He said, ‘Do not trust foreigners but only those having the same blood as Khmers. If we let them be at that place, they might release confidential information about national security, as one Thai person did already. They are not 100% honest towards us.’

“Mr. Cheam Yeap continued to say that according to new Article 90 of the Constitution of Cambodia, the Royal Government can make a request to the National Assembly ["The National Assembly shall approve the national budget, State planning, loans, financial contracts, and the creation, modification and annulment of tax."]. Then the National Assembly will exercise its right to cancel any contract that can affect the national interest. The Thai spy can be considered as proof to cancel that contract. Another Sam Rainsy Party parliamentarian, Mr. Son Chhay, said that the opposition party had expressed concerns since the beginning about problems of national security. Now, it happened as the Sam Rainsy Party had been concerned. He said he will write a letter to the government, because it is related to national security.

“He said, ‘I also saw information about the arrest of the Thai spy. I think it is an opportunity to respond to the Ministry of Defense and the Council of Ministers which had claimed that there would be no problems, but the problem exists now, and I want to know what measures they take.’ He emphasized that he will write a letter this week to the government to request it to check the control over the CATS company.

It’s been four years since WATCHMEN came into my life in graphic form. Not long after, the film production was announced. I harbored the lowest expectations, primarily to protect myself from grave disappointment. The novel resounded quite heavily with me and just about every other comic geek. I’m not fanatic, but on some days, close.

Dave Gibbons’ Babylonian cityscape is pure alchemy, forging a palimpsest of our popular cultural memories. On pulp, I identified it as an unmistakable Frankenhattan, but on screen, the slick and atmospheric translated as San Francisco (at least, to me it did). Countless nights I have walked, driven, biked, commuted home on the rain-glossened asphalt or in the cool shroud of fog.

I flew back to SF for a social visit early spring. Atmospheric conditions prevailed opening night of WATCHMEN; the streetscape was wet, shiny, with the occasional bright punctuation of streetlight. I met up with D,  a fast friend, comic devotee, and co-conspiratorial perv. We share a great appreciation for tight black shiny things. We plain old get off on it. But never together. Oh no. Never.

After 20 Years, India to Import Rice

After 20 years, India to import rice:

India, a traditional rice exporter, will import the grain for the first time in 20 years to meet a projected shortfall of the crop hit by drought and floods, government said yesterday.

The government estimates that there would be a shortfall of over 15 million tonnes in the 2009-10 Kharif (summer) season due to drought and floods in several states.

Thailand’s Foreign Trade department announced that the world’s biggest rice exporter is expected to release part of its huge stock of almost six million tonnes of rice stockpile to India, besides eight other countries, through g-to-g sales programmes.

The demand-supply gap for natural rubber in the country is set widen as production is expected to fall and demand set to rise above earlier stimates.

Rubber production for April-October period was 9.4 per cent lower at 4,35,125 tonnes against 4,80,230 tonnes last year.

Consumption grewn three per cent to 5,36,100 tonnes (5,20,375 tonnes).

The production-consumption mismatch resulted in a sharp rise in imports and a corresponding fall in exports.

Imports increased 133 per cent to 1,26,472 tonnes (54,283 tonnes), while exports plunged 92 per cent to 3,859 tonnes (34,000 tonnes), sources in the Rubber Board said.

The Rubber Board has scaled down the production target for the current fiscal by 2.8 per cent to 8.40 lakh tonnes from the earlier estimates of 8.67 lakh tonnes announced in April.

The forward estimates of production has moved up 6.8 per cent to 9.31 lakh tonnes from the earlier estimate of 8.81 lakh tonnes.

My sexuality deepened in young adulthood along with my cinematic coming-of-age. I took a lover (J) who, at first, was a colleague. He was a stage director, playwright, and screenwriter, with particular interest in multi-disciplinary collaboration. I was an architecture student with experience in photography, composition, and story boarding. I had been chosen by a close friend, film director (B), as cinematographer/storyboardist, location scout, and set designer.

J and I fell in love over a series of long distance letters we’d exchanged as we prepared for the summer film production. During the preceding spring, my post was graced by countless developments of the script, biographies of our characters, maps, ephemera, music collections, love letters, and, once, a flattened box of matches meant to evoke the final scene’s pyre.  I reciprocated with sketches, projective imagery, photographs, music, fabrics, geological artifacts, scents. It was a forest fire of desire wrapped around a creative endeavor.

The film was supported by a local grant and was about a schizophrenic photolab technician who held romantic obsession identifying as a vampire in the throes of seducing his photographer-client.

During the exhaustive dead-of-night production weeks, J also had responsibilities of an indie movie house manager. As unglamorous as it was, it paid for film school tuition and rent. Moreover, it afforded J’s network the lagniappe of the movie house.

The theater was a Deco structure and had been spare-no-cost meticulously restored, including light fixture re-gilding and  mohair mahogany seating.

One late late June night, I arrived at the theater for the first of our summer ritual. J would set up the current celluloid for a private screening. The first was ZENTROPA (EUROPA). I was lulled to sleep quickly because of the intensive, hot filming earlier that day, a cold refreshing shower, and the clack clack clack, flicker flicker flicker of the highly stylized European black and white film. J typically had at least an hour’s worth of work and he enjoyed our sharp banter of criticism the following day. In retrospect, he was quite methodically turning me in that darkness.

On this night, I struggled to keep awake in order to experience the photography of this film. It was sexy, slick, black, iconographic…no grey tones to speak of.

I was roused by J’s hand on the back of my neck, thumb on my jaw, mouth on my mouth, his other hand under my lower back, pulling down my sporty boi panties. I resisted awakening, preferring to remain in my somnambulant haze, and reciprocated with deepening kisses. The film sound had been quieted and, in this heightened stimulus, the imagery of the film pulsed with J’s advances. My hands tightened on the mahogany armrests, my hips lifted easily in his hands, feet on backs of chairs. Somehow, he always appeared quietly; sometimes, I anticipated him in light sleep.

The collapse of the image on the screen with the inebriation of sex and passion of new lovers consummated my future with cinema. Inextricable, my desire for celluloid can never be separated from my never-sated appetite for complete and total sexual adventure. This was the nascence of my film fetish.

And now, before every film commencement, as I wait for the ritual of velvet curtains to draw closed then open, I enjoy silent reflection…and complete arousal.
