Anastasia était la quatrième fille de Nicolas II, le dernier tsar de Russie, qui a régné jusqu’en 1917. Celui-ci était marié à l’impératrice Alexandra, de laquelle il eut quatre filles entre 1895 et 1901, puis finalement, e 1904, l’héritier tant attendu, le tasrévitch Alexis. En 1917, suite à la révolution bolchevique, le tsar abdique, et lui et sa famille sont alors retenus prisonniers durant cinq mois. Dans la nuit du 16 au 17 juillet 1918, Lénine et une partie du Bureau Politique ordonnent l’exécution de la totalité de la famille impériale et de leurs serviteurs.

Cependant, en 1920, une certaine Anna Andreson, en Allemagne, prétend être Anastasia : elle dira avoir été sauvée par un des membres du peloton d’exécution, qui l’a par la suite épousée. Les membres de la famille impériale refusent de la reconnaître. Elle se met alors à livrer des détails que seule la fille de Nicolas II aurait pu connaître, sur la vie à la Cour de Russie, sa famille, les conditions de détention, mais aussi et surtout elle révèle les négociations d’accords secrets en 1916 entre Nicolas II et un envoyé de Guillaume II dont elle prétend avoir été témoin. La famille impériale refusera toujours de voir en elle Anastasia, d’autant qu’Anna Andreson, malgré les détails qu’elle livre, ne ressemble pas physiquement à Anastasia, et surtout ne parle pas russe !

En 1990, les corps de la famille sont retrouvés et exhumés, et on procède alors à une analyse ADN. Le corps d’Anastasia est retrouvé avec ceux de sa famille, et sa mort est clairement datée de 1918. Le mystère est donc résolu : Anastasia n’a pas survécu. Il n’existe à ce jour pas d’explication pour justifier la connaissance approfondie qu’Anna Andreson avait de la famille impériale et de la vie à la Cour.

Anna Anderson was one of a number of women claiming to be the youngest daughter of the last Czar Nicholas II, Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicolaevna. The Russian Revolution of 1917 saw the Czar removed from power and, ultimately, killed along with his wife, children and some servants. She was one of at least 10 claiming to be the Grand Duchess but, along with fellow claimant Eugenia Smith, she was certainly the best known. She was pulled from a canal in Berlin in 1929, and was at first called Fraulein Unbekannt (Miss Unknown) as she refused to say whom she was. She was admitted to a mental hospital in, then, Zwittau and questioned repeatedly. She at last revealed her identity to be that of the Grand Duchess. So began five decades of speculation as to her identity, divided between those who believed she was and those who believed she wasn’t. Among those who believed she was Anastasia were, Gleb Botkin (Son of the Czar’s doctor and childhood playmate of the Grand Duchess), along with various Russian émigrés. Against her claim was Grand Duke Ernst Louis of Hesse (The Empress Alexandra’s brother and uncle to Anastasia), Pierre Gilliard (The Grand Duchesses personal tutor) and also the Czar’s sister, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna. Alexandrovna had actually visited Anderson in the hospital and kept a brief correspondence with her before declaring that the young woman was not her niece. Anderson’s claim was also not believed by other Romanov family members. Anderson launched several attempts in court to establish her identity. When the final case concluded, in 1970, it was decided that neither side had conclusively proven who she was. Her believers supported her for many years and she immigrated to the United States in 1968. She married supporter Jack Manahan in December 1968 and they remained married until her death, of pneumonia, on 12 February 1984. The recent (2007) discovery of the remains of Anastasia in the Koptyaki Forest in Siberia, for me, raises more questions. If Anderson was not Anastasia, who was she? This question already seems to have been answered as she was identified as Polish factory worker Franziska Schanzkowska, both by Schanzkowska’s family and relatives of the Romanovs. However, if this is who she was how did she come to know so much about the Russian Imperial Court? Where did she learn to speak three languages? Although personally I do not believe that Anderson was Anastasia I still find the subject very interesting. Thanks for reading.

Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Mohammad Khazaee, sent a letter of protest to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moonin which he wrote that “there is no explanation for Israel’s continuing threats against Tehran”.

He was referring to an interview given by former Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh to the Sunday Times in which he said that if Iran were not further sanctioned by this Christmas Israel would attack the country.

Sneh told the paper that if Israel were forced to attack the Islamic Republic on its own it would do so, remarks the Iranian ambassador deemed “irresponsible”.

He said he hoped the UN would take steps against such comments. “Remarks such as these, stated once in a while by Israeli leaders, are no more than sorry excuses aimed at avoiding supplying answers regarding Israel’s nuclear arsenal and deflecting public awareness from the crimes and terror Israel commits in the region,” he said.

Khazaee once again stressed that his country’s nuclear program was intended for peaceful purposes and said that “the only threat in the region is Israel’s nuclear arsenal, which remains unsupervised to this day”.

Seit ich 1914 als Freiwilliger meine bescheidene Kraft im ersten, dem Reich aufgezwungenen Weltkrieg einsetzte, sind nunmehr über dreissig Jahre vergangen.

In diesen drei Jahrzehnten haben mich bei all meinem Denken, Handeln und Leben nur die Liebe und Treue zu meinem Volk bewegt. Sie gaben mir die Kraft, schwerste Entschlüsse zu fassen, wie sie bisher noch keinem Sterblichen gestellt worden sind. Ich habe meine Zeit, meine Arbeitskraft und meine Gesundheit in diesen drei Jahrzehnten verbraucht.

Es ist unwahr, dass ich oder irgendjemand anderer in Deutschland den Krieg im Jahre 1939 gewollt haben. Er wurde gewollt und angestiftet ausschliesslich von jenen internationalen Staatsmännern, die entweder jüdischer Herkunft waren oder für jüdische Interessen arbeiteten.

Ich habe zuviele Angebote zur Rüstungsbeschränkung und Rüstungsbegrenzung gemacht, die die Nachwelt nicht auf alle Ewigkeiten wegzuleugnen vermag, als dass die Verantwortung für den Ausbruch dieses Krieges auf mir lasten könnte. Ich habe weiter nie gewollt, dass nach dem ersten unseligen Weltkrieg ein zweiter gegen England oder gar gegen Amerika entsteht. Es werden Jahrhunderte vergehen, aber aus den Ruinen unserer Städte und Kunstdenkmäler wird sich der Hass gegen das letzten Endes verantwortliche Volk immer wieder erneuern, dem wir das alles zu verdanken haben: dem internationalen Judentum und seinen Helfern.

Ich habe noch drei Tage vor Ausbruch des deutsch-polnischen Krieges dem britischen Botschafter in Berlin eine Lösung der deutsch-polnischen Probleme vorgeschlagen – ähnlich der im Falle des Saargebietes unter internationaler Kontrolle. Auch dieses Angebot kann nicht weggeleugnet werden. Es wurde nur verworfen, weil die massgebenden Kreise der englischen Politik den Krieg wünschten, teils der erhofften Geschäfte wegen, teils getrieben durch eine, vom internationalen Judentum veranstaltete Propaganda.

Ich habe aber auch keinen Zweifel darüber gelassen, dass, wenn die Völker Europas wieder nur als Aktienpakete dieser internationalen Geldund Finanzverschwörer angesehen werden, dann auch jenes Volk mit zur Verantwortung gezogen werden wird, das der eigentlich Schuldige an diesem mörderischen Ringen ist: Das Judentum! Ich habe weiter keinen darüber im Unklaren gelassen, dass dieses Mal nicht nur Millionen Kinder von Europäern der arischen Völker verhungern werden, nicht nur Millionen erwachsener Männer den Tod erleiden und nicht nur Hunderttausende an Frauen und Kindern in den Städten verbrannt und zu Tode bombardiert werden dürften, ohne dass der eigentlich Schuldige, wenn auch durch humanere Mittel, seine Schuld zu büssen hat.

