Using Dual-Type Twisting: Palm-rolling & Interlocking

I used to think that I would never interlock for two reasons: (1) I thought it took much time (2) I

I used to think that I would never interlock for two reasons: (1) I thought it took much time (2) I was native to only palm-rolling. It appeared interesting and tempting at the same time. Why? Because you didn’t have to worry about your locs unraveling at the root….or at all, for that matter. However, I did not want to worry about the texture of my locs changing or run the risk having little bumpy knots from inaccurately interlocking. So why the change of heart you ask? Well, I shall tell you why (very short story, actually). One afternoon, I was riding back from another county with a couple of coworkers. While they were yacking on their phones, the slightly irritable-from-hunger My4tress needed something to dwindle time away while she waited for the stoplight to change for the turning lane in 5 o’clock traffic (instead of twiddling my thumbs). I subconsciously started playing with my locs of course. Next thing you know, I was weaving the root (interlocking) the back locs. They’re usually the ones to unravel at the root much quicker than the rest of my locs. As I felt for what I’ve done, I realized that I did it pretty well; no lumpy knots. I rolled the loc in one direction to see how it would’ve looked/felt if I palm-rolled the interlocked part later. No difference. Hmm! I was quite pleased. So I learned that if you do not interlock too tightly and not in the same direction, you have a nice result that will not change even if you palm roll later. You want to interlock as closely as possible to the already locked part of your locs. However, if you did it incorrectly, you will end of with:

(1) separated roots

(2) if palm-rolled, a twisted part

(3) a hole in the middle of your loc. (I put a q-tip inside of the hole so you could identify it easier.)

FYI: Interlocking becomes addictive when your hands are idle or if you don’t have nothing to do (lol) and doesn’t take as long as you think.

Next thing you know, all of my locs have been interlocked. So, I washed my hair just last week expected to roll some roots, when I looked at the mirror and barely saw any puffiness (a sign of a root(s) needing retwisting). That saved me a lot of time.

(I’m going to try to do a vid on interlocking; however, letting you know now that I’m not an expert interlocker, lol.)

Lovin’ ’til the morning, then I’m gone, I’m gone

I took the city ’bout one A.M, loaded, loaded

So I have taken a few days off from blogging… mostly because life has been a bit crazy busy-

So I have taken a few days off from blogging… mostly because life has been a bit crazy busy- what? I had a 3 photo commissions and a calendar to design over the weekend and you know what, it isn’t as easy to get through that much work anymore! I remember the days when that would be just the perfect amount of work in a weekend to keep me busy, how times change, lol. So the blogging slipped, it was the lowest on the pile, these things happen.

The past three nights have been glorious, glorious, glorious. When I type glorious it does not do justice to how it sounds in my head… in my head it is like angels are singing and you can hear trumpets (not too loud though so that they don’t wake the baby!). She has gone down with under 30 minutes of protesting and has stayed asleep until 4:30 am, after which she eats and goes back to sleep until 8:00 am. I can’t ask for much more right now to be honest. Sure that 4:30 am feeding is a small jab in the bum, but as long as I get to bed at a decent time it’s really not that bad at all to be honest. Like my friend Kim said, I only have so many nights left that she is going to want to hang out with me She is napping great as well, I am just so freaking proud of her right now. We are on day 27.

On Sunday night when Everly was having her last feeding of the day, I went to burp her and noticed a large, oddly shaped lump on her back… no don’t worry, it’s not bad… it was her cow bathtub toy. Now how in the hell did that end up there you might ask?? well I asked the same thing to her dad, as he’s the one who dressed her! She has been obsessed with this little cow lately, it is her favourite toy. She takes it into the bath and of course holds on to it when you get her out. Somehow the cow made it into her sleepers and he didn’t know (LOL!). I showed him what I pulled out and we both started to laugh, he looked at her and said you little sneak! He figured she was hiding the cow in there so that she could play with it later in her crib on the sly… tricky baby. It still makes me giggle thinking about it; tops the time he handed her to me without a diaper on (he he he).

The cow in question!

