Billy Leonard, consigliere di Coleraine, è stato eletto come rappresentante del Sinn Fein all’Assembly, per la circoscrizione di East Derry

Billy Leonard, ex orangista, ex riservista del Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) e ex membro del SDLP, è stato scelto come successore di Francie Brolly.
Il neo parlamentare ha ringraziato Brolly per l’onore concessogli, soprattutto nel poter rappresentare ‘la gente di East Derry’, una delle aree maggiormente depresse dell’isola per la quale si intende lavorare duramente nell’intento di assicurargli maggiore equità.
‘E’ la testimonianza della crescita del Sinn Fein in questa circoscrizione se siamo in grado di tenere questa convention stasera e vorrei ringraziare  tutti i membri del partito che sono arrivati ed hanno contribuito ad essa in tal modo cameratesco”, ha concluso Leonard.

Ex RUC man becomes Sinn Fein MLA (BBC News Northern Ireland)
Coleraine councillor Billy Leonard has been selected by Sinn Fein colleagues to become an assembly member in East Londonderry.
He is succeeding the party’s Francie Brolly who is to retire.
Mr Leonard is a former Orangeman, RUC reservist and member of the SDLP.
Following his selection he said it was an honour to be chosen to replace Mr Brolly “and to represent the people of East Derry”.
“It is testament to the growth of Sinn Fein in this constituency that we are able to hold this convention tonight and I would thank all the party members who came along and contributed to this convention in such a comradely fashion.
“The north west region is one of the most deprived areas on this island and it is important that we have strong leadership to ensure East Derry is given its fair share,” he said.

Lørdag den 14. november 2009 blev SL-kurset på modul 4 startet endeligt op. Med oplæg og  hands-on workshop, blev de studerende introduceret og oprettet i Second Life. Der blev givet små hints og instrukser til, hvordan de første små barrierer overvindes og jeg fornemmede, at de studerende tog godt imod de nye udfordringer på trods af et langt og hård seminar på RUC. Den første del med oplæg var obligatorisk, men den efterfølgende workshop fra frivillig. Det var glædeligt at se, at der var mange deltager på den frivillige del af seancen.

Mariis (Marianne Riis) startede op med et glimrende oplæg omkring Second Life og de mange muligheder den virtuelle verden tilbyder undervisere. Mariis  tog udgangspunkt i sit Ph.d.-projekt der netop handler om Dialogisk Didaktisk Design i SL og knyttede i sit oplæg bl.a. an til Kolbs læringscirkel og hendes egne modeller, der bl.a. omhandlede PBBL (Problem Based Blended Learning). I sit oplæg gjorde Mariis opmærksom på, at den virtuelle verden favner bredt. Gennem remediering kan man skabe læringsrum inden for et bredt fagligt spektrum lige fra fx sport, kunst, musik til naturvidenskab, sprogundervisning og samfundsfag.  Mariis viste i sit slideshow eksempler på steder, hvor  Second Life netop bliver brugt som undervisningsrum.

Efter Mariis’ oplæg fik jeg lov til at introducere Mew og mine fascinationsområder i SL.
Jeg skulle jo forsøge ikke fra starten at ødelægge de studerendes muligheder for selv at  finde svar og få  A-HA-oplevelser, og forsøgte derfor at rejse spørgsmål og forundring omkring de fire hovedpunkter, jeg synes er spændende.

Det første at de punkter jeg synes er interessant ved Second Life er muligheden for at  ophæve tid og sted. I Second Life bevæger man sig rundt gennem en teleporteringsfunktion. Man teleporterer mellem SLUrl-adresser og fra at teleporteringen er aktiveret går der kun sekunder før man ankommer på destinationsstedet.  Man kan med andre ord bevæge sig  ubesværet og hurtig fra et punkt til et andet i hele Second Life.
Der, hvor det bliver interessant når man så skal undervises. Mange undervisere har deres egen ø og læringsrum i SL. Her underviser de deres studerende, holder oplæg og designer læringskontekster. Det er i Second Life muligt at transportere sig mellem disse destinationer på sekunder. Jeg kan med andre ord modtage undervisning fra mennesker i hele verden uden at flytte mig IRL (in real life). På et par sekunder kan jeg rejse fra en undervisningsaktivitet med en underviser fra Portugal, til et nyt ”undervisningslokale” med en underviser fra Rusland på samme aften. Hvis dette skulle være foregået IRL havde det tage mange timer, måske endda dage. På samme måde er det jo også muligt, at samle undervisere fra hele verden til et sted, hvilket igen åbner op for enorme vidensresurser.

Det næste punkt jeg præsenterede var SLs muligheder for at læring kan forgå via mange kanaler (auditivt, skriftligt, visuelt ).

Et eksempel herpå er at forelæsninger kan foregå ved, at oplægsholderen (helt traditionelt) taler via voIP. Samtidig sidder deltagerne og lytter. Ud over at lytte har alle (inkl. underviseren) mulighed for at tekstchatte ud i det offentlige forum, hvor alle kan læse det, eller til en anden avatar via IM, hvor kun inviterede kan læse det.

Det bliver hermed muligt at ”tale sammen ” under forelæsningen, diskutere indholdet stille spørgsmål osv.

Samtidig kan kommunikationen suppleres med video, slideshows, audioklip, 3D-objekter mm.

Det er en helt utrolig oplevelse, at være til sådanne forelæsninger og jeg glæder mig til også at opleve underviserrollen.

Det tredje punkt er tilstedeværelsen. I SL er man til stede via sin avatar. Dette giver en helt unik og interaktiv oplevelse af indholdet og undervisningen, fordi man selv bliver en del af læringskonteksten. Et eksempel kunne være at undervisningen var designet ud fra, at avataren skal interagere med objekter eller bygge 3D-figurer. I sådanne tilfælde er den lærende nødt til at involvere sig ”fysisk” i undervisningen og kan ikke bare tage imod.

Et andet eksempel på tilstedeværelsen i Second Life kan være hele opbygningen af identitet omkring sin avatar. Avataren, der kan beskrives som en forlængelse af brugeren (Jones, 2006), er med til at skabe rammerne omkring andres opfattelse af brugeren og også brugerens egen opfattelse af sig selv (Turkle, 1995). Dette kan have både positive og negative konsekvenser for samarbejde, læring og selvopfattelsen i Second Life.

Det sidste punkt var den frihed Second Life tilbyder i forhold til skabelsen af virtuelle rum. Disse rum tilbyder nærmest uendelige muligheder for, at en underviser kan designe et læringsrum efter de specifikke behov de studerende har.
Det er kun fantasien der sætter grænser.

Jeg har aldrig været pinlig over at jeg ser programmet, men nu kan man med ekstra god grund sige at man ser DUM – to studerende fra RUC har netop skrevet speciale om hvorfor serien er så populær. Membri della delegazione Republican Network for Unity Ard Comhairle, sono stati bloccati e intimiditi da agenti della PSNI al loro arrivo al Belfast International Airport. Arrestato Tony Catney

Una squadra di 20 agenti sia in divisa che in borghese, hanno bloccato la delegazione del Republican Network for Unity Ard Comhairle, al suo arrivo al Belfast International Airport al rientro da una serie di meeting a Glasgow.
Un membro dell’Ard Comhairle di Derry è stato interrogato da un agente del PSNI, il quale con tono minaccioso gli ha rimarcato di conoscere bene la sua famiglia fornendo dettagli e anche i nomi dei figli. Proseguendo nell’Interrogatorio gli è stato chiesto se consocesse la gente con cui stava viaggiando e sul Republican Network for Unity in generale. Alla fine il membro dell’Ard Comhairle Tony Catney è stato arrestato.
Mentre un altro membre della delegazione si era rivolto a Catney in gaelico chiedendo spiegazioni su quanto fosse successo, la squadra di agenti che li circondava si è lasciata andare a derisioni ed a commenti idioti riferiti alla lingua gaelica.
Tony Catney è stato ammanettato e scortato apertamente attravervo il terminal principale dell’aeroporto da quattro ufficiali in diviso e due in borghese.
Il Republican Network for Unity ha specificato che questo è solo l’ultimo episodo intimidatorio al quale sono sottoposti i suoi sostenitori, bersagliati da minacce, perquisizioni ed incursioni nelle proprie abitazioni.
L’organizzazione afferma che continuerà a sostenere la propria politica contraria al Good Friday Agreement (Accordo del Venerdì Santo) e chiede l’immediata scarcerazione di Tony Catney.

