Há sim um brilhante narrador: Pink Floyd. Para a qualidade da música, as mesmas duas palavras. E mais duas: Michael Kamen. A câmera do sr. Alan Parker tem toda a liberdade. Faz o que lhe apetece. Contudo, nunca nos leva a lugares inóspitos (entenda-se: desinteressantes). Gerald Scarfe foi o responsável pela animação que encaixa perfeitamente com o resto do filme.

Amig@s de ElBaraMetal, la verdad es que este post me nació por el puro gusto, no se necesitan tener pretextos ni razones aparentes para justificar el hablar de un gran, grande, grandísimo disco de rock and roll como lo es The Dark Side Of The Moon, obra de los igualmente enormes Pink Floyd.

Corría el año 1973 cuando Pink Floyd, pioneros del rock progresivo y fieles seguidores de la psicodelia y la “locura” rockera de los años 60, editaron para la posteridad este álbum, considerado uno de los mejores discos de la historia, y tal vez, el que más influencia ha generado desde entonces en músicos de todos los géneros, no sólo del rock.

Y es que DSotM es un ejercicio complejo de creatividad musical, de una inventiva hasta ese momento inexplorada, que sin pensarlo siquiera, explotó y generó ondas expansivas de emociones encontradas en el entramado “floydeano” de la musicalidad exquisita de Gilmour, las letras profundas de Waters y las ambientaciones geniales de Wright y los beats secos pero volátilmente frágiles de Mason.

Todo el disco es genial, es verdad que hay que estar de un humor especial para escucharlo, ya que funciona mejor si se da uno el tiempo para oírlo de principio a fin, pero algunas piezas funcionan igualmente por separado, como la comercialmente magistral Money, Time y su genial introducción (pocas veces he podido escuchar algo más sencillo y a la vez tan complejo de emular y por ende, hermosamente rockero) o Us and Them, con todo el sentimiento explosivo que guarda en sus entrañas progresivas.

De colección este disco, hace poco salió por ahí la reedición especial del 25 aniversario, un disco remasterizado que salva algunos de los sonidos exquisitos del original, este si es para que se lo consigan en original (aquellos que todavía no lo tengan, que creo, serán, o deben ser, pocos).

De todas formas acá hay un sitio donde se lo bajan para que, después de darle unas dos o tres escuchadas, y si todavía no lo tienen, se lo pidan a Santo Clos o a los Reyes Magos ahora que se viene diciembre.

OD Records

Laoying Shao Road, Fenghuang, China

On the banks of the calmly flowing river Tuo, in the back water river-town of Fenghuang, sits  OD Record store.  Narrow and quaint, snugly camouflaged by tea shops and  food stores; a record store that could easily be unseen by even the most observant eye.

We enter the shop, which has more in common with a long slim corridor than your average store (the idea of browsing space, having not really caught on), and discover a wall dominated by CDs without covers.  Each CD sits in a perfectly fitted clear plastic wallet, offering neither explanation nor reason for their naked forms. I stare closely at the specimens and discover them to be neither official release, nor pirated copies, but press-release promotional CDs, the likes of which are usually sent to music journalists or radio-stations.

I stare closely at a remastered release of The Police’s Reggatta Da Blanc, and notice that each CD is dotted with  stickers offering press-friendly promotional notes in Mandarin. We stop for a minute and gaze out to the River Tuo in wonder, contemplating how a small shop in the middle of nowhere in China, could have come into such a supply of promotional CDs. We come to a swift conclusion; that the store is either an ex-writer/ radio presenter/ editor’s personal collection for sale, or else a record-label company has liquidated its stock onto the market (which, according to copyright legislation, is technically illegal).

Spurred on by the apparent rarity of the promos on hand (after-all when was the last time you saw a CHINESE promotional copy of a record!), we get flicking. A few interesting titles raise their heads; a chill out CD featuring a Radiohead remix tempts my purse strings, as does a James Brown live album from the 1980s, and Supertramp’s Greatest Hits.

I scan my eyes over the hypnotically monotonous shelving, searching for anything unusual or that I have wanted for a while. I spy Roger Water’s The Wall Live In Berlin,  haphazardly jammed at the back of one of the stands near the cash register. Recorded way back in 1990, the live album features the likes of Van Morrison, Sinead O’Conner and, erm, Cyndi Lauper, dueting with the ex-Pink Floyd singer.

