So last Monday I we went over to Dougs for our normal week of guitar making. However the issue was that this time it wasn’t so normal… I came fully prepared for the night having cut strips of veneer and calculated all of my diameters for the wood circles I was going to inlay into the rosette.

I started by thickness sanding the plates of ebony and rosewood to 50 thousandths of an inch. Then using the calculations I had made for the inside and outside diametres we cut out the ebony ring with the circular router. However we experienced a problem…

The issue is that the slightest movement in the wood during the cutting of the inside circle will the ring will be A-circular. This presents an extreme problem as the ring you have cut to fit in an exact hole is now awkwardly shaped and will present with gaps when you inlay the rest of the rosette.

The best solution thusfar that I have to this problem is to inlay the ring into a jig after you have cut it out and re-cut the inside diametre. Though time consuming and extremely annoying we finally made an ebony ring…

I will get back to you next week with a hopefully finished rosette.

Alright I just finished some $6 nachos at the bar down the street Mitzie’s Sister with some buddies after my weekly visit to my mentor Luthier Doug. So that means its time for my next post. We finished my rosette today and have cut out the sound hole. It looks really rockin’!

Here are some pictures of it:

With glue:

After the scraper:

We did experience some challenges with making sure it fit perfectly. One major challenge was making sure the inner circle of rosewood was perfectly circular… I don’t know how it wasn’t because we routed it out only a few weeks prior. Maybe just it sitting around make it shrink on one side. So we had to take a little off the inner circle to make sure that we could fit all the veneer in without having to do too much dusting. So after much use of the calipers and making love to pieces of veneer and the circular router we finally got it done!

Charles almost finished making our thickness sander which is terrific as we have many guitars that need its use. It still needs some minor adjustments but its pretty much ready to rock!

Here is a picture of the thickness sander:

The following images show the stages gone through in order to produce the final cut-out pattern seen

The following images show the stages gone through in order to produce the final cut-out pattern seen at the end of this post. The steps in creating this classic 8-fold rosette tiling were set by Richard Henry in the Saturday workshop.

I completed this partly in the class itself following a worksheet he provided and then finished it off at home. I’m not even quite sure if I tiled the final stages correctly but I have to admit I am quite pleased with how it turned out

First few stages is getting the overall block shape of the Khattam down (two slightly rotated squares - one atop the other)

Using the shapes produced within the larger tile walls we found where the octagonal shape is formed, and then the 8-fold rosette within this (dashed lines)

At home I continued by re-producing the rosette in four other squares by tracing the orginal one to retain accuracy

Each stage was done on a new sheet of tracing paper as I like to preserve the stages. This also helps me to remember how I got from one stagee to another if I need to recreate it.

I then created thicker edges by adding two lines on the outer and inner sides of all existing lines that form the rosette petals. This adds a thick border to allow for a weave effect

Using another sheet of tracing paper I went over only the outer and inner lines but weaving each under and over the intersecting lines.

This is the photocopied cut-out against a black background

I then used the stencil to draw and cut out a black sheet filled completely with the pattern

Here is where I introduce the characters so that you know who’s important, and accordingly, who isn’t.

The Undead cast:
Victoria – Maleficent, if she was a Vampire, capable of changing into a dragon only under very extreme conditions, such as finding a cockroach nibbling away at her morning cereal.

Jacques Le Blanc – The others may from time to time address him as “Jack the White” to annoy the piss out him, only because he is french and detests anything English or American – mostly because he thinks he’s supposed to (yes, he’s THAT GUY).

Rosette – a softy really, quiet, keeps to herself, writes alot, dreams of being human again, if only to nail the priest she left after becoming a vampire. Undead and virgin … if she still believed in God, she’d most certainly agree He has a sense of humor.

Horus – Elegant, intelligent, virtuous, a real gentlemen of person – if you can refer to a vampire as a person – he thinks and acts regally, most of the time. Well, most of the time when he’s not drunk. And he’s drunk most of the time. You do the math.

Charlotte – She goes by Claire, and if you call her Charlotte she’ll suck your blood and eat your flesh. That was her grandmother’s name. And she hated that bitch.

D – As the name implies, little is known about him. We do know, however, that he is an existentialist, which is really sarcastic considering he’s undead. Go figure.

Cependant, quelques points me semblent loupés.

This is the second half of the story, started in my last post, about making a rosette from spalted beech.

The next step was to cut the channels around the edge of the rosette to receive the border strips. Again, I used my jig mounted Dremel for this.

Here the channels have been cut and the decorative strips bent more or less to the right curvature on the bending iron ready for glueing in.

And here is the finished rosette, planed flush with the soundboard and given a wipe of shellac. I shan’t cut the soundhole until I’ve planed the soundboard down to it final thickness.

