As one of Roy Jones’ biggest fans I would like to offer this plea to Roy Jones. Growing up watching sports I always loved boxing a lot and Roy Jones Jr. was always my favorite fighter. Still is one of my favorites despite not being the same fighter he once was.

Despite his recent woes he was and still is one of the greatest boxers of all-time. Especially in Jones’ prime in the 1990s where he was named the “Fighter of the Decade” by the Boxing Writer’s Association of America. Not to mention he won eight belts across four divisions from middleweight to heavyweight. I mean those numbers don’t lie.

But after seeing the clip from Jones’ recent fight against Australian Danny Green Wednesday I think it’s about time for Jones to finally once and for all hang the gloves up for good.

I never though I would have to say this about Jones but ever since the Antonio Tarver and Glenn Johnson fights a few years back he has never been the same. It’s sad to because Roy was such a great fighter but like most he just didn’t know when to hang the gloves up at the right time. Yes a fight with Bernard Hopkins would have been nice but after this fight it wouldn’t be the same and it would have been better to watch when they where both in their primes.

Which is why I’m gracefully begging and pleading that Roy retire now before he ruins anymore of his great boxing legacy. As we know it would be better to go out on top but he obviously doesn’t have that fire he once had to finish his career on top which is really a shame. And me and a lot of other Roy Jones Jr. fans don’t want to see him tarnish his legacy anymore then he already has.

This is the face one makes when trying to remove a foot stuck up their arse....

What’s good, my peeps? Back from a beautiful holiday trip to Philly, I’m rested and focused…..let’s catch up on some sports items that have recently gone down….

Tiger Woods was forced to admit to some “transgressions” yesterday in the aftermath of a car accident he was involved in earlier in the week. Woods released a statement just yesterday that, in addition to apologizing to his wife and family, demonized our culture’s need to scrutinize celebrities’ personal lives. I actually agree with him on that point; the amount of press coverage into this has become nauseating; however, where much is given, much is expected and the carefully cultivated image that Woods has worn all these years does not match up to the what has transpired recently. If you accept the millions and the acclaim, you also have to take the lumps when they come as well. My guess is this will die down soon and he’ll go back to dominating the golf world and his wife will giggle as she counts the mils she’ll get as a result of homeboy’s wandering eye.

He's back, Philly.......

Allen Iverson signed a one year deal to return to his original team , the Philadelphia 76ers , yesterday and became emotional during the press conference held today. Normally, I’d be the first one to bash this guy and his oversized ego, but I’m gonna give him the tiniest bit of leeway this time. A.I. has been through the ringer throughout his career and the fact that no team would step up to claim him initially had to be especially tough to take. Sure, much of his problems have been self-inflicted and his selfish style of play has become a liability in recent years…..but his return to this once proud but down franchise only brings good feelings and memories to a city that is in desperate need of something to cheer about. A.I. is not The Answer anymore, but he fills the role of The Prodigal Son just fine….good luck, homie.

The fight that boxing needs badly.......who's gonna win?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has agreed to terms for a fight with Manny Pacquiao, with the fight likely to take place in the first half of 2010. Although Pacquiao has yet to sign, this seems like a formality at this point, and for the first time in a very long, long time, the sport of boxing has an epic bout to get its fanbase excited. I, for one, amazed that Floyd signed so quickly and I’m happy for the both of them, in that they are about to make a shit load of money. One can only hope that both men can train the way that they need to and focus on the monumental moment that is in front of them…….and I hope that Floyd doesn’t take this guy lightly…..just ask Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton about that….

Y'all must have forgot......I can get dropped, too......

In other boxing news, Roy Jones Jr. suffered another embarrassing defeat at the hands of some guy that I’ve probably stood behind in line at Wal-Mart. Roy’s career just fell to pieces quickly, didn’t it? Once upon a time, this was one of the most feared men on the planet….now, he’s seemingly a shell of himself…..this is starting to look like the end of Tyson’s career, ain’t it? Come on Roy……put those gloves down while you can still walk and talk…..for reference, go talk to Ali and Frazier, and see what happens when you stay in the ring too long…..

This is probably right after the Ritalin and Halcyon kicked in.......

