Piece Of My Heart

Oh, come on, come on, come on, come on!

Didn’t I make you feel like you were the only man -yeah!
Didn’t I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can ?
Honey, you know I did!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I’ve had enough,
But I’m gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.

I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby!
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, oh, have a!
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it if it makes you feel good,
Oh, yes indeed.

You’re out on the streets looking good,
And baby deep down in your heart I guess you know that it ain’t right,
Never, never, never, never, never, never hear me when I cry at night,
Babe, I cry all the time!
And each time I tell myself that I, well I can’t stand the pain,
But when you hold me in your arms, I’ll sing it once again.

I’ll say come on, come on, come on, come on and take it!
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby.
Oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah,
Oh, oh, have a!
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby,
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good.

I need you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it,
Take it!
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby!
oh, oh, break it!
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, c’mon now.
oh, oh, have a
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby.

I’ve always loved Zebra and considered them a severely underrated rock band. I first heard them on the radio when I first heard Who’s Behind the Door on Norfolk’s K-94 in 1983. I was instantly hooked

That debut album is pretty righteous from beginning to end. Randy Jackson has a great vocal range and is a solid guitar player. The album flows very well.

A year later they release No Tellin’ Lies which was not quite as strong of a release. They had some minor success with the slightlygoofy song Bears (worst video ever?). Sure, I like the song but it was a bit silly.

For me they struck gold again with their third album 3.V in 1986. I bought the cassette at Roses department store for $6.99 and was immediately hooked. It’s a very polished album and pretty radio friendly, but the hooks are there.

Zebra IV came out in 2003 and again they released another quality album. Highly recommended if you’re even mildly a fan.

I was fortunate enough to see the 3.V tour in 1986. I’ll never forget it. Cold rainy night…torrential rain even…Big Bill didn’t want to go out in the rain and get his hair messed up so i went alone. I already had really bad hair back then so it was no big deal to me. Plus it was $5! FIVE BUCKS! (Ren and Stimpy reference). The lineup Alcatrazz (post-Yngwie/Vai era), Rough Cutt (Duke Fame!) and Zebra headlining. I think there may have been 100 people there if that. It was at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA which held about 2000 I think. For some shows there they put the barricade up so only prople in the beer garden could stand in the area in front of the stage. This was one of those shows. So there I was wedged up in the front stage right corner between the speaker mains, the stage and the beer garden barricade. My buddy Kirshon was standing behind me and was the only other person there that I knew.

Alcatrazz came on and was quite possibly the most boring band I have ever seen. i swear I fell asleep standing up during their performance. Some squid woke me up. Then comes Rough Cutt supporting their Wants You! album. I had that cassette and their debut and liked them a lot so I was familiar with their material. They kicked ass. Royally. Amir Derakh was great. He’s a killer guitarist, plain and simple. They rocked from beginning to end and got a great response from a crowd that had no idea who they were. Then comes Zebra. Perfectly refined, in time, in tune. They played a seemingly flawless set and mixed up the harder stuff with some acoustic songs. Unfortunately they played a Zeppelin song or 2 but I suffered through it. It was a great show.

Years later (1996 I believe) by wife at the time and I went to the va Beach Amphitheatre to see the Virginia Symphony tribute to Led Zeppelin. Yes, I don’t like Zeppelin but Randy Jackson was fronting the band so I had to go. We got 4th row center and got there pretty early. of course I brought all of my Zebra CDs and Randy’s solo album CD. Before the show started, I saw a woman walking around on the stage and she obviously was someone “in charge”. So I left my seat and walked up to the stage and asked her if there was a way for me to meet Randy before or after the show. She looked at me for a second and just said, “Wait here.” Ten minutes later she came back out and said to come to the back stage gate after the show and Randy would come out. Eureka! During the show, Randy did a fine Robert Plan imitation. It was a fun show, Zep fan or not.

