newsprint pages, catching up on what is down in the cities. But the issue I happened to grab from a grocery was the late May edition with the Michele Bachmann comic.

The comic ran through the common attacks against Bachmann – she’s anti-gay, called for “anti-American” investigations, etc. All of these are worthy of criticism. But what got me was the incessent use of the word “extremist” in the City Pages piece.

It charged other publications in the Twin Cities area with being too accepting of Bachmann and not calling her out for being “extremist.”

They could just as easily criticized her for being a conservative hypocrit and changing her tune now that Democrats have more federal power – a fact that rears its head in this (pretty good) interview with Bachmann in the City Pages from a few weeks ago. The gist: she loves a tight fiscal policy, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of funding unjust, trillion-dollar wars.

[City Pages does print some great pieces - see some love for Favre here.]

And to just let everyone know even more that I’m not a fan, here’s Ryan McCracken on LRC, whom I agree with, on Bachmann:

In a recent comment, I noted that Bachmann, who thinks it’s fine to drop bombs on Afghani toddlers, didn’t seem so bad when she was speaking well of Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed bill. I also noted in the comment that Bachmann had taken a page from the Dick Cheney playbook and labeled her opponents “Anti-American”—which is the epithet of choice for hysterical neo-cons like David Frum and Cheney, for whom “patriotism” is always the last refuge.

Early on in his great text On Liberty, John Stuart Mill praises the outer elements of society:

…reflecting persons perceived that when society is itself the tyrant – society collectively over the separate individuals who compose it – its means of tyrannizing are not restricted to the acts which it may do by the hands of its political functionaries.

And, a few sentences later:

There is a limit to the legitimate interference of collective opinion with individual independence; and to find that limit, and maintain it against encroachment, is as indispensable to a good condition of human affairs as protection against political despotism.

The freeks and geeks of society innovate, assist when others ignore, smile when the rest scoffe, keep things interesting and should be a cherished part of our world.

On the entire subject of extremism, I think Rockwell’s words from today will suffice:

This is the non-argument smear of right and left, media and politics. But what dastardly and anti-intellectual baloney. Do you disagree with both ends of the Obama-McCain allowed spectrum? Good for you, you extremist.

.

1. Frank Schweikhardt- Life But No More It’s kind of a no contest pick for me this year. This

1. Frank Schweikhardt- Life But No More

It’s kind of a no contest pick for me this year. This record has everything I want in a record. It is subtle, yet gorgeously textured. It is free of pretense and loaded with melancholy, depth, and tasty licks. Frank’s guitar playing might be reminiscent of Sun Kil Moon, but this record steps beyond anything Kozelek has done. The added instrumentation is perfectly layered; there’s not too much, and not too little. The sounds on this record are near flawless as well as the aesthetic. I couldn’t be more excited about a new record. This one is tops!

2. Julie Doiron- I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day

This record came out in January I think and I knew right then that it would be either my favorite record of the year, or darn close. Julie’s songwriting just keeps getting better and better and this record flows perfectly from the jarring riffs of “Spill Yer Lungs”, to the syrupy fuzz of “Consolation Prize” and on to the cutesy confession of “It’s Always Nice To Come Home”. Julie has made several GREAT records (i.e. Goodnight Nobody and Woke Myself Up) but this is a great place to start. Her songwriting somehow gets better and better.

3. husband&wife- Dark Dark Woods

It’s hard to imagine a year where Dark Dark Woods isn’t my absolute favorite record of the year. Each song on this record has a life span of its own. The emotional range that is found on even one song is vast enough to make just about any songwriter blush. Standout tracks are all of them. Not joking. (plus XRA Records are doing a buy-one-get-one-free the whole month of December) WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

4. Mount Eerie- Wind’s Poem

Last year Mount Eerie put out Lost Wisdom which was not only my favorite record of the year, but one of my favorite records of all time. I was pretty guarded against liking this record because it is SO much heavier and intense than Lost Wisdom. I often have a hard time really enjoying a record if I felt really connected to the band’s previous record. This one breaks the mold. It will split you open with its brutality, but it somehow carries Phil Elverum’s signature ennui and softness.