Ard Comhairle Members Detained, Harassed And One Arrested At Airport (Republican Network for Unity)
Statement from Danny Mc Brearty, National Chairperson, Republican Network for Unity; “Earlier today a Republican Network for Unity Ard Comhairle delegation, returning from a series of meetings in Glasgow, was detained at Belfast International Airport arrivals by a group of approximately twenty (20) uniformed and plain clothed RUC/PSNI members. As one an Ard Comhairle member from Derry was being questioned, the plain clothed RUC/PSNI man menacingly told him that he was well aware of the make up of the individual’s family and of the details and names of his children. The same plain clothed RUC/PSNI man then inquired if he had any information on those he was travelling with and/or of the RNU in general. Ard Comhairle member Tony (T.C.) Catney was then arrested. As another member of the RNU delegation tried speaking with T.C. in Gaeilge about what was happening, the group of RUC/PSNI surrounding them began laughing and making idiotic noises concerning the Irish language. Openly handcuffed T.C. was lead through the main Airport terminal by four uniformed armed and two plain clothes RUC/PSNI men. This arrest is but the latest in a catalogue of measures directed in recent months against the supporters and membership of the Republican Network for Unity. This has ranged from being the targets of continual stop and searches, raids upon our members and supporters homes, through press briefings which have been aimed at smearing individuals, T.C. being one of them. The Republican Network for Unity resolves to continue to articulate and maintain resolute principled republican political opposition against the charade which is known as the ‘Good Friday Agreement’. The Republican Network for Unity calls for the immediate release of Tony Catney.” Statement ends.

Såeh… MundJam IV løb af stablen i går. I ved det sikkert godt, men lad mig lige kort skitsere hvad det handler om: Open-mike i tre timer i RUCs øvelokale, hvor man kan stille sig op og lave alt fra stand-up, synge, fortælle anekdoter, eller bare lave et eller andet mund-sjov. RUCs nyhedsbrev, der internt oversætter alle indsendte nyheder til engelsk, fik sloganet “Kom og vær sjov med munden” til at lyde decideret mere naughty end det burde, hvilket vi fik meget sjov ud af. (Lyder “Come and have fun with your mouth” ikke som en billig pornoproduktion fra 70′erne?)

Det var det bedste set-up, vi havde haft nogensinde. Vi slukkede det matte, grimme lys i øvelokalet, satte spotlights op over scenen, to gulvlamper på hver sin side af publikum – og så var der ellers dømt intimstemning!

Det var bare synd, der ikke var nogen, der nød det.

BorgTu og jeg havde ellers været meget dygtige, synes vi selv, og rent faktisk forberedt noget sammenhængende at sige (en gammel stand-up udfordring, der lige skulle have sine foreløbigt sidste smæk i aftes). I modsætning til andre Mund-Jam’s, hvor jeg kun havde halvvejs planlagt noget at sige og bøvede mig igennem resten, havde jeg denne gang et helt ‘mini-show’ planlagt, fra ende til anden, med set-ups, punchlines og alt hvad den kan trække. BorgTu og jeg havde endda været i ’skrivelejr’ og prøvet jokes af på hinanden, så det var finpudset, det her!

Jeg synes jo selv, det er hylemorsomt, det jeg har lavet. Så når jeg endelig står deroppe og kun får sporadiske grin, så får man en lidt synkende fornemmelse om, at det her måske alligevel ikke er noget, man er så god til som man troede. Så går BorgTu på. Jeg syntes selv, hans show var morsomt da vi gik det igennem sammen, men han får samme reaktion. Måske har jeg bare fuldstændig mistet min sans for humor?

Så går en professionel stand-up’er på scenen. Han siger, han har noget nyt materiale, han gerne vil afprøve på os – som er sjovt. Når han så får samme reaktion som BorgTu og jeg, så tænker han selvfølgelig: “Fuck det. Time to bring the A game.” Og så hiver han jokes frem, som han har brugt på betalte jobs og fået stor reaktion på. Igen, publikum er nærmest tavse.

Dér gik det op for os, at det nok ikke var vores shows, den var gal med. Folk syntes simpelthen bare, at de på en eller anden måde skyldte TMD at dukke op; ikke fordi de gad, men fordi de var blevet inviteret.

Men bevares. Ud over det store slag på selvtilliden, så var det en ekstremt hyggelig aften, med billig øl, intim atmosfære, og mellem indslagene på scenen var der masser af grin og spas!

Jeg er fristet til at kalde det typisk dansk engagementsniveau, på linie med at sidde og råbe af sit fjernsyn når der er fodboldkamp — vi vil gerne se på og have hvad vi selv tror er en veludviklet mening om tingene, men når vi rent faktisk får chancen for selv at gøre noget, så har vi det bedre i vores trygge stol. Case in point: de eneste, der rent faktisk stillede sig op på scenen og sagde noget, havde forberedt noget hjemmefra. En enkelt stillede sig op spontant fordi hun åbenbart var blevet fuld nok til at tro, at hun var morsom (det var hun ikke), og Prince Søren (of Persia) har aldrig haft brug for et manuskript – han er naturligt sjov. Resten sad på deres flade og grinte høfligt og sporadisk.

Men fuck it. Måske er det lidt held i uheld at Donut havde Malk De Koijn-billetter til samme aften, så han ikke kunne komme og filme processen. Og selv om det ikke fik den store reaktion, så er jeg personligt stolt af at have svinet Sidney Lee-fans, Anni Fønsby, De Unge Mødre og RUC’ere fra København i samme show på under ti minutter.

També la ciutat de Banyoles en si te grans atractius. Com ara el seu casc antic medieval, amb els seus museus, com ara el Darder d’història natural amb les seves andròmines del segle XIX, tan curioses. O l’arqueològic, un senyor museu, amb la mandíbula, reconeguda a nivell mundial, i les troballes neolítiques pel parc de la Draga. És un goig passejar per Banyoles. Seure a la plaça major, porxada, veure el romànic del monestir de Sant Esteve, impresionant, o la Pia Almoina medieval, gòtica, les cases i els carrers, tan pintorescos, i les esglèsies, la muralla, la llotja, els canals… tant i tant a visitar a Banyoles. Però avui us volem donar un nou motiu per pujar amb la família fins Banyoles. La fira, magnífica, de Sant Martirià, que te lloc a mitjans de novembre. Una típica fira de les comarques de Girona. Molt de bestiar, bestiar de tota mena. Des de petites gallines fins a bous, sense oblidar el ruc català, ànima de la festa. I una altra fira multisectorial. D’aquelles que entusiasmen els més petits de la casa, que giren i giren, roden de parada en parada fins aconseguir un bon plec de prospectes, ben inútils tots ells. A més, fira gastròmica, mostra d’art, concursos variats, animació… en fi, tot el que una fira de tan d’abast comarcal demana. Mireu-vos la programació i aneu fins Banyoles. Són 130 kms. Tots d’autopista. Fins Girona i, després, autovia. Podeu passar-hi el cap de setmana. Us recomanem el decadent hotel Mirallac, enfront mateix de l’estany. Us sentireu transportats. O el ultramodern i fantàstic hotelet de Ca l’Arpa. Un allotjament amb encant al mig de Banyoles. Sopars de somni al seu restaurant, el Rebost d’en Pere. Si us agrada el turisme rural, i sou prou colla, podeu anar al mas Carboner. Els restaurants dels hotels que hem anomenat són fora sèrie. Però si voleu un altre lloc molt recomanable per menjar, producte fresc, de mercat i de temporada, mireu La Cisterna, al carrer dels Païssos Catalans, 36. Tel:972581356. En tots els llocs, per fires, millor reserveu.

