(Originally published 2/9/09) Becoming a father ushers in so many hopes and dreams for your child. T

(Originally published 2/9/09)

Becoming a father ushers in so many hopes and dreams for your child. There’s a natural inclination to pass down the wisdom of experience even with the caveat that your child is to become his own person with or without your advice.

But that doesn’t stop my heart from overflowing with love and hope for Rowe. While there are some futures I secretly root for, I can honestly say that I don’t worry about the passions and hobbies he will develop. There are some areas where I am more proficient than others and that I selfishly hope we can share in. But I am equally open to his pursuit of happiness in ways that are less than relatable to my experiences.

But there is one thing I will not allow. I will not negotiate it, won’t support it, and cannot permit it regardless of what he feels.

I will never support Rowe entering into the reality TV realm.

When I pray, there are many things I pray for: Health, wisdom, discernment, etc. But I also pray that I will never suffer from the indignity of watching Rowe make an idiot of himself on television.

I pray that his presence is never seen on The Real World, COPS, or The Bachelor. Is that too much to ask for? (As an addendum to this list, I would also prefer that Rowe never be interviewed by local news….after a tornado…with a trailer park as the backdrop.)
Let me ask you this: In the 20+ years of The Real World, has there ever been a single male cast member that you would have your son emulate? The short answer: No. (And if you are wondering, I did include this season’s ex-dude and transsexual, Katelynn Cusanelli in my vetting for a reputable Real-Worlder. Not surprisingly, her sex-change really hurt his/her chances at being example-worthy.)

Do you know how many nights I wake up in the throes of a nightmare where Rowe is apprehended by his mullet-haired head on COPS, while wearing a grease-stained wife-beater? I must have missed the chapter on night terrors concerning your child’s future in What to Expect When You Are Expecting.

And as for The Bachelor, let’s be clear: I watch. I’m not joining the fan club or anything, but I watch. But it’s more a bewilderment with the belief that the process of truly loving someone can be distilled into a camera-influenced 2-month(ish) period. But I do watch and will continue to watch with a skepticism that is framed with fascination.

But the fear is that if Rowe ends up on The Bachelor, he A) has an incredibly skewed idea about what love is, B) is an insatiably attention-hound or C) will be unable to use any adjective other than “amazing” to describe a woman.

Clearly, I want the world for Rowe and will be happy only if he is truly happy. I want him to discover and pursue what he loves. Just not on Temptation Island or Bromance.

(Originally published 1/30/09) Taking a baby anywhere in the winter feels like a time trial on Doubl

(Originally published 1/30/09)

Taking a baby anywhere in the winter feels like a time trial on Double Dare. There are blankets, baby carriers to be hustled, cars to be warmed, and tiny little feet to be sock-covered.

But fundamentally, a trip to the doctor feels a bit like Russian Roulette. It’s great for the purposes of check-ups and immunizations, but the waiting room presents a formidable gauntlet to a vulnerable immune system.

We went this past Thursday because Rowe didn’t seem to be feeling his all-time best. Was the trip necessary? Probably not. But we prefer to err on the side of caution with him so we made the appointment.

The epilogue to this story is that he was fine. Negative for RSV, positive for awesomeness, and confirmed teething. However the main conflict of the story arose from the predicament of the waiting room.

Naive and ignorant as I was before being a father (and still am actually), I did not know that pediatricians segregate their waiting rooms between the sick and the well babies. On the surface, this approach seems suitable. Why expose the healthy babies to the sick ones if it’s not necessary?

But what of the babies who are neither totally well or totally sick?

Is it necessary for them to be banished to the sick side where infection and exposure is a certainty? I understand the plight of determining how sick is too sick, but I couldn’t stand the thought of Rowe soaking up the buffet spread of germs on the sick side of the room , so while Ashley checked us in, I scampered to the safety of the healthy side. Rowe and I set up in a distant corner of the room so as to avoid detection and skeptical glances. When Ashley returned, we contemplated switching sides and honoring the code of the pediatrician’s waiting room.

Our glance to the other side of the room was met with rows of seats that were filled to capacity and saturated with both children and parents alike who were hacking, sneezing, sniffing, and groaning.

Just then, a mother and child burst through the double doors that bisected the waiting room into the sick and healthy halves. With a tone equal parts panicked and stern, she yelled, “GIT YOUR HINEY TO THE RESTROOM, SON!”

The little boy looked like a deer that had somehow ended up in a suburban backyard: Clueless and frantic. Unable to heed his mother’s command, he sprayed a brown surge of vomit from the door’s entrance to the check-in desk. His spewage had essentially acted as a Berlin Wall of sorts. No one on either side would be crossing over his liquid regurgitations until the sawdust had settled.

I try to avoid misappropriating God’s influence in my life to the trivial matters, but at this moment, I felt that God was clearly advising us to stay on the well side. We did, moments later we were summoned to the privacy of our examination room, and Rowe’s clean bill of health vanquished me from any feelings of guilt.

Just another trip to the doctor.

“We like them to come out ask questions, talk to us, see what we do,” said Rowe. “See the cars. See our police K-9, and see us in action up close and personal.”

This is how a K-9 might stop a fleeing criminal. Dogs are trained to grab hold of non-vital areas like arms and legs.

Crys is three years old and was donated to Adel Police by Lackland Airforce Base in Texas. Crys has helped seize thousands of dollars in drugs.

He’s a belgian malinois. Crys was first trained at the air force base to sniff out bombs but police say having a dog that sniffs out both drugs and bombs isn’t a good idea.

“If we do go into a situation where he does scent on what we believe is a narcotic odor and it ends up being a bomb odor, that wouldn’t be good for me to stick my hand in there and pull that out,” said K-9 Officer Paul Turner.

Crys completed his narcotics training through the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

Crys has been on the force since February. Drug dogs typically serve for 7 or 8 years.

After shots were fired by a passenger in a sports utility vehicle in downtown New Bern Saturday, Off

After shots were fired by a passenger in a sports utility vehicle in downtown New Bern Saturday, Officer James Rowe with the New Bern Police Department K-9 Unit released his dog on the man.

The dog jumped through the window of the parked vehicle at the passenger, which drew a cheer from a crowd of onlookers gathered for one of several demonstrations by K-9 unit handlers as part of the MumFest 2009 festivities.

Rowe, senior handler and trainer for the K-9 unit, as well as Officer Thomas Carter demonstrated the obedience as well as the search and assistance abilities of Bak, a German shepherd from Czechoslovakia and Zorin, a Belgian Malinois.

In one demonstration, Bak searched four closed suitcases laid out in a row on the parking lot for marijuana. He scratches, barks and bites in the area where he has discovered drugs, Rowe said, as he is an “aggressive alert” dog trained to react that way.

In another simulation, Zorin, searched for one of the officers, who was hiding inside one of several large white boxes. Zorin trotted swiftly around the boxes, and then he barked and jumped on the box when he found the officer.

Then the crowd watched while Carter demonstrated how the dogs are trained in verbal and hand signals, commanding Zorin to sit, lie down and come. The verbal commands are issued in German, Carter said.

New Bern resident Owen Rose said the demonstration was an “awesome sight.”

The 7-year-old had stopped to watch the dogs with his parents after watching a man make balloon animals and the balancing and stunts of the Kenya Safari Acrobats.

He said the dogs’ abilities were “cool,” and that he was startled by the gunshot in the traffic stop demonstration.

“It would need to take a lot of training,” he said.

Claudia Rose commented that the traffic stop really showed the dog’s agility.

“We were just talking about the amount of training it takes, that these dogs go through with their handlers,” she said.

New Bern resident Mel Taylor had an opportunity to pet both Bak and Zorin after watching them demonstrate their abilities.

“They’re just beautiful dogs, highly trained and really good-natured,” she said. “I’ve got a soft spot for animals anyways, and I think it’s great that we’ve got such outstanding people protecting us in our police force and in our K-9 unit.”

Yesterday, Joey and I went two different directions for Family Fun Day.