I have been trying to recall for a few days if anyone has ever told me how tricky it is to feed a baby. Maybe it’s just my baby though, or is it babies in general? She is SO handsy, lol. I know she is curious and wants to participate, but when her spoon gets slippery with food it’s a very slip and slidey tug of war that happens between the two of us. I try to pull the spoon out of her hands, but she has baby hulk strength. She also loves to put her fingers into her mouth and get food on them and rub it all over her face and hair and ears- today she almost had it in her eyes. When it’s her last feeding of the day I don’t really mind as she is going right into the tub and it’s a sensory experience, but in the middle of the day, when we are out, feeding can be tricky business. I have found it helps to have a buddy system- one person feeding and one person entertaining. I remind her that her hands stay down and that we don’t scratch our eyes out when our fingers have food on them, but she doesn’t listen to me, so I guess she will just have to learn for herself- it’s so messy, but so fun to watch

She is a rolling and pivoting machine right now. If you put her onto her back she immediately flips over onto her front so that she can get moving! For a brief moment in time today she was up on all fours, didn’t last long, but it happened. She has managed to move herself forward a few cm’s a few time, but only a few cm’s- moving your body is hard when you weigh 17 1/2 pounds and don’t have much muscle, lol. It’s so interesting to watch her plan her movements; she will look and think and look and think for a bit and then make her move. If she is successful the look and think gets shorter and shorter each time she tries the movement again- you can see the motor planning happening right before your very eyes. If she has challenges she tries and tries and then gets VERY angry if she is not able to do what she thinks she should be able to do, that’s usually when I pick her up and give her a snuggle

Come and get the cow!

Her dad let’s her wriggle a little bit longer than me and it is probably because of this that she ever makes any gains in her gross motor development at all. He says that I am too quick to rescue her, and he is probably right and it’s probably why he has seen most of her gross motor firsts before me- he pushes her a little bit harder. I think it’s good to have a balance between the two. I get so proud of her when she does something new, it feels awesome, but I think it feels even better to see the look on his face, it’s the way my dad looked at me when I got my BA and when I got married and when I introduced him to Everly. Daddies think that the sun rises and sets on their little girls and we little girls wouldn’t have it any other way

The little babe has now rolled over both ways. He has been rolling over tummy to back for a while now, but mostly that was his head tipping him over during tummy time. In the last few weeks, he finally started to enjoy being on his stomach and will look around and occasionally even smile which is a huge difference from the beginning. Tummy time on the floor was a time for screaming and tears – on people he tolerated being on his stomach, but the position seemed less than ideal. Then he started laughing when on his stomach and rolling over with a bit more intent. It wasn’t always speedy, but he got over. This morning when I went to get him out of his crib he was on his belly looking around. I didn’t see it, but he must have turned over after he woke up. I am sure we will spend most of today on the bed trying to get him to do it again.

It seems like he has changed so much just in the last 2 weeks. I had same baby, same baby, same baby, and then pow! all of a sudden I have a giggling, supper vocal flipping machine. It is awesome and I am so glad I am still home from work to see it all.

We were too much worried about Sudhir. In history, there is not a single case of a schizophrenic who

We were too much worried about Sudhir. In history, there is not a single case of a schizophrenic who has recoverd from his illness and been rehabilitated. How can he be an excepton?
This was like a wound. Some slight touch and it hurts.
I never tried to hide this fact. All people in our cirle knew about it. I did not have the guts to ask for girl for my son. All are afraid of a mad man, though we are all mad to some extent.
There are millions of people seeking His intervention,to help them against their fate. Can we expect Him to favour us against our enemy?
I decided to do shayanapradakshinam, of our Shiva, of CS puram village, where the temple compound is full of shrubs, to be cleaned once in a while, during festival. I did not mind it.
In the morning I had a dip in the river and went to the temple, in the wet condition with the bath towel arond my waiste. I made only one round. The pebbles and thorny weeds hurt me, but it was all right. When Murugan, the poojary saw me, he just smiled.
I felt happy, as if He had actully seen me rolling in the ground, and felt pity for us helpless old father and mother.
I was ready to spend the rest of my life in the village, as a sincere devotee.