Los mayores calmamos el estrés contemplando el agua quieta, como un espejo, que refleja las montañas del Pirineo lejano, las nubes y los árboles, con un vestido diferente según la estación. También la ciudad de Banyoles en sí tiene grandes atractivos. Como su casco antiguo medieval, con sus museos, como el Darder de historia natural y sus trastos del siglo XIX. O el arqueológico, un señor museo, con la mandíbula, reconocida a nivel mundial, y los hallazgos neolíticos por el parque de la Draga. Es un placer pasear por Banyoles. Sentarse en la plaza mayor, porticada, ver el románico del monasterio de Sant Esteve, impresionante, o la Pia Almoina medieval, gótica, las casas y las calles, tan pintorescas, y las iglesias, la muralla, la lonja, los canales .. . hay tanto y tanto que visitar en Banyoles. Pero hoy os queremos dar un nuevo motivo para subir con la familia hasta Banyoles. La feria, magnífica, de Sant Martí, que tiene lugar a mediados de noviembre. Además, hay muestra gastròmica, muestra de arte, concursos variados, animación … en fin, todo lo que una feria de tan de alcance comarcal pide. Consulte la programación y baja hasta Banyoles. Il Sinn Fein rivela l’esistenza di una lettera inviata da Gordon Brown a Peter Robinson nel ‘tentativo’ di corrompere il DUP per ottenere il supporto alla devolution

Il Sinn Fein ha oggi prodotto la lettera inviata da Gordon Brown, primo ministro britannico, al leader del DUP Peter Robinson, nonchè primo ministro nordirlandese, contenente un’ulteriore offerta di 20 milioni di sterline, come parte di un accordo che vedrebbe il pagamento dei ex ufficiali part-time del Royal Ulster Constabulary.
Il partito repubblicano sostiene che si tratti di un mero tentativo da parte del governo britannico di “corrompere” il DUP, per ottenerne il sostegno al trasferimento dei poteri di polizia e di giustizia da Westminster a Stormont, gettando così discredito sull’intero processo.
Gerry Kelly, ministro del Sinn Fein, ha affermato: “Quando Gordon Brown ha sollevato questo problema con lui, Martin McGuinness gli disse che tale pagamento sarebbe stato sbagliato e inaccettabile e non era parte del processo di trasferimento in materia di polizia e di giustizia”.
I nuovi fondi offerti da Gordon Brown al DUP non sono parte del pacchetto finanziario (per una somma compresa tra gli 800 milioni di sterline e il miliardo) proposto ai leaders di governo nordirlandesi, per spianare la strada all’approvazione della devolution.
“In un momento di recessione economica, e di pressioni enormi sulle famiglie di lavoratori, questo pagamento è uno spreco di denaro dei contribuenti”, ha sostenuto Kelly che ha anche aggiunto: “Si deve inoltre ricordare che questo è lo stesso governo britannico, che sulla scia del rapporto Eamon/Bradley appose velocemente il proprio veto sul riconoscimento di un risarcimento ai familiari delle vittime del conflitto (nordirlandese).”
Pare che la lettera inviata da Gordon Brown a Peter Robinson, sia arrivata erroneamente tra le mani di Martin McGuinness che sulla base dei principi del power-sharing, condivide gli alti uffici con il primo ministro.

Government letter details police payment (U TV)
The Government has been accused of agreeing to pay former part-time police officers in Northern Ireland £20m in a bid to secure political concessions from the DUP.
Sinn Fein produced a letter on Friday sent by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to DUP leader and Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson making the multi-million pounds offer.
Republicans claimed it was a bid to “buy off” DUP support for the devolution of policing and justice powers from Westminster to Stormont and claimed the government risked bringing the process into disrepute.
Sinn Fein and the DUP have been locked in talks with Mr Brown on efforts to transfer the powers that would effectively see unionists and republicans share responsibility for Northern Ireland’s police and justice system for the first time.
Sinn Fein Junior Minister Gerry Kelly said: “When Gordon Brown raised this issue with ourselves, Martin McGuinness told him that such a payment was wrong and unacceptable and was no part of the process to transfer powers on policing and justice.”
The dispute over the devolution of the powers has threatened the stability of the power-sharing government at Stormont.
And while Sinn Fein has pressed for swift action on the transfer of powers, the DUP has said it wants to proceed with caution to ensure the process is properly stewarded.
Devolution package
Mr Kelly said the Prime Minister had previously sent a separate letter confirming his near £1b funding package for devolution.
But he said the latest offer of funds for former Royal Ulster Constabulary part-time officers, understood to have missed out on earlier financial packages to former members of the force, was not included.
“The detail of the financial package agreed with the British Government between Martin McGuinness and Peter Robinson is set out in the letter from Gordon Brown to the parties,” said Mr Kelly.
“This (further) payment forms no part of it. The effort to transfer policing and justice powers is being brought into disrepute by the British government’s willingness to buy off the DUP.
“At a time of economic downturn, and huge pressures on working families and the disadvantaged this payment is a waste of taxpayers’ money.”
He added: “It should also be remembered that this is the same British government which in the wake of the Eames/Bradley report quickly moved to veto a recognition payment to those bereaved through the course of the conflict.”
Mr Kelly claimed the letter from Mr Brown to Mr Robinson was sent, apparently mistakenly, to the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister at Stormont.
This meant it was automatically copied to Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness, who under the rules of the power-sharing government, shares the top political office with Mr Robinson.

Eirigi ha chiesto l’apertura di un’inchiesta indipendente per stabilire eventuali responsabilità della PSNI alla luce di fatti analoghi nel passato

E’ sempre fitto il mistero sulla morte di John Brady, repubblicano di spicco ritrovato cadavere in una stanza della stazione di polizia di Strand Road a Derry.
E’ proprio la totale mancanza di informazioni a fomentare le ipotesi di eventuali responsabilità a carico del PSNI. Per far luce su quanto possa essere successo, si attendono gli esiti dell’esame autoptico che dovrebbe essere espletato nella giornata odierna.
Brendan McKenna, portavoce di Eirigi, porgendo le condoglianze alla famiglia Brady ha dichiarato: “Data la storia del RUC/PSNI e i centri di detenzione nel nord, è necessario chiedere un’indagine indipendente sia da parte del PSNI e che dallo Stato britannico in merito all’incidente”.
John Brady non è infatti il primo prigioniero a morire sotto custodia negli ultimi anni. Recentissima l’inchiesta aperta per indagare sulla morte di un detenuto presso il carcere di Maghaberry.
Sconcerto proviene anche da fonti del Sinn Fein e da Martina Anderson del Policing Board, soprattutto dovuto al fatto che la morte sia avvenuta in orario diurno.
Chiaro il messaggio dal sito ‘Free John Brady Campaign‘ (difficile la consultazione a causa dei molteplici accessi che ne hanno esaurito la banda a disposizione) che definisce ‘misteriosa’ la morte di Brady.
“Gravi interrogativi sono sorti per il fatto che John fosse stato giudicato in piena forma e di buon umore subito dopo la consultazione avvenuta con il proprio legale, circa un’ora prima del ritrovamento del cadavere. La polizia ha detto che è stato trovato in una ’stanza’. Cercheremo di tenervi sempre aggiornati. “
Il Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson, come ha anticipato ieri, ha disposto l’avvio di un’indagine “equa, indipendente e imparziale” prevedendo soprattutto colloqui con gli ufficiali ed eventuali altri testimoni che sono entrati in contatto con Brady negli istanti precedenti il decesso.
“Una volta che saremo in possesso di tutti i dettagli, saremo in grado di informare i familiari e la comunità su come sia avvenuta questa tragica morte”.
Terry Spencer, a capo della Northern Ireland Police Federation, parlando subito dopo la notizia del decesso di John Brady si  detto fiducioso che gli ufficiali verrano prosciolti da ogni responsabilità così come ha dichiarato anche al Belfast Telegraph.

Police: Don’t blame us for cell death (Blefast Telegraph)
Officers will be cleared of any wrong-doing after a dissident republican prisoner’s suicide in custody, a leading Police Federation figure predicted last night.
Terry Spence was speaking after John Brady was found dead in his cell at Strand Road station in Londonderry on Saturday evening.
Brady had been arrested in the city on Friday and held overnight in relation to an alleged assault in a domestic incident.
A website that had been campaigning for the 40-year-old notorious murderer last night called his death “mysterious”.
Republican splinter group Eirigi called for an independent inquiry “given the history of RUC and PSNI holding centres in the north”.
But Mr Spence, Northern Ireland Police Federation chairman, told the Belfast Telegraph he was confident officers would be cleared of any wrongdoing.
“At this early stage it looks like there was nothing at all to suggest the police were responsible for his death,” Mr Spence said. “The police had no bearing on what happened whatsoever.
“I’m quite sure there will be a thorough investigation and the police will be exonerated from any responsibility.”
Northern Ireland’s Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson yesterday launched an investigation into Mr Brady’s death.
A post mortem, due to be carried out today, is expected to determine how the Strabane man died. The ‘Free John Brady Campaign’ website — which calls for the release of all ‘political hostages’ — said his death was “mysterious”.
“Serious questions have been raised due to the fact that John had a consultation with his solicitor and was in good spirits less than one hour before he was reported dead,” it said. “The police have said he was found in a ‘room’. We will endeavour to keep you posted.”
MP for West Tyrone Pat Doherty said the death of the convicted killer needed to be thoroughly examined.
Sinn Fein MLA and Policing Board member Martina Anderson said the “very fact he died in daylight hours needs to be taken into account”.
Mr Hutchinson said the Ombudsman’s office would conduct “a fair, independent and impartial investigation”.
“We will be interviewing all officers and other witnesses who may have been in contact with Mr Brady in the time leading to his death,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“Once we are in possession of all of the facts we will be able to inform the family and the wider public about how this tragic death happened.”
Eirigi spokesman Brendan McKenna offered condolences to the Brady family.
“Given the history of RUC and PSNI holding centres in the north, we will be calling for an enquiry independent of both the PSNI and the British state into this incident,” Mr McKenna added.
It is understood Mr Brady was on short term prison leave as part of a programme aimed at preparing prisoners for release when he was arrested at the weekend.
Last year, an attempted murder charge against him was was dropped over concerns about DNA evidence.
He had been charged with leaving a bomb under the car of a former RIR soldier in 2002, but the case was reviewed and dropped after a judge criticised low copy number DNA evidence during the Omagh bomb trial.
Mr Brady had been jailed for the |murder of a police officer in 1989.
In 1991, he pleaded guilty to killing RUC Reserve Constable David Black, who died after an under-car booby-trap device exploded near his home on the outskirts of Strabane.
He was initially released on licence in 1998 after the Good Friday Agreement, but his licence was later revoked and he was returned to prison in November 2003.
History of self-harm in jails
John Brady is not the first person to die in custody in Northern Ireland in recent times.
His suicide comes days after four prison service medics were suspended from duty after an investigation into the suicide of an inmate inside the high security Maghaberry jail in Co Antrim.
The staff work in the prison’s medical centre, where convicted sex offender John Anthony Deery was found hanged in August. The 50-year-old died the next day in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. He was the second Maghaberry inmate to kill himself in little over 12 months.
The action against the four healthcare workers comes after a probe into the circumstances of the death by the region’s Prisoner Ombudsman.
While the latest suicide occurred in police custody, and not on the Prison Service’s watch, the death is sure to prompt fresh questions for the authorities on practices for monitoring individuals being held in cells.
Meanwhile, Colin Martin Bell (34) was found dead in his cell at Maghaberry prison in August 2008.
The father-of-two was in a ‘suicide watch’ cell because he had a history of self-harming.
Bell was serving a life sentence for the murder of Michael O’Hare in a flat in Bangor, Co Down, in 2003.

Aidan lavorava dietro il bancone del pub di suo padre, quando uomini armati hanno fatto irruzione nel locale, aprendo il fuoco.
4 feriti e 6 morti, tra cui quella che resterà la vittima più anziana dei Troubles.
“La scena era una carneficina assoluta. I corpi dei morti e dei moribondi erano accatastati uno sull’altro. Eravamo in uno spazio piccolo, nessuno poteva scamparla”.
La relazione che dovrebbe essere resa nota nelle prossime settimane, dovrebbe contenere prove schiaccianti di una collusione dei servizi di sicurezza nella mattanza.
Esistono speculazioni che Hutchinson sia riuscito a collegare al massacro. fino a 4 agenti dei servizi di sicurezza.
La relazione dovrebbe rilevare le gravi carenze investigative, nonchè la mancanza di uno sforzo serio di far luce sull’accaduto.
L’automobile utilizzata per la fuga dalla banda, venne distrutta due anni più tardi dalla polizia mandando in fumo prove forensi fondamentali. Gli investigatori non sfruttarono nemmeno il follicolo di un capello rinvenuto all’interno di un passamontagna recuperato insieme a fucili e tute usate nell’attacco.
Per più di 10 anni i sopravvissuti e i familiari delle vittime si sono trincerati dietro al silenzio, perchè confidenti nelle promesse delle polizia che avrebbe dovuto assicurare alla giustizia i colpevoli. Solo dopo aver appreso dello ’spreco’ di prove ritenute di vitale importanza, è sorto in tutti il dubbio che in realtà si volesse proteggere qualcuno.
“Loro (la polizia) inzialmente ci hanno detto che potevano incastrare gli assassini da una goccia di sudore.
“Ma pur essendo in possesso della vettura usata nella  fuga, delle armi utilizzate, delle tute, dei passamontagna e di un capello di uno degli assassini, nessuno è mai stato accusato. Iniziamo a chiederci se si sta proteggendo qualcuno”.
O’Toole, non nascondendo il timore che la relazione non possa dare piena soddisfazione ai familiari, ha affermato: “Tutto ciò che vogliamo è la verità”.

Jeg så at man planlægger at bygge et universitet i Kina.

Hallooo!!!!

Det er i de store byer her i Danmark at vi har brug for pladserne. Alt for mange bliver pisket ud i de små byer hvor at deres forældre så kommer til at hænge på små usælgelige lejligheder.