Tim and I went to the Bio Blitz at Rowe Sanctuary to count bird species from 7am until noon (yes, that means that we got up before 5am to make it there in time) and then to a violin workshop with Dr. Chen all afternoon. Since these two events were already on the calendar for Saturday, I was mentally calculating how to make additional plans for some family fun once we got home that evening, as if family fun could not occur in two separate locations during the day. Then, it occurred to me that Joey and the rest of the family could be having fun while Tim and I were having fun. Family Fun doesn’t have to involve the entire family in one location!

So, Joey and the rest of the kids went apple-picking and we all had a jolly, family-fun-filled day.

For quite some time I’ve been marvelling at the ability of intrinsic motivation to produce great results. I watched my students last year make a concert happen in six weeks when we joined Project Global Cooling and we had a set time frame to work towards. It wasn’t part of the curriculum, it wasn’t assessed, and yet they worked themselves into the ground to pull it off because they believed in what they were doing. I saw a similar thing happen this year with the Sleepout 4 Schools initiative our Yr 9 students ran.

I’ve experienced it first hand. Writing this blog is fuelled by intrinsic motivation. I don’t get paid for it, I don’t even know who is reading it half the time, and yet I plough on because there is personal satisfaction in doing it. I’m intrinsically motivated and there is no doubt my workplace is at an advantage because of this. I take what I learn back there.

Dan Pink presented a TED talk in July talking about the results that businesses can achieve when workers are intrinsically motivated. It’s fascinating and will form the basis of a new book he is releasing in December this year. Drive: the surprising truth about what motivates us. Garr Reynolds has written a post about this – it led me to Dan’s TED talk.

Unfortunately the ROWE (results only work environment) idea that Dan refers to isn’t going to apply to teaching anytime soon. I’d love to see Google’s approach applied though in school settings. Right now I need the 20% ‘Google time’ to discover new ideas that can be applied to education. If I were still paid my wage, but given the equivalent of a day to mine my personal learning network for ideas applicable to teaching and learning, then I think that’s a good investment made. This constant working 24/7 approach is wearing thin but intrinsic motivation keeps me going!

OK, you just started a job – any job – what happens first? Do you learn about your roles and responsibilities and the chain of command OR do you find out from other employees what you don’t have to do, what never gets checked, how to cut corners, and who the asshole managers are?

Its a shame, but the latter seems to be the norm. And I am sorry to admit, but that is because organizations breed this kind of animosity by not engaging employees on a regular basis. I do not mean to reward and reprimand. We know that is happening, which will be addressed in a future post. But why aren’t managers/supervisors/directors engaging employees on topics of job design, job satisfaction, goal/objective development, and yes, the decision making process?

I do not care what industry it is: restaurant to IT. Speaking with employees, preferably one-on-one, to solicit her/his thoughts/views about work day happenings, the organization’s direction, and morale can provide specific insight into how situations uniquely affect her/him and may lead to ways to better motivate her/him.

Is the way we work conducive to producing results and achieving organizational success? Is being held captive to the clock in the office aligned with a 24/7 work cycle? Is rearranging one’s personal life to physically be at work healthy? Is technology undervalued in work settings? Is face time overrated? Does it make more sense to be driven/measured by results than by how much time you spend in a chair or who you know at work?

Her name is Saundra Rowe formally Lady Lavelle Model,Body paint Model turned singer, songwriter. I can take credit for being one of the first to show Saundra to the world when i covered and interviewed her at the Ne-Yo birthday party 2 years ago. I was interviewing Saundra truthfully cause her body was bangin she has a incredible face and i just wanted to get next to her, but what happens when i asked her “what was her favorite NE-YO song shocked me.

She has now decided to pursue music full time(smart choice the girl is super talented). I go on her MySpace daily hoping she has another joint up. Saundra is currently working on her Debut Single and let me tell ya’ll this hot black sicilian and Cuban bombshell will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.. All you have to do is go on her Myspace page and check out her little Remix of Drake’s Your The Best” and then check out her new single “Ready”and you will see why i am co-signin so much.

Debbie Rowe, Drogen – Endlich mal Fakten!

