It’s the time of year when the season’s most successful teams and drivers are making roo

It’s the time of year when the season’s most successful teams and drivers are making room in the trophy cabinet – and some of 2009’s more significant silverware was handed over on Friday evening.

Jenson Button, Formula One World Champion, and Andy Soucek, the first Formula Two champion for 25 years, collected their trophies at the FIA Gala held in Monaco.

Joining them were Ross Brawn, collecting the F1 constructors’ trophy on behalf of his Northamptonshire-based team, which goes down in history as the first to claim the title in its debut season.

Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barichello were on hand to pick up the awards for second- and third-placed drivers. Vettel, aged 22, became the youngest drivers’ championship runner-up in Formula One history.

Rubens Barrichello, 37, achieved his fourth top-three championship finish and maintained his position as the most experienced driver in F1 history, having competed in 288 races so far and being due to line up on the 2010 grid with Williams.

Button said of his award: “I am honoured to be here in Monaco this evening to collect the Drivers’ Championship trophy and to see my name engraved alongside the famous racing legends of the past.

“Motor racing has been a part of my life since my father bought my first go-kart at the age of eight and to have achieved my dream of becoming World Champion makes me incredibly proud.

“This has been a fantastic year for myself and Brawn GP. Just 23 days before the start of the season, we didn’t even know if we would be at the first race and now I am the World Champion with the team winning the Constructors’ Championship. Everyone at the team deserves our success so much.”

He thanked the Brawn GP and Mercedez-Benz High Performance Engines squads for giving him the tools to do the job, saying he was impressed by their hard work and commitment: “It has truly been a fantastic year and I am very proud of the success that we achieved together.”

Ross Brawn added: “This has been an incredible year for Brawn GP. To live the trauma of the winter months and make it to the grid for the first race and then to achieve eight Grand Prix victories and the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships in our first year was inconceivable before the season started.

“On behalf of the team, it is a great honour to receive the Constructors’ Championship trophy this evening and I look forward to taking the trophy back to Brackley to share with our team.

“I would like to thank Jenson and Rubens for the spirit in which they fought for the Drivers’ Championship this year, all of our staff at the factory in Brackley for their hard work and dedication, and Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart and Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth for the support that they have given us since the start of the year and the superb engine that they provided.

“Our team has now formed a partnership with Mercedes-Benz for the future through the investment in the team by Daimler AG and Aabar. Our new position as the Mercedes works team will revive the brand’s iconic Silver Arrows heritage and we are all looking forward to representing Mercedes-Benz at the pinnacle of global motorsport and the challenge of defending our title next season.”

Soucek picked up his Formula Two trophy after an impressive seven wins and 11 podiums from 16 races – and said his only ambition was now to make the transition to Formula One.

He said: “I am incredibly proud of my success in Formula Two. It was the best season of my life, and I have enjoyed every moment. More than anything else, Formula Two has opened doors in Formula One for me, which is a dream for any driver.

“I was expecting to be right on the top before the season started, but I didn’t expect to win by such a margin. Every race was a different challenge and every single win was special: my first in Brno was incredible, and then Imola and Barcelona, where I won the last two races in front of all my friends, family and sponsors – that was the perfect end to my championship.

“This has been an amazing year for me in terms of motorsport, and my only aim now is to be in Formula One next year.”

Other awards presented on the night included those for best promoter and best race broadcaster. The former went to Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for its debut event and was collected by His Excellency Abdulla Khouri, Board Member of the Yas Marina Circuit.

Formula One Management was handed the Television Trophy for what was described as “outstanding coverage of the event” with the award presented to FOM TV Director Dean Locke.

As global leaders meet in Copenhagen to address the issue of climate change, the question of “green” racing arises yet again.

Let’s state, just for the record, that we love the environment as much as we love children and puppies and candy. We wish to do no harm. We recycle (legally mandated in San Francisco), take public transit (sometimes…), and ride bicycles. That said, when we go racing, we have no interest in being environmentally friendly and more or less prefer just the opposite.

There are various ways to define green racing: some of it involves using alternative fuels, others try to improve engine efficiency, reduce emissions, or recapture lost energy (the principal behind KERS). We have seen teams running biodiesels in the ALMS (see Drayson Racing photo, above), ethanol in the Indycar Series, and a winning turbo diesel at Le Mans. F1 teams have harnessed the power of energy lost under braking and use it for additional power via KERS. The impact of KERS could be seen easily in Brazil as employed by Lewis Hamilton, using boost to take a podium spot away from Rubens Barrichello.

We also acknowledge, as we must, that trends in motorsports tend to follow those of the automotive business. Carmakers are under pressure to design more environmentally friendly vehicles, whether they are are hybrids or other less-polluting internal combustion engines. If the big manufacturers are going green, we expect some degree of that in racing, as manufacturers look for a tie-in between racing and their product in the showrooms and forecourts.

Still, we think it a bit ridiculous to suggest, as Bradley Lord did in this week’s Autosport (discussing an FIA study), that racing should be measured in some way by the amount of energy consumed by a car. This is where we draw the line. We do not go racing in order to measure energy efficiency, or to pat ourselves on the back about using “clean” fuels when we go around a track for two hours just for the sake of entertainment. We do not go racing in order to satisfy our political needs or any sense of guilt we may have about burning the charcoal barbecue grill last night.

No, we go racing to see the loudest, fastest, most outrageous vehicles that men and women can drive. We like the smell of burning fossil fuels and the sound of an internal combustion engine. The sound of an Audi R10 TDI coming down the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, eerily silent except for the hum of the tires, gave us the creeps. When technology exists that can deafen us, awe us, inspire us, and thrill us–and not destroy the earth–we’re all for it. Until then, leave your politics at the front gate.

We love the earth and we love racing. Enjoying both does not have to occur at the same time.

Formula 1 governing body the FIA has released the entry list ahead of the 2010 World Championship. T

Formula 1 governing body the FIA has released the entry list ahead of the 2010 World Championship. The field will be the largest of recent years although a number of amendments are still likely to be made, with the addition of the Sauber team being the most likely modification.

With four new teams and the absence of Toyota, the cast of 2010 is already looking somewhat different to that of this season. McLaren retains the No.1 car, courtesy of Champion Jenson Button’s arrival, meaning 2008 victor Lewis Hamilton will race under No.2.

The Mercedes Grand Prix (formerly Brawn) team will take its desired name in the New Year, with Force India’s strong 2009 season leaving them seventh name on the list. Having taken the place of BMW, Lotus has the lowest numbered cars of the new entrants, with the Sauber team still hoping to be included within the array.

At Campos, debutant Bruno Senna has been handed the higher number of car and, as predicted, the Manor team will be competing under Virgin Racing branding.

As usual – in following tradition – there is no car 13, thus meaning Force India is the first team to see its primary driver carry an even number. Once again, the first car of each team will be identified with a luminous red t-bar on the roll hoop, with the second being yellow.

The 2010 FIA Formula 1 World Championship entry list is as follows:

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
1. Jenson Button
2. Lewis Hamilton

Brawn GP Formula One Team*
3. Nico Rosberg

Eu me machuquei nesse ano.

(risos)

It seems there are some news stories flying around the Formula One paddock that may or may not be tr

It seems there are some news stories flying around the Formula One paddock that may or may not be true. One thing that we do know at this point is that Kimi Raikkonen has decided to take a sabbatical from F1 for 2010 and go to the WRC. His decision is based on the fact that he was pushed out by Ferrari, was too expensive for every other team and couldn’t come to contract terms with McLaren before Jenson arrived on the scene. He has stated that he could return in 2011, but only if he is driving for a team that has a shot at winning a title. This logic also runs through his WRC hopes and he, I assume anyway, will sign with Citroen if he wants the best car. I am on the fence about him going. I was never a true fan of his, but he did bring a really mellow, laid-back, Finnish attitude to the pits that was really refreshing… plus, he could wear a hat like no other. His Kimi-cap fashion was something to see in every press conference. As far as rumor is concerned, there is some speculation going around that Michael Schumacher will actually return for the 2010 season. But the shocker is that it won’t be in a red car with a prancing horse at the front. If he does come back though, he could be pared with Ross Brawn again at Mercedes (formerly Brawn). Eddie Jordan, the outspoken former team owner and BBC pundit, has made it known that he believes Schumi will be back on the grid, but that it will be in a Silver Arrows with Mercedes Grand Prix. Personally, I would hate to see this happen, but it isn’t like Michael can drive for the prancing horse because both seats are filled. If Luca di Montezemolo had his way and gotten the third car he wanted, this would not be an issue, but because that won’t be an option, Schumacher to Mercedes looks like a possibility that cannot be denied. Also, it has come about that, although Schumi renewed his contract with Ferrari, it has nothing to do with the F1 team anymore and is solely focused on the road car division. This leaves his racing wide open and he could be the person to fill one of the two seats that is now open at Mercedes GP because of the departures of both Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello. Do I think Schumi will do it? I think he will certainly give it a shot, I mean, he desperately wanted to come back this year and was unable, but his neck injury meant that he had to return to the sidelines. But that will be healed soon, so he will probably give it a good run. Now, do I want Schumi to return in anything that isn’t red and comes from Maranello? Of course not. But that’s the way things work these days. The coming weeks will really tell the whole story, but it is an interesting development and could be one of the biggest stories of the off season if it comes to fruition. Just imagine what Schumacher and Brawn can do with a car that came away with both the driver’s and constructor’s championships last year. It could be a hell of a season if that’s the case. Stay tuned.

Team GB

Despite Mercedes buying out Brawn GP to create Mercedes GP, and despite Mercedes’ promise to shareholders and fans alike that it would be back to back championships, the interweb has been abuzz with numerous rumours that the 2009 drivers champ, Jenson Button, was ditching his championship team and heading to (less?) greener pastures. Those wild rumours have been put to rest as McLaren and Button have announced their partnership for the 2010 season. This begs all sorts of unresolved questions. First off… Astonishing, no? What does all of this mean for Lewis Hamilton… is there another driver controversy brewing in the British Midlands… didnt McLaren learn from the Alonso-Hamilton misfire that two drivers of equal talent cant possibly co-exist at the same stall? Just thinking about it makes me wish Australia was just around the corner.

So lets, think about this for a moment… who is driving for Mercedes now?? Barrichello was the first to bolt and now Button has left the BAR replacement. So without any true championship caliber drivers, how exactly does the German stall plan to deliver on their lofty promise of a repeat championship. Why by installing two German drivers of course. Both Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg are tipped to be the 1-2 drives for next year’s squad, though nothing is 100% squared away just yet. There is still a lonely Finn out there who might be the right man for the job, should he decide he can afford a pay cut from 20 million pounds to 6 million pounds for the season.

The Sweet Nectar of Victory

However, considering the financial sticking point and Kimi’s notorious stubbornness, the Button move will likely push the once highly sought after Kimi Raikkonen into no-mans land. Its been a “hard” road for the Finn who could never quite get it done with McLaren, then won a driver’s title with Ferrari, got bumped from Ferrari in favour of driving enemy no 1, Fernando Alonso, returned to McLaren, only to be bumped by driving enemy no 2… Jenson Button?? Based on the personnel changes in F1 thus far it seems more and more certain that the 2010 season will find Kimi without a drive for the first time, in a very long time. Oh well Kimi, I hear Le Mans is… wait… its too funny to even consider. I doubt you will be able to make anywhere close to 6 mill on the 24 hour circuit, let alone the rally series you are considering. So Kimi… see you in 2011. I hear that Red Bull might have a spot open.

Lots of big news in the world of Formula One today. It has been announced the Jenson Button has sign

Lots of big news in the world of Formula One today. It has been announced the Jenson Button has signed with McLaren and will be paired up alongside Lewis Hamilton. He has said that it wasn’t about the money and that he is just out to continue moving forward with his career. However, everyone knows that Brawn did not want to pay him as much as he was asking and that McLaren was willing to pay more. Besides the pay increase, he now has a chance to be teamed with another Brit on a British team and he says that was a big reason to make the switch as well. As motivation, there is nothing better than driving for your country, and with McLaren, both Button and Hamilton will be flying the Union Jack, but I still don’t see any way this will work out in the long. This does mean that McLaren will retain the number 1 on the front of the car, and it is also the first time in F1 history that a team has the services of two drivers who were World Champions back to back. There is some speculation that Button had been forced out of Brawn by new owner Mercedes, but it remains to be seen whether that is the case or not. Ross Brawn and Nick Fry have expressed their disappointment at having Jenson leave the team and now have to go with a clean slate of drivers as Rubens Barrichello signed with Williams right after the season ended. The seats at Brawn will be highly coveted though, and the team should have the pace to stay with the front runners, if not be the front runners come the start of the season. More will be revealed as winter testing finally shows up and the true pace of the new cars can really be judged.

The news also means that Kimi Raikkonen is looking for a new place to drive. It has come out as rumor that he has three possibilities. Either he sits out the season, signs with the former Brawn team at reduced income or goes to the WRC with Citroen. There are rumors flying all over the paddock, from people close to him, that he will be in the WRC and contest Le Mans, while others are saying that he will try and shore up a deal with Mercedes F1 so that he can continue racing. Personally, I think Kimi is going to leave F1 behind this season and concentrate on his WRC training. He could possibly make a return in 2011 if all goes well, but his attention is not on F1 right now.

Veja a lista completa:

Williams F1 new boy Rubens Barrichello out to extend his record at Granja Viana 500 – although

Williams F1 new boy Rubens Barrichello out to extend his record at Granja Viana 500 – although Felipe Massa and Lucas di Grassi promise to provide strong opposition in the Brazilian endurance kart race.

Reigning Granja Viana 500 mile champion Rubens Barrichello has announced that will once again line-up along with his long time pals Tony Kanaan, Felipe Giaffone and Renato Russo in this year’s endurance race.

The main Brazilian kart event will he held at Kartodromo Granja Viana near Sao Paulo on December 4 and 5.

Barrichello and Kanaan have won eight out the twelve editions so far. The first free practice has been scheduled for next Monday, when drivers and teams will get to grips with the 1.1 kilometre circuit.

Barrichello will be also behind the wheel of a second kart, but the names of his team-mates are still to be announced.

“Granja Viana is a big fun event, but also a competition and we have to make sure we have the right drivers in both karts,” Barrichello explained.

“With the new rules, a driver should be replaced every time he pits, so it will be very important to have a very fine-tuned team.”

The main opposition to Barrichello and Kanaan’s plans to extend their domination should come from the squad led by Ferrari F1 star, Felipe Massa. Lucas di Grassi and Stock Car local ace Popó Bueno are already confirmed in that team with two other drivers to be named shortly. Massa won the first edition of the Granja Viana 500 in 1997 and got his second title in 2002 when he competed with Barrichello and Kanaan.