Det kan ikke være meningen at fordi at man drømmer om at komme videre i livet skal smide forældre, kæreste og kammerater væk. Det er en for høj pris at betale.

En kammerat som dog har taget turen til Roskilde var ved at dø af grin over at det netop blev Kina dette nye center skulle placeres i. Som han siger. Det har de prøvet. Kinesere er rene slaver som er vant til at blive fortalt hvor skabet står og kan de ikke fatte det, så venter et nakkeskud. Der dukkede nogle op i Roskilde og de var knapt noget 5 meter ned af gangen før at de sad fast og ventede på at blive ført til biblioteket og ovenikøbet at få udpeget hvad de skulle læse og skrive efter.

Det gik derfor hurtigt i sig selv.

Min kammerat sendte mig en artikel som fortæller lidt om at kravene til selvstændighed ikke trænger ind i hos mange udenlandske studerende. De skal bæres på hænder og fødder.

Det kan så medføre at det sammen niveau falder til gene for alle de studerende – ikke mindst de danske, der om nogle betaler gildet.

Jeg husker episoder fra fredagsbaren på Gymnasiet. En fredagsbar er vital for socialiseringsprocessen. Det er bare så nederen, når de ansvarlige studerende har glemt at købe ind.

Der er nogle i min klasse som jeg aldrig har talt med og som jeg kun kender navnene på fordi at jeg kort tid før at jeg skrev dette slog deres navne op. Årsagen er at de ser sig for fine til at drikke sammen med os. De fejrer iøvrigt deres højtid i nat,  så jeg tvivler på at de kommer i skole imorgen.

Men tilbage til univerisitetet i Kina. Hvem har dog fået den vanvittge ide?

Og så skal unge danskere rejse derud. De kommer hurtigt i problemer og så nytter det ikke at de når at flygte ud. Vi husker Camilla Broe, der leger politisk fange i Florida indtil at de kan få en skueproces på benene. Hvem vil risikere sit liv ved at rejse til Kina, hvor loven er noget anderledes end i Danmark?

“Vi skal bare huske at gå op på RUC inden vi bliver alt for stive,” formanede manden, og jeg nikkede naïvt. Fast forward til 18-tiden i går: jeg har allerede drukket halvanden liter øl, og er godt i gang med at fuldbyrde en halv liter til. Tuxen ringer og siger, han står nede ved indgangen. Sören der Deutsches Mann laver hjemmelavet pizzaer på samlebånd. Jon hiver en flaske champagne frem, som smager absolut stygt, men vi drikker den alligevel.

Så selvfølgelig er vi stive når vi når til RUCs Årsfest alligevel. Men vi får en fadøl, hvorefter Jon og Søren prompte forsvinder. Det forlyder senere, at Jon er gået hjem igen. Vi finder Bjørn Røræg, og derefter BorgTu, og til sidst Søren.

Klokken er omkring to om natten da vi beslutter os for at tage hjem til Sørens lejlighed på Korallen og slutte aftenen af på behørig vis.

Det var en god aften. I dag har det været verdens bedste tømmermændsdag. Konen har spillet The Longest Journey mens jeg har set Monty Python. Vi prøvede også at gøre Sørens hjemmelavede-pizza-kunst efter, og det gik djævlme også godt. Dion prøvede at låne mig Ghostbusters II på DVD, fordi jeg kom til at nævne, at jeg var i gang med at se 1′eren med kommentarspor, men efter at være kommet hele vejen op i hans lejlighed finder han ud af, at han ikke kan finde den alligevel.

Der er ingen pointe til denne historie. Årsfesten var god. Tømmermændsdagen er god.

Nu er det så fredag. I går skulle jeg egentlig have været oppe og være speciale-aktiv, men konen havde snot stående ud ad begge ører, så jeg valgte at blive hjemme og lege Nightingale for en dag. Det gav mig så også chancen for at få afprøvet The Longest Journey i Windows 7.

Min første tanke var selvfølgelig, “Yeah, right. Aldrig i livet. Nix. Uh-uh. Ah-ah. No way, josé-bot.”

Og så virker det fandme i første hug alligevel. Ja. Man skal bare slå 3D-acceleration fra, og installere en lille skaldet patch, der forhindrer spillet i at begå selvmord på en enkelt skærm i løbet af kapitel 3. That’s it. Nå ja, og så køre det i XP-compatibility-mode, så Windows 7 ikke tror, at spillet er gået ned når det i virkeligheden bare prøver at loade menuen. That’s it.

Så i går, som en del af min kones rehabilitering, spillede vi The Longest Journey. Det var djævlme hyggeligt.

Det er lige gået op for mig, at jeg har stavet “compatibility” forkert i en lang periode. Hvor skammeligt. Det staves “compatibility”; ikke “compatability”. Syntes nok, det så forkert ud. Gah. Nu bliver jeg snart til en af de tosser, der skriver “it’s” når de mener “its”, og “I would of” i stedet for “I would have”. Gys!

Øh … sidespring der.

Jeg tænker meget på det måske-glemte FMV-spil, jeg har gået og truet med i lang tid. Når vi flytter, konen og jeg, til Roskilde centrum, så har jeg skumle planer om at stjæle Donuts HD-kamera mens han ikke kigger og lave en lille, skaldet tech-demo i min nye lejlighed, bare for at vise resten af verden, at det her er en god idé, og jeg kan lave det rigtigt. Ikke forkert, som Phantasmagoria II eller Ripper (følg de to links, btw – de er fantastiske!). Men rigtigt! Jeg har mine helt egne planer om hvordan et rigtigt FMV-spil skal se ud. And I’ll fucking do it.

Mest fordi et FMV-spil ville indeholde alle mine yndlings-nørd-elementer: Jeg ville få lov at lege med film, det er nummer 1. Jeg elsker at skyde film og redigere film. Nummer 2: Jeg ville få lov at lege med AGS og lave adventurespil, hvilket også er ren nørd-gasme for mig. Nummer 3: Jeg ville få lov at skrive musik til spillet — inkl. de forskellige FMV-sekvenser — og at skrive musik til en film er noget, jeg gerne har villet prøve længe.

Så dér. Dérfor skal FMV-spillet ske, på den ene eller den anden måde. Om det så blot bliver som et skaldet lille tech-demo, jeg laver all by myself i min nye, halv-møblerede lejlighed, so be it.

Anyway.

I aften er der Årsfest på RUC. Jeg skal op til Vandelay og Sören Der Deutsches Kammerat for en lille fælles-aftensmad og en kop mjød før vi begiver os over på campus. Min kones kjole, indkøbt specielt til dette formål, ankom her i morges, for en lille halv times tid siden, mens jeg endnu var særdeles upåklædt. Elsker at freake delivery-guys ud.

