The international organization known as Rotary promotes travel each year, that all men aged between

The international organization known as Rotary promotes travel each year, that all men aged between 26 and 40, male and female, and from all backgrounds know – - because it is a Rotary-funded study, six weeks on board, and everyone can apply, should a part of this important life experience. If you are in that age group – you could enjoy the kind of experience that is described in my notes in this article, too. They want to know more about the program go to the Rotary International Web site andSearch for GSE – Group Study Exchange – and contact your local Rotary Club for more information.

Our adventure continues:

13. April – Wednesday:

Nope, no women in the Rotary Club or English either – and she translated my speech with a cell phone – it's all an experience. After Ms. Tanaka served me a hearty breakfast – they said that was the coffee from Seattle, the cereal from Switzerland, Germany, the marmalade, almonds from California, and the balm from somewhereothers – the avocado was definitely from here – Alan and I went on the road for about 40 minutes to a more rural town called Ukiha, Fukuoka to attend the Rotary Club Ukiha, Fukuoka. I laughed, although I do not understand the language – at a Rotary meeting is like go to church, because the world more than they have the same format.

This club had about 40 members – and like the others, they open the meeting with a song – in Japan, with what we as Glory, Glory Hallelujah, the know consider them tobe religious recognition. Tamaki Oi came with us for the visit – and it was fun to meet them because they will be on the incoming team, if this area her team sends us next year. The ride there and back reminded me of a trip to Gilroy from home in California – two mountain ranges on both sides, one more roll and velvet-like, and the other tougher mountains, with green meadows in between. It is expensive to belong to Rotary in Japan – they tell me that their contributions are $ 250 a month – butthey do not fund-raising projects, they write checks. Alan has asked me to speak about women – imagine my reluctance – and he says that this is a topic of its governor. So – I asked for questions at the end of my speech – and a man asked me if I knew the Soroptomists – in other words could, women, instead of joining the club.

Yahoo …. we become a famous hot springs this evening – I would love all the hot springs can be found on Kyushu, and I understand that there is a lotthem. It helps me recover from jet lag.

As the evening turned – it was wonderful inspiration – if the girls – Teiko Tanaka, her daughter, Ai, and I went out to dinner. We went to a restaurant, the French we had a nice selection and then another. The food here – and the small dishes that you please the eye and the palette with thoughtful details in French cuisine and Japanese. We talked at length about the role of women in Japanese society and the changesthat occur. Women here see the same dilemma, and these are secular women who have a cross cultural perspective. The conversation continues in a long enjoy the hot springs – a charming spot, is in the mountains overlooking the valley. We first wash, as is customary, and then go outside to the shallow basin surrounded by large boulders that the pelvis of forms for its mineral water. It is good to bask in the intimacy. It's 1PM on the time that we fall in bed. The other teamMembers had a good day.

14. April – Thursday:

A really full day is held today – a day of sightseeing. We gather at about 10 in the house Izumi – and the team looks forward to each other after going their separate ways to see yesterday. Let us get to Hiroshi (Mr. Tanaka's) Toyota minibus and off we go. The first stop is at the brewery in Tanoshimaru Sake Wakatakeya. We sit in the Japanese style around a large brown wooden table with a Japanese flower arrangement in the center – a large bowl withCamellia have branches and pink flowers. What do they serve us all delicious, and from some of the production's sake – like the soup from the separation of the rice and made sake and the dessert was a plum, also because of the sake. The sweet little cup filled with clear reasons – and later unfiltered sake – what we all agreed the best, and we all took home bottles for later from the store.

We drove forty-five minutes or so – and were too Akizuki and led theRuins there. Marvelous – it was a perfect picture of the city, and we walked the length of Market Street which was lined with blossoming cherry trees. There were vendors and charming shops all the way along, and the walls and bridges of the old castle. We stayed for a while and took in the peaceful character of the village, walked the long staircase through the old gate has a lot of pictures because it was so beautiful, and had laughed together. The cherry blossomsfloated in the air like it's snowing, and the green hills were alive. We stopped at the ice cream parlor because he thought it was Antonio Tiger Woods – and everybody laughed. We noted that we are the way that feels life is very popular in Japan.

Down the street, we ducked into Takagi Kyusuke Shoten for Kuzu-kiri. If you are wondering what that is – it's a noodle from a root that a strength is made, and immerse them in a molasses kind of soup to eat with chopsticks. Itwas a famous little shop, and we enjoyed tea with Kuzu-kiri – and said as Izumi, this is the real Japan. We are blessed because we have begun to understand that we see things that are possible only because this is the home of our hosts, that if all the good things known – and show us the inner parts of their culture and country . As we drive on the road, turn left Akizuki, we stop at a bridge, a thousand years old and Tumbling take water over the rocks below – withabundant green touch the edges.

