My cold left me behind and playing catchup on various chores. I lost around four days from the onset/onslaught of the cold the night of my set at the artspace benefit to three-to-four days later. Because I was feeling lackadaisical due to the cold, I didn’t shave my beard for several days, and then decided to go ahead and keep letting it grow now that winter is here. I still want to get my hair cut. So at least my appearance now synchs with my avatars/profile pics.

I did get the video from October 2 posted on the web. I still haven’t established an account for my stand-up comedy at Vimeo and posted the video there. I haven’t posted the transcript for that set on Funny or Die. Next steps in work flow is to edit the video from my October 5 set at Cafe Diem Comedy Night.

I haven’t update the appearances widget on this blog. I still haven’t figured out how to get RSS onto the sidebar. I’m not on Rooftop Comedy yet but I have gotten on Topshelfd. In fact, the latest video I posted in on their home page. I’m thinking about adding a “rules of comedy” page to this blog.

My sister liked the sound on that video, which was due to the fact that I recorded it at home because my efforts to record it at Super Friends Camp and Cafe Diem failed. Memo to self: get a Kodak Zi8 and a wireless lavalier mic.

Upcoming event is “That Ain’t Right” comedy night at the Fallout. I’ve got to rewrite the set, removing the Michael Moore jokes and adding four jokes I’ve written for www.DailyComedy.com. There’s a three week break before the next Cafe Diem Comedy Night because there are five Mondays in November. I want to burn a DVD of Jared Cullum’s last set at Cafe Diem so I can pass it on to him at Fallout. The first step is to get everything from the memory card offloaded to the hard drive.

WordPress now has a button above the “add new posts” page which allows you to get a shortened link. I still haven’t navigated around and explored all the features/tweaks involved in the site. At least it’s now showing up on the first page of Google searches.

I’ve been watching “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report“ on Hulu. HuffPo definitely skims the cream with their clips. Watching the whole show, there are moments when the shows slip into talk show blandness. Fortunately for them, the Silly Season runs pretty much 24/7/365 thanks to attention-junkies like Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston.

In this short guide we will create a new page that lists the feeds available on a WordPress blog. It

In this short guide we will create a new page that lists the feeds available on a WordPress blog. It’s a simple process and can be a handy overview of what data your site offers.

Step One: Creating a Feeds Template

We will need a template which dynamically outputs our feeds. The easiest way to do this to fit in with the theme you have installed is to make a copy of the page.php template and name it something like feeds.php

Next we will need to give the new template a label. Look for the following snippet of code or something similar at the top and change the label to “Feeds Page”. If you do not see it go ahead and add this.

/*
Template Name: Feeds Page
*/

Next we will want to remove the code from this template that generates the page. We will replace it with the code that displays links to the feeds. Remove everything from the start of the WordPress loop to the end:

From

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

to

<?php endwhile; endif; ?>>

including the edit_post_link function call.

Now we will want to add in some code to display the feeds. I’ve created some code to get us started which can be demoed on my personal blog’s feed page.

The code is

<h2>Global Feeds</h2>

<ul>
<li><a href="<?php bloginfo('rss2_url'); ?>" title="<?php _e('Latest Posts (RSS)'); ?>"><?php _e('<abbr title="Really Simple Syndication">RSS</abbr>'); ?></a></li>
<li><a href="<?php bloginfo('atom_url'); ?>" title="<?php _e('Latest Posts (Atom)'); ?>"><?php _e('Atom'); ?></a></li>
<li><a href="<?php bloginfo('comments_rss2_url'); ?>" title="<?php _e('Latest Comments (RSS)'); ?>"><?php _e('Comments <abbr title="Really Simple Syndication">RSS</abbr>'); ?></a></li>
</ul>

<h2>Feeds by Category</h2>

<ul>
<?php wp_list_categories('orderby=name&show_count=1&feed=RSS&title_li='); ?>
</ul>

The first few lines simply link to the standard feeds: a feed of the latest posts in RSS format, a feed of the posts in ATOM format and a feed of latest comments in RSS format.

