Today we are visiting a local school that our contact teaches at.

One of the pupils, José wanted to arm wrestle with me.

I tried, but he won – barely!

In the p.m. we had a home group bible study. I sang a song in Spanish – Mi Universo by Jesús Adrían Romero (look it up if you would like and watch the music video. It’s beautiful!)

This Week’s Material

A 2 minute clip of Steven Scholzman discussing zombie culture

CBC interview called “Zombie Culture”

History Channel Documentary – The Truth About Zombies

Michael Jackson’s Thriller

Zombies in Society

The zombie means a lot to our society and our culture. In this final post, I hope to figure out just what it means. Unfortunately, this may all seem very obvious, since a lot of these things were already touched upon, and as this course comes to a close it seems as if everything has been leading to this very moment. It is time for the final definition of zombies in society. Here we go!

The zombie is one of those creatures that manifest itself as two-pronged. One side of the zombie shows a reflection of society. On the other hand, society is influenced by the zombie. The zombie has tested and pushed our culture in some organic ways. We see our society mirrored back to us in the films and media. We are part of a spreading culture created by the cult-following of zombies. as an example of society reflecting the zombie. We can see the total permeation of the zombie becoming a novelty of our culture. Finally, we are witnessing the zombies demise from our culture because there is simply too much. It is these above points that can help us describe the zombie culture, zombies and society, and what it really means to us.

The zombie has always spoken about our culture, playing its malleability on our fears. It can so easily mean so many things, because it is impersonal and trait-less. You can stick any fear on it, and it will not be hokey or campy. The zombie is perfect for reaching in to what we truly find is scary (undead corpses eating our flesh) to what we think is scary at the time. We have seen this throughout the films and media of this course.

Undead Reflection

The undead has classically been used to reflect the fears of its society.

In White Zombie, we saw a time period reflected that feared miscegenation, the increasingly naïve and sexually liberated breed of young people and the dangers they faced. A little further down the line, Romero displayed our fear of nuclear war and invasion, as well as problems with our society like consumerism (using the consuming zombie in a mall as a direct metaphor). His films used concepts such as abuse of power, consciousness, self, identity, wealth, and what a society could potentially be like in this type of disaster. The zombie, again, spoke to a social context – these are things that average westerners wished for and worried over.

“- The Haitian zombie- a symbol of the bokor or masters appetite, for wealth, sugar, white women…” (Moremon and Rushton 7)

Next came 28 days later, which revamped the script into a fast-moving disease and zombie that reflected our fears of biological warfare and epidemic. World War Z, the book, deals with the fear that globalization will be our demise. Shaun of the Dead laughed at zombie films, but also reflected strength in family and fear of death, both socially (becoming a dead beat) and literally.

If we look deeper, we can see other ways the zombie reflects our sexuality. I have seen the initial outbreak as a metaphor for the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a revolution of the other rising up, a display of the oppressiveness of society. These reflect more underlying fears – fear of change, fear of disease, fear of oppression and becoming un-human in someone’s eyes.

Through these medias, we see that the zombie does imitate society in the most extreme ways. The zombie is consistently put up against our most primal fears. It shows us our most extreme emotion, extreme situations, and an extreme society. It keeps us watching in a way we can oddly relate to. This is why the zombie culture is so popular – with the use of our fears, and our society, it keeps us holding on. Not only because the story is so interesting, but also because we want to know what happens to ourselves. What happens to this society? Will this happen to us? If these are our fears, if this story is really ours, than what will happen to us? As society held on, the grip and growth of the zombie culture became something that may be scarier than the zombie.

The Cult of The Undead, and Everyone Else

As zombies grew in popularity the fan system spawned and grew into a horde. To put this in perspective; when the zombie walk in Toronto began, there were six zombies. Six years later, there was more than a thousand in attendance. Shocking. The horde grew. These are zombies in the literal sense, and this shows that our society influences the motives of the zombie, but the zombie has influenced our culture.

Let’s look at culture in general. Culture is a horde. If you belong to a certain culture, you belong to the group. You are included. You are part of the horde connected by a common interest, like flesh and blood for a zombie. If you don’t like the Walking Dead, let’s say, maybe you started watching it because you felt left out of the conversation and wanted to be involved. In the beginning of the zombie craze, people who didn’t necessarily belong to any group, ‘outsiders’, latched on to the zombie mania like they latch on to things like twilight and hunger games.

