THE SEASON OF THE DEAD

1. Vergilian Fortunes
from the Aeneid

Weeping I left my native coast,
my harbor, the skull-bare plain
where once stood Troy.

Deep into exile I was thrust, I,
my companions, my son,
my household gods, the gods

of all my people, destiny’s refuse,
flotsam in waters we sowed
with friends. And every day

hardship was at our elbow,
each narrow ship an agony,
each groan of wind and rigging

a new curse, until at last
we threw our bodies to dry earth.
The only crop we had that year was death.

2. Bay of Slaughter
St. Augustine, Florida

To faith the world leaves little room:
that moon without a need for proof
beyond two moonlit eyes
fixing it there, this empty beach,

its clumsy ghosts crabbing
with no clue they endure.
There are other signs, no doubt,
but for those less weary or less sure:

a steel-blade cut of sea on land, a cross
of embers on a dune
that has known tragedy, where men
have fed men into a grave,

into a name that still holds sway
over these waves.
There is a moral here, and there’s not.
And we, French Huguenots

and our Castilian keepers,
what else were we to make
of the oracles of marsh and sky,
the self-sure omen of the tides,

other than the world was as it should be,
which knows not what it means
to let go and rise, as if at sea,
to be hungry so long memory is hunger?

3. For an Enemy Pilot
(1923-1945)

Joystick forward, rudder right,
his fall is still and upward
from darkness into a brief light –

quilt of coral-cloud and flak,
shell-burst of machinery,
water stitched to a horizon

by a broken thread of smoke.

In walrus-tusk, whale jaw,
in the pages of parched books

sweetly bitter as old ginger,
in gowns dyed with lime and ash,

the world has its aftermath:

Crabs burrowed his ribcage,
currents eased his bones
under silt and sand. The sea

has no obligation to be kind –
it fulfills its duties well,
it carries on, it holds no memory.

SECOND CURSE

Mine was a gaunt love
lean as hungry cattle,
a herd flowing like guilt

through bloody reeds –
but that was yet to come.
I could grow wonders then

in fields I cleared of thorns
(these the first curse),
but He rewarded blood,

and I, the oldest, was refused
before the second curse,
before the ground

dried like a thirsting mouth
and dust followed my steps
dutiful as fever.

I thought I understood:
For he who loves a son
or daughter more than me

is not worthy of me,
and I raised Abel up,
fed him milk I craved,

taught him his steps,
to tend the cows, kept
the harder toil for myself.

How he crumbled in my arms –
I gave of blood precious to me
and in return got a life’s desert,

shadeless rocks, these thickets
I search for starving beasts
that I may slay and eat.
———————————————

This poem is, of course, a re-telling of the Cain story. He’s still a murderer, but not for the reason we thought.

It was published in 2000. After this, I stopped sending out until 2011.

Love is Mud

We are sand
and sea, land
and cloud. A beach.
A horizon.
Something else,
together.

I am dust,
you water.
But we are mud.
We fall in us,
sink in us.
Together.

——————————————–
I had been trying to write something for Melinda for our anniversary. Then, three days after the fact, this showed up.

I wrote most of it in about 30 minutes, playing with various words for effect. The next-to last line was the last to fall into place, the following morning, after two or three tries.

I didn’t want to write something sappy, but something that captured how messy and, yes, dangerous, love is.

Among the team are names that have demonstrated solid performances throughout the preseason, such as Ronnie Shaban, Andres Leal, Ben Byrd, James Kpainay, Emmanuel Coffie and a host of others. Coffie; is the favored striker, who has yet to score a goal. In the preseason, he saw action against the recently demoted Rangers F.C, and was able to secure an assist, but failed to find the back of the net. With his rich history of grabbing a title that only a few could claim (Maryland Player of the Decade), we look forward to seeing him in action on the 26th. On another note, the team will be missing two key players Ben Byrd (Starting Defender) and Jayd El Masri (Forward). A late addition (Aldo Rojas) to the team will definitely help in this starting weekend that City will be missing influential players like Arthur Olinga (Midfielder/Forward). With the consistent leadership of Pierre Hedji, the team looks armed and ready for competition.

Verlaine After Mons Now that the boxcars have ceased bickering past his barred window and the tracks

Verlaine After Mons

Now that the boxcars
have ceased bickering
past his barred window
and the tracks remain

impassibly distant
as old lovers,
he watches them hold.
“Nights,” he complains

in letters he is free,
at last, to write,
“are raw, sleep bitter.”
To his east, Paris

grates the evening white,
a grand carnival
cold as the moon,
familiar as the hiss

of boiling stew. And so
he writes: of forcing
food into his mouth,
of how he’ll leave the rails

of an old life,
use momentum to flee
this room, these letters
he will never mail,

the glow and pull
of a body not his own
and never present,
if never wholly gone.

———————————————

This poem was written and published (one of six I managed to place after my MFA) in the mid-90s.

I was reading Rimbaud heavily and a little Verlaine (a very little), and used their story as a mask to write about the end of a five-year relationship: I thought we’d marry; she had to move on. It took me about three years to write about it, and then in disguise.