5. Capybara- Try Brother

This was easily the biggest surprise of the year for me. I worked at a camp the summer after my sophomore year of high school. One of the dudes I worked with was this dude named Mark. Mark was one of the coolest, funniest, and warmest guys I had ever met (have ever met) and we became BFFs. After the summer was over, Mark and I tried to stay in contact but I never see him again. Fast forward to 2009 and Mark and I talk again and Mark has a band named Capybara. Mark’s band is going to be your favorite band very soon. You won’t be able to resist it. Check out the song “The Wimp.” Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

6. Grizzly Bear- Veckatimest

7. Metavari- Be One of Us and Hear No Noise

8. Mos Def- The Ecstatic

9. The Dirty Projectors- Bitte Orca

UPDATE:
I somehow forgot to include 2 records which are easily up there in the Top 10 range. They are Elephant Micah’s Exiled Magicians (what a great record!) and Vollmar’s Tell The Dirt. Man I don’t know how I forgot them. They are both so good. You should listen to those too. Here’s a few tracks. The EM isn’t on Exiled Magician’s, but it’s my favorite of his. The Vollmar track is off of a 12″ vinyl that put together a couple of his old EPs. Enjoy

Dave LaBelle’s four greatest influences are Rembrandt, Norman Rockwell, John Steinbeck, and Je

Dave LaBelle’s four greatest influences are Rembrandt, Norman Rockwell, John Steinbeck, and Jesus. But LaBelle is not a painter, a writer, or a priest.

LaBelle, a photojournalist, spoke at Elon Wednesday night in the interactive media floor of Powell.

Originally from western Kentucky, LaBelle left his home in California and has been on a speaking tour since the second week of September of this year. His wife, two sons, two dogs, and guinea pig joined him.

LaBelle’s talk included two parts: in the first, he highlighted the importance of TLC–timing, light and composition. In the second, he share his personal story, philosophy and life statement.

When LaBelle was a young photojournalist, everything was interesting. His keen eye and talent presented him–at 20 years old–to travel the world shooting sports. After much internal debate, LaBelle turned down the offer.

“I wanted, needed to do more than take pretty pictures, ” LaBelle said. “I wanted, needed to tell stories that help people.”

In California, LaBelle suggested that the newspaper he work at begin doing a piece on the homeless. His inspiration were the “Adopt Me” pieces that newspapers typically do on cats or dogs that need homes. Typically, when these stories are published, soon afterward, the animals are adopted.

The newspaper began publishing a piece entitled “Hard Times” every other week.

As LaBelle did the piece each week, he began to identify his vocation.

“I realized my responsibility to change people’s lives for the better,” LaBelle said.

LaBelle shared a story about a college-aged woman named Samantha. A part-time student with a full-time job, Samantha was homeless and lived in her car. After her story was published in the paper, a man called asking about her. He offered her an extra room in his home. “I don’t know what God looks like. . .maybe she is what God looks like,” the man said.

Yet, certainly, not all photographers or photographs highlight positive stories. “The world is good and evil,” LaBelle said. “For whatever reason, most people focus on the evil.”

“I choose to celebrate the good,” LaBelle said. “I want to celebrate the goodness of the human spirit as it has been demonstrated to me.”

Through experiences, LaBelle has learned not only about human nature in general, but also himself and his views on his career.

“I learned photojournalism is a universal language. Today, you are learning a language,” he said. “Who will you speak to? What will you say?”

Múm’s video for Rhubarbidoo (off Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy, their latest album) is one of the most re-enchanting videos that I’ve seen for a long time. If, as Max Weber has argued, Enlightenment rationalization, especially as it manifests itself in the bureaucratized capitalism of Western society, results in a disenchanted world where we are locked in an “iron cage” of social alienation and meaningless production, surely the 20th-century fascination with fantasy, science fiction, and the imaginative worlds brought to life by animation effectively functions as a kind of antidote. Rhubarbidoo is the work of Jason Malcolm Brown and Aya Yamasaki Brown, a pair of illustrator/animators who seem to specialize in re-enchantment. Their Overture project is just as otherworldly and beautiful as Rhubarbidoo and also foregrounds a represented natural space inhabited by creatures that are not of this world and yet, in their alien guises, somehow end up appearing as natural as nature itself.