Okay……I’ve tried to see things this guy’s way…..from the rumble in Detroit, the wack ass haircuts, the bad raps and Michael Jackson tributes, the forty foot jumpers that damn near tore the rim off the backboard, etc…..but this latest bit of nonsense from Ron Artest is too much to take…..now, this fool reveals that he used to get blitzed on Henny during halftime of games that he played in Chicago……wtf? This guy got pissed when someone threw a beer on him, yet he was throwing back shots of cognac and then going out to play a half of NBA-level basketball? I thought he was crazy when he tried to get a job at Best Buy to get the employee discount, but this is on the next level, dude is as crazy as cat shit……sorry, just gotta call it as I see it, he’s mental like Garth from Wayne’s World…..up his dosage, Doc, please…..

The Tennis version of the Method Man.....sheesh

And finally, speaking of revelations, how about Andre Agassi’s admission that he used meth during his playing days, intentionally tanked matches, and almost lost the weave that he had in his hair during the French Open one year…..the fact that all of this came out on his book tour is a little suspect, but damned, that puts his whole Hall of Fame career in another light, doesn’t it? I guess image IS everything……and his image just got a bit fuzzy, at least in my eyes anyway…..shout out to Brooke Shields, who got trashed as well in Agassi’s book…..that was foul.

That’s it for now, folks…….but you and I know that there will be more to come……no doubt.

It’s been a bad week for Floridian sports stars when it comes to getting knocked out unconscio

It’s been a bad week for Floridian sports stars when it comes to getting knocked out unconscious. First it was golfer Tiger Woods, knocked out by his wife and a golf club, and last night Roy Jones got it from a fellow boxer.

Basically..40-year-old Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out last night by Australian Danny Green, who retained his IBF World Cruiserweight title in Australia last night.

This opens the March 13th date up for the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout that would have been postponed to a later date, if Roy had won, due to a scheduled bout against Bernard Hopkins, in a battle of the grandads.

Danny Green meets Roy Jones Jr.

The bout will never happen with the outcome for Roy last night.

The AP reports…Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.

The 36-year-old Green retained his title and improved to 28-3 with his technical knockout over Jones at the Acer Arena, in the American’s first professional fight on foreign soil in his 20-year career.

It was only Jones’ sixth loss since 1989, along with 54 wins, 40 by knockout.

Green floored Jones with a right hand to the head after one minute. Green moved in to apply more pressure, and following a series of blows, English referee Howard Foster stopped the bout after just 122 seconds.

Jones offered no excuses for a defeat which could signal the end of his career.

“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny,” Jones said.

Green was almost apologetic for handing such a defeat to one of his boxing role models.

Green, who only came out of a 13-month retirement in April,

“That almost hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring,” he said.

“I am just overwhelmed – this is the greatest victory in my entire life.”

Jones Jr is now unlikely to continue in the ring and said: “I have got to take my hat off to Danny, it was a great performance. I guess now I go back into retirement.”

Jones had to win the Green fight for the Hopkins fight to happen on HBO on the March 13th date.

Roy Jones Jr. after fight

Now, hopefully boxing fans can be treated to a real battle between two boxers in their prime, and that is Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

In defeat,Roy Jones, Jr. officially hands March 13 HBO date to Arum, Pacquiao, and Mayweather…and I say Thank you Roy, I was a big fan of yours, won and lost bets based on my confidence in you.

Roy Jones, Jr. has earned his retirement, and I hope he goes back to broadcasting fights, starting with Mayweather and Pacquiao.

B-Hop will find someone else to knock out…he is still going strong at his advanced age,and as you can see, not every boxer can do what B-Hop does especially at his age.

IS ROY JONES JR BOXING CAREER OVER?

Australia’s Danny Green scythed down a boxing legend as he stopped American superstar Roy Jones Jnr in just two minutes at Acer Arena on Wednesday night.

Making the first defence of his IBO cruiser weight world title, 36-year-old Green floored Jones with a big right hand to the head after one minute.

Sensing his opponent was still vulnerable, Green applied further pressure and backed up the American who suddenly looked all of his 40 years.

Several unanswered punches prompted English referee Howard Foster to stop the bout after just 122 seconds.

Jones landed a handful of punches in the opening minute during which both men felt each other out with quick jabs.

Jones, a four-division eight times world champion, offered no excuses for a defeat which could signal the end of a wonderful career.

“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny,” Jones told the crowd.

Green sounded almost apologetic after humbling one of the greatest fighters of this or any other generation.

“He’s one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks Roy Jones Jr,” Green told the crowd.