Again, a little less than an hour in the car – and we come in Dazaifu, the very famous shrine in Dazaifu Shinto. We learn that not a wonder-Shinto religion but a way to further knowledge for the mind. We are treated to an unusual experience – we are on the side steps on the floor of the shrine, with the decoration in front of us – and Izumi has arranged for a special ceremony for us with the priest. It is a blessing, and as inJapanese, we do not understand what they say – but bless them a few palm trees and invite us to place them on the altar. We stopped at the front of the shrine of the "flying plum tree, see" (because legend has it that she flew there from another island), and a thousand year old tree with a big base. And then went back on a famous bridge to the village.

Well, we would to dinner – I thought that the Japanese do not eat as much until today. We drove for about an hour Ogori- By Ogori Tsuzumi. This was a special occasion, organized by the hosts. It has not been a restaurant, which is advertised – it is the hobby of a man, the president of a well known company for ten years in retirement, and now cooks for special groups. We were greeted warmly – and came into a room in a Japanese style tables. We had to first learn how to make soba noodles add – and with a big bowl of him, we were invited to join the chef to start with the buckwheat flour, on water, shakeCornmeal consistency, knead – and then turning with sticks until very thin, cut with a sharp knife – make the noodles. The boss was very precise about the thickness and get the dough into a square. Harry, Monica, Julia, Antonio and I all take turns in preparing. Harry learned to see the dough to feel if they're all the same thickness.

Then, dinner – a start with half the cast in a bucket to dive with the pan, and highlight the first of many plates – by the soba noodles. ThePlates were very pretty and half cups were bright colors – and we filled each others cups. Meanwhile, we have been sitting on the floor in Japanese style for about four hours today – and our American butts and hips are groaning – and we notice how comfortable sitting our Japanese hosts. We laugh a lot when eating is not surprising because Hiroshi magic tricks that left us all spell. How did he do it? The dollar bills out of his hand hovered a person to another – and the chopstick was moving in theTable and not even touch it – and to look after the operation to Julia's in hand, with fixed concentration, the time is shifted forward by one hour – and bend the spoon, if none of us can touch it.

In this group, we need not reach all the talk to understand because there are only good humor and fellowship. The chef is happy that we are satisfied with his works, and each arc many, many, many times on the way out the door. It was a day in which no tourist would encounter –and it is only through the gift of the network of Rotary – and every one of my team members individually make the comment to me – that we have experienced this incredible day.

This article is a series – so read on – and for many days to follow in our wonderful adventure!

I spent some time yesterday reading over the materials that Rotary International gave me at my Outbound Scholar Orientation back in April. It was a great opportunity to reflect on what my purpose is here and how lucky I am to actually be here, right now. I decided to write down three major goals of what I would like to accomplish during my time here. They are:

1) To serve as an ambassador of goodwill by building relationships, sharing my experiences, and connecting people in the US, Peru, and other parts of South America.

2) To learn more about medicine and public health through study, research and service projects.

3) To really live in Peru, learning the language, customs, culture, and diversity of this exciting country.

The clean water challenge - An integrative approach can solve a three-pronged problem that affects billions

Around the world, hundreds of millions of us share a similar morning routine that’s dominated by water. We wake up in our homes and walk to a nearby room containing a toilet, sink, and shower or bath. We use the toilet, wash our bodies, brush our teeth. We make our way to the kitchen, where we fill a kettle or pot with cool water to brew our wake-up cup of tea or coffee. In much of the world, however, this is not the routine. Daily life is marked by a lack of access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene resources. This three pronged problem constitutes the core challenge in the lives of billions worldwide. Instead of turning on a tap in their homes, 884 million people must fetch their water for drinking, cooking, and washing from crude, unprotected wells or straight from rivers, dams, lakes, canals, and ponds. The sanitation statistics are even grimmer: 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation facilities, such as flush or composting toilets. Instead they use buckets, bags, or open pit latrines, or they simply practice open defecation in bushes, fields, and other unprotected public areas, both rural and urban.

The consequences are devastating for the health and welfare of millions (see sidebar on disease). Of the 1.8 million deaths each year from diarrhea, including more severe diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, 88 percent are due to unsafe water or inadequate sanitation or hygiene, and 1.4 million are children ages five and younger, according to the World Health Organization. Malnutrition related deaths of children five and under caused by unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and insufficient hygiene total 860,000 a year.

