Hy en estadística me ha dado por preguntarle a la profesora por la fórmula para obtener la probabilidad de que salga un determinado resultado, así que para ayudaros un poquito a hacer vuestras predicciones de cara a una tarde frente a un mapa o talero, y teniendo en cuenta que hace falta un poco de tiempo para sacarlo por cuenta de la vieja (o yo no me cosqué), lo pongo por aquí. En este caso, es para sacar fuerza irresistible en whf con 3D6, es decir, al menos dos 6.

P(66NU6N6UN66) = 1/6 · 1/6 · 5/6 + 1/6 · 5/6 · 1/6 + 5/6 · 1/6 · 1/6 + 1/6 · 1/6 · 1/6 = 16/216 = 2/27

Es decir, de cada 27 tiradas de 3D6 que hagamos, en 2 saldrá un doble  un triple 6.

Todo este párrafo esá aplicado al 3D6. La probabilidad, obviamente, es la misma para todos los demás resultados. Para hallar la probabilidad de que salgan otros resultados, sólo hay que multiplicar lo que nos ha dado antes (2/27) por el número de resultados favorables de entre 6. Por ejemplo, la probabilidad de que nos salga un doble cualquiera con 3D6 e de 12/27.

Para tiradas que no sean de 3D6, hay que hacer lo mismo siguiendo esta fórmula para hallar la probabilidad de, al menos un doble, en la tirada, pero añadiéndole un ·5/6 más a cada uno de las multiplicaciones (excepto la última, a la que se añaden ·1/6) y añadiendo tambén otra multiplicación más igual que las anteriores por cada dado que añadamos a a tirada. Una vez obtenida la probabilidad de cualquier doble.

Paratriples o cuáduples, sólo hay que poner en cada términ de la suma (cada multiplicación) un 1/6 en vez de 5/6.

Do you ever have moments where you step back and reflect, “Wow, my kids are going to have memories of the holidays that are done this way, with me as the mother.” It sounds like a very obvious statement, but there is something really strange about it, when you allow yourself to fully inhabit this reality. We all grew up with our own family traditions, and we associate the holidays with how we were raised to celebrate them. But as adults, it is not always possible, or even desirable, to recreate or continue these family traditions when we now have in-laws, distance, divorce, or other factors that change the way we do things. So I stop this Thanksgiving and take a look around me: this is the way, so far at least, my kids will remember this holiday.

And I am the adult in this picture. Somehow when I think about Thanksgiving, I still picture myself as the child, sitting in the backseat for the long drive to my grandmother’s house, running around with my cousins and putting on plays, eating lots of dessert and passing out on the way home. I am lucky to have nice memories of this holiday, and I will always treasure them. But now it’s my kids’ turn. It is truly amazing to try to step into my children’s shoes– see the world through their eyes. Wow, I think, they are just taking this all in, going along with whatever plans we have made, finding their place in the way of things. What an incredible experience, to be a child. You never know what’s going to happen next, not really. You understand some, but not all, of what goes on around you, and while you can’t articulate exactly how you feel, you know when you feel complete and happy.

Maybe it’s not so different from being an adult after all.

The difference, though, is that now we do have some choices, which, of course, come with many responsibilities. My intent is to not get lost in all these responsibilities, but to still feel the wonder I felt as a child, realizing again and again that, wow, we are really the actors on somebody else’s stage, not only the central character of our own.

After all the frolics and hot discussion on the CILIP subscriptions issue, I thought I’d turn back to something more introspective.  Or rather I did when I started writing this post 6 weeks ago.  or was it 7.  Yes a lot of books have floated by under the bridge (and that’s just in Cumbria) since then.

That said as you might have gathered from my various social networks I’ve recently moved into a new position.  Two months today actually by my reckoning; although thanks to swine flu my entrance to the post was a delayed one.  And the change?  Well it’s been a bit of a shock to the system in some ways, and an absolute delight in others.

While I’ve functioned as a manager in all but name for many years in many different capacities, it was only at the start of this year that I actually got the title into part of my job.  Now though this is my main role on a daily basis – and as I suspected it’s a very different kettle of fish to what I was doing previously.  I’ve carried over some aspects of my previous post, the managerial bits, while leaving behind those elements of subject support that I used to do.  But there’s also been a whole new portfolio of challenges awaiting for me; perhaps upper most among them the fact that now I’m one of THEM (be it only middle management THEM) and really no longer one of US.

