It’s been a bad week for Floridian sports stars when it comes to getting knocked out unconscious. First it was golfer Tiger Woods, knocked out by his wife and a golf club, and last night Roy Jones got it from a fellow boxer.

Basically..40-year-old Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out last night by Australian Danny Green, who retained his IBF World Cruiserweight title in Australia last night.

This opens the March 13th date up for the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout that would have been postponed to a later date, if Roy had won, due to a scheduled bout against Bernard Hopkins, in a battle of the grandads.

The bout will never happen with the outcome for Roy last night.

The AP reports…Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.

The 36-year-old Green retained his title and improved to 28-3 with his technical knockout over Jones at the Acer Arena, in the American’s first professional fight on foreign soil in his 20-year career.

It was only Jones’ sixth loss since 1989, along with 54 wins, 40 by knockout.

Green floored Jones with a right hand to the head after one minute. Green moved in to apply more pressure, and following a series of blows, English referee Howard Foster stopped the bout after just 122 seconds.

Jones offered no excuses for a defeat which could signal the end of his career.

“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny,” Jones said.

Green was almost apologetic for handing such a defeat to one of his boxing role models.

Green, who only came out of a 13-month retirement in April, 

“That almost hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring,” he said.

“I am just overwhelmed – this is the greatest victory in my entire life.”

Jones Jr is now unlikely to continue in the ring and said: “I have got to take my hat off to Danny, it was a great performance. I guess now I go back into retirement.”

Jones had to win the Green fight for the Hopkins fight to happen on HBO on the March 13th date.

Now, hopefully boxing fans can be treated to a real battle between two boxers in their prime, and that is Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

In defeat,Roy Jones, Jr. officially hands March 13 HBO date to Arum, Pacquiao, and Mayweather…and I say Thank you Roy, I was a big fan of yours, won and lost bets based on my confidence in you.

Roy Jones, Jr. has earned his retirement, and I hope he goes back to broadcasting fights,starting with Mayweather and Pacquiao.

B-Hop will find someone else to knock out…he is still going strong at his advanced age,and as you can see, not every boxer can do what B-Hop does especially at his age.

A surprising thing happened this evening at the ABC New Hampshire Republican debate. Only 2 candidates showed up.

The first candidates name was Fredmitt McGiulihuck. This candidate is an advocate for bankruptcy, warrant-less wire tapping, and attacking nations with aggressive war. He believes in policing the world, and thinks fanatic Muslims hate us because of our freedom.

Candidate number two goes by the name Ron Paul. He is a 10 term Congressman from Texas. He is an advocate for freedom, peace, and prosperity. This man is well read and researched on America’s foreign policy, and believes in learning from history. He seeks to restore our standing with the world, and restore the civil liberties that Fredmitt McGiulihuck has been taking away.

Ron Paul showed up to discuss the Constitution, the rule of law, ending the war, and bringing fiscal responsibility back. Mr. McGiulihuck showed up to uphold the status quo. Surprisingly he spent a large majority of his time attacking Ron Paul. He attacked Ron Paul’s foreign policy understanding, and insisted that terrorists hate America because of our freedom.

Ron Paul asked Fredmitt how he would feel if China tried to occupy America. Upon this, McGiulihuck laughed and failed to acknowledge the question.

As an audience member, I like what Ron Paul has to say. Fredmitt McGiulihuck can go bomb himself with a weapon he can’t afford.

Tonight begins the crazy political marathon that will run straight through to the New Hampshire Primary this Tuesday. In the next 2 days there will be 2 televised Republican debates, and countless town hall meetings, and meet and greets.
With a state like New Hampshire having over 40% of registered voters identifying themselves as independent, many votes are still up for grabs. This is an ideal state for a candidate such as Ron Paul. The Live Free or Die libertarian leaning New Hampshire undoubtedly resonates well with Dr. Ron Paul, the leading advocate of liberty.

