Quentin Tarantino may be many things — perverted, profane, whipsmart, cocky, a little too enam

Quentin Tarantino may be many things — perverted, profane, whipsmart, cocky, a little too enamored with his own cleverness — but subtle he is not. He’s not even in the ballpark. Matter of fact, if that ballpark blew up, he wouldn’t hear the sound for another three days. Nah, Tarantino’s a guts-glory-chicks-and-explosions kind of director, and that imagination of his? In the name of Le Royale with Cheese does it dream up some wild-n-twisted trips.

Mark ”Pulp Fiction” down as one of the wildest. Every nanosecond of this humdinger’s 154 minutes contains something warped/crazy/effortlessly cool to behold: philosophical discussions about foot massages, the nature of miracles and a gold watche that has been places no watch should go; murders both coolly calculated and comically accidental; a frightful drug overdose; kinky sex (think S&M with an Alabama drawl and a gimp); and, last but not least, a sinfully delicious $5 milkshake. Random as this catalogue seems, Tarantino’s film is far more scattershot. The action doesn’t adhere to a simple timeline; instead, there are three stories that run parallel, then smash together, then diverge only to reconnect in ways that boggle the mind upon repeat viewings. “Pulp Fiction” is a genius noir/gangster combo that keeps us guessing. Guess long enough, though, and patterns start to emerge from the madness.

Sort of. Since Tarantino makes it nearly impossible to understand how these stories pool into a cohesive ending, let’s tackle one beast at a time. First, there’s “Vincent Vega and Marcellus Wallace’s Wife,” the tale of L.A. hitmen Vince (John Travolta) and Jules (a perfeclty cast Samuel L. Jackson) heading to do a job ordered by their loose-cannon boss Marsellus (Ving Rhames). Since Marsellus recently threw a guy out a high-rise window for giving his wife Mia (Uma Thurman) a foot massage, Vince has the jitters about taking her out on the town. His plan is simple: “Chew my food with my mouth closed, laugh at her fucking jokes, and that’s it.” Of course, trouble has a tendency to follow Vince, so things don’t go that smoothly.

Smoothness doesn’t much like Butch (Bruce Willis) either, which we discover in ”The Gold Watch.” A talented boxer with a sweetly innocent girlfriend (Maria de Medeiros), Butch shovels some dirt on his own grave by winning the fight Marsellus paid him to throw. But his neat double-cross turns messy through a series of freak coincidences, the most interesting involving two pawn shop owners who plumb forgot to pack their manners (not to mention their morality) when they left the Deep South. ”The Gold Watch” leads into “The Bonnie Situation,” a conclusion of sorts where Tarantino himself shows up as Jimmie Dimmick, a pal of Jules who begrudgingly agrees to help him clean up an accidental hit (“my gun went off! I don’t know why!” insists the a brain matter-spattered Vance) with help from Winston Wolf (Harvey Keitel). What’s on Wolfe’s business card we can’t be sure, since the terse mystery man only offers “I solve problems” as his job description.

It’s offhand comments like these that demonstrate one of Tarantino’s greatest strengths: revealing character traits with one or two stray lines of dialogue. He’s a student of human nature, and he knows the ways people fill time by arguing over whether foot massages are sensual or wondering what cheeseburgers are called in France (see above). And yet everything these characters say tells us something about themselves or the story. Christopher Walken, in his lone scene, delivers a howling-good speech that seems like comic relief, but the subject — the gold watch — comes back into play. Jules spouts a nonsensical version of Ezekiel 25:17, but it reveals his own moral code. Thurman, who finds jumpy loneliness in Mia, parlays a terrible joke about tomatoes into a real connection with Vince. Haphazard though they seem, these lines are the threads that knit everything together.

What else dazzles about “Pulp Fiction”? There’s the abundance of lurid violence — much of it comical (including an uncomfortably funny rape scene), some of it truly shocking, none of it gratuitious. Jackson and Travolta are one hell of two-man team, while Willis registers a pulse and Eric Stoltz has wit to burn. Ultimately, though, it’s the manic, fearless force of Tarantino that makes “Pulp Fiction” a sweet, sweet joyride, indeed.

