Last year as part of completing a B.A in Communications at Dublin City University, I was required to produce a radio production thesis. I chose to make a documentary about Dublin’s ‘performance poetry’ scene, as it seemed like uncovered territory and, to my ears at least, a very engaging subject for radio.

Production of the doc began in September 2010 and finished in April 2011. In total 14 persons were interviewed for the project and 14 events documented/recorded. Those included in the finished piece are listed in chronological order below.

Submitted in May of last year, the documentary received first class honors. Seen as how enough dust has settled between then and now, I’ve decided to make it available for your listening pleasure. Also it’s worth adding, it was a very enjoyable project to undertake during which I met and talked to countless warm and friendly people:

The doc has also been featured on the Glor Sessions Tumblr and the Brownbread Mixtape Blog

Anyway, hope you enjoy it!

Events featured include – The All Ireland Poetry Slam Final 2010, The Glor Sessions, Tongue Box, The Brownbread Mixtape.

It was another great year for the brownbread mixtape. As always, we had some phenomenal musical acts

It was another great year for the brownbread mixtape. As always, we had some phenomenal musical acts and below are a selection of the incredible performers who graced our stage. For a variety of reasons we weren’t able to upload footage of every act from this past year, so you will have to listen to our podcast in 2012 to catch up on the other musical gems. Take the time to listen and enjoy the music. Then support them and spread the word, post the links, update your status and so forth, so that others can hear them and share in that joy too. So, without further ado, in no particular order, here are some of the best musical acts of 2011…

————————————————————————————————————————–

1. Marc O’Reilly

Marc O’Reilly is an exceptionally gifted guitar player and singer based in County Waterford. Without a shadow of a doubt, he is the real deal. As you sit mesmerised watching his fingers dance on the fretboard, you are silently drawn in by his bluesy, boozy voice. His debut album “My Friend Marx”, released last year, is a terrific piece of work, but it is in a live setting that Marc truly astonishes. His star is clearly in the ascendant and that should come as no surprise to anyone who has seen him perform. Find out where he is playing next and go there. You can thank us later.

[For more info: http://www.marcoreillymusic.com/]

————————————————————————————————————————–

2. Fia Rua

Fia Rua is a genuine troubadour and he sings terrific songs that are a blend of folk, punk and trad that he makes completely his own. With a voice that sounds steeped in centuries of experience, he bends wise words around magical melodies. His recent album “Falling Time” is a brilliant snapshot of modern Ireland and we heartily recommend picking it up, but it is in a live setting that Fia Rua truly excels. Seek him out, you will be rewarded.

[For more info: www.fiarua.com]

————————————————————————————————————————–

3. Lindsey Ryan Horne

We were extremely lucky to have the critically acclaimed North Carolina songstress perform songs from her upcoming album at our first show of the year. She was joined by our very own Enda Roche on percussion and the inimitable Christophe Capewell on violin. Stunning lyrics, delicate melodies, enchanting performance.

————————————————————————————————————————–

4. Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies

Travelling folksters Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies wowed us with their warm spirit and their intimate cabaret of joyful sing-a-long choruses and general participatory fun. Based in Bilbao, Dublin and Groningen they spent the last three years touring Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe playing bars, cafes, theatres, circus galas, festivals and even punk clubs! Their debut album Long Way to Be Free, a home grown collection of songs exploring love, faith and displacement in a world of contradictions, is an absolute joy and comes highly recommended!

5. Pearse McGloughlin

Our old friend Pearse McGloughlin joined the brownbread mixtape at our monumental Electric Picnic show, which, by his own admission, was his best ever gig. A tent filled with 200+ people roared in appreciation to his masterful songs and he closed out his set with this terrific rendition of his song “Ag Ól Ag Ól Ag An Garbhóg”. He was ably assisted by co-songwriter Enda Reilly, as well as percussive accompaniment from Fia Rua and our very own Enda Roche. A wonderful moment from a wonderful gig.

————————————————————————————————————————–

6. Robotnik

The eclectic, eccentric, excellent Robotnik played an absolutely unforgettable set at the brownbread mixtape, with a performance that incorporated delicate a capella songs, grandiose electronica and a unique rendition of the “Pat the Baker” jingle. Robotnik made a huge impression on both the audience and us, resulting in a regular slot for The Brownbread Players’ sketches on his 2XM radio show “Robotnik’s Random Rampage”.
Not only is Andy a virtuoso on guitar, but he has a stunning, raw, bluesy vocal to match. A monstrous talent with a shining career ahead of him.

Crazy Dog Audio Theatre is the brainchild of writer/performer/musician and all round renaissance-man Roger Gregg. We were thrilled to have Roger and his raggle taggle troupe at our show as they delivered a vaudevillian array of songs and poems in superb fashion, ranging from Weimar style cabaret songs to contemporary comic poems. Roger is also the driving force behind the Bee Loud Glade Cabaret sessions, where contemporary Irish poems are set to original musical compositions. It is a fantastic night of entertainment, so make sure you catch it. Their next show promises to be their greatest yet.