The most recent scientific poll from Rasmussen shows Ron Paul in third place at 14%, behind McCain and Romney. We all expect Ron Paul to perform far outside of the limiting, and often unfair scientific polls, however seeing a number well into the teens definitely gives the Ron Paul Campaign that much more optimism for Tuesday.

One interesting, and positive event to note is the decision of the New Hampshire state GOP to pull out of tomorrow evenings Fox News debate forum. Due to Fox’s decision to exclude major candidate Ron Paul, the GOP had no choice but to withdraw their support. This must be applauded by all American’s. Ron Paul’s point of view may not be shared by the establishment Republicans, but it is great to know that we do have at least some fighting for the right of the message to be heard.

Tune in to the Republican debate on ABC this evening.

Well, the first test is over. 10% wouldn’t be significant…. if there was a candidate taking 60% or more of the pie. However, when we have the winner scoring in the 30’s it’s quite notable.

Why is 5th place @ 10% a significant boost for The Ron Paul campaign? Well, the reasons are many.

First off, Ron Paul started off almost a year ago not even showing up on Iowa’s polling radar. He has been touted as the laughable fringe candidate that only lives “online.” 10% is hardly fringe votes.

In an interview earlier today campaign manager Kent Snyder discussed how difficult it is to get from 1% to 10%. And how exponentially quicker it is to make the jump from 10% to a majority.

Iowa is an off state. It’s importance is merely in the respect that it is the first state in the nation to pick party lines. It is automatically discounted, when you look at the fact that 60% of the state identifies itself as “evangelical”, and all the more polar when we see that 80% of the Huckster’s vote identified themselves as “evangelical.” In no way am I saying Evangelical Christians are all loonies, but merely pointing out their “herd” mentality for the most part. These are the people that march against the death of the unborn, and at the flip of a switch march in support of the murder of millions in America’s endless, un-winnable wars.So looking at the climate and environment of Iowa, isn’t it actually invigorating to see where Dr. Paul is at? He slaughtered “front-runner” Giuliani, and came within a few points of 3rd place.

If John McCain is bragging about his 4th place finish @ 13%, how much more should the Ron Paul Revolution be ecstatic, knowing that the revolution is real. The people are out there, and they are showing up to vote.The media is talking about us. Some of them are even calling for Dr. Paul to be let in to the “fair and balanced” Fox News debate forum, which has still been obstinate to consistent demands to let Ron Paul speak.

As we look forward to New Hampshire and then to South Carolina, good things are ahead. From Zogby’s prediction that Ron Paul could end up surprising the New Hampshire vote we will propel the campaign into light speed. Our rocket (or blimp) will be moving a speed and strength which no one can stop, not even the most determined neo con machine.

Yes it’s true, the Ron Paul Revolution has begun!

Being a previous Ron Paul donor, I’m on his email list. I received an email yesterday (12/29/07) with the subject “The time is now.” It’s also displayed on the campaign website here.

I have to give Kent Snyder praise for creativity. He’s come up with a plan to spend $23 million dollars, in addition to what’s in the bank so far. That’s more coin than I have in my couch. But there are a lot of couches out there.

The email talks about the contests of Iowa and New Hampshire in the first few days of January, followed by Wyoming, Michigan, Nevada, South Carolina, Florida and Maine.

Feb. 5 will have nearly 20 other states. In the email, the money will be used “to run radio and television ads in 20 states simultaneously”, voter mailings, and other projects.

The email urges supporters to “triple” their efforts.

A few months ago, the Ron Paul campaign was thankful for getting $5 million for the third quarter. Everyone was amazed by the $4 million raised on November 5th and $6 million raised on December 16th. The fourth quarter will probably finish close to $20 million. I expect there will a slight end of year push Monday.

I can send another couple hundred dollars, but I’m getting to my limit. Another $23 million in one month will be a stretch, but not impossible. For the month of January (31 days), that’s about $742,000 per day. I made that same sort of calculation in October when the campaign asked for $12 million in three months. They got way more than that–by nearly $7 million! I think there will have to be some thermonuclear money bombs, something like in Dune. The Nov. 5 and Dec. 16 money bombs made up for the slow start in October. There would have to be four of those $6 million days to reach the $23 million goal. That’s a lot to ask. But it may happen.