The zombie culture then spread, and it fluctuates with the time. As it grew more popular, it began to spread into different avenues and hit the mainstream. For example, look at Michael Jackson’s Thriller. He jumped on to the zombie bandwagon and perhaps made it even more into popular culture. His video was an international hit. There was, and still is a sense of community with the zombie that seems to have an interesting effect. It is like you are in on a global inside joke. It created both a place for people who maybe did not belong as well as those who did. Today, the zombie culture has progressed in such a way that everyone knows the joke, but isn’t tired of it.

What is this type of joke and hold on the zombie? Obsession, if that is the proper word. It boils down to a group mentality and a strive to fit in and belong. Perhaps it was first a connection between the common fears the zombie represented, and into the fact that a lot of people thought they were cool. With time, a culture that feared a horde became one. No person or thing is excluded; Academics, movies, tv, online forums, porn, store products, jello molds, etc. There are zombie squads across the country, zombie survival kits sold all over the world. Even my stepbrother has a zombie survival plan. The ideas are endless, the products are endless, and the fact that there is even a market for zombie items and zombie groups give an incredible testament to how important the zombie is to our culture. However, when will it be too much? Will the zombie fad/e away like bell bottom jeans or pogs, or does it mean something more to our culture. Will we hold on to it like we do The Beatles or Michael Jackson’s Thriller by means of long-lasting effect? The zombie is becoming so ingrained in our culture, that is it becoming desensitized to the point of novelty, and slowly becoming too much.

Look! Zombie Cupcake!

It’s hard to feel the fear of the zombie nowadays. It’s hard to be scared when a new zombie movie comes out. It is debatable whether or not this is because the story likes to remain the same – the group of survivors fighting against the classic flesh-eating beast. But it isn’t that. We routinely break the script to keep it interesting. The problem lies within the novelty of the zombie. It is going into so many different avenues, that we cannot feel scared of the zombie when they are made out of cupcakes or attacking a cartoon house guarded by plants. We can’t feel scared of them when they are on a pedometer, and we laugh at the ideas they are associated with. Zombie blood drive? That’s hilarious. Zombie marathon? That’s hilarious! Rick from the Walking Dead taking selfies with zombies? That’s so funny.

What happened to the zombie we once knew? What happened to the one we are afraid of? They seem to be disappearing as less serious zombie films are made and more people and groups jump on the bandwagon of zombie fans. It seems our horde-like culture is going to far and overpowering the undead. More people keep their products fresh with zombies so more people who think they are funny or belong to the culture will buy them in order to fit in more. It’s a vicious circle that leaves the zombie in a disadvantage. It becomes a fight of who will win? The zombies or the new culture, who insists on sticking the representation of their fears onto their iPhone and brief cases.

Next steps for the zombie

The zombie’s next steps are questionable. It is quickly becoming a novelty because its funny to put it in everything. As its roots spread, it finds its way into video games and comic books and pornographies. It finds itself in unorthodox places, as cartoons and video games. Its gone through so many avenues of society that I find it troubling. I don’t even know where else to push with this blog, so many roots have been spread.

What I do know, however, is that we need something like the zombie. It can teach us so much about ourselves, our fears, what our society thinks we fear. Perhaps one day, when we really need it, it can snap us out of a world dictated by Twitter and Facebook and constant distraction. However, it is destined to fade out, like all fads do. We can trust that the zombie will come back when we need it. Not like bell-bottom pants came back – we didn’t really need those. The zombie will come back and morph into our new fears and what our future generations fear. It will morph alongside our society, which will inevitably change. There is no other monster mailable enough. No vampire, no werewolf, no merman. The zombie is the lone monster that can show us ourselves, whether it be our physical selves, internal reflections, or our culture. Only the fictional mindless monsters can teach the real ones.

Maybe the zombie will come back as politically charged. Maybe they will come back as sexy. Maybe they will come back as a real representation of a repressive patriarchy. I have no doubt that the zombie will come back with a fury. It will be our fears again, representation of ourselves again, but this time perhaps we will be the scientist. Perhaps we will push the boundaries into fully understanding what the zombie can mean to us. All we can tell right now is zombie culture is so important to us and our cultural hold is so strong it is bound to disappear from our hands. We did this to the zombie, and again I ask who is creating an apocalypse for who.

That brings us to the end. It has been an amazing couple of months, and I’ll miss the undead. They really mean a lot to me now.

