I have just completed the last page I need to do for our Round Robin pages swap, the theme for this one was Fertile. Initially I had several ideas of how it might be portrayed, ranging from depicting the rich red volcanic soil of this area which is renowned for its fertility, to something about the pesky rabbits that seem to be multiplying at a great rate and are beginning to inhabit my garden, to something at the cellular level – but in the end, I did something completely different.  I love Poppies of all sorts, and grow some which self sow and multiply all over the garden, including the compost heap and my vegetable patch.  I also love the huge, pepper pot like, seed pods that develop, full of thousands of tiny seeds and for a long time have wanted to use them somehow in my textile work.  So here it is…..

I do hope that she likes it!  Now I shall pack it up with all the other lovely pages, and post it to Mary on Norfolk Island.

Your might remember this……it is the wrap around cover I made at the beginning of the year, when I began an exchange of pages for a textile book with nine other stitchers in Australia, New Zealand and America?  Since then it has been travelling to each of the other people, who added a page before sending it on its way again – today it arrived home, and I did a little inward cheer as I picked it up from the Post Office.  My theme was Arboreal, and although I could see a photograph each month as a page was completed, nothing compares with holding them in your hand and actually seeing the textures, colours, stitching and care with which they were made, for yourself – the photos do not do them justice.

This one was made by Annette, and was based on a photo taken in the Queensland rain forest of a moss covered vine.

This one is by Glenys Mann – the cords represent fallen logs, and the button, the presence of man.

This one is by Mary who lives on Norfolk Island and is made of many different hand dyed bits of lace.

I think all the pages are great, and my book is a beautiful collection of textile arts.  I’m very happy to have all the pages where they belong, inside that cover I made so many months ago -   they will be a treasured reminder of this year’s stitching, and some friendships made online with people I am never likely to meet.

Una collana “fuori dai generi”. Un percorso letterario e civile alla ricerca di nuovi modi di raccontare. Uno strumento per costruire – daSud – un immaginario nuovo sul Mezzogiorno. Si chiama Corsari, è la nuova avventura di Round Robin Editrice, nata in collaborazione con l’associazione daSud onlus e diretta da Danilo Chirico.

CORSARI

Corsari è innanzitutto un’ambizione: essere strumento per la (ri)costruzione di un nuovo modo di immaginare, pensare, praticare il Sud. E’ un progetto culturale fondato sul gusto del blitz creativo, un luogo di scritti irregolari e irrituali, che si lascia attraversare e modificare. È il ritratto incompleto delle storie, le persone, i luoghi e i luoghi comuni del Mezzogiorno. Corsari è passione civile e avventura letteraria, rilettura delle tradizioni e superamento delle incrostazioni. Corsari è letteratura e testi teatrali, iconografia e blog, racconti e reportage, ritratti e saggi, lettere e invettive, comunicazione non formale e sperimentazione, rotture e interruzioni, stop e ripartenze. Corsari è una collana tascabile, è un progetto che serve a comporre, voce dopo voce, un inedito vocabolario di parole e immagini per descrivere un Sud alla ricerca di sé.

LA CASA EDITRICE

La Round Robin nasce nell’autunno del 2004 dall’idea di giovani studenti universitari con l’idea di costituire un nuovo soggetto indipendente in grado di entrare nel mondo dell’informazione, con un giornale on line, rivistonline.com, e dell’editoria con la pubblicazioni di romanzi e saggi di giovani promesse della letteratura italiana e straniera. La Round Robin, con sede a Roma, s’è costituita come società editrice nel maggio del 2005. Da allora, grazie alla produzione di un catalogo con titoli di narrativa, saggistica e graphic novel, si sta affermando come una delle più originali e interessanti realtà editoriali. Con il fumetto Don Peppe Diana – Per amore del mio popolo ha vinto il Premio Siani 2009.

Nasce in Calabria, nel 2005, con queste ambizioni l’associazione antimafie daSud onlus. Nasce dalla volontà di un gruppo di donne e uomini che sono partiti dal Mezzogiorno, ma non intendono lasciarlo nelle mani di ‘ndrangheta, camorra, cosa nostra e sacra corona unita. E che, per questa ragione, mettono in piedi percorsi di comunicazione, arte, cultura, memoria, identità e ricercano, attorno a progetti concreti, alleanze possibili tra cittadini, intellettuali, artisti e buona politica.

