There are no clear and detailed records as to who really gave the name, “Santa Claus.” Many authors identified Santa

excerpt from google images, credits to http://www.chrisd.ca/blog/16911/kildonan-place-shopping-centre-free-santa-photos/

Claus to St. Nicolaus. But some believed that the words, “Santa Claus” may have been abbreviated from the Dutch title of Melchior which is “Sinterklaas.”

Note: What was mentioned in the Bible is “Maggi” or “Wisemen,” not “Three Kings.” On the other hand, names were not also mentioned. The name Melchior, etc. may only be given by an author of a published child’s tales related to Christmas or Three Wise Men.

Historical records show that the name “St. A Claus” appeared in the American press as early as 1773. On 1809, author Washington Irving wrote the first detailed information about the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas, under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker. And on 1823, writer Clement Clarke Moore wrote the first Americanized Santa Claus story through a poem entitled, “A Visit From Saint Nicholas (more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”). On Irving’s version, there were details as the names of the reindeer; Santa Claus’s laughs, winks, and nods; and the method by which Saint Nicholas, referred to as an elf, returns up the chimney. There were writings that the source of insperation and name were pointing to the legend of Sinter Klaas, as brought by Dutch to New York in the 17th century.

Clearly, Santa Claus story was one of the most ebraced children’s tales and/or legend worldwide, even by non-believers of Jesus Christ or by non-Christians. It bacame a yearly world wide hit that first started in America. Although it was first conceptualized in a form of literature, it was later picked-up by the creative advertising that paved way to global commercialization of Christmas. Santa Claus of today is far different from what early Americans were celebrating. Then, the early Dutch-Americans knew Saint Nicholas as the patron Saint of children and were characterized as a thin, stately, stern, forgiving person with a white beard and Bishop robe.

Many theological writings exposed the similarities of Santa Claus to other pagan. Many religious groups even discourage the patronization as it diverts the true meaning and story of Christmas. Sadly, the world still embraces the story because it now being use to commercialized the season. Creative Advertising plays a big part. Coca Cola advertising was known to originally use Santa Claus on one of their vintage advertisements.

Finally…. Christmas is here, the time for Love and laughter. The time when all the loved ones get together and share the happiness of Jesus’s birth, The Saviour of the world. Exchanging gifts, singing carols, visiting friends and relatives, fun and games, it’s all part of Christmas. It is a special time of the year for which the whole world keeps waiting. Finally when it comes, their hearts gets filled with love and a special feeling

” Wow…! Christmas..! “

It is also a time to make resolutions. Resolutions to change ourselves and hoping for a wonderful year ahead. It is also a time to be thankful for all the blessing showered on us throughout the year. Children wait for Santa, hoping that this year he has something really cool for them and Santa (their Dad, obviously) wait for the kids to sleep and then hide the presents in and around the crib. Mothers busy in the kitchen making wine, cakes and trying out special recepies hoping to make Christmas enjoyable and also helping kids to make the crib. It’s a time for joy for each and every member of the family.

On Christmas night, the most beautiful night of the year everybody gets dressed up at their best, and head to the church to celebrate the birth of Jesus starting with the Holy Mass. Singing songs, wishing everyone.. oooh…Happiness spreads…! Each and every one feels a special warmth in their hearts, a special bonding to baby Jesus. Oh, I cant wait for Christmas..

Hope u have a very bright and Blessed Christmas and an Awesome New Year..!

Cheers!

Keep reading to find information about the history of Santa Claus, his earliest origins, and how he became the jolly man in red that we know today.

The Legend of St. Nicholas

Saint Nicholas

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a positive reputation, especially in Holland.

Sinter Klass Comes to New York

Sinter Klaas

St. Nicholas made his first inroads into American popular culture towards the end of the 18th century. In December 1773, and again in 1774, a New York newspaper reported that groups of Dutch families had gathered to honor the anniversary of his death.

The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick’s Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas). In 1804, John Pintard, a member of the New York Historical Society, distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas at the society’s annual meeting. The background of the engraving contains now-familiar Santa images including stockings filled with toys and fruit hung over a fireplace. In 1809, Washington Irving helped to popularize the Sinter Klaas stories when he referred to St. Nicholas as the patron saint of New York in his book, The History of New York. As his prominence grew, Sinter Klaas was described as everything from a “rascal” with a blue three-cornered hat, red waistcoat, and yellow stockings to a man wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a “huge pair of Flemish trunk hose.”