“I almost feel bad doing that, that almost most hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring.

“He’s a bloody legend.”

The incredible win was undoubtedly the highlight of Green’s eight-year professional career and improves his record to 28-3, with 24 KOs.

Jones is scheduled to have a rematch with his old American adversary Bernard Hopkins early next year, but that bout and his continuation in the sport must surely now be in doubt.

Green dedicated the victory to the memory of his niece Sophie, who passed away in 2006.

Although he trumpeted his underdog status before the bout, Green took aim at the critics who had given him no chance of upsetting Jones.

“I didn’t surprise myself,” said Green, who said the victory was for all Australians.

He described the victory as the third greatest moment of his life following the birth of his children Chloe and Archie.

Challenger Jones, whose record now stands at 54-6, with 40 KOs, was the first man into the ring following an almost interminable hour-long wait after the final undercard bout.

He received a warm welcome, but it was almost quiet compared to the rapturous reception Green got as he waited for over one minute after the start of his traditional walk in song, Men At Work’s iconic Down Under.

There can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that at the height of his boxing prowess, Roy Jones Jr(54-6,40 KO’s), was one of the pre-eminent boxers on the planet and of his generation. Self aggrandizing , yes, publicity seeking gimmick whore , yes again ! But what has happened to Jones over the last half decade assures why it is that many avowed fight fans have indeed become fed up with the ‘fight game’.

Jones seen here talking about fighting the Australian fighter, Danny Green (28-3, 25 KO’s).What took place in their bout, simply put, was nothing short of amazing.

Nowadays, Jones as a fighter barely lives up to his reputation of the past. Even more so now, wherein, he’s become a complete caricature of his former self ! He’s not had a meaningful fight in years , and though it must be said, that it wasn’t much of a stretch to see him defeat then WBA heavyweight champion of the world,John Ruiz (44-8-1, 30 KO’s) in March of 2003. That fight made Jones the first boxer to successfully challenge for the heavyweight title while at the time still being a fully fledged light heavyweight and at the time a champion within the division. His defeat of Ruiz only added to his legacy and as such, firmly placed him on a pedestal, where he could now be viewed as one of the great fighters of the modern era.

SYDNEY (AP)—Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.

“He’s one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks, Roy Jones Jr.,” Green told the crowd.

Jones seen here fighting Korea’s Park Si-Hun in the light middleweight division in the boxing finals, at the Seoul Olympics, of 1988.

Jones, first came to our notice, as a young up and coming light middleweight. He was part of the US Olympic boxing team that competed in Seoul, South Korea, in 1988. But what would happen at those games would in many ways come to determine what Roy Jones Jr, was about as a fighter. Entered in the light middleweight category, Jones was heavily favored to win the competition. And by far in a way, he was ‘the best boxer’ competing in the entire Olympic tournament. However, the infamy and treachery that took place when, Jones, met Park Si Hun, of Korea , in the light middleweight finals of the competition, would leave an indelible scar on Jones and the entire fraternity of international amateur boxing over the next decade. In a highly contested bout, where Jones was clearly ahead . Somehow the judges saw fit to award Park the fight in a split decision by the judges, 3-2. The outcry from not only those in attendance and the US Boxing delegation wasn’t met with any sympathy whatsoever by the judges or the International Olympic Committee (IOC), at the time.

Fans there and their resultant boos concerning the decision, only heightened the fact that the outrage and bias that had taken place , was simply the sort of corrupt actions that would take place over the entire Seoul games. And even having lodged an appeal with the IOC, as well as with FIBA, the governing body for international amateur boxing. The result stood and Jones was left with nothing but a silver medal to show for his gallant efforts throughout the entire competition. Albeit, that he was awarded the conciliatory prize of being named the best boxer of the tournament.

Jones’ professional career over the ensuing years, are what essentially dreams are made of. His dominance in the middleweight division. Where, he essentially carved out a niche for himself, by completely destroying the competition within the division. Having won world titles in the middleweight division, Jones would then move up in weight categories and repeat his accomplishments, there as well. From the middleweight to the light-heavyweight divisions , Jones was at times a one man wrecking crew. Reeking havoc and devastation upon whomever he met. But over the course of time, confidence gave way to overt cockiness and self aggrandizement , which would lead to Jones’ over confidence in his abilities. And in some ways thinking even less and deriding his opponents. Something that he still hasn’t learned his lessons from. Be it showmanship and his way of publicizing a bout. It didn’t always sit well with the fans. They found it to be repeatedly monotonous and ever so boring !

His fights against such erstwhile opponents such as Glen Johnson, Antonio Tarver and Jeff Lacy . Whilst, on the face of it , there were in some ways entertaining. They never really carried with it any assurance that Jones was still a dominant fighter on the boxing stage. Granted, he had the reputation as a showman and a great fighter, when he chose to be. But much of the time, it was mere silliness on his part and on the odd occasion where he thought it meaningful to grace us with his presence in something of a bout. More often than not, on the receiving end was an opponent one would view as a tomato can to be beaten up, on. Jones had losses as well as victories over each of the triumvirate mentioned. But in large part , what happened and what Jones viewed as to what could apparently happen now. Well, in no way did he ever expect to see that particular plan go up in smoke, the way that it has done in his most recent bout.

<img src="http://tophatal.wordpress.com/files/2009/12/jones-takes-a-body-shot-from-green-during-the-bout.jpg" alt="Australian titleholder Danny Green (L) lands a punch on four-division world champion Roy Jones Jnr (R) of the US during their IBO cruiserweight World Title bout in Sydney on December 2, 2009.

Jones traveled to Australia , to meet the native, Danny Green (28-3, 25 KO’s) , in what was meant to be a ‘tune up bout’, before his long awaited fight with former undisputed middleweight champion, Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1-1NC,32 KO’s). That fight essentially is now kaput, with Jones having suffered a staggering and inexplicable first round knockout loss to the young Australian, Danny Green. Needless to say, there were no excuses from Jones. But one now has to question, whether or not it is worthwhile for Jones to continue on in his professional endeavor as a boxer. He’s now becoming the type of opponent that at one time he’d so effortlessly face on the way to some much celebrated victory. No longer is Roy Jones Jr, the most dominant fighter of his generation. In essence his fall from grace , mirrors his abrasiveness and unwillingness to admit that he’s no longer the top dog in the kennel. He’s now become the mutt that everyone finds ugly to look at and who’s essentially become the butt of everyone’s jokes .

Green for his part, can now march to the beat of his own drum. He’s successfully defended his IBO cruiser-weight title and now can await the numerous big money offers that are bound to come his way. Especially after his devastating one punch knockout of a former legend of the ring.

Green’s devastating knockout punch that has or should essentially
end Jones’ career, forthwith ! Roy Jones Jr now , is simply looking his age , an old worn out battered warrior. Simply put , he no longer gives you, your bang for the bucks you’re said to be shelling out. And the same can be said of his peers, Antonio Tarver, Jeff Lacy and Glen Johnson. ‘They’re over the hill’ ! But they’re far too dumb to realize it.

And as I now view it, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving individual ! Sorry Roy but it’s now time to hang up the gloves, once and for all ! Otherwise, you’ll continue to be the tomato can that everyone has begun to beat up on and kick around the ring. C’mon man, call it a day ?

It’s all over. At 40 years old after a 20+ year career and winning eight belts in four divisions from middle weight to heavy weight Roy Jones Jr. was knocked out in just 122 seconds.

Australian IBO world cruiser weight champion Danny Green laid Jones out with a strong right hand to the head. It looks to be the end for Jones Jr. He’s only lost six times since 1989 (he won 54) and this blow should knock him out for good.

I doubt Roy will want to go out like that though, getting knocked out in the land down under in an Aussie’s backyard while the man that punished him says that he feels bad because he saw Roy as an idol. Jones set his self up going to a champion’s homeland to fight and I’d bet Jones’ mentality won’t let him go out like that. I just hope he does the right thing and retires or at least wins his next fight so he can hang his gloves up for good.

We don’t need another Muhammad Ali being wheeled around for the rest of his life because he refused to call it quits until he’s knocked absolutely senseless.

It’s been an illustrious career Roy; please learn from the other boxers that fight for too long. No one will remember you for your last fight, heck I bet barely anyone even knew you were fighting today. What everyone will remember you for is the near flawless career you exuberated so please, do your family and fans a favor and retire while you can still function.

Roy Jones Jr. has been made to be a complete disgrace in the sport of boxing. Roy fought Danny Green the other night and got rocked again in the first round. The fight was called to an end after Roy stopped throwing punches back. Roy just give it up, your legacy is very tarnished. Peep the video when you

Via ESPN:

SYDNEY — Australian Danny Green stopped Roy Jones Jr. in the first round of their IBO world cruiserweight title fight Wednesday, preventing the 40-year-old American from claiming his ninth title across five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight.