Picking up on the slight interest I show, the manageress slots the The Wall into the shop’s stereo and cranks it up to 11. The opening chords of In The Flesh ring out, and a biro on top of the old speakers near the till rattles as Water’s aged voice eventually  croons, “So you thought you might like to go to the show”,  the infamous first lines of that infamous album.  I listen to the track,  reminiscent of that spine-tingling night at Live 8, and, light of its 40Y (£3.64) price tag, can’t say no.

We pay up, and wander back to the balcony of our hotel, where we listen to the album, as the sun sets over the quaint river town.

Estaba escribiendo un post y a la par decidí escuchar el disco Dark Side of the Moon remasterizada en 2003 en formato SACD y DTS, aunque hace una semana compre mi versión para Itunes me sorprendio como la version DTS contiene muchos sonidos y efectos escondidos que no podran ser apreciados con la versión stereo para Ipod Nano G5.

Asi que voy a dejar ese post para el fin de semana y decido hacer mi semblanza sobre este disco tan importante para el Rock y conclui que me declaro incapaz para ello, por lo que mejor comparto estos excelentes videos que van a detallar todo lo que quieran saber sobre esta obra maestra del rock universal.

Para este post sabía lo que quería decir, pero no sabía cómo sintetizarlo, no encontraba el hilo argumental. De pronto saltó en el ipod Perfect sense, part I, de Roger Waters (ex Pink Floyd), y todo encajó (en el bien entendido de que es el Amused to death entero lo que da sentido a este post):

Según la prensa digital (así que bien podría ser un bulo, una mentira o una inexactitud, pero admito que me da para este post) Bruce Springsteen – ese señor de  Nueva Jersey al que conozco personalmente (¿¿lo he dicho ya??) -  podría cobrar unos 10 millones de dólares por su autobiografía. Bruce no ha tenido una vida de excesos o de coqueteos con las “celebridades”. Su imagen más polémica sería apoyando a Obama. Y eso no le restaría ni un ápice de interés, “solo” le quitaría el morbo. Vamos, que yo también lo haría.

Por lo visto, Sting el otro día confesaba que era “socialista, a pesar de ser millonario”. ¿Es lo mismo un ciudadano que un consumidor?

Por otra parte, la NASA ha tenido a bien confirmar que “el mundo no se acabará en 2012”. Lo que no ha dicho es si será antes, pero lo ha hecho porque hay una película que anda de promoción y que se titula 2012. Así que nada tiene que ver con la retirada los crucifijos de las escuelas públicas o las excomuniones a pecadores públicos. Uf, menos mal.

Andrew Rasiej, uno de los más claros exponentes de cómo la tecnología está cambiando los movimientos sociales (ver www.personaldemocracy.com), ha afirmado en una entrevista reciente que “el poder de participación cuestiona todas las estructuras en los medios, los negocios y ahora la política. El sistema político del siglo pasado era vertical y se basaba en la retransmisión televisiva. Hoy entramos en una era en la que la gente no se identifica por la agenda política, sino por los temas. Ahora, el poder de la comunicación está en manos del votante. Es un gran reto para partidos y candidatos”.

I consider this to be one of Water’s minor masterpieces; it echoes Dylan at his best, really. Both choruses echo ’round my head quite regularly whenever I see a weepy, bloated pundit selling a kinder, gentler fascism and brand of Christianity that has nothing to do with empathy, love or truth:

When they overrun the defenses
A minor invasion put down to expenses
Will you go down to the airport lounge
Will you accept your second class status
A nation of waitresses and waiters
Will you mix their martinis
Will you stand still for it
Or will you take to the hills

Will you mix their martinis? That’s a f***er of a question that’ll keep you up at night.

The production and arrangement is criminally 80’s, including the guitar solo, but I can overlook that because of the amazing writing. It’s really one of my favorite songs of Mr. Waters’.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the guns of war fell silent over the fields of France as the Great War came to an inglorious end.  After four years of bloody war and twenty million dead, a generation of European youth was dead, great empires had fallen, new nations arose, and the whole world was changed.  Throughout Europe, November 11 is memorialized as Armistice Day.  In the countries of the British Commonwealth, it is called Remembrance Day.  In the United States, we call it Veterans’ Day.  But, by whatever name it is called, it serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifice that thousands of young people made when called upon to serve their nations in times of war.

