Hello everyone. I’m Bayonetta concept designer Ikumi Nakamura.

I was wondering if you had heard about the Rodin’s Selection soundtrack you get with Bayonetta? What you didn’t know, and I am here to tell you about, is the strange set of circumstances that occurred as we set off to produce this bonus item.

Years ago… There was a phone. In front of me.

RODIN
Hey. Ikumi. I’ve got a job for you.

IKUMI
Huh? Who is this!? No solicitors!!

RODIN
I’m a bartender… In a wretched hive of
scum and villainy. I heard you got some
skills, and I want you to design my menu.
You gotta make it… Dangerous. And Hot.

*click* *beep beep beep*

And then phone call ended.

A few days later, I found myself in one of America’s grimiest cities. Searching around, I found a witch’s seal on the floor in front of me. I stood on it, then collapsed, as it felt as though my entire body was being dragged away.

That is when I realized where I was…

RODIN
Welcome, Ikumi.

IKUMI
Well, you said I had a job to do.
I thought to myself, “Even though this guy is
bald as the night as long, he’s got a real
presence about him. Kinda like Kamiya-san….”

RODIN
I can hear people’s thoughts, and I sure
as hell heard that. Now did you take care
of that work I told you about?

IKUMI
Yep. Here is your menu.

IKUMI
Let’s start with the menu… I heard you
like leather, so I made the menu seem like
it is distressed leather. Also, I made the bar’s
logo seem as it was embossed on. It looks old
and worn so that it would link up with the
ambiance of your place. I also added the text
you asked for –
The Gates of Hell, Fine Cocktails and Spirits.

※ The picture isn’t blurry. I was just incredibly scared to hold the menu so my hand was shaking!

IKUMI
On the inside of the menu, we have a booklet
that has the actual Gates of Hell on the cover,
since I heard you often find your way down to
hell. I also added “Abandon all hope, ye who enter
here,” so everyone who opens the menu will know
take pause in what they are getting themselves into.
I think that fits what you are trying to do here
perfectly. I put your address and such on the back
of the booklet.

RODIN
What about the inside of this bad boy?

IKUMI
I was too scared to open it… Being, you know,
a mere mortal. Why don’t you take a look?

RODIN
Beautiful.

With that, our business dealings ended.

A few years passed, until just a couple of days ago I had a talk with Kamiya-san.

HIDEKI KAMIYA
What am I going to do for the pre-order gift… Hmm…
If we do a soundtrack, what should we do for the design…

Watching Kamiya-san’s glow brighter and brighter as he searched for an idea, I remembered something I had worked on a few years ago and decided to make a phone call.

IKUMI
Rodin!! I’ve got something urgent we need to talk about.
We want to use the menu I made for your bar as the
pre-order bonus for Bayonetta.

RODIN
Oh. Ikumi. Yeah, baby, that’s fine. I’ll break off
some spares I got lying around. By the way, I still
haven’t paid you for that design work, so we’ll call
it even.

IKUMI
Umm… OK. Kinda surprised that went
so well, but it all sounds good to me.
Thanks.

RODIN
When you get things wrapped up, make sure you
show me some love and send one this way.

CUT TO PRESENT DAY

So here is the final “The Gates of Hell” menu. We took one of the actual menus used at the shop and then housed in a special jacket that also holds the Rodin’s Selection CD.

※ Bayonetta and Rodin engaged in some sort of conversation. On the ceiling is the “Trinity of Realities” depicting the human world, Inferno, and Paradiso.

For the CD label, we used the painting of the Trinity of Realities, depicting the human world, Inferno, and Paradiso, found on the ceiling in The Gates of Hell. The CD contains tracks from Bayonetta selected by Rodin himself, and mastered especially for this CD. So I suggest you prepare yourselves emotionally before taking a listen.

So there you have it. Bayonetta’s Japanese pre-order bonus, Rodin’s Selection. It was only available for those who pre-ordered in Japan, and only in limited numbers, so I hope you got your hands on it!