“He’s one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks, Roy Jones Jr.,” Green told the crowd.

“I almost feel bad doing that, that almost hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring. He’s a bloody legend.”

After nearly a one-hour delay following an undercard bout, Jones entered the arena to mild applause. But Green, with the Australian band Men at Work’s song “Down Under” playing, entered the ring to an ovation moments later.

“I didn’t surprise myself,” said Green.

Green won the IBO cruiserweight title in Biloxi, Miss., in August with a victory over Argentina’s Julio Cesar Dominguez on the undercard to Jones’ NABO light heavyweight championship win over Jeff Lacy.

Jones had been stopped just twice in his career, by Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, but Green warned ahead of the fight that he could end the Sydney fight early.

“I won’t name which punch, but there’s one punch, if I hit him clean with it, he is going to be knocked out for a week,” Green said. “His speed can baffle me, but my power — it can hospitalize someone. My fists are like bricks.”

Green has never been stopped, although he was knocked down but not out by Argentina’s Omar Gonzalez in 2004.

The Australian twice lost bids for the WBC super middleweight title to Markus Beyer — one by disqualification and the other in a split decision. He retired temporarily in March 2008 before making a comeback in April this year.

Jones, who has eight belts across four divisions from middleweight to heavyweight, was a strong betting favorite.

Green weighed in at nearly 179 pounds while Jones was at just over 179.

ROY JONES JR.

Once invincible boxer Roy Jones Jr. suffered a humiliating, career-jeopardizing loss today in Sydney, Australia. The 40-year-old Jones was knocked out in the first round by Danny Green.

The loss pretty much kills any chance for the proposed Roy Jones Jr./Bernard Hopkins fight that was supposed to take place in 2010.

Roy Jones Jr. once ruled boxing and was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. N

Roy Jones Jr. once ruled boxing and was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Now? Not so much. He had a swift fall from the top. He’s a long way from the pinacle of the sport he made plenty of money for. Well he’s not done fighting. Peep who his next opponent will be in February….

Via ESPN:

LOS ANGELES — Sixteen years after they first met, Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins will finally fight again.

For years, they talked on and off about a rematch, but the negotiations always fell apart over how they would split the money.

But with both men now past their 40th birthdays and no significant fights looming for either, they finally nailed down the elusive deal, signing an agreement Friday for a light heavyweight fight sometime in the first quarter of 2010, both sides told ESPN.com.

It will be televised on HBO PPV.

“Sixteen years ago they fought each other and went on and made history in their own way,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Hopkins’ promoter. “Each one is considered today as ring royalty. That’s why I think when those two guys are going to fight it will be to determine who will be king of the ring. We went back and forth for so long, but we finally pulled it off. They both signed and they will fight. It will be a truly historic showdown. A lot of people didn’t believe it would ever happen. But guess what? It’s going to happen.”

However, the deal is contingent on Jones’ first winning a Dec. 2 fight in Australia against Australian cruiserweight Danny Green, which has been planned for a couple of months.

Also as part of their deal, Hopkins is allowed to take an interim fight before the end of the year. In an interview at Schaefer’s downtown Los Angeles office, he said Hopkins, who hasn’t fought since easily outpointing Kelly Pavlik 11 months ago, was inclined to fight a tune-up bout. Schaefer said he was working on a plan under which Hopkins would fight in his hometown of Philadelphia against an opponent to be determined on the same day as Jones’ fight in Australia.

Under the terms of the agreement, Jones (54-5, 40 KOs) and Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs) agreed to split the revenue 50-50, which had always been the sticking point. If there is a knockout or a TKO, the winner of the fight will get 60 percent and the loser 40 percent.

“I don’t like that at all,” Jones, 40, said of the knockout provision. “I love it. I absolutely love it. Love it. That is all I can say. I’m definitely looking forward to this fight. The fans have wanted to see it for a long time. For the longest time, he wouldn’t take it. Now he’s taking it. I’m ecstatic. I can’t wait.”

Jones said he thought about pulling out of the Green fight but won’t because he had given his word and signed a contract. John Wirt, CEO of Jones’ promotional company, said Jones was receiving a “multimillion dollar payday” for the fight with Green.