If this race goes much beyond Feb. 5, it will become a war of attrition. Romney and Giuliani have the cash to keep going, but they’re the only ones. Romney is polling well in Iowa and New Hampshire, so I believe he will finish in the top three in both. Giuliani is putting his eggs in the Feb. 5 basket, because it doesn’t look like he will get a state until Nevada, or maybe Florida. If it’s a close race, perhaps the top three will be able to rally the troops one last time. It’ll be a slugfest in every neglected state through the summer. And that will take more money.

Iowa and New Hampshire will affect the fundraising of those candidates remaining. After Michigan (Jan. 15), I bet this will be a four-man race. No matter who I say will stay or go, I’ll get a stream of hate comments below. The names don’t matter. May the best man win!

On the one hand, I’m thankful the campaign is putting out there the need and being open what it will spend it on. But on the other, the “we” have been the grassroots support, not the central campaign. Even if only $10 million or $5 million are raised in January, I’m sure the campaign will put it to good use. Regardless, it will be greater than any of the other Republicans. They will be crying with their pollsters.

I’ve been reading Sun Tzu lately. The best way to win wars is to fight them quickly with overwhelming force. The chieftains across the internet are making their calculations and the warriors are provisioning sufficiently before battle commences. That’s if they can stop playing World of Warcraft for a day, and start overturning cushions.

I don’t know when those money bombs will start dropping. I can see the third Monday in January (this year Jan. 21), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as one battle day. Dr. Paul’s non-violence message would fit nicely then. I’m sure Mr. Lyman has an event or two in mind.

Without mentioning his name, Karl Rove made it clear during a recent appearance on Hannity and Colmes that he is worried about people jumping on a bandwagon and supporting a candidate who picks up momentum as a result of the early Republican primaries being bunched together tightly.

Since Rove had already discussed the other Republican candidates in the Fox News piece, he could only have been referring to Congressman Ron Paul.

The man who was dubbed “the architect” and “Bush’s brain” told Hannity he was concerned that the thick and fast style of the early primaries would hinder Americans from making a “more considered judgment,” increasing the likelihood of a “bandwagon effect” overcoming “national reputation.”

HANNITY: Do you lean towards one strategy over the other? Or you don’t want to say?

ROVE: I don’t want to say. I —HANNITY: You do, though.

ROVE: But it is interesting to see that everybody has made their strategic bets. I’m not certain, incidentally, that this is helpful for the country, for this to be settled so quickly. I mean, people do need the time — this process ought to be spread out over time, in my opinion, because it allows more people to participate, more people in the country to develop a deeper understanding of who the candidates are, and for the people of America to make a more considered judgment.This thing is happening so quick on so many different battle fronts that I’m not certain, regardless of who makes the — who bet on the right strategy, there is going to be a bandwagon effect, no, national reputation is going to count — no matter which way that works out, I’m not certain it is necessarily in the best interest of the country.

With the media desperate to exalt Mike Huckabee’s campaign as some kind of alternative to the standard Neo-Con fare, it’s clearer than ever that the establishment are trying to run a dead horse against Hillary Clinton to ensure her victory.

As polls have shown, only Congressman Ron Paul could beat Hillary should they go head to head for the presidency, and that’s why people like Rove are scared stiff of the Texan building momentum during the key early primaries.

The front-runners for the Republican presidential nomination had to take a back seat in Aiken Thursday to a long-shot candidate with a small but loyal band of supporters.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a strict constructionist, was the surprise winner of the Aiken County Republican Party presidential straw poll with 30 percent of the vote.

“I don’t necessarily know if our results will hold come Jan. 19 during the state primary, but I do think the poll reflects the opinions of those that are very active in the party,” said Andy O’Bryne, party chairman.