Nach einem sechsjährigen Kampf, der einst in die Geschichte trotz aller Rückschläge als ruhmvollste und tapferste Bekundung des Lebenswillens eines Volkes eingehen wird, kann ich mich nicht von der Stadt trennen, die die Hauptstadt dieses Reiches ist. Da die Kräfte zu gering sind, um dem feindlichen Ansturm gerade an dieser Stelle noch länger standzuhalten, der eigene Widerstand aber durch ebenso verblendete wie charakterlose Subjekte allmählich entwertet wird, möchte ich mein Schicksal mit jenem teilen, das Millionen anderer auch auf sich genommen haben, indem ich in dieser Stadt bleibe. Außerdem will ich nicht Feinden in die Hände fallen, die zur Erlustigung ihrer verhetzten Massen ein neues, von Juden arrangiertes Schauspiel benötigen.

More than thirty years have now passed since I in 1914 made my modest contribution as a volunteer in the first world war that was forced upon the Reich.

In these three decades I have been actuated solely by love and loyalty to my people in all my thoughts, acts, and life. Three days before the outbreak of the German-Polish war I again proposed to the British ambassador in Berlin a solution to the German-Polish problem—similar to that in the case of the Saar district, under international control. Moreover I do not wish to fall into the hands of an enemy who requires a new spectacle organized by the Jews for the amusement of their hysterical masses.

I have decided therefore to remain in Berlin and there of my own free will to choose death at the moment when I believe the position of the Fuehrer and Chancellor itself can no longer be held.

Germany has lost its war. She sues for peace. The imperative demands of the victor people that Germany must perish forever makes it obligatory for the leaders to select mass sterilization of the Germans as the best means of wiping them out permanently.

• Immediately and completely disarm the German army and have all armaments removed from German territory.
• Place all German utility and heavy industrial plants under heavy guard, and replace German workers by those of Allied nationality.

Met Vladimir Poetin lijkt Rusland over een nieuwe tsaar te beschikken. Minder dan tien jaar na de val van het voormalige Sovjet-rijk, keerde een Russische regeringsleider het Westen opnieuw de rug toe. Net zoals Nicolaas I een einde had gesteld aan het pro-westers beleid van zijn voorgangster Catharina de Grote, verkoos Poetin een volledig verschillend beleid waarbij hij inspeelde  op de frustraties van het volk.  Zo behaalde de ex-KGB-agent de ene verkiezingsoverwinning na de andere.

De Russische beer staat weer op

Tot groot plezier van de Russische bevolking, stelde Poetin paal en perk aan internationale vernederingen en politieke chaos. Baanbrekende economische hervormingen maakten het land tot een waar Wirtschaftswunder. Rusland dankt echter veel aan haar rijkdom aan olie en grondstoffen, waarmee het ook het energiedorstige China, dé supermacht van de 21^ste eeuw, onder druk kan zetten.

Ook op vlak van buitenlands beleid brult de Russische beer luider dan ooit tevoren. Het omsingelingscomplex dat na de val van de Berlijnse Muur waarheid leek te worden, bracht Poetin ertoe de touwtjes opnieuw strak in handen te nemen. De oorlog in Georgië moest Amerika duidelijk maken dat aan de Russische invloedssfeer niet getornd wordt. De “Clash of Civilisations” die aan het eind van de 20^ste eeuw afgekoeld was, barstte weer in alle hevigheid los.

Kan de Russische Beer nog klauwen?

Tekenend voor deze koersverandering in internationale betrekkingen, is de teruggekeerde machteloosheid van de VN. Waar de slagkracht van het samenwerkingsorgaan in de loop van de jaren ’90 enigzins verbeterd was, dankzij het wegvallen van de polariteit tussen Rusland en de VS, betekende het aantreden van Poetin als president het einde van deze periode van dooi. Door het arrogante gedrag van het Westen dat in internationale conflicten vaak met twee maten en twee gewichten werkt, keert de Russische eerste minister zich af van de internationale politiek en diplomatiek overleg. Met de oliekraan in handen, beschikt Rusland bovendien over een sterke troef waarmee het een belangrijke vinger in de pap van de Europese politiek kan houden.