David Bowie is a compulsive liar who gets a job as a bartender at some upscale hoity-toity restauran

David Bowie is a compulsive liar who gets a job as a bartender at some upscale hoity-toity restaurant, and ends up becoming involved in a staged robbery of the place.

that alone was enough to get me wanting this movie.

this little forgotten (it isnt even commercially available) gem tells a quaint, cute, and touching romantic tale. Bowie, a recent immigrant on the prowl for a ‘green chard marriage’ finds and even falls for Rosanna Arquette. the two of them, along with her friend (who has a huge crush on Bowie’s character) decide to rob the restaurant that she and Bowie work at. then things take a turn for the worst… a weird turn for the worst.

at first while i was watching this movie i was worried. the story was bland. it seemed like a million other romantic comedies and i was finding myself confused by why Bowie (especially in his mindset in 1991) would agree to such a… well… bland film. but then the movie throws the twist at you. i wont ruin the twist here, but i will say that it comes totally out of left field and is quite hilarious.

throughout the film i actually laughed out loud many times and smiled through most of the rest. the dialogue is just funny. the two girls have a wonderful and realistic chemistry and are very believable as quirky best friends, while Bowie plays his part better than the script could have even asked for. his charm and off the cuff wit seem to be more ad-lib than script. his chemistry with Rosanna is actually amazing. i found myself caring about the two… and i must say, i am NOT a romantic comedy fan.

in the years since the film has come out, the director has decided that it isnt what his vision was and has ended up somewhat disowning it. and that is a shame because this film is a charming film. the dialogue and the casting was just perfect. the story, for the hour or so before the twist, is bland and uninspired, but it almost didnt matter because of the other things going so right the whole time.

i recommend this movie. it can be found around the internet under a few different titles, including ‘The Robbery’ and the bizarre and questionable title, ‘Shag-o-rama’… there are a few copies left on amazon HERE, some info on it HERE, and a little more HERE.

Let’s get a little texty

‘After Hours’ was released in 1985, written by Joseph Minion and directed by Martin Scorsese. I remember seeing it maybe 10 years ago, and it featured Harvey Keitel back then, now it features Griffin Dunne! Seems I had ‘Mean streets’ mixed up with ‘After Hours’…

So, poor old Paul Hackett has a shitty job and thinks it’s temporary, lives alone and seems to be as lonely as can be. One night, he goes out to a cafe and reads a Henry Miller book, he meets a nice but obviously crazy woman named Marcy Franklin that’s perfectly played by Rosanna Arquette, end up getting her phone number and phones her asap…. Then his night turns into a nightmare, which is something you knew as soon as she came into the picture, the rhythm of the film speeds up: The bar tender is the first clue, he does strange dance moves, then when he goes to meet her afterwards, the taxi driver drives like a nut, and of course when he arrives she’s not there and it’s her sculptor friend that welcomes him with less than a smile, it smells like lofty coky arty Soho….You can feel the trap, you feel the poor regular man starting to lose it. She and him can’t communicate, he’s a nice guy in a regular life and she’s a mystery and will/wishes to remain so. He escapes the scene but his troubles are just starting, many insignificant but consequent things happen to him, like the metro fare has gone up overnight and he doesn’t have enough money to go home, the only guy who would help him can’t open his bar’s cash register to give him change and of course it’s raining like hell! From then it’s a series of situations where Paul goes deeper and deeper into the shitter, most of those situations would be banal if not funny, but they become surreal yet down to earth when you know what happened and start expecting what is about to. . . .

Even though you are sorry for the poor lad you can help but laugh, it’s going so far into the opposite of what he’s after, and when the end comes, you feel like screaming ‘I knew it’ and realise the genius of the writer and director! Then you go on the internet to check a couple of things and discover that the idea for the end was from the late Michael Powell who ‘was around quite a lot while the film was being made’, and how many times must we tell you that he was a great film maker, 1? 2? 3?

I’m prepared to scour the the Earth for that motherfucker. If Butch goes to Indochina, I want a nigger waiting in a bowl of rice ready to pop a cap in his ass.

–Marsellus

It has been fifteen years since the release of Pulp Fiction, which ushered Quentin Tarantino in the mainstream. The movie has been heavily quoted since its release. It did win for Best Original Screenplay. That’s says a lot. It was also nominated for seven Oscars. It’s currently #5 on the Top 250 of All Time on IMDb. It belongs there.

I owned the VHS of this movie and played it repeatedly. I could quote almost every line from the film. It sucked that my brother’s former girlfriend took the tape with her when they broke up.

It been awhile since I have seen this. After watching Inglourious Basterds, I wanted to see this movie again. I still enjoy the dialogue, the classic music and most of the performances. This fringe movie bent the rules of the Academy. It deserved a lot more acclaim.