I could write about how this has changed my perspectives of people I’ve known for a year or so, how my working relationships have utterly altered.  Maybe I will in time, and heavens knows this blog could do with a bit more regular content.  However, what I thought I’d write about is the change in my working life from a situation where, to be frank, I spent more days bored and looking around for something to do than doing something.  And this isn’t a situation I like finding myself in – I’m generally only happy if I’m doing something – at home or at work – that engages me on different levels.  Come to think of it I’m only really happy if I’m solving three crises at once, while trying to hold down a day job and making a pot of jam at the same time.  And so it seems a move into management is just what I needed!

Why?  Well those of you reading this with any kind of managerial responsibilities or experience will know that the shift from being responsible for your own work, to suddenly being responsible for many other people’s work is a big one.  My early days in the post felt a lot like firefighting, and I kept stressing that I wasn’t getting my job done.

Then it struck me – firefighting and helping my team is (at least in part) my job now.  There are of course things I do need to do myself, that no one but me is going to be able to do as well, and it’s taken quite some time to get to a position where I can spend time doing them.  I can certainly say that no from the moment I walk through the door in the morning, to when I slink off at night, that my talents are pretty much fully engaged.  It’s not just managing the staff and my own time, there’s the fact that I’m still learning so much of what my section does for the library.  There are moments when I think I’ll never know it all.  Maybe I won’t, but I do need to understand how, why and what the team does.  Otherwise how can I make an objective judgement when someone brings me a problem?  How can I advise my bosses on the situations and developments that pervade the environment my team works in?  I need to develop this understanding, and so it’s one more part of my day being occupied.

So bored?  Fat chance!  Every day brings a new challenge, some new insight into an activity.  I honestly don’t think I’ve been asked the same question twice in two months – be it from a reader, a team member or a colleague from another section.  I thrive on this challenge, which does give me a slight pause when I think about the future.  Will there ever come a time when I feel comfortable in the role, where everything is natural, almost runs itself?  If it does, chances are thats when ennui will set in again – but have no fear, that’s the point at which I’ll start casting my eye around for something even more difficult to do…

Unii oameni sunt nascuti sa fie dansatori. Altii sunt nascuti sa se dea pe role. Unii le fac pe amindoua. Dar felul cum te misti pe role este unic cum unica este amprenta unui deget. Deci de cite ori vrei sa te misti pe ritmuri de salsa, raggae, rock sau hip-hop rolele vor adauga originalitate in miscarea ta.
4. Poti sa zbori
Majoritatea oamenilor traiesc respectind gravitatia – se tin de bara cind urca scarile blocului, transpira abundent cind avionul cu care calatoresc intra intr-o zona turbulenta si in general evita situatiile care i-ar putea face sa-si piarda echilibrul. Altii rid de legile gravitatiei, urcindu-se pe cele mai subtiri si instabile lucruri sau aruncindu-se in aer cu miscari sofisticate, incercind apoi sa aterizeze cit mai artistic sau macar onorabil.
5. Lumea este patinoarul tau
Rolele au fost inventate ca o alternativa la sezonul rece de catre un jucator de hockey din Minnessota. Dar oamenii au vazut imediat in aceasta un mijloc de transport si de recreere. Mai rapide decat mersul pe jos, mai manevrabile decit bicicleta, rolele sunt mijlocul ideal de a te adapta unui loc nou ori de cite ori mergi in vacanta sau macar de a descoperii imprejurimile dintr-o perspectiva noua.
6. Nu polueaza
Imagineaza-ti un oras fara masini, doar cu roleri, pietoni si biciclisti. Ce liniste ar fi, ce aer curat! Mergind cu rolele in locul masinii este un mod de a dovedii ca iti pasa de mediul inconjurator.
7. Iti faci noi prieteni
Inline skatingul este o ocazie grozava de a-ti face noi prieteni si de a cunoaste lume noua. Skatingul rupe diferenta dintre generatii si uneste familiile mai bine si mai sanatos decit o face, de exemplu, televizorul. Cu peste 30 de milioane de skateri numai in USA si mai bine de 20 de milioane in intreaga lume ai toate sansele sa-ti gasesti perechea.
8. Un sport grozav pentru tineri si mai putin tineri
Daca poti merge pe jos perioade mari de timp fara sa te impiedici si sa cazi, atunci ai echilibrul de care ai nevoie pentru a deveni un roler. E la fel ca mersul pe bicicleta. Odata ce ai invatat nu vei mai uita niciodata. Deci nu esti niciodata prea batran pentru a invata. S-ar putea sa te surprinda si pe tine.
9. Este sanatos
Inline skatingul, spre deosebire de alergat, provoaca cu 50 la suta mai putine socuri ligamentelor, spune un studiu al Universitatii din Massachusetts.

China executed a dairy farmer and a milk salesman Tuesday for their roles in the sale of contaminated baby formula — severe punishments that Beijing hopes will assuage public anger, reassure importers and put to rest one of the country’s worst food safety crises.

The men were the only people put to death in a scheme to boost profits by lacing milk powder with the industrial chemical melamine; 19 other people were convicted and received lesser sentences. At least six children died after drinking the adulterated formula, and more than 300,000 were sickened.

Beijing has responded swiftly and comprehensively to eliminate problems in its food production chain that have spawned protests at home and threatened its export-reliant economy. The milk powder contamination struck a nerve with the public because so many children were affected, but was only one in a series of product recalls and embarrassing disclosures of lax public health safeguards.

Melamine, which is used to make plastics and fertilizers, has also been found added to pet food, eggs and fish feed, although not in levels considered dangerous to humans. The chemical, which like protein is high in nitrogen, fooled inspectors. It can cause kidney stones and kidney failure.

China has tightened regulations and increased inspections on producers and exporters in cooperation with U.S. officials, who have noted a drop in the number of product recalls on Chinese exports.

But Beijing continues to struggle to regulate small and illegally run operations, often blamed for introducing chemicals and additives into the food chain. The country has 450,000 registered food production and processing enterprises, but many — about 350,000 — employ just 10 people or fewer. The U.N. said in a report last year that the small enterprises present many of China’s greatest food safety challenges.

Zhang Yujun, the farmer, was executed for endangering public safety, and Geng Jinping for producing and selling toxic food, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Much of the phony protein powder that Zhang and Geng produced and sold ended up at the defunct Sanlu Group Co., at the time one of China’s biggest dairies.

Xinhua said an announcement of the execution had been issued by the Shijiazhuang Municipal Intermediate People’s Court, although a court clerk who answered the phone Tuesday said he was unable to confirm the sentences had been carried out. Most executions in China are performed by firing squad.

Of the others tried and sentenced in January in the scandal, Sanlu’s general manager, Tian Wenhua, was given a life sentence after pleading guilty to charges of producing and selling fake or substandard products.

Three other former Sanlu executives were given between five years and 15 years in prison.

There was outrage after news spread of the doctored milk in September 2008, both because of the extent of the contamination and allegations that the government prevented the news from breaking until after the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The cover-up accusations were never publicly investigated, and authorities have since harassed and detained activist parents pushing lawsuits demanding higher compensation and the punishment of government officials. Families were offered a one-time payout — ranging from of 2,000 yuan ($293) to 200,000 yuan ($29,000), depending on the severity of the case — to not pursue lawsuits.

Tuesday’s executions brought some comfort to Li Xinquan, who lost one of her 8-month-old twin daughters who was fed with melamine-tainted formula from Sanlu. Li has campaigned to force authorities to admit negligence and provide fair compensation.

“They deserved it. This is the punishment they have received from the government,” said Li, whose other daughter survived because she was breast fed.

Another parent, Wang Zhenping, also voiced satisfaction with the executions, reflecting strong support for the death penalty in China, which executes more people annually than the rest of the world combined.

Wang, who said his 2-year-old son appeared to have recovered from melamine poisoning, rejected the compensation offer and said he was growing weary of the struggle.

“I feel like it doesn’t really matter now,” he said.

U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said last month that Beijing has made progress in increasing product safety.

The numbers of consumer recalls of toys imported from China had fallen from more than 80 in fiscal 2008 to about 40 in fiscal 2009, Tenenbaum said.

“Chinese suppliers and U.S. importers are now on notice from both governments that it is a mistake to depend on good intentions and a few final inspections to ensure compliance with safety requirements,” she told a conference in Beijing.

‘Working women who provide the majority of the household’s income continue to articulate themselves as the ones who “see” household messes and needs as a way to retain claim to an element of traditional female identity,’ said Dr Rebecca Meisenbach, professor of communication at Missouri University.

Dr Meisenbach questioned 15,000 American female breadwinners for the study, to be published in the journal Sex Roles this week.

The days of doing business as we have been doing in the past are gone. We can no longer afford to continue using traditional approaches in managing our companies. Design is such a catch-all term that it’s well worth making your excuses and leaving if you find yourself in a conversation attempting to define it categorically.

Design is hard to define because the activity of designing is so distributed and diverse. To complicate things further, design is really a short hand for the human inclination to solve problems, improve our environments and find ways to progress. As a result people transport the idea to wherever it’s needed, defining design by its context.  As designers themselves venture beyond the confines of the formal brief and into unfamiliar sectors such as local government and public services, the definition of design and the selling of its value take an increasing amount of intellectual effort and artfulness; while its definition moves further out of reach.

The challenge of definition endures – but without definition it’s hard to move forward from here. Such a useful concept demands interpretation in order to make it usable. The result, we make design mean what we need it to mean. It suits me, for example, to use design as a verb and define it as a social activity not a solitary or esoteric one. My interest is in the role of design in catalysing change and making change tangible.

Hello blogger and internet searchers. This is my second post and today I think i will cover the second logical topic to cover after explaining common phrases and that is, races! Yes it is time I finally tell you who and what these different players in this RPG are. Now, there are quite a few of them so I will only cover three and some origin races if I have the time. I do tend to like to ramble on a lot so this may be a long post so bare with me. Now then, lets begin with the…

Humans

The humans are the oldest race in the universe. They are the only origin race to not divide into multiple sub-races. They are the most accomplished, arguably the most evolved, and are the most varied race in the known abyss. They have been known to be the most cruel and the most compassionate, the most violent of warriors and the most peaceful of diplomats. They are the only origin race to die quickly, there lifespans being about 50-80 years.

Dwarves

Dwarves were not exatly enslaved by the human empire more like they were born into it because there ancestors and origin race, the stonekind, were enslaved by rimefire. They are a sub-race of the stonekind and inherited their wisdom and ability to create amazing weapons and armor. They are all ruled over by one King and keep, for the most part, in the mountains of the north and the west. They not only stay in these mountains for the tactical advantage they provide (should they be attacked) but also because they spend much of there early and late life underground digging and searching, hoping to find artifacts or books that will tell them more about the stonekind. They have long lifespans and can live as long as a thousand years (this was found out in an experiment done by RimeFire) but the average lifespan is shorter only around 500-750 years.

Elves

The elves were the second race to be enslaved by Rimefire. They are decendents of an ancient race whos name has been lost to the ages. Slender and tall by comparison to humans. They were enslaved mostly not to work but to as a show of force to others of their home plane. They are the most advance civilization technologicly, save for the ramaining rimefire cities, there cities are small but are more about expansion upward. They are most often seen in the forest as it reminds them of the place they long ago called home. There home plane of existance can be seen in the skies at night and many believe this is why they build their cities upward and keep there oldest at the top. The elves average lifetime is about half that of a dwarf, they can live up to 550-600 years but the average lifespan is around 200-350 years.

etc. are illusions
though these things are experiences
though these things are in your consciousness
they are not lasting real or true
they are suffering of ignorance
and can easily be cured with love
yes
but even where the illusions persist
source is there
yes
even where the unwanted suffering persists
source is there
realize that you can give up the
wondering give up the concern
give up the stress of and resistance to these illusions
for they are not real
death is not real
the conditioned suffering you have accepted poverty and starvation to be is not real
YES THERE IS KINDNESS AND LOVE IN GIVING TO THOSE IN NEED
YES THERE IS NEED FOR THESE ACTIONS
BUT NOT TO GLORIFY POVERTY OR STARVATION
NOT TO GIVE THEM POWER
SIMPLY TO EXPRESS LOVE
REALIZE THAT WHERE POVERTY AND STARVATION ARE NOT MET
THERE IS NO GREAT TRAVESTY
WHY
BECAUSE THESE EXPERIENCES ARE WHAT THEY ARE AND PART OF THE WHOLE
PART OF THE BALANCE
PART OF REALITY
FOR THOSE WHO ARE COMPELLED WITH LOVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL THING SOURCE CHOOSES TO EXPERIENCE THROUGH THEM

Last night around 6:30 my 17 yr. old son called.  Still only 5 min. to talk. I tried to get as much information as I could in that short time.  He said his school was pretty easy, he’ll still be able to get his credits to graduate this year and said everyone was still being very nice to him and helping him out. He also said the food was great.   ( I had even heard from others that when the kids got back they had gained weight.)  It really sounds like his is in a good place. Much better than running the roads and getting into trouble with his friends. They also have “Reflection” for 1 hour a day and will attend the campus Church on Sunday.

Purpose:

The Drama Club has been established to provide an opportunity for students interested in theater to participate in all aspects of play production.  Students interested in performance, direction, design, technical support, backstage crafts, publicity, etc., are encouraged to join.

Alright! Finally something that may be of interest to my 11 yr. old son and a great role to play… Santa Claus!  He tells me this morning as he walks out of the house catch the bus, “Oh yeah, Mama… I quit the Drama Club.”  I said, “Why?” with the sound of disappointment and then he said, “I gave it to another boy that was better.” then he runs out to catch the bus.

After 3 weeks of practicing three times a week and myself even working with him. He just quits? Still not sure what I’ll say to him when he returns home of if I should go speak to the Drama Club teacher to see if there is more to the story.   Still a little disappointed.. I’ll send an update.