9. Niall James Holohan

Niall is the charismatic lead singer of Reader’s Wives and we were treated to a rare solo acoustic performance. His set was peppered with wacky asides, cool chord progressions and this cheeky and charming rendition of his song “Sexually Attracted to Myself” was the standout moment of his set. As catchy as it is quirky!

Justin is a wildly gifted violin player and when you add his songwriting capabilities to the mix, as well as his ability to innovate and layer using pedals, loops and electronic knowhow, you have a really unique, exciting artist. His musical output is prolific and he tours regularly both in Ireland and abroad, so make it your duty to see him in his element at a live show. It will bowl you over.

The current inimitable, impossibly brilliant incarnation of The Guilty Folk grew out of a chance reuniting of old friends at a very early brownbread mixtape. Since then they have gone on to become one of the funniest, bawdiest, boldest and most harmonious songwriting folkers. As rude as they are revelatory, they are a comedic and musical force to be reckoned with. 2012 promises to be their year. We love them. You should too.

brownbread mixtape #18 is on Wed, March 30th at 8.30pm, upstairs in the Stag’s Head. the theme for this month is “The Internet”

resident MC Kalle Ryan will be in place again to deliver some one liners and hold up an applause sign. resident sound man Enda Roche will also be in the corner ringing the decibels.

the following stellar acts will be performing>

MUSIC

Fia Rua |

Galway artist Fia Rua’s new album “Falling Time” might be just what the doctor ordered for these days of uncertainty and change. The album which was released to much acclaim last month offers us a fresh soulful kind of alt- folk that can touch the heart as-well as getting the collective feet tapping. Fia Rua is Eoghan Burke, a man with a very distinctive voice that sings like he means it, with lyrics that vary from personal tales of heartbreak and loss, to his own unique social commentary. The sound of the album is is hard to categorize, theres fiddles, guitars and voice, then theres synths, drums, bodhrans….but it all sits together beautifully. Special guests on the album include the wonderful Jinx Lennon whose rant adds yet another brilliant dimension to Falling Time. the brownbread mixtape is excited to bring Fia Rua to the stage. If there’s a new act that is deserving the nation’s attention this year, then its surely Fia Rua.

” a folking brilliant piece of work..4\5″ – HOT PRESS

Robotnik |

Robotnik is Chris Morrin, a highly challenged boy from Dublin, Ireland. Robotnik’s music is a mental adventure of pop, electronic beats and melodic musings on relationships, fantasies and twenty something-dom. Last year he exercised his Devo-esque performances across Europe alongside the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons and Crystal Castles. So far in 2011, Robotnik has just come back from touring both Germany and Russia and is currently working on his follow up album. the brownbread mixtape is delighted to bring one of Ireland’s most exciting and different new acts to the stage. Be prepared for euphoria and lunacy!

“Robotnik’s upbeat tunes are brilliantly bonkers and sweet, and should be investigated immediately by all persons interested in dancing around like loons. The likes of ‘Weird Road’ brings out a softer, quieter side which manages to be a little more introspective and bittersweet than the more upbeat stuff, but no less engaging” – BBC NORTHERN IRELAND

POETRY

Erin Fornoff

Erin hails from Asheville in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and currently lives in a cabin in the wilds of Wicklow. After writing a bit of poetry in high school and a single poem in college she decided she liked performing more than printing and moved into spoken word. For fun she memorizes poems–hers and others–on her commute. Most recently she has performed her poetry at The Glor Sessions at the International, Speakeasy Cabaret in Greystones, and Kilmainham Arts Night on a bill with Peter Sullivan, and at other locations in the US. She performed at the first Brownbread Mixtape with an overwrought Shel Silverstein poem known mainly for its extremely dirty words. She has a unique poetic voice, an American accent, and performs with real passion. The Brownbread Mixtape is thrilled to welcome this lyrical lefty to the stage. Get ready for melancholy and majesty.

THEATRE

Roger Gregg (Crazy Dog Audio Theatre) |

THis is true: At the age of twenty Roger Gregg was legally dead for over one minute in 1978. During this sojourn between life and death, he played cards with a strange bearded old man in white. Winning the game, the strange bearded man promised Roger that he would return to life, achieve great wealth and international fame. Though he was successfully resuscitated, Roger has since realised that the old bearded man was lying.