So afterwards my wife and I are waiting for about 20 minutes by the backstage gate and out comes Randy, freshly showered. I shook his hand, introduced my wife and me and talked with him for about a half hour. It was an afternoon show so no one seemed rushed to get out of there. I told him that I saw the 3.V tour and he said he remembered that particular show because of the rain and poor crowd attendance. he signed all my stuff and was very appreciative of my “fanboyness”. haha. He stated that I was the first person out of the 20 or so shows to recognize him and/or bring stuff to get signed. He was super cool.

In 2000 my former guitarist and I went up to Jaxx in Springfield, VA to see them. Moderate turnout and a great show. I got to meet Felix and Guy before the show and got permission to film it. The picture came out great. Unfortunately, something screwed up on the camera and no sound was recorded. I was pissed. I got to meet randy again afterwards and reminded him about the symphony gig from a few years prior. He remembered talking to us and asked where my “pretty little wife” was. I just said, “Ancient history, man.” It was cool seeing him and the band again. I hope to catch them again sometime. On the way home (3 hour drive), Reggie fell asleep…and so did I. He just happened to wake up right before me and yell. I woke up just in time to steer away from hitting the entrance wall to the Monitor-Merrimac Tunnel. Scary shit!

It’s unfortunate that they won’t allow their studio vids on YouTube.

‘He’ says:

· platform heels and stilettoes are a vertiginous health and safety risk
· Wearing a feather boa and a bipperty-bopperty hat to a works barbecue is considered to be a fire risk
· All those tattoos can cause anxiety and jealousy – especially amongst your less-well inked and less worthy colleagues
· Loud music can make the delicate bones in your ears vibrate uncontrollably until they explode
· Wearing make up can can cause serious esteem problems to those who live in a hall of mirrors
· Parading around in androgynous clothes can cause unwelcome gender mix-ups
· Wearing tight pants can cause infertility problems- unless the beast is frequently unleashed
· Hanging about in bars for excessively long periods can cause drowsiness and lethargy and even, eventually, unemployment
· Wearing cowboy boots to the office is fine but the spurs, bull-whips and bandoliers are now generally considered to be ‘offensive’
· Illegal sequin mine workers get a raw deal and are being exploited by glam gang-masters
· Wearing a black top hat in church is fine for Slash (when he is playing at a November wedding in the rain,) but it causes great offence at funerals

Et cetera Et Cetera Et cetera….

Don’t let the world governments get you down

Don’t worry about the churches having a right old moan. Ignore your boss, your ex, the nosy neighbour, your uppity older sister and all the folk down the Salvation Army hall …cos no one can stop you STOP YOU HAVING A GOO-OOD TIME!!!

Amir Derakh – Guitar
Chris Hager – Guitar
Matt Thorr – Bass
Dave Alford – Drums

Produced by: Tom Allom (Rough Cutt); Jack Douglas (Rough Cutt Wants You)

Wounded Bird have been doing reissues of acts from the 60s-80s for years and it’s a great thing, because they’re priced low and often, they’ll be 2-in-1 releases like this one. And no, I’m not getting anything from Wounded Bird for this, I just think it’s really cool what they do.

Anyway, I had been aware of Rough Cutt for years, but never heard’em until I found this little gem browsing the rock section at CD Universe. You wanna try out a band? 2 albums on one CD is a good way to do it. This is Rough Cutt’s entire studio catalog (outside of an EP and some demos), so this is even better than some compilation.

Paul Shortino, of course, would go on to temporarily take over as lead singer of Quiet Riot, after Kevin DuBrow was fired and eventually went solo. It’s easy to see why, on both of these albums, why he was chosen to sit in for DuBrow. Great pipes.

The music is pleasant, but a some of it is just generic 80s melodic hard rock. Some of it reminds me of what you might hear playing in the background of some 1980s teen comedy or horror movie or as the credits are rolling. There are great moments though. From the first album, “Take Her” is an awesome track and a great way to get the album going, “Dreamin’ Again” is a great song as well. I’m really into “Black Widow”, from the vocal delivery to the pace of the music, it sounds like something you’d hear from a Tony Martin-era Black Sabbath album.

