The environment of Madagascar is in a critical situation due to the illegal logging and fraudulent MASSIVE export of Malagasy rosewood. This situation has started when the Malagasy political turmoil has worsen and when Marc Ravalomanana, the former president of the “red island”, has really lost his control over the country. The rosewood trafficking is not the only “environmental crime” which has occured but it remains the worst ecological disaster that Madagascar has experienced.

Nowadays, it appears that the rosewood trafficking involves also a “big” French shipping company: CMA – CGM. Through its Malagasy subsidiary, CMA – CGM Madagascar (which parent company is headquartered in Marseille, France), this shipping company ships out of Madagascar’s sea borders countless containers of illegaly logged rosewood.

“Everybody is deemed to know the law” CMA – CGM knows very well that through transporting illegal goods, it is liable to penalties. These goods (the rosewood) are considered by the law as illegal when their logging have been illegaly made … which is clearly the fact here, and CMA – CGM knows IT!

CMA – CGM Madagascar is among the four great shipping companies which operate in Madagascar: CMA – CGM, UAFL, Spanfreight and Safmarine. These three laters have agreed to stop carrying rosewood following criticism but CMA – CGM remains “very active” despite repeated complaints from conservation groups. Such behaviour reflects the general attitude of French economic leaders in Madagascar: arrogant and contemptuous. Such behavious is promoted by a sense of impunity provided by the current Malagasy state led by Andry Nirina Rajoelina who is believed as very close to French interests.

Facing all of these criticisms, CMA – CGM Madagascar has declared that it has already obtained an authorization from the minister of environment and forests … No kidding! And if you were granted with an authorization to ship slaves, would you do it ???

According to the conservation groups, CMA – CGM has, at many times, been warned that the goods they carry were of illegal origin, but this French company just don’t care …

With the CMA- CGM’ s acts in Madagascar, it is the global image and reputation of French companies which are spoilt.

It goes without saying that Hong Kong native is one of (if not the) biggest names in vinyl figure design. Rosewood is an abandoned insane asylum north west of Baltimore, MD. Most of the sanitarium was shut down decades ago. At the time we visited, the drug treatment facility was still in operation. However, that has since been shut down as well. Unfortunately our camera died just as we took the first photos of the second building we were able to explore.

So this Monday was action packed for me! As Charles tried to figure out the dimensions of his rosette for lone wolf I was taking names all night as I blazed through the initial steppes of volcano.

I showed you guys some of the teaser shots to Volcano earlier so you have an idea of what it will look like. The wood for the back and sides is Padouk and the top is a Sitka bear claw top. The style of this guitar is a little different from Rose Delight (yet to have an official name). As opposed to the dreadnought style body I am making this an OM style. A little smaller with more curve between the upper and lower bouts. Hopefully the nice tone wood being used here really makes this guitar boom. The combination of colours being used for this wood will also make it very eye catching adding accents of Madagascar rosewood for the fingerboard, rosette and possibly the bindings.

So I raced through thickness sanding and cutting out the shapes of the back and top. The bear claw top has some awesome figuring and the back looks just like I was hoping.

I also worked on my rosewood guitar. We chiseled of the excess wood from the sides which was a rather nerve wracking process considering you are basically gauging chunks of wood out of your guitar and hoping it doesn’t split. After much reassurance that the grain would not split perpendicular because of the direction of the grain I was made to “Step-Up” to the task.

Next after that I performed a technique called “driving the bus” which is the technique used to create the curved contour on the back of the guitar to help drive the sound towards the sound hole. This basically entails taking a bowled out circle of wood the the radius that you want and a giant circle of sandpaper and by pretending to turn a bus steering wheel over and over you gradually sand out the radius of the bowl into the sides.

Look at the angle of the one below! Thats because a dread is 4″ at one end at 5″ at the other.

After an all round kick butt weekend I topped it off with a terrific monday!

Went for the classic $6 Nachos’s at Mitzi’s sister and watched/listened to a band named “Big City Hicks” who seem to have stolen their name from a band in the states but are actually quite good. Then I went and met up with my buddy Jacko and discussed soccer tactics for our new team.

But before all this the epic action occurred. We glued the sides together today. I hit that moment today more-so than when I finished my rosette that I finally realized how epic this was that I was making my own guitars. There was nothing more satisfying that finally seeing the body of your first guitar take shape in the jig.

We had a few challenges and that was making sure that the head-block had the correct angle on it to fit the cutaway in it, and making sure that we glued it in the absolute correct spot. These challenges came from my mentor luthier, Doug’s, inexperience with cutaways. We were all good tonight though with a few proper measurements and a little “Man-Up” coaxing we finally got it done.

The Mobifone sponsored Rock Storm series of music concerts officially began its course last night sweeping off about 25,000 victims at the My Dinh Stadium in Ha Noi.

So just take your time and buy the right type of walking shoe for you.

As you are looking for a new pair of walking shoes be sure that they are sold for walking and not something else. So if you are planning a walking/hiking trip you want a good shoe that’s suits both. The type of walking shoe you should have is one to be firm on your feet but should be able to bend easily as well. If you happen to be walking and it starts raining you need to get a shoe that will protect your feet from dampness causing blisters.

If you can not seem to find a good walking shoe you like you should then try the running shoe section. These types of shoes are good to walk or run in. You could buy a pair of hiking boots but they would only be useful for walking in the woods and not on pavement.

You should always dress to what or how the weather is acting. If it is hot and you want to get a good workout and really sweat then you might be interested in a sweat suit.