Per oltre 30 anni,  in Irlanda del Nord, siamo stati a guardare mentre i nostri figli, mogli e mariti venivano  abbattuti e mutilato con proiettili di gomma sparati dall’esercito britannico e RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary).
Campagne delle famiglie, senza sosta in tutto il mondo, per vedere queste armi letali vietate.
Tutti i principali gruppi per la tutela dei diritti umani in Europa e negli Stati Uniti, hanno  sostenuto la nostra richiesta.
Ci era stato promesso un nuovo inizio, con una riforma del servizio di polizia ponendo l’accento sul rispetto dei diritti umani e nuovi metodi di polizia.
Nel 2004, Jane Kennedy, l’allora ministro della sicurezza promise il ritiro dei proiettili di gomma entro il Natale 2005. Quello che lei non disse è che sarebbe stati sostituiti da un altro tipo di proiettile di gomma.
Nel gennaio 2007  il Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde, espresse il suo rammarico per la perdita di vite umane a causa dei proiettili di gomma e ribadì  l’innocenza delle vittime, soprattutto dei bambini. Egli dichiarò inoltre che non aveva intenzione di usarli come un metodo di ordine pubblico o di controllo della folla e ha detto che non sarebbero stati nuovamente utilizzati in situazioni di rivolta.
Il 13 luglio abbiamo visto con orrore, come il Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) abbia  sparato 17 proiettili di gomma ad Ardoyne. Sono stati di nuovo utilizzati contro i rivoltosi a Short Strand il 31 agosto scorso.
Che cosa è successo alla dichiarazione di Hugh Orde, e alla sua determinazione a non usare mai più i  proiettili di gomma ancora una volta, anche in situazioni di rivolta?
Lo sparo di proiettili di gomma, anche nei momenti difficili della polizia, è una ricetta per il disastro. E’ solo una questione di tempo prima che qualcuno venga ucciso – e molto probabilmente sarà un bambino.
Recentemente a Londra, ci sono stati disordini molto gravi tra i tifosi rivali e occasione  in cui molte persone sono rimaste ferite, tra cui alcuni accoltellate. La polizia è riuscita a ripristinare l’ordine pubblico e non un proiettile di gomma è stato utilizzato o addirittura contemplato.
L’eredità di plastica gomma ci ha lasciato 17 morti, centinaia di feriti, mutilati e sfigurati, molti dei quali per la vita.
Hanno lasciato un catalogo di stragi, di dolore e di oppressione settaria.
L’uso continuato di queste armi è un ostacolo sulla strada della pace.
Come possiamo chiedere ai giovani nazionalisti di aderire ad un servizio di polizia in cui possono in cui può essere loro ordinato di sparare queste armi, essendo consapevoli dell’alienazione, dell’amarezza e della sfiducia che hanno causato in tutta comunità nazionalista?
Metodi migliori di polizia, in particolare il dialogo nelle aree di ‘flash point’ (aree conosciuto come focolai di rivolta, ndr) prima che i disordini dilaghino, è una priorità. L’alternativa più semplice di fronteggiare le sommosse semplicemente sparando proiettili di goma, ci riporta indietro di anni.
Queste armi devono essere rimosse una volta per tutte dalla nostra società.

Call for Removal of Plastic Bullets (Troops Out Movement)
Letter from Jim Mcabe, whose wife Nora was murdered by the RUC with a Plastic Bullet
For over 30 years, in the north of Ireland, we watched while our children, wives, and husbands were slaughtered and maimed with plastic bullets fired by the British Army and RUC (police).
The families campaigned relentlessly throughout the world to have these lethal weapons banned.
Every major Human Rights group in Europe and the USA supported our call.
We were promised a new beginning with a reformed police service with emphasis put on respect for human rights and new policing methods.
In 2004, Jane Kennedy, the then security minister promised the phasing out of plastic bullets by Christmas 2005. What she didn’t say was that they would be replaced by another type of plastic bullet.
In January 2007 Chief Constable Hugh Orde expressed his regret at the loss of life by plastic bullets and reaffirmed the innocence of those killed, especially the children. He also stated he did not intend to use them as a method of public order or crowd control and said they would not be used in riot situations again.
On 13 July we watched in horror as the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) fired 17 plastic bullets in Ardoyne. They were again used on rioters in the Short Strand on Monday 31 August.
What happened to Hugh Orde’s statement and his determination not to ever use plastic bullets again, even in riot situations?
The firing of plastic bullets, even in difficult policing situations, is a recipe for disaster. It is only a matter of time before some one is killed – and it will most probably be a child.
Recently in London there was very serious rioting between rival football fans and the police at the West Ham versus Millwall match in which many people were hurt, including some being stabbed. The police managed to restore law and order and not a plastic bullet was used or even contemplated.
The plastic bullet legacy has left 17 people dead, hundreds more injured, maimed and disfigured, many for life.
They have left a catalogue of carnage, grief and sectarian oppression.
The continued use of these weapons is an obstacle on the road to peace.
How can we ask young nationalists to join a policing service when they may be ordered to fire these weapons, given the alienation, bitterness, and mistrust they caused throughout nationalist communities?
Good policing methods, especially dialogue at flash point areas before events escalate, is a priority. The alternative to simply cope with riot by simply firing plastic bullets will set us back years.
These weapons have to be removed once and for all from our society.

In occasione del 10° anniversario del Patten Report, l’autore elogia i progressi del PSNI in Irlanda del Nord definendola un esempio di polizia in una comunità divisa

Nel giorno in cui il PSNI decide per la chiusura di altre 3 stazioni di polizia oltre alle 26 già nella lista, Lord Patten, il riformatore della polizia in Irlanda del Nord,  in occasione del 10° anniversario dell’omonimo Patten Report ha affermato che la polizia è stata chiamata fuori dal cuore del dibattito politico.
Lord Pattern promosse nel 1999 una revisione della RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary), che venne rimpiazzata dall’attuale Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Tra i punti cardini del rapporto, l’aumento del numero di cattolici in forza alla polizia.
“Una delle cose che si è trasformata nel corso degli ultimi 10 anni e un cambiamento fondamentale, è che ora l’Irlanda del Nord ha ora un servizio di polizia che opera per l’intera comunità”.
“E’ sostenuta da tutta la comunità ed è responsabile di tutta la comunità” ed aggiunge che nonostante le ultime azioni firmate dai dissidenti, “la situazione si è trasformata negli ultimi anni e quanto è successo in Irlanda del Nord, anche grazie alle forze di polizia, viene considerato dalle altre comunità, come il modello su come le forze di polizia devono operare all’interno di una comunità divisa”.
La Patten Commission tornerà a riunirsi giovedì (oggi) presso il Community Relations Council della Queen’s University. Nell’occasione verrà discussa la creazione di un nuovo settore pubblico in una comunità condivisa, e l’importanza della piena collaborazione tra la stessa e le istituzioni.
“Ci sono altre sfide da superare per rendere l’Irlanda del Nord una società veramente integrata. La pace non è soltanto l’assenza di un conflitto. Essa necessita che le persone, le organizzazioni e le istituzioni lavorino insieme e in modo integrato”, ha dichiarato Duncan Morrow, Capo Esecutivo del Community Relations Council.
Il Ministro della Sicurezza Paul Goggings ha affermato che i governi britannico e irlandese, finanzieranno una pubblicazione a celebrazione del decennale del Pattern Report che ripercorrerà i passi della Pattern Commission e gli insegnamenti recepiti sia dalla polizia in Irlanda del Nord  che in tutto il resto del mondo.

PSNI is a ‘model’ – Patten (U TV)
According to Chris Patten, the PSNI has become a model on how to deal with policing in a divided community.
Speaking on the tenth anniversary of the Patten report, which reformed policing in Northern Ireland, Lord Patten said policing had been taken out of the heart of the political debate.
The panel led by Lord Patten promoted an overhaul of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1999 which led to its replacement with the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
It envisaged an increased proportion of Catholics in the force, a reduction in numbers to post-conflict levels and greater accountability.
“One of the things which has been transformed in the last 10 years and one of the things which has changed fundamentally is that Northern Ireland now has a police service which works for the whole community”, Lord Patten told UTV.
“It is supported by the whole community and is accountable to the whole community. Policing has been taken out of the heart of the political debate.
“There is still, alas, some examples which we have seen in the last few days of wickedness, the plotting of atrocities by a few extremists.
“But the situation has been transformed in the last few years and what has happened in Northern Ireland, not least thanks to police officers themselves is regarded in other communities as the model of how to deal with policing in a divided community.”
Conference
Members of the Patten Commission will return to Belfast on Thursday to discuss what lessons have been learned since 1999.
Kathleen O’Toole, now chief inspector of the Garda Siochana, and Peter Smith QC will also examine how a new public sector can be built in a shared society.
The conference is hosted by the Community Relations Council at Queen’s University.
Ms O’Toole said: “In recent decades there has been a remarkable evolution in democratic policing.
“There is no better example of that than Northern Ireland. The Patten Commission set the stage for a ‘new beginning’ for policing, but ultimate success depends entirely on strong community partnerships and collaboration.”
Duncan Morrow, chief executive of the CRC, said: “The process of policing change was a challenging and difficult one which required political, organisational and community leadership to implement.
“Other challenges still exist to make Northern Ireland a truly integrated society. Peace is not just the absence of conflict. It requires people, organisations and institutions to work together in an integrated way.
“So many of our social structures are still segregated. This event will help us explore the significant aspects of policing change and allow us to think more broadly about how to build a cohesive and shared Northern Ireland.”
Other attendees will include Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie, UUP MLA Basil McCrea, former police Deputy Chief Constable Paul Leighton and Victims’ Commission member Brendan McAllister.
Security Minister Paul Goggins said the British and Irish governments are supporting production of a book marking the tenth anniversary of the Patten Report.
The book will reflect on the work of the Commission, and the implementation of its report, focusing on the important lessons learned for policing in Northern Ireland and around the world.
Mr Goggins said: “Ten years on the Patten reforms remain the gold standard for transparent, accountable and progressive policing internationally.”

Ny medie-, film- og kunstform i virtuelle verdener
MACHINIMA er det seneste skud på stammen af brugerdrevet innovation i virtuelle verdener – en ny medie-, film- og kunstform, der er under hastig udvikling.
Machinima er film eller video, der er optaget i virtuelle verdener. Formen er nu så udbredt, at flere filminstruktører verden over producerer machinima, og i Danmark har bl.a. filminstruktøren Per Fly produceret scener i sin nye film ved hjælp af machinima i World of Warcraft.
Vi skyder en nordisk og international konkurrence om bedste machinima produktion i gang på Roskilde Universitet, RUC, hvor flere MACHINIMA forskningsprojekter er ved at blive søsat. Konkurrencen annonceres i forbindelse med indvielsen af det nye design af RUCs forskningsø i Second Life:
”Metrotopia – City of Superheros and –heroines”

Siden 2008 er innovationsmulighederne i virtuelle verdener blevet undersøgt af et hold forskere ved Roskilde Universitet (RUC) og Copenhagen Business School (CBS). Forskningen er ledet af lektor Sisse Siggaard Jensen, Institut for Kommunikation, Virksomhed og Informationsteknologier, RUC, og er finansieret af Det Strategiske Forskningsråd (KINO). Må lige starte med at sige, at jeg for tiden er en meget, meget glad mand. Ny lejlighed – snart færdig med speciale – for ikke at nævne at være gift med en skøn pige, der iøvrigt laver verdens bedste “boller i karry”.

Men derfor kan man jo godt lukke lidt bitterhed ud alligevel.

“Det er næsten umuligt ikke at hænge på to huslejer den første måned,” siger damen bag disken med et beklagende træk på skuldrene. Okay, det er der så ikke så meget at gøre ved. Men hun får lige sneget følgende bemærkning ind, der øjeblikkeligt får min raseri-alarm til at blinke rødt: “Der er jo nogle udlejningsvanskeligheder der hvor I bor nu.”

Nå, er der det?! Kunne det måske være fordi I har ladet en eller anden mensakandidat designe nogle studenterboliger, der i bedste fald kan beskrives som skotøjsæsker af beton, hvor lokummet fylder halvdelen af lejlighedens samlede kvadratmeter og huslejen er så svimlende astronomisk, at det ville give selv en ph.d’er i matematik hovedpine? Kunne det måske være fordi jeres umiddelbare løsning på dette udlejningsproblemer er at smide de tomme lejligheder i nakken på “sociale tilfælde”, der tuner knallerter klokken tre om natten og har Brøndby-håndklæder hængende i vinduerne?

Det sender jo heller ikke et lidt forkvaklet signal at kræve studiebevis fra egentlige kollegiebeboere for “privilegiet” at bo her, men lade DJ Alligator-fans spille deres autotuner-lort lørdag aften på et decibelniveau så selv et DSB-lokomotiv ville sige “nu’ det nok”. Fucking idioter.

Baby Jake Harvey går iøvrigt ad helvede til. Nu er der en til, der er faldet fra. Jeg må indrømme, jeg er fristet til at skrive noget sarkastisk, for jeg synes ærlig talt hans begrundelse var lidt hul i hovedet (og han var fræk nok til at kalde projektet for “B.S.”), men jeg må nok hellere være meget ukarakteristisk voksen om det. Slemmere er det jo heller ikke end at vi nu bare er nede på 11 deltagere. Og 11 er også et pænt tal.

Jeg gætter iøvrigt på, at der har været “Marbjerg Mark-show” for de nye RUC’ere i dag. Stien op til Trekroner station flyder med ihjeltrådte mariekiks.

Hvor er det godt, at Spoony kører riff på Ripper. Bitterhed elsker kammeratskab.

Nå ja – i går lavede jeg det her. Lavede også en MySpace. Rotten har sagt ja til at være vokalist. Han vil begynde at føre “vredesdagbog” så han har noget konstruktivt at råbe om. Det synes jeg er fedt.

Cauto benevenuto del Sinn Fein a Matt Baggott

La nomina del nuovo Chief Constable del PSNI ha segnato un passo storico per il Sinn Fein, che per la prima volta ha preso posto nel Policing Board.
E stupisce il fatto che sia stato proprio quello di Alex Maskey, il benvenuto più caloroso.
“Egli non si farà alcuna illusione, farà il suo dovere nei  termini di ciò che la polizia è quì, di ciò è stato fatto e di ciò che sarà necessario e giusto fare”.
Non dello stesso avviso è apparso Jim Allister del Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV), il quale ha dichiarato sprezzante: “L’ottenere la benedizione del Sinn Fein / IRA è ben lungi dall’essere una buona raccomandazione, giudicherò il nuovo Chief Constable sulla base del  suo rendimento.”
Allister è stato molto critico soprattutto nei confronti di Sir Hugh Orde, Chief Constable uscente, accusandolo di aver ‘denudato’ il PSNI della capacità di opporsi al terrorismo e di essere stato il fulcro della politicizzazione delle forze di polizia in Irlanda del Nord.
“Sono fiducioso che la sua sostituzione sarà un miglioramento e, in particolare, per coloro che hanno prestato servizio nel RUC, i quali non saranno svantaggiati dalla nuova leadership.”
Altri messaggi di approvazione sono giunti dal ministro degli esteri Micheál Martin e dal laburtista Keith Vaz che ha affermato: “Il PSNI  è uno dei più importanti posti di lavoro nella polizia britannica, con enormi sfide e le faccio i miei migliori auguri per il suo bene”.

New police chief gets historic SF welcome (NewsLetter)
Northern Ireland’s new police chief yesterday received a cautious welcome from Sinn Fein as republicans – for the first time – praised a new chief constable’s appointment.
Former IRA internee Alex Maskey, who made history when he became the first Sinn Fein councillor in Belfast and then the first Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of the city, yesterday became the first Sinn Fein member to welcome a police chief constable to office.
The South Belfast MLA, who sits on the Policing Board, was one of the four political representatives involved in interviewing candidates for the PSNI’s top job, which went to Leicestershire chief constable Matt Baggott.
And, in a measure of dramatic political changes in the Province, the most welcoming statement came from the twice-interned Mr Maskey, something which made the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) wary of the new man.
Secretary of State Shaun Woodward said that he hoped the unanimous decision of the four main political parties to back Mr Baggott’s appointment would increase confidence in the police.
Mr Maskey said of the new chief constable: “Certainly he convinced myself as he did all the other members of the panel yesterday that he is very sensitive to how to police in a diverse society.
“He will be under no illusions as he will have had to do his homework in terms of what the policing environment here is, what it has been and where it needs to be.
“He has said himself that he wants to bring the PSNI forward now on the rest of the journey.”
But Mr Maskey added: “He knows that there is a process of change – the Patten requirements are there, they are still not fully delivered and he is committed to delivering on all of that.”
TUV leader Jim Allister, who has been sharply critical of outgoing chief constable Sir Hugh Orde, said that he would judge Mr Baggott on his performance.
“Though coming to office with the blessing of Sinn Fein/IRA is far from a good recommendation, I will judge the new chief constable on his performance.”
The former MEP accused Sir Hugh of “denuding the PSNI of a terrorist-fighting capacity and adequate intelligence gathering facilities” and said that he had been a “lynchpin in the politicisation of policing in Northern Ireland”.
“I would call on the new chief constable to reverse Orde’s dangerous policy of wholesale removal of personal protection weapons from former members of the security forces and unlike Orde to come clean on how many convicted terrorists have themselves been issued with PPWs.
“I trust his replacement will be an improvement and in particular that for the sake of political expediency those who served gallantly in the RUC will not be disadvantaged under the new leadership.”
Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin congratulated Mr Baggott on his appointment and added: “In particular, I welcome his indication that the issue of community policing will remain an important priority in his own future work and that of the PSNI as a whole.
And a senior Labour MP last night said that he was “genuinely surprised” at Matt Baggott’s move from Leicestershire Constabulary to the PSNI.
Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, chairman of the House of Commons’ Home Affairs Committee, paid tribute to Mr Baggott’s work as chief constable of the local police force and said that he believed he would be a good PSNI chief constable.
“Matt Baggott has been an outstanding Chief Constable for Leicestershire,” he told the News Letter.
“I am genuinely surprised at this appointment and am disappointed that he will no longer be serving the people of Leicestershire as he has done for so many years.
“Hugh Orde will be a very difficult act to follow but I am sure that Mr Baggott will perform his task with distinction.
“The PSNI post is one of the most important British policing jobs with enormous challenges and I wish him well in meeting them.” “Over the term of office of Sir Hugh Orde, significant progress has been made towards securing widespread cross-community acceptance of Northern Ireland’s new policing arrangements.
“A further key step in this direction will be taken once full devolution of policing and justice takes place, a development which I hope to see completed over the coming months.”

Erano 150 le persone stipate al Conway Education Centre di Belfast, in occasione del convegno organizzato da éirígí per discutere del passato e del futuro dell’internamento che continua ad essere una piaga dell’Europa Civile.
L’incontro si è snodato attraverso le testimonianze di Ruhal Ahmed, Pádraigín Drinan, Caitríona Duffy e Gerry McDonnell.

Gerry ‘Blute’ McDonnell, attivista repubblicano, ex blanketman, evaso dal Long Kesh nel 1983, un background di 23 anni di carcere, ha cercato di spiegare l’internamento con gli occhi di un prigioniero e i disagi vissuti dalle famiglie degli internati.

Pádraigín Drinan, avvocato, ha parlato del caso degli “Hooded Men”, ovvero un gruppo di uomini selezionati per le torture all’epoca dell’ntroduzione dell’internamente nelle Sei Contee il padre di Brian Shivers fu uno di loro, ndr). Una mera violazione dei diritti umani.

Ruhal Ahmed, catturato dall’esercito americano in Afghanistan e rinchiuso a Guantanamo da dove poi è stato rilasciato nel 2004. Era uno dei ‘Tipton Three’, la cui vicenda è stata narrata da Channel 4 nello special ‘Road To Guantanamo‘. Egli dato al meeting la sua testimonianza sugli abusi e sulle violazione dei diritti umani subiti in nome della lotta al terrorismo.

Infine è intervenuta Caitríona Duffy, figlia di Colin Duffy attualmente detenuto nel carcere di Maghaberry per l’attentato alla base armata di Massereene. Colin Duffy è uno dei primi cittadini irlandesi ad essere stato incarcerato sulla base delle legge che prevede la dentenzione sino a 28 giorni senza accusa e senza processo. Il prominente repubblicano è già stato vittima di errori giudiziari in un paio di occasioni e  Caitríona ha raccontato come suo padre sia vittima delle forze di polizia (prima il RUC e poi il PSNI) sin da quando era bambino.

Meeting in Belfast Recalls Internment Past and Present (éirígí)
Following two successful events in Enniskillen and Dublin marking the thirty-eighth anniversary of the introduction of internment, éirígí Bhéal Feirste held a public meeting to mark the 38th anniversary of internment in Conway Mill in Belfast.
Upwards of 150 people packed into the Conway Education Centre on Sunday [August 9] to hear speakers Ruhal Ahmed, Pádraigín Drinan, Caitríona Duffy and Gerry McDonnell. Chaired by éirígí national vice-chairperson Rab Jackson, the talk was both thought-provoking and emotional.
Gerry ‘Blute’ McDonnell, who gave his account of being interned in the Long Kesh Cages, is a republican activist, a former blanketman, 1983 H-Block escapee and spent a total of 23 years incarcerated. Gerry gave a personal account of the hardship endured by the internees and their families.
Belfast-based lawyer Pádraigín Drinan then spoke about cases of the Hooded Men, whom she represented during their long fight for justice. The Hooded Men were a group of men selected for torture at the time that internment was introduced in the Six Counties in August 1971. She told of this human rights abuse and gave a forthright and moving recollection of that time in Irish history.
Ruhal Ahmed, who travelled from Birmingham to speak at éirígí’s event, is a British resident who was abducted by the US army in Afghanistan and subsequently detained in Guantanamo Bay. Ahmed, who was released in March 2004, spoke passionately about his experiences in US custody and the abuses of civil liberties inherent in the so-called War on Terror. One of the ‘Tipton Three’, whose horrendous experience was documented in Channel 4’s ‘Road to Guantanamo’, Ahmed related to the experiences of Gerry Mc Donnell and the Long Kesh Cages internees.
Finally, Caitríona Duffy from Lurgan spoke about the case of her father, Colin, who was one of the first Irish citizens to be detained under the draconian 28-day detention legislation. Colin has already been the victim of two previous miscarriages of justice. The articulate 18-year-old spoke of the vendetta the RUC/PSNI held against her father since she was a child.
éirígí spokesperson Seán Mac Brádaigh said: “Internment without trial in 1971 left a mark on nationalist communities across the North that lingers to this day. But it is important to remember that internment is not merely an historical event. The British government is still denying people the right to a fair trial, in the Six Counties and elsewhere. 28-day detention is a de facto form of internment.
“On behalf of éirígí I would like to thank the speakers and audience for attending today, especially Ruhal Ahmed who travelled from England to speak at the meeting. éirígí will continue to actively oppose modern day internment without trial and urges others to do likewise.”

Nel documento audio che segue David McKitterick, corrispondente dell’Independent e Denis Murray, ex corrispondente della BBC, discutono sulle ragioni per cui nessun Peace Wall è stato ancora abbattuto.