The weather wasn’t cooperating so it was destined to be a day in the studio. I decided to revisit a painting I had done earlier this year along the American River. I usually don’t do something like this and I am not sure why. I have seen other artists paint the same subject or scene many times over, and each painting tells a slightly different story. I think I am leery of getting bored with the process. So to mix things up and give it a go I selected a different size (the original was 9 x 12″) a different surface (pastelmat vs an Ampersand panel) and a different time of day.

Rodin was right! I was pleasantly surprised when I got “sucked into” the process. The watercolor underpainting responded differently on the panel than the paper. And the pastel application had a different feel. Time flew by and in a matter of a couple of hours, Tomorrow’s Promise was done. Tomorrow I’ll try it again, promise!

I have a Twitter account. I got into it first via Startle TV in order  to drum up interest in the  website. I then took  a bit more interest in my own Twitter   account. Initially, I only had a  couple of followers. In fact, the number was 8. All of them people I knew. Over the past few days I have been tweeting more and following a few more people. I now have 33 followers. Not a great  amount  but 4 times as  many as when I first started out.  I try not to follow the usual people that so   many  do; Stephen Fry, Barack Obama, Larry David and Perez Hilton. I’m  not  really  interested  in  doing  that. I’m more interested in the less well-known. I also like the idea of 140 characters  coming to me via a  long-distance route. I follow some  people  in Alaska, some Americans, a guy  in India and an art  group in Tokyo. I can’t understand what the group in Tokyo write but I like to look at the pictures.

There  are  some people  closer to home that I also like to follow. A  London  Cab Driver called  Mike. Yesterday Mike tweeted “Dropped the boss at LHR off to play in the merc later!! Take the wife out she will be chuffed!! (Boss did say its ok!!).” (sic). This wasn’t a quote from a bygone age but almost the opening line to what could end up being a fascinating novel, or not. One  thing I have  found  with many American tweeters is that so  many of them don’t have much to say. Instead, they just type in quotes about how to become successful, remain happy, achieve all they want to achieve. I blame  Oprah Winfrey myself.  I’m sure a lot of them  keep ‘The Secret’ by their beds. Personally, I wonder why, if   The Secret is so great, so many people are still bothering to  try and win their  fortune on a double roll over lottery? Get out and read The Secret. Then it really could be you!

I have  decided to adopt a  new Twitter policy  which is to stop following people if all they ever do is type in quotes. It seems  pointless to me. I would  rather read a tweet like “Just  had my fringe cut and now I am going to drink a yard of ale” than some words of wisdom once written by Abraham Lincoln or Father Abraham. The latter may have once said some words of wisdom he picked up from his time spent with the Smurfs. If I want quotes, then I will reach for one of those books about quotes  of which there are so many.  I enjoy Twitter and certainly don’t see it as  a waste of time. As Auguste Rodin once said “Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely”. Which, of course, I hope I do.

(Except without that whole being executed for treason under the guillotine thing.  I bet that kinda sucked.)

Wow.  Amazing.  That is all I can say to describe this past weekend in Paris.  Paris is a city which affects me more than any other city that I have been to and I could never really articulate why… It is just a feeling and each time I come here (this was my 3rd visit) I have a completely new experience, regardless of whether it is my first or my third visit to the sight.  This weekend was a very special weekend because I was able to meet up with one of my best friends Alison, currently studying abroad in Barcelona, and introduce her to this wonderful city.  Sadly, as I write this post she is already on her way to the airport (I still have an hour wait or so before I jet back off to “reality”).  As I sit here I can feel my body giving into the exhaustion of a weekend of non-stop walking, eating, gawking, and just pure glee and excitement.  I hope that I can make it on and off the plane… (However, if I don’t I would be happy to eat beans and live in a cardboard box here.  I am sure even their beans are doused in butter!)

Yesterday was really our only full day together to sight-see so we decided to make the most of it even if it killed us, our joints, and our shoes.  Started our morning at the Louvre, made a bee-line for the Mona Lisa, wandered around a bit but decided that as guilty as we felt the Louvre, with it’s sheer gargantuan size was overwhelming and we would just have to come to Paris to do it justice!  St. Chapelle and Notre Dame were just as hauntingly beautiful as I remembered with the stained glass and dark stone that takes me right back to the middle ages.  (Yes, of course I remember it.)  We even got to sit in on a Mass!  Lunch was delectable with pumpkin soup, salmon, and ratatouille in a little café with low ceilings off of the Seine and then we started our biggest trek of the day through the Tuilleries, down the Champs-Elysée and up to the Arc de Triomphe.  Apparently driving there is so dangerous that if you get in an accident your insurance is void!  Our last stop of the day was the Eiffel tower, which while impressive during the day was a million times more amazing at night all lit up and sparkly.