A few weeks ago, I bought a block of spalted beech from Mark Bennett and mentioned, in a previous post, that I hoped it would make some striking guitar rosettes. I’ve been trying out some ideas. Here’s the piece of wood that provided the starting point.

Having decided which face looked most attractive, I set up the bandsaw for a fine cut and sawed two veneers at about 4mm thickness. Then I book-matched them to create a more or less symmetrical pattern, by gluing them onto thin (1/64 inch) plywood for stability. Actually, there’s a bit more to it than that. First, using weak hot hide glue, I stuck a sheet of paper to a 6 by 6 inch square of 6mm MDF. Then I stuck a similar sized square of 1/64 inch thick plywood over that, again using thin hide glue, and weighted it down until the glue was dry. This provided the base onto which the veneers were glued.

Using a Dremel mounted in a jig (details of jig available here) I cut out the rosette making the depth of cut just through the layer of thin plywood. It was then possible to remove the rosette using a thin blade – an ordinary knife from the dinner table works well – sliding it between the plywood and MDF layers in the plane of cleavage provided by the paper. Any paper or glue remaining on the underside of the rosette can easily be cleaned off with a hot damp cloth, which of course was the reason for using hide glue in the first place.

I missed the opportunity to photograph either the detached rosette or the routed channel in the soundboard but below you can see the rosette being glued into position on the soundboard, weighted down so that it dries flat.

THREE little piggies destined for the chop after being sold to a Scots hotel so customers could enjoy home reared bacon have had a surprise stay of execution – after becoming firm favourites of staff and guests.

The Dryburgh Abbey Hotel in St Boswell’s, Melrose, bought the pigs – nicknamed ‘The Girls’ – at a local butchery to be reared then slaughtered on the 10-acre estate to help with ingredients for their speciality dishes, including smoked bacon foam.

But now financial controller Mark Wallace and colleagues at the 38-bed hotel set on the banks of the River Tweed are having second thoughts after getting too attached to the animals over the past 11-weeks.

So much so they have also now ‘rescued’ a clutch of 22 chickens from a battery farm that have been laying dozens of fresh eggs every day as they breathe new life into the walled gardens.

Emotional bond

And the guests are growing attached to the animals as well – they are free to roam around the gardens and visit the animals in the walled area.

Mark’s brother, John, explained that the piglets were never supposed to become the friends that they are to the staff.

He said: “It’s 50-50. Originally, we intended to use them for meat. But now, I don’t think they’ll be slaughtered.

“There’s been an emotional bond already between them and the staff, who have their own names for them.”

AA Rosette

The 20 hens and two silky bantam cockerels were suffering from the effects of their cramped living conditions when they were brought to the hotel.

Mark said that the chickens had “hardly a feather between them” when they were found.

The animals are all part of the hotels plan to regeneration of the walled gardens and to improve the quality of food in their double AA rosette restaurant.

Mark said: “We have taken steps to make the hotel the best place in the Borders for food and drink, we are keen to enhance this side of the business.”

Ice cream

Gail and Joseph Glen from Glasgow have stayed at the hotel before, and said the mini-farm only added to its appeal.

Gail said: “It’s fantastic.

“We had dinner in the restaurant last night and it was great to know what eggs went into the ice cream.

“It’s a lifestyle choice really – more people these days want to know where their food comes from.”

Classic Hand Tools held a show at West Dean last weekend. It wasn’t a big event but I’m glad that I went for all sorts of reasons. One was the opportunity to meet Karl Holtey and to see and handle some of the planes that he makes. Another was to talk to Mark Bennett who, as always, had brought some amazing wood with him. With some difficulty, I succeeded in persuading him to part with this remarkable specimen of spalted beech.

It’s not a big block (only about 5 inches by 5 inches by 6 inches) but the figure is exactly the right scale for instrument making. My first thought was that it would make striking rosettes for guitars and I’ve been playing around with designs (using photocopies so as not to waste any of the material). Here’s one idea:

There is a saying by an unknown author that “anger is one letter short of danger.” This statement has never been more true than in the context of negotiations and mediations.

Anecdotally, people have expressed significant disapproval of anger and negative emotions during negotiation. Indeed, the usual response to anger is often to dig in heels even further. Nevertheless, there are always people who will feel that using negative emotions will cause the other side to capitulate to their demands. Although on some occasions, the “tantrum” tactic can work, on many occasions, the other side will simply refuse to participate in such conduct. In one mediation, one party attempted to tactically use anger to persuade the other side to take the final offer that he was proposing. Instead of having the desired outcome, the other side outright refused to accept any terms that the other lawyer offered. The negotiation then took an additional few hours to return to a sense of normalcy.

In another case, one party became known early on in the mediation to have a tantrum when things did not go his way. Within a short period of time, the other side became immune to his conduct and would simply wait out the tantrum, much like a parent might do with a petulant child. Needless to say the tantrum tactic was not effective.