Calvisi ha scritto una trilogia: Maledizione del sommo poeta, Il geometra sbagliato, Il Principe di Persia. Maledizione del sommo poeta cambia completamente se, dopo averlo letto, si legge Il geometra sbagliato e si ripensa il primo libro alla luce del secondo. Perché Maledizione del sommo poeta è un libro che lì per lì si prende a ridere: perché la figura del visionario, del rimastone, del tipo che si fa i viaggi, ottiene, come risposta automatica della cultura diffusa, il riso. Ma poi la lettura del Geometra sbagliato agisce retroattivamente sul lettore: ci si vergogna di aver riso. Perché ci si rende conto che in realtà non c’è alcuna differenza – nell’universo di Calvisi – tra la fenomenologia del rimastone e quella della persona affetta da disagio mentale, cambia solo lo schema culturale di riferimento, nel primo caso la reazione è il riso, nel secondo la tristezza e la compassione. È vero che, man mano che si cresce, i rimastoni fanno sempre meno ridere e mettono sempre più malinconia. Ma c’è qualcosa che rimane, anche solo a livello di consuetudine sociale, di aspettative altrui alla fine del racconto degli aneddoti del paesello, che si fatica sempre a eliminare del tutto. Ecco, forse bisogna pensarci. Perché poi tu leggi Maledizione del sommo poeta e pensi che insomma, è un libro, è fatto apposta, è fatto apposta perché tu rida, nessun matto è stato preso in giro per scrivere questo libro, niente di tutto ciò è successo. Allora ridi. E poi, quando leggi il secondo e capisci qual è il tema della trilogia, pensi: cacchio, non c’era niente ridere. E allora pensi a tutte le altre volte che non c’è niente da ridere, pensi che non c’è da ridere nemmeno per scherzo, nemmeno dell’idea platonica.

Perché poi in Calvisi non c’è alcuna immagina romantica del matto. Il matto non è un genio, il matto non è oracolare, il matto ha anche visioni grette, provinciali, imprecise, deragliate dall’immaginario più banale: Dante al reparto reggae del negozio di dischi che “ha i rasta” (cioè i dreadlock) e si fa una canna.

Da Principe di Persia:

E così siamo montati a cavallo, anzi sono montati Geeva e gli uomini in nero. Sulla groppa di questi fantastici animali, che la mia vista non può contenere con un’unica occhiata, galoppiamo verso la destinazione definitiva. Sono ripiegato su me stesso dentro lo zaino che Geeva porta sulla schiena. La corsa dei cavalli si distende tra i sentieri di una foresta dove la terra è fatta di terra, e l’acqua del fiume non è altro che acqua, e tutto è quello che è, solamente quello che è.

Gli animali fantastici che la vista non può contenere con un’unica occhiata mi hanno ricordato la Poetica di Aristotele, è la stessa immagine che Aristotele usa quando dice che la narrazione deve poter essere abbracciata da un solo sguardo della memoria, che il racconto deve essere fatto in modo che il lettore se lo ricordi tutto, mentre legge. Allora ho pensato che, sempre nella Poetica, Aristotele dice che la causalità del racconto deve essere più forte di quella della realtà, in cui tra molti eventi non c’è concatenazione. Nella trama no, nella trama gli eventi devono essere collegati da una causalità forte. Invece il Principe di Persia dice che “la terra è fatta di terra, e l’acqua del fiume non è altro che acqua, e tutto è quello che è, solamente quello che è”. Calvisi registra la realtà, le sue narrazioni sono piene di azioni che non si possono ricordare con un solo sguardo della memoria perché la causalità è debole, perché Calvisi riporta la realtà (anche se è una realtà che ha inventato lui) esattamente come è, con la sua frammentarietà, la sua causalità debole, la contingenza degli eventi. Non è detto che questo sia un bene per il lettore, cognitivamente è abbastanza pesante e dispersivo, ma sembra un’operazione concettuale e mi sembra interessante.
Se nella causalità forte della narrazione noi, per un patto tra autore e lettore, vediamo l’imitazione della realtà, quando in realtà la realtà è fatta di contingenze decisamente più slegate, e se nella follia, rispetto alla realtà, noi vediamo una minor capacità di comprendere i legami tra le cose che popolano la realtà, allora un modo per rappresentare la follia nella narrazione è quello di registrare la realtà: l’effetto, stante il patto tra autore e lettore, è quello di assistere alla visione del mondo di un folle, con un focus d’attenzione che si sposta continuamente su cose che non hanno una stretta correlazione con la coerenza del racconto, ma come se ce l’avessero (perché è un racconto e ce lo aspettiamo).

Principe di Persia, poi, almeno nella prima parte, è narrato come un romanzo d’avventura, solo che il protagonista è matto. Anche la parte persiana, quella presa di peso dal videogioco, è narrata come un romanzo d’avventura, ma accade come un videogioco: nel videogioco la grafica è funzione dell’ambientazione, ma l’azione non è correlata in modo forte alla trama, si può pensare anzi che la trama di un videogioco è concepita come pretesto per stressare l’abilità manuale del videogiocatore; anche le sottotrame, i piccoli schemi, le microsequenze, sono relativamente libere dalla trama generale: quindi se l’ambientazione dà atmosfera, spesso, di contro, le azioni non danno vita a una struttura narrativa coerente o anche solo interessante, evolvente: la prima parte Principe di Persia narra con il piglio di un romanzo d’avventura accadimenti che hanno una non-trama da videogioco, e vi regna tutta la plurivocità e multidirezionalità – che si risolve nell’immobilità – del disagio mentale, una frenesia circolare, senza futuro.