Today, mindful of our time constraints we headed off to Musée d’Orsay, enjoyed the beautiful architecture of the former train station, the Van Gogh, Rodin, and Impressionists inside (among many others!).  Our last stop was the Garnier Opera house, which I had never been inside before and it made me wish that we had had more time to actually go and experience an opera or ballet production there…Oh well!  We have already started planning our next visit so it will definitely have to be on the list!

“Temos a arte para não morrer da verdade”

Fazia MUITO tempo que eu não ficava em São Paulo durante um feriado e fazia muito mais tempo em que eu não aproveitava um feriado para descobrir as atrações dessa grande cidade. Então, o último feriado do dia 20, Dia da Consciência Negra, foi dedicado a isso: curtir os amigos queridos, visitar pontos turísticos, desestressar um pouco, esquecer os problemas do cotidiano e conseguir um pouco de diversão.

Ao lado dos queridos Rafa, Mari e Talita, visitei o MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo e, além de ver o acervo fixo, contemplamos duas ótimas exposições. A primeira, De Dentro Para Fora – De Fora para Dentro, era uma exposição de arte mural, feita por 6 artistas que se especializaram nesse suporte experimentando nas ruas da cidade. Ao mesmo tempo, havia uma exposição dentro da exposição – uma loucura muito bacana. Eram telas, vídeos, fotografias, instalações e outros suportes apresentados em individual de cada um dos artistas.

Foi muito legal! É muito bacana ver uma arte basicamente conceitual, que nasceu da interação com a cidade e seus suportes, e entender um pouco do trabalho de cada um desses artistas. Também é legal destacar que havia um espaço de interação: gizes eram disponibilizados e os visitantes podiam escrever, desenhar e criar a intervenção que desejasse num determinado espaço. Com certeza, uma idéia genial e super apropriada para entender o caos das cidades e como as artes podem surgir em meio a tudo isso.

Genial!

A segunda exposição, Rodin – Do Ateliê ao Museu, já apresentava-se um pouco mais clássica e convencional de acordo com os padrões de um museu. Juntando a fotografia, a importância da mesma e as esculturas do artista, a exposição tenta evidenciar como acontecia o processo de criação de Rodin e como isto era absorvido pelas pessoas da época. Obviamente tudo foi muito interessante, mas preciso dizer que as esculturas, com certeza, foi o que mais me chamou a atenção.

As imagens nasciam dos materiais e pareciam seguir as formas do bruto. Então, de alguma forma, forma e conteúdo se mesclavam lindamente e traziam resultados maravilhosos. Me apaixonei por Eterna Primavera e O Beijo – com certeza duas obras que carregam um tom erótico e real tão forte que parece envolver o observador.

Muito lindo e impactante mesmo!

Depois deste lindo passeio pelo MASP, fomos almoçar na velha e boa padaria Bella Paulista e mais tarde caminhamos pela linda Avenida paulista, onde vimos feiras de artesanato, observamos o movimento dos carros e das pessoas, conversamos muito e ficamos em paz.

Um dia basicamente simples, mas com certeza muito bom e inesquecível… E eu confesso que precisava de algo assim para me inspirar e encerrar o ano com classe, calma e muita fé. Definitivamente!

Obras de Arte: sempre tão lindo!

Did you know that the expression “French Kissing” is not necessarily French?  In France, they call it ‘baiser amoureux‘–a love kiss–which is a much nicer expression if you ask me.

Do the youth of today still use the expression, “French Kiss“?  If they do, that’s had some nice longevity.

Although, if I remember correctly, the term “suck face” was used quite widely in my youth–though often disdainfully. It still creeps me out.

I remember reading a novel set in early Japan which explained that ‘kissing‘ had not been part of their culture until Westerners arrived, and this is actually true for other cultures as well.