Rough Cutt is definitely a, dare I say, cut above Rough Cutt Wants You (sometimes just title as Wants You!). Wants You is a bit more on the generic side and seems a bit more polished. “Night Cries Out (For You” is the best cut from the 2nd album and sounds like something Joe Cocker would sing.

There’s actually some strong producers behind each album. Tom Allom produced Judas Priest all throughout the 80s and Jack Douglas has done extensive work for Cheap Trick, Starz, Alice Cooper, John Lennon and even Aerosmith’s first five albums.

Also interesting to note is that guitarist Amir Derakh would later go on to find success as a guitarist for Orgy and Shortino now fronts a band called The Cutt (which is not a revamped Rough Cutt).

Highlights: “Take Her”, “Piece of My Heart”, “Dreamin’ Again”, “Black Widow”, “You Keep Breaking My Heart”, “Rock the USA”, “”Bad Reputation”, “Night Cries Out (For You)“

Leather Angel
November 25, 1983
Perkin’s Palace : Pasadena, CA

***
Part one of a five-part series that I am doing this week on local L.A. bands in the ‘80s that were opening acts on some big gigs at my favorite venue as a kid – Perkin’s Palace in Pasadena California.
***

First, a little background on the venue. The Raymond Theatre was a beautiful 2000 capacity theatre built in the 1920’s. Vaudeville shows, movie screenings and live plays were the original uses of the theatre. In 1979, the venue broke into the live concert market and the theatre became known as a live venue named Perkin’s Palace. An incredible list of artists have performed on the Perkin’s Palace stage : The Cure, Motley Crue, Phil Collins, Black Flag, Bad Religion, Depeche Mode, The Ramones, and many, many more.

Growing up as a teen, I went to a lot of amazing shows at Perkin’s Palace. Luckily for me it was only about 20 minutes from my home and I could usually talk my Mother or my pal Erik into driving to some of the early shows. The ticket prices were low and you always got a handful of L.A.’s best bands – handpicked by Gina Zamparelli, who had to be the greatest promoter in L.A. in the 80’s. When Gina’s name was on the flyer or on the ticket, my pals and I knew that every band, whether we had heard of them or not, were worth getting to the show early for.

Steeler was super-buzzing at the time. They had an incredible LP out on Shrapnel Records and the band was filled with talent. The openers for that night – Leather Angel, Rough Cutt and SIN were three of the coolest up and comers in town. SIN was the brainchild of bassist Rik Fox, who had just left Steeler to form his own band – there was some competitive energy that night. Rough Cutt had just been picked up by Wendy Dio (Ronnie’s wife) for management. Leather Angel was an all female heavy metal band, they really stood out in terms of Local Metal Bands in Los Angeles.

I first saw them as Obsession when they opened for Motley Crue at Perkin’s Palace the previous year. Motley had taken a liking to them and that helped to build their street cred in L.A. Soon after, legalities arose with another band using the same name and the girls were forced to rename the band to Leather Angel. The band was fantastic both live and on record. They kept up and played with the best of L.A.’s Metal acts – Ratt, Motley Crue, Steeler, Black & Blue, etc. Their EP, We Came To Kill, was a solid release with some local radio airplay. The record proved that this band was just not a bunch of good looking chicks, these girls could rock and they were serious about it.

[On a personal note - their manager, Keith Dyson, once tried to extort photos that I had taken of the band and threatened to take my mother’s home. I was barely 15 years years old when Keith Dyson threatened me, and I didn’t really know any better, I was intimidated and terrified. What kind of manager threatens a little kid with a camera? Keith, if are reading this…call me, call me collect…I am not a little kid anymore.]

Leather Angel later went through a handful of lineup changes and changed their name to Jaded Lady. Jaded Lady’s claim to fame was their appearance in Penelope Spheeris’ 1988 film, The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years.

Photographed with my trusty, smuggled in Canon AE-1 and a cheap, no name 70mm-210mm lens. Shot on Kodak negative film.