Shopping Mall Santas

Gift-giving, mainly centered around children, has been an important part of the Christmas celebration since the holiday’s rejuvenation in the early 19th century. Stores began to advertise Christmas shopping in 1820, and by the 1840s, newspapers were creating separate sections for holiday advertisements, which often featured images of the newly-popular Santa Claus. In 1841, thousands of children visited a Philadelphia shop to see a life-size Santa Claus model. It was only a matter of time before stores began to attract children, and their parents, with the lure of a peek at a “live” Santa Claus. In the early 1890s, the Salvation Army needed money to pay for the free Christmas meals they provided to needy families. They began dressing up unemployed men in Santa Claus suits and sending them into the streets of New York to solicit donations. Those familiar Salvation Army Santas have been ringing bells on the street corners of American cities ever since.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore, an Episcopal minister, wrote a long Christmas poem for his three daughters entitled, “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore’s poem, which he was initially hesitant to publish due to the frivolous nature of its subject, is largely responsible for our modern image of Santa Claus as a “right jolly old elf” with a portly figure and the supernatural ability to ascend a chimney with a mere nod of his head! Although some of Moore’s imagery was probably borrowed from other sources, his poem helped to popularize Christmas Eve – Santa Claus waiting for the children to get to sleep the now-familiar idea of a Santa Claus who flew from house to house on Christmas Eve – in “a miniature sleigh” led by eight flying reindeer, whom he also named – leaving presents for deserving children. “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” created a new and immediately popular American icon. In 1881, political cartoonist Thomas Nast drew on Moore’s poem to create the first likeness that matches our modern image of Santa Claus. His cartoon, which appeared in Harper’s Weekly, depicted Santa as a rotund, cheerful man with a full, white beard, holding a sack laden with toys for lucky children. It is Nast who gave Santa his bright red suit trimmed with white fur, North Pole workshop, elves, and his wife, Mrs. Claus.

The Many Names of Santa

18th-century America’s Santa Claus was not the only St. Nicholas-inspired gift-giver to make an appearance at Christmastime. Similar figures were popular all over the world. Christkind or Kris Kringle was believed to deliver presents to well-behaved Swiss and German children. Meaning “Christ child,” Christkind is an angel-like figure often accompanied by St. Nicholas on his holiday missions. In Scandinavia, a jolly elf named Jultomten was thought to deliver gifts in a sleigh drawn by goats. English legend explains that Father Christmas visits each home on Christmas Eve to fill children’s stockings with holiday treats. Pere Noel is responsible for filling the shoes of French children. In Russia, it is believed that an elderly woman named Babouschka purposely gave the wise men wrong directions to Bethlehem so that they couldn’t find Jesus. Later, she felt remorseful, but could not find the men to undo the damage. To this day, on January 5, Babouschka visits Russian children leaving gifts at their bedsides in the hope that one of them is the baby Jesus and she will be forgiven. In Italy, a similar story exists about a woman called La Befana, a kindly witch who rides a broomstick down the chimneys of Italian homes to deliver toys into the stockings of lucky children.

Rudolph: The Ninth Reindeer

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph, “the most famous reindeer of all,” was born over a hundred years after his eight flying counterparts. The red-nosed wonder was the creation of Robert L. May, a copywriter at the Montgomery Ward department store.

In 1939, May wrote a Christmas-themed story-poem to help bring holiday traffic into his store. Using a similar rhyme pattern to Moore’s “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” May told the story of Rudolph, a young reindeer who was teased by the other deer because of his large, glowing, red nose. But, When Christmas Eve turned foggy and Santa worried that he wouldn’t be able to deliver gifts that night, the former outcast saved Christmas by leading the sleigh by the light of his red nose. Rudolph’s message—that given the opportunity, a liability can be turned into an asset—proved popular. Montgomery Ward sold almost two and a half million copies of the story in 1939. When it was reissued in 1946, the book sold over three and half million copies. Several years later, one of May’s friends, Johnny Marks, wrote a short song based on Rudolph’s story (1949). It was recorded by Gene Autry and sold over two million copies. Since then, the story has been translated into 25 languages and been made into a television movie, narrated by Burl Ives, which has charmed audiences every year since 1964.