Nel Principe di Persia, rispetto agli altri due romanzi, della trilogia, il protagonista è più attivo, si lascia meno vivere, interagisce con il contesto in maniera più decisa, dà addirittura vita a una rivolta. Filippo La Porta, in riferimento al Geometra sbagliato, scrive che la malattia nega l’altro e la sua diversità, più precisamente scrive di immaginazione masturbatoria, autoreferenziale, che nega l’altro e la sua diversità. Noi, in ambito morale, biasimiamo chi sente poco o male, trattiamo l’iposensibilità come fosse un atto volontario, imputiamo una colpa, non ci viene mai in mente che essere iposensibile possa essere un handicap. Mi pare che invece Il geometra sbagliato riesca a fare questo: a portare empatia e compassione verso uno che, per dire, non riconosce la moglie e l’assimila ad altre donne. Di questo personaggio, e di quello di Maledizione del sommo poeta, nei due romanzi c’è tutta la passività. Invece, nel Principe di Persia, il protagonista è attivo, ma è talmente attivo da trovare una sua via d’uscita. Quindi nei romanzi di Calvisi c’è o la compassione per una situazione involontaria (Sommo poeta, Geometra), o l’apprezzamento per una capacità di autoredenzione spinta dalla volontà (Principe di Persia). Calvisi sembra dire che dove c’è una deficienza del sentire non c’è volontà (Sommo poeta, Geometra), e dove c’è volontà vedrai che c’è una via d’uscita, dove c’è volontà c’è redenzione (Principe di Persia), perché il male è un handicap non una colpa.

C’è un’ambiguità nel Principe di Persia, nella figura demiurgica di Mechner, il programmatore del videogioco, e nell’incontro tra il protagonista e il demiurgo Mechner. Nell’ultima parte il protagonista sembra essere per la prima volta cosciente di essere in un videogioco. Dopo un crescendo, nel quale il protagonista esce dal videogioco e si ritrova nel reale, il protagonista torna nel videogioco ma rendendosi conto che è un videogioco: ha la lucidità – per la prima volta – di comprendere dove si trova. A quel punto viene bersagliato, minato nella mente, c’è un deragliamento linguistico e uno si chiede “ma non era arrivato alla lucidità”? Poi capisci che c’è un’attività che non dipende da lui, è un’attività di cui la sua mente è vittima, e appare il padre eterno, Mechner, la matrice: è lui che lo sta attaccando. Alla fine Mechner lascia al protagonista la possibilità di scegliere di quale memoria (reale) vuole vivere, da dove ricominciare. Mi pare ambiguo questo demiurgo che ti chiude in un videogame e poi compare come un guardiano di fine ultimo livello e ti lascia la possibilità di vivere nel reale, ma a pensarci bene è il videogioco stesso che è fatto così: se porti a termine la missione hai vinto, sei libero. La volontà del protagonista, che si muove autonomamente e in rivolta, è premiata con la grazia del demiurgo Mechner.

I’ve been to Mont Saint Michel during our high school’s student exchange to France. It was great there.

i spent a bit of time working on my book for the pulp redux collaboration today, and took better photos.  you can read more about it there and see larger photos, but here are a few peeks.

the title of my book is “the museum of forgotten things”.  some of these things are obvious, some are not… to anyone other than me.

page one: the frozen charlotte page.  the pearly moony piece is from my sweet friend debs, as is the lacy background.  much of the other fabric is from my sweet friend lisa.  i loved that i could include things from both of them, particularly because they are two of the amazing ladies i’m doing this international altered book collaboration with.

the little frame piece is painted, covered in beeswax, then painted again, and the backing that the charlotte is on is a mica sheet.  that part is double-hinged so you can see/read the charlotte poem beneath.

page two is about a lady… you can read about her in a previous post here.  the photo of the man is not the one that is supposed to be there — i lost him and replace him when i get the book back late next year.  i guess it doesn’t really matter what guy is in there though since he’s dead anyway, but i liked the other dude’s creepy mustache. the stripey burned fabric is a piece of his shirt and blah, blah — you’ll get it when you read everything as it all pertains.

page four is annoying me because the top opens, then the middle opens and that means four times more work BUT it’s fun and i like it.  it tells a story without words… that’s kind of dark but very personal for me as well.  i’m already sharing too much.  (she is from one of my collage sheets — i cheated)

this is an old side view of the book.  i need to take a new one.  between every paper-page for everyone will be a foam core page for extra play room.  all pages will have the little loops and sticks (7 total) and i’ll, of course, stitch everything together once i get home.  i think it will be a foot thick by then (30.something centimeters for those of you who don’t know what a foot is).  ((that is an ongoing semi-inside joke — i’m not being a bitch, promise.))

VMware vSphere 4 gives us the ability to actively use multiple iSCSI paths to reach a single LUN. You will need to use vSphere Client, your iSCSI storage management tools, and an ESX command-line interface (such as ssh, RCLI or vSphere Management Assistant) to get it working. This procedure can be used to add up to eight iSCSI paths per datastore, provided each path uses a unique physical NIC and that each physical NIC has a corresponding NIC on the iSCSI SAN side. In other words, setting up more paths on the VMware side than your iSCSI SAN can actually accommodate would be pointless.

This tutorial assumes that you are familiar with vSphere Client and can find your way around. Read on beyond the break.

The Procedure

This entire procedure must be repeated for each ESX host you want to set up iSCSI multipathing on. If you have a clustered VMware environment, you should set up multipathing on each node in your cluster. Each VMkernel interface you create for the purposes of iSCSI multipathing will need an IP address, so it’s important to make sure you have enough available IP addresses in the appropriate subnet(s) before proceeding.

For convenience, here’s the procedure summary, with links to the tutorial sections.

