Directamente das colinas no Sul de França, do Huge Studio, chega-nos neste final de 2009, o álbum de estreia do projecto/colectivo francês WebCam Hi-Fi, Livity is My Temple!

Formado em 1999 pelo músico/produtor Frédéric Luneau a.k.a. Fredread, WebCam Hi-Fi é um projecto na melhor tradição britânica dos soundsystems, complementando os lançamentos de estúdio com originais live acts, onde ao sound operator se juntam músicos e vocalistas!

Desde muito novo influenciado pelo trabalho dubwise de artistas como Aswad, Black Uhuru, Jah Shaka ou Twinkle Brothers, e fã de bandas míticas como The Clash ou Bad Brains!, Fredread sempre foi um activista da cena underground e da ideologia ‘Do It Yourself’.

Foi com naturalidade que este background o levou ao encontro da cena reggae/dub, criando a seu própria label, Tube Dub Sound Records, e estúdio de gravação, numa casa de madeira no topo de uma colina no Sul de França!

A Fredread juntam-se muitos outros activistas da cena Dub francesa, para dar forma á musica dos WebCam Hi-Fi: Xavier (bateria), Juan (Baixo), Fabio (trombone), Ras Martin (sax), Tooney Roots (Melodica, e frontman de outro conhecido projecto francês I-Plant) ou Sirhill (produtor/promotor na conhecida Control Tower Records).

Com lançamentos regulares desde 2004 em formato maxi 10 polegadas, os WebCam Hi-Fi já colaboraram nas suas produções com grandes nomes do reggae jamaicano como Earl Sixteen, Carlton Livingston, Tony Tuff, Ranking Joe; e do UK Roots como Kenny Knots, Madu, Tena Stelin, Humble I ou Jah Marnyah, entre muitos outros; sempre em produções inspiradas pelas origens do roots reggae, com toda a tradição do Heavy Dub bem presente!

Depois de inúmeras colaborações, e diversas tours europeia em formato soundsystem e live act, WebCam Hi-Fi apresenta agora o álbum de estreia, Livity is My Temple, com uma nova série de riddims de roots e heavy Dub pela mão de Fredread e da label Tube Dub Sound Records!

Com 8 novas composições, apresentadas ao longo de 15 temas, com uma serie de vozes convidadas, Livity is My Temple recupera também algo da tradição dos showcases, com muita versão dubwise a acompanhar os vocais, todos eles no seu estilo particular, a serem um dos grandes destaque deste álbum!

A veterania jamaicana é uma presença incontornável em Livity is My Temple, com 3 nomes do underground jamaicano: na malha de abertura Horace Martin, na única inspiração lovers rock presente, Treating mi so; Tony Roots na uplifting Happiness e nada mais nada menos que o original foundation raggamuffin Deejay, Joseph Cotton, numa potente Heavy Roots WebCam Hi-Fi production, Osmobill.

Da Costa do Marfim, surge um dos newcomers apresentados no álbum, Senykan, na malha Come On, seguido pelo inconfundível estilo do espanhol Roberto Sanchéz em Run From Dem.

Estreantes também com os WebCam Hi-Fi são as bonitas vozes da francesa Bethsabée em Same Felling, e da croata Vanya, no tema Friendship, o nosso destaque para riddim do álbum, ainda com a sempre fascinante participação de Madu Messenger na versão Grace of Jah e Grace of Dub!

Dan I, voz do conhecido projecto italiano Imperial Sound Army, o alemão Ras Seven (ambos num dos mais potentes steppers do álbum) e o britânico Zion I, presença habitual nas produções dos WebCam Hi-Fi, completam os convidados da versão CD de Livity is My Temple, que em breve apresentará mais versões na tradicional edição vinil!

A sonoridade Dub acompanha-nos ao longo de todo este novo lançamento, e como é habitual no som dos WebCam Hi-Fi as linhas de baixo pesadas estão em evidência. No entanto, em Livity is My Temple é de destacar o nível da produção levada a cabo por Fredread e Tooney Roots (masterização), e acima de tudo os excelentes arranjos de sopros que surgem em quase todos os riddims, num acompanhamento fenomenal quer às vozes quer à secção rítmica nos dub’s!

