During my Words and Images class today, we viewed the film adaption of the manga Battle Royale, written by Koushun Takami.

The movie depicts a dystopian future in which classes are selected by lottery to participate in a game. The children are supplied with food, water, and a weapon, ranging from a paper fan to an automatic machine gun, and told to kill each other. Only one survivor will remain in the end, and if nobody is killed, everyone will be killed by the detonation of a metal collar around their neck. 

Quite honestly, it was one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen. I’m not sure why anyone would think to make a comic about this situation, let alone adapting it to a film. Thankfully, the blood and gore was far from realistic, making it very easy to distance yourself from the suffering the characters experience, but I still could not shake the overall feeling of injustice at the entire situation. The ending, while slightly romantic, leaves us with the realization that while this couple did “beat the game” by managing to escape the island together, every single one of their other classmates was brutally murdered. 

One reason this movie really struck a chord with me is the fact that I have been recently researching the politics of the G20 Summit meetings and the recent talk of a New World Order that politicians are referring to more and more often. Battle Royale clearly demonstrates the way a government can exercise absolute power over its citizens when it has an alternative agenda to the citizens’ interests. To imagine that such levels of control could be on their way for our society is absolutely horrifying.

It is interesting to think about the fact that Americans are so unaware of the way the world is run these days. After watching a few documentaries, I have realized that, at the very least, these issues demand attention. Without the awakening of many citizens to the tyranny of those in control, our grandchildren could be experiencing events just as dehumanizing as Battle Royale.

Tomorrow I’m heading home to the Poconos for Thanksgiving break. Tonight was an interesting night… I spent my night class watching the Japanese video adaptation of the manga Battle Royale, a vision of a dystopian future where children are selected and placed on a deserted island and told to kill each other. They are told that only one survivor will remain in the end. Within the first 10 minutes, the movie turns into a constant death match, intertwined with poorly translated subtitles. 

After class, I returned home and spent some time watching a few of Alex Jones’ documentaries on the possible changes going on in the political world today. In terms of the band, it reminded me of a song we had started during our last time playing together. After explaining how surreal the events of the G20 Summit were for me here in Pittsburgh, Peewee immediately began writing. I was impressed by how quickly he got his ideas flowing, especially because I hadn’t even considered writing a song on my feelings about the entire situation. 

Now that we are really beginning to flesh out our entire message, I am realizing that we are really part of the resistance to dehumanization that the corporate world is attempting right now. Alex Jones outlines their methods in a few documentaries, all available on youtube for free. Our message is about the intrinsic value each of us holds as a unique human being. The time has come to stand up for our freedoms and insist that the government works for the people, not the other way around.

C’est peut-être par charité chrétienne. Toujours est-il que Christine Boutin n’est pas rancunière, elle sollicite « la clémence des juges » pour Jacques Chirac. C’est pourtant lui qui, il y a dix ans, promulguait la loi n° 99-944 relative au pacte civil de solidarité. Elle avait mené la fronde anti-Pacs, et la France entière a gardé à l’esprit la scène magnifiquement théâtrale où Christine Boutin, criant à l’hérésie, brandit la Bible devant un hémicycle de « dépités ». Cette image de 5 secondes en dira plus long sur sa colère que les 6 heures de son discours fleuve à la tribune du Palais Bourbon. Aujourd’hui, le Pacs et ses quelque 500 000 couples font partie du paysage nuptial. Christine Boutin en parle d’autant plus librement qu’elle a été contrainte au… divorce gouvernemental par le dernier remaniement, et elle compte bien peser à la tête du parti chrétien-démocrate. Elle a la croix et la bannière…

Dix ans après, le succès du Pacs est un camouflet pour vous ?

Pas du tout. Ce débat passionné était sans doute incontournable. Il a été mené avec agitation par une minorité de militants sous prétexte d’une attente forte des homosexuels pour obtenir un statut. à l’époque, j’affirmais déjà que ce n’était pas le cas, et qu’il était possible de répondre à la demande légitime sur l’égalité des droits, dans les domaines social, fiscal, du logement, etc. en modifiant les codes concernés plutôt que de créer un statut. Dix ans plus tard, je constate que les Français sont plus intelligents que les politiques, puisque ce sont les hétérosexuels qui se sont emparés du Pacs à 94 %.

Et puis la France détient des records en matière de natalité…

Il n’y a de richesse que d’hommes, disait le philosophe Jean Bodin. Tant mieux si notre démographie est une des plus dynamiques d’Europe, mais la situation est fragile et la France a souvent été en deçà du seuil de renouvellement des générations. Or, les enfants qui ne naissent pas sont des enfants qui manquent à l’avenir.

Mais une statistique révèle en gros qu’il y a un divorce pour deux mariages et seulement une dissolution pour dix Pacs…

Cela traduit la difficulté à s’engager dans la durée, peut-être parce que la vie est plus longue. Mais je crois profondément que lorsqu’un couple s’installe dans la durée, il y a des hauts et des bas, et surmonter les bas conforte durablement la relation.

