I augusti startade Röyksopp en remixtävling för att locka fram den extra potential som de ansåg att låten Tricky Tricky hade. Denna novembersöndag tänkte vi därför bjuda på inte mindre än två dansanta remixer på Röyksopps sommarhit Tricky Tricky (ja alla spåren på Junior var ju sommarhits). Beyond Deep och Horror Shower har skapat två ganska olika remixer av samma låt och vi gillar båda två. När den senare har ett mer rent minimalistiskt sound är den senare en dansgolvsdänga i högklassig electrostil.

Royksopp: The Girl and The Robot(ft Robyn)/Miss It So Much(Ft. Lykke Li)

Dance music can be a faceless and fickle genre that often lacks true stars or personalities who rise above the level of sonic wallpaper. Re-enter Royksopp, who with their newest album, Junior, have become one of the few electronic groups capable of sustaining momentum and consistency. And quite frankly with a guest list that includes three of the biggest Swedish singers of the past five years, it would’ve been almost impossible to make something not great. So for this list, lets look at their collaborations with two of them, Robyn and Lykke Li.
Robyn, who is still riding the wave created by international mega hit With Every Heartbeat, attacks the upbeat icy synth track, with gut-wrenching depression and brassy harmonies worthy of the golden age of R&B. The darkness adds a malice not usually associated with Royksopp’s club jams and combined with the nuanced production that adds subtle layers not evident on the first listen, it ends up a stellar work of modern electronica.
Girl and the Robot:

And then there’s the collaboration Lykke Li’s Miss It So Much which is on the totally opposite end of the sound spectrum. It’s a much simpler song, a constant bassline, with occasional synthy tribble that punctuates each verse, but what sells it is of course Lykke Li! She deserves her exclamtion mark, because it’s been a strong two years for Ms. Li.(strong debut album, strong remixes, great collaborations best epitomized by her turn on Kleerup’s until we bleed, big tour, absurd Lil Wayne covers) culminated with this arguably her best tune. I’m convinced by the fragile vocals on this song(as if the other ones didn’t convince me) that she could probably sing the phone book at this point and turn it into some moving lovelorn statement.
And yes there’s no single for this song, shameful, but I said songs of the year, not singles so there!

El pasado sábado 21 de noviembre será una noche para recordar. Sorprendente, no había un solo boleto disponible para ver a Röyksopp.

El concierto empezó por eso de las 9 y tantos, con un lleno del Salón Cuervo, como nunca lo había visto. Un calor terrible, pero eso si, muchas ganas de ver al dueto de Noruega.

Ante una increíble bienvenida de gritos y aplausos, Röyksopp salió al escenario a tocar algunas (porque faltaron muchas) de las canciones que estabamos esperando: This Must Be It, Remind Me,Happy Up Here, Tricky Tricky, The Girl And The Robot (aquí Svein se disfrazó del robot que aparece en el video), Eple, What Else, Only This Moment, So Easy, Poor Leno, Alpha Male.

La voz femenina fué de la cantante y actriz Anneli Marian Drecker, quien también es originaria de Noruega, y que ha colaborado con Röyksopp en los discos Melody A.M. y Junior.

Todo el concierto fue totalmente bailable, con muy buenos arreglos por parte de Röyksopp, quienes repitieron un par de veces que el público de esa noche, era uno de los mejores ante los que se habían presentado.

El after
Después del concierto, se hizo un after en un antro de la zona de Polanco, Torbjørn y Svein se animarón a tocar un set con muchas canciones e influencias ochenteras, para el deleite de los que estaban presentes.

Sin duda alguna, Röyksopp tendrá que volver a México.

Hola (again)!

Anoche fue LA noche: Röysopp se presentó en el José Cuervo Salón (tras la cancelación de lo que sería la segunda edición de Sonofilia).

