Hi Friends,

Bob and I went out to outreach, or to pass out fliers for the church, tonight. It is something we do regularly and often of course. Bob wanted to go to an area called Saphan Kwai. He was there recently and barely made a dent in the amount of people flowing through that part of town. It is an area of the city that we seriously considered to put the church in and is not far from where we are at now.

From our condo, we had to walk to the Pahon Yothin subway station, catch the underground and then switch to the sky train to get to Saphan Kwai. As we approached the entrance to the subway Bob hesitated and he said “why don’t we just outreach here?”. Actually, I was a little crabby and didn’t really care where we went, I was just kind of trudging along, but, I must confess, that I was looking around thinking “uh, ok”. It’s not exactly Grand Central Station, Pahon Yothin. It’s just a local little station that actually has 5 exits and entrances and the one we were at is not the busiest. It also connects to two malls and so people are very focused and in the mood to shop and eat. Bob kind of hesitatingly said “I think God wants us to stop here and outreach. He’s got something here”. Ooookkkkaayyy. Well, you don’t argue with God, do you?

I quickly found out, though, that is was the will of God because where I stood turned out to be a little wind tunnel for the air conditioning from the mall so I had a small pole to lean on, cool wind at my back and a steady stream of people to hand out fliers to. Soon, I was in the swing of things. “Hello! Hi! Sawatdii Kha” “Good evening sir, here you go”. Ah, maybe the glummies were leaving me. There’s no reason to be in the glummies because….oh, nevermind.

Bob ended up standing across from me so we ended up on either side of the one way into the mall from the exit and it was nice fishing. When a train pulled in, underground, there would stream up a nice group of people and just one person would have missed half. We were not there long when a small Asian lady approached Bob. People often stop and ask questions if they speak English so I was not so surprised and continued to pass out fliers. Her name is Cecil and she walked up to Bob and said “Excuse me? Can you tell me how to get to this church? We are looking for it right now”. “Yes, I can tell you because I’m the pastor” he answered and she exclaimed “You are Bob Hall??”. Ok, now it’s getting freaky.

It turns out that Cecil and her husband, Rolly, are Filipinos living in Thailand. They are Christians but unhappy with finding a church. They live right down the road from the church and pass it daily on the way to and from work. They saw our banners and were able to get some information from them but not everything since they were driving by. Cecil googled Christian Fellowship Church Thailand Bob Hall and the first site was The Door Tempe. We are so newly set up here in Thailand that there is no contact information on the website for us yet so they decided to take the time on Wednesday night to go find the church building and plan on attending Sunday night. (I think; if Cecil reads this she can correct any small facts and I’ll amend the post). Soooo, which station do they head to?? Pahon Yothin and it’s the one of a possible five that we are standing at, passing out fliers.

We ended up at Cecil’s sister’s house which is, literally, around the corner from ours and we had dinner (tocino!) and talked and talked. It just is amazing the way we met, the intentions of Rolly and Cecil for tonight, the nudging of God to stop, the fact they saw our banners….everything points to God’s hand. They are coming to church tomorrow night and we are so excited for what God is going to do in Thailand.

Bob said that when he felt like he needed to stop at PY and pass out fliers that in the back of his mind ran the advice of Pastor Aulson to be open to the nudging of the Holy Spirit.

I think, as I write this, that I am not adequately conveying the divinity that was evidenced by all involved tonight which distresses me a little so I will just trust that most of you can understand what it is like to have God open doors and God set up…divine appointments. If you don’t, I pray you will!

…but I still am. Earlier this evening I sent a reply to William Gibson (@greatdismal) about the Sony Rolly, since he had posted a link to a demo video of the Rolly. I sent him a link to a Rolly video I recorded at a Sony Style about a year ago. Told him I’d buy a Rolly if I had the spare cash. To my surprise, I saw that he retweeted the link to my video! William Gibson looked at my video (for however long) and retweeted a link to it! I really didn’t think that he would even see my tweet, so I was pretty psyched. I know it’s really silly to be proud of this, but I am. Here’s the video I linked him to: http://vimeo.com/1066182

A Few Of Our Products Are Described Below:

A Clear View Retractable Screen Door is attached to the exterior face or interior frame of a doorway. The screening material itself is attached to a roller tube that spins on a vertical axis within the assembly’s housing. The screen is also attached to a vertical pull bar that rides on a top and bottom rail and is used to stretch the screening material across the door opening. When in use, the pull bar is fixed in place by a magnet installed on the side opposite the housing. When not in use, the screen rolls into the housing, out of sight.

We offer two types of Interior Plantation Shutters: 1) Polycore is the world’s only solid synthetic shutter with internal aluminum core reinforcement. With our aluminum core technology, we are able to build a wider panel, which offers more viewing area than any of our competitors. Turn around time from final measures is only 10-14 working days. 2) Lexwood is a premium basswood shutter, built with traditional hand craftsmanship combined with the newest technology for a precision design and consistent quality control. Lexwood is available in many shades of white, stains as well as over 700 colors.

