We have a lovely old fashioned sweet shop in Chorlton, and I have recently discovered how amaaazing

We have a lovely old fashioned sweet shop in Chorlton, and I have recently discovered how amaaazing their fudge is. It’s almost like a cross between traditional fudge and that lovely Scottish delicacy I’m so fond of, tablet. Tablet is slightly more brittle than your usual fudge and has a more grainy sugary texture. Very sweet and sickly but oh so yummy!

Having quite a lot of dull tasks to complete this weekend, we decided a little trip to the sweet shop for some treats to help us along would be a good idea. They had so many delicious sounding flavours but we eventually narrowed the options down to whisky & ginger (two of my all time favourite things!) and rum & raisin (such a good combination!). Unfortunately we could not decide between the two and so had no choice but to buy some of each!

While both were indeed delicious, I liked the ginger & whisky fudge the best. It had a stronger flavour and had actual little pieces of ginger in it, mmm! Both fudges were ridiculously sweet and rich and melted in the mouth. Oh so good!

We also threw in some traditional rosy apples for good measure!

(I must admit I do feel ever so slightly sick now… should probably step away from the fudge for a while…)

2nd November 2011 Rosy apple cake truffles as a thank you gift for our cider-making hosts. Truffles

2nd November 2011

Rosy apple cake truffles as a thank you gift for our cider-making hosts.

Truffles are made with chocolate chip loaf cake, dipped in coloured white chocolate, then decorated with apple stalks and mint leaves. Bottoms are trimmed with a scalpel and polished with gold lustre dust.

Experimenting with loaf cake was fine but not as smooth a texture as a chocolate sponge (slightly grittier).

I also think it’s time to invest in proper chocolate colourings since the white chocolate kept seizing. Still happy with them though.as they’re mighty pretty!

Above: The apples/cakes all packaged up and ready for their journey to Somerset.

I can’t stop using egg boxes as packaging, they kept the cake truffles safe throughout hours on the train and they just look so lovely and rustic. Mint leaves needed replacing (as you can see here) but that was no biggie. For longer periods of time perhaps I could make coloured chocolate leaves or candy them. Hmm…

During the week it's hard to find the time to cook such a volume of unhealthy food. The weekend

During the week it's hard to find the time to cook such a volume of unhealthy food.

The weekend is the time when you’re under no pressure to do anything you don’t want to do. That is unless you work weekends or if you’re a student, when the work never stops and you’re under constant pressure to go out and drink copious amounts of alcohol.

In terms of food the weekend is also a break. During the week I eat healthy things, or at least try to, giving off the impression to those around me that I am, in fact, a healthy being. At the weekend I eat gloriously unhealthy things, get up in the afternoon and go out in the evening, followed by the inevitable nauseating food from the slimy take-away at 3am.

Today’s food is a typical weekend diet:

12:30- Bacon sandwich. Three rashers was probably too many in a small bread roll. Is having butter wrong? I think it’s a great addition to a bacon sandwich.

13:50- Some toblerone.

14:02- One ready salted, oven baked crisp.

15:30- Three rosy apples. A great sweet.

17:00- A cookie. Sainsburys did a great job on this one.

18:30- Steak, wedges and onion rings, with sweetcorn.

18:45- Haribo. The Saturday dessert.

Now I’m off out. Expect a early morning snack in tomorrows post.