I was also thinking about Rimbaud’s abandonment of poetry (allegedly accompanied by the statement, “I must become a modern man”) and wrangling with what it would take, post-MFA, to put poetry and teaching aside (I couldn’t get a job and placing poems was rare) and find another way to make a living.

The poem, perhaps, deals with these things. Mons is the city in Belgium where Verlaine was imprisoned after shooting and lightly wounding Rimbaud. The poem imagines him after his release, living somewhere west of Paris (perhaps even in England, where he soon found himself). The thoughts and words I ascribe to him are entirely made up.

MONTREAL – Points leaders Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas roared to their second win of the season in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, prevailing in Saturday’s Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The win marked the 150th victory in all forms of motorsports for Chip Ganassi Racing.

The Pruett-Rojas pairing started second in the featured Daytona Prototype class and led the final 37 laps in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley. Pruett drove the anchor leg, passing Ryan Dalziel’s No. 8 Duncan Starworks Motorsport Ford/Riley for the lead just past the halfway mark, then kept the lead after the final series of pit stops several minutes later.

Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty, who won the pole in Friday’s qualifying, took second in the No. 99 GAINSCO Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP, 22.902 seconds behind at the end of the two-hour race. Gurney capitalized when Ozz Negri gave up second place for a final pit stop for fuel with four minutes left in the No. 60 Liveon.com/Curb Records Ford/Riley from Michael Shank Racing.

The No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP of David Donohue and Paul Tracy finished third, rallying from a first-lap, first-turn spin.

Dalziel took a hit in the points when he spun in Turn 10, collecting Ricky Taylor in their spirited battle for third place with 27 minutes left. Dalziel was given a 15-second penalty for rough driving. His eighth-place finish dropped him to 18 points behind Pruett and Rojas.

Robin Liddell and John Edwards won a close-quarters battle in the GT class, scoring his second victory of the season and fourth in Montreal in the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R. Liddell finished just .569 seconds ahead of the No. 69 FXDD AIM Autosport Team Ferrari of Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal.

Enchiladas Rojas with Jeanette Maldonado
Story and Photos by Dania Pulido

When it comes to cooking, St. Mary’s University student Jeanette Maldonado takes the whole enchilada—literally!

The junior Biology major freed up some time in her busy schedule to talk about the three F’s: food, her future, and all around fun at St. Mary’s while she prepared a particularly special enchilada dish for dinner.

Maldonado, a Laredo, Texas native, may be petite in frame, but don’t let this fool you.

Both her taste buds and work ethic are just as spicy as her enchiladas.

Enrolled as a full-time student, she somehow manages to balance a job in the school’s biology department and is currently preparing for her MCAT exam to gain entry to medical school upon graduation.

Maldonado hopes to become a dermatologist one day and believes St. Mary’s is just the place to help her make that dream come true.

“I really like the small size of the school and the professors. They take the time to help you personally and care about your progress,” says the third-year student.

Some of the only breaks she gets from her hectic schedule are to cook meals for herself, so Jenny has more than one reason to enjoy the task.

“I love to eat buffalo wings and anything with a lot of cheese, but I especially enjoy cooking spaghetti and other pastas,” she says.

“I crave Mexican food the most, though. My mom taught me how to cook, and I prefer to eat homemade food because I like to have control over what goes into my body,” continues the health-conscious student.

After all those biology courses, who could blame her?

The enchilada dish she chose to prepare is a particularly special one, and is rare to come by.

“I can only make these enchiladas every once in a while when I drive back to Laredo or my parents come to visit me because my grandmother makes the chile sauce,” she explains.

“It has a very distinct and tasty flavor, so I like to make the most of the sauce and the dish.”

We’ll be sure to make the most of it as well!

Ingredients

2 c goat cheese

28 oz can of chile colorado

1 onion

5 corn tortillas

2-3 T oil

Directions
Pour 2-3 T of oil into a medium-sized pan. Cut 4-5 small pieces of the onion and place into the pan to give flavor to the oil. Pour some of the chile colorado onto a plate. Take the first tortilla and soak it in the chile sauce. Pick up the tortilla and place it into the pan to heat in the oil. Once it is heated, remove it and place into on a separate plate. Repeat steps 1-3 with all five tortillas. Once all the tortillas are soaked red and heated, sprinkle a desired amount of cheese onto the middle of the tortilla and roll it up to hold the cheese inside. Repeat this step until all the enchiladas are done. Sprinkle cheese on top of the finished dish and enjoy! Makes 2 servings.

It pays to hang out at the dance studio!I had thought about skipping dance class last night because I’m getting ready for a big trip to Europe in a week. I’ve been packing, making lists, getting all my reservations made and printed out…just in case. Making copies of everything.

But hanging out at D’Amico Dance studio after class always brings nice surprises. Last night, Sara Lopez and Albir Rojas, from Madrid, Spain, gave us a HOT demo of Kizomba. I hadn’t heard of them before but boy oh boy, will I remember them now!