Vaya semanas que estamos viviendo últimamente, ritmo frenético, actividad desmesurada, pero no podíamos faltar a nuestra cita con la cultura soundsystem en Dub culture.

Ya estáis enteradxs, ritmos potentes destinados a resonar hasta reventar tus alatavoces.

Especialmente en este programa de más de 2 horas, sentimos a irregularidad en la duración del programa, con un sonido en algunos momentos un poco saturado, principalmente en frecuencias graves.

Como siempre tenemos nuestra primera parte de fundación del sonido soundsystem, con artistas de la talla de Steve Baswell, Ras Imru Asher, Bunny Wailer, Rod Taylor, Lacksley Castell o Sista Rasheda, con incapié en algunas producciones del sello de Horace Swaby Rockers. La segunda parte consta de la vertiente más actual acercandoos proyectos como el sonido de disciples, lo último de Dubkasm, Amp o Irie Action soundsystem desde Grecia.

Estrenamos la sección de revisiones de libros, cds, dvds con Vitol en el que nos acerca el DVD, Mussically Mad, dedicado como n o podía ser de otra manera al movimiento soundsystem.

I-man ha fe tell you about the reggae bus driver in my town Umeå (Umea, pronounced “umeyo”) in north Sweden. Omar Kulane, a man from Ehiopia, Eritrea or Somalia something who came to Umea as a refugee some years ago, learned Swedish and then got a job as local bus driver. He drives the night bus and takes safely many teenagers and youths smelling like real night owls home. In other night buses people often start to argue and fight, but never in Kulane’s bus. It’s the reggae on high volume the bus man plays which calm down everyone. Everybody became relaxed and happy when the reggae bus driver spreads this blessed music, and it’s really a “One Love”-atmosphere like in the Marley song. The reggae bus driver only plays soft roots which spread love, and other, funnier tunes. I actually heard Pluto Shervington’s “Ram Goat Liver”, a song which was like a national anthem in Jamaica around 1975 (a mini-bus which rams a goat and the hungry people on the bus, maybe ghetto dwellers, start a real barbecue party).

The reggae bus driver Omar Kulane actually has a fan club whith about 7,000 fans on Facebook and is showed at Youtube, but he didn’t know because he didn’t use Internet. This is a real phenomenon, a reggae phenomenon, which prove that this music comes from God.

The World of Reggae Music

The Ska Originals

The Jam-Tex selector presents a new chapter in the “Wolrd of Reggae Music Collection“ called The Ska Originals.

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music.  This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah” and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the early ska era. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The primary examination of the “Ska Originals” genre focuses on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s. Later posts will explore “Two-Tone Ska” and “Third Wave Ska” forms of ska music of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Some of the same Jamaican singers, musicians, and producers of the original ska music movement later became the fathers and mothers of rocksteady and reggae.  A young Robert Nesta Marley recorded some ska tunes and so did Bob Marley’s vocal group the Wailin’ Wailers, which later became the Wailers. Alton Ellis, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan, Clancy Eccles, and Lee “Scratch” Perry all played ska as young lads. These Jamaican superstars all make this collection of ska singles. So do the classic ska bands and vocal groups like The Skatalites, the Ethiopians, The Pioneers, the Soulettes, The Paragons, The Heptones, and the Versatiles. Many of the great ska musicians have singles that made this chart, like Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, and Tommy McCook.

Ska music is fun and fast, yet a very easy-going music that sends you skanking around the room. I love this music. There are some wonderful characters that came out of this musical genre, performers like Prince Buster, Sir Lord Comic, Lord Kitchener, Stranger Cole, Lord Creator, and the Folkes Brothers. Plus the dynamite sounds of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires make for some of the most classic ska tracks. The Jam-Tex selector invites you to comment on the list and make suggestions.

#348: Linton Kwesi Johnson – Story

This is a song about facades, the great Jamaican/British dub poet matter-of-factly chronicling their usefulness and how problematic they can be while his great band, and his violinist in particular, provide a haunting roots reggae backdrop. From the Tings and Times cd, 1991.

#347: The Avengers – The End of the World

When Penelope Houston first revived her legendary punk band, it was as the Scavengers (hopes of reuniting all four original members were still high at the time). This classic apocalypse anthem was first released – some 20 years after Houston wrote it – on the Avengers Died for Your Sins compilation, 1999. This week the Jam-Tex selector continues his exploration of the history of reggae music. The category “Reggae’s Superstars” has been divided into two volumes. The first volume included roots reggae masters from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. It was entitled “Reggae Superstar’s: The Lions of Jah” and can be found by clicking this link. This second volume entitled, “The Lion Youth,” focuses on the most current superstars of the Reggae movement (from the 1990s and 2000s). Many artists made the list, including roots reggae crooners like Tarrus Riley, Luciano, Gentleman, Alborosie, Etana, Jah Cure, and Daweh Congo. The selector invites others to join in on the organization of these tracks.  Thus Jam-Tex presents “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” This collection of singles begins with the greatest roots reggae hits in a category  entitled “Reggae’s Superstars – The Lions of Jah.”

The Reggae Superstars category includes the section: “The Lions of Jah.” The Lions of Jah section includes the pillars of reggae music, such as Bob Marley & the Wailers, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & the Maytals, Jacob Miller, Peter Tosh, Max Romeo, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Bunny Wailer, Desmond Dekker, Freddie McGregor, Horace Andy, Barrington Levy, Beres Hammond, and features supergroups like  Third World, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, and Culture. The grouping of songs includes classic vocal groups like the Mighty Diamonds, Wailing Souls, and the Itals, and early deejay and singjay sensations like Big Youth, Tenor Saw, and Half Pint.  Yet overall this category relies on the heavy hitters of reggae music like  John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Lucky Dube, Johnny Osbourne, and Cornell Campbell.

A frequently spellbinding show by two spiritually-inclined artists who don’t overstate their case. Brooklyn gospel veteran Naomi Shelton and her backing vocal trio the Gospel Queens – a recent addition to the Daptone roster – were backed by a capable four-piece band, their keyboardist sitting inscrutable behind his wraparound shades Brother Ray style. With her contralto rasp, Shelton doesn’t implore or go into a frenzy: she lets the songs speak for themselves. Likewise, the Gospel Queens – two of whom were given a turn on lead vocals and didn’t disappoint – keep the harmonies going without any ostentation. Their eleven-song set mixed scurrying vamps, warm Sam Cooke-inspired sixties-style gospel/soul and finally a funk number punctuated fluidly and soulfully by the bassist. But their best songs were ominously bluesy and minor-key: their opener, an understatedly dark version of Wade in the Water and their closing tune, the hauntingly memorable anthem What Have You Done.

Between sets, Burning Spear casually walked from the wings and addressed the crowd. Nobody seemed to notice or pay any mind: it looked as if he was presenting his guitar player with a ticket to the Grammies (Spear is a perennial nominee). Then the two went backstage again. But when the band took the stage, with a brief number sung by the rhythm guitarist and then a brief instrumental medley of hits, the crowd reaction was 180 degrees the opposite. This was a young massive, about 90% West Indian from the looks of it – awfully nice to see the youth of today in touch with the man who when all is said and done will probably rank as the greatest reggae artist of alltime. Jah Spear rewarded them with a characteristically intense, hypnotic show: now in his sixties, in his fourth decade of playing and recording, his warm, unaffected voice, casually magnetic stage presence and socially aware songwriting remain as strong as ever. Probably the most popular Jamaican artist throughout the decade of the 70s (Marley’s audience back home never matched his fan base in Babylon), Burning Spear’s songs typically build on long, trance-inducing vamps, in concert frequently going on for ten or fifteen minutes at a clip. Because this show had an early curfew, the band didn’t stretch out quite as long as they can, but it didn’t matter considering how strong the set list was – Spear has a vast back catalog, but this one was rich with gems from throughout his career. He opened with the sly boast Me Gi Dem, as in “Me gi dem what they want, yes me do.” The swaying 70s classic Old Marcus Garvey got a Tyrone Downie-style clavinet solo and then an incongruous metal solo (thankfully the only one of the night until the very end) from the lead guitarist. Slavery Days, from the classic Marcus Garvey album became an audience singalong, mostly just bass and drums behind the impassioned vocals. Burning Spear can be very funny despite himself: this time out, he was already asking the crowd, “Do you want more original reggae music?” three songs into the set.