Même Act-up juge la victoire du Pacs amère parce que l’inégalité des droits perdure…

Au niveau des droits fiscaux, par exemple, la différence est minime. Mais j’attire l’attention des couples hétérosexuels sur une chose à mes yeux essentielle : quand on se marie ou qu’on se pacse, on ne pense pas assez à une éventuelle séparation. Si elle intervient, le mariage protège le plus fragile du couple, la femme le plus souvent, alors que le Pacs n’offre aucune protection. Mais pour en revenir à votre question, ce que revendiquent ces associations depuis dix ans, c’est le mariage homosexuel, et j’estime qu’on s’en rapproche déjà beaucoup !

Redouteriez-vous que la France emboîte le pas à l’Espagne, un pays pourtant très catholique, et célèbre un jour les unions homosexuelles ?

Je ne le souhaite pas pour la France, et l’engagement du Président de la République était très clair à ce sujet, mais il y a des lobbies importants qui oeuvrent pour y parvenir. Ce qui m’intéresse, ce n’est pas l’intérêt à l’enfant, mais l’intérêt de l’enfant.

Justement, comment réagissez-vous à la décision du tribunal administratif du Jura qui autorise l’adoption à une institutrice homosexuelle ?

Elle met en lumière une contradiction de la loi française sur l’adoption accordée aux célibataires, à la suite d’une affaire douloureuse et ancienne où une tante célibataire avait pu adopter ses cinq neveux dont les parents étaient morts dans un accident. Et il y avait un parlementaire dans la famille. Depuis, un certain nombre d’enfants sont élevés par des couples homosexuels qui ont détourné la loi. Il faut sortir de cette hypocrisie, et se fonder sur le fait qu’un enfant a besoin d’un papa et d’une maman pour se construire psychologiquement pour interdire l’adoption par un célibataire.

Vous en voulez à Christian Estrosi de célébrer le Pacs en mairie ?

Il a surtout envie d’être à la mode. Je reprends le mot de Kundera : être dans le vent est une vocation de feuille morte…

Rama Yade, elle, ne l’est plus, à la mode, au gouvernement…

Je vais déjeuner très prochainement avec elle et on se parlera…

Vous avez été plus discrète lorsque Frédéric Mitterrand a été méchamment attaqué…

Ce qui a déclenché la polémique, ce n’est pas son livre, dont je me suis forcée à lire les passages incriminés, mais son soutien à Roman Polanski. Frédéric Mitterrand a eu raison d’évoquer l’honneur de sa famille, mais quand on est ministre, l’honneur de la France compte aussi.

La Cour européenne des Droits de l’Homme a raison d’estimer que la présence de crucifix dans les écoles en Italie est une atteinte à la liberté de conscience ?

Le projet de traité constitutionnel avait rejeté la référence aux racines chrétiennes de l’Europe. Là encore, on est à côté de la plaque. Je ne comprends pas cette focalisation. Notre Constitution consacre une République laïque, indépendante, qui respecte toutes les religions.

Que pensez-vous de l’idée d’un référent social pour chaque SDF ?

Elle est aussi généreuse que difficile à mettre en oeuvre, surtout lorsqu’on parle de trois millions de sans-abri.

Dans le cadre du débat sur l’identité nationale, vous avez sollicité les internautes pour écrire de nouvelles paroles à La Marseillaise. Vous avez été entendue ?

Bien sûr. C’est toujours avec joie et fierté que je chante l’hymne national, comme ce fut encore le cas pour les cérémonies du 11 novembre. Mais depuis la guerre de 40, le « sang impur » n’a plus la même signification…

Vous irez aux régionales avec le parti chrétien-démocrate ?

Mon parti, membre fondateur de l’UMP, a joué la fidélité et la loyauté de façon constante. Cette fois-ci, j’ai émis un certain nombre de demandes raisonnables et si elles ne devaient pas être globalement prises en compte, je conduirais une liste autonome en région Pays de Loire où j’ai des attaches fortes.

Vous avez toujours une Bible dans votre sac à main ?

Pas toujours, mais souvent.

Ça vous blesse d’être brocardée pour vos tenues vestimentaires strictes ou lorsqu’on donne de vous l’image d’une bigote ?

En tant qu’être humain, je n’y suis pas insensible, même si cela ne m’atteint pas trop profondément. L’essentiel est d’avoir un mari, des enfants, une famille qui vous aiment.

Et Ségolène Royal a-t-elle raison d’envoyer des chèques contraception aux mineures de sa région ?

Ségolène Royal commet une erreur. La pédagogie de l’amour, c’est autre chose qu’un chèque pour payer la pilule !

A weekday night in Brooklyn – went out for some interesting live music .  First, Allison Miller (drums) /Ellery Eskelin (tenor sax) /Brad Jones (bass) trio @ Barbes. It was pretty crowded. I liked the trio a lot too – some very creative music.