“I’m in a very difficult situation,” said Jones, who would be 41 for the Hopkins fight. “I respect Green. I know we signed and I thought maybe I should just pull out. But I can’t deny Danny. This is one of the biggest fights in the history of his country. This is how it is. So I’ll give him the biggest fight in his country and that will get me ready for Hopkins and the biggest fight in my country. I’d rather let the Green fight go, but I’m a man of my word. It wouldn’t be fair to back out on him now.

“It’s time to take care of my business and then come back here and beat Bernard Hopkins.”

Before either man became a star, they met for a vacant middleweight title on May 22, 1993 with Jones winning a clear unanimous decision. Jones would go on to dominate the sport as the pound-for-pound king for about a decade and win titles in four divisions. Hopkins would later claim the middleweight title after Jones left the division and go on to make a division-record 20 defenses before moving up and claiming the light heavyweight championship.

“I beat him with one hand the first time,” Jones said of their first fight, in which he fought with a damaged right hand. “What am I worried about?”

The sides have other smaller issues to work out, such as which fighter gets first billing, who walks to the ring first and who is announced first.

Wirt said the sides agreed to settle all of the outstanding issues with a coin flip.

“This is a straight up 50-50 deal,” Wirt said. “We’ll settle everything with a coin flip. We’re going to have a commemorative coin made with Roy’s face on one side and Bernard’s on the other and use it to decide everything. We’d like to get that televised on ESPN. It would be fun.”

Schaefer and Wirt gave a lot of credit to HBO’s Mark Taffet for bringing the sides together. Jones had been on board with a 50-50 deal. Getting Hopkins, who would be 45 for the fight, was more difficult, but they made a lot of progress during a meeting in Las Vegas last week among between Schaefer, Hopkins and Taffet.

“There have been a lot of people who worked very hard, but a lot of credit goes to Mark, who shepherded this thing through and really helped make it happen,” Wirt said.

Schaefer said there is no site yet for the fight, but that he and Wirt would speak to venues in Las Vegas, New York and Atlantic City, N.J., although they preferred Las Vegas.

Mediaoutrage- We still want to see it.

Born January 16, 1969 in Pensacola Florida, Jones began boxing at an early age. In 1984 he won the United States National Junior Olympics in his weight class. Then he won two National Golden Gloves titles before ending his ameteur career with a 121-13 record. Jones won a silver medal in the 1988 Olympics, as he defeated every fighter without losing a single round, but controversy saw him lose in the gold medal match against South Korean fighter Park Si-Hun, although he destroyed him from start to finish. As a professional, Jones fought the top competition early in his career with wins over Jorge Vaca, Jorge Castro, Benard Hopkins, and a convincing win over then champion, James “Lights Out” Toney. Outside of a fight against Virgil Hill and Mike McCallum, Jones seemingly fought unfit opponents for years to come. Often criticized for fighting “Cans,” and his pursuit for a secondary career in music and basketball, Jones stepped up on January 3rd, 2003 to win the Heavyweight title against John Ruiz. But as the Light Heavyweight division started to become stacked with competition, Jones lost 3 fights in a row. After winning a controversial decision against Antonio Tarver, which many ringside scored the fight for Tarver, the two fought in a rematch 6 months later. Tarver knocked out Jones in the 2nd round with a devastating right hand and shocked the world. In Roy’s comeback fight, he would be knocked out again, this time in the 9th by Glen Johnson. In the third fight with Antonio Tarver, Jones would lose convincingly by a unanimous decision on October 1st, 2005. He would then put together a 3 fight win streak, one over Felix Trinidad, before being dominated by Joe Calzaghe. After a nice win over Jeff Lacy, talks between Jones and Hopkins began about a rematch. The two woud have to win their upcoming fights, with Hopkins fighting Enrique Ornelas and Jones taking on Danny Green. Hopkins dominated Ornelas in a 12 round unanimous decision, but Jones was knocked out in the first round after getting pummeled by a right hand. With the Jones loss, the rematch all but may be over, as the stock in seeing this fight has plummeted. And now one begs to ask the question, Is Roy Jones done? Roy is 5-4 in his last 9 fights with two of his wins coming by TKO, but three of his losses resulting in knockouts. Without a big payday ahead and the possible rematch of him and Hopkins losing its luster, this may be the end of Roy Jones Jr. Personally, I do think we will see him once more in a fight in his home town of Pensacola, but it won’t be against Hopkins.