¿Por dónde empiezo? ¿Por la calidad? ¿Por describir la multitud, la reventa, las playeras afuera? ¿Por que más de la mitad de los asistentes entraron tarde al concierto? ¿Por el “Los queremos un chingo” que Svein Berge pronunciara, haciendo vibrar a los asistentes? Elijo el orden para relatarles mi fascinación.

El venue: Sabemos que el José Cuervo Salón es pequeño… parece que hubo una sobreventa de boletos, pues no cabía ni un alfiler una vez que todos los asistentes ingresamos al recinto. Con todo, hubo quienes se quedaron sin boleto, y sé que algunos pases en reventa rondaron los $1,200, casi tres veces el costo de un boleto VIP.

La entrada y la seguridad: Pues ya saben, el típico dude que te promete pasarte rápido sin hacer fila; el amigo de un amigo que está formado hasta adelante y cuela a 10 personas, la impuntualidad típica de nosotros los mexicanos, la multitud y la confusión, todo se conjuntó para dar como resultado que más de la mitad de los asistentes ingresaran tarde al concierto. Una verdadera pena.

PN: La próxima vez, debo comprar el boleto VIP. Fui víctima de dos codazos en la cabeza.

El setlist: Abriendo con Röyksopp Forever*, regalando después éxitos del Junior como Happy Up Here, Tricky Tricky, You Don’t Have A Clue, The Girl And The Robot, Vision One, entre otros, Röyksopp demostró saber bien cómo ambientar la escena. Luego vino el momento de los yesterday hits, lo que creó un surf entre el Melody A.M. y el The Understanding: Only This Moment, So Easy, y más… la banda hizo temblar las paredes y cimientos del recinto al escuchar Eple y Poor Leno… un hermoso unreleased track titulado I Wanna Know y 2 encores, cuentan entre la voluntad de los noruegos por complacernos, y aún así nos quedamos con ganas de más de Röyksopp. La vibra mexicana siempre es tan intensa, tan buena… tanta entrega… Creo que a Svein y a Torbjørn sí les deben haber quedado ganas de volver pronto, tal como lo dijeran al final del evento.

Röyksopp: Contamos con la enérgica actuación del dúo, y el plus fue la presencia de Anneli Drecker (la voz en rolas como You Don’t Have A Clue o Sparks), quien cantó fenomenalmente. Los disfraces, el baile, la confianza** e interacción de los noruegos con nosotros, todo hizo del encuentro uno de los conciertos más memorables a los que he asistido este 2009. ¡Ya quiero que vuelvan de nuevo!

El cierre: Segundo track inédito de la noche (titulado Fat Burner), mismo que sí grabé , y cuyo video subiré en la semana.

En resumen, la actuación de Röyksopp anoche hará de ese concierto uno de los más inolvidables de este 2009… Punto.

Sientiéndome absolutamente Happy Up Here, me despido con mi ya conocido: Por lo pronto, xoxo …

I Heart Röyksopp

This is one of my three-day weekends and it’s been really sweet so far!

The Röyksopp show was amazing! I’m doing pretty well at picking awesome shows lately (Echo, Devo). They played a lot of songs from the newest CD Junior, but also some older stuff like “Poor Leno” and then ended the show with a new song. The audience was really into it. I was sitting upstairs and could observe the sea of people grooving on the floor in electronica heaven. I’ve been checking online, but it looks like nobody has posted the setlist. I found the one for the prior night’s show at Club Nokia in L.A. and it looks like they played the same set (except Robyn wasn’t at the S.F. show), so maybe I’ll post that later.

After the show I ended up walking home. It was freezing out and the next MUNI bus wasn’t coming for 15 minutes! Since it’s only 1.1 miles to my house (thank you, iPhone Map), I figured I’d get home sooner by walking. There weren’t too many weirdos out, so I made it home safe and sound.

I made myself stay up until Midnight, so maybe that’s the trick to being able to sleep. Get up at 5AM and stay up until Midnight! Of course, the only negative to that is that I slept until 7:30AM, so that wouldn’t be acceptable had it been a work day. Fortunately, Friday WASN’T a work day, so I was able to stay in bed and rest for a while before heading out to the gym for an hour o’ cardio.

Yesterday afternoon I went over to visit a friend who lives in Oakland. We sipped tea and talked and I received a tour of his remodeled pad. Very nice! We then had a little late-afternoon bubbly with some appetizers before heading to Picán for dinner. I had no idea there were so many restaurants so close to The Paramount, so I need to keep that in mind for the future.

Picán is a Southern-style restaurant and we had a great time and a wonderful meal! I had the Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken with the truffled honey table service. $2 seems a little steep for honey, but I figured I needed the real experience. The honey did add a nice flavor when it was drizzled all over the chicken, but could I tell that it was anything other than Sue Bee? Uh, no. The mac & cheese side was OK, but honestly, I like the neon orange stuff from Kraft better than most restaurant mac & cheese dishes. (Sorry, but it’s true!) The chicken was good though. My friend had the Bourbon and Molasses Laquered Duck and finished off the whole plate! For dessert we shared the Georgia Pecan Tart with Buttermilk ice cream. Yum! The ice cream was so nice and sour contrasted with the pecan tart. (Actually, we didn’t really share it. It was in the middle of the table between us, but I devoured most of it…then felt sick right after from eating too much!)

Today I’m just kind of hanging out and figuring out what to do with myself. I spent part of the morning dealing with my computer. I managed to back up all the files (I think), but now I need to figure out how to solve an issue that I’m having with the pages not loading. I’ll type for a while and then all of a sudden the pages won’t load and I have to restart the computer. Sometimes I even have to force quit because the Mail won’t close. It’s probably related to installing Snow Leopard, but I need to talk to an Apple Genius or something. If anyone out there can help, please send me a comment!

noti per “What else is there?” soprattutto nella versione di Trentmoeller che abbiamo sentito in tutte le discoteche del mondo, propongono nel loro album “The Understanding”, proprio appena prima della famosa traccia prima detta, Triumphant.

Triumphant, un pianoforte, una batteria un po’ trascinata e suoni sintetici che possono accompagnare 4:33 minuti della giornata.

Il video non è quello ufficiale, che non merita l’attenzione di nessuno, ma una geniale sequenza di riprese della natura.

Perciò premi play e continua a farti gli affari tuoi mentre ascolti ’sti due qua.

Impossibile non notare quando la musica..

2009 in Review by Decibel Festival Director Sean Horton

Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.

Yes, TGIT (not TGIF) because today’s the end of my week this week. I was just looking at a calendar and realized that I won’t be working another five-day week until next year. Woot! Let the fun begin.

Tonight is going to be a mad scramble to get to the gym for strength training class, walk home, shower and hit myself with a pretty stick (or try to), and head out to catch the bus to the Röyksopp show that starts at 8!

OK, there is an opening band, but I’m still under a time challenge, yo.

I’m looking forward to hearing “Happy Up Here,” but I like this song, too. I couldn’t get the “Official Video” to download from YouTube, so you can just close your eyes and listen…or just stare at the picture on the screen.

5º- Ray Guns are Not Only Just the Future- The Bird and the Bee

Através de canções muito agradáveis aos ouvidos, daquelas que parecem sorrir quando são executadas, o segundo álbum do duo americano lançado no ínicio do ano cria maravilhosas melodias que parecem complementar umas as outras ao decorrer dos 45 minutos e me provou que o eletrônico não precisa ser o 8 das músicas de pista nem o 80 do downtempo e do trip-hop e que o Indie pode muito bem ser Pop.

4º-Dance Mother- Telepathe

Sombrio, entorpecido e supreendente são três adjetivos que definem muito bem o debut das Nova-iorquinas do Telepathe, que já foi c omentado por aqui. Me encantei por suas enigmáticas faixas logo quando ouvi Devil’s Trident pela primeira vez. Me apaixonei pela sua obscuridade que luta para não ser logo quando terminei de ouvir o ‘Mother’ pela primeira vez. E descobri sua vastidão quando decidi escrever sobre.

3º- Röyksopp- Junior

Uma das maiores potências da música eletrônica nórdica, elogiadíssima pela crítica por seus álbuns antecessores e reconhecida mundialmente por músicas de grande repercussão como “What Else is There?” e “Remind Me” não poderia deixar lançar um dos melhores álbuns de música eletrônica, na minha opinião, da história. Apostando nas parcerias com cantoras populares no cenário Suécia-Noruega, como Robyn e a sensação Likke Ly, os noruegueses provar am toda sua competência com faixas que em poucas coisas remetem aos lançam entos anteriores, mas que ao mesmo tempo tem a marca da dupla, onde cada faixa tem suas próprias características e peculiaridades. Junior é, sem sombra de dúvida, obrigatório a qualquer um admirador do eletrônico chillout cujo Röyksopp é um grande representante.

2º- Florence and the Machine- Lungs

Ela é a voz. Eles, os encarregados de sustentá-las. Enquanto Florence narra de forma altamente metafórica e tocante suas paixões frustradas (e algumas até violentas), The Machine a segue usando harpas, baterias e mais uma infinidade de instrumentos que transformam cada unidade silábica arremessada pela vocalista em notas. O fervor atribúido por todos a cada faixa – como se esta fosse ser aúltima– faz Lungs ser inesquecível, das primeiras notas de “Dog Days Are Over” aos clamores advindos do fundo dos pulmões no cover ”You’ve Got The Love”. A vivacidade que a voz de Florence Welch concluí os elementos necessários para que uma das melhores compilações de músicas da década seja construída.

1º- Fever Ray- Fever Ray

Não poupo elogios quanto a este álbum, ou melhor, não tenho limites para falar bem de qualquer trabalho de Karin Dreijer Andersson. Sua estréia na carreira “solo” mostrou completamente o lado obscuro da enigmática figura de Karin, que adotara a personalidade de Fever Ray para compor canções profundas, capazes de hipnotizar até os mais céticos na música. Como é dito em “When I Grow Up”, ela parece mesmo pôr a alma no que faz, já que os fragmentos dela parecem estar jogado por entre as 12 faixas lançadas pela quase entidade Fever Ray, que se renova e recria o cenário ao seu redor a cada momento, trazendo novos personagens à densa camada formada por sintetizadores, instrumentos primitivos e uma imensidão de sons que recobre o álbum. A poesia dolorosa contida em cada verso alia-se ao sofrimento das múltiplas vozes de cada personagem para moldar algo entre o frio do desconhecido e a abstração da mente, deixando por critério de cada um o quão fundo chegar no esplêndido e singular mundo de Dreijer.

Semana passada fui tirar umas férias na Europa, muito chique. Minha primeira parada foi Amsterdam, no dia 6, meu aniversário. Por acaso estava rolando um show do Röyksopp lá no Melkweg, a principal casa de shows da cidade. Não sou muito fã dos caras não, mas por 20 Euros, tranquilo. E também teve outro ponto engraçado: os ingressos tinham esgotado, mas do nada apareceu uma mulher me oferecendo um que ela tinha sobrando. Encarei isso como um sinal.

Entrei, a casa cheia, bem quente, o show logo começou. Os caras vestidos com umas roupas estranhas, cheias de ornamentos, pareciam até fantasias de carnaval. Cada um assumiu seu teclado e sintetizador e começaram com um freestyle muito psicodélico (principalmente pra mim, que tinha passado antes num coffee shop). Muito bom.

Depois o show correu muito bem, com destaque para a cantora Anneli Drecker que interpretou muito bem todas as músicas com vocal feminino. Quem não se ligou, nem percebeu que não era a Karin Dreijer ou a Robyn cantand0.