Ondanks het feit dat hij op het internationaal toneel graag de spierballen laat rollen, lijkt dit gedrag voor Poetin steeds meer een uitweg uit het sociaal onrustige binnenland, waar Ivan met de pet lijdt onder de sociale repressie van zijn autoritair beleid.

Dit beleid stoelt echter op twee wegzakkende funderingen: een weinig gemotiveerd en verouderd leger naast een verpauperd volk dat niet mee kan genieten van de vergaarde economische rijkdommen en steeds meer persoonlijke vrijheden dient op te geven.Op die manier vertoont Rusland twee gezichten. Ondanks Poetins verkiezingsbeloftes, neemt de corruptie namelijk opnieuw een hoge vlucht. Een kleine groep oligarchen profiteert van Ruslands olierijkdommen en economische groei, terwijl de levensomstandigheden van de modale Rus zienderogen achteruitgaan. Terwijl de hoge heren uit Moskou aan culturele invloed probeert te winnen in Trans-Kaukasië en Centraal-Azië, vreten een dalende levensverwachting, een hoog sterftecijfer en beperkte vrijheden aan het moreel van het Russische volk.

Hoewel Poetin culturele autonomie schenkt aan de verschillende etnische groepen, worden westerse waarden als persvrijheid en vrijheid van meningsuiting ernstig met de voeten getreden. Net zoals Venezuela, dat bij het aantreden van de populaire president Chávez plots door een golf van positivisme werd overspoeld, lijkt Rusland zo moeilijk met binnenlandse spanningen om te kunnen gaan nu zwaar bevochten vrijheden afgenomen worden.

De geschiedenis herhaalt zich?

Poetin dient er hier op gewezen te worden dat wanneer niet alleen over het binnenlands beleid, maar ook over de internationale prestaties van de Russische regering vraagtekens rijzen, zijn autoritaire positie mogelijk in gevaar komt. Toen tsaar Nicolaas I een onder de sociale spanningen verdrinkend Rusland verliet om aan het front van de eerste wereldoorlog het moreel van zijn troepen hoog te houden, vormde het militair falen van zijn verzwakte leger de genadeslag voor zijn politieke macht. Hoewel internationale praal binnenlandse spanningen de kop in kan slaan, stelde de tegenovergestelde evolutie in 1917 een einde aan circa 300 jaar Romanov-dynastie. De toekomst zal uitwijzen of de geschiedenis zich opnieuw zal herhalen.

Aquellos que ya hayan leído un poco de mi en “acerca de los autores” entenderán por qué, en especial, es de este libro la primera reseña que ofrezco.

Aunque las categorías oficiales en las que dicho texto se inscribe son ensayo y biografía, la verdad es que la manera amena y ligera en la que el autor va presentando la bien documentada información –basada en diarios, cartas y otros documentos de la época- convierten esta obra biográfica en una novela histórica basada en datos reales, sin  fantasías del autor –como pasa en otras novelas históricas- pero en un relato envolvente en el que se va entretejiendo la vida y obra de Sofía Augusta Federica De Anhalt-Zerbst y Holstein-Gottorp (mejor conocida como Catalina II de Rusia, “la Grande”)  desde su nacimiento en 1729, hasta su muerte en 1796, a la vez que describe le contexto histórico, político, social y cultural de la época en Rusia y gran parte de Europa.

Un libro lleno de datos, fechas, nombres… Pero también emoción, intriga, misterio, drama, romance… En donde la protagonista es una mujer alemana quien rompe con muchos de los cánones de la época, de los estigmas y tabúes que limitaban a la mujer, y se erige como emperatriz de Rusia, convirtiéndose en una de las figuras más poderosas de Europa y el mundo en  la época de la Ilustración. Una mujer valiente Siendo amiga de Voltaire y Diderot, fomentando el arte y el desarrollo socio-político-cultural de Rusia, pero gobernando de forma autocrática -como parte del llamado despotismo ilustrado-, representando todo el poder y plasmando así una de las tantas contradicciones en la personalidad de esta mujer, figura pública e histórica por demás interesante, admirable y controvertida.