I was all pumped to watch the highly anticipated showdown (in Australia anyway) between Danny Green

I was all pumped to watch the highly anticipated showdown (in Australia anyway) between Danny Green and the ‘legendary’ Roy Jones Jr in Sydney on the night of 2 December 2009. Unfortunately I was stuck at work until midnight, though fortunately I managed to find a forum that was providing live updates.

So I see a post about Roy’s gay ring entrance. Great, I say, the fight’s about to start. Next upload a couple of minutes later…WTF? Roy Jones Jr just got KNOCKED OUT! Round 1. By Danny Green. The Danny Green that was supposedly too slow, too methodical, too dumb. It was the most shocking result I never expected to see. A Danny Green win I could see. A KO win, perhaps. But Round 1? You’re a liar if you say you saw that coming.

I felt terrible for the fans who waited on the edge of their seat all night through the crappy undercards and delays, and blah, all over in 122 seconds. Great value for money. On the other hand, I felt relieved that I didn’t make the trek down to watch the fight on the big screen, not when the fight was available on YouTube in its entirety shortly after it was all over.

Since then I have watched the fight about half a dozen times. Here, you can too, thanks to YouTube. It’ll only take a couple of minutes.

Is there much point in recapping or analysing? Contrary to the opinion of Jones groupies who refuse to realise this is a 40-year-old man who has been brutally knocked out twice (and has never been the same since), Roy Jones Jr did not throw the fight. He was, as always, cautious in the first round, but I think it was clear he wasn’t prepared for Green’s pressure. In the 122 seconds the fight lasted, Jones only threw left jabs. Not a single right hand, not a single left-handed power shot. All he did was back up and jab. It only took Green 30 seconds to corner him for the first time and land some decent punches.

And the overhand right that knocked Jones down (74 seconds in) and effectively ended the fight landed in virtually the exact same way and the exact same spot as Glen Johnson did back in September 2004 – right in the temple – except back then, Jones didn’t get up for more than 3 minutes. They say once you get knocked out like that, you’re never the same, and that was Roy’s second consecutive brutal KO (the first coming in his previous fight against Antonio Tarver some 4 months earlier). Maybe Jones has a glass head (ala his mate Anthony Mundine), but he has always dropped his left hand low. Back in the day when he had unparalleled reflexes, he could get away with that, but at 40 years old, it became a massive opportunity for Danny Green.

The fight probably should have been stopped earlier when Green pounced on Jones immediately after the knockdown, where Jones was fed a steady diet of ripping shots without throwing back or even attempting to tie up his opponent. But the referee allowed things to go on (perhaps not wanting to be criticised for ending things too quickly), and for a while, it almost looked like Jones was going to last the round. So I suppose there is some merit in arguing that the referee stopped the fight prematurely, but when a fighter doesn’t do anything except get pounded against the ropes for almost a full minute and with 40 seconds still to go in the round, you can’t fault the referee for stepping in.

To be honest, few people around the world cared about this fight (which is why it happened in Australia, where the time zone ousted the majority of boxing fans in the US and Europe). The people that did were probably already looking forward to the now-in-tatters, 17-years-in-the-making fight between Jones and Bernard Hopkins. However, this didn’t stop the Australian media from billing this as the biggest fight the country had ever seen. Sadly, it may have been true.

Jones got paid a reported $10 million for making the trip down under. That’s $5 million per minute in the ring. I’m sure he wanted to win, but I think he’s more disappointed about the fight with Hopkins going down the drain (as Hopkins won his ‘tune-up’ fight) than losing to Danny Green.

Where to now for both fighters? I think there is a chance they Jones-Hopkins II could still go ahead. When mega money is involved, anything can happen, and Hopkins has already been trying to talk down the loss.

Of course, Danny Green and his team think (erroneously) that they are now going to get the big bucks. I don’t think so. Yes, Jones will go down in history as one of the greatest of his era, but the win won’t open up the type of lucrative deals they think will start flooding in. Not to say Green isn’t a solid fighter capable of beating the top fighters, but let’s put things in perspective. Green was relatively unknown outside Australia before the fight, Jones was way past his prime, the fight took place in Australia, and most of all – Green just doesn’t have the requisite charisma or flashy style to be a superstar. They are already talking about possibly going up to heavyweight to take on 147-year-old Evander Holyfield. Seriously.
