Le Film: Un excellent “Feel Good Movie”.

Synopsis:

One of the greatest cinematic love affairs of the past half-century has been between British film fa

One of the greatest cinematic love affairs of the past half-century has been between British film fans and an angular, accident-prone beanpole of a Frenchman named Monsieur Hulot. The iconic comedy character created by the mime-turned-star and writer-director Jacques Tati has been tickling the funny bones of filmgoers since the release of the movie which introduced him – M. Hulot’s Holiday – in 1953. And it’s a love affair which is being celebrated at this year’s French Film Festival, with a retrospective of all of Jacques Tati’s screen work.

Tati may only have made a handful of films, but they have made a lasting impression on generations of viewers – and it’s not just the popular vote which they’ve earned. His admirers have included Orson Welles, David Lynch, Steven Spielberg and Belleville Rendez-Vous creator Sylvain Chomet who is currently transforming a previously unfilmed Tati script into an animated film.

Tati’s brilliance as a comedy actor has influenced at least two generations of comedians: John Cleese, Paul Merton and Rowan Atkinson, who described seeing M Hulot’s Holiday as “a defining moment in my life” (and paid homage to it in his 2007 film Mr Bean’s Holiday), are just some of the British comics who owe a clear debt to Tati and his very physical comedy style.

But what is it about Tati that makes him so well-loved – even by viewers who wouldn’t ordinarily go to see a foreign film? The main reason has to be his “everyman” appeal. Tati created easily identifiable types who everyone can recognise from their own experience – the postman who takes himself and his work too seriously in his 1949 film Jour de Fete (could he have been the inspiration for Cliff Clavin, the super-officious mailman in the sitcom Cheers?) and the eager-to-please social misfit M Hulot, who creates chaos out of order and is baffled by the technological trappings of modern life.

M Hulot’s fellow holidaymakers are also brilliantly drawn and would fit in to Fawlty Towers as comfortably as they do the Hotel de la Plage. There’s the veteran soldier who drones on about his wartime experiences, the meek, middle-aged sweety-wifey of a husband who is always several steps behind his banality-spouting spouse (“Oh, there’s another boat … and another … oh!”) during their saunters around the beach, and the workaholic businessman whose holiday is punctuated by frequent trips to the telephone (rather like the Tony Roberts character in Woody Allen’s Play It Again Sam).

The humour in Tati’s films is very physical – and therefore universal. Tati said that the way a comic actor used his legs was paramount, and he used his to maximum comedy effect, mixing loping strides with hesitant little shuffles as he tries to ingratiate himself into new people’s company. Physically, M Hulot is every bit as recognisable – even in silhouette – as Charlie Chaplin’s iconic Little Tramp.

The characteristic Hulot pose is of him tilting forward, with his head at a quizzical angle, his hat tipped over his eyes, his ubiquitous pipe at a right angle to his long nose, his arms bent behind him with his hands resting on his hips. Like Chaplin’s alter ego, he always wears the same kit – trousers that aren’t quite long enough, his Tyrolean-esque hat and stripy socks. He nearly always has his umbrella handy. He walks with a lolling gait, on well-sprung tiptoes and is undoubtedly a French cousin d’un certain Basil Fawlty.

Tati’s background as a mime meant that he was most at home devising visual gags, rather than writing and delivering one-liners or trading witter banter with another actor. Terry Gilliam, the Monty Python team member who became a director, has said: “One of Tati’s great qualities is that his films contain almost no dialogue. I find this particularly brilliant – these divinely French films that create no problem when it comes to subtitling. In terms of dialogue, Monty Python learnt everything from Tati. We owe everything to him.”

Tati’s films feature soundtracks of exaggerated, cartoon-like noises which heighten the effect of the visual comedy – the putt, putt, putt of M Hulot’s old jalopy as it chugs along the road, the be-doing of the restaurant door as the motley crew of hotel guests assembles for lunch, the crashing noise made by our hero’s racquet as he serves in the funniest tennis match in movie history.

The gags which Tati created for his films worked on a number of levels. Many of today’s Tati fans have grown up with M Hulot’s Holiday and have found that their appreciation of it has only increased with time, as they find more and more humour in it.

There’s the obvious, laugh-out-loud slapstick sequences, which appeal enormously to children, but most of the humour lies in the beautifully observed, often whimsical, details which are not flagged up, but are quietly unfolding in a corner of the screen. It pays to see Tati’s films in the cinema as so much happens in the background – and he actively avoided filming close-ups. Orson Welles once said: “There are performers who are only good in full figure. Move in on Tati and he literally disappears.”

Of course, the films also appeal to anyone with a fondness for France and the French way of life. They celebrate the quaint, the eccentric and a lifestyle which Tati saw being replaced by a faster, more consumer and technology-driven one. Jour de Fete and M Hulot’s Holiday are lovely to look at, since they are set in unspoilt rural France, and they move at such a leisurely pace that you can soak up the detail of both the comedy and the setting.

Terry Jones, another Monty Python graduate, has said of Tati: “He was a visual genius. His films, without being silent, all have the qualities, the beauty and the richness of silent film.”

Even by the time he made his third film, Mon Oncle (1958), Tati was beginning to show signs of self-indulgence in his work. His subsequent films – PlayTime (1967), Trafic (1971) and Parade (1973) – are reviled and revered in equal measure. But Jour de Fete and M Hulot’s Holiday are perfect comedies that showcase Tati’s comedy at its most pure – and most appealing.

* The Totally Tati retrospective is on at the Glasgow Film Theatre and the Edinburgh Filmhouse now. The BFI’s new box set of five Tati films is out now.

From one British comic to another. The man that started Monday’s night of laughs, actually. I was watching a vintage clip of Rowan Atkinson yesterday that he did with John Cleese when I clicked on the Eddie Izzard related video that started me down the path of laughing to the point of almost asthma. The vintage clip was funny, but I like this one better.

Can’t remember when I first saw stand-up acts. It was on TV for sure. Maybe when I was on holiday overseas as a kid. I recall some really funny ones. And some that were more profanity than comedy. (I didn’t mind the profanity; it’s just that at some point it was profane just for the shock value and the jokes weren’t funny at all.)

Anyway, at the time I saw this, I thought it was brilliant. The amazing part, the whole Atkinson special has some hilarious physical comedy skits à la Mr Bean alongside his monologue sets. Amazing. The man wasn’t just scalpel-sharp in his wit, he was versatile as well. And that was even before I started on Blackadder.

But he’s more than just funny. In a BBC interview with Parkinson about the narrow gap between tragedy and comedy, Atkinson said: ”The darker, more serious the backdrop into which you set your comedy, sometimes the brighter your little sparks of comedy sets out in sharp relief against it.” They were talking about the famous and poignant poppy-filled last scene of Blackadder. Good chap.

I love Shakespeare. Obviously.

But every so often (and usually when I am trying to memorize lines), I want to take a leaf out of Blackadder’s book:

I actually really liked Branagh’s Hamlet, though (except for the absurd chandelier part. You know the one). So we’ll just agree to disagree there, Rowan Atkinson.

On October 5th, the Monty Pythons team celebrated the 40th birthday from their first broadcast on the BBC, with their series ”Monty Pythons Flying Circus” on October 5th, 1969.

A few years later, as a young student in the UK, even though my English wasn’t very good at the time, I used to watch them and found their show really hilarious! Even nowadays, I still recall many of their sketches and have a good laugh by myself. In fact, their style of humour, wacky, zanny, unconventional, call it what you will, was full of vibrant ideas, and the viewer was taken by surprise, never knowing what to expect. Their writing was revolutionary, as it did away with traditional style sketches. It had no punchlines, and often ended abruptly.

Monty Pythons have acquired so many fans worldwide. Their humour is unique and has lasted for so many years as it spans all generations. Their anarchic , groundbreaking style has created the most imaginative comedy on British TV.

Their 40th birthday gave me the idea to look at the astrological signature of the team. It is worth noting here that , on October 5, 1969,at about ”11.00 pm”, as the BBC site mentions as the time of broadcast, there was a stellium of the planets Mercury,Uranus, Sun and Jupiter in wide conjunction in the 4th house, all in wide sextile to the Moon in Leo in the 2nd house – the Moon being the ruler of the Ascendant.

Being a person whose Mercury is aspected by Jupiter,Saturn ,Uranus and the Moon myself, in addition Mercury is the planet closest to the MC,I thought that,if we are to examine the astrological markers for humour, we certainly need to look at the planet Mercury. The position and aspects of Mercury in the horoscope signify mentality ,speech patterns, communication style, sense of humour etc. Humour, though, can be expressed differently, and not everybody may find the same things funny.

But what do we mean exactly by the term ”’humour”? Many writers have given definitions for it. For example, Alastair Clarke says that ”humour occurs when the brain recognises a pattern that surprises it, and that recognition is rewarded with the experience of the humorous response, an element of which is broadcast in laughter”.

Arthur Koestler’s basic idea is that the creative act is a “bisociation” (not mere association) which happens, if two (or more) apparently incompatible frames of thought (“matrices”) are brought together by an ingenious mind. In jokes and humour, these conceptual systems are reversed, in the arts and in ritual, they are juxtaposed, in science, they are fused into a new larger synthesis. This corresponds to a “self-assertive” tendency in humour and a “self-transcending” tendency in art, while in science both tendencies are balanced.

In the case of the Monty Pythons’ style humour, it is not at all ordinary and certainly not slapstick. It definitely has the element of surprise, of the unexpected. We should expect to find a very strong Mercury and aspects to Jupiter in great humourists, as Jupiter gives the joie de vivre and the expanding of horizons needed for one to see the funny side of things. But, that is not enough for the Monty Pythons unique humour : I should expect the anarchic Uranus to be in aspect to Mercury. Uranus is the one giving the flavour of the unexpected, the original, the unique, even wacky, if you will.

