American artist Roy Lichtenstein was inspred by American comic book art. Lichtenstein took the artform of the comic book and finely tuned it’s graphic qualities. His painting technique borrows heavily from the graphical syntax associated with comic books. i.e. Speech bubbles, sound effects, the graphical line and the printing process itself in the technique of using dots to alter the shade and tone of a coloured area.

David Barsalou (DECONSTRUCTING ROY LICHTENSTEIN) has uploaded some interesting ‘before and after’ scans of the original comic book artwork and Lichtenstein’s paintings.

“The big tradition, I think, is unity. And I have that in mind; and with that, you know, you could break all the traditions- all the other so-called rules, because they are stylistic.. and most are not true. As long as the marks are related to one another, there is unity. Unity in the work itself depends on unity of the artist’s vision.”

Welcome back to The Rival Rundown! If you’ve always wanted to give props to your school on CC, now’s your chance! Shoot us an email explaining what’s awesome and unique about your school (or what stinks about Rival U) at rivalrundown@collegecandy.com!

This is it, folks, the grand daddy of all college rivalries! Noted by ESPN as the greatest North American sports rivalry today, the bad blood between the University of Michigan and the Ohio State University is unequaled. This weekend marks the one hundred and sixth meeting of the two teams, in the last regular-season football game. If you don’t happen to be one who bleeds maize and blue, or scarlet and gray, now’s your chance to catch up on the rivalry that will be on the tips of everyone’s tongues this week.

Quick Facts:
University of Michigan: Public research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Enrollment of over 50,000. Mascot is the Wolverine.
Ohio State University: Public research university in Columbus, Ohio. Enrollment of over 50,000. Mascot is the Buckeye.

1. Football Victories

Michigan: 52 wins, 42 losses, 3 ties
Ohio State: 42 wins, 52 losses, 3 ties

Three credits to: Michigan. The Wolverines have also won 42 Big Ten conference titles (compared to Ohio State’s 33) and 11 national titles (compared to the Buckeyes’ 7).

2. Memorable Moments

Michigan: In one of the most famous football games in history, the 1950 Wolverines fought their way to victory 9-3 in Columbus. In what is known to history as the “Snow Bowl,” the match took place in one of the worst Ohio blizzards on record. Before its start, Ohio State had the option of forfeiting the game and retaining the Big 10 championship title. However, since they decided to play, the two teams duked it out in the cold and snow, punting 45 times, occasionally on first downs. Michigan stealing the victory, and the title, on enemy turf? How sweet it was!
Ohio State: In the 1973 match-up between the Wolverines and the Buckeyes, both teams entered the game undefeated. The match would decide the Big 10 conference champion and which team would travel to the national championship at the Rose Bowl. When the game ended in a heart-wrenching tie, athletic directors of the other Big 10 conference schools had to vote by secret ballot for their choice of a winner. Ultimately, OSU became the victor, in what was one of the most legendary games in history.

Three credits to: Ohio State. With stakes raised to the limit–a conference championship, a trip to the Rose Bowl, and a tie with your most storied rival–having the confidence of your fellow conference members is something to relish.

3. Terrific Traditions

Michigan: American composer John Philip Sousa, who made a career of writing march songs, once declared the UM march song “the greatest college fight song ever written.” Called “The Victors,” it has not only been played on the field and at commencement, but as the entrance theme song (in lieu of Hail to the Chief) for proud alum President Gerald Ford.
Ohio State: A seemingly cliche quote by one of OSU’s coaches turned into a legendary tradition for the Buckeyes. When asked about how he he planned to approach the Wolverines, Ohio State coach Francis Schmidt said, “They put their pants on one leg at a time same as everyone else.” Since then, the “Golden Pants Club” has awarded statues of golden pants to each OSU Buckeye who has scored a victory over Michigan.

In 1961 Lichtenstein began his first pop paintings in which he used cartoon images and techniques which were influenced by the from the appearance of commercial printing. His first peice of hard-work was ‘Look Mickey’, created in 1961. The peice of artwork was created when on eof his sons pointed to a mcikey mouse picture in a comic book and challenged his dad to draw like that..

He also became famous for his other peices of art work such as ‘Drowning girl’ and ‘Whaam!’ During these times Lichtenstein created lots of peices of artwork which helped him rise to fame.

From time to time, some of the Brooks staffers like to take a long lunch and go on a field trip. Who doesn’t like a field trip? Last week we went to visit our friends over at the Dixon to see their new shows Lichtenstein in Process and Carry Me! Lucite Handbags from the Caryn Scheidt Collection.

Attending our excursion was Lindsey (head of Art of Good Taste fundraising events), Bob (grant writer), Heather (graphic designer), Erica (visitor services and social media guru), and myself (film programmer and sometimes blogger).

It was a gorgeous day – a nice break from the rain – so we had a brown bag lunch in the gardens. Then we went in to see the exhibits. We started with Lichtenstein, a collection of the Pop artist’s studies, drawings, and collages. I found it fascinating to see how the artist begins to compose the colors, shapes, and forms that eventually became his final work. We also enjoyed picking out the various materials he used – colored tape, carefully cut and painted paper, even tinfoil!

Private Collection © Estate of Roy Lichtenstein

Then we headed in to Carry Me, a beautiful collection of Lucite handbags from the 1940s to the 60s. These smooth, glossy, almost futuristic shapes come speckled with rhinestones, metal confetti, gold netting, and lace. I loved how they glittered and shone in light.

Collection of Caryn Scheidt.

Both shows definitely worth checking out. All in all a wonderful lunch break – I encourage you all to take a long lunch (go on, your boss won’t mind) and check out some of the great museums around town… Tomorrow we’re headed to the Metal Museum for the Elizabeth Brim show!

My clever female friend and classmate asked me today about her costume:

1. A “Road” Costume, replete with broken lines throughout my whole body, simple gray or black clothing, a sign that says “Curves Ahead”, a orange cone, “Hazard”, “Men at Work” and “Bump.”

Or

2. A “Stimulus Package” costume: simple clothing with “Bonus” written out, as well as “Investments (or Jobs)”, and “Stimulus Plan Unveiled” written across my chest.

Tis truly a good question.

NUDE WITH TAN LINES by Bob Kessel

I have refrained from using dots in the past when making my Roy Lichtenstein inspired prints. If I use dots, I come perilously close to plagerism. But, if you notice, the dots in Lichtenstein’s art are on a different plane than the line drawing. The dots are there only to represent a halftone from 4 color comic printing. My thinking was, what if one of the dots actually represented something on the line art picture plane? But i decided to use them this time in a witty way. (at least to me it seems witty) I thought it would be funny to use the dot as a nipple in a nude. The white is bathing suit tan line, which isolates one red dot that represents a nipple.

SOLD! by Bob Kessel

Another Roy Lichtenstein dots picture. There is usually a paper card with title of artwork next to pictures in gallery. When a picture is sold, the gallery puts a red dot sticker next to it. The large circle represents a spot light, which usually is on artwork in gallery. For me it echoes the circular dot theme and gives interest to the “negative” space (that is if you consider the “painting of dots” to be the “positive” space, even though it is open to the surrounding white paper and therefore by definition “nothing”. WHEW! Does that make any sense?

From the Los Angeles Times:

Brandeis University President Jehuda Reinharz, who acknowledged mishandling plans to close a school art museum, will resign after the current academic year, university officials said Friday.

Reinharz, 65, president since 1994, agreed to continue serving through the end of the 2009-10 academic year, according to an e-mailed statement from the school in Waltham, Mass.

Reinharz said in an e-mail to students and faculty that he expects “to be the president of a significant foundation, where I can address issues facing the Jewish community at the national and international level.”

Brandeis said Jan. 26 that it would close the Rose Art Museum and intended to sell works by artists including Andy Warhol and Willem de Kooning after the school suffered investment losses and some donors were hurt by Bernard Madoff’s fraud. Days later, students called for a sit-in protest, and the chairman of the Brandeis fine arts department said the school would lose an “irreplaceable” teaching tool.

Reinharz said in February that he mishandled some aspects of the decision and apologized for a lack of openness about the trustees’ deliberations. On Sept. 18, a school committee recommended that the museum remain open and that Brandeis take steps to “better integrate” it into the school’s mission.
