Monday was a running around and errands day. We had many stops to make with exchanges and returns from Christmas. Here is a short list of places we visited today…

Again, that is the short list, there were several other quick stops that were made yesterday. In the haste of gathering all the things that needed to be exchanged I was able to make it out the door with a little bit of breakfast – I was armed with a tangerine, coffee and a list.

By the time lunch rolled around I was ravenous! So, Nick and I swung by a Subway in our escaped of exchanges. I ordered a six inch chicken breast on Italian bread, no cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, green pepper, banana peppers, olives, pickles, mustard, salt and pepper and light mayo. Great combo and it filled me to the brim.

Nick’s family invited us over for a Thai dinner smorgasbord. I sampled the chicken fried rice, curried fried rice and some of the broccoli from Nick’s Pad See Ew. I also brought along my marinated tofu to bake once I got to their house. A few days ago I mixed up a marinade for some extra firm tofu and had it sitting in the refrigerator for the past couple days.

I had never before marinated or baked tofu in my house before so I was hopeful that it was going to turn out good. Well the jury is in and the tofu was GREAT! The ingredients for the marinade included all things that I already had in my house and it was super easy to through together. The hardest and most important part of preparing the tofu was to let the brick sit and drain on paper towels before adding the cubed pieces of tofu to the marinade. If you are interested in trying a very flavorful and delicious tofu recipe, I recommend this one…

Marinated Baked Tofu

Ingredients

• 1 (16 ounce) package firm tofu or extra firm tofu, in water. I bought Whole Foods 365 brand.
• 3-4 tablespoons soy sauce
• 1-2 minced garlic cloves, to taste
• 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger, to taste
• 1 tablespoon sesame oil
• 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
• 1-2 teaspoon honey (optional) or sugar (optional)
• 1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions

1. Drain tofu and cut into 1″ cubes.
2. Mix all other ingredients together except olive oil.Pour marinade over tofu and cover.
3. Pour marinade over tofu and cover.
4. Refrigerate overnight or longer (I’ve left it for 4 nights).
5. Lightly grease baking pan or sheet with olive oil.
6. Arrange tofu in single layer on sheet, making sure not to forget the garlic and ginger from the marinade dish.
7. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes, flipping tofu at least once during the process, until brown and slightly crispy.

Nick went to D’Amatos Bakery in Chicago on Christmas Eve. He brought me back some great Italian cookies and tonight, I finally got to enjoy them. I also made myself a cup of black tea with a small squirt of agave.

Although there are two cookies pictured I ended up only eating the big guy on the left. I guess my eyes were too big for my stomach in the cookie department. So, I ended up sharing my other cookie with my cookie monster, Nick. Also picture in this photo is the new plates my mom gave to me. They are a GORGEOUS lime green with a black and white floral drawing. They are made by a woman named Rosanna of Rosanna Inc. My mom and I actually saw Rosanna speak at Country Livings Women Entrepreneurial program this summer. She is crazy smart and talented and I am happy to now have some of her table ware.

Happy first day of winter!  Today’s name is a hopeful choice for a child born in December.

Thanks to Photoquilty for (sort of) suggesting Luz as Name of the Day.

First things first – our dedicated reader actually suggested Luzanna, a name worn by a Friend of Photoquilty.  There are three equally possible origins for this appellation:

• It’s a smoosh of Luz and Anna.  A nearly unending list of names ends up combined with Anna – Anneliese, Annabel, Marianne, Rosanna, Carolanne, Georgeanna.  Luzanna works better than some on that list;
• It’s a respelling or riff on Louisiana, in which case it is more than a bit confusing.  Leelee Sobieski, I’m looking at you;
• Lastly, as with any truly unusual name, it’s always possible that I’m just plain missing the backstory.

A few dozen Luzannas pop up in US Census records.  Their surnames and places of birth and residence vary wildly, suggesting that Luzanna lacks any single, definitive origin.  I’ll offer a few more theories:

• Luzana is the Slovene name for the Swiss city of Lausanne, originally settled by the Romans as Lousonna;
• Handwritten census and immigration records can be difficult to decipher.  At least some suggest that Luzanna was actually Suzanna or another related name;
• Anna Luz is a compound name heard with some frequency amongst Spanish speakers, and often appears in conjunction with a Latino surname.

And so let’s turn our attention to Luz.

The simplest story is that luz is Spanish for light, from the Latin lux.