The last few lines (wp_list_categories) output some links to the feeds of the categories you have been posting in. You can edit the above code to fit your needs. For example you can set show_count to 0 to remove the amount of posts after the RSS link, or change “RSS” to say “Feed” instead or you can remove the listing of category feeds all together.

The hard part is now over. We need to let WordPress know we want a specific page for this template. We do this by creating a new page and setting the page template to use our new feeds template.

Step Two: Creating a Page

Login to the admin control panel and navigate to “Pages” and “Add New”. Name the page “Feeds” or something similar. Leave the content blank and then look to the right for “Template” under the attributes box. Click the dropdown and select our new template.

Once you publish the page and click the view button a beautiful new feed template should be displayed.

Closing

That’s it! Enjoy! This method can be adapted for other dynamic pages you may want to create and is employed by things like a custom archives page or a new dynamic home page. Let me know if this tutorial was useful or if you are using it on your own blog!

<ul>
<?php
wp_list_categories('orderby=name&show_count=1&feed=RSS'); ?>W
</ul>

I’m quickly developing some sort of “love affair” with RSS feeds and here is why.

I’m quickly developing some sort of “love affair” with RSS feeds and here is why. There is just so many darn things you can use them for and there are a couple of tools out there that help me to accomplish three of my major goals: my education; sharing great content with other folks through social media outlets like Twitter and FaceBook; and they are now allowing me the capability to further promote our groups, our members, and their companies. Sweet!

My Education: Whenever I encounter a site or a blog that I find interesting, I’m always looking for the “RSS Icon” as shown above. Click on that and I am immediately taken to a screen that allows me to automatically load this feed to my Google Reader. If you don’t see the icon, look for something that says “Subscribe” or words to that effect. Failing that, you can still try to manually feed the URL to your reader and see if it can find the feed from that address. I’d guess that this last-ditch method will work better than 50% of the time. Now that the feed is in your reader, you can peruse articles at your leisure and read the ones you find to be of interest. There are probably well over 500 such articles that go to my reader each day, perhaps closer to 1,000, and it takes me maybe 1/2 hour per day to sift through those. I also use a tool called ReadTwit that takes the links from Tweets of those that I follow and converts and loads them into my reader. In other words, that obscure shortened URL actually converts to something you can read and understand.

Share Content With Followers: From my Google Reader, once I have selected an article to read, I can also choose to send that article out via Twitter or post it to FaceBook. There are other sites that you can share it to as well. If this article was generated by a Tweet, I will typically follow that back to the person who sent the link and then RT (retweet) their update. The only shortcoming with using the reader interface is that it needs to be a separate action for each site you wish to share to. No biggie.

Now, let’s say that I find a site that consistently puts out quality articles. A site that I trust implicitly to be both professional and interesting. Enter Twitterfeed. Twitterfeed allows me to take any RSS feed and set up a system whereby the app will automatically scan each feed on a set schedule to look for new content. When it finds said new content, a tweet is automatically generated along with a content header and a link to that article. It’s a win-win. I am credited with generating and sharing good content and the person who wrote the article is promoted at the same time and it generates hits to his or her site. You can also add standard prefix and suffix language to the tweet not to exceed 20 characters per each. Got to love that!

Promote NetWorks! Boise, Our Members, and Their Companies: I used to have Twitterfeed scan this blog for new articles however, a few months ago WordPress.com added a “publish to Twitter” option that sends the article out immediately. And, I’m an “immediate” kind of guy so I took this off that service. However, I did create a new Twitterfeed account for NetWorks! Boise and added it to that. Follow me as I try to make sense of all of this for both you and me (smile).

NetWorks! Boise is committed to showcasing our members and their companies via any legitimate avenue that we can either find or create. This site, as well as our individual group sites, are examples of this commitment. Social Media is another tool that we have used on a limited basis to accomplish this goal. The goal being … push member information out. So, here are the steps being taken:

I have created a new Twitter account, @NetWorks_Boise, for this purpose. At least for now, this account is pretty much going to be fully automated.

I have encouraged the members to provide me with links to their, and their company’s, blogs and have been loading those into the new Twitterfeed account along with the feed for this blog.

At the same time, I have been also loading these feeds into my existing Twitterfeed account and the reason for that is .. right now @NetWorks_Boise has about a grand total of 5 followers (smile). Once the follower count rises to a reasonable level, I will likely remove these feeds from my main Twitterfeed account.

Each of the feeds is prefaced with the member company name or member name and has a suffix reading “NetWorks Boise Mbr”. Remember, a 20 character limitation for both the prefix and the suffix. We promote both the member and the group.

Guess what? Our dedicated group pages also have those cute little RSS icons on them. And even in multiple places (smile). I am testing these out now for one group and using two of the separate feeds available: events and group activity. Actually, I learned this trick from Jamie Morgan who runs NetworkInCDA up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho who is also the individual who introduced me to the Ning platform that we are using. Thanks, Jamie! Follow her @jamiemorgancda. Very smart gal! The result of this will be that whenever new member activity is created on the site, a tweet goes out. Should a member post an event on the site, you guessed it, a tweet goes out.

I’m pretty pumped about all of this and can’t wait to monitor the results. I do know that our member blogs are already getting hits as a result of this and that’s the goal that we hoped to achieve.

Hey, it’s a Saturday! Don’t say I never gave you anything! (smile). Thanks for visiting!

Nou medecursisten,

Interview with the lone woman minister in Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa’s cabinet, until the Reddy brothers ousted her. I interview her for MiD DAY on Women’s Day, 2008

Being a lone woman in the cabinet, do you find any difficulties?

No. I have never faced any problems being the lone woman. I have been taking my independent decisions. I feel if there were many other women ministers things would have been easier. All women could together put forward the problems of women in the state, and our stand would have been stronger.

How did you enter politics?

I come from a RSS family. My brother was a full time RSS worker and I followed him. I was active in the RSS. In 2004 I became a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC). In 2007, I contested the assembly elections and won. I was inducted into the cabinet as a minister.

Tell us about your life before becoming a politician?

I was born into a farmer’s family in a village called Charvaka in Dakshin Kannada district. Our village had no basic facilities like road or electricity. Till 10th standard I studied in a school which had no teachers. I did my graduation at St Philomena’s, Puttur and MSW from Roshni Nilaya, Managlore. I then worked as a research assistant in Indian Institute of Social Services and as a counselor at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Do you suggest politics as a career for women?

Certainly. Most educated women shun away from politics. I call upon them not only to vote but to also participate actively in politics. They are well informed and take good decisions for the welfare of the state. The have to come forward to clean the system.

Politics is considered dirty. So you still recommend it?

Yes politics is dirty. There is a lot of leg pulling, jealously and enmity. That’s why I ask educated youngsters to join politics. Not only BJP, but let them join any party. Educated youngsters can cleanse the system.

Can women handle the pressures of being a politician?

I have not faced any problem. May be this is because I am single and hence had no other commitments. I could give my time totally to politics. But when women are married, they may face difficulties. As Indian women they have to take care of their families as well as concentrate on their career. Still, we have many successful married women politicians in India like Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dixit.

Why have you remained single?

RSS has a tradition where many do not get married and devote their time totally to service. I had grown up with the same mentality and decided not to get married. Initially there was opposition from my family and they wanted me to marry and settle down. But later they gave in.

Of late, Bangalore has come to be known as an unsafe city with attacks on women. Do you think the city is unsafe?

Bangalore is safe compared to many other cities in India. Incidents like eve-teasing have been happening in Bangalore before too. It is just that now they are being hyped. To stop such incidents the mentality of the people has to change. I have traveled alone in the city before entering politics, and I have never faced any problem. The onus is also on women too. They should not dress provocatively or behave invitingly. I don’t say that they should not wear jeans, but they should not be provocative.

Do you wear jeans?

I have worn it in my younger days. I used to wears jeans and tops. Now, I restrict myself to sarees and salwar kameez.

Unlike other woman politicians you have worn a fancy embroidered saree. Who selects your clothes?

(laughs) If I like any saree I buy it. After becoming a minister I haven’t been able to go shopping. My friends select my clothes and buy them for me. I used to wear fancy sarees earlier, by now I have to restrict myself. So now I prefer khadi silk.

What is your take on pub culture?

It is an individual’s choice. If a woman in matured, working and independent she can certainly go to a pub if she wishes. I am not for students going to the pub. Here it is not about culture, but responsibility. No parent would want his student child to miss classes and be in pubs.

Do you drink alcohol?

No. I don’t

There is a buzz that an astrologer had told Devegowda that the next Chief Minister would be a woman, so he put his daughter-in-law Anita Kumaraswamy in the bye-elections. Do you see yourself as the first woman Chief Minister of Karnataka?

(Smiles) No Comments. I pray that our leader Yeddyurappa only continues as the next chief minister for the next ten years. He is doing a very good job. I am still young in politics and have to learn a lot.

I’m the new happy owner of an iPhone. One of the first thing that I did was trying to find the right application to bring back all of the feeds that I carefully manage on my Google RSS reader. Because living in Brooklyn means sometime fairly long commutes, reading trade news and the bloggers that matter to me when traveling was critical.
And the app that I found works fairly well (seamlessly download all of the latest articles when I’m connected, that I can then “comfortably read” while commuting).

But the problem that I have is that a bunch of publishers (never bloggers I have to say, either by lack of tech knowledge or maybe because they’re just more open to the social web) think it is smart to parse their feeds and only include abstracts. Here are the usual reasons brought on and why it doesn’t make sense:

- “We need to have the user on our site, if not, people tend to not go anymore to our site…”
Who cares where the media is consumed? The key thing is make sure that you aggregate all of the analytics (and not only your site’s analytics). Most of the analytical packages now include that as a standard. And you might even learn interesting things about your audience (where is the media consumed, through what device or what platform etc.). In the end game, what matters is that the user is in contact with your brand, whether connected or disconnected.

- “We’re losing money since we can’t serve ads…”
While that was true for a long time, there’s more and more solutions coming down the road for publishers to monetize their RSS audience (see the good article from Dosh Dosh on that). And even if it’s not fully perfect, you can actually come up with new interesting packages for your advertisers that would, for example. include location-based services / promotions / coupons etc.

- “Our content is beautiful and should really be consumed on a full screen rather than a micro device…”
True again for a long time but the irruption of smart phones and e-readers is going to revolutionize that radically in terms of media consumption usage while potentially increase the rendering of your content (you might even stretch that argument to say that in some large e-readers that include color, the rendering will be ultimately better than through the current web experience).

There’s also a couple of downsides on the abstract method. The main one (realized from my own use) is that I tend to skip the feeds that are just a couple of lines long. It’s very very frustrating to start reading the abstract, get excited and then being unable to finish the article. Sure, I can always save it for later, but unless that 3 lines abstract was crazy interesting, I’ll never go back to it. So, first effect, I don’t use these feeds anymore (and therefore, I actually stop reading that specific publication, relying on the rest of the feeds to get me informed – good example at Silicon Alley Insider).

You have to follow your users instead of trying to shoehorn them into what you believe is good for you.
In the long run, I realized that with the help of an e-reader and/or a smartphone, I actually consume more media than before. It’s an exciting feeling to board on a plane with no internet connection (that’s getting rare though) and know that you’ll be able to catch up on all these great articles you’ve been saving for a moment like that, a moment when you’re not connected. And that’s also probably a moment where you, as a media company, want to be in the mind of the mind-free user, especially when that user is actually available to connect with your brand.

This is my first solo blog. I have written many blogs (4 to date) for SyncCreation. I have been aske

This is my first solo blog. I have written many blogs (4 to date) for SyncCreation. I have been asked why I post my blogs on the SyncCreation blog site and I will be asked why I have two places I post my blogs (SyncCreation and TheMrRogers). I also get asked often what I do as my profession.

Here are the answers:

Why I post on SyncCreation and my profession– I am fortunate enough to have a profession that is in alignment with who I am, my passion, and the difference I choose to make in the world. So what do I do? To be very general I am a coach and a business consultant.

I work for a company that owns and partners with companies. Currently there are 3 companies that the umbrella company is owners/partners in and I am the front line for all three.

ThirdPaycheck (http://www.thirdpaycheck.com/) – ThirdPaycheck is a business coaching firm that assists people in staring a side business (a micro business). I am a business consultant/coach that walks people through the steps it takes to start a business. Anyone who has motivation and passion can start a side business with support!

Manifest Management (http://manifestforsuccess.com/) – Manifest Management is a business development firm that works with companies that are established and that make anywhere from $100,000 to $45 million in revenue a year. I am Manifest Management’s Senior Business Analyst for their national clients. If you business owner, big or small, check out their free business analysis on their website.

SyncCreation (http://www.synccreation.com/) – SyncCreation, is a company that teaches how to manifest dreams into reality, affect the physical with your energy and clean out the blocks that stand between you and what you want. For them I am a mentor, consultant and community organizer.

Expect Business Solutions – This is an umbrella company that my 2 partners and I created over 3 years ago. EBS develops business tools that assist companies in connecting with their clients. EBS has also been the platform for my Life Coaching (Mentoring) as well as personalized Business Coaching that I have done over the years.

The above contains only the projects that I am involved in on a consistent basis. I often partner with companies for a time and I have been (currently am) the Chairmen of the Founders Board at the Great Life Foundation for 3 plus years.

That is what I do. A mouth full right? It might not seem relevant to answering the question “why post on SyncCreation” but it is. Each of the businesses I am involved with allows me to offer my support to the manifestation of someone’s vision. I believe that a business is the physical manifestation of a dream/vision.

Bottom line, I have made it my vision to Nurture Greatness in all of its many shapes and sizes. SyncCreation is the practice of Manifestation on a spiritual level to get Physical results. EBS, ThirdPaycheck and Manifest Management are the practice of using the physical to get results and physical results affect us spiritually.

I post my blogs on SyncCreation because SyncCreation is the platform in which I connect with the world spiritually. It has provided me the opportunity to meet some of the most brilliant revolutionaries of our time. I post on SyncCreation so that I might continue with their stand, in my life and to share with others, to constantly and consciously manifest visions into reality.

The second questions answer is short. Why do I also post on TheMrRogers blog? There are 2 reasons. First – because sometimes I will discuss topics that are not in alignment with SyncCreation’s stand. This will be rare but I am sure it will happen. Second – So that those who want can set up an RSS feed to my blogs.

I hoped I cleared up some of those questions about my profession and my blogs. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

There are so many great sources of info out there—I have my RSS feed pulled into my iGoogle page, and it’s great for procrastination.

It’s also pretty great for getting snippets of info. Here are just a few from today:

50 Social Media Tips for NPOs from Chad Norman’s ‘Webby Things’

Connection Cafe’s notes about non-traditional & year-end giving (including Oxfam’s campaign) this season

Current favorite food blogger David Leibovitz has something to say about local foods in France. No one said I was limited to just nonprofit interests!

I’ve got some other ‘learning locations’ linked over to the right. How about you? Where do you get your best ‘nonprofits on the web’ (or other!) info–blogs or otherwise?
