I haven’t really taken the time to talk about music all that much, at least not on here.  I think its time to change that.  Music is such a huge part of my life.  Not concerts and clubbing even, its more a personal experience for me.  Don’t get me wrong, I love love love to share my music, but its more of an intimate thing.  I think this is one of the reasons that being a DJ never really stuck with me and I moved on to something else.

I think of exploring the music dimension and imagine exploring deep space, filled with nebulae, stars, and occasionally, a habitable planet or exciting pulsar.  I am not one for Top 40 or really for music that plays on most radio stations.  I’ve always seen these as kind of the layman’s or lazyman’s way to find new music (if I’m referring to you, I apologize, I’m a snob).  I have found music in so many different avenues, though last.fm has been a huge help.  When people talk about Pandora internet radio, I could rant for ages at how limited Pandora’s underground music selection is.

So just for a basic run down, let me tell you my music listening past.  I grew up on classic rock and classic and still have a healthy respect for both, though there are only so many times you can hear “We Will Rock You” or “Kashmir”.  I went through a very brief alternative rock and grunge phase when it was popular.  I then hopped into Punk rock for a solitary minute.  Then I started listening to trance and house as I started college.  I loved electronic music, but what I started to find is that the briefest exposure I had to goth electronic i.e. synthpop, industrial, EBM, made me love that genre much more than just trance.  I’ve been exploring goth ever since the middle of my college years.

I kind of have this unofficial goal that I set for myself.  Its never really been in stone.  Basically, I want to try to find 1 new awesome song each week that I have never heard before.  Some months, I go with a dry spell.  Other times, I hit the freaking jack pot.  I remember when I was trying to look for the band Cut Rate Box and accidentally typed in or stumbled across Mind.In.A.Box.  I got their only album that was out at the time (Lost Alone).  I was absolutely blown away.  They are still probably my favorite band (and almost the only band I haven’t seen in concert that I really *really* want to see).

The two gems that I have found in the past two weeks are by two bands I’ve already loved and known for a hot couple minutes.

This song made me wonder why I thought that new Covenant was heading in a direction that I didn’t like. After giving this a couple dozen listens, I decided to listen to their album, Skyshaper, again. I found that I enjoyed it much much more than I remembered. I think I went into that album with the wrong mindset and then it convinced me that new Covenant would just be sucky (not true at all). I’m sorry Covenant, I love you.

Finally True Blood puts some “Real” Goth music into their show.  for the longest time, I couldn’t figure out why they don’t put some better Traditional Goth or Industrial, or even hip new Goth/Cyber-Goth/Industrial into their show. Seems everything is pseudo Goth or just cheap whiskey rock. Well, at the end of week 3 or 4′s show, they played Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Spellbound”.  My totally most favorite Siouxsie Sioux Tune of all time. Whenever I talk on the phone too long on my “Soundz From the Scene” radio show or just space out and the song’s about to run out, I have a few “Go To” songs and “Spellbound”, “Sex on Wheels”, “Cuts you Up”, “A Daisy Chain for Satan” and anything by Rotersand is what I play.  These are also tunes I would recommend for True Blood.  The Rotersand Song I’m digging right now is “I Don’t Know” man its got such a catchy groove to it, very catch and hard to get out of my head this summer.

But it would be also really awesome if they played Rotersand’s “Exterminate, Annihilate, Destroy”  that would work well with what’s happening this year on True Blood-perfectly fitting for the show this season!

E! A! D! E! A! D! Oh Yeah!!

And Tonight, I was at the Premiere of the slightly off, partially funny, yet entertaining in a slightly action packed (oxymoron) messed up way-Columbiana! And at the end of it, they played one of my favorite slow NIN tunes-”In the End” at least that’s what I usually call it. Funny part was it wasn’t sung by Trent but by some guy who sounded like Johnny Cash. But he’s dead so I’m not quite sure who sung it, but it sounded pretty nice. First time I didn’t stay for the credits, but I’ll let you know who sung em’ soonest. That’s a bit all for now, I gotta get some sleep.

At Wave Gotik Treffen days do rather beautifully melt into one and other. That is why I mistakenly said that When We Were Young took place on Friday when in fact it took place on Saturday night. I have no clue where I was on Friday Night (therefore probably Sixtina) and if anyone can remind/enlighten me I would be most grateful!

After an afternoon trip to Morrison’s Irish Pub to meet with friends, we missed Luxury Stranger (who after endorsements from friends, I was eager to see) due to some stupidity on my part. We didn’t realised we had missed the gig until we turned up so spent some time milling around the Werk II area and had some food and drinks.