I’m breaking from the theme of the blog today in that there were no satisfactory cover versions of the three tracks that I want to feature.  Also, I’m posting the lyrics to the songs so that their messages can be better considered.

In 1991, British rock band, Motörhead released their album 1916.  The title track was sung by lead singer and bassist, Lemmy, in an uncharacteristically quiet and tender voice and told the story of the young men who went to serve and die in the fields of Europe.

God on my side, and a gun in my hand,

And I marched and I fought and I bled

The other tracks I want to focus on are “The Ballad of Bill Hubbard”  and the last part of “Amused to Death” from Roger Waters’ (sorry to repeat him so soon; he thinks about war a lot)1992 album Amused to Death.  The album opens and closes with the words of WW I veteran, Alf Razzell, as he recounts how he had to leave fellow soldier Bill Hubbard to die alone in no-man’s land.  Guest guitarist, Jeff Beck provides a haunting soundtrack on the recorded version and Doyle Bramhall II does the job in the live performance.

[Alf Razzell:] “Two things that have haunted me most are the days when I had to collect the paybooks; and when I left Bill Hubbard in no-man’s-land.

“I was picked up and taken into their trench. And I’d no

call, ‘Hello Razz, I’m glad to see you. This is my second night
here,’ and he said ‘I’m feeling bad,’ and it was Bill Hubbard,
one of the men we’d trained in England, one of the original
battalion. I had a look at his wound, rolled him over; I could
see it was probably a fatal wound. You could imagine what pain
he was in, he was dripping with sweat; and after I’d gone about
three shellholes, traversed that, had it been…had there been a
path or a road I could have done better. He pummelled me, ‘Put
me down, put me down, I’d rather die, I’d rather die, put me
down.’ I was hoping he would faint. He said ‘I can’t go any
further, let me die.’ I said ‘If I leave you here Bill you won’t

to leave him there, in no-man’s-land.”

[Alf Razzell:] “Years later, I saw Bill Hubbard’s name on the memorial to the missing at Aras. And I…when I saw his name I was absolutely transfixed; it was as though he was now a human being instead of some sort of nightmarish memory of how I had to leave him, all those years ago. And I felt relieved, and ever since then I’ve felt happier about it, because always before, whenever I thought of him, I said to myself, ‘Was there something else that I could have done?’ [background: "I'd rather die, I'd rather die..."] And that always sort of worried me. And having seen him, and his name in the register – as you know in the memorials there’s a little safe, there’s a register in there with every name – and seeing his name and his name on the memorial; it sort of lightened my…heart, if you like.”

(woman) “When was it that you saw his name on the memorial?”

“Ah, when I was eighty-seven, that would be a year, ninete…eighty-four, nineteen eighty-four.”

Let us remember all the names on the memorials.

Além de um muro feito de concreto, há vinte anos era iniciada a tentativa de derrubar alguns dos piores valores do ser humano. O muro, muito mais que duas economias, dois sistemas, dois continentes, uma nação, dividia as pessoas, tornava algumas saudosas e outras egoístas.

“No geral, você é apenas mais um tijolo no muro” (All in all, you are just anoter brick in the wall), com essa frase Roger Waters nos mostra que “o muro” ainda está de pé tão firme quanto antes, só que agora é invisível aos olhos.

Em 1915 W. S. Maugham nos agraciou com “Servidão Humana” (Of Human Bondage), parece que pouco aprendemos com ele e tantas atrocidades aconteceram até 1961, ano de construção do muro. Penso cá com meus botões que tenha sido este o pico do desinteresse humano em Ser, mas ainda tão longe da bondade estamos que hão de ser derrubados muitos muros entre nós, em vista de derrubar valores, derrubar o concreto é tão simples quanto construir um muro, difícil é lembrar que fomos feitos do barro.

Hoy es lunes de nueva música en Bolten Inc.

Sólo que este lunes no es para descubrir nueva música. Es para recordar que hace 20 años se derribó el muro de Berlín y terminó la era del mundo bipolar. El 9 de noviembre de 1989, Nirvana era una joven banda, que tenía dos años de existencia y un sólo álbum, Bleach, que abrió la puerta del grunge junto con Pearl Jam, que se formaría un año después. Estas dos bandas formaron un género explosivo y efímero, pero cuya trascendencia podemos escuchar en casi todas las bandas de rock de hoy en día.