This is also true: Roger Gregg is an award winning playwright, composer, audio-producer and actor. Over the past 25 years he has written for Crazy Dog Theatre, Dublin Youth Theatre, TEAM, The American National Audio Theatre Festival, Graffiti Theatre, The Razor Edge, Oberon Theatre and The Gaiety School of Acting. His plays have also been produced by New York University, the University of Missouri and by the Theaterpedagogisches Zentrum in Nuremberg, Germany. His Crazy Dog productions have won many international awards including; 3 American Mark Time Science Fiction Awards, 2 Ogle Fantasy Awards and 2 AUDIOFILE Golden Earphone Awards. As a composer, Roger has created music for numerous exhibitions, films and theatre productions. In particular he has created many soundscapes for BARRABAS Theatre Co. In 2010 he was nominated for Best Sound Design in the Irish Theatre Awards for BARRABAS’s acclaimed ‘Johnny Patterson The Singing Irish Clown’. As a voice actor in countless commercials and many animation series, Roger’s most noted voice role is Eddie the computer in BBC Radio 4’s Sony Award winning Tertiary and Quintessential Phases of The Hitch-hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.

Also true: The will be performing 4 or 5 songs at the show. And they will be brilliant.

“One of a handful of truly great radio dramatists” – BBC RADIO 4

For immediate release: The AudioComics Company is pleased to announce their forthcoming collaboratio

For immediate release:

The AudioComics Company is pleased to announce their forthcoming collaboration with one of America’s leading audio drama writer/director/producers, Fred Greenhalgh of FinalRune Productions, as AudioComics will serve as the Associate Producers of FinalRune’s upcoming audio serial The Cleansed. This ambitious project echoes the NPR programming of the 1980s (Star Wars, 13 x Bradbury, etc.), as the serial will consist of three seasons, the first featuring ten self-contained 30 minute episodes. A total of 30 episodes will be produced. Further, a large portion of each episode will be recorded on location in different areas of Maine using the techniques developed by such legends in the world of radio drama/audio theatre as Tom Lopez of ZBS and Roger Gregg of Ireland’s Crazy Dog Audio.

Like all great science-fiction, the story uses the lens of an alternative reality to create a world that comes dangerously close to our own: The Cleansed is a geo-politically rooted story that takes place twenty years after the depletion of the world’s oil reserves, focusing on a group of three teenagers who have grown up together in a self-sustaining stronghold in rural Canada. Their peaceful life is interrupted when a message from a legendary rebel leader leads them on a journey into “The Republic,” a region of America where the remains of the US Military enforces strict martial law.

Simultaneously, two men appear shepherding a real apocalypse – as one claims he is the antichrist, and the other, Christ reborn. As the two factions build armies and prepare for their ultimate battle, the youths unite with the rebels to wage a war for freedom that will leave no one unscarred.

AudioComics co-founders William Dufris and Lance Roger Axt will be working with writer and director Greenhalgh on mixing and mastering the episodes, and promoting the work in arenas outside that of audio. “Both FinalRune and AudioComics share the same belief: that audio dramas can and should serve as the basis for, or even pilots for, projects in the greater media just as comic books have become prime source material for television shows and movies. In fact The Cleansed could become a comic book series. Or a television mini-series. Or a big-budget feature film. And why not?”

The Cleansed will be released first as 5 minute installments (echoing the BBC serials of producer/director Dirk Maggs), and later in its entirety as pay-per-MP3 downloads and compact discs through both the FinalRune and AudioComics websites. In the tradition of The Blair Witch Project and Lost, the series will have an encompassing digital presence, including a website with backstory, streaming downloads, and distribution information for radio stations. A “marketing assault” is also planned through social media networks including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. And in keeping with AudioComics’ committment of working with rising and established writers and artists in the worlds of comics and sci-fi, the trio are looking at potential pencillers and inkers for promotional artwork, and compact disc/MP3 cover art.

As with AudioComics’ production of Starstruck, Portland Community Station WMPG FM will sponsor the program, though the production will later be marketed for distribution on other community and public radio networks. The pilot episode will will air on both WMPG FM and Bangor’s WKIT FM (Stephen King’s rock and roll station) and on Halloween night, as part of a new collaboration among audio drama producers in different countries called Transcontinental Terror. Moreover, WKIT program director Bobby Russell will play himself in the series.

FinalRune Productions is dedicated to producing compelling original audio drama. Since their creation in 2006, FinalRune has released over a dozen original works, including the Ogle-Award winning “Waiting for a Window,” the pilot episode of “Open Season” by Archer Mayor (featured in the Wall Street Journal) and the cautionary tale “The Troll of Stony Brook.” FinalRune’s work is recorded on-location, using techniques similar to independent filmmaking for an immersive and realistic aural experience. Downloads of plays, production photographs, and articles on the craft are available on FinalRune’s website, http://www.finalrune.com.

The AudioComics Company provides superior audio entertainment with its professional full-cast audio theatre adaptations of licensed and original properties from the world of comic books, graphic novels, and more. AudioComics productions of classic, contemporary and world premiere properties will reach new audiences far beyond readers and comic book fans through the universally popular entertainment medium of multi-track recorded sound and music on CD and in downloadable form, accessible in today’s market with today’s sound. The AudioComics team is working to establish relationships with comic book companies, sci-fi and comic writers, sponsors, and the entertainment industry in Hollywood and New York, and to give these audio theatre pieces worldwide exposure. http://www.audiocomicscompany.com