Paul, who up to this point has been treated as a footnote in the GOP race, is known for a loyal base which routinely raises money, buys political signs and even stages campaign events on its own accord in the Texan’s name.

In a recent South Carolina poll conducted by CBS News and released Wednesday, Paul was not even listed in the final results. Typically the congressman receives somewhere between 5 and 7 percent in national polls.

“I think Congressman Paul has energized the libertarian portion of the party,” said O’Bryne. “They are a mature but active group. But I think that some of their issues are not necessarily in line with the consensus of the rest of the party.”

Among the issues that Paul and his supporters have disagreed with the party base on is the ongoing war in Iraq. Paul, who favors isolationism in regard to foreign policy, has repeatedly spoken out against the war and for the return home of U.S. soldiers.

While Paul was the winner of the straw poll, some of the more well-known candidates also placed well. In second was Fred Thompson, a former Tennessee senator, with 28 percent, followed by Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor, with 17 percent; Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, with 11 percent; Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, both with 6 percent; and California Congressman Duncan Hunter, with 3 percent.

The straw poll, which was relegated to one of the smaller rooms in the Aiken County Council complex because of a council meeting, was a standing room only affair as more than 100 people showed up to cast a vote in support of their favorite candidate to succeed President George W. Bush in the White House.

Ron Paul Sets All-Time Fundraising Record

Unofficially, the Ron Paul campaign raised $5.92 million dollars on-line yesterday. That’s the largest amount every raised by any candidate on-line in any electoral campaign ever, anywhere. Over 57,668 Paul supporters can be justly proud of themselves and delighted about what those kind of funds can bring to their campaign.

The Boston Tea Party blitz “broke the thermometer” on the $12 million campaign quarterly goal within the first few hours. Reporters and columnists will probably be quibbling about what records it actually broke for the next week, while they’re taking rides on the Ron Paul Blimp. Volunteer promoter Trevor Lyman will probably be getting more than his 15 minutes of fame.

Campaign Records

Candidates are not required to record contribution receipts on the day they are received. They are only required to exercise “due diligence” in entering the data prior to the end of the quarter, for reporting to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Campaign offices may have stacks of checks received during the course of a week, before allocating staff to do the required data entry before a reporting deadline.

As a result, there is no way to tell, from FEC reports, what day the contributions were sent or received. The only thing known is when they were entered into the computerized reporting systems. The last day of a quarterly reporting period may be the most hectic. That’s when Hillary Clinton’s campaign entered $6.2 million dollars of contributions: June 30, 2007. At the time, her campaign publicized several million-dollar fundraising events in the prior week, but took no credit for any one-day record for receipts.

Ron Paul beat that record too! In addition to the on-line contributions, he received over $400,000+ in off-line contributions on Sunday, bringing his verified record one-day fundraising total of $6.32 million.

On-Line Receipts

In the 2004 presidential campaign, John Kerry took in $2.7 million from on-line contributions (automatically recorded into their systems on that day) two days after he “locked up” the nomination: March 6, 2004. That record was broken by the November 5^th Ron Paul Money Bomb that brought in $4.2 million.

However, FEC records indicate that the Kerry campaign entered an additional $3.0 million on the same day. There is no way to tell when those additional funds were sent or received. Nevertheless, the total of $5.7 million has been reported as a one-day fundraising record for Kerry. Ron Paul total receipts broke that dubious record by more than a half-million dollars.

Quarterly Records

The 4^th Quarter FEC reports are not due until ten days after January 1^st, 2008. Given Ron Paul’s totals, it is unlikely that any competitors will be bragging about their quarterly totals before the numbers are released by the FEC, well after the Iowa and Wyoming caucuses and the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries.

At this point, the Ron Paul effort is projected to raise over $21 million for the fourth quarter. That exceeds the third quarter totals reported by every other Republican candidate for President. None of them have reported their receipts so far this quarter, although Mike Huckabee was delighted with breaking a $2.0 million campaign goal last week. At the beginning of this quarter, Ron Paul had more cash on hand ($5m+) than any other Republican candidate except Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. Both Romney and McCain were in the red, due to debts incurred by their campaigns (for Romney, three loans from his own pocket).

