The second kitty is Rosco. He’s about 8 and a half months now, with an estimated birthday of March 30, 2009. He still hasn’t figured out how to meow, but he has no problem with purring! And because he’s still so young, he can be a real handful!

Captain’s Log: Stardate one zero dash five.

We’ve spotted a large furry galactic body of unknown origin. Dropping to altitude one dash niner for a closer look.

Closer inspection reveals black and white marl, likely of canine origin. Strong odor unidentifiable upon initial contact. Further study suggests rodentia provenance, likely deceased. Very deceased.

Inspection suggests canid is not presently a candidate for cuddling, due to strong olfactory signature.

En sólo cinco días de programa Antonio García se ha llevado el bote más cuantioso de ‘Pasapalabra‘: nada más y nada menos que 450.000 euros, una cifra superior a la que se llevo nuestro grandísimo José Manuel Lúcia (398.000 euros). Let’s take a wide look around the Internet today for some good advice…

§ I’ve been enjoying the work lately of a number of new-to-me photographers I’ve recently discovered. Darwin Wiggett hails from well north of Central Illinois but his vision and creative well, as a photographer and one who writes about photography, is impressive. Plus he knows how to get a laugh out of a dog – always important. He also recently wrote a nice little article that would do well here – an essay on How to Really Saturate Your Fall Colors in Camera – with one easy step. It’s a technique that another well-known local shooter known for his blue skies really likes to use. Check that out.

§ Proving that visits to the Peoria Camera Club are always worthy, last week’s speaker, Hank Erdman, pointed all of us to two other spectacular shooters – both of whom relish the art in photography. David Ward is a large-format photographer who specializes in the landscapes of England. His two books, Landscape Within, and the follow-up, Landscape Beyond, could be considered very important works in terms of connecting landscape photography with both art and vision. He also chunks out nice bits of wisdom on his blog.

§ A Canadian, Freeman Patterson is another stunning intellectual photographer who connects landscapes with art and vision. His fantastic tome, Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image, is another book that has inspired many who’ve gone before.

§ And while Galen Rowell is far from new to me, it somehow slipped my aging brain when it came to putting a link to the late photographer’s web site  in my blog roll. Problem resolved – and if you get a chance, check out of of the most gifted visionaries of all time (with camera in hand).

§ The folks over at Photojojo put together a nice step-by-step article on using the Brenizer method to stitching a thinner depth-of-field.

§ This showed up on David Hobby’s website the other day, but here’s a link for you guys who are into small strobe lighting and love to use just the right gels on you flashes. Rosco has come through nicely with this very appropriate and very affordable gel kit. Links to resellers are right on the page too.

§ And I leave you today with this wonderfully inspriational TED talk from Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love. It’s all about creativity and can easily be applied to the photographic process. A fascinating perspective.

I went to an SMPTE conference in my final year at Conestoga College and met Adrian Goldberg who was giving a lighting demonstration. I got his card and hounded him until he put me in touch with a company called Electric Images. My first job was with them as head of their lighting department even though I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. I worked with a bunch of different lighting directors; Tom Swartz, Adrian Goldberg, Frank Merino and Ken Sala as their lighting assists.

My first big colour lighting show was a kids’ program with Tom Swartz. I remember he would send us up between the shows to change the gels and gobos to get different looks with the same lighting. This was all before moving lights. When Electric Images went out of business I started doing individual projects, a day here a day there, and it slowly blossomed. Then suddenly I got my own show and it went from there.

I always carry my “Rosco Kit”, as I call it. I have over 800 Rosco Gobos and at least 500 sheets of Rosco gel colours. I have a package truck as well with two rolls of pretty much everything from colour correction, diffusions, and reflectors to ND’s. I’m definitely a heavy Rosco user. I own about 12 Rosco Gobo Rotators and use them regularly as well as the Image Pro projectors.