Researchers Kopelman, Rosette, & Thompson, have found that tactics of using negative emotions can clearly be detrimental to negotiations. One study tested the influence of strategically displayed emotions, both positive and negative, on the outcome of negotiations. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that the strategic injection of “positive” emotions did not statistically affect the outcome of the negotiations. On the contrary, the introduction of “negative” emotions, such as anger significantly decreased the chance that the other side would accept the offer presented. In addition, when the opposing party was given a chance to counter the offer when negative emotions were introduced, the counters were more extreme and participants were less concerned whether the other side would accept the counter-proposal. Negative emotions clearly affected the outcome of the negotiations.

As a small side note, another study found that people who were optimistic, based upon standard personality tests had a lower risk of dying. Moreover, pessimistic participants were 42% more likely to die of any cause in the long run.

Applying the Research

All of us will have negative emotions at some time. If you have these emotions during a mediation or negotiation, take a time out. Take the time to collect your thoughts and find a way to express your feelings differently.

Use the mediator! Express your negative emotions to the mediator and not the other side. If you don’t have a mediator, then find someone on your team to vent your frustrations.

Seek to understand what is triggering your anger. Often anger stems from a feeling of being hurt or disrespected. For example, someone might be angry that the other side has such a low opinion that they would make such an outrageous offer. Once you understand the source, you can shut it off.

Choose not to get angry! Anger is within your control and is a choice. Simply choose not to get angry at the other side for what they are doing.

Okay so I have to talk about those. First because they’re beautiful, and then so I can finally close the tab that I’ve kept open for weeks on my browser to include the link here. ^^;

Some of you might be active BJD collectors/fans, and already know about them. But I don’t have any BJD yet and I’m not aware of all new dolls that appear. I’ve discovered the Rosette dolls at Silver Butterfly’s booth at the last Dollshow.

Aren’t those two girls pure beauties? I was under their spell the moment I saw them. I took tons of pictures and asked the young woman attending the booth what dolls they were. I didn’t remember seeing any like this before. Of course when I came home I had forgotten the name! :s I knew I had to note it down. So began a search through the Internet to find them again. I discovered that the booth was shared between Silver Butterfly and CoCoon… and found the dolls on CoCoon’s blog!

I learned again there that they are called Rosette and that the owner of the blog had done a custom make-up on them. After a few more searches I then found their official website: Rosette school of dolls (warning: the site doesn’t work well with Mozilla Firefox, I have to use IE). They’re made by Soom, and are supposed to be pupils of an elite school. You can also find them for sale at Soom’s regular online shop. They’ve just released limited dolls for summer with closed or half-closed eyes (I like the regular ones better, but some might prefer those! And for only $30 more it’s not very expensive considering they’re kind of limited).

There are currently 5 different dolls: Camellia, Violet, Fir, Marguerite and Armeria. They’re 47.5cm high and can have two kinds of body: girl body or lady body. The only difference is the bust (girl = small breasts, 14.3cm chest circomference ; lady = bigger breasts, 16cm chest circomference). Their head circomference is 17cm/6.5inches and their eye size 12 or 14 mm. You can find the other measurements in the “library” page of the “Rose house” section. You cannot choose the body type yourself, it depends on the girl. Only Marguerite and Fir have the lady body.

Both customized dolls on Silver Butterfly’s booth are Fir. Above is the official picture of Fir’s standard version. This shows how the make-up is important in a doll’s character, because they seem very different from each others. Fir is my favourite of all the molds. Violet is nice and Camellia is quite cute also, but Fir have a little something that makes her special in my eyes. I so wish I had $423 to spend. ^^; And that I knew how to make-up a doll. I love the custom make up CoCoon gave the dolls, compared to the stock make-up, which is very pretty but classic, it’s wonderful. I know it is part of why they enchanted me like that. The one on the right especially (with not much clothes on). She reminded me of a french comic book series I like a lot, “Sky doll”. Especially the character named Agappe. I’m not sure why now that I look at the pictures, but at the time she gave me the same feeling. It might be the thin body, bare breast and “dreamy” make-up.

If you don’t need a Rosette doll now I don’t understand you. Okay, just kidding, but I really think those are wonderful and I’m totally obsessing over them (as if the U-noa girls weren’t enough). And it must be nice to have a bigger doll to make clothes for (1/6 is nice, but very small :s And human size is sometimes a little too big and fabric consuming). Sigh…

PS: the funny thing is that the booth was very popular, but not because of those. Just beside they had a set-up with big male BJD, that attracted all the attention. I was the only one there captivated not by the male dolls but by those two beauties. ;p As usual you can find all the pics from this booth on my Flickr, including the hot guys.

PPS: here is a blog which is for now showing pictures of Rosette dolls only (in Japanese): http://ghungroos.jugem.jp/