Hope you enjoyed learning about them, and remember to keep pushing the boundaries of society, keep thinking critically, and GARGLSJSLHDHSLALAAALA

(That’s zombie for ‘The End’)

Music like Magic

I’m painfully cold tonight in my thin t-shirt, but I know I’ll find relief soon because people are wonderful, and they create this thing called body heat that intensifies with numbers, and this here, is a good sized crowd. Well, actually I can’t see how many people there are because I barely stand over five feet, but judging from all the voices I hear there are hundreds of us. We have all congregated into one packed mass to listen to and watch Matt and Kim perform. Slow, jazzy music is playing before the indie duo comes on stage. I, along with many others in the crowd, begin to sway with the music. It’s like a ritual; you have to slowly let your mind go then the concert takes you out of this place, reality, and it takes you someplace full of neon colors and of life, a place empty of worry, and where you lose control of your body as you submit it to the will of the crowd. I anticipate the upcoming trip.

After carefully inspecting and re-inspecting every piece of musical equipment a very rad looking gentleman leaves the stage. This is it, I think to myself. Matt and Kim are finally going to come on stage. The stage, as well as the sky, is dark so I don’t actually witness the second Matt and Kim appear, but I know they’re there because of all the mad shouting. I shout too, and at last I see them in the flesh leaping into the spotlights and toward their instruments. Kim, in all her muscular glory, jumps on top of her drum raising her arms high over her head. Her ability to balance on the edge of her drum amazes me. Matt yells an eager greeting into the microphone. As if controlled by some sorcery, we the crowd, instantly begin screaming, jumping up, and reaching our hands toward the stage. Matt begins hitting playful chords on his keyboard as Kim energetically bangs on her drums producing a fast, catchy, beat. For a moment the two appear as worshipped entities. They stand on their elevated, hilltop palace, illuminated by colorful lights, and here below, singing, praising, and dancing, are their dedicated followers. The trip has finally been initiated.

As the music continues the crowd begins to melt. In the center of the crowd it feels as hot as a Texas’ summer. I begin to wonder if the heat is a factor in the slow descent into delirium as the concert continues. Pink, blue, and white lights flash chaotically across the stage and crowd. I look around and am amused by what I see. A few bodies down to my right, a long haired teenager struggles to hold his body up. He laughs uncontrollably as he shares his flask with those standing nearest to him. The smell of alcohol invaded the crowd long before he pulled out his flask. It’s just another ingredient in the typical college crowd. To my left stand a row of obnoxious girls. They all look like clones of each other with their carefully styled manes of curly hair and sheer tops paired with shorts the size of panties. I guess they didn’t know this was an indie concert –not a grinding festival. The first forty minutes go well for me…until the two hundred pound sweaty guys begin to shove their way through the crowd completely unaware of all the tiny people they may be crushing. I never liked these guys. They seem to show up at every concert I attend, blocking my view, and suffocating me with the horrendous smell of their sweat. Luckily they keep moving forward leaving me only with bruised toes. This has no effect on my ability to jump and dance.

Although I’ve become weak mentally and physically from moving nonstop, Matt and Kim continue to sing with an overwhelming amount of liveliness. Kim looks as though she has been sitting out in the rain. Dripping with sweat she continues to wear a huge smile that has not disappeared even once since the start of the concert, and Matt continues pounding his fingers across his keyboard while assuming unusual positions such as playing while one leg is extended out back into the air. This drives us wild and we scream for more. Matt shoots tubes of paper confetti over the crowd and everything becomes surreal. These pieces of paper drift down from the black sky toward my open hands. They fall so slowly and even though Matt and Kim are playing “Yeah, Yea”, a very fast paced song, it feels as though time has slowed to match the pace of the falling confetti. With every flash of neon light I see different bodies, different faces, all with mouths wide open, singing, and laughing, as they, like me, reach up trying to catch falling confetti: we’ve already become one. I don’t know who these people around me are, but tonight we’ve gathered with one thing in common, we’re friends jamming out to the same songs. Like a good friend I help some fellow crowd member who has suddenly dropped to the floor in front of me. I hear her shouting that she’s lost her glasses. I help her look for them and I laugh at how much she looks like Velma from Scooby Doo blindly crawling around the ground. Then a few moments later I find myself helping to lift a heavy man into the air. His crowd surfing skills are lacking and his body smacks into the ground. I and a few others who hear his magnificent thump gasp, but then he pops head up with a smile yelling, “I’m okay!” I laugh uncontrollably at his ridiculous fall, but then I suddenly hear Matt break into the first line of “Daylight”, my favorite song by the duo. Instantly I’m taken back three years ago.

Three years ago I was in Texas and a sophomore at Smithson Valley high school, home of the Rangers! And I adored a handsome boy named Lex. One day he handed me a CD full of songs by a variety of unheard of bands one of which was Matt and Kim. I listened to their song “Daylight” on repeat for days. The song filled me with so much energy and it made me giddy. I always thought of Lex when I heard it. He was such a kind, interesting and shy person which is too bad because I was incredibly shy which made each encounter slightly awkward, and in the end I could never tell him what a cool person I thought he was. But still, every time I hear that song I think back to those simple high school days full of daydreaming, futile crushes, going into town with my girlfriends to shop at the La Cantera mall, and relaxing with long walks in the beautiful Texas hill country.

Unfortunately Matt and Kim stop after playing “Daylight”. The crowd becomes upset and surges forward asking for more. The friend that I came with is desperate to escape because of the pain in her ears and begins dragging my body out of the crowd. But my mind lingers in front of the stage begging to feel at home once more. I miss Texas; I miss my family, my best friends, and the cute boys I used talk with. Fortunately I’ve figured out that being a part of Iowa’s music scene can take me back home anytime I want. There’s something in the melody filled airwaves that has the ability to conjure up every single one of the fond memories I have, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to figure out how that magic works.

Dylan leaves the house to go to his new job.

At school, Emma is freaked out and talks to Norman. She says she only wanted to hang out with Norman and that’s why she suggested looking for the dead woman’s grave. But now that she’s seen the shed, she is afraid. Norman tells her to stop hanging onto the journal because it’s pornographic and he gets defensive when she says that she found it in his room. He says he was going to throw it away.

During a test in class Norman seems unresponsive. He keeps imagining the haunting images from the journal, and he also imagines his teacher being tied and bound. He passes out and ends up in the hospital.

Dylan and his new co-worker head out the hidden pot field that Norman and Emma discovered in episode 2. There’s $5 million worth of weed in the field, and Dylan will be paid $300 a day to help protect it.

Norma is at the hospital with Norman, but she has to leave to handle the new carpet installation at the motel. As she walks out of the room Bradley arrives. She climbs into the bed with him to keep him company, and she says that her father is a medically induced coma.

Sheriff Romero has arrived at Norma’s house with a search warrant. Norma runs back to the hospital and brings him home against the doctor’s orders.

Norman tearfully confesses to Norma that he kept Keith’s belt hidden under his bed, and now that the police have left he sees that it is missing.

Emma arrives at Norman’s house and insists that they keep searching for the dead woman’s grave. He shows her room 4 at the motel, where he found the journal. In the bathroom, under the sink, there’s Chinese characters and Emma concludes the woman was chained to that exact sink as depicted in the journal.

Norma meets with Deputy Shelby and starts a pity party about Romero barging into her home. She tries to get information from him to see if the police found anything, but he doesn’t answer. Instead he invites her to dinner at his home.

Norma arrives at Shelby’s home and she asks again about the search warrant. Shelby reveals that he found Keith’s belt and took it. He didn’t tell Romero or the other officers that he found it. He says Keith was a bully, and he asks if what happened to Keith was an accident. He asks if Norman killed Keith and she says no. Shelby says he’s going to take care of her and she doesn’t need to worry. They start making out.

Dylan comes home and finds Norman on the couch. Norman is worried because Norma has been out for hours and she hasn’t answered his text messages or phone calls. Dylan says Norma is smothering him and he needs to get out more and experience life. They share a laugh about how screwed up their family is, and they both apologize for trying to kill each other in the previous episode.

Norma comes home and tells him that Shelby wants to help them. Norman doesn’t trust Shelby and he thinks the deputy will try to make Norma do things that she doesn’t want to do. Norman apologizes again for keeping the belt, and he said that he wanted to keep it as a memento. She snuggles against Norman and he seems happy again.

At school Norman tries to have a conversation with Bradley but Emma takes him to the side and tells him that the Chinese characters mean ‘Beautiful.’ Norman snaps at her when she says that she’s going to call the police and have them look at room 4 in the motel.

Norman is at home, in bed, and Norma walks in. She says he’s right that Shelby may make her do things she doesn’t want to do in exchange for holding onto the belt. She says that’s exactly what happened with Norman’s father. She tells Norman that he knows what he must do- get the belt back. Then it’s shown that Norma is not actually in the room, and Norman is just imagining that’s speaking with her.

Norman goes to Shelby’s house in the middle of the night. He starts searching for the belt and Shelby’s crazy, angry dog starts attacking him. He locks the dog in one of the bedrooms and heads down to the basement, where he finds a young Chinese woman lying on the floor. She is weak and has bruises on her arms like she’s been injected with a needle multiple times. She asks Norman to help her, and then Shelby pulls up outside. He walks into his house and the dog is still barking.
THE END
