When Juan Pablo Montoya arrived for his first Indy 500, the story is that he took a tour bus around

When Juan Pablo Montoya arrived for his first Indy 500, the story is that he took a tour bus around the track.

10 years later, the Colombian is probably the only driver to have raced at Indy in two different directions and three kinds of machinery. Montoya won the Indy 500 in 2000, has competed in F1 races at the Brickyard (driving clockwise), and now competes in the Brickyard 400 as a Nascar driver.

Bus tours not included.

Name any other driver who can claim such a feat. For good measure, throw in wins at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Say what you want about Jimmie Johnson and his four titles, Montoya is the most versatile and talented driver on the grid. There is no arguing with Johnson’s dominance, nor that of his crew chief, Chad Knaus. But for sheer talent and the raw ability to get into a race car–any kind of car–no one beats Montoya.

In Nascar, success begets success. This goes a long way towards explaining the Hendrick team’s dominance in the sport (although it does not explain why Dale Earnhardt, Jr. continues to flail on the same team as a four-time champion). Johnson is at the peak of his abilities right now, and his team is right there with him. He finds a way to win, and he has learned to be consistent week in and week out (something Kyle Busch hasn’t grasped). The Chase, contrived as it is, rewards consistency.

Montoya finished 8th in the Chase this year, but this year he delivered the goods. Many thought Montoya was foolish to trade the rarefied air conditioning of F1 for the cold beer and corndogs of Nascar. Why would anyone making tens of millions of dollars in F1 trade that for a grueling 36-race calendar? Racers, that’s who.

This is a driver who won the Indy 500 in 2000, and was “traded” to the Williams F1 team for 2001. In the Brazilian Grand Prix that year, Montoya forced world champion Michael Schumacher onto the grass in an overtaking maneuver that shocked and thrilled the paddock. Wheel-to-wheel with one of the best racers in history, and no backing down. Yet, after a few seasons, Montoya lost patience with Williams, with the utter Englishness of it all. He joined McLaren.

McLaren was a terrible fit for Montoya, and many wondered what Ron Dennis was thinking with that move. It was hard imagining Montoya in the cool calm collective that is McLaren. It did not help Montoya’s case with the team that he also injured himself off track, under circumstances that probably involved reckless behavior.

At the US Grand Prix in 2006, Montoya collided with his teammate. There are many forms of sin in racing, but the most unforgiveable sin is to take out your own teammate. Montoya’s F1 career–his driving career–seemed done.

After a telephone chat with Chip Ganassi, Montoya announced a shock switch to Nascar for 2007. He was ridiculed by those in F1 who said that Nascar was beneath his talents, and others who said he was beneath Nascar. Yet, to his credit, Montoya produced a road win at Sonoma in his first year (although, in fairness, he took out his teammate for the win. La plus ca change….) He even joined Ganassi drivers for a win at the 24 hour race at Daytona. Fast in any kind of machinery indeed…..

This year Montoya reached the next level and was competitive in the Chase up to the bitter end. Perhaps Ganassi’s tie-up with the DEI organization made the difference, maybe it’s just maturity and experience finally showing through. His driving remains aggressive, but he is showing more patience in races.

Montoya has won the Monaco Grand Prix in F1, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, and the Indianapolis 500. He’s won twice in Nascar and regularly finishes in the top five. Find me a more complete racer.

Juan Pablo Montoya is always on the limit. And that’s why he’s a racer we like.

In a matter of weeks, the driver market has upended itself. The world champion has left his team and joined the 2008 world champion. The 2007 world champion is out of racing, his spot taken by the 2005-2006 world champion. A seven-time world champion is thinking of returning to the grid.

Got it?

No one was surprised when two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was announced at Ferrari. Then, with Kimi Raikkonen seemingly ousted from the scuderia and Toyota announcing its withdrawal from the sport, Jenson Button landed at McLaren. This earth-shattering news came just weeks after Button won the 2009 title for Brawn.

My head is beginning to hurt.

At first blush, Button’s move seems hard to explain. Brawn had thrown him a lifeline after Honda pulled the plug on its adventure in team ownership. Brawn cleverly exploited the regulations in creating a double-diffuser that placed its car at the sharp end, landing Button his first world championship and a second consecutive British champion.