A propósito de la caída del muro, Roger Waters, ex-Pink Floyd, decidió que era una excelente idea conmemorar este hecho con un concierto de enorme producción, titulado simplemente The Wall – Live In Berlin. Por supuesto, el concierto consta principalmente de una de las obras más relevantes del rock: The Wall de Pink Floyd. The Wall es una ópera rock que habla acerca de Pink, un personaje que pudiera ser el alter-ego de Waters, cuyos problemas internos van construyendo un metafórico muro que lo aísla de todo lo demás. Esto, definitivamente, podía decirse de la Alemania dividida.

Este lunes está dedicado a esos dos grandes eventos. Uno, el nacimiento del grunge, un género que exhortaba a la gente a despertar del sopor con que nos dejaron los ochentas (y cuyo sopor se vive más que nunca en nuestros días), a rebelarse contra el sistema y tomar en sus manos el curso de sus vidas. Dos, la unión de este mundo dividido, conmemorado vía Roger Waters con una de las obras más grandes que ha existido en la música.

Además, el grunge fue el que primero me metió de lleno en la música. Así que si no son fans y están acostumbrados al ochenterismo de nuestra década, lo siento mucho. Mientras tanto, disfruten el video que les dejo. Honor a quien honor merece.

As anyone who knows me knows, I love Roger Waters and Pink Floyd.

Once, in college, my British roommate came in late (around 2 a.m., I reckon) and put my copy of the movie The Wall in the VCR (man, I’m getting old).  I awoke out of a dead sleep and came into the living room to watch even though I had the thing memorized.  He turned to me and said, “It’s like a ****ing religion with you, innit?”

True enough.

On July 21, 1990, Roger Waters and a cast of celebrity guests came together in the former no-man’s land of Berlin and performed the rock opera The Wall for a crowd of 350,000 people live and millions more watching the simulcast.  Just a year earlier, Waters had joked during a radio interview with Redbeard that he would only resurrect The Wall if the Berlin Wall came down.  Four months later, he had to put his money where his mouth was.

One of the stand out performances from that show was the Pink Floyd classic, “Comfortably Numb” performed by Waters, the Band, and legendary vocalist, Van Morrison.

This version would later be used in Martin Scorsese’s film The Departed.

Morrison would later include this song on his set list during his 2008 tour where he used a female vocalist for “the doctor” parts originally spoke-sung by Waters.

Pour les 20 ans, ils n’ont rien inventé.

Giornata speciale oggi. Per tutto il mondo. Perchè oggi è il 9 novembre 2009. Vent’anni fa infatti, dopo una serie di disordini pubblici e dopo che in agosto era stata smantellata la cortina di ferro, venne decisoda Egon Krenz, nuovo leader della Germania Orientale che i berlinesi dell’est avrebbero potuto attraversare il confine, passando così all’Ovest, con appositi permessi.

Era l’inizio della rinificazione tedesca, con l’implicito ok di Gunther Schabowski, ministro per la propaganda della DDR, che alla risposta di un cronista dell’Ansa sul quando sarebbe stato possibile compiere il grande passo rispose: “Per accontentare i nostri alleati, è stata presa la decisione di aprire i posti di blocco. (…) Se sono stato informato correttamente quest’ordine diventa efficace immediatamente“.

Migliaia di tedeschi dell’est si riversarono all’ovest forzando i Check Point. Dall’altra parte li accolsero con fiumi di birra gratis. La riunificazione di Berlino fu celebrata con il concerto di Roger Waters dei Pink Floyd che eseguì dal vivo “The Wall“. Giorni dopo, il muro fu abbattuto fisicamente dai tedeschi, che ne conservano ancora oggi i pezzi come souvenir. Pochi mesi dopo, viene ufficialmente sancita anche la riunificazione delle due Germanie.

Vogliamo celebrare questo giorno con una canzone diventata simbolo della caduta del muro: “Wind of change“. Il gruppo tedesco degli Scorpions la scrisse nel 1989, di ritorno da una viaggio da Mosca. Pochi mesi prima della caduta del muro. La canzone, oggi, risulta quasi profetica.  “Era come se il mondo stesse cambiando davanti ai nostri occhi – dicono gli Scorpions ad una intervista ad Euronews –  Tornando a casa, nel settembre del 1989, le emozioni erano così forti, e quello che abbiamo visto tra il 1988 a Leningrado e il 1989 a Mosca era un sentimento forte di speranza nel fatto che il mondo sarebbe cambiato per il meglio”. Idag är det exakt 20 år sen Berlin-muren föll. Och den var ändå mycket senare byggd än Visby ringmur. Som för övrigt ännu står kvar.