I find having my “Rosco Kit” with me helps when deciding the colour scheme for shows. I do a Franklin Templeton show for Business News Network and have three Franklin Templeton people sitting with me going through combinations of colour for their Fund Group. Having the kit with all the colours right there in large pieces makes it easier to decide with them which ones work best.

I use gobos a lot in my lighting, but rarely in focus unless it’s a logo. For Franklin Templeton I use three different gobos to light the sign with his head on it. This combination of a different gobo for three lights on one sign gives me a great breakup of light and effect. I use gobos as my paints! I heard there’s going to be a new iPhone app that will have the Rosco Gobo catalogue on it which is great; I can carry it around and do quick searches for the type of gobo I’m looking for. In my kit I usually carry a minimum of 8 copies of each gobo and as many as 20 of the standard/popular ones. Gobos are definitely a palatte I like to work with.

In 2002-2003 I designed the world exclusive Lord of the Rings exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, which broke attendance records at the ROM. We used over a dozen Rosco double gobo rotators in the forest set along with Rosco’s Delta 3000 smoke machines to recreate the Fangorn forest scene. In another recreation of the dead marshes set, we used eight Rosco Image Pro’s with custom made water gobos to help set the mood. In all we used over 140 Rosco gobos, 20 Rosco double gobo rotators, 12 Rosco Image Pros, and three Delta 3000 smoke machines.

I did The Score studio installation in 2008 from the ground up. It was my first opportunity to specify RoscoView for windows. We had windows approximately 50 feet wide by 12 feet high to cover. I wasn’t aware of RoscoView when we first started the project and I was at odds as to what to do with these windows. They were in a concave arrangement and I didn’t want to deal with rollers in that situation. It was a “eureka” moment when I heard about RoscoView. We did a test with The Scores’ Creative Director Sam Nasrawi and it did everything it was supposed to do. Sam gave the go ahead. We had a learning curve with the installation, but now it’s in and everything is working well. They love it.

In 2008 I was also doing the installations for Global Studios’ new newsrooms and the new Global National set, as well. Each of those would be outfitted with a full Rosco Kit of diffusions, ND’s, Cinefoil and anything else I felt they needed.

I have been a Rosco user from day one. I like the fact that I can have a Rosco rep come out and show me things when it’s convenient for me. That Rosco has a face to go with the name is important. I was shown the “wet test” between Rosco 3026 Tough White Diffusion and LEE 216 which shows that when exposed to water the LEE 216 diffusion became translucent, the Tough White didn’t. I work outdoors a lot and maintaining the integrity of your diffusion in all kinds of weather, particularly with large sources, is important.

I own much of my own gear but deal with Angelo Colussi at P.S. Production Services for generators and any extra film gear I need, David James at PRG for extra rock n’ roll moving head gear and also Louise Nardella at the Source Shop for a variety of things. What they bring to the table is “my emergency is their emergency”, which is great! I remember one time my light meter battery died and Louise jumped in a cab and brought me a replacement battery because I was in such a panic. It’s customer service like that I give to my clients. I don’t expect it, but I sure do appreciate it when I get it.

Bon. Il est grand temps de se reprendre en main, tout part en n’importe quoi par ici, c’est complètement laissé à l’abandon. Plus rien d’ici ne me plait, alors j’efface tout et je repars de zéro.

Reprenons les bases, repartons sur ce qui marche (ou non), le racontage de vie. 3615 MA VIE. T’es bien assis ? Je commence.

Les partiels sont finis, le semestre est sauvé, de haute lutte je dois dire, j’ai réussi à assurer un C en PS22 avec 6 médian steuplé, un E en CM11 avec 5 au médian (hein !), et aussi un E en MT22 avec une moyenne de 4 aux deux partiels, et un final fait à peine au quart. Je sais toujours pas où ils ont pu me trouver des points, c’est mystérieux, appelons Scoubidou pour résoudre le mystère, on n’est plus à une folie près. Voilà pour les partiels, je passe en TC03, même si j’ai que une Culture Gé de validée (pas glop).

Ensuite, c’est les vacances. Oui, même les étudiants ingénieurs connaissent ce mot, surtout les UTCéens. Alors je suis en Bretagne à monter à cheval au Reden tous les jours, à commencer par Inouïe le lundi (Le lundi, c’est Inouïe ! Reprise de La Vie est un long Fleuve tranquille) et à enchainer entre Loden et Rosco le reste de la semaine. Ce Rosco d’ailleurs, il me fait redécouvrir les sensations équestres. C’est presque un deuxième Jaliste, sauf que lui est bien plus jeune, et si il fait mal, c’est juste qu’il sait pas faire encore. Oui, je suis trop gentil, presque gâteux, mais ça m’avait manqué, cette espèce de sentiment à sens plutôt unique. Je retrouve tous mes problèmes d’incurvation, de galop à tenir et de cheval à soutenir ; bref tout ce qui est compliqué mais que j’aime tant.  J’aime beaucoup ce poney, il va me manquer. Et mes chevilles sont en train de décéder sous mes yeux aussi. RIP mes chevilles, presque 18 ans sur Terre.

Je continuerai tout ça parce que je pars samedi pour Trébeurden, et si Pleuven c’est paumé, Tréberden n’existe même pas sur la carte. Donc j’aurais pas mal de temps à tuer, et la blogosphère est là pour ça. Attendez vous à avoir de mes nouvelles.

I wasn’t surprised to see this poll pointing to the public wanting the railways to be renationalised, indeed when I defend a private railway system I have people screaming at me that the companies can’t run the system, and overcharge customers.

Want to know why your tickets cost a fair whack? It’s because train companies have to lease trains from ROSCOs – companies that “own” the rolling stock – all three of them.

It was a botched privatisation that hasn’t been sorted.

The figures for 1996-2002 read as £2billion that should have gone into investing in new rolling stock going straight into the pockets of shareholders. Profit margins regularly above 30%? Three major players in the market with huge barriers to entry? Sounds like market failure to me.

Who caused this to happen though? The Government. Due to their regulation they forced companies such as GNER to hire their carriages from ROSCO’s therefore forcing the company to hike their prices up to the consumer.

Not to point fingers at who started this off, and who didn’t sort it out, we had the chance now to review the railway lines and create an efficient system which would provide a competitive price to it’s customers. Instead we see a populist return to nationalisation, another burden on the public finances, and one can hope we never return to the days of British rail.

This is a great little reference chart showing Gel comparisons from various brands. A must for any DOP who needs exact or near exact matches of Gel colors.

En Pasapalabra ha batido ya el récord de permanencia, el bote en el “rosco” es el máximo, siempre se queda a una o dos palabras de llevárselo. Y resulta que hoy descubro que José Manuel Lucia vive en Alcalá. Aunque nació en Cangas del Narcea, llegó a la ciudad complutense para formar parte de la Bripac como paracaidista que es. Y aquí vive desde 1992, como nos descubre Diario de Alcalá.

Sigue batiendo récords, aunque parece que en breve dejaremos de verlo en la pantalla tras llevarse el superbote.

Nieuwe videoclip van Zo Moeilijk is een solotrack van Rosco gewoorden. Track heet Naomi,stiekem hoopte ik dat er een dubbele clip zou komen waarin Naomi en Croy elkaar zouden doorkruisen. Maar voor nu geniet ik van deze clip.

Se utiliza un rosco (de gas butano) y un perol (parecido a una paellera pero más profundo).

Ingredientes para cuatro personas:

Dos tomates maduros medianos, un pimiento rojo más bien pequeño, un pimiento verde grandecito, cuatro o cinco dientes de ajo, arroz bomba (dos puñados por persona), un pollo no muy grande, un vaso de vino fino, una lata de champiñones, una lata de pimientos morrones, sal, azafrán, pimentón dulce, pimienta, agua, colorante.