Christmas is the biggest holiday on the American calendar. But how did it evolve into such a massive event?

The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse, or “Christ’s Mass.” Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus for members of the Christian religion. Most historians peg the first celebration of Christmas to Rome in 336 A.D.

In the United States, Christmas was not really anything special until the 1860s. 1867 was the first year that Macy’s department store in New York City remained open until midnight on Christmas Eve. 1874 was the year of the first window displays with a Christmas theme at Macy’s. It has snowballed from there. The whole idea of giving presents on Christmas is something that came from this retail push, along with the effect of a single poem.

It is hard to imagine that one poem could have such a gigantic effect, but it certainly has. It is amazing but true that the common, popular view of Santa that we all have today, along with all the crazy things around Santa like the sleigh, the reindeer and the chimney, all came largely from two publishing events that occurred in the 1800s and one advertising campaign in the 20th century.

Clement Moore wrote “The Night Before Christmas” in 1822 for his family. It was picked up by a newspaper, then reprinted in magazines and it spread like wildfire. If you read the poem you will find that he names the reindeer, invents the sleigh, comes up with the chimney and the bag of toys, etc. Nearly everyone in America has been able to recognize or recite this poem since the 1830s.

Then, between 1863 and 1886, Harper’s Weekly (a popular magazine of the time) ran a series of engravings by Thomas Nast. From these images come the concepts of Santa’s workshop, Santa reading letters, Santa checking his list and so on. Coca-Cola also played a role in the Santa image by running a set of paintings by Haddon Sundblom in its ads between 1931 to 1964.

The whole story of Rudolf appeared, out of nowhere, in 1939. Santas at Montgomery Ward stores gave away 2.4 million copies of a booklet entitled “Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer.” The story was written by a person in the advertising department named Robert May, and the booklet was illustrated by Denver Gillen. In 1949, Gene Autry sang a musical version of the poem and it was a run-away best-seller. The Rudolf song is second only to “White Christmas” in popularity. The song “(I’m Dreaming of a) White Christmas,” written by Irving Berlin for the movie “Holiday Inn” (1942) and sung by Bing Crosby, is one of the best selling songs of all time.

The 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days that separate Christmas day on December 25 from Epiphany, which is celebrated January 6. Depending on the church, January 6 may mark Christ’s baptism (the Catholic tradition), or it may mark the day that the wise men visited the baby Jesus with their gifts. The song demonstrates that some people once stretched out their gifts (and gave some fairly elaborate gifts…) over the full 12 days, rather than stacking them all up on the morning of December 25.

The Christmas tree began as a German tradition, dating back as early as 700 A.D. In the 1800s the tradition of a Christmas tree was widespread in Germany, then moved to England and then America through Pennsylvanian German immigrants. In Victorian times, people had already started decorating trees with candies and cakes hung with ribbon. In 1880 Woolworth’s first sold manufactured Christmas tree ornaments, and they caught on very quickly. Martin Luther, in the 16th century, is credited as being the first person to put candles on a tree, and the first electrically lighted Christmas tree appeared in 1882. Calvin Coolidge in 1923 ceremoniously lit the first outdoor tree at the White House, starting that long tradition.

Poinsettias were attached to Christmas starting in 1828. Joel Roberts Poinsett, then the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, imported the plant from Mexico.

Mistletoe has apparently been used as a decoration in houses for thousands of years and is also associated with many pagan rituals. According to the book Extraordinary Origins of Ordinary Things by Charles Panati, “the church forbade the use of mistletoe in any form, mindful of its idolatrous associations. As a substitute, it suggested holly. The sharply pointed leaves were to symbolize the thorns in Christ’s crown and the red berries drops of his blood. Holly became a nativity tradition. The Christian ban on mistletoe was in effect throughout the Middle Ages. Surprisingly, as late as the 20th century, there were churches in England that forbade the wearing of mistletoe sprigs and corsages during services.”

