My son came home from PreK with a paper pilgrim hat the other day.  After admiring his handiwork, my mind went to the obvious place.  

Pilgrim names.

Spokane’s Spokesman-Review reminds us that back in 1620, first baby born to the Pilgrims in New England was named Peregrine.  Big brother was called Resolved.  

There were, of course, plenty of men called John and William and women named Mary and Anne.  

The more interesting masculine names worn by Plymouth Rock arrivals included:

• Desire
• Degory (though he may have been Gregory.  Or Digory – we don’t know much about him.)
• Giles (brother to Constance, Damaris and Oceanus)

There were fewer women, but a few stand-out names:

I’ve read estimates that only around 25% of the Purtians ever had names that would’ve seemed unusual in their day.  If that’s true, then 75% answered to ordinary appellations for their time, like James and Elizabeth.  

It also seems surprisingly consistent with modern day experience.  Around three-quarters of all kids born in the US receive a Top 1000 name.  In the nineteenth century, names ranking in the 900s were only given to a few kids; today, names at those same rankings are worn by a few hundred.  Really unusual names have never been terribly common – but neither was there a moment where every boy was Robert and every girl was Jane. 

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel of scandal amongst the Puritans, The Scarlet Letter, introduced a few unusual names not worn by the original settlers, including Hester and Pearl.  Most of the other names were unremarkable – Arthur and Roger aren’t popular today, but they don’t make you think of the novel, either.  

Even in fiction, not every Puritan was called Flee-Fornication.

. A primeira reação que teve, ao entrar no carro da Polícia, foi dizer: “perdi a minha clínica”.

. Era um empresário.

. Bem sucedido.

. Que contava com a omissão da sociedade.

. Do Cremesp, por exemplo.

O casarão onde funciona a clínica, na esquina da avenida Brasil com a rua Argentina, nos Jardins (zona oeste de São Paulo) foi alugado há sete anos. Dias antes de ser preso, ele procurou os proprietários para pedir uma redução no valor do aluguel.

Nos meses seguintes à prisão de Abdelmassih, os proprietários notaram sucessivos atrasos no pagamento do aluguel. Eles teriam tentado conversar e marcar encontros com os responsáveis pela clínica, mas não eram recebidos. Eles, então, decidiram então ingressar com uma ação na Justiça.

Procurado pela reportagem, o filho de Abdelmassih não foi localizado.

Today I have a lot of little tidbits I want to share, but I’ve already committed to being thankful this week. So, I’m going to be thankful and then move on to some other more pressing topics. Topics like, WTF is wrong with television networks. Why do they play 5 episodes of a new show and get me hooked then tell me that I have to wait 4 WHOLE MONTHS for it to start back up again. Seriously? That’s how they want to play this. If I wasn’t already hooked on V, I’d tell ABC to go suck it. But now I have to wait until March 2010 for it to start back up again, and I’m not committed enough to my anger over the whole scenario to boycott the show. I have no self-control sometimes. I need to work on that.

Anyways, speaking of work and being thankful. Today I’m feeling a little thankful that I have work. As much as I whine about having to leave Azita 5 days a week to go work in an office, I am thankful that I have an office to go to. An office that will give me a paycheck. Having been unemployed for a whole year once, I can really feel for all of the unfortunate people who are part of the statistics quoted in the news every month. It is a horrible feeling to be unemployed, and it honestly puts the fear of unemployment in you. I am constantly fearful of losing a job at a time when I can’t afford to lose one. So, I am thankful. Thankful that I have a paycheck, because right now I really need it. Thankful that while I am in a position where I have to reside in an office for much of the week, at least my work is challenging and interesting enough to make the week fly by. Usually.

You know what else is interesting? How seriously bloated Roger’s head has become thanks to yesterday’s post. I am half tempted to delete that shizz and act like it never happened. But, I’ll admit that big head Roger is kind of more fun to banter with sometimes, so maybe I’ll leave it up.