For too many months, reporters have discounted Ron Paul’s credibility. He either couldn’t raise enough money (“the mother’s milk of politics”) or he couldn’t develop enough grass-roots support to turn out voters. On the first count, Paul is now the apparent leader in Republican Presidential candidate fundraising. He will undoubtedly be hiring more staff and buying more advertising. But, for real grass-roots activists, none of the campaigns even come close to the 77,949 real people who are participating in MeetUp events around the country. That’s twice as many committed supporters as all of the other campaigns (Republican and Democrat) combined. There are a dozen other social internet groups with tens of thousands of Paul supporters. In terms of grass-roots activism, nobody even comes close to the Ron Paul rEVOLution squads.

Next Sunday, Tim Russert will not be able to say “You can’t win” to Ron Paul’s face. That hour-long appearance on Meet The Press will expose millions more to the Ron Paul message. What astounds the other campaigns is that Ron has no “handlers” to “prep him” for this major appearance. He doesn’t need them. He’s been practicing for 30 years and never varied in his principles. He is naturally eloquent and he can be totally honest, because he respects voters and knows the facts. There will be a lot of people astounded by the successes of the Ron Paul campaign. And they will be astounded again when the January election results start arriving.

Ron Paul (R) of Texas set a 4th quarter fundraising goal of $12 million and hit it at 1:12 A.M. EST. At midnight, the start of his supporters’ latest grassroots moneybomb effort, his campaign had $11,551,156.57 according to his website. About an hour later Paul had raised enough to break the $12 million mark and hit his goal for the quarter.

The Tea Party started at midnight and thousands around the country have been watching since to see just how much the presidential hopeful is going to rake in with a little help from his friends.

New York City Meetup group organizer Avery Knapp, himself a liberty-loving doctor like his hero, addressed the 1,000+ member group at a large party commemorating the Tea Party celebration at the Manhattan headquarters. Inciting an already excited crowd, he encouraged them to consider the importance of the date in history:

“Ron Paul speaks of a world of peace, freedom and prosperity. But you are the makers of that world, and your children will one day reap the benefits. Ron Paul may have sparked in your imagination a better, more free world. But you are the ones who will make it so, and manifest it in your hearts, minds, and bodies for the rest of your lives. Ron Paul may have cured your apathy, but you are the passioned supporters who shall never be apathetic again.”

Huge airship takes to the air over North Carolina to promote the Ron Paul rEVOLution, battles adverse weather

The Ron Paul Blimp launched this morning over the skies of Elizabeth City, North Carolina and at current time of writing is on its way to Chester, South Carolina where it will make its first stop.

Organizers for the blimp took off this morning at 8am at the Airship Management Hangar in Elizabeth City.

The current schedule, weather permitting will see the blimp pass over Raleigh at 1 pm, Greensboro at 3pm, Charlotte at 5pm and land in Chester, SC around 6pm.

The blimp will spend the night in Chester and then head to Columbia, South Carolina in the morning.

Check the Ron Paul blimp website and blog for regular updates. The blimp’s coordinates are being relayed via GPS and a live camera feed is also broadcasting events in real time.

This is amazing.  The Ron Paul Blimp is truly making history.  As an all-out effort to promote Ron Paul’s tried and true message of freedom and hope for America, a group of his supporters have carefully planned out, succeeded, and launched a huge blimp advertising Ron Paul and his message as he is running for U.S. President in 2008.

The blimp was launched Friday morning, December 14th, at 9:23 a.m. EST from the Airship Management Hangar in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.  On one side the blimp has a huge banner that says “Who is Ron Paul?” and “Google Ron Paul.”  The other side says, “Ron Paul Revolution.”

With a few setbacks (which is probably true of almost any big project), and possibly the weather, the blimp left a little later than originally scheduled and has had to change its route.