Button predictably increased his salary demands. Brawn should have seen this coming, and to not have recognized Button’s increased worth was a mistake. Perhaps Brawn thought Button would stay out of loyalty. A quick glance at some of Button’s career moves suggests that he is less than reliable when it comes to cashing in on a promise.

My theory is that Button sensed a resurgent McLaren at the end of the year, once the other teams had caught up to Brawn and Red Bull’s “unfair advantage”. We saw the title contenders close in on Button at the end of the year. Possibly, Button calculated that Brawn would never meet his salary demands, whereas McLaren was happy to shell out for two British champions . Button’s move is characteristic of his career trajectory, similar to his on-again, off-again move to Williams several years ago.

Raikonnen’s disappearance from the grid next season is hard to explain, although rumors are floating that he will replace Button at the newly rebranded Mercedes F1 team, the three-pointed star having bought Brawn (and presumably thinking Button as well), being shocked to find out that longtime “partner” Ron Dennis had just bought Button for McLaren. I saw that as a nice “f– you” to Norbert Haug for buying Brawn, and a middle finger firmly directed at Ross for sorting out the double diffuser first.

Now Eddie Jordan, of all people, is saying that Mercedes is in negotiations to sign Michael Schumacher. The Schumacher-Raikonnen pairing was a near-miss when Michael retired, but it’s obvious from his aborted comeback of earlier this year that the fire burns. Remember that his comeback was stopped cold by a neck injury. This could be a pairing for the ages, or a disaster for either driver.

I questioned this story but wondered why Eddie Jordan would put it out without having some sense of the facts. Eddie’s been known to stretch the truth (in fact, one might argue that’s what got him in to F1), but this is a big chunk of gossip to throw out there without a firm belief in its truth. Eddie still likes his credibility.

It has all the makings for an incredible 2010. Alonso in a Ferrari is mouth-watering. With a decent car, Alonso could easily win his third title and bring the championship home to Maranello next season. Notice I don’t mention Felipe; I’m sorry but his injuries are too severe for him to be the same driver who nearly won the title in 2008. Michael in a Mercedes, alongside Raikonnen, is the matchup we all waited for when Kimi went to Maranello. And two world champions in silver cars, rising above it all.

Just a couple of weeks after Brawn GP ended their maiden formula 1 season with both driver’s and constructors championships, it was announced today that Mercedes will be taking over the Brackley based team. This comes as rumors are suggesting, stronger than ever, that Jenson Button will be teaming up with Lewis Hamilton over at McLaren.

In some respects it is a shame that the team which rose from the ashes of the Honda F1 team will not have a chance to repeat their success under the same name the next year, however, it looks as if Mercedes will bring some stability to the turmoil which has rocked the sport with regards to teams pulling out. This is not to say that Brawn were ever looking likely to follow in the footsteps of Honda, Toyota and possibly Renault, however having a car manufacturers name on the teams list can give a little hope to the future of Formula 1.

McLaren will still have engines supplied to them for free until 2014 and this news allowed Ron Dennis to doll out some top notch “Ronspeak”

“I’ve often stated that it’s my belief that, in order to survive and thrive in 21st Century Formula 1, a team must become much more than merely a team.
Going back to Jenson’s situation, it would be fantastic to see two, British, championship winning drivers in the same team and I doubt there would be too much of a problem with rivalry, even though McLaren is Lewis’ team at the moment. Plus it is looking likely that McLaren will be strong next year, having missed out on 2009 car development due to the 2008 championship. We saw just how strong the team is at the back end of this season, running at the front of the pack and being on the podium a number of times but just missing out on another win at the final race in Abu Dhabi after a very strong weekend.

If you have read the BBC post regarding Button’s possible move (in my Delicious bookmarks) then you may have noted the valid point on the different driving styles. Whilst this could prove a problem, if there is a team which can pull it off, it is McLaren and Ferrari are in a similar situation with Alonso and Massa.

On a final note I heard somewhere that a film was being planned on Brawn GP’s rise to dominance this year. The news of the take over can only give this story a more dramatic and positive ending. People will be saying, “Do you remember the ‘09 season with Brawn…” for years to come!

McLaren Group boss Ron Dennis believes that his company’s Formula 1 team will come out of its

McLaren Group boss Ron Dennis believes that his company’s Formula 1 team will come out of its revised partnership with Mercedes-Benz a stronger force thanks to its increased independence.