If you don’t know the plot of the story – shame on you – revolves around multiple narrative that intercept and become jumbled up. It starts with a pair of robbers, Ringo and Yolanda (Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer) holding up a restaurant where two hit men who had a interesting day on the job, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield (John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson).

In his signature broken narrative, there is also stories about Vincent taking his boss’s wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) on a night on the town, dealing with a skuzzy drug dealer, (Eric Stolz). The boss, Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) dealing with an aging boxer, Butch (Bruce Willis) to throw a fight.

Tarantino is known for his long, drawn out dialogue scenes with some sprinklings of violence. One sequence still bothers me to this day. It’s the moment about the origin of “the gold watch”. It didn’t make any sense to me. Why was that in the movie? Why was that the motivation to Butch?

Judgment: If you haven’t seen this movie, return your movie snob card immediately.

Rating: ****1/2

E a trilha, embalada por “Into the Groove”, a-h-a-z-a!

David James Arquette (born September 8, 1971) is an American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, and former professional wrestler. He became known during the late 1990s, after having starred in several Hollywood films, including the films of the Scream trilogy. In addition to his acting career Arquette took a brief foray into professional wrestling in early 2000, competing for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and becoming a one-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion; a booking decision often cited as being pivotal to the degradation of the title and the downfall of WCW.

This is interesting for that fact that David was a former WCW talent, Billy was a loyal ECW supporter and Arnold had always been a WWF supporter. The WWF showed each one of them on screen.
After Hours seemed to start out a little bit slow for me, but I will admit, it was reeling me in for events about to happen. This film follows Paul Hackett, played by Griffin Dunne, through the events of an evening. Starting off trying to hook up with Marcy, played by Rosanna Arquette, Paul finally calls her and agrees to meet her at her friends house in Soho. Certain events happen (not giving too much away here…just check out the film) that evening and the only thing Paul wants to do is tell his story to the cops and go home. Anything that could happen to Paul, does happen. His world slowly crumbles and he seems to go to deeper darker places in the nightlife world of Soho. There are some great characters throughout the movie, Terri Garr (Tootsie) plays Julie the emotionally unstable waitress, Will Patton (Armageddon) plays a leather enthusiast and Catherine O’Hara (Best In Show) plays a plaster sculpture.

This film was directed by Martin Scorsese. After Hours is a very good dark comedy, something I wasn’t expecting from a director know for violence, having directed Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and more recently The Departed. The movie does seem dated in its style and music, but it still seems to work. Even though it seems a bit out of the norm for Scorsese, this is a very entertaining film. And if seems to start out slow for you, hang in there with it. This one is worth checking out when you in the mood for a black comedy.

Did you ever see that movie “Desperately Seeking Susan”? It has Madonna in it and Rosanna Arquette. The whole movie, Roseanna goes around desperately seeking this Susan character.

As a person who survivied incest and child sexual abuse, I continually seek safety in my life. I generally choose the safer of any options. I live my life safely. I hardly drink. I do not use non-prescription drugs and never have. I dated women, because I felt they were safer than men.

Did you ever hear that quote “Ships in the harbor are safe, but that’s not what ships are built for”? When I first read that quote, my immediate thought was “Yeah, but they’re safe. What could possibly be better than being safe?”

I wonder if, without the sexual abuse, I might have lived a different life. I wonder if I would have been pursuing my dream of singing onstage somewhere. I have always been a feminist. I wonder if I would have done something with that. I wonder if I would have had sex and enjoyed it before my husband, with other men?

I can’t even count the many ways in a day that I choose the safer option. Like locking myself in my room instead of being in the rest of the house, or even dare I say it, going outside for a walk. I can’t help but think about Warrior, who spends her life being courageous. I want to be like that, but safety always wins out. This is why you shouldn’t fuck kids.

Kino visiem seriāla “Lie to Me” cienītājiem – tieši šeit aktieris Tims Rots ieguva slavu kā visai progresīvs maindfakeris.

I don&t understand why we have adopted a Gnostic approach to the faith, where the brain is bad, but the spirit is sound. I thought when God saved a man, he saved Him intact – brain, reason, logical ability, the whole nine yards. …

Mow the lawn, fertilize, take care of the weeds, the whole nine yards. If they need a sprinkler system, we&ll put in an underground sprinkler system. In 1986, we started doing lawn care where we were spraying and doing insect control. …

Q: Your cryptic etymology of the “whole nine yards” traces it to the space program in the &60s, when it meant a detailed report. Such a report would have been on a folded stack of perforated printer paper – perhaps nine yards long. …