Es un libro que puede ser leído desde la adolescencia.

They were found while storage items were being moved, the report said. The collection includes around 60 gold and silver cigarette cases and cuff links, and jewels made by Faberge and the Bolin family, who were court jewelers to five Russian tsars and three Swedish kings, Ekot said. “We have discovered a large quantity of jewels which were brought to what was known as the Swedish mission in Petrograd in November 1918 by a confidant of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna,” said professor Krister Valbek. The Grand Duchess died in France without telling her family about the jewelry taken to Sweden. The jewels were kept in Sweden for about 91 years. Swedish authorities had made no mention of them earlier for security reasons, and wary over harming relations with the Soviet Union. The jewels have been handed over to members of the Romanov family. Some of them will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s London in November.

The objects, which include 100 cigarette boxes, are expected to fetch about 1 million pounds ($1.6 million), said Sofia Stroem, a spokeswoman for Sotheby’s in Stockholm. “Unknown for generations until their recent rediscovery, the objects, some of which still contain evidence of use by the Romanovs — remnants of tobacco and period Bogdanov cigarettes — truly evoke the grandeur and sublime taste of their original owners,” Marcus Linell of Sotheby’s said in a statement. Since the 1920s and 30s, the New York Public Library has quietly harbored a collection of unusually brilliant provenance: over 3,000 volumes from the residences of the Russian Imperial family. In 1997, some 124 of these went on display in an ambitious exhibition entitled The Romanovs: Their Empire, Their Books.

A catalogue to the exhibition was made available in the Fall issue of Biblion along with reproductions of some the objects on display. These are preceded by an essay by one of the exhibitions curators, Marc Raeff. This catalogue offers a rare look into a little known part of Romanov history.

In 1974 I must should receive the inheritance but has not received till now. While she’s struggling to break free from the clasp of the boy, she’s shouting through her tears :

What’s happening? Why must I go? No…I don’t want too… Mama, papa, let me go!

But it’s all in vain, and the boy is dragging her further away. Just then, a loud noise startles her and she sees red flames embracing a white shell and a thick black smoke rising up from it, obstructing the sun, making it seem like the middle of the night.

She abruptly rose from her bed and with tears still in her eyes she looked around frightened, trying to figure out where she was. After a minute or so, she calmed down a little, got out of bed, and walked to the kitchen to get herself a cup of water. After she poured herself some water she heard branches snapping outside so she turned off the light and looked out the living room window. There was a shadow lurking in the dark, turning in circles around the house. She woke up completely, took a knife from the kitchen cupboard and she went out the back door, slowly, making her way to the shadow.

But as she approached it, she realized it was the mysterious man, so she left the knife fall down and ran to him, hugging him from behind. He jumped in surprise and violently shook her off, and she fell on her bottom, letting out a small cry. After he realized it was her he quickly helped her up, by taking her by the waist and pulling her up, and draw her to his chest for a few seconds before letting her go.

She looked at him pouting and said: “What manners, you should know better than to treat a lady like this!” He started laughing.

“What lady? You were the one that almost pushed me down from behind” She smiled.“Well, I missed you a little.”

“Well, I’m flattered… and a little glad.” He replied. They both started laughing.

“So what are you doing here at night?” She asked looking curiously at him.

“Oh, I was just in the neighborhood, and decided to see if anyone was still awake, and then I heard some noise from the garden and was checking it out.” He said, while avoiding to look at her.

“But what are you doing at this hour of the night still awake?”

“Oh, I had a terrifying nightmare, and came down to get a glass of water, when I saw you in the garden.”

“What was the dream about?” he asked jokingly? “A dream where you couldn’t eat your dessert?”

“No! If you really want to know it was a really scary dream. I was crying when a boy was pulling me away from a sea of fire and smoke, and I think my parents were in there…”, she said, and the some tears fell involuntary from her eyes.