Elaboración:

Se limpia y se trocea el pollo y se echa aceite en el perol para cubrir el fondo (el justo). Una que vez está caliente el aceite, se añade el pollo y se rehoga hasta que coja color por todos los lados, entonces se saca y se reserva.

En el mismo aceite se echa el pimiento rojo bien picado, se deja un par de minutos y se le añade el pimiento verde picado. Otro par de minutos y se agrega el ajo también picado. Se rehoga un rato con el fuego más bien flojo, para que no se queme el ajo. Se echa el tomate picado y se deja sofreír.

Cuando se vea que el tomate está más bien desecho (no del todo), se añaden los champiñones (se les quita el caldo y si son grandecitos se parten), se remueve un ratito. Se incorpora de nuevo el pollo y se mueve otro rato.

Se agrega la sal, la pimienta, el azafrán y una cucharada de pimentón dulce, se remueve un minuto (cuidado que no se queme el pimentón) y se añade el vaso de vino y agua hasta que cubra. Se sube el fuego hasta que hierva y, cuando esto ocurra, se baja lo justo para mantener un hervor ligero.

Una vez se ha consumido el agua (si el pollo sigue duro se va añadiendo más agua), se echa el arroz y se rehoga un rato. Luego se añade agua, dos partes y media de agua por cada parte de arroz, el colorante, se sube el fuego hasta que hierva y, una vez se consigue, se baja para dejar un ligero hervor. De vez en cuando se puede mover para lograr que el arroz se haga por igual, pero muy suavemente.

Una vez se ha consumido parte del caldo, se trocea en tiras el pimiento morrón, se agrega (el caldo del pimiento también) y se rectifica de sal. El arroz está hecho cuando desaparece el punto blanco de su centro y se queda transparente. Se deja reposar unos minutos y se sirve.

En Córdoba existe la costumbre de comer directamente del perol, pero eso queda a los escrúpulos de cada cual.

Un truco: si se ha rehogado al principio el hígado del pollo, se separa del resto y se machaca en un mortero con una poca sal, perejil y vinagre. La mezcla se extiende sobre el arroz una vez esté finalizado.

New York City traffic is unreal from 5 to 7 on a Friday night. We’ve been at a slow crawl for almost an hour now. Good thing we have movies to watch. At Jeff’s request (captain’s privilege) we watched Welcome Home, Rosco Jenkins starring Martin Lawrence [Truth Forum 4/10]. Everyone slept. Now we are watching Traitor starring Don Cheadle, great flick [Truth Forum 8/10]. I’ve forgotten my IPod for the first time since I started travelling and I realize that without it, I actually have time to sit back and relax. Just me and my thoughts.

At the beginning of practice today, Coach gathered us around and talked with us (as he usually does), and addressed adversity. Usually, he’s pretty lighthearted telling us the what’s what of how practice is going to go and things to key in on. Today, however, he was very grim. What is said exactly is for the teams’ ears only, but I will say that AJ, Hasheem, and Ater were mentioned as having overcome what the average person has no comprehension.

Losing Jerome, although unfortunate, is not a tragedy. Our team lost Jerome and Doug Wiggins last year and then proceeded to win eight games building our confidence as a team and earning the respect of a lot of people around the country. Ever played sports? Ever been an underdog? Then you know what it is like to face adversity. Although losing Jerome does change the make-up of our team, it does not affect our potency.

If anyone is accusing me of understating Jerome’s importance you are severely mistaken. Jerome is by far and away our best perimeter defender and probably an All-Big East defender. He is our second leading scorer, a very versatile dribble-drive threat, and spot up shooter. He is a great player.

I mentioned in one of my earlier blogs that I was disappointed in Andy Katz for assuming that without Hasheem we wouldn’t be as successful as we have been. The point I was trying to make then is the same I’m trying to make now. On an elite team like the UConn Huskies there is no one person responsible for the rise and fall of the team throughout the season. If we have proved anything this year, it is that anyone can step up on any given night and deliver. That is our defining attribute. We find ways to win.

Five as one.