Contact with feces-contaminated soil or food causes hookworm, ascariasis, and other intestinal infections that affect one-third of the world’s population. Water, sanitation, and hygiene issues influence socioeconomic conditions as well. Women and girls who spend hours fetching water can’t attend school or earn money. A lack of private sanitation facilities discourages girls from attending school, especially as they reach puberty. Teachers can’t teach and farmers can’t work when they’re infected with waterborne diseases that incapacitate adults. Untreated human waste affects fish, aquatic mammals, and vegetation. What can be done But there is hope. Though the issue seems overwhelming in scope – like polio was decades ago – much can be done, according to experts such as John Oldfield, executive vice president of the U.S.- based nonprofit Water Advocates. Along with many public and private organizations worldwide, Water Advocates is dedicated to solving the global drinking water and sanitation crisis. “Eighty-three percent of the planet has access to safe water, and more than 60 percent has access to toilets,” Oldfield points out. “We’ve solved it in the United States, in Western Europe, in Japan and Australia. Many places have universal coverage of water and toilets. We know what the cure is. We need the political and popular will, and once that’s there, then the money flows.” Advocates of the cause are particularly focused on the UN Millennium Development Goals. Goal 7, to ensure environmental sustainability, calls for reducing by half the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation by 2015. The world is on track to meet the water goal, but not sanitation. Though the practice of open defecation is declining, at the current rate of progress, the number of people without access to improved sanitation will only decrease by about 100 million, to 2.4 billion, by the target date.

Hardest hit on the clean water side is 42 percent of sub-Saharan Africa’s population, which gets water from unimproved sources. The problem is also prevalent in Asia, as well as in parts of Latin America. Lack of adequate sanitation facilities is most problematic in southern Asia, where 48 percent of the population practices open defecation. The response from Rotary International has been huge (see “By the Numbers”). Two groups in particular, RI’s Water Resource Group and the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group, offer guidance, support, and leadership to clubs interested in implementing water, sanitation, and hygiene-related projects. Past District Governor Ron Denham, the action group’s founding chair, regularly networks with advocates from UNICEF, CARE, and other organizations to determine how best to approach the water, sanitation, and hygiene crisis. In turn, he says, “we help Rotarians identify appropriate solutions, help arrange funding, match them with partner clubs, and match them with local NGOs [nongovernmental organizations]. We’re brokers of information and relationships and technology.” Education a major factor The approach toward solving the crisis has become holistic, says Ed Cain, vice president of grant programs for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, which concentrates its safe-water efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. “It’s not just about having a clean cup of water, as beneficial as that is,” he says. “It doesn’t improve the health of the community unless we teach them how to manage and handle the water in a way to avoid illness and disease.” If you have open defecation in a community, he says, “you won’t achieve the result of healthy communities, where kids stay in school and lead healthy and productive lives.” Where water is a luxury, populations need education on the importance of hand-washing and the consequences of fecal contamination by humans and animals on the community’s health and welfare. “In many cases, we’ll bring safe water to a household, but the users will put their [unwashed] hands in a clean receptacle because we haven’t gotten them to change their behaviors,” Denham says.

In addition, the solutions must be sustainable. Communities must take responsibility for and maintain water systems into the future, using affordable parts that are easy to obtain. “We need to lay down roles and responsibilities for stakeholders,” says Peter Lochery, director of CARE USA’s water team. “Good policy needs to be developed and implemented.” “We have to make sure the systems are seen as part of the community infrastructure, not just something from well-meaning donors,” says Clarissa Brocklehurst, chief of water, sanitation, and hygiene for UNICEF.

Rotary’s response: Rotarians worldwide are tackling the issue. In Ghana, according to Past District Governor K.O. “Willie” Keteku, less than 60 percent of people have access to clean water, and just 30 percent have access to good sanitation and hygiene resources. The situation is worse in rural areas, which is where 70 percent of the population lives, and where the nation’s 21 Rotary clubs concentrate their efforts. “Last year my club drilled boreholes with hand pumps and storage tanks to provide water for eight communities in rural areas, and this year we’re adding another eight,” he says. “These days, we don’t do water projects without sanitation. Many clubs work on the provision of water and sanitary facilities to schools and clinics, providing latrines and facilities to wash hands, with boys and girls getting separate facilities in a long block. We call those institutional latrines. It’s a particular design approved by the Ministry of Health.” Keteku is particularly excited nabout the new RI-USAID collaboration, which intends to provide funds to build an esti-mated 200 new sanitation and water facilities throughout Ghana. The money will also fund hygiene education and community organization. Residents – mainly women – will be taught to collect a small fee from users to support facilities far into the future. The levies are so low that nearly every household can pay; whenever they can’t, exemptions are given. This business involvement from the community members will instill a sense of ownership, fostering greater long-term integration of the project.

In Kenya, says Rotarian Edward Kairu, a member of the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group and a professor of climatology, clubs are focusing on providing sanitation blocks to residents of Nairobi’s crowded slums, where toilets and running water are rarities. The blocks have separate water kiosks, showers, and toilets for men and women. In Kibera, an urban slum that’s home to an estimated 800,000 people, 10 sanitation blocks have been installed, serving 2,000 people a day. Community development organizations maintain them and collect levies from users. “We have cholera outbreaks, a lot of illnesses, worms. Children play outside and come across waste, especially when it rains and there’s flooding. One of the interventions we do is improving drainage to remove waste from slums, because it becomes completely unimaginable with the runoff,” Kairu says.

Natural disasters can also cut access to clean water. When an earthquake destroyed a small town’s pumping facility outside Istanbul, residents weren’t able to pay for a replacement. “So mainly women and children would walk for miles to a nearby village to get water,” explains David Keller, past president of the Rotary Club of Campbell, California, USA, which partnered with the Rotary Club of Istanbul- Topkapi to provide water access.

Since July 2007, clean water from 13 mountain springs has flowed through a pipeline to a 500-ton facility that serves 1,285 villagers. The village has set water fees and will use them to maintain the new system, says Keller. “We worked with the village elders, via the local Rotary club, to do this,” he says. “The outpouring of thanks was astonishing. People had tears in their eyes.” Though the challenge to ensure clean water, better sanitation, and proper hygiene is daunting, the answers are there and the goals achievable. “To throw up our hands and say ‘This is an undoable goal’ is not correct,” says the Hilton Foundation’s Ed Cain. “We have to look at the Millennium Development Goals, particularly to reduce by half the proportion of those without access to sustainable, safe drinking water. To reduce by half would be a huge jump, given population growth. The world is on track to achieving that goal.”

Hello everyone,

It has been a little while since I last updated and for that you have my sincere apologies. During the lengthy time that I was away, you have been kept woefully (yes, it is my delusion this blog is a crucial part of some people’s lives) unaware of my recent exploits. I have progressed much in my Chinese since the last time we spoke, and a recent event helps to encapsulate that fact: just yesterday I put my Chinese skills up to the test in a Rotary sponsored Chinese competition. While I failed to place in the contest, it was a terrific learning experience and helped me to practice my Chinese and public speaking skills. Although I did not place, it was nice to hear other people share their experiences here and their opinions of Taiwan and the language, and those who did win the prize money certainly deserved.

It was a lot of fun to interact with my teacher Tan Laoshi (Teacher Tan) and the TLI President, Mrs. Chang, both of whom were supportive and kind as they came along with the students. There were four of us TLI students in total, consisting of, besides myself, another student I had never met before, named Eena, and two other Ambassadorial Scholars, Glorya Cho and Debra Van Camp. All in all, I think we preformed admirably. Granted, my perception of my speech was, shall we say, limited by comparison, but I had fun nonetheless.

In the end, it was a wonderful experience and I learned quite a lot in the process, despite how much I was initially concerned. In any case, it was a growing experience. And the 600NT the participants earned didn’t hurt any either.

Well, I will try to pop on later on this week to add more to my experiences,

Until then,

Alex

Rotary honors ‘quiet’ contributor

PATASKALA — After years of quietly working in the background, Pataskala’s “guardian angel” was recognized for his generosity on Thursday.

Tom Johnston, the owner of J&D Basement Systems (Note: That’s us, The Basement Doctor organization) on U.S. 40 for 22 years, was presented the Pataskala Rotary Club’s prestigious Vocational Service Award.

“He is a local businessman who epitomizes the requirements of the Vocational Service Award,” said Judy Baird, who nominated Johnston for the honor. “He’s generous. He is ethical and caring. He does whatever he can do to help people in need.”

In presenting a plaque signifying the honor, Rotarian Julie Maurer echoed the words in Baird’s nomination form, calling Johnston a “guardian angel.

“He discretely and anonymously does many acts of kindness for those in need,” Maurer said, including support of special service events, Little League baseball, and a special tornado awareness event last spring.

“He’s helped families in need with groceries and payment of utility bills and helped people move,” Maurer said. “In the past two years he has provided thousands of dollars to people in need in Pataskala. He sees the need and steps up quietly….”

Maurer added that Johnston often hires individuals who are need desperate need of employment.

Criteria for the Vocational Service Award include demonstration of pride and extraordinary leadership skills, making visible contributions to the quality of life in the Licking County community, enhancing the performance of one’s business or institution, and setting high standards for ethical relationships with employees, peers and customers.

Johnston, in accepting the honor, said he was honored to be listed among several civic-minded individuals who are past award winners. Previous honorees present were Martha Tykodi, Daniel Bauer, and Tom and Margaret Caw.

“These are people who contribute a lot to the community,” Johnston said.