It was originally planned for the blimp to drop tea into Boston Harbor on Sunday as part of the fund-raiser timed with the anniversary of the 1773 Boston Tea Party, then go on to New Hampshire. Instead, it will spend Sunday in another early-primary state, South Carolina, at the TeaParty07 rally in Columbia, South Carolina.  After that, there are plans to fly near Washington, D.C. and then on to New Hampshire in time for the primary

The blimp is one of the largest in the world, and flies at an average speed of about 30 miles per hour. It holds 12 passengers in addition to two pilots, and includes a restroom.

So far, a journalist from Radar magazine is scheduled to accompany the Ron Paul supporter crew on its inaugural flight. Journalists from XM Radio, CNN, ABC, US News & World Report may also hop along for the ride once the blimp nears the nation’s capital (as with any other airborne vehicle, it will only be allowed to go into the suburbs).

The scenario seems to be that as GPS co-ordinates stream to the website a map will show the Ron Paul blimp’s location in real time. Local television stations will broadcast its every move. The curious may flock together and make a trip to see history in the making. Emails with pictures will be sent, then forwarded, then forwarded again. YouTube will reach tens of millions of views as Ron Paul becomes the first presidential candidate in history to have his very own blimp.

Amazingly, when I did a Google search for “Ron Paul Blimp” I came up with 220,000 hits.  Can you believe that.  And the blimp was just launched less than 24 hours ago!  Many of the references and videos tell about the upcoming plans for the blimp.  But still this is quite excellent coverage for a brand new thing.

Living almost dead center in the middle of the U.S., it would have been nice to watch live TV coverage of the blimp being launched, but thanks to video cameras and the internet, there are videos of the take off and all the supporters that were there in North Carolina this morning.  You can still watch what happened.  If there had been a live feed to Springfield, Missouri, then a group of us supporters could have had a proxy inaugural launch of the Ron Paul Blimp in the Midwest.  Anyway, support is climbing (literally now).

Flight always seemed like freedom to me and watching the Ron Paul blimp be fitted for its decals brings a rush of emotion that you would only understand after some background.

I’ve always wanted to fly. When I was a little girl, I would swing by my knees on monkey bars and trees, just so I could gain enough height to let go, spin through the air, and land on my feet. I wrote to NASA for pictures from the Space Program and while most of my friends were seeking pictures in the clouds, I wanted to know what it felt to be in the clouds.

I made decisions in life that were prohibitive to any idea of jetting around. It’s hard for young single moms to find the money for flight instruction and after I remarried, the doc and kiddos dismissed my girlhood dream of flying. When a scheduling conflict prevented me from leaving with them for Hawaii on vacay, I drove from my office to McKinney Airport to board, for the first time, a four seat plane. I was freaked a little by my impetuousness. I mean, what if something happened to me and my husband and children were clueless? As I learned to inspect the plane pre-flight, I almost chickened out. The instructor didn’t look older than 16 and parenthood, as well as my far from girlhood age, had conditioned me with a healthy dose of worry. Finally, something snapped inside of me and I got in the plane; I knew I was supposed to be there and in that left seat.

Wearing a borrowed headset, feeling terribly self-conscience about talking a little with the tower, trying desperately to keep on the line while steering with my feet, and checking the engine at the end of the runway put butterflies in my stomach. Again there was panic and the fear that this 16 year old looking kid wasn’t qualified to ride a big wheel let alone fly a plane and that I would be found dead and my family, who would have to cut their vacation short would be angry that I’d done something so unnecessary with regard to my day to day existence. While all of those thoughts were flying through my head and heart, my body was responding to the instructions from the instructor.

I throttled up, pulled back and left every single thought of fear, guilt and selfishness on the ground. There is nothing in the world that feels like that freedom. And truthfully, I felt that freedom in the weirdest way. I realized that I couldn’t see over the nose of the plane. I didn’t know what was in front of me, but I followed the directions of an instructor who had as much on the line as I. There is nothing in the world that can compare to being as totally in the moment as you are during flight. You are free, but you’re responsible for every decision you make and you are careful not to miscalculate or lose sight of your purpose. And then you realize that the risk of leaving the ground and the reward of reconnecting safely with that ground was your purpose.