Early 20th-century animation is rife with the idea of bringing things to life — not only inanimate objects like household objects or urban spaces, but also nature itself in a special kind of re-animation where life is brought back to life. Disney’s 1932 cartoon Flowers and Trees is a perfect example of this type of animation. It seems fair to wonder whether or not the deep fascination with nature evinced in these early animations is actually symptom of a society that is rapidly becoming so urbanized and industrialized that direct contact with the natural world has become a thing of the past. In this case the ability of animation to bring this world to life as ’second nature’ is deeply ironic since it’s an artifact of the industrial revolution — the toothed-gear — that allows for the existence of the stop-motion technique in the first place. There are more sophisticated readings of this dynamic that are possible as well, of course. Marx would probably say that what we see when we see cups and saucers singing in Disney animation is the voice of alienated labor expressing itself in another register; the Adorno and Horkheimer of Dialectic of Enlightenment, on the other hand, might view the re-animation of nature as a kind of mystificatory screen that serves to block the fact that the animistic stage of society is long since dead and instead there is only the fact of nature as a purely objectified resource for human exploitation (including the pleasurable exploitation of nature in its cartoon form).

MGM’s Honeyland is a fantastic case study for the idea that animation that seems to be about natural space is actually about the social unconscious that’s at work behind the scenes. The cartoon begins as a kind of pastoral idyll; the bee society is figured as a classic rural community with an economy based on cultivation and gathering. By the middle of the 1850s, however, the mechanization of agriculture had already started in the United States — the McCormick reaper, the threshing machine, and a practical mowing machine were all in use well before even the invention of the horse-drawn combine in the 1880s. By 1935, when Honeyland was made, agriculture in the U.S. was, for all practical purposes, fully industrialized. The kind of rural life envisioned in the cartoon — a life of pleasant labor and natural bounty — was already nothing but a nostalgic fantasy. This nostalgic fantasy, however, can’t maintain itself and soon we’re introduced to a second fantasy — the hive as happy factory. At this point the (worker) bees are still depicted as deeply content, and they obviously have a large amount of autonomy and free time for pleasure. It’s toward the end of the cartoon, when the spider attacks, that the social unconscious reveals itself in a manner that’s a bit more sinister. What started off as a pastoral idyll has now devolved into industrialized militarism — the bees are controlled en masse via the electronic call of the centralized public announcement system and form themselves into single living klaxon within which all individuation has completely disappeared. This may seem like a stretch, but perhaps it’s not as much of a stretch if you consider that the rationalization of industrial production has its roots in the standardized manufacture of interchangeable rifle parts.

All of these anxieties about the role of human agency within the highly commercialized and industrialized landscape that we’ve erected around ourselves and come to inhabit are at the forefront of this brilliant montage that combines scenes from the Fleischer Studio’s 1939 animated version of Gulliver’s Travels and stock footage of the construction of what I think must be the World Trade Center buildings. The way in which Rockwell’s video for Beholden juxtaposes the Lilliputians with scenes of the construction of the WTC raises the question of whether or not we have, in fact, created something that we can’t control. The image at the end of the video is the frontispiece of Thomas Hobbes’s 1651 treatise, Leviathan, which argues for the total control of (a willing) society by an absolute sovereign. Ending the video with this image makes clear that the question being raised is one of control and sovereignty; as a society we may have the ability to construct wonders, but in the end isn’t it those wonders that control us? Clearly there is another version of Weber’s iron cage at work here.

Of course, it would be ridiculous to subscribe to the view that somehow all attempts to re-enchant the world are, in the final analysis, nothing but an empty compensation for the fact that the disenchantment of the world we know has been made complete. There are always gaps and fissures where enchantment can happen, despite the pessimism of theorists like Weber and Adorno. The excess in homo ludens will always escape, at least partially, the clasp of the iron cage. The force of play and invention, the possibility to explore and investigate new social potentialities and possibilities, is at least as much of a feature of any creative work as our inability to escape the social unconscious that must inform it in at least some way. The playful space of vegetable fantasy in Rhubarbidoo is one form that this type of exploration may take, but another form that may be more directly useful for raising questions about the type of society that we might someday want to become can be found in lengthier works of animated fantasy and speculative fiction. Although it’s not a particularly incisive film when it comes to unpacking the deep-seated contradictions of society as we know it, René Laloux’s 1973 film Fantastic Planet does a remarkable job of thematizing the human propensity to resist totalizing systems of control, while at the same expressing the force of the imagination at play in the form of the wild and surreal images that explode across the alien landscape presented in the film.