And then Le Grand Dakar @ 285 Grand Ave, Clinton Hill, – an African restaurant with great live music bookings -  featuring Todd Sickafoose (double bass, compositions) with Jenny Scheinman on violin and Pete Robbins on sax that night. Was interesting music (with a little weird intonation at times), but for playing and listening didn’t seem to be the best spot ever, I guess – too much of a restaurant vibe, especially when most people show up to have family dinner.

And then Royale on 5h Ave for the Tuesday night jam session, this time with Nir Felder’s band (Allison Miller on drums, Gary Wang on bass and a sax player ) playing the opening and closing set. They did standards and a really good new original ballad of Nir’s that they were to read on the spot.

Since I don’t want to drink beer anymore it’s a shame most bars here don’t serve tea and coffee. So it’s either an $8-glass of wine or – soda?

Saturday was an incredible day for myself, the city of Toronto, the Philippine Islands and the world in general. It may be a reach (for some) to believe that the world had a great day because of a fundraiser at Tota Lounge, but I look at it like this:

We had that venue almost full within an hour of opening the doors and by 11pm we were pretty much at capacity, which we surpassed shortly after. The community really came together to show their support for a truly great cause and I want to show my appreciation to each & every person that came through with money, good vibes and great intentions.

The minimum donation was $5, but I know a lot of people donated more to get some great prizes and help our brothers/sisters in the Philippines (and other Asian countries affected by Ketsana)

So far, the official tally is above $2,200 CDN. and I will still be accepting donations until Sunday November 1st before I officially close up the cash box and make our donation(s)

Although, I will accept responsibility for booking the venue/talent and organizing a team of dedicated & talented individuals, I cannot take credit for the amazing results that followed.

I owe a huge amount of thanks to many people, so if I forget your name or do not mention you, please let me know! If you helped out in any way, you are appreciated, please forgive my memory at this time

Mensa – The first person I asked, I knew you would be down to support this event and lend your skills. You graciously accepted and I applaud not only your performance at the event, but your willingness to go above & beyond for a cause that I know means a great deal to you. Salute!

Surreal Sound – Not being Filipino did not stop you from donating your time and spreading the word about this event, I respect the fact that you treated it like a true professional all the way through. From promoting to your friends via word of mouth or by posting it up as your Facebook status, every little bit helped. Early R&B and the late Hip Hop set were large! Salute!

Royale – It was really important for me to have you a part of this event and I’m glad you were down. From the food to the actual culture/customs, neither one of us is extremely “Filipino” (by traditional standards) but, I guarantee you that this is something that Mom & Pop Padilla are proud of. Bozack & Atic – My two dudes that are 0% Filipino but, are just guilty by association! When I needed graphic designer and a co-host this was a no brainer. I needed two people who were great at what they do, willing to help and it was only right.  The flyer & prize vouchers were so on point and I think it’s something that meant a lot more to the partygoers then we realize. Also, being able to run around the venue to check on the team and partygoers was very easy to do when you trust your co-host. Salute, Salute!

Bezel: Quality work as usual homie, thank you for stepping up and stepping in last minute to capture the energy of the event! It just wouldn’t have been complete without some flicks and I can’t wait to share them with everyone. I swear I won’t take forever to get the pics, like last time. LOL

As reported in my last post, Asia has been hit with a catastrophic storm, as wind and rain continue to damage many countries, including: Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos & Cambodia.

The Death toll continues to rise (over 400) and many are still missing or unaccounted for…

Like many across the globe, I have decided to lend a helping hand and I’ve organized an event with a few of Toronto’s best DJs to help raise some funds and raise some fun for Ketsana (aka Ondoy)

This is kind of a continuation of yesterdays tutorial, we are taking the theme-switching to a new level, allowing the user to switch themes whenever they want to.

Requirements

Before you begin there are a few things that you need.

• Visual Studio / Visual Basic 2008 Express

Just Beginning…

Firstly, you need to start by either creating a new blank project, or opening your WPF project.  Start by putting 6 radio buttons with the appropriate names. Aero, Classic, Luna, Luna Homestead, Luna Metallic and Royale. You can add other controls if you wish, this is what you should have now.

Okay so now we have a functional radio button layout, we just need to add the code for when they are checked. Firstly, click on the Aero radio button, and then click on Properties, events and find the ‘Click’ event. Give it a good name like ‘AeroTheme’ or something, once you hit enter you will go into a code editor.  Above the newly created sub, add this line of code:

Basically, this creates a new ResourceDictionary for us to use. Now in that newly created sub, add inside this following code.

Requirements

Firstly, if you do not have a project to test it on, I would recommend you make one and try it as you read this, as it makes things a whole lot easier for you.

Next, on the Solution Explorer, double click on “Application.xaml”, this is where it will all take place. You should now be in the code editor and see this code in there.

In between the Application.Resources tags, add this to enable the Windows Classic theme:

Once the code is in there, hit F5 and run the program. You will see that all of your default button and control have had their styles changed to the Windows Classic theme.

To add Vista’s Aero theme, replace the Windows Classic ResourceDictionary with this:

And you will notice that it has Vista’s Aero theme, even if you are on XP. And finally,to add XP’s Luna theme to the user controls, replace the ResourceDictionary with this:
