Get to know Detroit through this video.  Black Milk is easily one of the best producer/rappers in hip-hop right now and Royce Da 5′9 is one of the surliest. If you’ve never seen it before, peep the video for “Losing Out” off of Black Milk’s ridiculously hot Tronic album. Gotta love the Hex Murda cameo. This is the definition of Detroit heat. Royce just dropped a new album less than two months ago called Street Hop. Check that out over here.

With the end of the year quickly approaching and this being  the last 1st Friday of 2009, it’s time for Top 5 Fridays Hip Hop Albums of the year:

5. David Banner Death of a Pop Star

Actually, this album hasn’t even been released yet but thanks to 9th Wonder’s YouTube series called De Blog Jam (Filmed and edited by 9th’s keyboardist E. Jones) I witnessed them create almost the entire album. Even better is the fact that the album is free. Its quality far surpasses many records that you had to pay for this year. By the way, did I mention that 9th Wonder produced it? It features many of 9th’s homegrown N.C. talent plus a smoother more mature flow from Banner. Google it.

4. Slaughterhouse Slaughterhouse

I was having a random Twitter conversation one day and this dude was telling me that he prefers a brand of emcee who spends more time actually rapping than he does talking about how good he is. Slaughterhouse is definitely not that brand of emcee but these guys back up everything they say. They are lyrical beasts that grew tired of the usual bureaucracy of major labels and took their careers in their own hands. Comprised of Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5′9″ & Crooked I, they crafted the blueprint for today’s independent artists. During the 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards Show cipher Joe Budden said, “I never needed my A&R my A&R needed me.” I guess he doesn’t need an A&R.

3. Wale Back to the Feature

This wasn’t even an album, it was a mixtape! (See Drake below) Another free venture produced by 9th Wonder and mixed by Nick Catchdubs, its stacked with guest features including Jean Grae & Freeway. This was really something special because it’s not everyday you find quality hip hop like this.

2. Jay-Z Blueprint III

What can I say about this (See archives for song by song review of Blueprint III) except that my grandmother was singing Run This Town. Another classic Jay-Z album with the hottest everything in the game; guest features, beats, verses…everything.

Ok, browsing my Zune’s new channels and found this song: Slaughterhouse – Onslaught 2. The joint is vicious, and I think real music fans should appreciate this song. If you don’t know who Slaughterhouse is, it’s a supergroup composing of Joe Budden, Joelle Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce da 5′9″. Also got a short interview of the group after the jump.

Since appearing on Joe Budden’s Halfway House, Slaughterhouse has continued to break barriers in terms of lyricism and has maintained their presence on the scene since their debut album back in July.

As the group has taken time out to deliver their solo releases, Royce Da 5’9” has dropped Street Hop and EPs have come from the likes of Budden and Crooked I with Joell Ortiz set to drop his project in February.

Even with the expectations in the solo projects, fans are still salivating and anticipating the next project from the group.  Any mention of a Slaughterhouse track dropping leaves fans rapidly searching as if they have become an audio crack.

Speaking on Sound Session, Royce spoke on the general focus now as the year comes to a close and where his mindset is in regards to the group.

“I’m focused on the group in terms of the next move with signing.  Shady is an option.  It’s been a lot of great conversations being had.  Hopefully something like that can happen.  Our goal is to put the group album on a major and really get a real machine behind it so we can put that balance back in Hip Hop.”

Nickel also reflected on the sales that have been projected for the album and the fact that no matter what the numbers say, the group is very happy with the overall reception of their first outing.

“It’s mixed in terms of, a lot of people look at numbers and I don’t think they really know what they’re looking at.  I don’t like to get so technical with explaining how many the label shipped out and what percentage of the shipment did we sell.  What we did at Best Buy.  To us, it was a great success.  We were very happy because it was up in the air.  We was wondering could a huge Internet buzz factor out in sales.”

Essentially brothers, the Detroit MC adds that there is only one way to truly solidify their friendship and their brotherhood.

“I think all we need to do now is get into a fist fight with each other and make up.  Then we’re officially as close as we can be.”

Establishing the difference between quarrels with men and women, the rapper looked back on how Budden and himself let the past go when they started working together. 

“It’s the same thing with me and Joey when we almost had a beef before we got cool with each other.  He took a shot at me on a record, I started taking shots back, in normal Royce fashion, that’s what I do when it bother me.  When he called me to get on the actual “Slaughterhouse” song, we never talked about our issues.  We didn’t even discuss it.  He called me like we never had an issue.”

In regards to the fans, hopefully the next move will come sooner than later as the group has left an imprint as they initially set out to do and fans are impatiently waiting for their next hit of lyrical satisfaction from the quartet. 

Soon after Slaughterhouse came through Sound Session, Royce returned to Seattle for another show and dropped by the studio again. This time, we wrapped up the Slaughterhouse project and looked towards his newly released Street Hop album. We also discussed his relationship with Eminem in detail, including his first interaction with Em and the early Bad Meets Evil sessions. It was a real dope convo covering a bunch of topics, so I’ve broken them up into 3 parts again. – DJ Hyphen

LEADERS OF THE NEW OLD SCHOOL

Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes have been at it for a loooong time.

And while still relevant to the culture, Doggystyle and the Coming would definitely be considered Old School to today’s youth.  That being said, it really is a testament to the grind and pedigree of these two that they’ve been able to stay atop the food chain without completely losing that character we’ve all come to know and love.

Coming together once again for a remix of Snoop’s new badass banger, I Wanna Rock, Busta comes and shows some East Coast love to the West Coast Don.

THE ‘D’ TO THE ‘A’

Royce and Cee-Lo.

Not a collab I would’ve ever thought of, but a dope one nonetheless.  Royce is obviously heavy with his pen game and Cee-Lo, well, I’d go so far as to say he’s one of hip-hop’s most under appreciated lyricists and spitters ever.  Not to mention versatile.  I do love his singing voice plenty, but much like Andre 3000, I think their singing stuff is dope, but I really want them to get back to some good ol’ spitting, if only for just one album.

Luckily for us, Goodie Mob seems to be reunited and working together again, meanwhile we’re still waiting on that Slaughterhouse/Aftermath deal to be confirmed.

Anyway, on with the show…

Off their self-titled debut album

Mr. Porter was interviewed last night and he spoke on Eminem’s upcoming Relapse 2 album! He confirmed that the album is finished and will release in early 2010, He also went onto say Royce Da 5′9 will be on the album and the album is like sequel to the Marshall Mathers LP! - A lot of punchlines, clear minded Eminem.
- Not a lot of Quaky music, no songs like The Real Slim Shady.
- Royce Da 5′9 is on the album