By the way, that was some segue into the previous paragraph, huh? I say this because have I mentioned how idiotic I find the talking heads of News Channel 8? (That totally made sense, because I have heard the stupidest segues in the whole wide world on that news show) I don’t know why I watch that crap every morning. Oh wait, I remember. BECAUSE I WANT TO SEE THE EFFIN WEATHER. Yes, somehow I think it will be faster to hear them tell me whether or not I should pile on the warm clothes, wear a raincoat, or otherwise make weather-inspired adjustments to my daily attire, than to just look up the weather online. Instead the one guy who looks like Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle basically reads the entire contents of the entertainment section on Google News to the camera. And, he acts like 1) people care what he talks about and 2) he is enlightening us with something truly amazing, like proof of the Riemann hypothesis. He makes me crazy, and yet I watch this drivel every morning. Someone needs to motivate me to find the remote control and use it. STAT!

Lately things kind of suck on the work front, and the malaise I feel as a result is spilling over into my life. I’d whine about it, but the truth is I hate whining, especially when done in the week of thanksgiving. I take Thanksgiving seriously. It’s not just a day for me. I try to be thankful all year. Even when suckiness abounds. Actually, especially when it does. There is no better time to remember that the good in your life outweighs the bad.

So this week I am going to do the thing everyone else with a blog is doing, and I’m going to detail the things I am most thankful for. I will force the thankful into me damn it, and maybe it will push some of the woe is me out.

Today since I’m doing the obvious thing post-wise, I will start with the least obvious thing that I am thankful for — my husband. I say that this is not so obvious, because I tease the poor guy mercilessly. I can really dish it out. You’d think I disliked him if you heard it. He of course can dish it right back.  I think our back and forth makes for an interesting marriage personally. We are certainly never bored.

I am thankful for his presence in my life. If you know me, you know that I am an anxiety-filled wreck. Take any good situation, and I will someone find something to feel anxious about. Anxiety keeps me up at night. It starts with me trying to workup my to do list for the next day and ends with me frantically putting together a spreadsheet with a year-long budget for our household or scouring websites about deadly diseases or trying to figure out how we’re going to buy a new car that we will surely need to buy because I think I heard a slight rattle when we turned left this morning. On those nights, Roger knows how to bring me back down to Earth, to help me be rational again. He doesn’t discount my feelings. He listens and helps me understand why everything really is all right or at least manageable. Then he helps me manage it. I’m fully aware that most people would call me a kook then roll over and go back to sleep. I’m really lucky, and I’m thankful for it.

But that’s not all. Roger is my biggest fan and my biggest ally. He is a loving father, not just to Azita but also to our dear little kitties — Buzz and Maggie. He contributes a great deal to running the household, and I don’t even need to ask him.  He tells me I’m pretty and looking thin, even when I know I’m looking chubby and rough around the edges. At the same time, he’s honest with me when I ask him how an outfit looks (that’s actually a good thing to me, just so we’re clear). He writes me lovely letters, and he has many times stayed up late with me so we could talk into the wee hours of the morning. He loads my iPod with my favorite music, and with new music that he knows will become some of my favorites. He lets me vent to him when I really need to vent and lets me know when I’m crossing over into whiny bore territory. He cooks me dinner when I have no time for cooking, and he stays out of the kitchen when I am indulging in some much-needed cooking therapy. He doesn’t whine about all of the crazy hobbies I decide to pick up, nor about all of the stuff I have laying around from said crazy hobbies after they don’t pan out. That includes an autoharp, by the way. I am not joking. An autoharp.

Clearly there are many reasons to be thankful for Roger. There are many more I haven’t mentioned, mostly because I can’t remember them now. But they do exist, and I’m sure they’ll come to me as soon as I hit the Publish button.

Don’t let him know it, but I like having him around. And I am really thankful that he loves me.

Fünf lange Jahre ist es her, seit das Wiener Waxolutionists-Trio zuletzt in Albumlänge von sich hören ließ. Farbenfroh melden sich die Ösis nun mit We Paint Colors zurück, denn die Produktionen von DJ Buzz, DJ Zuzee und Bionic Kid sind sehr verspielt und extrem facettenreich. So reicht der experimentierfreudige Sound von elektronisch bis verjazzt, ist von der Geschwindigkeit aber überwiegend im Downtempo gehalten. Bunt gemischt ist auch die Palette an Gästen, mit der die Waxos dick mit Untergrundrap auftragen. Erster in der langen Reihe ist das Soul-Rap Projekt Hygher Baby aus Stockholm. Mit harmonischen Rhymes setzt besonders Rapper Pure P ein Ausrufezeichen auf die smooth arrangierte Synthie-Komposition Flashlight. Westcoast Soulvibes gibt es anschließend mit Steel Remains und dem kalifornischen Rapper Blu. Selbst mit den zunehmend druckvolleren Boom-Bap Bässen, die Frank Nitty aus Detroit mit On!!! und die auf dem Album einzigen deutschsprachigen Vertreter Manuva, Flowin’ Immo und Roger (Blumentopf) mit Showbiz serviert bekommen, bleibt das musikalische Klima stets zurückgelehnt. Das reimende Trio Mystic, Dave Ghetto & Hezekiah darf mit den bouncend dahin fließenden Drums von Dance With Me und dem stampfig-auftreibendem Feet Don’t Fail Me gleich zweimal zu den Mikros greifen. Neben jeder Menge Skits und Scratches sind auf We Paint Colors selbstverständlich auch reine Instrumentaltracks vertreten. Direkt von der dunklen Seite des Mondes scheinen die Nachtschattengewächse den düsteren Basslauf von Eos eingefangen zu haben, mit dem sie hier eine Jazztrompete einhüllen. Am Ende fährt das Produzenten und DJ-Team zusammen mit dem russischen Beatzaren DJ Vadim noch den Drum’n’Bass unterlaufenen Grime-Track Kill Kill Kill auf, der durch den abgedrehten französischen Rap von Big Red vollendet wird. Insgesamt liefern die Waxos eine unterhaltsame Stunde feinster Underground-Tunes ab.

O que dizer desse campeonato, hein? O meu tricolor perdeu em uma grande partida, tudo perfeito para o Flamengo assumir a liderança e levar a Magnética a loucura, mas não é que o Robin Hood surge e rouba pontos do rubro-negro, e o mais incrível o então enterrado Colorado ressurge do escuro vence o Galo dentro do Mineirão e chega com muita força para a disputa do título, esse campeonato continua sem ninguém poder fazer previsão de nada. Como diriam os sábios, o jogo só acaba quando o juiz apita. Pelo jeito, é melhor esperar a última rodada.

É Washington, tem que comemorar muito, a rodada que começou desastrosa terminou razoável.

Botafogo 3 x 2 São Paulo: Que jogaço!! Lógico que é péssimo escrever após a derrota, mas deve-se reconhecer a grande partida que aconteceu no Engenhão. A partida foi eletrizante, talvez deixou a desejar na beleza, mas a vontade dos dois times foi fantástica. Pelo lado do alvinegro, Jobson foi o nome da partida desmontou a defesa são paulina e participou ativamente dos três gols anotando dois gols e dando o toque para o terceiro. Pelo tricolor, destaque para Jorge Wagner, jogou muita bola, correu muito, na minha opinião Ricardo Gomes errou no segundo tempo, no lugar de Marlos cansado, colocaria o menino Mazzola que é veloz ao invés do bom centroavante Henrique. Em um campeonato que reclamamos tanto da arbitragem, eu tiro o chapéu para Sandro Ricci.

Sport 0 x 3 Fluminense: O Fluminense segue avassalador e contagiando todo mundo com sua luta pela fuga do rebaixamento, ainda não foi dessa vez, mas agora tem a certeza que depende somente de si mesmo, Conca, Fred e o coração vão tornando esse momento do Fluminense quase histórico. Pelo time pernambucano, resta apenas entrosar o time para 2010, identificar os problemas, repor o time com inteligência traçar um planejamento adequado.

Santos 4 x 0 Coritiba: E o Santos desencantou, adivinha porque? Isso mesmo, Madson voltou a jogar bola, ja que Ganso voltou a jogar bem. Para o alvinegro praiano, a certeza que o rebaixamento não passou de um pesadelo, mas resta apenas para o time garantir a vaga na Sulamericana. Pelo Coxa, o sinal acendeu de vez e começa a preocupar a proximidade do rebaixamento, aliás hoje pelo atual momento, os dois times paranaenses são os favoritos para jogar a Série B e fazer o clássico com o Paraná. Ainda não me conformo com o time do Alto da Glória, na minha opinião pelo time que tem não era para estar passando sufoco.

Santo André 4 x 2 Avaí: Mais um daqueles jogos onde o Santo André despertou e resolveu jogar bola, fez uma partida aberta contra o Avaí e venceu com um sonoro 4×2, mas de qualquer forma a chance de esse ter sido o último bom jogo do Ramalhão é forte, já que para cada um bom jogo, o time de Marcelinho joga outros quatro péssimos. Do lado da surpresa do campeonato, não há muito o que dizer, pois a partir de agora qualquer resultado que o time conseguir não modificará a certeza da excelente campanha realizada pelo time de Silas, que na minha opinião merece ser eleito o melhor técnico do Brasileirão.

O Mosaico dizia: "A Maior torcida do mundo faz a diferença.", era para ter feito, mas não fez... Ficou maravilhoso o mosaico, mas o Goiás calou o Maracanã.

Flamengo 0 x 0 Goiás: O time carioca sentiu a responsabilidade de vencer para se tornar líder, pressionou mas faltou apenas um detalhe, o gol. O meio campo rubro-negro estava perdido, Toró marcava Aírton e Zé Roberto não conseguiu infernizar a zaga como nos últimos jogos. O Goiás mostrou que vai complicar a vida dos adversários, o que me deixa incomodado já que o próximo adversário deles é o meu tricolor. Como esse Iarley é chato, agora se o Léo Lima, fosse meio Hernanes o esmeraldino teria vencido a partida.

Atlético-MG 0 x 1 Internacional: O Colorado não só chegou de vez no G4, praticamente garantiu a vaga na Libertadores e surpreendentemente volta a disputa do título. Esse campeonato é para matar qualquer um do coração. Do lado do time gaúcho, pode ser que seja tarde a recuperação, mas de qualquer jeito a tempo de chegar na Libertadores, o time voltou a mostrar aquele futebol vistoso do primeiro semestre. O meu Galo querido voltou a decepcionar sua incrível massa dentro do Mineirão, em um vacilo da zaga Giuliano marcou o único tento da partida. O Galo terá outro confronto decisivo para as suas aspirações enfrenta o Palmeiras dentro do Parque Antártica.

Vitória 2 x 1 Barueri: O time baiano voltou a vencer e assim espantou de vez a sombra do rebaixamento, vi apenas os gols, pelo lado do Vitória bom ver Leandro Domingues voltar a marcar e Roger sempre ele, amado e odiado, o atacante sempre deixa um golzinho, assim como Val Baiano pelo lado do Abelhão que marcou mais um.

Waters Says He’ll Perform if Israel Tears Down Wall

Pink Floyd’s former frontman Roger Waters said Tuesday he’ll take to the stage the minute Israel tears down its West Bank separation wall, just as he did in Berlin two decades ago when another wall came down.

Visiting a Palestinian refugee camp in the shadows of the towering concrete structure, the British rocker who co-wrote the iconic 1970s album “The Wall” said he hopes “this awful thing is destroyed soon.”

Waters, 65, said the West Bank wall has been on his mind since he first saw it up close in what he described as an eye-opening visit in 2006, following a concert in Israel.

“People who haven’t actually seen this, what’s going on here, can’t actually imagine the impression that it has on you, the sick, kind of churning feeling that you get in your very heart when you see this, how depressing it is,” Waters told The Associated Press in an interview.

Water’s comments didn’t sit very well with Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev, who, quoting The Wall’s most famous lyric, said “we don’t need no education” from Waters.

Israel began building the barrier — a concrete wall in urban areas and fence with sensors and barbed wire along rural stretches — in 2002 following Palestinian bombings and shooting attacks on Israeli civilians. Israel insists it’s a temporary security measure.

Palestinians says it’s a land grab because, once the final third is built, it will slice off 10 percent of the West Bank, part of the lands they want for their state.

The stretch of barrier between Jerusalem and the biblical West Bank town of Bethlehem consists of graffiti-covered gray slabs, with army watchtowers rising up at intervals. At an Israeli-run wall crossing, large crowds of Palestinians wait in long lines, particularly during morning rush hour, to reach jobs in Israel.

On the northern outskirts of Bethlehem, the Aida refugee camp, home to about 5,000 Palestinians, abuts the wall. Palestinian officials often escort foreign dignitaries to the camp — among them Pope Benedict XVI during his Holy Land pilgrimage last month — to illustrate the disruption of daily life by the barrier.

Waters dismissed Israel’s security argument, saying he believes the wall “is not here to stop Israelis being blown up on buses.” He said if that was the sole reason, “what’s it doing in the occupied territories, surrounding settlements and cutting (Palestinian) farmers off from their olive trees and so on and so forth?”

“This is an exercise of colonialism,” said Waters.

Regev said the barrier has sharply reduced Palestinian attacks, which have killed hundreds of Israelis since the outbreak of Israeli-Palestinian fighting in 2000.

“We don’t need no education about suicide bombers coming into Israel and murdering innocent people, and how the security barrier has prevented that by more than 95 percent.”

But Waters said he believes the barrier is indefensible.

“When you stand in front of an edifice like this, whether it’s here or outside a township in South Africa, or in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Second World War, or in Berlin in the 60s and 70s, it’s something you know instinctively that this is wrong. It’s a bad thing,” he said. “It cannot survive forever.”

If it does come down one day, he said, he’ll perform at the site, just like he did in 1990, at a spot where the Berlin Wall had fallen just a year earlier. “In fact, I would insist on it,” he said.

In the meantime, he’s considering performing elsewhere in the West Bank, perhaps in the town of Ramallah, but has not made firm plans. On Monday, Waters visited a refugee camp in the northern town of Jenin to support efforts to reopen a local movie house that closed in 1987.

When he played in Israel in 2006, he was criticized by Palestinian activists trying to organize a cultural boycott of Israel. Waters said he now feels ambivalent about having performed in Israel.

Waters, who left Pink Floyd in 1985, ruled out a reunion with his former band mates; their last joint performance was in 2005, for a Live 8 concert. “We had a great career as Pink Floyd. We all enjoyed it. We all worked together and enjoyed everything and it was brilliant. I think it’s over,” he said.

OK, so most NFL fans are aware of the fact that Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was fined yesterday morning by NFL Commish Roger Goodell. Now, Bud Adams is 86 years of age and was fined 250,000 dollars by Goodell for giving the bird to Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson, who is 91 years of age. Now 250,000 dollars is the third largest fine ever given out by the NFL. The first being a 1 million dollar fine to former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo in 1999 and the second being Bill Belichick (Still love you) 500,000 dollar fine. Now, am I the only one that finds this ridiculous? I mean, how are you going to fine an 86 year old man 250,000 dollars for flicking off a 91 year old man? Now I know they are both owners and that money is not a concern for either of them but I find the whole situation hilarious. I mean, I would be pumped if the owner of my beloved team would show the same enthusiasm and passion for a win as Bud Adams showed. My only argument relates to the amount of the fine. I mean, really? 250,000 dollars? It seems even more crazy when Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tommy Harris gets fined only 7,500 dollars for punching his oppenent while on the ground. I mean thank God Ed Hochuli was there to run shit. But ya what do I know, you watch and tell me which incident is worth the 250,000 dollar fine.