<img title="Michael Jackson 1958-2009 - 25 June 2009 - Holmby Hills, CA - Michael Jackson. Michael suffered cardiac arrest at his Holmby Hills home this afternoon and was rushed to UCLA Medical Center. CNN Reports that Jackson was in a coma and has died at the age of 50. File Photo: 15 November 2006 - London, England - Michael Jackson. World Music Awards 2006 held at Earls Court.

If you can imagine it, we can make it!

Everything we do has to first begin with a brilliant idea, and in our family business, everyone has their hand in every idea that comes through. From my mother who answers the phone, all the way through the process until your order reaches you, our friends and customers. Here’s the 411 on how we do things.

Susan, the matriarch of our crazy group is more often than not the first voice you hear if you call our offices. And for good reason, she epitomizes “service with a smile” in all of her dealings with customers and friends.

We offer so many services that it can get a little overwhelming at times, but she’s great at helping you sort everything out so that, when it’s all said and done, what you get meets and exceeds your expectations.

From the initial order to the day when that order then leaves our hands and is ready for delivery. Susan takes care of it all, and does so in a patient, serving way. She’s truly great at what she does!

Once the details of the order are finalized, it comes lands on the desk of yours truly.

My tasks range from keeping up with our customer database, print advertising and social media updates (obviously), and on to the art design and 3D model making of most of the pieces that come through. My official title is Design Director, but as many of you know, in a family business, everyone does a little of everything.

We advertise monthly in law enforcement publications such as The Blues, New Jersey COPS, Badge & Gun, The Retired Badge, and the TMPA publication In Service. We also have ads in several Catholic publications, run an ad in the annual edition of the Arkansas Sheriff’s Association magazine, and a handful of other bits here and there.

Once the piece has been designed and is in 3D art form, the project moves on to my step-son, Bryce. He does all of this super-technical stuff on the computer which takes the 3D art and reads it as a model to be cut out of thick sheets of wax.

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” (Michaelangelo)

Bryce does an incredible job bringing the art on my computer screen to life in wax models. Sometimes a single mini-badge pendant design may take a full day just to mill in wax, and you never know when some little something will be a smidge off and the whole piece has to re-milled. Bryce’s patience is constantly tested, but he always ends up winning in the end, and passing along beautiful, flawless waxes to be cast.

Daryl Schultheiss, our bench jeweler with just under three decades of experience under his belt is the only member of the G. W. Rowe Corporation who is not a blood relative, but we’re all so close that he might as well be family.

Daryl is a real asset to us in the jewelry casting and finishing stages of the game.

He sprues, invests, burns out, casts, quenches, electro-cleans, saws, buffs, polishes, masks, plates, colors, and solders…and that’s just the short list.

Before Daryl joined our crew full time, he helped my father and the company’s founder, Gary Rowe, in the shop during the busiest months of the year, so that we could service our customers with the highest quality service and craftsmanship. Since then, we have been blessed with business and it has been more than Dad could reasonable handle on his own. Everything we do is a team effort, and Daryl really helps to round out our team.

Last but certainly not least is our own founder, shield maker, and chief bottle washer, Gary Rowe.

None of this would be possible without my father’s vision for what could be. We began as a small one-man operation with the goal of designing miniature badges as pendants for law enforcement and fire personnel of the highest quality, true mini-badges.

From there, we have blossomed into custom mini-badges as charms, lapel pins, tie tacs, gun grip inserts, and cuff links. We also create gun butt plates, wallet size and full size sterling silver and solid gold badges.

Along the journey, as our customers across the country continue to be impressed with our work, they have blessed us even more by sharing with their friends the good experiences they have with our little family business. Through word of mouth, our business has expanded and for that we feel truly blessed.

Over the years, we have also developed a number of unique religious, fraternal, and just for fun designs that did not necessarily fit in our Houston Badge Company mold. So, last year we launched the G. Rowe Craftsman website to make these unique designs available for purchase.

Many of you have already seen how we’ve grown and expanded our line of custom and signature fine jewelry. Let me first say “thank you,” and then add a word of encouragement to continually check back with us, as we are updating both lines regularly.

Our family is so fortunate to be able to do something that we are passionate about, as we serve the law enforcement and fire communities, families and friends. Thank you all for your continued interest in us as individuals and as a family business that is here to serve you with your fine jewelry desires.