Let us look at the horoscopes of the members of the team, and see the positions and aspects of Mercury:

Starting with Eric Idle:

We see that Eric Idle has Mercury in Aries and has no aspect to Jupiter, but they are in Signs squaring each other. Mercury does have a sextile to Uranus, opposition to Neptune and trine to Pluto.

Michael Palin:

Michael has Mercury in the sign it rules- Gemini- in conjunction to both Uranus, and Saturn, alll in sextile to Pluto. In addition, it has an open square to Mars.

John Cleese:

John has Mercury in Scorpio in opposition to Uranus, sextile to Neptune and an open square to Mars, but no major aspect to Jupiter.

Graham Chapman:

Graham (deceased 1989) had a conjunction of Mercury-Sun in trine to the Moon and Uranus , and open trine to Jupiter and Saturn. In addition the ruler of his Ascendant ( Capricorn) was in conjunction to Jupiter.

Terry Gilliam:

Terry has Mercury in Scorpio in sextile to hisVirgo Ascendant and in opposition to Saturn and Jupiter, plus an open square to Pluto. Terry mainly concerned himself with the animations, and his acting roles were supporting ones.

Terry Jones:

Terry Jones has Mercury in Aquarius in square aspect to Uranus and Saturn, while Jupiter, although making no major aspect to Mercury, is in Gemini, trining his Sun and Venus.

Having looked at all their charts, we found that all but one – Terry Gilliam – of the Monty Python team members, , have aspects of Mercury to Uranus. This should come as no surprise, as Uranus is related to the original, the surprising, and the unexpected. Mercury in all members of the team is overall heavily aspected. Three have major aspects to Jupiter.Again, it should not surprise us that in fve out of six members, Saturn is aspecting Mercury. Saturn is always necessary in order to provide the discipline and hard work required to put great original ideas into materialisation.

In addition to the Monty Python team, I examined the horoscopes of another six well-known humorist writers/comedians , namely:

( Note that their charts are not shown here, but can easily be found on the Internet )

Writer Douglas Adams ( Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) ,Actor Roberto Benini ( Il Mostro), Comedian Rowan Atkinson ( Mr. Bean and Blackadder), writer Tom Sharpe ( Indecent exposure), Benny Hill ( the Benny Hill show) and writer/director/actor Woody Allen.

I must stress at this point that the above examples examined, by no means constitute a valid statistical study, as a greater number of charts of humorists would be required, as well as an appropriate ”control group” .In addition, we have not taken into account in this study other aspects indicative of great humour and/or fame, e.g. MC aspects to Jupiter. Still, the results , I believe, are highly indicative of what we would expect to find in intellligent / witty people.

In all the horoscopes I examined above, I found a combination of planets aspecting Mercury: Jupiter, but also Saturn AND Uranus aspects Mercury. Jupiter shows expansion and optimism in intellectual pursuits, thus gives the proclivity for humour, Saturn gives the discipline, but it is Uranus that gives the urge to open things up, experiment with the new and original, and shows the need to be different from everyone / everything else , therefore creating the basis for Great Humour- and , most certainly, in the case of Monty Pythons, we were in ” For something completely different” !

It’s official; Balfours Beatty has acquired PB. This will create a new giant in the industry and should cause growth for both companies. The merger and integration of two quality oriented firms can cause a terrific synergy. This seems to be a case where these firms are concerned. And, the new economy of scale should allow both to expand in a world where engineering and construction firms are considered too small to compete with ten or fifteen thousand employees. Their service lines are compatible.

The bit of humor is that the secret talks were called Project Blackadder. Rowan Atkinson must be amused. New Civil Engineer had an interesting article on this. Here is the link: http://www.nce.co.uk/5208465.article

Hilarious sketch! It really emphasises the fact that the works of Shakespeare were not meant as literature or anything groundbreaking, rather the works were popular culture in Shakespearean times. Brilliant!

And of course, how could your resist Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Laurie together?

Enjoy! Cheers and God bless!

I’m seriously sorry, folks. But the state of pure mental and physical exhaustion I’m feeling this evening (thanks, anemia and Benadryl) is just not conducive to quality writing. So I thought I’d default to a fun video, as I tend to do when my thoughts have dried. Please enjoy!

For this week’s classic clips, we return to the brilliant 1970s/80s BBC sketch show Not The Nine O’Clock News.

Here are a couple of my (many) favourite sketches from the show.

First up, a vicar (Rowan Atkinson) is a little bemused by the increase in the size of his congregation when the BBC’s Songs Of Praise comes to film in his church:

In this one, a customer (Mel Smith) chooses the wrong hi-fi shop:

Kings and Queens of Britain :

The Fish Can Sing, Halldór Laxness :

Doctor Who, The Official Annual 2009 :
Ahem.

Love Actually & Shakespeare in Love :

Walk the Line :

Cela dit, Rhys m’a l’air prometteur…

Vais ptet me faire une soirée Bill Nighy moi… ♥