1. Create the vmkernel interfaces
2. Use your iSCSI management tools to allow these new interfaces to connect
3. Configure the software iSCSI initiator to use the new vmkx iSCSI ports
4. Configure Round Robin path selection for all iSCSI datastores
5. Reboot the ESX host

I. Create the vmkernel interfaces

The first step is to create at least two VMkernel ports, bound to unique physical NICs. This is done in the vSphere Client.

1. Select the Networking view from the ESX host’s Configuration tab.
2. Find the vSwitch that is connected to the physical NICs you’d like to use for iSCSI multipathing and click the Properties link.
3. Click the Add button, select VMkernel and click Next.
4. Give a descriptive network label. I recommend “vmkx-iSCSI”, where x is the actual port number. I’ll be using this naming convention during this tutorial. (If you only have one existing VMkernel port, then it is vmk0. The next one you create will be vmk1. The one after that will be vmk2, etc.) Do not enable VMotion on this port. Click Next.
5. Enter the port’s IP address and subnet mask, then click Next and Finish.
   
6. Select the new port from the list in the vSwitch Properties window, click the Edit button, and then select the NIC Teaming tab.
7. Enable Override vSwitch failover order, and then select one vmnic to be in the Active Adapters section and move the rest to the Unused Adapters section. (Make sure you choose a different vmnic for each vmkx-iSCSI port!) Click OK.
   
8. Repeat steps 3 – 7 for each additional you wish to create, then close the vSwitch Properties window.

II. Use your iSCSI management tools to allow these new interfaces to connect

Since all environments are different, I can’t tell you how to do this step. Our iSCSI setup uses IP address access lists, so in this section, I would add the IP addresses of the VMkernel interfaces I added in the previous section to the access list.

III. Configure the software iSCSI initiator to use the new vmkx iSCSI ports

1. In vSphere Client, select the Storage Adapters view from the ESX host’s Configuration tab and note the iSCSI Software Adapter device name. It’s vmhba33 in our environment.
2. Using a command-line interface to the ESX host, add a vmk adapter to the software iSCSI initiator with this command:

   esxcli swiscsi nic add -n vmkx -d vmhba33

3. Repeat step 2 for each vmkx interface you created in section I.
4. Back in vSphere Client, right-click on the iSCSI Software Adapter and choose Rescan to discover the additional paths to your storage. After a short wait, you should see in the Details section the available paths multiply by the number of VMkernel ports you added. E.g. If you are attached to 16 datastores and you added two iSCSI paths to them, your paths count should increase from 16 to 32.

NOTE: It is common for the path number to be incorrect at this stage. In my case, it showed 48 paths — which is the original 16 plus the 32 new ones. Rebooting the ESX host will fix this, but you can save the reboot until the entire process is complete.

IV. Configure Round Robin path selection for all iSCSI datastores

To actually take advantage of these multiple iSCSI paths, you need to set your datastores to use the Round Robin path selection method so all paths can be active. The following procedure must be completed for each iSCSI datastore your ESX host accesses.

1. In vSphere Client, select the Storage view from the ESX host’s Configuration tab.
2. Select one of your iSCSI datastores and click the Properties link.
3. Click the Managed Paths button.
   
4. Select Round Robin (VMware) from the Path Selection menu and click Close.
   
5. Click Close, and then wait for the task to finish.
6. Repeat steps 2 – 6 for each iSCSI datastore.

V. Reboot the ESX host

If your environment is clustered, rebooting an individual host shouldn’t be too much trouble. After the reboot, the correct number of paths to your datastores should be reported.

Yes, I know I’m slow.  Just can’t seem to get in gear, too much to do and not enough energy.

Today’s post will be the reveal of the panel challenges.  The challenge was that everyone supplied a pre-printed panel, pillow size, wallhanging, etc…..    Then envelopes containing clues joined the panels as they were prepared for the round robin.  When a participant received a panel package, they would open an envelope and add their part to the project.  Some of the clues consisted of:  four patch, stars, holiday, embellish, block of choice, wild card and even a chance to skip that month or draw again.  Those are only a few of the clues.  The part of the challenge that took the pressure off, was that you didn’t have to do all four sides of a panel and the clues were only suggestions and could be loosely interpreted, for which I am thankful and will elaborate later.  As always, you can click on the picture to embiggen and it will open in a new window.

The first panel I received was Cindy’s, and it was a pretty panel but very dark, so I did 9 patches in the corners and lighter fabric along top and sides.

I’ve lost my list, but I’m trying to remember the order in which I received the panels.  I know that Jan’s came next.  Jan’s came early in the challenge when I was having a patch of health problems and I could only muster up 9 patches again.  Originally, I had planned to do them down the side and across the bottom, but such is the way of best laid plans.  Looking back on Jan’s panel after going through the rounds, I like the blocks on just one side.

I think Pam’s came next.  On Pam’s I drew the clue, ” piping or flange” .  When I received the quilt a flange wouldn’t have worked because it would have covered up the points of the previously added blocks.  So I opened up the seams around the panel and added a blue flange.

Next was Marilyn’s.  When I received the panel it had a lot going on and needed a calm spot, so I added a border of various green squares.  Now this is where the ability to intrepet the clue in your own way came in handy.  On Jan’s and Marilyn’s panels I drew the clue “Holiday”, so given that their panels were Christmas panels, anything I added would fit the clue.