You realize that you wanted to fly and there wasn’t a damn thing anybody was going to do to change it. Of course, once you experience such freedom, it’s hard to keep it contained. Six months after my first flight, I jumped in the backseat so Little Bit could take the yoke. And, at 12, Little Bit took off from a Rockwall airstrip, landed at McKinney Airport, and got her own taste of freedom.

Some people think that this blimp is a bad use of resources. Perhaps my notion that flight equals freedom makes me biased, but I think that the blimp is a perfect way to set this idea of liberty afloat.

The Register has an article about the feud between Wikipedia and Overstock.com. The piece is basic stenography for the Overstock.com view of the matter. It laments the horrible elite that have established a form of Web “totalitarianism,” undemocratically rejecting other points of view.

The plight of the undemocratic ruling elite of Wikipedia is hardly unique. Other sites, such as Digg and Slashdot, have had similar problems in their short histories, whether it be in the realm of criticism or potential legal issues. Wikipedia’s situation is more precarious than others because unlike other sites, where everyone can say their peace and there is no need for resolution, Wikipedia entries force people to agree on one version. In this respect, the discussion is as important, if not more important, than the end result. However, Wikipedia’s challenge is unique because not everyone plays by the rules: intellectual honesty, openness to other points of view, due diligence to be informed, etc.

One of the things that has impressed me about “Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq” by Stephen Kinzer is how effective the United States was in exploiting openness in some of the governments we helped overthrow, particularly Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. All three were democracies. Fidel Castro used to taunt the United States by declaring: “Cuba is not Guatemala!” (pg. 206) Given the United States’ ability to overthrow other governments, one cannot help but conclude that Cuba’s closed society under Castro helped it resist the outside influence of the United States in ways more open societies could not.

The sobering conclusion is that democracy and an open society it requires are not utopias. However much I endorse egalitarian ideas, I also have to respect the fact it might require undemocratic means to defend them. These ruling cliques might be a necessary defense mechanism to protect the site from abuse. The legitimate question is not whether it is necessary to empower people with special privileges, but rather how are privileges determined, how do we determine who to empower, and what oversight is there to ensure those powers are being used properly? The flawed assumption of the ruling clique is that they are doing “good” or they know what is “best.” The assumption of “good intentions” must always be forcefully challenged.

The relevant point is that better implementation of egalitarian ideas would not fill the world with people that I like such as, Naomi Klein, Amy Goodman or Noam Chomsky, to name a few. I would also have to accept a world with Alex Jones and his followers in it.

For example, Ron Paul is currently one of the biggest recipients of a grassroots movement. What do his supporters deliver to help his campaign (besides a lot of cash)? A blimp. It brings a smile to my face, but I don’t think it is something that Dr. Paul asked for. However, his anything goes libertarianism is a perfect match for the innovative supporters that took it upon themselves to help him get elected. At the rate that the Republican front-runners keep on self-destructing, I would say he has as good a chance as anyone at this point. (If Dr. Paul does get the Republican nomination, I can’t wait to see the Republican national convention.)

In short, democracy is not a way to obtain the result that one agrees with. So, if you have a poll to name a whale and are expecting some name that matches your sensibilities such as: Anahi, Kaimana, Shanti, Suzuki, Aurora or Humphrey. Don’t be surprised if the result turns out to be: Mr. Splashy Pants. Empowering certain people may be necessary to protect the system from abuse from illegitimate influence, however there is always a persistent internal danger that those who are empowered will also use their power illegitimately against members of the community. Therefore, the most dangerous person to empower is a utopianist or a fundamentalist. Such people are, by definition, incapable of seeing the downsides to their agenda, or properly understanding why people do not agree with their point of view.  Unfortunately, fundamentalism is far too easy a trap for anyone to fall into, and that is why it is important to have a blimp or a whale named Mr. Splashy Pants to remind us.