Why do you hear the same songs over and over again? There is a set of songs that are played continuously during the Christmas Season. Here’s a pretty complete list:

- Away In A Manger
- Carol of the Bells
- Deck The Halls
- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
- Jingle Bells
- Joy To The World
- Hark, The Herald Angels Sing
- Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
- I’ll Be Home For Christmas
- It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
- Little Drummer Boy
- O Come All Ye Faithful
- O Holy Night
- O, Little Town of Bethlehem
- O Tannenbaum
- Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer
- Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
- Silent Night
- Silver Bells
- The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)
- The First Noel
- The Twelve Days of Christmas
- We Wish You A Merry Christmas
- What Child Is This?
- White Christmas
- Winter Wonderland

Since this list is so short, you tend to hear each song 700 times over the course of the few weeks leading up to Christmas.

And what about stockings? According to a very old tradition, the original Saint Nicholas left his very first gifts of gold coins in the stockings of three poor girls who needed the money for their wedding dowries. The girls had hung their stockings by the fire to dry. Up until lately, it was traditional to receive small items like fruit, nuts and candy in your stocking, but these have been replaced in the last half-century by gifts in many homes.

A couple of years ago, I teached drawing to kids at the local library in my hometown of Napierville, a small village near the USA/Canadian border.

With the library, I also organized some craft workshop. One of them included this Santa & Rudolf drawing that I made. They would color, cut and paste it on a paper gift bag. It made a nice personal Christmas bag to wrap a present in.

You could always do this craft, but I also made this drawing just as a regular coloring page.
And I added a speech bubble for the fun factor! ^-^

Do I need to mention you don’t need to be a kid to enjoy coloring this page?

That’s a line from an old kids radio show that Jesse and I used to listen to as kids, an episo

That’s a line from an old kids radio show that Jesse and I used to listen to as kids, an episode about a Thanksgiving gone horribly wrong. It was also said a lot this past week and a half, as Buckman and I went through a series of insanely awful events. As in, the hospitalization was not even the low point.

I’m not kidding.

(Quick background info. Buckman hasn’t been able to find work here, and my company is floundering. Between the long overdue paychecks and the expensive vet bills, my saving account won’t can’t cover me anymore, and so I gave notice to my apartment and told Jesse to clear the spare bedroom. Buckman arranged to go back to DC. Moving day was scheduled for last Sunday, and Buckman flies out tomorrow.)

I’ll start this tale of woe with the Weds before Thanksgiving. I popped into my gyno’s office for what was supposed to be a painless procedure. I left an hour later, in tears, minus a bit of my ladybits that I’d been rather attached to, which was taken from me without so much as a warning much less any sort of painkiller, by a device that resembled the lovechild of a fruit picker and a hole punch. As a parting gift, I was also given a piece of paper which warned me to treat my vagina like a gift, as in Do Not Open Until Christmas.

Lovely. Thanks. You’re not my gyno anymore.

The next day, Thanksgiving, dawned bright and clear and Buckman puking his guts out. By two in the afternoon he was delirious and the question was no longer “should I take him to the hospital?” it was, “how on earth am I going to carry him down three flights of stairs to the car?”

At one point the doctors where prepping him for surgery to remove his appendix, but eventually it was determined that he was suffering from gastroenteritis, which is essentially the experience of food poisoning, just with more pain.

I ate Thanksgiving dinner in the hospital cafeteria, and I’ll admit it. I felt sorry for myself. If only I’d known what I know now, I’d have been laughing like Buckman on painkillers.

After a failed attempt at Thanksgiving dinner for Buckman, in the form of cranberry juice from the nurses, I took him home. He’d lost eight pounds that day.

Friday was a lovely bright spot in that week. I left my dying cat and recovering Buckman to look after each other and watched my sweet Samantha marry Mickey, on a boat, in a full day extravaganza of food and dancing and food and did I mention food? And more dancing.

Sometime in the night that night, Dulce yakked all over the bathroom rug. Which was a delightful little surprise to find at three AM, when I joined her. All of Sam’s carefully prepared goodies were seeking escape from my body, through any route possible.

Yes, it turns out gastroenteritis is contagious.

I crawled back to bed, only to find that Dulce was not going to be outdone in the sick department, and had thrown up there to. I piled all the laundry by the door and slid in under another blanket.

I spent the next three days not packing and moving as planned, but meditating through the pain of stomach cramps, trying to hold down popsicles, and maintaining a quarantine of the apartment against wonderful helpful friends.

Come Monday, I could stand for short stretches of time, and I used this newfound power to drive Mau to the vet’s office to say goodbye. I was too weak to dig his grave. Buckman, Jesse and Bethany had to do it for me.