There’s a spiritual angle.  Another title for the Virgin Mary is Our Lady of the Light – Nuestra Señora de la Luz, María de Luz, or, in Cape Verde, Nossa Senhora da Luz.  Depending on where you’re standing, the pronunciation could be loos or looth.

You’ll also find Luz in the Bible:

• It’s either an alternate name for Bethel or a neighboring town mentioned in Genesis;
• In Judges, Luz is the name of another town.  Scholars suggest that it may be in the Golan Heights.

Some connect luz to an Aramaic word for almond.  Aramaic predates Latin by centuries.  It’s the original language of several books of the Old Testament, may have been the language spoken by Jesus and a version referred to as Imperial Aramaic was used to govern the Persian Empire.

She’s occasionally a surname, and not as rare in the first spot as you might think.  Luz has charted in the US Top 1000 every year since 1950.  Her best showing was #455 in 1972.  Last year, more than 400 baby girls born in the US were given the name.  That works out to #732, just one spot behind the equally spiritual Milagros.

If Luz has a shortcoming, it’s sharing a sound with the potentially perjorative loose.  (Break out your copy of 1986’s Beastie Boys debut Licensed to Ill and listen to “She’s Crafty.”  I think her name was Lucy, but the all called her …)

Which takes us back to Luzanna, Luz Anna and Anna Luz.  It’s a lovely name, but perhaps better paired with another – if only for the teenage years.

Decima canzone nel programma pomeridiano di oggi, 27 Ottobre. Il prossimo gruppo è così famoso che non ha bisogno di introduzioni, cosa che comunque farò lo stesso. E’ un gruppo formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1976. Sto parlando dei fantastici, mitici Toto con  Rosanna!

Und noch einmal: Wow, was für ein Auftritt! Was für eine Show! Und was für eine unglaublich arbeitsintensive Auftrittsvorbereitung!

Daher müssen wir uns zuerst mal bei allen Leuten bedanken, die irgendwie zum reibungslosen Ablauf des gestrigen Abends beigetragen haben. Ich will hier keine Namen aufzählen, aber hiermit geht ein dickes DANKE an alle raus, die sich angesprochen fühlen. Dazu gehören u. a. alle Gastsänger, alle Leute hinter der Theke, alle Film- und Fotokameramänner, alle Licht- und Technik-Menschen, der “Ich mach immer den Vorhang auf und zu”-Mann und vor allen Dingen der Typ, der sich das Bühnenbild ausgedacht hat. Denn das war einfach unglaublich.

Für alle diejenigen, die nicht anwesend waren: Ihr habt was verpasst. Hier einige Highlights von gestern:

• Die Bühne. Oh ja, die Bühne. Speziell angefertigte Traversen, eine Armee von Moving Heads, Live-Übertragung auf eine Leinwand während des Auftritts und gerade erst aufgenommene Fotos während der Pausen. So viel Technik hat die Aula des St. Wolfhelm Gymnasiums sicher noch nicht gesehen.
• Dieter als Gastmusiker am Klavier bei Rosanna und You can leave your hat on. Unglaublich, der Mann.
• Tobi packt noch einmal die Perücke bei Highway to hell aus und wir rocken mit neuen Luftgitarren.
• Ein Unentschieden beim Gesangswettbewerb “Männer gegen Frauen” bei Ein Kompliment. Wer hätte gedacht, dass sowas mal vorkommt.
• Tobi zeigt bei The Best auch seine Qualitäten am aufblasbaren Saxophon. Versucht mal einen vielseitigeren Musiker zu finden. Ich kenne keinen.
• Viva la vida mit dem gefühlten kompletten Publikum auf der Bühne als Hintergrundchor.
• Die Auftritte der Gastsänger. Immer wieder das Salz in der Suppe. Jule brachte die Menge schon im ersten Set zum Grooven, Sylvia ließ die ersten Feuerzeuge auftauchen und Jennifer rockte mit uns ab. Timo & Olivia brachten zweistimmige Romantik in die Aula, bevor Golo die Frauenherzen für sich gewann und Jan den perfekten Deutschrocker verkörperte. Respekt!

Und an dieser Stelle könnt ihr auch abstimmen, welche/r Gastsänger/in den besten Auftritt hingelegt hat. Zu gewinnen gibt es für denjenigen mit den meisten Stimmen… äh… Ruhm und Ehre. Und den Titel “School of Rock-Rocker”. Also stimmt ab!