Mercedes-Benz announced on Monday that it was to focus its efforts on Brawn GP , and bring an end to what had been an exclusive tie-up with McLaren.

Although those plans mean McLaren will not enjoy the financial support from Mercedes-Benz it has had in the past, Dennis believes that the benefits of being free to run its own car company, McLaren Automotive, will actually be a help to its F1 efforts.

His stance comes after a deal was struck with Mercedes-Benz to confirm the German car maker will supply engines until the end of 2015 at the earliest – with options available to keep the partnership going beyond then.

McLaren will also continue to run in the silver and red colours that have been a hallmark of its tie-up with both Mercedes-Benz and title sponsor Vodafone.

“This is a win-win situation, for both McLaren and Daimler,” said Dennis, who is chairman of McLaren Automotive and a founding shareholder in the McLaren Group.

“I’ve often stated that it’s my belief that, in order to survive and thrive in 21st-century Formula 1, a team must become much more than merely a team.

“That being the case, in order to develop and sustain the revenue streams required to compete and win grands prix and world championships, companies that run Formula 1 teams must broaden the scope of their commercial activities.

“Nonetheless, all of our partners will of course continue to play a crucial role in our Formula 1 programme. For that reason, and because the engines they produce are very competitive, we’re delighted that Mercedes-Benz has committed to continue not only as an engine supplier but also as a partner of ours until 2015 – and perhaps thereafter.”

McLaren plans to buy back the 40 percent stake in the company that Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler has had in the team, which will further strengthen McLaren’s independence.

Dennis added: “The next few years will be a very exciting time for McLaren, during which period we intend to become an ever-stronger technological and economic force. Formula 1 will always be a core activity, for sound business reasons as well as for historical sporting reasons: to be clear, our Formula 1 business has traditionally enjoyed great financial security, largely as a consequence of the longevity of our contracts with our partners, many of which have exceeded 15 years of continuous involvement with McLaren. Indeed, two of our partners have been with us for more than 25 years.

“We’re risk-averse by design. Over the past two years we’ve analysed in great detail the challenge of entering the high-performance production sports car market. In the MP4-12C, which will be introduced to market in 2011, we have a car that has inherited the genes of the iconic McLaren F1 of 1994 and has already been the subject of much global media acclaim.

“It is proposed that it will be produced in a new state-of-the-art production facility adjacent to the existing award-winning McLaren Technology Centre at Woking.”

One perfect year – and then it was all over. The news today of German motoring giant Mercedes

One perfect year – and then it was all over.

The news today of German motoring giant Mercedes shifting its weight from McLaren to Brawn GP means that this season’s double champions will become the ultimate motorsport one-hit wonder.

Brawn GP: one glorious season is all we get

The new Mercedes Silver Arrows team will be many things – a formidable, well-resourced contender first among them. But one thing it will not be is the team that thousands of fans fell instantly in love with as they watched its journey from the edge of extinction to the summit of the sport.

Mercedes has announced today that it is “re-aligning” its relationship with McLaren and will become merely an engine supplier to the team with which it has won three drivers’ titles and a constructors’ championship since the current partnership began in 1995.

It will instead be running the former Brawn GP as a silver-liveried works team with one, and possibly two, German drivers and is expected to revive its Silver Arrows branding for the occasion.

Twelve months ago, Brawn GP didn’t even exist as Honda announced on December 5 2009 that it would be pulling out of F1 with immediate effect. That left its staff at Brackley, from cleaners, engineers and caterers to designers, executives and drivers, with no clue if they would even have jobs in six months’ time.

During an uncertain winter a rescue bid was put together by the management team of Ross Brawn and Nick Fry who bought the team to run as an independent outfit. McLaren gave its permission for its engine supplier, Mercedes, to help the new squad make it to the grid.

The McLaren-Mercedes partnership has been enduring and strong

That new squad took part in January testing with plain white, sponsorship-free cars emblazoned with the legend ‘Brawn GP’. Fans rallied behind the new outfit in their thousands.

The cars, driven by the old Honda partnership of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, both of whom might have justifiably have wondered if they would ever drive in F1 again, blew the socks off the other teams and it was clear that the championship-winning Ross Brawn was back in business.

Brawn GP managed an unbelievable inaugural year in which it won both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles from its inauspicious start as December’s child. More and more fans got behind it – and revelled in its success.

Now those fans, like Minardi’s in 2006, are facing the prospect of a new season with their team bought out by a bigger entity, re-named, re-branded and changed beyond recognition.

Who will drive?

The new world champion - still job-hunting despite the silverware

Jenson Button may have won the world championship for Brawn. But – unlike the formerly eponymous team principal – that doesn’t mean his services are considered essential for next year.

Nico Rosberg is widely accepted as one of the team’s 2010 drivers. And Lewis Hamilton is locked into one of the McLaren seats. Who fills the other two gaps still seems very much up for grabs.

Button could well find himself in the thoroughly disadvantageous position of backing up Hamilton in a team and a car built around the 2008 champion – whose driving style and requirements from a car are very different to the current champion’s.

At first glance, a Button-Hamilton partnership might appear to turn McLaren into Britain’s equivalent of Force India, US F1, Ferrari or Malaysia’s new Lotus team – but each driver has partisan fans that are unlikely to warm to the other.

And McLaren strategists, led by Ron Dennis, have grand plans for their business that are unlikely to include turning the race team into a new Team GBR (more on this later).

If Button stays at Brackley – as most insiders still expect – the partnership with Rosberg will be a strong one. But it might not best suit Mercedes, which seems likely to be as German a team as Ferrari is Italian. Unlike the Maranello outfit, and unlike McLaren, that could extend to requiring a pair of drivers of the same nationality.

The name that seems set to be the fourth partner in this dance is Nick Heidfeld – quick, reliable, non-controversial, a known team player, a former McLaren development driver, German, and unlikely to overshadow a star lead driver. He could end up at whichever team doesn’t take Button.

Either way, Button is unlikely to be the ultimate loser. Increasingly, there seems no vacancy for Kimi Raikkonen’s questionable commitment, high wage demands and lack of enthusiasm for commercial and promotional work.

Mercedes buy-out – and McLaren’s future

Car-maker Mercedes seems determined to be the manufacturer that bucks the trend and makes its involvement in F1 pay as its peers desert the sport in droves.

Brawn GP today released this heavily-Photoshopped concept of a Mercedes Silver Arrow car

Last year it extended its engine supply from its traditional McLaren partners to Force India and Brawn. Now it plans to go the whole hog and renew its rivalry with Ferrari from the earliest days of racing.

In doing so it moves in the opposite direction to rival German carmaker BMW, which has this year abandoned its own solo effort – and the parallels are striking.

Like Mercedes, BMW ended a successful partnership with one of the big independent names in F1 because it wanted more control over its investment. And, like Mercedes, when BMW split with Williams its new plan was to buy control of a smaller privateer team run by a respected pitlane figure.

Employees at Brackley, who still bear the scars of Honda’s withdrawal, will be hoping that Mercedes prove more committed to them than BMW did to Peter Sauber’s workers at Hinwill.

And McLaren fans and even employees may have one eye on Williams and the fate that befell that championship-winning side after its partnership with BMW was terminated. The team undoubtedly sees itself as a member of F1’s elite top table, and works constantly to return to the front of the grid, but has not yet made up the lost ground.

Some of the most interesting developments in this saga, at least when it comes to the future, seem to involve McLaren and its plans for the next few years.

According to its press statement released today, it comes out of the deal able to buy back the 40 per cent of the team owned by Mercedes’ parent company and with an engine deal for at least the next six years.

Ron Dennis has a strategy for McLaren that might not have room for Mercedes

But the economic red meat of the story is in this sentence: “McLaren Automotive has been spun out of the McLaren Group and from 2011 will begin to manufacture its own range of high-performance production sports cars, targeted to penetrate a series of meticulously-selected premium automotive market segments.”

Those segments are the ones currently filled with Mercedes SLKs and coupés. And it looks very much as if, in order to keep even this level of connection between the two companies, McLaren has been required to put clear blue water between its car production division and its racing team.

Let’s give McLaren Automotive chairman and race team architect Ron Dennis the final word. Here’s what he had to say about the development. This being Ron, it’s not a particularly brief or pithy quote, but do read it through to the end, it will prove worthwhile:

“The next few years will be a very exciting time for McLaren, during which period we intend to become an ever-stronger technological and economic force.

“Formula 1 will always be a core activity, for sound business reasons as well as for historical sporting reasons: to be clear, our Formula 1 business has traditionally enjoyed great financial security, largely as a consequence of the longevity of our contracts with our partners, many of which have exceeded 15 years of continuous involvement with McLaren.

It is proposed that it will be produced in a new state-of-the-art production facility adjacent to the existing award-winning McLaren Technology Centre at Woking.”

In April this year, when Dennis handed over the team principal’s role to Martin Whitmarsh, we wrote of the development under the headline McLaren diversifies away from F1.

It still looks to us as if this is exactly what McLaren is doing – realising Dennis’ long-held ambition of turning his outfit into the British Ferrari. Because, as the proverb goes, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.

And that’s a saying that applies even more strongly to the brutally unsentimental way in which Brawn GP – for all its 2009 success and committed fanbase – has been dispatched to the pages of F1 history after just one glorious season.

As most expected, earlier today Mercedes bought into Brawn GP, a 75% share is the believed holding. McLaren have dismissed rumours of a McLaren engine, at least in the next few years, by releasing this statement:

McLaren and Mercedes-Benz are delighted to announce a realigned long-term strategic alliance.

The agreement covers the next six Formula 1 seasons (2010-15) and also provides mechanisms whereby the partnership may continue beyond 2015.

Read the full release over at the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes website.

McLaren have bought back the 40% share that Mercedes owned.

The question of Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen and who, or if, they will drive for next year has not been answered. What is only speculation so far, seems to be leaning more and more in the direction of Jenson Button driving for McLaren in 2010 with the all German team of Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld at Brawn GP.

On the their official F1 Twitter feed McLaren have just tweeted the following:

Ron Dennis made an inspiring speech to the whole company today, discussing the long-term strategy for the entire McLaren Group.

I’ll be looking forward to a return to the red and white livery if that does indeed happen.

Forever in the news, McLaren, Mercedes and Brawn GP are at least making this off season an exciting one so far. The next few weeks, and possibly months, of driver roulette will ensure the 2010 season will be here in no time.

Mercedes Benz have announced that they have purchased a controlling 75% stake in the Brawn GP team.

The German automobile giant had been speculated with a move to Ross Brawn’s championship winning team, which it supplied engines too in 2009, since September and today’s announcement seeked to tidy up the paddock thoughts ahead of 2010 preparations.

It is now likely that Brawn, who won both titles in their maiden season, will be re-named Mercedes Benz Grand Prix however Ross Brawn will stay on as Team Principal alognside Norbert Haug of Mercedes Motorsport.

Mercedes Benz will also be pulling out of McLaren with the team having to buy back the 40% shares over 2 years, but remain with the German’s as an engine supplier until 2015.

Jenson Button is now set to go to McLaren to race alongside Lewis Hamilton, the Briton visited the factory earlier this week. He claims not to be motivated by cash in the move, however his salary is likely to be greater than the £3.5million Brawn offered him.

With Nico Rosberg looking ever more likely to head to the new Mercedes GP team, Nick Heidfeld is a suprise team mate choice, Norberg Haug says he has held various meetings with the perennial underperformer ousted from BMW this season.

“We are speaking with Nick Heidfeld as well,” Haug told DPA.

“Mercedes-Benz supports the idea of signing an experienced and capable German driver. There is however no reason to finalise the driver situation too hastily.”

More news this evening.

Sottotitolo: Ode a Briatore.

Sottotitolo: Ode a Briatore.

Visto?

1) considerato un galoppino, visto che gli chiedono di fare una porcata simile;
2) un galoppino che sa di esserlo, visto che ha accettato;
3) una carogna, visto che l’ha fatto;
4) un infame, visto che l’ha confessato;

I thought I would upload some more videos of the Mclaren MP4-12C. Not only do these videos give you a much better look at this car in HD but you also get to hear Mclaren Chairman Ron Dennis and Antony Sheriff talk about all the aspect of making the 12C what it is.

Some last extra thoughts: I must admit after watching this video and seeing some more angles of the car I am really starting to take a liking to it. They have kept a bit of the Mclaren F1 spirit alive in this new addition while giving it it’s own character. I think this Formula 1 inspired sports car will be a big hit. Don’t you?

Thumbs up. It really grows on you when you give it a chance to seep in. No matter what though, I’m still not a big fan of those wheels.