It’s hard to imagine a “kiss-less” society, isn’t it?

I remember my first tongue kiss.  No fireworks there.  It was more like having a wet washcloth placed in my mouth.

Later kisses were spectacular– including those early ones with my husband.  But with a quarter of a century between us, they’re not quite as “fresh” as they once were.

I’ll never forget the line about kisses from the movie Sleepless in Seattle (I think it was that one.)  Three married women on a lunch date were discussing sex.  One woman asked another how she could have sex with her husband if she hated him so much.  She replied that you didn’t need love for sex, only for kissing–and all three women nodded their heads.

I did too.  But does that mean that a marriage is loveless if there’s no kissing?  My great-grandmother was happily married to her second husband for almost twenty years before he passed away when they were both in their early nineties, but they never shared a kiss. Literally, never.

So kisses can’t be everything, just as good sex doesn’t necessarily mean a marriage is healthy.   But I’m still moved by kisses–the ones I can feel in my toes when I see them on the screen;  the ones I turn away from on the street that inexplicably stir something inside.

When I was in Paris, the City of Love, in my early twenties, I couldn’t get enough of Rodin’s sculpture, The Kiss.  Of course, in art as in film and novels, the best kissing goes to the young couple or at least the new one.

Though one of the most famous pairs of lovers argued that there was nothing in a name, what did they know?  They still lived at home with their parents.  Maybe a rose would smell as sweet no matter what you named it.  But I’m going try calling tongue kissing,”the kiss of love,” and see what life that brings to my middle-aged smooching.

I was in the Rodin museum, I was trying to take a picture, and there was an ADORABLE old man who stood right next to the statue I was shooting, innocently smiling and admiring the sculpture. He was either oblivious or just incredibly aware of how photogenic he was. Here is the result:

O Masp inicia mostra do Escultor e Artista francês – Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) até o dia 13.12.09.

Serão expostas 22 esculturas de marmore e de bronze, bem como aprox.200 fotos dos bastidores do estudio do artista, demonstrando sua rotina entre 1880/1910.

Vale a pena conferir, o programa é barato para os níveis de São Paulo, custa só R$ 15,00.

É considerado o primeiro escultor moderno. Ok, isto é um pouco rolo. Vamos aos fatos e fotos.

• Era fascinado pelo movimento, inclusive pedia que seus modelos se movimentassem, e preferia dançarinas de cancan a modelos profissionais. Ele dizia que retratava as emoções através da mobilidade dos músculos.

• Considerava terminada uma escultura quando já tinha alcançado seu objetivo artístico, e por isso as vezes parece que deixou algo inacabado. Este inacabado reforçava a carga expressiva das figuras.

• Transportou o conceito de uma instantânea fotográfica ao 3D, isso mesmo. Captou instantes e plasmou isto na pedra, no cobre, no barrro, na cera. O poeta alemão, Rainer Maria Rilke que esteve vivendo na casa de Rodin por um ano, conta que ele era capaz de construir uma figura de barro em escassos 15 minutinhos.

• Também realizou os típcos cortes fotográficos nas esculturas. Se para contar tal história, não eram necessários os braços da figura, ele simplesmente não os realizava. Ele simplificou as formas ao máximo.

• E o mais extraordinário, conseguiu extrapolar o conceito do cubismo à escultura. Como? O cubismo é plasmar em um mesmo espaço pontos diferentes de vista de um objeto, pessoa ou paisagem. Ele pegou uma escultura e a reproduziu três vezes, mudando o tal do ponto de vista.

Dá uma olhada o que faziam os escultores do seu tempo …

Uma pena que como sempre o museu continua desprezando os meios eletrônicos, porque não se menciona no site a esta importante exposição, alguém pode me dizer a razão?!

Era la prodigiosa miniera delle anime.
Come vene d’argento silenziose
scorrevano il suo buio. Tra radici
sgorgava il sangue che affluisce agli uomini
e greve come porfido appariva nel buio.
Di rosso altro non c’era.

Rupi c’erano,
selve incorporee e ponti sul vuoto
e quell’enorme, grigio, cieco stagno,
sospeso sopra il suo lontano fondo
come cielo piovoso su un paesaggio.
E in mezzo a prati miti di pazienza,
pallida striscia, un unico sentiero era visibile
come una lunga tela distesa ad imbiancare.