I’m currently in Louisville, working on “Bellarmine Radio: Year Zero.” This is a complete and total relaunch of our station and music library. So on one of my low key evenings came across this episode of Family Guy. While I’m hardly the biggest fan of the show, I greatly appreciated the clip. Especially the latter 30 seconds.

You mean you didn’t like “Hold the Line”?

This song is about actress Rosanna Arquette. She was dating Toto keyboard player Steve Porcaro at the time, but Porcaro didn’t write it. It was written by Toto leader David Paich. He decided to write it about Arquette when he saw how supportive she was of Porcaro. Arquette often came by the studio and brought the band food.

Arquette liked this at the time, but since breaking up with Porcaro, she can’t stand it.

Porcaro is not the only musician Arquette has dated.

Her credibility rose somewhat when she lived in England for a few years with Peter Gabriel. She also dated The Blue Nile’s Paul Buchanan for some time.

However this all leads me on to one of the most amazing Youtube clips you’ll see (hear). This is Slovenian choir Perpetuum Jazzile performing an acapella version of Toto’s Africa. The introduction is incredible.

When I was little, I used to pour over my Dad’s records, which were mostly divided into two camps: Beatles and Rolling Stones. I loved the colorful Beatles record jackets, especially Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers. The Stones records intrigued me; I knew the zipper on Sticky Fingers records was something I wasn’t supposed to touch, but I wasn’t sure why. Between Bowie, Queen, some K Tel classics and my Star Wars records, these were in heavy rotation.

Curiously there was a third pile, which I didn’t quite get. The Doobie Brothers, Loggins and Messina and their ilk, with their long hair, Hawaiian shirts, and high-pitched harmonies, annoyed my post-toddler glam rock sensibilities and thus, those records remained on the shelf.  I guess between Chewbacca and Ch-Ch-Changes, I didn’t have time for the pastel suited dudes who looked like guest stars on a fey version of Miami Vice. But with my up bringing, you’d think I would have…

I grew up summering on Cape Cod, where the adults wore coral necklaces and collars up at clambakes and spoke about the Vineyard (Martha’s) and Vicodin. I was basically bred as the preppy spawn of Yacht Rock, yet it repelled me. Like hair metal, I looked down on it until later on in life, when I could appreciate both the kitsch value and sonic delight. I can now fully appreciate those deliciously smooth sounds.

Cut to the new millennium and mid-naughts. A resurgence in sampling, especially the ever-popular Michael Jackson, has led to a lot of smooth music being used in contemporary tracks. The YouTube comedy series “Yacht Rock” becomes a massive cult hit. Popular electro dance band, Chromeo, appear, un-ironically, on Daryl Hall’s internet program ‘Live From Daryl’s House‘.  Yacht Rock’s captain, Michael McDonald, recurs as a running punch line over several seasons of 30 Rock and then makes an appearance singing on their finale episode. Andy Samberg raps about the pleasures of being on the great big watery road with a nautical themed pashmina afghan.  As the Marina music clans begin putting together reunion tours and retrospectives, yacht rock parties start popping up around Hollywood. It’s a ‘Wassup Yacht Rockers!’ world. Everyone seems to want to rock out on the open sea.

Enter the Knights Of Monte Carlo. They play hard-core soft rock and ‘put the ass back in class and the hard on in chardonnay’.  The Knights of Monte Carlo are distinctly rich, gorgeously handsome, flawlessly refined sextet dedicated to resurrecting the best music ever to have hit the airwaves– 70’s soft rock. Because of their incredible talent and unparalleled style they frequently attract chic and pulchritudinous admirers from around the world, making Knights of Monte Carlo the most popular and internationally sought after soft rock tribute ensemble of all time…this is all self-professed.

I regale a friend about this group and convince her to dress in tropical splendor and accompany me for this three-hour tour. We decide that we need a yacht club persona. My friend chooses the soccer mom sensitive Cheryl Connerson, while I choose Debbie Finkelstein. Half way to the show, I decide to change the name to St Germaine, knowing a Finkelstein can sometimes have issues with the advisory board at a yacht club.

At the Key Club, a nautical flag sign denoted a VIP Entrance (actually the elevator), which whisked us aboard a room decorated with a Tequila Sunrise backdrop, and life preservers. Men in white linen suits and mirrored sunglasses beckoned us to come aboard for some pina colada and wine spritzer specials. For those not into health food, but into champagne, Knights Of Monte Carlo bass player, Brad Bayliner, held court at his International Cheese and Cracker Tasting – complete with gouda, Carrs, grapes and a Wall Street Journal. Yuppies Ahoy!

With tongue firmly planted in cheeks, the sextet took the stage and posed, postured, and karate kicked and flexed their way through a set including Doobies, Ambrosia, Loggins, Cross, Air Supply, America and Chicago. Can you Dig it? Yes, I can.  But wait, there’s more in this K Tel show. Toto? Yes, Toto too. Was the set missing some McDonald? That’s what a fool believes – he was aptly represented. A show sans Hall and Oates? No can do. The Knights can’t go for that, and neither should you.

The Knights were totally smooth, save for a few Rolexes and rope bracelet in danger of getting in the way of their fret work. Hey, that’s what a little Riuniti on ice will do to a guy. While Doc Spyders crooned the Escape song and shook his ass, Montague, dressed like a judo master, gave a shiatsu massage to the congos, elbows and all. During the drum break, Doc did yoga poses as Brad lit up a tobacco pipe.

Next the Knights sequed into some Fleetwood Mac, a rousing rendition of Go Your Own Way which would have made Lindsay and Stevie at the Staples center across town, very proud. There were hits for the ladies too. Somebody’s Baby, Summer Breeze, Easy Like Sunday Morning, Ride Like The Wind and Africa, made the ladies sway like they were finding their sea legs at high tide. Knights drummer, Bobby Colada, even dedicated a song to Debbie St. Germaine (nee Finkelstein) noting how hard it can be to get into the yacht club with their (ahem) restrictions. Then the band launched into Rosanna. Meet you all the way, indeed.

Rounding out the night with some Robbie Dupree and Gerry Rafferty, KOMC’s Rico Morgan, was a master on the Korg keys and saxophone. Nelson Borealis wandered out onto the deck amongst the passengers for some smooth electric guitar. Brad gave a cheese update. Doc pulled up his white socks from his deck shoes and leapt over the mic stand; a finale of their white man choreography. I haven’t danced, or laughed, that hard in a while.

The normally staid preppy crowd whistled and yelled for more as if we were watching Bon Jovi in ‘88. But the Knights had such a long way to go to make it to the border of Mexico. So they bid us all a bon voyage and asked us to come get smooth next Thursday for the continuation of their residency. It’d take a lot to drag me away from them.

Rosanna, Toto (1982)

Do I really need a reason to post this classic Yacht Rock anthem from 1982? The multiple key changes and the overwrought synth solo never ceases to transport me to heaven. I also love the ubiquity of chain link fences and graffiti backdrops in early 80s vids.

La primera vez que vi un cuadro de Iman Maleki no podía creer que era una pintura, la riqueza de detalles de su obra hace pensar inevitablemente en un primer momento que lo que tenemos ante nuestros ojos es una fotografía hecha con una cámara de alta definición.

Iman Maleki es un pintor iraní del hiperrealismo, que ha ganado varios premios artísticos merecidamente, pues además de tener un excelente dominio de la técnica su obra también consigue reflejar  la realidad social en Irán y las duras condiciones en las que la mayor parte de los iraníes se ven inmersos.

La dama desencarnada es uno de los casos que el neurólogo Oliver Sacks describe en su libro El hombre que confundió a su mujer con un sombrero.

La protagonista del relato es una mujer que, repentinamente  y sin motivos aparentes, se dio cuenta de que no era capaz de controlar su propio cuerpo, hasta el punto de que ni siquiera podía mantenerse en pie. El desconcierto invadía a  los médicos que la trataban, puesto que posiblemente fue el primer caso patológico de estas características, y tras varias pruebas llegaron a la conclusión de que la paciente había tenido una lesión neurológica cuya principal consecuencia fue la pérdida del sentido de la propiocepción.

La propiocepción, dicho de manera muy simplificada, es el sentido interno que nos permite ser conscientes de nuestro propio cuerpo. Imaginemos por un momento que nos ocurre lo que le ocurrió a Christina y dejamos de sentir nuestro cuerpo. El movimiento no está alterado, podemos movernos, pero no sabremos si nuestras manos están quietas o en movimiento, o dónde tenemos las piernas, por lo que la caída será inminente.

Así se sentía esta joven, incapaz de realizar ningún movimiento conscientemente. No obstante, con el tiempo logró sustituir parcialmente el sentido de la propiocepción con el sentido de la vista, aunque ello la obligaba a realizar movimientos rígidos y estudiados, muy artificiales al carecer de espontaneidad. Si en algún momento dejaba de estar pendiente de su posición, podía perder el equilibrio. Se sentía, como ella mismo dijo, desencarnada.

Aunque la paciente logró encontrar una solución medianamente satisfactoria “controlando” permantemente su cuerpo, es evidente que tras ese episodio su vida cambió radicalmente y hubo de adaptarse a condiciones hasta el momento impensables.

El autor añade una nota al finalizar el capítulo, informando de que esos mismos síntomas se han manifestado en otras personas posteriormente.

Tras leer este capítulo reflexioné acerca del impacto emocional que supondría un cambio así para cualquier persona encontrarse ante esa situación irreversible. Si ya la personas que carecen de alguno de los cinco sentidos conocidos comunmente ya encuentran dificultades para adaptarse  a una sociedad que es consciente de su problema, aceptándolo y teniendo en cuenta sus posibles limitaciones, ¿Cómo podrá adaptarse un persona que carece de un sentido interno que la mayoría de la gente desconoce, del que la sociedad no es ni siquiera consciente y por tanto no concibe el hecho de que pueda desaparecer?

Llega el buen tiempo y con él, como cada año, un aumento desmesurado de la publicidad relativa a productos para mejorar nuestro aspecto, mayoritariamente el de las mujeres.

Televisión, revistas, internet, cualquier lugar es bueno para anunciar cremas autobronceadoras, anticelulíticas, reductoras, reafirmantes…, y todas son capaces teóricamente de obrar milagros, y hablo de teoría porque lo cierto es que desconozco los efectos reales de dichos productos. Mi objetivo no es denunciar su ineficacia, o en caso de ser eficaz, su desproporcionalidad con el precio del producto, sino que mi crítica va dirigida hacia los cánones de belleza establecidos en nuestra sociedad.

Por todas partes nos llegan mensajes, la mayor parte de ellos subliminales, de la importancia de ser una persona físicamente agraciada, sin que seamos conscientes de que la belleza ideal que programas como Photoshop son capaces de aportar sólo existen sobre papel o a través de una pantalla.

Por el contrario, el conocimiento queda relegado a un segundo plano, potenciándose incluso la ignorancia en algunos casos. Si alguien nos dijera que este mes debe leer cinco o seis libros para aumentar su nivel cultural lo consideraríamos más extraño que si nos dijera que tiene que comprarse cinco cremas distintas para mejorar su aspecto, la realidad es así de triste.

Probablemente en el sentido inicial de la cita latina “mens sana in corpore sano” la mente tendría tanta importancia como el cuerpo, aunque quizá la mente tuviera más y la cita fuera para recordar los beneficios de cuidarse físicamente. Actualmente cuando se cita adquiere mucha más importancia el cuidado físico que el hecho de conseguir un equilibrio.

Supongo que los motivos serán diversos, pero debe ejercer una enorme influencia el ámbito económico: es más rentable para las grandes marcas que intentemos luchar contra el tiempo y destinemos una cantidad fija de nuestros ingresos a intentar estar bellos y a mantener esa belleza aparente, en lugar de seguir un camino diferente del establecido por los medios de comunicación y cultivarnos intelectualmente, pues esto último podría llevarnos a cuestionar los cánones anteriormente mencionados que lucran a tanta gente.

No nos engañemos, el ideal de belleza no es más que un negocio muy rentable.

La posición original es una situación hipotética ideada por el filósofo John Rawls, en la cual un determinado grupo de individuos establecería una serie de normas para aplicarlas a una sociedad futura de la que ellos formarán parte, con la pretensión de que dicha sociedad sea completamente justa y democrática.

Para que los principios de justicia se cumplan deben haber una serie de condiciones que garanticen el correcto funcionamiento de la sociedad imaginada. Entre las condiciones destaca sobre todo la denominada el velo de la ignorancia, en la cual reside en gran parte la importancia del concepto debido a su originalidad y acierto, desde mi punto de vista.

El velo de la ignorancia consiste en que los individuos que decidirán cómo será la sociedad justa y democrática son absolutamente desconocedores de qué posición tendrán en ella. Ignorarán su raza, procedencia, nivel económico, creencias, etc., con el objetivo de que los individuos creen la sociedad justa e igualitaria que se pretende al tener el riesgo de, en caso de crear una sociedad contraria a lo pretendido, tener una posición desfavorecida respecto de otros individuos.

Probablemente, esta idea daría resultado si se pudiera llevar a la práctica y por fin se crearía una sociedad realmente justa, pero lo cierto es que nunca dejará de ser tan solo eso, una idea bonita y agradable, al menos en apariencia.