Clear View Motorized Power Screens are truly the most significant advance in screen technology in years. You can transform any oversized opening like a garage, patio, balcony, or office into a shaded, private, pest free environment; all at the touch of a button. Motorized Power Screens work great in areas where a Retractable Screen Door will not.

Exterior Shutters are for decoration only. Our exterior Shutter product line ranges from Wood, Fiberglass, Vinyl, Aluminum, as well as Composite. Once you begin to mix and match the vinyl shutter styles, sizes and colors, you will find that the design possibilities are almost endless!

Closet Doors are the perfect solution to dress up any room. If you are looking for a high end sliding closet door made of extruded aluminum, locked on the tracks and built with tempered glass; you just found it.

The list continues on with Flower Boxes, Awnings, Blinds, Shades, Interior Doors etc…please check out our website for more information in detail on each one of the products listed above. Please call us at your earliest convenience so that we can discuss all the products that we have to offer to you and your clients.
Two consisting of the Sony Rolly I bought from the Sony Building in Ginza. I had totally forgotten that Sony had made these, let alone released them for sale. I hesitated about getting one, but once the kind lady at the shop started one up and demonstrated what it could do… how could I refuse?!

The most exciting thing about it is that it can connect via bluetooth, and am able to successfully stream music from my iPhone, as well as my laptop to play through it. I guess its just a fancy set of external speakers, but there is just a certain level of geeky coolness about it. Its now the third piece of Sony Tech that I have purchased, my Sony fanboyism continues subconsciously… (unfortunately, the PS3 slim doesn’t come out until after I leave or I’d probably buy that to send home too).

Though Rolly was launched some time ago, I just got it, and I honestly can’t get my hands off it, it’s great. The story goes like this: in 2007, Sony launched a new product, Rolly, the dancing mp3; it had a pleasant design and it was available in black and white. Unfortunately, the price was about $400, way over what I could spend on an mp3.

I heard that The prices were to be cut down by Sony, but I still have no idea of how much Rolly costs. Just bellow you’ll get to see Rolly dancing on a song we all love, enjoy it:

Un articolo di Matteo Bordone – www.wired.it

Solo quando le macchine conquistano un germe di volontà diventano come i figliocci di Isaac Asimov. Qualsiasi elettrodomestico fa le cose che gli dici, e le fa come gli dici. Un robot invece è Mr Wolf: risolve problemi. E come preferisca affrontarli sono affari suoi.

In foto iRobot Roomba 580

In Foto Sony Rolly

Inutile dirti chi vince. Anche se non serve a niente.

funny guy is funny We were sitting on the sofa the other night, talking about serious stuff, i.e. fa

funny guy is funny

We were sitting on the sofa the other night, talking about serious stuff, i.e. family I think, and the following conversation took place:

MIMI Life is painful…

FUNNY GUY May I write that down?

                      *

And again, we were sitting on the sofa, embracing and almost but not entirely fully clothed.

FUNNY GUY: This would make a good screensaver.

                                *

funny guy is like most men trying to persuade a woman to go to bed with them

Funny guy has said he is “crazy about” me and that he is “besotted” (he has said that twice). He has also said that I’m “well put-together.”

That’s a new one!

                  *
love?

From date #5: Imagining a telephone conversation with one of my children, Funny Guy began, “I’m the man who’s falling in love with your mother…”

I was so surprised to hear the phrase “falling in love with” that whatever he wanted to say to my child never registered with me.

That same night, he signed an email message (written when he got home) “Love” for the first time.

*

Because of my experiences of the last couple of years with Rolly, Performer, Plan C, and T, I’m being extremely cautious about everything. Funny Guy understands that I am, and he understands why. He has said that each of us has already made him/herself vulnerable to the other one. He has also said that he is “willing to go to extreme lengths to make you comfortable and happy.”

           *
funny guy’s friends & family

He talks about them a lot. And he talks about me to them. One of them called the other day just after he arrived chez moi, as we were standing in the kitchen kissing.

“What am I doing? I was kissing Mimi when you called.”

              *
As he was leaving to come over here, his daughter called. The following conversation took place:

DAUGHTER Hi Dad, how are you?

FUNNY GUY I’m just going out the door right now.

DAUGHTER Where are you going?

FUNNY GUY I’m meeting someone.

DAUGHTER You have a date??

FUNNY GUY It’s more than a date.

DAUGHTER Oh Dad!