The man froze for a second, then seeing her cry, he took her in his arms, and patted her head gently, while hiding his face in her disheveled hair.

“It’s ok, everything is alright, I’m here” he said gently. Cry all you want…” And for a few minutes they didn’t say anything anymore. After she calmed down she asked:

“Why?”

“Why what?” he replied

“Why are you so kind to me? Why did you send me searching for the Lytton family? What connection do they have to my family?”

He didn’t say anything for a few seconds, wondering how to answer her questions and weather she was really ready to know the truth? While hesitating, she looked at him trying to read his expressions, and then she suddenly asked:

“Is your name still unimportant? Cause I want to know what you are called.”

“Well, it really isn’t important to know my name but if you ask me to introduce myself, I can’t say no to such a cute young lady as yourself.” Then he smiled.

“You can call me Keith.”

“Keith, nice name, and I don’t know why, but it fells familiar.”

“Yes, well it should, you used to always call for me”.

“I did? When?” she asked.

“A long time ago, long before you even knew me…” And then he didn’t say anything else. She just sat there and thought of the words he had said, and what they could mean.

Was it possible she had known him before she was 10? If so, why couldn’t she remember?

“Can I ask you something now?” he asked.

“Sure!” she said being only half attentive to what he was saying.

“Six years ago, why were you out on the street? Who were you searching for?”

She then turned to him surprised and said: “Well I saw something moving in the garden, and I thought it was Joe, the driver, and I followed him with the intention to scare him, but then he just disappeared, and I got a little lost” and she smiled at the memory.

He started laughing. “Ah, yes, Joe, same stature.” She looked confused at this answer, but then suddenly she realized, Keith had the same height and build as Joe, so it was very possible she confused them, and she was really following Keith.

“So…it was you that night? The one that I followed?”

“Well yes…” and he kept smiling. She blushed slightly, then continued:

“But then what were you doing at my house?”

“Oh I just had a little conversation with your father. And I was on my way back to my house.”

“I didn’t know you knew my parents…” she said

“Yes, well, you didn’t see me coming to your house, so of course you didn’t know about me.”

Elisa wanted to say something but before she could do it, they heard noises coming from the house.

“I think it’s time I left, looks like your aunt is up.” As he said that, he slightly bent forward and kissed her forehead. “Next time we meet I might bring you suffering, so I’ll say I’m sorry now.” And he left. She remained there, with a blank stare, until her aunt saw her and came screaming at her.

“What do you think you are doing little miss? Have you gone mad? It’s not ladylike to go outside the house dressed like this, and not healthy either. What if someone saw you or you caught another cold? Go back to your bed right now!”

She looked at her aunt and nodded, then she went upstairs and got into bed, but she didn’t sleep, just stood there with her eyes open, thinking of what Keith had said.

“Why suffer? Did something bad happen? He’s still a mysterious man for me, just when I feel like I’m beginning to understand him, he says something which confuses me even more.”

And while thinking, she finally fell in a heavy sleep, to recover the sleep lost thru the night.

A few weeks passed with nothing unusual happening, and the mysterious man was nowhere in sight. On day Elisa received by mail a box wrapped in colorful paper and a green ribbon on top, addressed to her but with no sender’s address. Luckily for her, there was no one at home when the package arrived so she could move the box to her room unnoticed. She hurriedly opened the box and inside she found a white teddy bear dressed with a checkered green and red vest and pants, and an envelope. She opened the envelope and found inside a black and white picture of a couple with two kids; one was a baby in the arms of the lady and the other was a boy around 10 years old smiling happily while looking at the camera, standing in front of them; and a man standing beside the woman had his left hand on the boys shoulder and was smiling happily.

This box brought with it a new series of question: Who was the couple in the picture? Did they have any connection to her? And what was it that the mysterious man wanted to tell her?

After thinking throughout the night and meditating on her next step, by morning she had decided, so she went to her old house, and climbing the staircase, she entered the attic. There were lot of old objects, and cases, and after inspecting a little the content of the attic and the order of it she started looking for old picture albums and letters.