This video for Múm’s song “They Made Frogs Smoke ’til They Exploded” is by Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, and it embodies the idea of play in deeply interesting ways. Firstly, the video is about child’s play and as such is as much about violently exploratory creative destruction as it is about the wonder of discovery. Childhood feelings of powerlessness — of literally being overcome and torn apart by overwhelming emotional states — are expressed through images of disembodied limbs, bodies being opened up and bleeding, and animals that are both menacing and at the same time objects to be cut open and destroyed. The play expressed in the first part of the video is dark and indicates thetransference and acting out of violent emotions onto a creative stage that’s filled with blood and crumpled paper. And yet, as with all childhood imaginings, the cat that loses its head is able to be magically stitched back together and return to life. The crux of this video, for me, is the sequence with the child holding up the drawing of a swan. The image of the swan is filled with swathes of brilliant color at the same moment at the child’s teeth fall out, precipitating a full-scalerain of teeth. The dream of teeth falling out is, of course, classically supposed to indicate a fear of the loss of control. And yet, at the same time, the falling out of baby teeth is one marker of our entry into adulthood. In this sequence the creative and wild imagination of childhood, including all of the horrors that come along with it, is represented as the necessary basis for the move to aesthetic maturity. After this scene the types of creative images that appear are much more benign — flowers emerging from the swan’s mouth, leaves filling the soul-space of a child, and paper that turns into butterflies that fly away. Perhaps the most delightful aspect of this video is the use of common classroom materials — those things we mostassociate with childhood and its attendant confusions and power struggles — as the medium through which the question of childhood imagination is realized. It may be the case that as a whole our society has veered far from any real contact and understanding with nature — we may have become too good at making frogs explode — but there’s a second nature at work in all of these videos, a second nature that demands a space for play and exhibits an irrepressible desire to resist the final isolation of total alienation.

Think about this: There is only one reason, one group, one entity that saves the image above from the scrap heap of the historically laughable and horrifically ridiculous. No matter what your religion or ethnicity, only one small slice of humanity saved your tail section, especially in America, from being on the endangered list. Given recent (and sometimes not so recent) history, virtually every ethnic, racial, political, and religious segment of the global village has found refuge in the silent arms of the United States Military. Doubt it? If the Nazis had had their way, all Jews, gays, blacks, Native Americans, and in general non-Aryan would be dead… Between the early and late 1900s (not to mention the Marshall Plan in between), Europe would probably still be a smoldering ruins. What would have happened to China if we acquiesced and gave the Japanese the petroleum they so desperately wanted to continue their vicious expansionism in 1941? What of South Korea? The Philippines? What of the USSR?

In short, where would this world be without the United States Marine Corp, the United States Army, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, and the United States Coast Guard?

Well, we wouldn’t be eating turkey.

So today whether you are with family or friends, eating a feast or serving a feast, please remember our servicemen and women as you give thanks for all the blessings this great country has bestowed upon us all.

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Mal 3:10

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Giving Thanks, what Thanksgiving means to me. How many memories do we have about Thanksgiving? For me it was always the smells from my Mom’s kitchen. Roasted turkey, sweet potatoes, fresh baked bread, and pumpkin pie. And even though I didn’t like collards, I knew that when I smelled that stench, Thanksgiving was near. To smell those aromas now takes me back to wonderful memories of aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends, just everyone crammed into our small little house on Gilbert Street. No one was ever left out. If my mother knew of anyone who was without a place to go they would be lovingly forced to come to our home for a Thanksgiving meal. Before the meal everyone was talking and catching up at once. The roar was deafing. Kids were running from room to room, babies were crying, football could be heard on the TV. But it all came to a holy silence as we prayed and thanked God for His mercy, love and the table before us.

Mom’s menu was not quite a normal one. We had the traditional turkey, and trimmings, but also there was a buffet of roast, ham, country style steak, fried chicken, black-eyed peas, potato salad, banana pudding and on and on. Oh how I’d love to sit once again around that table to experience the joy and love of my parents.
Preacher Upchurch has said it many times from the pulpit but those memories are the things that really count in this life. God, family and others should be our focus. It’s hard to keep those in mind as we hear every day about the tough times we face in our country. If we focus on the troubles in our lives we may forget to be thankful.

God tells us in Psalm 100:4-5
“Enter into His gates with Thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.”

So take time this year to give thanks to God for His blessings on your life, for your salvation, your family, your friends, and your health.

Ok, so here is the final session of 2009….

As usual, there’s a good slab of fresh drum & bass, this month from artists such as Spectrasoul, Blu Mar Ten, Rockwell and more. Following on from last month, there’s a little bit of Bat For Lashes too.

Also, in keeping with the diverse nature of these mixes, I’ve included a bit of 70s Underground Disco from Two Man Sound, and a Fender Rhodes jazz-funk anthem courtesy of Gil Scott Heron. A special thanks must be given to DJ DMT for sourcing the Edú Lobo track for me. I’m very grateful, I love that song!