Aprovechando el motivo del 20 aniversario de la caída del muro de Berlin, la noche del 4 de noviembre la cadena  MTV organizó un concierto gratuito en la puerta de Brandenburgo con la participación del grupo irlandés U2. Este acto sirvió como precedente para la entrega de los premios MTV que se han entregado esta noche. U2, Beyoncé y Eminem han sido los triunfadores de la gala.  Aquí tenéis diferentes momentos de la actuación que duró alrededor de 30 minutos.

Desde aquí también queremos celebrar la efemérides del fin del telón de acero y para ello os hemos preparado una serie de videos relacionados con la ciudad germana. Pero antes vamos a recordar lo que sucedió aquella noche del 9 de noviembre de 1989 con este breve introducción:

Nos metemos ya de lleno con nuestra colección de canciones. 8 meses después de la caída del “muro de la vergüenza”, el 21 de julio de 1990 Roger Waters organizó una grandiosa actuación conmemorando el suceso que terminaba con la división de las dos Alemanias. Como ya contamos en nuestro post sobre la música de aquel año, el ex- Pink Floyd contó con invitados de lujo para la ocasión. Con Cindy Lauper interpretó el clásico Another Brick In The Wall, que le iba como anillo al dedo a tal evento.

Para hacer su aclamado disco Achtung Baby! los irlandeses U2 se trasladaron a Berlin para grabarlo en los estudios Hansa. Brian Eno volvía a la misma ciudad con la que plasmó en los 70 la etapa berlinesa de Bowie, esta vez como productor. En el álbum había diferentes guiños a la ciudad, como la canción Zoo Station que  hacía referencia a la línea de metro del Zoo que casualmente se llama U2. La continuación fue Zooropa que incluía una canción que aparecería en la película Tan Lejos, Tan Cerca del cineasta alemán Wim Wenders. El video, que lo dirigió el mismo Wenders, está ambientado en Berlin y  junto a Londres y Belfast, también se menciona en la letra.

Se conoce como la “trilogía berlinesa” a los tres discos que David Bowie inmortalizó en Berlin a finales de los 70: Low (1977), Heroes (1978) y Lodger (1979). Producidos todos por Tony Visconti y con la participación estelar de Brian Eno, el “duque blanco” se empapó de diversas influencias germanas tanto artísticas (Kraftwerk, el grupo precursor del tecno) como socio-políticas (división este-oeste del país, etc). Una de sus mejores canciones contaba una historia de unos amantes con el muro de telón de fondo.  En este mismo blog la comparamos con unas versiones que seleccionamos de las muchas que se han hecho. Se titula Heroes y el video es de la época de su Glass Spider Tour.

En 1986 un grupo de nombre Berlin consiguió que uno de sus singles fuera mundialmente conocido gracias a la banda sonora de la película Top Gun. Protagonizada entre otros por Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer y Meg Ryan, el film siempre será recordado con los acordes de fondo de  Take My Breath Away.

Y para terminar qué mejor que hacerlo con una de igual título que la misma ciudad. En 1973 Lou Reed se pegó un enorme batacazo comercial con su disco conceptual Berlin. Durante 33 años no lo tocó nunca en directo. Hoy en día es considerado como una obra maestra a pesar de la desesperanza que respira. La relación entre dos jonkis sirve al neoyorkino para presentarnos un panorama desolador.

Idag är det exakt 20 år sen Berlin-muren föll. Och den var ändå mycket senare byggd än Visby ringmur. Som för övrigt ännu står kvar.

Eftersom jag inte hittar någon bra länk av Die Mauer med Ebba Grön, får det bli det näst bästa; Pimme solo. Lägg även märke till Gotlandsvännen Eddie Nyström på gitarr. Tänk förr i tiden, då stod publiken med tändare vid såna här tillfällen. Nu är det mobiltelefoner. Det var bättre förr, och ju förr dess bättre. Ingen hade ens orkat lyfta en mobiltelefon så högt förr i tiden…

Just a quick note to share with you that Roger Water’s manager has confirmed to NPF that “Roger is considering touring The Wall in 2010 and 2011. It’s obviously early days but we will keep you posted when we have more concrete news for you.” So there you have it!

It’s his album, after all.