About this time the docs figured out what my problem was, and with the new meds I started feeling better, the concentration improved and the old muse even returned.   When Cathy’s panel arrived I stared at it for a long time, my clue was “block of choice”.  The fabrics were bright, and again there was a lot going on.   As I stared at the fabric I kept seeing little swirls and dots in the print of the panel, so I decided to put dots in the border.  The red background of the border drew out the red/oranges in the panel and calmed it down a bit, then I added the reverse applique circles in a waving vs straight line.  The fabrics for the circles all have dots or swirls on them.

For Colleen’s panel I drew the clue “feathers”.  After looking at the work on the panel so far, I knew it had to be applique across the bottom.  So I decided to do roosters, but needed something else to make it work.  Then I discovered the perfect fabric in the ones Colleen sent along with the panel (Oh, I forgot to tell you that we could send up to the equivalent of 2 yds fabric with the panel).  Anyway, the fabric I discovered was a basketweave print in yellows and golds, which when turned in a 45º direction looks like ears of corn.

Then came Carol Ann’s panel.  When I opened the package and put the panel on the design wall, I thought “This is finished, what am I going to do?”  Then when I opened my clue, it was “4 patch”.  Here is where the loose interpretation of the clue came in handy again.  The panel itself, the buffalo strip, the arrowhead, and the feather strip are each a patch, there’s your 4 patch.

Jean’s panel was the last one I received.  When I opened up the panel, to me the center panel was lost in all of the reds and light areas.  At the top and bottom of the panel were blank light areas that were ripe for applique.  I decided to do the little cabin on top and the bear below.  I started in trying to applique directly on to this large project and quickly discovered that it wasn’t going to work.  After trying to figure out a way to accomplish the stitching on such a large piece, I finally came to the conclusion that I would have to remove those blank strips, do the applique, and then sew the strips back in.

Finally, after many months, I got to see my finished panel and I am so happy with the way it turned out.  The fan on the left side has lines drawn for the fan panels, and I will do some type of embroidery to make them stand out.  I love the bamboo strip that Jean did to the right of the panel, from a distance it looks like part of the print.

I libri pubblicati da Round Robin, neonata casa editrice romana, sono belli da vedere e da toccare. Vediamo un po’ come se la cavano con i contenuti.

Mi sono trovato a leggere Chiuso per turno di Massimo Zanettini, giovane consulente informatico parmigiano che qui si cimenta con il suo primo romanzo. Che sia parmigiano lo capiamo piuttosto bene: storia ambientata a Parma con un protagonista che ama Parma e che con tutto quello che gli capita non smette mai di pensare e di riferirsi a Parma.

Michelangelo gestisce un ristorante, è figlio di un cuoco e la sua famiglia è dedita alla ristorazione da generazioni. Manco a dirlo è un ciccione e la sua più grande paura è la frugalità. Ma, se tutti ci immaginiamo i ristoratori ciccioni come degli omaccioni bonaccioni e gioviali, amici di tutti, dei grossi orsi dal cuore d’oro, Michelangelo non è niente di tutto ciò. È fondamentalmente una persona sola. La sua bulimia alimentare cozza nettamente con la sua anoressia emotiva.

La sua vita è scandita dai silenzi e le cose non dette. Incomunicabilità con il padre che muore lasciando un vuoto nella sua vita. Incomunicabilità con la madre che muore lasciando un vuoto nella sua vita. Incomunicabilità con la fidanzata Renata di cui non conosce i desideri più profondi, e che poi muore, manco a dirlo, lasciando un vuoto nella sua vita. Incomunicabilità che vuole essere scavalcata con un viaggio a Zanzibar consigliatogli da nientepopodimenoché… Sandokan! Roba da non crederci, ma sì, è proprio lui, la tigre di Mompracem, che si rivela essere una delle trovate meglio riuscite del romanzo, insieme a certi spunti d’ironia cui è impossibile sottrarre una risata. Fatto sta che, una volta in Africa, Michelangelo resta bloccato per cinque giorni in un villaggio sperduto nel bel mezzo del nulla. Paradossalmente le uniche persone con cui riesce ad entrare in contatto sono proprio gli indigeni di questo villaggio a migliaia di chilometri di distanza dalla sua cara vecchia Parma. Ma presto dovrà tornare a casa e non vi farà più ritorno.

Ecco il punto. Questo è un romanzo che non porta da nessuna parte (se non a Parma). Ma forse è proprio lì che vuole arrivare; non a Parma, intendo, ma da nessuna parte. Ci sono una tensione e una speranza di fondo che non vengono mai soddisfatte, e così devono rimanere.