Did I mention my therapist just went on three weeks vacation?

Tuesday, now days past my moving date, I managed to box my things, and my wonderful friends all pitched in to help me pack. In the middle of carrying down boxes, the fella I’ve been seeing, well …. he gave me reason to decide not to see him anymore.

We loaded up the car, and Angelica’s SUV. And then her battery died.

I finally cracked. I sobbed until Triple A showed up. Somehow I managed to get through the rest of that night, get everything moved, and clean the apartment. In hindsight I’m not even sure how.

Fast forward to today. I’m alive. The past few days have been a lot better because, well, they’d pretty much have to be. Plus I can eat full meals now. And I’m unpacked. Rudolf enjoys playtime in the backyard, and Dulce’s starting to recover from the stress of the move.

InvisibleGaijin.com has learned the United States deployed a top secret weapons platform in Afghanistan, the long-rumored “SANTA” system.

Capable of omniscient surveillance, instantaneous global deployment, and unlimited payload capacity, SANTA is allegedly powered by a red-nosed reindeer code-named RUDOLF.

“SANTA is the holy grail of non-lethal anti-terror weapons,” explained self-proclaimed “pro surfer” and defense analyst, Zenbu Usoda, “once deployed, it causes insatiable demand for Zhu Zhu Pets, spreading panic and overwhelming the communications and distribution infrastructure of the enemy.”

“We can neither confirm nor deny the existence of the SANTA weapon,” stated Pentagon spokesperson, Colonel Blowin “Smoke” Outtamyass, “The question that America’s enemies must answer is ‘have you been bad or good?’”

Japanese Prime Minister Yukio “The Bird” Hatoyama denied rumors of secret agreements that allow US Forces to base the SANTA weapon at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa commenting, “I can’t even make up my mind about Futenma Air Station! Mommy!”

# # #

In other news, Japanese government survey shows that 63% of Japanese in their 20s believe “Children aren’t necessary.” 99.7% of their Parents: “We agree.”

Sports and Music. Both packed with vibe, aggression, anticipation, excitement, noise, energy, and soul. As an athlete, hearing a song that boils your blood and widens your eyes is just one small characteristic in which music can transcend physically into your own actions and thoughts. Eclectic restaurants and lounges are effective with paralleling their visual atmosphere to the aura it emits. Sport venues are no different. Rarely, unless you are at a cricket match, will the arena blair ‘Mozart’s 21st concerto in C major’ at the height of battle. 4th and 2 and one play to win or lose the game, here are the top 10 (due to change with time).

10. Eat the Rich – Aerosmith

9. Shoot to Thrill – AC/DC

8. Beautiful People – Marilyn Manson

7. Breakdown – Tantric

6. Desire – Ozzy Osbourne

5. Take the Power Back – Rage Against the Machine

4. Let it Rock – Kevin Rudolf feat. Lil’ Wayne

3. Man in the Box – Alice in Chains

A visszavágók sorát is súlyos vereséggel kezdte a Debrecen: 5–2-re verte agyba-főbe a Lokit a Fiorentina. A hazai 4–3-as meccs szépnek mondható teljesítményét képtelenek voltak megismételni Herczeg András tanítványai, és a második játékrészben „kínhalált haltak”.

A második játékrész kezdetét pocsék debreceni játék jellemezte.

Hol szerez pontot? Amit a Lokitól láthattunk, a részvételhez is kevés.

A Debreceni VSC TEVA 4–3-as vereséggel, kiegyensúlyozott mérkőzésen kényszerült térdre a Bajnokok Ligája csoportkörének 3. fordulójában. A Loki főleg védelmi gyengeségei és az ellenfél tapasztalati fölénye miatt hajtott fejet a Fiorentina előtt Budapesten.

A harmadik mérkőzésig kellett a Debrecennek várnia, míg beköszönt a kapuba a BL-ben. Aztán Coulibalynak sikerült egyenlítenie, a játékvezető azonban les miatt érvénytelenítette a gólt.

A csoport másik találkozóján kisebb bomba robbant Liverpoolban: a Debrecent legyőző Olimpique Lyon egygólos hátrányból fordítva, 2–1-re legyőzte Rafael Benitez bandáját.

A BL keddi játéknapjának nyolc találkozóján összesen 31 találat született. Íme a többi eredmények:
