I have loved the Rolling Stones literally since birth. I spent my toddler days wobbling around to Jumpin’ Jack Flash. I’m not joking. Keith Richards is my favorite human in existence.

Ο Ken Kesey οργάνωνε συχνά πάρτυ τα οποία ονόμαζε «Acid Tests». We do love a bit of celeb and yes, we do tend to focus on the more youthful stars of today but there can be no ignoring the transformation that Scottish singer Susan Boyle has gone through since her initial appearance on Britain’s Got Talent.

We all saw the show and we all saw thousands of people sniggering in their seats as Susan had a pre-performance chat with the judges. The majority of viewers at home were probably having a wee chuckle to themselves as well as producers did their best to set our Susan up for a fall.

Well, the phrase ‘never judge a book by its cover’ sprung to mind as Susan delivered a jaw dropping performance that brought the audience to their feet and propelled her to superstar status within hours of it airing on national television and was very soon making it’s way around the world via You Tube.

It’s the perfect fairy tale story of someone who deserves to do well in life. It didn’t happen without a few aches and pains along the way but Susan Boyle finally released her album, I Dreamed A Dream, yesterday. It had already broken all records for the highest number of sales an album has ever received on pre-order and will no doubt break a few more before the end of the week.

Susan performed her version of the Rolling Stones’ Wild Horses on the X Factor on Sunday night receiving a standing ovation from the audience and a beaming smile from Simon Cowell, before jetting back over to the States to promote the album launch. What a difference an album deal and a bit of self confidence makes, you’d barely recognise her!

I had a dream last night that I made a video for a relative’s birthday. It was being screened in a large auditorium where the family on my mum’s side was gathered and I was so embarrassed of the video because it was tacky and irrelevant so I ran out of the hall. My late grandfather now eleven years passed, was playing an acoustic guitar by a gutter. My cousin, Shanaz, and I sat beside him and the three of us sang ‘Wild Horses’ together. I harmonised but wasn’t very good. I think we sang the whole song then I laid on the grates of the gutter and my grandfather laid on top of me till I pushed him off. He was so heavy. I don’t remember if he said anything to me.

The photograph above is of the family plot in Keningau. I’m one of those people who would rather take photos on film rather than digitally most times. I didn’t do too well with this roll of film but of the six that came out, they were all taken at the cemetary. It wasn’t eerie.

To me, ‘Wild Horses’ will always be about death. Some people think of it as a break up song but I think the song has to be about death. It’s about a separation whilst talking about a reconciliation that will happen in a distant future (let’s do some living, after we die). When Mick Jagger sings “childhood living is easy to do” it resonates that we are young whenever we are alive. ‘Old’ is only age by comparison. ‘Old’ is when you can’t do anything for yourself and people want you to retire too. It’s when your body’s got no more life to live and your childhood programming is so outdated you couldn’t cope in this era if you tried.

I think ‘Wild Horses’ by the Rolling Stones and ‘Something in the Way’ by Nirvana would be my death songs. ‘Something in the Way’ because Cobain vividly depicts this permanent space where things are upside down or made unimportant. I think that’s what death would be like, the opposite of life. In life, things are always the right way up and everything is very very important. Also in a lot of ways, doesn’t life often get in the way of life?

I never really got to know my late grandfather but he was always a figure that hovered above in life. In death, he looms just as high above me. It was the first death I’d ever experienced and till today, I don’t think of him as dead as much as I do, dying. He’s not alive and he’s not gone either. He’s constantly existing in a realm of death therefore he is ‘dying’ as opposed to living. The logic is that when he was alive, when I didn’t see him, I’d think of him. Now that I don’t see him I still think of him. He comes back in my dreams from time to time in different characters and different ways, taking up space in my subconscious, personifying guilt, nostalgia and goodness. It’s always a comfort to see him. I don’t know if he would really approve of me if he knew me intimately, hence the guilt. I think that in real life he would find me odd or wayward but in my dreams, he likes me because I’m like him. Every time I find someone I like or can look up to I find that they describe me in some ways. Darwin was right. Attraction is narcissism.

After my grandfather finished playing the guitar in the dream, some of my friends were a few feet away, trying to fish agave worms out from tequila bottles so I went to help them. When I turned around, my grandfather had gone. I asked Shanaz where he was and she told me he was drunk and had gone off to the mosque to marry ‘Aunty Yuz’ and said that as a joke, he was going to change her name to ‘Fuck Yuz’ after they got married. Erm, yeah. The irony is my grandfather had three wives. I guess one more wouldn’t hurt.

Me and my strange dreams. I was getting shot at with a nail gun by someone’s schizophrenic father the night before. Sheesh.

BERLUSCONI ROCK STAR DELL’ANNO SECONDO IL MAGAZINE “ROLLING STONE”

ANSA – Berlusconi batte Obama e il Papa. Listening to the magnificent Susan Boyle adaptation of Wild horses of the Rolling stones. one of those  songs which one says how dare you  even thinking of touching such a tune. or lyrics. but she  takes it with her penetrating voice and she takes me to those wild  Mongolian landscapes  where you promised      you’ll teach me one day how to ride a wild horse. we tried in Israel when Tomer took us to his family stable  in the south and I had  been handed a  horse that I couldn’t control and  dropped me on a big stone with terrible pains and black signs for over 6 months. you fell inlove with me than realising you cant lose me. I fell inlove with you the  week after when you arrived to the hospital with bad  blood  and a memory of a kiss next to an  angry horse.

we never tried those wild horses in Mongolia  but I fell inlove with  you again and again and again. and now I’m listening to  this brave  lady and know that its time  to dare again.

“Wild Horses” became a hit for the Rolling Stones back in 1971. Ever since then the song has been covered numerous times, including recently by Susan Boyle. While there are many great covers of his song, I’ve always liked the Sundays version of it that was on their 1992 album Blind.  I had never even heard of the Sundays or heard the song until I saw the 1996 thriller flick Fear (which is a surprisingly well-made movie.) on TV a couple of years ago, and they had the song playing in the background of one of the more infamous scenes of the movies (It’s best if I don’t go into detail.)

It’s really too bad that this cover never became a hit for this band.

The Pointer Sisters had an enviable run at the top of the charts in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  Their hits included “Neutron Dance” and the most famous cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire.”  The albums that all of these songs appeared on were produced by 1970s über-producer Richard Perry.   One of the most successful music producers ever, Perry was no stranger to the upper reaches of the charts – he produced the hit albums Ringo (1973) for Ringo Starr, No Secrets (1972) for Carly Simon and many others.

Oddly, one Pointer Sisters album with Perry at the helm made no impression at all – in fact, when Priority was released in 1979, it disappeared virtually without a trace.  The sisters were still riding high off the No. 1 smash “Fire” and its album Energy from the previous year when Perry took them into the studio for this followup.

Priority is of interest because its songs are all rock covers – the Pointers tackle tunes by Ian Hunter, Bob Seger, Graham Parker, Richard Thompson, the Band and the Rolling Stones.  And Perry surrounded them with hot L.A. session musicians like guitarists Waddy Wachtel and Dan Dugmore, drummer Rick Marotta (all of them played with Linda Ronstadt), Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne and, on a few songs, Stones pianist Nicky Hopkins.

Of course, with all of this high-powered artillery, the songs do rock.  After the intro to Seger’s “All Your Love,” you expect Ronstadt to start belting it out.  But the Pointer Sisters (they take turns on lead vocals) get lost in the shuffle – they seem rather clueless as to what to do with Hunter’s “Who Do You Love” or Keith Richards’ signature “Happy.”  The one that does seem to work is “The Fever” by their old buddy Bruce Springsteen.

Undaunted, Perry and the sisters would rebound in 1980 with “He’s So Shy,” in 1981 with “Slow Hand,” and in 1984 with the blockbuster album Break Out (with “Neutron Dance,” “Jump (For My Love)” and “I’m So Excited.”   I once gave a cassette copy of Priority to somebody in a bar band, suggesting they learn some of these songs; after doing so, they did rather well for themselves.  But they eventually broke up – like the Pointer Sisters.

Make something with their image on it, someone will buy it.
Simple right?
Even back when they were marketing the first “Rock and Roll Icon” of all time, Elvis Presley, you could buy
Teddy Bear perfume, hankies, guitars, record players, hound dog stuffed animals, you name it.

The Colonel made it, and made sure it sold.

It was then a precedent was set that has carried through till today.

No shortage of Hannah Montana dolls, guitars, wigs, or games on the shelves these days heh?

The selling of the Rolling Stones, “The Not So Lovable Mop Tops,” presented its own set of problems and challenges for Andrew Loog Oldham and his team.
What do we create and manufacture that fits their image?
And more importantly, will anybody buy it?
The primary audience for this kind of merchandise was usually young girls, the majority of the fan base.
And although the Stones had their fair share of female fans, The Beatles were probably easier to sell anyone and everyone.

The Rolling Stones were the first band of their time where you
could actually find boys screaming at their shows.

Though The Fab Four had it all.
Dolls, wigs, hairspray, combs, notebooks, pencils, ice cream bars, gum cards, record players, guitars, drums, candy, games, you name it.
Literally thousands of items.

The Rolling Stones ended up with but a handful.
I guess Andrew found that their “bad boy” image in the end wasn’t all that marketable.

Hell, I would bought the stuff.
And fans and collectors are still buying it now.

Only it’s a tad more expensive these days.

These are the rarest of all Stones collectibles.
And believe it or not, would command in the thousands if sold today.

But Mick needed to test himself in 1985 by going solo for the first time in his career
with She’s the Boss.

When The Rolling Stones signed with CBS Records in 1983, one of the options available to them was for individual projects, and Jagger – ready to spread his wings after recording exclusively with his famous band for twenty years – eagerly began working on She’s the Boss.

Following the release of Undercover, Jagger began composing material for his first solo project, sanctioning the help of various musician friends in the studio when recording began in May 1984. Of those involved were Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Carlos Alomar and Herbie Hancock, while Jagger would share production duties with Bill Laswell and Nile Rodgers.

Keenly aware of the current musical trends – and taking advantage of his freedom – Jagger endeavored to make She’s the Boss sound hip and contemporary, giving the album a very mid-1980s character with its use of synthesizers and drum machines.

Keith Richards, Jagger’s longtime musical partner in The Rolling Stones, was not pleased that Jagger was pursuing solo work, feeling that their band should be each others’ first priority. The growing friction between both musicians would erupt – in a most publicized way – in 1986, before they resolved their differences a couple of years later.

She’s the Boss was released in February 1985 – preceded by its lead song “Just Another Night”. Both the album and its first single became worldwide hits, with “Just Another Night” reaching #1 on the US Mainstream Rock chart and #12 on the US pop chart, and She’s the Boss going to #6 in the UK and #13 in the US, where it went platinum. Follow-up single “Lucky In Love” would be a Top 40 US hit. Although critical response to the album was warm, many later reviewers consider She’s the Boss – with its distinct 1980s production techniques – to sound somewhat dated in style.[citation needed]

The success of the album – impacted by Jagger’s solo appearance at Live Aid that July and his rush-recorded duet hit cover of “Dancing In The Street” with David Bowie – influenced Jagger to record a successor, Primitive Cool, which would be released in 1987.

Although originally released by CBS, She’s the Boss was acquired and reissued by Atlantic Records in 1993 following the release of Jagger’s third album, Wandering Spirit.

In 1986, Jamaican reggae singer Patrick Alley attempted to sue Jagger over the song “Just Another Night,” which Alley claims he had recorded in 1979 and released on his 1982 album, A Touch of Patrick Alley. Alley claimed that Sly Dunbar (who played drums on She’s the Boss) also played on his recording. The case was cleared in 1988, with Jagger stating “My reputation is really cleared. If you’re well known, people stand up and take shots at you.”