Come quando sei con la tua ragazza, o con i tuoi amici, e senti parlare di un ristorante dalle parti di Parma dove cucinano da Dio, specialità anolini in brodo, e tu è da settimane che hai una voglia inspiegabile di anolini col brodo, perciò decidi all’istante di partire. Sali in macchina, è da pazzi, così senza organizzare nulla, ma prendi parti vai, guidi per ore e poi arrivi. Il ristorante è chiuso. Salta tutto, la tua giornata è rovinata. Potresti cercarne un altro aperto, ma non ne vale la pena, ti eri già costruito un castello di aspettative che certamente verrebbe disatteso. Non sarebbe la stessa cosa. Puoi tornare a casa, ma dopo tutto quello che hai fatto per arrivare fino a lì ti farebbe incazzare ancora di più. Allora stai dritto in piedi di fronte al ristorante ad osservare quel cartello che laconicamente sancisce la fine di tutto: “Chiuso per turno”. Potresti stare lì per ore ad osservarlo e immaginare come sarebbe stato quel bel piatto di anolini. E allora stai lì a fissarlo senza pensare a niente, tanto è andato tutto a puttane e tu non hai mica fretta.

• Round robin (default): This policy attempts to evenly distribute storage traffic to all available processing paths.
• Fail over only: This policy designates one active (primary) path to the storage resource; the remaining paths are assigned to a standby role. If the remaining paths are engaged for active storage, they will attempt to come online with a round robin policy until one is available.
• Round robin with subset: This policy runs round robin on active paths and has standby paths that are available via round-robin if the active paths fail.
• Least queue depth: This policy attempts to distribute loads based on I/O requests and the associated queue length. The round robin policy simply processes each request equally, with no regard to the load associated with the I/O task on the path.
• Weighted paths: This policy designates a path to have a low number (priority) to a path

Si fa sempre più pressante, dal punto di vista di una piccola casa editrice come la nostra, un discorso integrato – organico – sull’eventuale necessità di proporre i nostri testi anche in forma digitale. Di consentire cioè ai nostri lettori – anche a voi che state leggendo questo post – di poter scaricare i nostri libri direttamente dal sito, pagandoli molto meno che in libreria (i prezzi ragionevolmente oscillerebbero tra i 4 e i 5 €), e di poterli quindi leggere per mezzo dei cosiddetti e-book (cerco di essere comprensibile anche a tutti quanti non conoscano perfettamente i termini della questione: si tratta di quei dispositivi portatili sui quali è possibile scaricare e leggere migliaia di libri contemporaneamente, dispositivi che riproducono la pagina su uno schermo non retro-illuminato – diverso da quello del computer per intenderci – pensato per simulare l’effetto carta e per non stancare lo sguardo durante la lettura).

Il fenomeno degli e-book-reader è già molto diffuso negli Stati Uniti, dove anche grandi giornali come il New York Times dispongono e incoraggiano i lettori a servirsi della versione digitale del quotidiano. Al di là degli innegabili vantaggi che la penetrazione degli e-book garantirebbe a livello di eco-sostenibilità (si pensi al risparmio di carta cui si andrebbe incontro anche solo se il fenomeno fosse ‘limitato’ all’ambito giornalistico), quello che mi preme proporre in questo post è un dibattito interno ed esterno ai membri della stessa Round Robin sull’eventuale impiego dell’evoluzione digitale da parte nostra (scrivo a titolo personale, la casa editrice a riguardo non ha preso al momento alcuna risoluzione).

Più diffusamente l’argomento e-book-reader è trattato in un articolo di Antonio Tombolini recentemente rilanciato da Nazione Indiana, copio qui sotto due delle idee che suggerisce Tombolini:

3 – un’idea per gli editori, anzi due: la prima, rilasciate subito tutto il vostro catalogo in formato ePub, cribbio, cosa state ancora aspettando? E se avete il fegato per farlo, senza DRM, ché tanto sappiamo già tutti che tra due anni, forse meno, saremo lì a toglierli (noi di Simplicissimus vi suggeriamo SBF STEALTH, con i Social DRM, col nostro tool di watermarking, che consente una personalizzazione dell’ebook aggiungendo sul frontespizio del libro un vero e proprio ex-libris digitale, col nome e cognome dell’acquirente); se però non ne avete il fegato, metteteci pure i DRM (tanto tra due anni, forse meno, li toglierete), e rilasciate subito ’sto benedetto catalogo! Seconda idea, smettetela di dire agli autori che il vostro ruolo non morirà mai perché siete voi a dare autorevolezza ai loro libri appiccicandoci il vostro brand. Già oggi nessun lettore cerca un libro in base al marchio dell’editore (ma semmai autore, titolo, argomento, prezzo… tutto tranne che l’editore!). Concentratevi invece in quello che era il vero mestiere dell’editore, e di cui ci sarà sempre più bisogno nell’epoca dell’abbondanza digitale: la ricerca e scoperta di talenti nuovi, e la loro cura, offrendo piattaforme di scrittura innovative, in grado di dare all’autore la padronanza di tutte le possibilità che la rete offre fin dalla ideazione del suo libro, offrendo piattaforme ricche di interazione e condivisione diretta coi lettori, … imparando insomma un nuovo-vecchio mestiere: quello di padroneggiare la tecnologia per cavarne tutti i tool, gli attrezzi del mestiere, più adatti a coltivare i talenti di un autore e il suo rapporto coi lettori.