E per quest’unico sentiero essi venivano.

In testa l’uomo snello in manto azzurro,
guardando innanzi muto e impaziente
divorava la strada col suo passo
a grandi morsi senza masticarla. Gravi, chiuse,
dalle pieghe del suo manto pendevano le mani,
dimenticata ormai la lieve lira
ch’era incarnata nella sua sinistra
come tralci di rosa nel ramo dell’ulivo.
Ed i suoi sensi erano in due divisi:
mentre l’occhio in avanti correva come un cane,
tornava ed ogni volta nuovamente lontano
alla prossima svolta era ad attenderlo -
l’udito gli restava – come un odore – indietro.
Talora gli sembrava di percepire il passo
degli altri due viandanti che dovevano
seguirlo fino al colmo dell’ascesa.
Poi nient’altro che l’eco del suo ascendere
dietro di lui e il vento del suo manto.
E tuttavia venivano, si disse
a voce alta, e udì perdersi la voce.
Venivano, gli parve, ma con passo inudibile,
i due. Se per un attimo
gli fosse dato volgersi (se il volgersi a guardare
non fosse la rovina dell’intera sua opera
prima del compimento) li vedrebbe
i silenziosi due che lo seguivano:

il dio dei viandanti e del messaggio
lontano, sopra gli occhi chiari il pètaso,
lo snello caducèo proteso innanzi,
e alle caviglie il battito dell’ali;
e affidata alla sua sinistra: lei.

La Tanto-amata che un’unica lira
la pianse più che schiera di prèfiche nel tempo,
e dal lamento un mondo nuovo nacque
ove ancora una volta tutto c’era: selva, valle,
paesi, vie, e campi, e fiumi e belve;
e intorno a questo mondo del lamento
come intorno ad un’altra terra, un sole
ed un cielo stellato taciti si volgevano,
un cielo del lamento pieno di astri stravolti -:
Lei, la Tanto-amata.

Ma ella andava alla mano di quel dio,
e il passo le inceppavano le lunghe bende funebri,
incerta, mite e senza impazienza;
chiusa in sé come grembo che prepari una nascita,
senza un pensiero all’uomo innanzi a lei,
né alla via che alla vita risaliva.
Chiusa era in sé. E il suo essere morta
la riempiva come una pienezza.
Come d’oscurità e dolcezza un frutto,
era colma della sua grande morte,
così nuova che tutto le era incomprensibile.
Ella era in una verginità nuova
ed intangibile. Il suo sesso chiuso
come un giovane fiore sulla sera,
e le sue mani erano così immemori
di nozze che anche il dio che la guidava
col suo tocco infinitamente lieve,
come un contatto troppo familiare l’offendeva.

E non era più lei la bionda donna
che echeggiava talvolta nei canti del poeta,
isola profumata in mezzo all’ampio letto;
né più gli apparteneva.

Come una lunga chioma era già sciolta,
come pioggia caduta era diffusa,
come un raccolto in mille era divisa.

Ormai era radice.

E quando il dio bruscamente
fermatala, con voce di dolore,
esclamò: Si è voltato -,
lei non capì e in un soffio chiese: Chi?

Ma in lontananza – oscuro contro la soglia chiara -
qualcuno in volto non riconoscibile
immobile guardava
la striscia di sentiero in mezzo ai prati
dove il dio messaggero, l’occhio afflitto,
si voltava in silenzio seguendo la figura
che per la via di prima già tornava,
e il passo le inceppavano le lunghe bende funebri,
incerta, mite e senza impazienza.

As if you recognize the dangers of a loose electric shaver,

and you’d like to spare me a sting or two

wrought from a wild slice at my hairline.

You want me to love you and your nimble hands.

Want me to glance in the mirror and see

you shaping my tightly cropped hair, edging away

the damage I do by wearing my hat. And you spin me around.

You curl my ears.

You slide supple fingers under my chin, square up my sideburns.

You are the Michelangelo of hair.

You are the Rodin of tight fades.

You are the building maker who smiles when we ride the elevator.