An old, pot bellied Krishna Iyer there, gave me a volume of Bhagavatam, with translation in simple Malayalam prose, in addition to the Samskritam text, which I was not very eager to read. Having nothing else to read, I began reading it and then found it very absorbing. The whole narration is in flash back. The motive is disenchantment with life.
There was no news of Krishna, who had gone back to Dwaraka, after the end of the horrible war.
Arjuna was sent to enquire about their savior, without whom, they would have lost the war. After six months, he returned, but could not face his brother.
Why, what happened?- enquired the elder brother.
Tears rolled down Arjuna’s cheeks. With much difficulty, he began;
When I was coming back, ordinary ruffians attacked me. I was helpless. When I tried to use my Gandeev (the famous bow) I was unable to lift it.

Dharmajan knew that Krishna was dead.
This simple story contains the essence of the book. We are like earthen toys.
Or like a kite, soaring higher and higher, when the wind is favouurable. In a moment, we come down like a stone !
Unable to understand this eternal truth, we go on wasting our energy in senseless quarrels.
I resigned to my fate. I closed my intellectual box and concentrated on bhakti marga.
Earlier, I had vainly tried to get some job, like that of the manager of a temple. The temple had plenty of assets, including rent of land etc. which they did not want to entrust to an audit man, who will definitely go into all the details, causing inconvenience to some of the committee members!
I even thought of becoming poojary of Ayyapa temple at Haridwar!

After we dropped mom off at work, Molly and I came home and I set her down on her back, as usual, to get her bottle ready. When I got back she’d turned over, scooted away from her play gym and was already on to play time, busily trying to get her blocks out of their dog-resistant bag.

…As I look at that, it almost looks posed. It’s not, I swear. She’s less and less satisfied with waiting for stuff to be brought to her, which is good, I think. Much rolling around was accomplished this morning.

And, since it got up to nearly 70 today, in Colorado, in November, we went to the park again. The kid likes to swing, baby.

Molly got all of her naps today in the car, whether it was dropping mom off, picking her up, running errands or hitting the park. On the plus side, she sleeps quite well in the car seat, especially in the moving truck. On the minus side, since sleeping while driving is considered poor form, dad didn’t get the rest he’s quite used to. But I suppose I can count on sleeping when she goes to college.

Out-of-town grandma and grandpa sent some papaya which arrived today; as I read, the jury seems out as to whether we can mash some up for Molly to try. We’ll see how we do as the little fellows ripen.

New BJJ Instructor, our old one had to quit due to work commitments. Our new instructor is very good

New BJJ Instructor, our old one had to quit due to work commitments. Our new instructor is very good from what I’ve seen so far.

We started off working defense against the mount. Keeping our elbows in tight to the body after first being mounted. Then transitioning to controlling the wrist and the near side shoulder, trapping the same side leg and bridge and roll. Upa in other words.

Then we worked a couple of attacks from the mount. Straightening both arms and driving the elbow out first, then dropping into americana, keeping the top elbow close to your partners ear. Drive the elbow up and the wrist back, while staying close to their body. The second attack was a collar choke, pull open the gi and get your hand deep fingers inside, then work your other hand in the other side going under your first arm. Both hands fingers inside the gi, twist your wrists and pull towards you to tighten. When applying this from the mount, shift your weight to the same side as your first hand in. This will block any reverse attempts by your partner. Feel free to use your head as a post from this position.

Next we worked on a post-Upa guard pass. After Upa the man in the guard should control their partners core, by grabbing both sides of the gi with one hand and push down, then control their waist/belt with the other. Step back with one leg opening up your hips, reach the waist/belt controlling hand through your partners crossed legs and separate them, bringing that knee up to your shoulder and reaching that hand through to control their far collar. Keep your arms tight to their body, and drive your weight forward stacking them. This will prevent them from being able to transition to a triangle. Then slowly roll your upper body so your partner’s leg slides off and you’ve passed, control their far arm and settle them down and bring your knee up to guard the danger leg. Person on the bottom should present proper hands once their guard has been passed.

Then we worked on transitioning to mount from side control. L had us use our top controlling arm to reach down and grab their belt controlling one side of your partner’s body with one hand. Guard the danger leg with your other hand and then switch your base and scoot back up into your partner’s armpit taking away all their room. Generally they’ll try to defend by crossing their knee over, just push it away from you and step over the top into mount, scoot forward into their armpits and push down on their head to take away space. Person on bottom should keep their elbows in tight and push away a bit to create space.

After that we worked all three positions, transitioning from upa where we would end up in our partner’s guard, passing that guard, into side control, then transitioning into mount where our partner would start with upa.

Good class.