They finally went into dub territory a bit on a long version of Jah No Dead, followed by a characteristically mesmerizing version of Driver (i.e. Jah is my driver; Jah is my rider also!). They closed the set with a soulful version of the backcountry anthem Man in the Hills, a tersely delicious take of the catchy Nyah Keith (best track on the classic 1980 Social Living album) and the only even relatively new song of the night, Jah Is Real (title track to last year’s excellent cd) which never really got off the ground as a singalong. But the first of the encores did: the scathing anthem Columbus, inarguably the most resonant deflation of the “Columbus discovered America” myth had the whole arena raising their voices to dismiss the “damn blasted liar” who happened upon Jamaica several millennia after the Arawaks did. After that, the catchy 70s hit The Sun couldn’t be anything but anticlimactic, but they ended the show on a high note with African Postman, Burning Spear relating the contents of a telegram with the message that “Now is the time that I and I and I should go home, yes Jah!” And with that the mellow posse of merrymakers departed, Jah Spear encouraging everyone to “watch your back on the way out, and on the way in.” If you weren’t there, you missed a real good one. Considering how vital he still is, it looks like he’s going to be around for a long time; watch this space for upcoming NYC dates.

Anguila expat Jahmings Maccow, formerly of New York roots legends Catch-A-Fire and the Enforcers, writes catchy, Bob Marley-influenced roots reggae songs that would have been right at home on Jamaican radio back in the late 70s. Fans of golden-era reggae singers like Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Clarke, Sugar Minott or Jacob Miller will love this album: if Rockers TV was still in syndication, you would no doubt see “The Rootsman”  interviewing Maccow with much enthusiasm. The production here is far more oldschool than most anything coming out of Jamaica right now, a fat riddim with real keyboards and layers of guitar. Maccow is not only a good songwriter, he’s also a good guitarist, spicing his songs with an incisive yet tersely soulful, pensive edge. The Marley inspiration extends especially to the vocals, Maccow reaching up to the high registers with the same kind of inspired half-yelp. The tunes mix slow anthems in with the upbeat, hitworthy stuff. In keeping with the classic roots vibe, the lyrics address both spiritual and contemporary issues, hence the album title, Man Redemption – a bunch of uplifting tunes that frequently address some pretty heavy issues.

The big, slow, soulful title track – a prayer of sorts – contrasts with the upbeat, obviously Marley-inspired Let Them Grow, like something off the Kaya album with tasteful acoustic guitar accents and a clever, distorted electric guitar solo low in the mix. Set Me Free is more upbeat, late period Marley-style songwriting with a nice, long, thoughtfully doubletracked guitar passage.

How Ya Gwaan Crucify is predictably a lot darker, with a Rastaman Vibration edge. The album’s fifth track, Free the Pain has a playful phased guitar solo – the tune reminds a bit of the late great Lucky Dube. After that, Put You Down/I Didn’t Come has more of a vintage 70s Manhattans/Stylistics style smooth R&B feel. The rest of the album includes the rather apprehensive Dread; Didn’t You Hear, which manages to be both pro-peace and a cautionary tale; the Israel Vibration-inflected See Them Fighting/Ghetto Walls; the gloriously bouncy Jah Jah Say, and the vivid yet understated Cry for Tomorrow. If you’re a fan of classic roots reggae, this is a welcome throwback to a time when artists basically had to at least pay lip service to spirituality and be conscious of the world around them even if they didn’t embrace it. It’s obvious that Maccow is sincere about what he has to say.