We then decided to investigate the Pagan Village for a bit. The Pagan Village is a fantastic place to just lay back and relax at the festival. At the Pagan Village you can taste all kinds of freshly made food from freshly baked goods to a whole pig roast! All can be consumed with mead (from a drinking horn if you are willing to pay extra) or beer. There are also many stalls full of everything from homemade elderberry wine to medieval style clothing.

After the Pagan Village I made my way to the Agra Halle to see a band who’s performance turned out to be one of the highlights of the festival – Rotersand.

As a recent EBM convert, I really only knew Rotersand for “Exterminate, Annihilate, Destroy” (especially being the Doctor Who geek I am) but unlike some electronic bands they really put on a tremendous show. They opened to an expectant and excited crowd to “Basterds Screaming” – a brilliant call to rebellion from their new album “Random is Resistance“.

Rascal Nikov and Gunther Gerl really got the crowd going – jumping around on stage and looking like they were having a fantastic time. One of the things that I think sets a decent performance apart from a great performance is interaction with the audience which Rotersand did beautifully – talking to the audience and jumping down to party with the rest of the Agra Halle.

Just to add to what would have been an already fantastic performance, Rascal then unexpectedly invited a very special guest onto the stage – Ronan Harris of the fantastic British/Irish Futurepop kings VNV Nation!

Rascal and Ronan did a special duet version of “Merging Oceans” - Rotersand‘s breakthrough hit. This really was a great treat for the audience at Agra – seeing these two giants of the alternative scene perform together and if the crowd weren’t excited enough, then this sent them wild!

Ronan leaving the stage took the tone down a little but Rotersand’s top performing skills kept the pace. Of particular note, during “War on Error” Gunther Gerl donned a dollar sign mask which added well to the tone of the song which is about being against a “big brother society”.

As a finale to Rotersand‘s set the voices of the Daleks were heard to introduce Rotersand‘s most famous track – “Exterminate, Annihilate, Destroy“.

Then, on the recommendation of a friend, we went to see Portugese Goth Metalers Monspell. Despite not particularly being a Metal Head myself it was an enjoyable gig. They gave a good performance and the graphics and music videos on the wall behind the band definitely added to the performance. As previously stated I’m not a metal fan so I can’t really say that the music was to my taste but by the reactions of a friend who is a fan of Moonspell it was a good performance.

Because the A37 it closed completely from the cross A37/A2 my navigational system and I got into some heavy dispute about which route to take, so I ended up driving around the city of Hannover for close to 45 minutes. It took me quite some time to figure out how to stop the fucking little piece of annoying hardware from trying to get me back on the closed road. (They seem to be renovating a bridge…) So I missed the first act of the evening and arrived when Rotersand were already half through their set list. Still they were really nice, the atmosphere was great – it was a great party and I even knew some songs! Their show was full of energy and the had a DJ on stage so most songs came with a new sound for me.

Next were VNV Nation. What could you say? Maybe just use Ronan’s own words: “Das ist einfach wunderbar!” After the first song the crowd was cheering for some minutes and you could see that the musicians on stage were taken by surprise completely. From the first few chords to the last unanswered calls for an enchore (unfortunately everybody wants to call it a day at some point) the concert was one great party. People were dancing and singing along during the songs and frenetically cheered for the band on stage and singing a melody line from the song “Perpetual”  (du-du-duu-dudududu) -  so when they ended their concert with this song the crowd was going crazy.

Seeing the expression on the musicians faces and the sparkling in their eyes during the show, I am quite sure, they enjoyed it as much as the audience.

A little annoying was one person, who seemed to take a video of the whole concert, which in turn made Ronan quite angry. Twice he demanded that guy to stop – maybe he did, maybe he didn’t – I don’t know. The guy was on the balcony.

After the concert, I went to the aftershow party at Dark Star club. The party was really nice. And the DJ was really good. He played EBM – electronic sounds whatever stuff and had a really nice playlist. The club itself is rather strange – I don’t know if I like it, yet. On the one hand it is decorated like a spaceship, with alien figures and metal and mirrors and the like and on the other hand it just looks like a plain entrance hall of a former business building which has been converted into a dance club. Strange combination and a very small club, too.

After the concert I noticed that there was not one single piece of Frozen Plasma merchandise but Solar Fake instead… Please don’t tell me I missed Solar Fake. Please.

I would really very much like to know how Ronan and the whole band would describe the Hannover show from their point of view. Really. VERY VERY MUCH. *curious* ^_^