After 4 hours of searching through the dust, rags and a couple of falling boxes, she finally found, in a small casket, a picture of the couple, together with her parents, when they were younger. This was the connection she had searched for, the relation between the two couples and naturally, between her and that couple. She turned the picture, and on the back there was a date, 8 July 1985, and four initials: H&J and T&S.

She knew immediately that H&J were the initials of her parents, and T&S were the persons to whom the necklace belonged, namely Thomas and Stephanie. So now she needed to find out more about the T&S couple.

Said and done, the next day she went to the library and searched through the newspaper archives for the names, where she found several stories but only one attracted her interest. It was about an airplane crash, and several deaths which included Sir Thomas L and Madame Stephanie L as well as their girl. Miss Caroline L age 5. The article was the following:

“Yesterday, at 11 o’clock in the morning, a terrible accident ended the lives of several people including the distinguished Sir Thomas and Madame Stephanie L, along with their little girl Miss Caroline L, of only 5, as well as the copilot, Mr. Seth M. and a pregnant lady called Catherine S., coming from Italy. The plane started experiencing problems as it was approaching the landing site, when the turbine suddenly exploded sending the plane in free fall, towards the lake near the airport. Authorities are still investigating the causes of the technical problems experienced, and might be suspecting foul play.”

This was probably the Lytton family she had heard her aunt and uncle talk about. But the newspaper clearly stated that the girl, Caroline, had died along with her parents, so why was the mysterious man looking for her? Or was it just a rumor that he was searching for her? Regardless, she found it most likely that these were he people she had seen in that picture with their children. And if the girl was the only one who had died, that meant that the boy was still alive. But could she be certain that the boy in the picture was really the son of the Lytton family? There was no mentioning of the Lytton’s having a son.

More days pasted as she was turning in her head all that she had found out, and everything was leading to the Lytton family and the boy in the picture remained a mystery. She decided to conduct some investigations on the mansion of the Lytton family, so one afternoon, after asking people were the Lytton’s used to live, she noted the address and didn’t wait long to go there.

It was a mighty mansion, seated in the middle of a vast yard, which was framed by an imposing, black wrought iron fence, with flowers sculpted on it; on equal bases there were pointed spikes meant to discourage trespassing, and these were covered by vines usually called traveler’s joy, while the little white flowers blocked half the view of the garden. The mansion’s grandness was emphasized by its simplicity, illustrating neo-Georgian architecture, it was a structure at which people turned their heads, admiring its beautiful and imposing build. The garden was clean, with beds of dark-red roses, surrounded by trimmed hedges, which formed a circle, and in its center there was an old cast marble fountain with sparkling water gushing from the center of it, forming a beautiful view. Next to them, there was a road especially made for vehicles , and further away there were two marble bird baths.

Elisa approached the fence and while looking through the vines she saw the main door open and a man came out, in an expensive suit, got inside a car, and left the house through the giant cast iron gate that closed heavily after them. When the car passed Elisa, she could distinguish through the window in the back seat a raven-black head bowed over a newspaper. She knew who that was, and she realized what that meant: him, the mystery man, was the son of the Lytton. But why did he guide her through all this information? Something wasn’t clicking together. What was she missing, what was the piece of vital information that she lacked?

She then approached the iron gate and tried to open it, but it was tightly shut. Out of nowhere, an old man, wearing a black tailcoat, enquired on the purpose of her presence there.

“I am looking for the young master of this house” replied Elisa.

“Young master?” the man said surprised, “Unfortunately the young master died a long time ago along with his family. There is only Sir Earl now.”

“Ah I see, but then who was the man in the car?” she inquired.

“I’m sorry I can’t tell you that, and it’s better if you don’t ask so many questions little miss, or people may think you’re up to no good”, the man said. “Well have a safe trip home, goodbye!” and he turned and left, entering the house.

“Hmm, are they just hiding things or is my suspicion wrong? It seems that, after all, the only way for me to get the answer is to talk to the mysterious man and ask him.” She turned on her heels and walked back home, determined to give it more thought the following day. .