8 – un’idea per i lettori: smettetela di fare i bambini capricciosi, ah ma vuoi mettere la carta e l’inchiostro e il profumo… tutte balle, il 95% della carta stampata che maneggiate fa schifo, è stampata male, puzza, vi sporca le dita, i caratteri sono troppo piccoli e da una pagina vedete in trasparenza quella successiva. E pesa. E… insomma, piantatela: date soddisfazione al vostro feticismo spendendo dei bei soldoni in qualche realmente bella edizione cartacea, e correte a comprarvi un ebook reader, e cominciate a rompere le scatole a librai ed editori perché si decidano a pubblicare tutti i loro libri anche in formato ebook. Cosa ne otterrete facendo così? Che leggerete di più, come, guarda un po’, da quando c’è il lettore mp3, ascoltate più musica.

Al di là delle considerazioni personali di Tombolini (io per esempio mi fido, eccome!, del marchio di alcuni editori) le sue valutazioni meritano un approfondito dibattito. Dovremmo rendere disponibile il nostro catalogo in forma digitale? Se sì dovremmo proteggere i singoli file tramite dei dispositivi (i DRM) che ne rendano difficoltosa (non certo impossibile) la riproducibilità? Oppure dovremmo rilasciarli, come suggerisce l’autore dell’articolo, senza alcuna protezione, tanto se qualcuno volesse clonarli e renderli disponibili, che ne so, su eMule potrebbe comunque farlo – senza contare che una trasmissione pirata dei nostri testi oltretutto ci garantirebbe una discreta forma di pubblicità a costo zero (sinceramente io mi sentirei lusingato se trovassi un nostro titolo ‘piratato’ in rete). La questione è articolata e complessa.

Per quanto mi riguarda io non solo pubblicherei il nostro catalogo in forma digitale, ma cercherei di farne delle belle edizioni (magari personalizzate) e non mi preoccuperei di bloccare i file tramite i dispositivi DRM. Perché? Perché, come dicevo sopra, se qualcuno li piratasse più che altro ci farebbe pubblicità, in secondo luogo perché bloccarli tramite i dispositivi DRM al momento ridurrebbe il pubblico dei potenziali lettori di testi digitali al numero (in Italia davvero esiguo) dei possessori degli e-book reader (capaci di decrittare i DRM), mentre rilasciando i testi in una qualche forma di PDF saremmo da subito in grado di proporci al pubblico di tutti coloro i quali sono in possesso di un pc, di tutti coloro i quali siano insomma già in grado di leggere questo articolo. Non male eh? Concludo con un’ultima considerazione: io non credo che la diffusione degli e-book sia un grosso rischio per l’editoria come la conosciamo noi, credo che ancora per lungo tempo i due mercati (cartaceo e digitale) continueranno a convivere e saranno di fatto due scenari per lo più paralleli e non in vera concorrenza, anzi, se ne saremo capaci, in grado di sostenersi l’un l’altro, di fare sistema. Per essere chiaro: se io da un libro fossi solo incuriosito sarei probabilmente disposto a spendere 4 o 5 € per acquistarlo in versione digitale, mentre invece forse nel dubbio eviterei di acquistarlo a prezzo pieno in formato cartaceo…

As for me, for the first time yesterday in two whole weeks I felt closer to being back to normal healthwise, and even managed to get a fair bit of housework done during the day.  I’ve continued to potter around today to try to get the lounge back to normal, so hopefully tomorrow I will just have to run around with the vacuum cleaner and mop, and finishing cleaning the bathroom.  Then Monday it’s back to work – and unfortunately, being a week behind now, I will probably end up working late most nights – gotta love deadlines!

As you may have worked out by now, I opted for Mum not to come over – my first reaction to Mum’s suggestion was that I was worried she would catch this dratted flu bug, and comments received confirmed that that was the right decision to make.  As much as I would have loved to have been pampered for a couple of days, I’m really not much company when I’m sick and prefer to be away from people, so it seemed a lot of money to spend for a couple of days being housemaid!

Anyway, time to walk away from the computer again and get a few more things tidied away while my washing is in the machine – I may even bake a batch of muffins tomorrow ready to start eating healthily next week!  Hopefully next time I post I’ll have enough progress in my Just Nan piece to warrant a photo

Roma, 21 ott 2009 - Angelo Calvisi è il protagonista e anche l’autore di una storia a tratti surreale ma anche molto vera, che rispecchia il malessere dell’uomo contemporaneo, la sua difficoltà ad affermarsi, ad essere qualcuno, a lasciare un segno nella vita. La storia di cui stiamo parlando è quella raccontata in Maledizione del Sommo Poeta, edito da Round Robin (www.roundrobineditrice.it). Il libro è il secondo volume di una trilogia che parte con Il Geometra Sbagliato e si concluderà con Il Principe di Persia (che verrà, tra l’altro, presentato venerdì 23 ottobre alle 21.30 all’Altroquando, in via del governo vecchio, 80).

“Maledizione del sommo poeta” è la storia di un 35enne ossessivo e mentalmente instabile, perseguitato dal desiderio di lasciare un segno nella letteratura, proprio come il Sommo Poeta Dante Alighieri, la cui ingombrante presenza pesantemente si impone nella vita del protagonista dalla più tenera età. Da allora in poi la vita di Angelo Calvisi diventa compromessa per sempre, oppressa dal senso di sconfitta generato da quella volontà continuamente delusa. E la maledizione di Angelo Calvisi è quella di crescere rimanendo però sempre un po’ bambino e un po’ inetto, di non riconoscere i propri limiti, di volersi elevare al di sopra delle masse, non rassegnandosi all’anonimato, senza arrendersi all’idea di non essere in grado di farlo. Tra l’altro il protagonista deve fare i conti con tutta una serie di personaggi che affollano la sua mente dialogando tra loro e intralciando le sue azioni quotidiane. Su tutti campeggia il Sommo Poeta, che ritroviamo appollaiato sul camino a ricordare costantemente al protagonista la sua inadeguatezza, a fumare marijuana o a giocare a ruba bandiera con la propria cuffietta. Divertentissimo l’abbassamento grottesco di questo personaggio, eterno compagno di viaggio del protagonista e l’ironia con cui è giocata tutta la narrazione che si snoda entro un arco temporale di tre giorni, essenzialmente al di dentro della mente del protagonista, che tenta di far fronte agli eventi, spesso non riuscendo a gestirli, trascinandosi nella vita, lasciandosi vivere passivamente preparandosi al meglio ad attendere la morte. Il tutto in uno stile veramente spassoso, che da subito coinvolge il lettore fino a farlo scoppiare dalle risate di fronte alla pagina.

L’andamento sintattico sgrammaticato ricalca esattamente i ritmi e le strutture del parlato e dà vita ad una serie di vicende esilaranti che riflettono perfettamente il mondo caotico e pieno di fantasia del personaggio protagonista.

I flussi di coscienza, le ossessioni, i dialoghi con gli strampalati personaggi, le vicende che non si comprendono quanto siano vere o finte creano un impasto veramente variegato di immagini e colori che ci fanno calare in un turbine mentale del tutto diverso dal solito modo di guardare il mondo. Il romanzo nella sua brevità e scorrevolezza è del tutto godibile. Divertente ma anche in grado di far riflettere. Al di là del gioco, che riesce a far si che il lettore si diverta moltissimo, rimane infatti la percezione di una dimensione più problematica, di un’angoscia esistenziale, di una difficoltà ad entrare in contatto con il mondo. Una condizione dolorosa che si fa sempre più strada nel racconto, che si percepisce sempre di più dietro l’umorismo. Un testo spassosissimo eppure amaro che concretizza e riflette le sfaccettature della follia.

I joined a group on Facebook called World Wide Round Robin and decided to do my first one. We are 6 in my group and will each stitch a picture on each others RR. We are 2 from Iceland, me and Sveina who is in my Icelandic stitching group Allt í kross, Kathryn and Cindy are from UK, June is from Scotland and Ruwani is from Australia. So my RR will travel half way around the world.
The first picture is stitched by it´s owner and here is a picture of mine. My theme is Cute Christmas.

And here is a picture of my fabric. I stitched my picture on the top middle square. When it will return home to me every square will be stitched by these wonderful ladies. Can´t wait to see it finished.

Today saw me glued to the TV set just for a change – I’ve been stitching pretty much every hour of the day since yesterday afternoon inbetween looking up at seasons 6 and 7 of Buffy … I haven’t wept so much over a damned TV show in a long, long time, but I’ve been totally sucked into the characters (in particular Spike), and the last few days has been an emotional rollercoaster watching those DVD’s. In some ways I’m glad I haven’t seen any of the series before, as it’s been a real treasure watching one season after another, without worrying about viewing schedules or adverts! And it’s been super-conducive to my stitching, that’s for sure, particularly during my recuperation

And here’s the final piece of stitching that I’ll probably get done for a day or three – here’s the final round of our Friendship Quaker Round Robin, belonging to Katrina. I’m quite surprised at the colour of Milady’s Teal, as its a lot more grey than I would have imagined – but it looks really quite classy stitched up

Of course I now have to start putting all my pieces together now, but I think a trip to the fabric/ribbon store will be needed before I can start getting to work.

Before I started stitching this morning I finally got around to trying to tea-dye some linen fabric – this wee piece is for Just Nan’s Winter in the Square. The original linen (the same as I used for Autumn in the Square) was too pale, I felt, to really show up the white floss, so I opted to tea-dye it slightly. I didn’t want a particularly splotchy look, so I tried to move the fabric around a reasonable amount in the saucepan while it was stewing – the only sign of the original fabric is the odd splotch or two on the bottom edge, which is great as it’ll be hidden by the frame eventually. So that means that that will probably by my next project in my “small-medium projects” rotation slot, which I still have about 7 hours left of

Postmen all around France have been busy delivering nice plump enveloppes as the CUBE Round Robin begun in the Spring came to an end.  Time, therefore, to show you photos of the designs I stitched for the five other members who took part.

Zaza’s theme was “hearts” so I used a colourful varigated thread to stitch a simple design

and, last, but not least . . . for Michou the chosen theme was “fruit” 

Well folks, back in the Spring, I signed myself up for a Round Robin on the forum Nos Plaisirs Créatifs . . . stitching with five other members, and the idea being to end up with a cube ^^ I haven’t got round to assembling my cube yet (as my fabric only arrived home yesterday) but I am pleased to show you photos of my fabric ,  on a CAT theme.

When everyone else has received their fabric, which should be very soon, I will post photos of the designs I stitched for each of the other five participants.  As well as my CUBE when I get round to assembling it ^^