             *

the sartorial man

I spoke too soon when I said, in a previous post, that Funny Guy’s clothes were “dreadful.” He has been getting new ones — at the thriftshop. I complimented him on his outfit Saturday night (better to say good stuff about the good clothes than bad stuff about the bad clothes [as Funny Guy might say, "May I write that down?"]), a nice rich medium blue long-sleeved buttoned shirt and tannish pants with a very soft texture (he invited me to feel the fabric….). He said that he had been indecisive for a long time about what to wear, putting things on, inspecting himself in the mirror, and then changing to something else.

The funny thing is, I had been in the identical state of sartorial indecision, and probably at the same time he was.

Last night, Sunday, he wore a black shirt and white pants. I liked the color combo, though the shirt was hanging loose outside the pants, and of course that didn’t look too wonderful. But he was evidently pleased with the black shirt (another treasure from the thrift shop), so I was too.

our dates

For a few of our six dates, Funny Guy has come over to my apartment for dinner (his apartment has some issues at the moment). He brings his dinner with him, and I have mine ready (Stoneyfield plain non-fat yogurt with sugar and raspberries), and we eat together.

               *
Funny Guy says he always feels “calm” around me.

I find that amazing: no one else has ever, ever said that to me. I’ve never been considered “calm”; lively, yes; and excited, jumpy, and even anxious (who, me??). But never “calm.”

Gosh, what’s gotten into me?

Must be something I ate.

              *

the balance sheet

ON THE MINUS SIDE
Funny Guy has no money. He has described hmself as living in ‘genteel poverty.’ He lives in a ‘modest’ neighborhood and shares his extremely low rent with a male roommate.

Funny Guy has no job. He would like to be employed. Professionally, he has had a habit of speaking truth to power, and we know where that leads…

Funny Guy has long had trouble being happy, at least for an extended period of time.

ON THE PLUS SIDE
Funny Guy is attuned to me emotionally. Even before we met — in fact the morning of the day we met — he sent me an email that absolutely hit the spot, said exactly what (on that particular day) I badly needed to hear. And (with some knowledge of me) he did the same thing two days later, in a different way, but also attuned.

Funny Guy is hilarious, definitely one of the two funniest men I’ve ever dated. Rolly was also very funny, but not as much, and there was often a bitter edge to Rolly’s humor.

Funny Guy is ‘good,’ as we used to say; extremely good. I mean, ‘good’ at ?!@#$?%@^!! — not that we’ve been to bed together yet, but hey, I can tell. No doubt on this point.

Funny Guy is very smart; he speaks my language. He is an intellectual equal.

Funny Guy has sought to comprehand his failed relationships. He is open to and eager for (the German word sounds better here) Selbst-Verständnis. Unlike Plan C (and T), he has a subtle vocabulary of relationships. He initiates conversations about ‘us,’ and wants us to understand, together, where we are and (as that quotation from Lincoln now up on the subways says) ‘whither we are tending.’ — This all sounds awfully serious, but Funny Guy is never serious for very long, thank god.

Funny Guy appears to have understood, immediately and intuitively, what I’ve been through over the past almost-three years of dating, and, in fact, over the past 62 years.

And oh yes, he lives only about 25 minutes from me by subway.

*

on the informational side

Although not in any precisely calculated way, Funny Guy and I have more-or-less split the expenses of our six dates so far, and no doubt will continue to do so in the future. But we don’t run up many expenses: the groceries we buy and the restaurants where we eat are pretty cheap (and I am making dinner tomorrow out of leftovers from one of them). And there’s plenty to do in NYC that is free or inexpensive.

He has met two of my friends, because they were visiting in NYC on the days of our dates. The first definitely liked him; and the second said to me over the phone, ‘I have a good feeling about him.’

He has great hair, a kind of thick, straight, silvery-white hair. Not bad for age 65.

He grew up in a working-class family in an ethnic ghetto and went to college on an academic and athletic scholarship.

*

and??

We have learned a lot about one another’s childhood traumas and family life. Lots of misery all round. But we amuse one another a lot.

I am taking a long time to give myself over to him (trying to avoid the word “commit,” which I’m so tired of), emotionally I mean as well as other ways, though as you must have noticed in the previous post, I’ve burnt my bridges and stopped dating other people. I want to see if things will work…..but I’m asking him lots of questions about himself and I’m being careful what I say.

But as Funny Guy said to me over the phone yesterday, it’s a leap of faith. I need to remember that being cautious and careful and stuff before I decide to give this a try does not guarantee that it will work. But it doesn’t mean it won’t. Yes, my eyes will be wide open, but that only means that I don’t have illusions: what I will have is hope.

            *

Of course, I’ve already written all those ‘Dear John’ letters, so I’ve begun the leap; I’ve cleared the way for it (and I’ve mixed a few metaphors).

             *

Is it possible to make a zillionth mistake, to fail to be wise, to fuck up yet another time?

                *

Of course it is!

                  *

I guess we’ll see, won’t we?

                 *
